Where to Eat and Drink in the Excelsior District

"Gentilly opened in 2019 as an ode to New Orleans, and it’s become one of the most popular restaurants in the neighborhood, thanks to Cajun flavors, vintage cocktails, a chill back patio, and the occasional live jazz. If the Crawfish Pot Pie or Maw Maw’s Gumbo don’t tempt you first, the Maple-Glazed Fried Chicken Special is a sweet deal, throwing in mac and cheese and green beans, and generously feeding two people for $28." - Becky Duffett

Gentilly offers a unique dining experience, with a vibrant bar area in the front and a more intimate dining room in the back. We dined at Gentilly during SF Restaurant Week. The blue crab and corn fritters were a delightful start to the meal. The crispy exterior gave way to a tender interior, and the paprika aioli added a tangy kick that complemented the seafood perfectly. The Cajun meatloaf was a hearty and satisfying dish. The meatloaf itself was juicy and flavorful, while the mashed potatoes were creamy and comforting. The green beans were well-seasoned, adding a touch of freshness to the plate. The chocolate pudding, however, was a bit of a letdown. While the pudding itself was rich and decadent, the Oreo crumbles were sparse, and the overall sweetness was overwhelming. The service was attentive and friendly, adding to the positive dining experience. Overall, Gentilly offers a solid dining experience with a focus on hearty, flavorful dishes.

Ambiance of the restaurant was great and the service was good. There are outdoor, indoor, and backyard dining options. Fish n chips portion size was great for the price. I thought the batter was a tad salty but others may enjoy it. The Cajun seasoning on the fries were great. The gumbo had great flavors. If there was only one item I could order, I’d probably go for the gumbo. The beignets weren’t anything revolutionary, but they were a good way to end the meal. Overall I had a good experience and I would definitely come back to try out their wings and other menu items.

Food: 3/5 Service: 3/5 Ambiance: 3/5 Overall: Food was standard fare. Would I come back: Probably not The extended review… Food: Beignets - 2/3 - These were a little bit flat and not quite as airy or puffy that I'm used to. Shrimp and Grits - 3/3 - Food was pretty standard fare. I could have ussed a few more shrimps to tie me over. Service: 3/5 - Staff was friendly but a tad slow. Ambiance: 3/5 - The main dining room is located in the backside of a bar.

We went here for my mom's bday and we loved our experience. For starters, we ordered the Bam Bam Shrimp and Blackberry BBQ chicken wings and both were so good. The shrimp was crispy and the spicy remoulade drizzled on top of it was just the right amount and wasn't too spicy. The Blackberry BBQ was moist and not too sweet. For my entree, I ordered the fried chicken with grilled mac and cheese. The chicken had a nice crisp and was also moist on the inside like the wings. I have never had grilled mac and cheese before and I liked the one that they had here. I was expecting it to be dry, but the inside was creamy while the crust had enough crisp that it was still not burnt. My sister ordered their gumbo and it was homey and had a lot of meats in it. The portion sizes were HUGE! The servers were all friendly and very accommodating. For dessert, we had their bread pudding that I wished was a tiny bit sweeter and had more sauce. We also tried their apple pie which was sooo yummy. Overall, loved our experience here. Will go back for some more grilled mac and cheese.

It was pretty loud and by the time we left on a Thursday evening they had a live band playing in the bar area. The food was ok. Nothing that I'm dying to go back for. Felt like some of the dishes were lacking a bit of something...

Sometimes you get invited to dinner and it turns out good. That's how I ended up at Gentilly tonight. The restaurant name sounded familiar because I used to drink at the Broken Record up on Geneva St. and the bartender highly recommended it. My friends who had cocktails said their drinks were good. We ordered the cajun wings $14 to start and all their entrees except for the beans and rice. Fish and chips $17, crawfish pot pie $20, cajun pasta $20, gumbo $22, bbq platter $24 and fried chicken $32. We all thought the food and service was excellent. Well done staff at Gentilly.

