We stopped in for a drink on Friday night. The kitchen staff recommended the daily special: Ox tail grilled cheese sandwich and corn beef egg rolls. The food was fantastic and the staff was very friendly. I knocked off one star since it took a while to get our beer, but the bartender made up for the wait with a lot of enthusiasm. There was only one bartender at the time, and she really did do a great job.

Only bar I frequent now. Food smacks, drinks are made right, service is great and there is always a good mix of regulars and people just looking for a drink. Johnny, Fred, HB, Katy and the rest of staff deserve all the love.

The best bar in Oakland if you wnat a taste of the genuine masshup culture. Everyone is welcome here. Put your name up for pool early, and enjoy some pickup dinner from the kitchen window - anything from chicken tenders to oxtail stew. And don't forget to add your best toe-tapping tunes to the always-jumping jukebox. I love this place.

UPDATE: it's probably my fault, because I'm just slow to grasp things that sometimes, but The kitchen and menu in this place are the sleeper hit of the century. Had one of the best chicken sandwiches I ever ate, and discovered that the locals have been keeping this place a secret ( I understand fully), The recommend that if you go here, try anything coming out of their kitchen. It is real Americana bar food, but high end. Now, onto my regular review...... Working class Watering Hole owned and operated by local people who like local people who appreciate local people that I mention local people? Cheap drinks, good company, pool tables, a jukebox and people who won't call the cops if you have an occasional smoke outside. What more could you ask for? Don't Front, you know you need a place like this. When it's time to get down and dirty and have some hard drinking fun, or sit down next to some true Burly men and women and learn what the working-class Oakland experience is all about, stop by. You won't be disappointed

Do yourself a favor. Give up your FOMO and get LOCA(l). This bar is a reliable solution for a weekend you are playing by ear, or an after-work hangout. Cool lounge area, great bar, and pool tables. Neighborhood bars are as good as the people and the people here are legit: friendly and genuine. You can actually mix and mingle at this bar, unlike trendy destination bars where people talk to their clique. Service is friendly and on-point - a rarity these days. It’s hard enough to find a bar with food at all. The bar food - hand food (burgers, chicken sandwiches, fries) - are restaurant quality. Thanks HP and BO for your kitchen artistry. A cool little smokey dive off College Ave. Pool tables. Cash only? Some snacks. Older vibe was nice. No young loud kids. Sports on the TV’s. Good place for a drink at the end of the day or a stop in on your food walk down College Ave.

I am an out of towner and was looking for a place to catch the Eagles game. Some friends told me about this bar so I gave it a shot. George & Walt's is in a great are and the place was very diverse. There were plenty of TVs airing all sorts of games and pool tables. The bar is cash only (set to change soon) with tons of drinks specials. The bartenders were friendly and quick to check in. I was happy to have so many food options at this dive like bar. Everything came out delicious and the service was incredible!

Love this place, two pool tables, good crowd, great food and good jukebox selection although some bartenders have the music way too low.

Dive bar at its finest. Cash only. They sell smokes at the bar. Tvs. Plenty of seating with 3 pool tables. Everyone seemed to be a local and not in the rich, tech-bro kind of way. The fries and chicken wings were delicious. Everything's a little sticky, but would a dive bar be any other way? Beer with the sidecar special was a hit with my husband. I stuck with a few beers. A great place to end the night!

Basic dive sports bar with a decent grill, pool tables and loud sports on TVs. My corned beef meal wasn't the greatest, but I hear there are better options.

Street parking Cash Only ATM inside AMI digital juke Pool tables They have Direct TV packages for different sports so if you're looking for a certain game-- you would likely find it here. I was told they had vegan food but I didn't think I would want bar food so I ate beforehand. We went for College Basketball and the bartender was accommodating when we were figuring out where to sit to watch the game and when asked to turn up some volume.. They've got several TVs so different games can be watched.. The place has a divey vibe with regular bar prices.. I overheard someone tell another they had good food. There were restrooms in the back-- one for men and one for women. I'd come back and catch more games there.. drinks were good and maybe next time I'll look into food options..

Love a local sports bar - one of the few kitchens in the area that is open past 10PM. The chicken strips were HUGE, juicy and tasty - recommend!!