Google
Food is very good. I had the crayfish pot pie, very tasty, the spicy chicken sando was really good and the kids grilled cheese was good, it was big enough for an adult. Sorry food was so good that we snarfed everything down before we could take pics. Update to a recent visit. The bbq pork ribs were really good, fried chicken was okay and ordered the pot pie again.

Looking for a place to dine in the area and stumbled upon this highly rated place. It did not disappoint and service was extra friendly. We were the only customers dining in at 6pm on a weekday. Food was great and would come back to try other dishes next time.

Yelp
We decided to try Gentilly for some southern fried catfish and chicken! Another late dinner at around 9 pm. We were told the kitchen closes at 10, but the bar seems to remain open for a bit longer. We sat along side of lounge/bar up in front. There's also a dining area in back. But at that hour, it's a ghost town. The server was warm and welcoming as with the decor. Real southern hospitality! ***OUR PICKS*** SIDE CAESAR SALAD ~ I think they should have used a plate rather than giving me a paper food tray that's used mainly for fries. It became messy to eat with the parmesan cheese dropping off to the side. Pretty plain salad with lettuce, cheese and dressing. Croutons seemed to be missing. 3/5 FRIED CHICKEN PLATE & SIDE GUMBO AND JALAPEÑO MUFFINS ~ we asked for white and dark meat. Both were very juicy and not at all dry! Gumbo was flavorful with a hint of sweetness. The muffins were both sweet, savory and yummy! It was great with the butter spread. 5/5 FRIED CATFISH BASKET ~ we asked for one fried and one blackened. The server said since the kitchen isn't busy, we were able to try both. And they were done perfectly! Lightly battered on the fried and blacken was a little crispy and melt in your mouth good! 5/5 Besides the side Caesar salad everything was prepared well and tasted great! We know where to go when we're craving southern fare!

Yelp
Went for SF restaraunt week on 11/12. It took a little while to get our food, but I think because there was only 1 server and 1 bartender helping out that night. The Blue Crab and Corn Fritters were well fried and dressed with a nice, spicy aioli. The Cheesy Grits Cake was tasty, but came out lukewarm. The Blackened Shrimp Jambalaya was quite dry and was lacking a bit of substance. It was pretty much just tomato-ey rice, shrimp and green onion. The shrimp was well seasoned but the rice was a real let down. The Cajun Meatloaf saved the entree portion of the dinner. It was seared on both sides, giving it kind of a burger-esque vibe. The green beans and mashed potato were also well seasoned and delicious. If I were to compare with the only other place I've seen meatloaf (Blue Plate) the veggies at Gentilly are better and the meatloaf isn't too far off from Blue Plate's level. Beignets were a little too chewy, but the Chocolate Pudding was good. My experience was really let down by the jambalaya; it was just so dry that it felt like it was taking the moisture from my mouth.

Yelp
The food was great. The combo portion was a bit small. The service is good too. The restaurant atmosphere was alright, it's one of those dark restaurant inside.

Yelp
This restaurant has one of the best southern food that I've had in San Francisco. My husband and I each ordered a plate. The plate comes with two sides too! We ordered the fried chicken, ribs, mac & cheese, toast, gumbo, and green beans. Everything was cooked to perfection and had nice texture. If I had to pick a favorite item, it would be hard to choose because they were all so good. The bar area was very neat! The decorations reminded me of Halloween. It makes me wonder if it is Halloween themed year round.

Yelp
I came here with my friend for restaurant week. We ordered one of each choice which resulted in bam bam shrimp, ribs, gumbo, blackened catfish dinner, and beignets. My favorites were the bam bam shrimp and the blackened catfish; the catfish was very tender and had good flavor, and the shrimp was crispy and tasty. The ribs were not bad, although the flavor was overbearing. The gumbo, on the other hand, was kinda bland, although the shrimp in the gumbo was seasoned nicely. The restaurant was pretty cute on the inside, and service was friendly!