Service is great and the ambience is a bar, which is probably why you're there! The food was not great, however. Since I like to play pool, I'll probably be there and try something else from the menu - and update the review if needed.

I've been going here since college, a staple for UC Berkeley students. Cash only bar but you can shoot pool, enjoy drink specials, and playing good music on the jukebox.

Adorable local bar and grill. Stumbled upon this nugget while driving home, and was craving American burgers and some beers. People here felt very connected and friendly, service was good. Ordered their special burger and drinks. Burgers was huge and juicy; one of the better cheeseburgers I've tasted in a while. Fries are amazing, and what can I say? Good vibes all around!

Cool local sports bar in Rockridge. Older crowd and seems to be regulars. Lots of TVs, pool tables, darts, and seating. Has a full menu and lots of specials. Staff is nice, definitely a gem for the area.

It bugs when people call bars like this a "dive bar." It's not a dive bar. It's a neighborhood bar. It's clean, people are friendly and there are regulars a-plenty. There's a pool table, a great AMI juke box and drink prices are fair. Now, when I say "neighborhood bar," that's not always a great thing. I've been in some where the regulars are so possessive of their place that everyone else is driven out. George and Walt's isn't like that. It's the best kind of neighborhood bar. The bartender was awesome in suggesting drinks. I LOVE the fact that my Maker's Manhattan came in a nice martini glass rather than a damn Bell jar or rocks glass. There were younger people, older people and all shapes, sizes and colors. If you're looking for a chill place to have a drink or a beer and watch a game or hang out, George and Walt's has you covered.

Great bar if you're from the neighborhood. Stopped in for drinks and tater tots. Decent selection and good specials every night. Had a few pints. Was told to order food at a separate window. The bar doesn't take credit card but the food corner does. However ordered food and was told that I could sub tots for my fried on a sandwich. They upcharged me without telling me then came by and said they 86'd the tots earlier so offered me the original fries. Fries were real good but check afterwards still showed the upcharge for tots. Sandwich was meh, mostly lettuce. Service at the car was great though. Would definitely try

I have been a fan of this bar for years. Tonight I fall in after having a rough evening and this guy ignores me as I stand there listening to him talk to another customer for hellaaaaa long! I understand having a conversation-but not even so much as eye contact for minutes and I'm standing this close? Sheesh! It was to the point that I walked out and went to buy a bottle! I just wanted to drink and shoot pool. SMH Oh well...... Again, I normally like the place. There's simply no justification for what just happened. I heard the convo. Won't say it was unimportant, but dude-you could have acknowledged me at the very least!

Went into George and Walt's tonight because last night my husband was in and had a fantastic pizza. I was skeptical, but I thought I'd give it a try. What a fantastic pizza! And a great salad with ranch dressing ! I ran into a friend who said their fried chicken sandwiches over the moon good! Super fun crowd, great energy. I don't drink, so don't know about the drinks but come for the food and the fun vibe.

Great work that Barb has done with the kitchen and new wine list for any day of the week. And a great place for Twin Brothers to have reunions.

The drinks were adequate. The grill was exceptional. No bar food there. Made from scratch chicken and burgers. Can't ask for more. Will definitely be back.

Best sports bar in Oakland/Rockridge area. TV for any game you want and drink specials every day. The servers are some of the best with a "customer is always right" kinda attitude. And the food is off the hook!

My partner and I like to go here to play pool and get a few drinks. The place looks like a basic pool bar, there are two tables and you must put your name on both or either chalk boards to get to play on one or both tables ( all depends on which chalk boards you put your name). The pool table closest to the entry gets a very long list on the chalk board and alot of the players are good and take the game seriously. The second table alot of gets doubles, people just playing a game to pass time etc, on Thursdays league pool play on the second table from like 6 to 10pm. The service at this bar is great, friendly staff; it seems like a neighborhood bar where people get to know each other ( very cheers like lol). The drinks I order are always good, a little pricey ( everything is now a days) and strong, which I like ofcourse. Lastly, the food, one day we got hungry and order a burger with onion rings and a chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. The burger my partner got was grilled to perfection, not at all greasy like some other burger joints. It was crispy, spiced well and had everything you would want on your burger ( had tomatoes, at no extra cost). The onion rings were crispy and delicious. The chicken sandwich was so moist, had a great array of spices, was juicy, not at all soggy or have a dry top layer, it was through and through moist and absolutely delectable. The sweet potatoes were crunchy, great. All in all I think I found my new hangout spot.