Yelp
Came with friends (group of 5) during SF Restaurant Week and ordered 2 sets of the dinner special. Altogether, we got to try the Bam Bam shrimp, Pork BBQ ribs, Southern Catfish dinner, Maw Maw's Gumbo, and classic beignets. This was all just enough to fill us + 2 extra orders of Cajun fries, so you might imagine that the portions are on a smaller size. However, I have to comment that the food was amazing, and I especially loved the Catfish (very tender), the BBQ ribs (which was actually very meaty), and the Cajun fries (the second batch did not come out as crispy as the first batch did). Service was great! Our server checked in often and was very receptive to our needs. I would recommend to come check out the restaurant if you're looking for a classy, high-end restaurant vibe while also being able to enjoy live music entertainment and the bar at the restaurant front!

Yelp
Had a great dinner with friends on a Friday night. Make that reservation. Really enjoyed the brussel sprouts, bam bam shrimp, and wings as starters. I had the fried catfish plate with gumbo and caesar salad. Wrapped up dinner and drinks with delicious dessert - the beignets and brownie with ice cream were so good! Ambiance was ok, small back room with some high and low tables. A bit cramped back there but still had a great time!

Yelp
I wanted to come back and update my second experience. My friends and I came for happy hour and appetizers for my birthday. They even allowed me to bring my own birthday cake in to celebrate with. My only gripe is that they don't keep accurate opening times. When I called to ask about the cake the day of, I found out they actually opened up an entire hour later than I thought. Their online times don't match their website and as I had just done a search in maps, I trusted what was listed. It was a bit stressful trying to replan part of my evening, especially because I my plan was for an early outing - to accommodate my friends as well. Having less time also meant we found ourselves making sure to order drinks before we finished our last to make the most of the only happy hour. I will say though that both times, the service was excellent. The bartenders and servers were on top of it and friendly. Overall I prefer the front room rather than the back room. The front has a much more eclectic and cozy vibe and while the back room is about the same size, maybe a smidge smaller, the brighter lighting and setup doesn't have the same feel or sound absorption. My first time in the back room I found myself whispering at dinner because I felt others could hear us.

Yelp
Meh The crab cakes were good hence 2 stars. But the jambalaya was like fried rice with 8 pieces of shrimp. Asked for gluten free but they put a cookie non gf in the dessert. And the cocktail was well I could only drink half before I get sick. I'm sure others had a lovely dinner but me... I go out for hopefully good food, this place nah

Yelp
Great ambience. Food is pretty good. Doesn't necessarily live up to NOLA standards but we're not in NOLA. Pretty pricey, too.

Yelp
Have been wanting to try this place for a while now and I can say that I'm a little disappointed in the food. Ordered the fried chicken and it comes with 2 sides. We opted for the gumbo and cajun fries. Sad to say that the Cajun fries were the only thing that felt seasoned enough for us and they also had a nice fry to them. The gumbo tasted like it came from a can and the sausage in the gumbo was meh. The fried chicken was fried nicely but the flavor and seasoning were seriously lacking. We had to add salt to both the gumbo and fried chicken. Even went the extra mile putting syrup on the chicken because it was that bland. Fries: 3.5/5 Gumbo: 1/5 Fried chicken: 2.5/5 The ambiance inside is nice and would be great for a date but I would just have some drinks and skip the food. They have an outdoor patio in the back but I didn't really get to check it out since I took my order to-go. Parking is pretty hard depending on the time of day. Oh and they also changed their menu recently(August) so the pictures of the menu on here are not up to date. Overall, I wouldn't come here again. At least not for the food. 2.5/5

Yelp
I was craving some creole style food and fell upon this place. All the pictures looked so good on Yelp so I decided to give it a try. The customer service was excellent. However, I did ask for rice as my side instead of French fries with my Catfish dinner. So I was pretty upset when I saw fries in my bag. I also thought this was a restaurant but it is NOT! So please do not be alarmed when u walk into a hole-in-the-wall bar. The aesthetic of this place does scream bourbon street New Orleans which I appreciate, but the food screams Blue Eyed Blues flavorless (if you know, you know). My partner ordered the gumbo and said it wasn't giving what it was supposed to give. YIKES! Already disappointed, I decided to try his gumbo (even though I gave up eating sausage a long time ago). He was right! It tasted more like consommé for Birria tacos than gumbo. All in all, my catfish was actually pretty solid and so were the green beans but no for the price. It's a little expensive for my liking. Between receiving the wrong side and not so gumbo, GUMBO, I have to give this place a 2/5.

Doug B.

Yelp
Here I am, an actual Cajun who grew up on the west edge of the Atchafalaya, with my authoritative review. Now, my opinion is that New Orleans food isn't by definition "Cajun". It's creole with some Cajun influence. And Gentilly hits the mark so hard I had flashbacks to Maw Maw's kitchen, helping to make roux by hand. I've enjoyed many dishes there, but have to recommend Maw Maw's gumbo, and the Red Beans and Rice. For two folks, it's a perfect deeply satisfying nosh. I'm no longer an alcohol drinker, but when I came to the bar and asked for "something a sober person might drink at the Rosevelt's Sazerac bar" I got a concoction that tickled me from my toes on up. It was a great companion to the slightly spicy gumbo. Also: green onions in grits: very demure way to pop a simple dish into palette happiness. Go. Go now. Spend money there or get some sent to you at home. Put on some nice Dewey Balfa or the Meters. And welcome to best place to eat New Orleans west of the Mississippi.

Yelp
Sarah and company made our 10th anniversary dinner wonderful. Everyone raved about the pulled pork sliders and all the sides. Definitely recommend them for any occasion! Their restaurant is amazing also, great food, service and drinks!

Yelp
Had a "guys night out" with my best friend and my son. Street parking on Mission Street can be difficult. The front of house is a great looking bar with couches and tables. The main dining area is in the back. Our server (sorry I forgot her name) was very friendly. The Crispy Brussel Sprouts were beautifully charred with bacon, cheese. The Pork BBQ Platter had pulled pork (tender, smoky and lean), ribs with a sweet and tangy sauce (a bit on the smaller size but yummy), Mac and cheese, and green beans. It was a yummy plate. The Maw Maw's Gumbo had chicken, andouille sausage, shrimp and rice. It was fine. I wish it had more spicy or flavor. The flavors felt a little muted. The Brisket Cheeseburger was richly delicious. To finish, we had the beignets. Oh wow! So good! They were covered in a thick caking of powdered sugar. We also opted for the chocolate, caramel and raspberry sauces. So amazing! Can you tell I have a sweet tooth? Gentilly is a wonderful restaurant in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Walking in, you feel like you've entered your NOLA grandmothers living room. It's an inviting space that feels more bar than restaurant. Honestly, I'm okay with that! There are tables to grub at and seats to lounge. Perfect for San Francisco honestly because everyone loves a hybrid third space to kill time at. Drinks are solid, food was on point. I have to come back for the full menu since it was Sunday streets but I appreciate anywhere with a $10 limited menu to compliment drinks. Will be back for sure!

Yelp
We decided last minute on this spot. Def a great place to be with friends. Went there on a Saturday night, and we got pretty loud. Their hibiscus margaritas are something you should have with your meal. I think my favorite dish was the pasta and gumbo. We order wings and all items from the entree except beans and rice. This was for 5 people... it was more than enough for us. Service was A+, very nice and attentive. Will definitely want to come back again.

Yelp
This is a fun spot to grab a drink or enjoy a meal! A little on the pricey side, but everything tasted great. This is truly a HIDDEN gem. We walked past it twice and kept missing it! I recommend trying the Crawfish Pot Pie! Crispy and buttery pie crust and the filling is delicious. They don't skimp on the crawfish. I just wish the pie was bigger. It definitely came out smaller than expected. The Crawfish Hush Puppies were just okay. I feel like the oil they used was old, or maybe they were overfried? I did try some of Maw Maw's Gumbo! The shrimp in there is SCRUMPTIOUS. The gumbo itself was a little bland, but overall pretty good!
google avatar

Regi K.