This is the joint. We love this place for football, sports in general or even just to chill for an afternoon. Super friendly crowd that will rope you in to a conversation or round of shots if you're up for that, but also will leave you be if you're not up for talking. Also IMO they have the best burger in Oakland right now -- go check it out!

My go to "under dive bar" the drinks are consistently perfect, ask for Frank, Dan or Matty for a stiff one. The food is on point and always fresh. I practice my dart skills and sometimes pool. The pool players are so friendly and always ready to teach a newbie. Just put your name on the board! The jukebox has all the new hits including the oldies. Download the app for easy access.

My wife and I have been here a few times. We decided to go there today because our power has been off for two days due to a large storm here in Oakland California. The service was amazing, our bartender Madison and Norma were exceptional. The food was amazing. Only way this could've been better would've been if our great friend Kay would've also been there. We will definitely be going back.

Took a chance on a bar my friends and I had never been to before, only to find out that they are cash only. Poop. BUT! They have an ATM at the bar, tons of TVs, and drinks and drink specials that are more than fair. Including pint-sized cocktails at $10! They also have a grill that serves up different bar food and burgers/salads/sandwiches, and they take card there. There are two pool tables and an area near the back and bathrooms that is sort of a tv lounge area. Vibes are laid-back and you get a hometown kind of vibe in the bar. There was an artist there who came up to my friends and I and he drew one of my friends- so talented! I could see myself coming back here to watch more games.

This is a really good neighborhood bar that has cheap drinks and amazing food. They have a daily drink and food specials in this bar and its best to come Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays , when theres crowd of people and the atmosphere is happening. The staff is amazing and friendly.

As I sit here in George and Walts after a year living in quarantine. I am absolutely amused and impressed by the welcoming regulars and bartender who checked on me regularly, even though my social skills have totally gone to shit. I really like George and Walts, and every time I visit from out of town it I unassuming and friendly. A great neighborhood bar to visit. If your in town come check it out.

Cool dive bar with pretty good drink prices. I've been here a few times and there is a pool table, lots of TVs and it is usually not crowded and just a casual place to grab a drink. There are different drink specials daily. I don't remember any of the deals or prices off hand. I remember that a Jameson on the rocks came with a free beer back and was definitely under $10 and probably more like $7. Sorry for not knowing the prices, but you can be confident in coming here and not breaking the bank on a few drinks.

I hate that employees are some of the reasons why businesses get bad reviews. We walked into George & Walts for a couple drinks to kill time while we wait for our reservation at Belotti down the street. We were having a good time, enjoying our Manhattans made by the only bartender on shift, who happens to be from Manhattan (she claimed). We were enjoying our drinks, watching sports games; she was serving specials and chit-chatting with regulars. Not a busy evening where one bartender can't hold it down on her own. And it all went south after my husband ordered a second round. My husband put a $20 on the counter, she took it, and minutes later asked us if we paid for the 2nd drink yet. My husband said, "Yes, I put a 20 down and you took it." Even the customer next to us said, "I saw him put a 20 down." She seemed confused and couldn't remember what she did with it. She took awhile to retrace her steps but still wasn't able to remember whether she took the cash or not because she couldn't remember what she did with it. She returned to us with the change and I thanked her. She replied, "I guess" with a shoulder shrug. I looked at my husband with a "WTF was that" look. We let it go. As we were getting ready to leave, we both thanked her and wished her a good night and she just gave us a smirk. Really? Up yours lady. Sorry you can't multitask. Also, why don't you finish one transaction before starting another if you can't keep your shit together.

I stumbled upon George & Walt's when I was out on College Avenue and looking to check out another bar in the area. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this place was a cozy sports bar that had a friendly, neighborhood vibe. My friend and I decided to stay for a bit to finish watching the Warriors game, and there were comfy seats right by the table. The drinks were affordable, and they have also have daily pricing specials. The bartenders were friendly, and George & Walt's looks like a great, casual place to get a drink. I would definitely go back if I'm looking to throw back some brews in a low-key environment!

This place was exactly as described. It's a dive bar with excellent food. I particularly like the "theater-style" TV watching area. The comfy, but beat-up lounge chairs are fantastic. The bartenders were friendly and the cook was awesome! I highly recommend the veggie burger.