Yelp
We ordered the pork ribs Cajun fries basket, crispy brussel sprouts, blackened shrimp Caesar salad, shrimp and grits, fried chicken for two, blackened catfish dinner, crawfish pot pie, and the beignets with dipping sauce. Had a lot of hopes for the chicken as I was curious about the bacon maple glaze. In fact that was what brought us there. Didn't see much of the glaze was it really was bland, not much flavor or seasoning. Had to drown it in their house made hot sauce. We liked the pork ribs a lot. Very tender and fall off the bone. Pot pie was okay and the catfish dinner was meh. Beignets were ok though drenched in powdered sugar.

Yelp
Great hidden gem in Excelsior. Cool vibe, good food, reasonably priced and generous cocktails

Yelp
We ordered the red beans and rice with sausage, truly disappointing. Popeyes makes better. The 4 ribs over cajun fries is certainly overpriced at $23.00, Cajun pasta was ok Maw maw gumbo was tasteless. Will not buy here again, way overpriced for unseasoned food.

Miguel V.

Yelp
Go check em out NOW! Best cajun food i've ever had . Service is usually quick. So happy they are in the neighborhood. My go Tos Blackberry or Cajun Wings extra crispy Side mac n cheese Ribs Cesar salad Brussels sprout and bacon The Beignets The menu itself should catch your eye! Go give them a try!

Yelp
Not enough great things can be said about Gentilly. This is my go to spot for some southern comfort food and great drinks. I have taken several friends here to try out. They have a nice little bar area with piano and lounge seating up front which seems like a casual place to have some drinks with friends. The back area is seated dining. As shown by my pictures, I have sampled many dishes and drinks here. I loved every single item that I have ever ordered. One thing that is not pictured here, but I would highly recommend trying, is the green gumbo. It had a delicious taste and some crispy pork in it I believe. My mouth is salivating just thinking about that dish.

Yelp
We came by as a group of 9 without rezzie but were given a long table in the dining area after a few mins gg. Very limited seating of 3 large tables inside but has outdoor seating. Ambiance: 10/10. Absolutely love the vibe and ambiance here. Dark lighting, slightly loud but very mindful diners, the decor... the restaurant just gives off a very chill vibe. Service: 10/10. Our waitress was friendly, quick, and attentive despite our large group. Food: 9/10. Most of the items here are kind of spicy! (Cajun based) Cajun fries - Crispy, spicy, and tasty. Crawfish hush puppies - Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Generous serving for crawfish inside-- kind of like a medium sized meatball. Creamy cajun pasta - We all loved this one. Super creamy, delicious, and spicy! Pasta was good perfectly as well. Crawfish pot pie - A bit bland but still baked to perfection with a crispy layer on top. Maw maw's gumbo - Only 6 pieces of shrimps :( although they were grilled to perfection, they were way too salty. Rice was cooked very well as well and the sauce was really delicious and spicy. Drinks - 10/10. We tried a variety from beer to cocktails and no one had any complaints. I had Marie Laveau, which had a slightly strong taste of gin (which I liked) + fruity + tart that eventually became much lighter after the ice melted. Overall, we all enjoyed this place and would highly recommend!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I chose this restaurant to celebrate our 3rd Valentine's Date. I must say, this hole-in-the-wall bar and restaurant is lit! And I love how surprising and interesting this place is! Food was great! Staff were hospitable and service was fast. A must try!

Yelp
I love the vibe here. Third time trying this place and really amazed with some of the food. Service is really good. Fried Southern Catfish was really good large portion. Gumbo was also good just needed a little salt and pepper. Bam Bam shrimp was okay and burnt my brussels sprouts kind of sad. lol

Yelp
This place is great! My go to anytime I'm craving southern food. Lots of strong flavor and spice in all the dishes. Brings memories back for me of New Orleans and Mardi Gras. My favorites are the gumbo dishes - both mama's and green gumbo. Both are a bit spicy but packed with so much flavor and goodness.Entrees are large and enough to be shared family style or for leftovers. I always leave feeling satisfied. On weekends there's usually live music in the front bar area too. Highly recommend this spot!
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
More like a 3.5 but I'll round up to 4 because the fried chicken was so good! I'm not going to lie I was a little disappointed with the Mac & cheese because it came out in a square shape, and it was kinda bland tasting. Also the gumbo threw me off too. I'm not sure if it was just because of the chef that night, but the pictures I saw made the gumbo look more thick and rich. However, the gumbo we got was dark brown and more on the watery side. I will say though, that the fries chicken really did it for me! It was perfectly crusted and came with a maple bacon spread on top that complemented the fried chicken really well. The actual meat inside was also juicy and not dry at all. Also, the crawfish pot pie was really good. The crawfish was juicy and not rubbery at all, and there was a nice flaky crisp to it even though it was also saucy. I definitely would come back for the pot pie and the fried chicken alone.
google avatar

Shauna R.

Yelp
I had got food to go, but please go to this place. Omg the gumbo was popping and the red beans and rice were on point. The cornbread muffins are a hit! I will definitely chill in person next time. Bring my mom she loves southern food!

Yelp
Why do I find myself singing the chorus to "Chantilly Lace" as sung by The Big Bopper whenever I think of the name Gentilly? Named after a popular neighborhood in the city of New Orleans, Gentilly represents Cajun and Creole cuisine at its finest. Opened in the fall of 2019, Gentilly replaced the longstanding Doctor's Lounge with their stylish glass encased front door, one aspect that remains from their previous tenant. What brought a friend to the outer recesses of San Francisco in the Excelsior neighborhood was the fact that Gentilly was participating in San Francisco Restaurant for the Spring of 2023, in which participating restaurants offered a prefix three-course meal offered at a set price. And with Gentilly offering six menu options at a price of 45 dollars, then how can we resist? The drive out to Gentilly can be a bit far, even for those living in San Francisco, as Excelsior represents a neighborhood that is filled with a number of small independently owned restaurants and shops that cater the locals, and not necessarily considered a foodie destination to most. Thankfully Gentilly is here to change that, and with the specialty New Orleans French-inspired cuisine they serve here, they represent a destination worth trying out. Reservations for two were super easy to make via the Yelp website, despite only deciding to dine here a mere three days in advance. Since we came on a Sunday evening, parking along Mission Street was available a block away. Upon entry through the glass door to Gentilly one will immediately think of this being a speakeasy as there was a long huge bar, long tables and multiple sofas and chairs to sit in their front room which served as their bar area. From there, the host took us beyond the kitchen and into a small room that served as their main dining room. We sat at an intimate table for two in which half of the seats are along a banquet against the wall, and the other half of your table gets to sit in chairs. The dinner menu at Gentilly is broken up into categories including Appetizers, Soup and Salads, Sandwiches and Po' Boys, Entrées, Sides, Desserts and their Kids' Menu. But we came for their three-course pre fixe meal that they were offering for San Francisco Restaurant Week. For our first course, I ordered their Pork Sausage Stuffed Mushrooms which were served in a herbed butter sauce, while my friend ordered their other offering in their Mini Crab Cakes, which were topped with a citrus aioli and served on a bed of an arugula salad. For my entrée, I opted to order their Beef Bourguignon, which was served on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes and served with Brussel sprouts. My friend ordered their Stuffed Catfish which was topped with a dill white sauce and a side of both crawfish dirty rice and green beans. For our dessert course, I ordered their Spiced Apple Galette, which was topped with a scoop of brown butter sage ice cream, caramel and lavender salt. My friend ordered their Classic Beignets which were three deep fried square shaped dough topped with confectioners sugar and served with three of their dipping sauces, which were berry, chocolate and caramel flavored. To start our meal off right, Gentilly had a wonderful beverage menu filled with handcrafted cocktails, and I ordered their Marie Laveau, which had had earl-gray infused gin, apricot, peach, lemon and a pinch of salt, and my friend ordered their Parasol, which had mezcal, cucumber, fennel, ginger line and jalapeño garnish. As we sipped on our delightful cocktails, our appetizers were brought out and we scarfed them both down as they were some of the most tasty small bites that we have had in quite some time. Then our entrées were presented, and although they were lovingly plated, I felt that my beef was over-seasoned as it came across as a wee bit too salty on the pallet, while my friend's catfish was wonderfully seasoned with a hearty portion to boot. Finally our desserts were presented and although my galette was a wee bit undercooked, as it was hard to even put my fork through the entire crust, when combined with the ice cream and caramel topping, it was simply a decadent delight. My friend's beignets were a highlight as they were cooked to perfection as they were pillowy soft and when topped with sauces, they just added the perfect amount of sweetness. We had a wonderful time at Gentilly, as we never felt rushed and every aspect of our meal was delivered in due time. When adding in my friend's glass of red wine that they enjoyed with our entrees, our total bill came to be a little under 136 dollars, and they uniquely email you a receipt after you add in your gratuity instead of giving you a copy after your meal. Gentilly is a perfect example of a hidden gem as how often does one get to visit the Excelsior district, especially when dining on Creole cuisine? Not many in my own personal experiences, and I for one am so glad that I got to try this unique cuisine that isn't very prevalent in the city.

Yelp
This is the hidden gem of the Excelsior. It is a New Orleans, Cajun Louisiana jazz fused bar restaurant. It is fabulous and the food is delicious. You must try their beignets. Highly recommend stepping out of your neighborhood to venture to the Excelsior for this unique place.

Yelp
Lovely place! They're owned by bomb female chefs. Big fan of the ambiance. The bar has wonderful cocktails.

Yelp

Yelp
Hole in the wall type of place. - Crawfish hush puppies: 5/5 - cornbread: very good - Veggie crostata: 5/5 I didn't expect much, tbh the presentation can be better but it was very delicious - Blackened fish po boy: crispy edge, soft bread. I love it. Huge portion. We swapped the fries with salad. - Gumbo: it was very flavorful but needed a tiny bit more salt. My bf kept raving about the prawn in that dish We were so full and couldn't get the cobbler. Will definitely comeback for brunch - shrimp and grit. The interior has a unique, charming look. I love it. The service was friendly and attentive.

Yelp
Just before Christmas I was looking for a place to meet my cousins for cocktails that was (1) open Mondays, (2) not a sports bar, and (3) as close as possible to West Portal. This was shockingly hard to find. Gentilly was where we ended up going and it was AMAZING! Absolutely loved the very spacious yet cozy and comfy front bar area. Cocktails were A+. Appetizers were A+. Service was A+! Will return for sure.

Yelp
food: got ribs appetizer they started off okay smokey soft, not like parboiled first, so i thought hmm. they smoked them long and slow.. but then as i ate another and another, they were dry with no moisture to them so yeah i think they smoked them too long. maybe that's why all the sauce. fried catfish i think it was cornmeal breading but couldnt tell the filets were too thick and wet, making the flesh soft not firm and really loose so when i picked them up they broke and went everywhich way. this wet the breading so i didnt get any crispness . additionally if this is a cajun restaurant it wasn't apparent with the seasoning of the ribs or catfish. there essentially was no seasoning beyond salt/pepper. beignets they came and looked fluffy enuff they were puffed up but when i bit into them they werent light and crispy on the outside and airy in the inside (as I found them to be in New Orleans) these were really doughy. the insides were almost solid with a wet dough that hadn't cooked through fully. so you had to chew them a bit....more than if they weren't doughy. the staff was great, polite and attentive (cept there was a long wait between the entree and dessert) but where is the cajun essence? I've had better ribs and catfish at "regular" restaurants at a far more affordable price point. sorry

Yelp
Really excellent spot in the south mission with authentic and delicious Cajun and comfort food. Had the blackberry wings... should have expected super sweet but ultimately were a bit much. Brussels sprouts were great as was the bbq platter. Delicious ribs and awesome pulled pork. Fried Mac and cheese was also a hit. Fish and chips were super flaky and delicious. Overall great spot, super vibe and reasonably priced excellent food.

Yelp
Wow! Gentilly is the best kept secret of the Excelsior neighborhood. We had an incredible dinner here and my only disappointment is that I didn't know about this place sooner. I can't wait to bring my friends who live in New Orleans here when the visit. They will love it! The festive and casual atomosphere is inviting and the food was well executed. Our server was great too. Next time, we will try the mixed drinks (killer cocktail menu). Be sure to save room for beignets for dessert. They were excellent. We will definately be back!

Yelp
Great spot for brunch or lunch. We had the beignets and the crawfish pot pie. Both were very good! The service was friendly and attentive. If you're in this area and looking for a great meal, or if you're craving some cajun cuisine, then give this place a try. Also had the Bloody Mary which was good (although I was slightly disappointed that it wasn't served with celery and/or anything pickled).

Yelp
Got takeout with friends on a Wednesday night. Gumbo, crawfish pie, and pasta were all really delicious. Went back the same week but on a Friday with another friend. The atmosphere with live music was amazing and the staff were all super friendly, constantly checking in with us and having great conversations with everyone. Loved the hibiscus margarita. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
I have mixed feeling about Gentilly. When you first enter its a small bar area. And the have dinning out doors and a small little room in the back. When we entered on a Sunday night around 5 pm it was dead. There were two people at the bar. We were greeted and asked if we would like to sit in the back or out doors. We decided to sit in the back away from everyone.. We were given the menu and drink menu. I knew I wanted to try the mau mau gumbo and possibly the cajun pasta. We were informed that they have specials which was a crawfish soup or a rib and sausage platter. We choose the crawfish soup. It comes in a small bowl with 2 slices of toast cut into halves. The soup was nice and creamy it had corn, potsteo, bacon, peas bit I didn't taste any crawfish. We choose the huspuppies which was nicely fried but so bland. We used the lemon, salt and peper and dipping sauce just to give it flavor. For the appetizer you get 5 puppies. I will honestly say do not get it. The two dishes that had flavor were the mau mau gumbo and the creamy pasta. Both dishes had alot of sauce, chicken and sausage. The only different was the gumbo has shrimp. To me I get list the gumbo was bland. But the creamy cajun pasta had the most flavor. It was rich but not to heavy. If I was to recommend a dish I would say get the crawfish Soup and the creamy cajun pasta.

Yelp
Great location with delicious food. I enjoyed every second of my meal and will definitely return when I am back in the SF area. Highly recommend for people looking for a taste of New Orleans. Bam bam shrimp, crawfish pot pie, Maw maw's gumbo, red beans and rice, and beignets ... ARE ALL A MUST TRY. Do yourself a favor and come here on an empty stomach so that you can leave full and happy! Thanks for a great meal!

Yelp
Service was excellent! Super attentive. Their back patio is only open for private events, which is a bit of a bummer. Would have preferred to sit there vs. a parklet on the street. Food was tasty but didn't blow me away. Pork platter was a very large volume. The cobbler that we got was excellent. Definitely the best thing we got.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place so much! The pictures were soooo appealing and I love dishes like "pan roast" as influenced by Oyster Station from Las Vegas.... but I left feeling like something was missing. The vibes here are enjoyable. There's outdoor seating for 3 small groups, then there are couches with coffee tables for people to lounge and socialize and a pretty large area for bar seating to sip on a nice drink. Its got that vibe where you come to socialize and enjoy the company around. You see folks talking to others , starting up conversations with random folks also sitting around. It's 'that' place in these people's eyes, you know? Sat at the bar, nice guy up front. Saw him take a shot with one of the customers. She was by herself, and started talking to other guests at the restaurant. She seemed like a regular. I think I'm trying to give you the vibe of a 1980s book I read in English class, like that one called The Catcher in the Rye. The food was just average in my opinion. Take it with a grain of salt please. don't know if it was the gumbo that just didn't have the richness that I wanted or if it was the small jalapeño cornbread bites that tasted good, but not great, or the Crispy Brussel Sprouts that had a little too much vinegar and didn't have the crunch that was advertised. Overall, good vibes, but food-wise, I'm just okay!