Norma is the best bartender!! My margarita was exactly the way I wanted, I told her I don't like it too sweet. The food is awesome also. This is my third time here and I will definitely be back.

I was really looking forward to trying out this place. I called prior to confirm that they would be playing my game, which were more than accommodating, I specifically asked if the venue was animal friendly. The gentleman on the phone said no except for service animals. I have had my service animal for more than 5 years ADA federally protected/covered as well as a physician and a psychiatrist note from Kaiser. I bring my animal to weekly doctor appointments for my disability. He started the conversation innocently, however he then became more irate when he tried to debate my disability to him. He defined the only disability this enterprise accepts as physical. That is illegal and untrue. I will define what disability means as well as what the ADA covers. A disability is physical or mental condition that limits a person's movements, senses, or activities. A service animal means any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability. The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. I am not one of those haters that even has to write this kind of thing on Yelp. This place made me feel uncomfortable and discriminated, despite my question to speak with the boss. Very disappointing.

Great food! It's bar fare with a Rockridge twist. The menu is small but covers a plethora of tastes. The black bean burger is phenomenal. I love the salad they serve with your burger. The quality is great. Happy to have a new place to eat and drink on college ave. Additionally, you can watch sports while drinking great beer, strong cocktails with a lovely bar staff.

I went here to watch the Bears Packers game with one of my Packer fan buddies. He is a regular here and he mentioned this is a Packer fan hangout. I loved the energy of the place and the great staff...Drinks arent too expensive and they have a ton of options for game time munching... Lot of TVs, lots of seating and a special Packers/primetime viewing area.. I love this place!! I would definitely recommend it even if you arent a packers fan...but if you are a Packers fan or if you are from WI, this place is a must go!!

Great atmosphere, quality prices, good service! I had the Nachos & chicken strips, very good. Great lounge area in the back for sports. Pool tables & honestly the crowd was really cool.

Pretty much your average dive bar, but I'm giving them an extra star for the food window on the side. It's really nice to go to a dive and be able to actually eat real (albeit unremarkable) food instead of just a bag of chips or something. Otherwise, it's pretty standard. They've got a couple of decent crafts (I know I got an Anderson Valley), some pool tables, and a pretty generous amount of seating. It's not a place that will really impress you, but it's a totally respectable neighborhood bar that I'd be happy to frequent.

I luv this place! The people are so very nice. I've been meeting girlfriends here for a few years to watch basketball games and I really missed them last year, due to the pandemic. This is the perfect "Cheers" bar, in a beautiful neighborhood. There's a new chef since I was there last. The food is amazing- some of the same menu items and some new, with specials. He delivers it to you himself, with a very nice demeanor. Okay, the bar: Drinks are hella good!! And if beer is your thing, there are daily specials.

They serve Molson and play Sharks hockey. Even if the Warriors were playing the SF Giants at Candlestick Park during kickoff, there is bound to be a tv for some god-damned hockey.

For a dive it's actually quite good and the food is excellent. Bartender was fast and I had a good time. 5 stars

Come for the food, stay for the ambiance. Anything at the grill is good. Today I tried the pastrami and thought, I know that anything I order here will be good. Boy was I right. Over the top goodness. Gooey cheese, caramelized onions, lots of good quality pastrami. Worth every penny. I only wish it was open during the week for lunch. Bar has a neighborhood feel and good prices for drinks. Bartenders take care of you, people are friendly. Big plus is the Sunday ticket. One of my favorites in Oakland.

I've been coming to George & Walt's for three years and it's gotten to the point where I now just come by even if my team (Eagles) isn't playing. The staff are fantastic and food is perfect bar fair. Family owned and operated and has a great blue collar vibe. Cash only. Great other locals there.

There was a DYL a few Fridays ago at George & Walt's. And since I had such a nice time at the previous event (Englander), I made time to stop by. Unfortunately, the starting time go moved back to 6:30 PM and I was squeezed between that and my son arriving at OAK. I showed up anyway at 5:30 and in the pouring rain. There was not a Yelper in sight, but there was a hockey game on and and inviting seat by the window for a draft beer and a comfortable street view. There were also light munchies available and some fun people watching inside and out. The bartender and patrons were also friendly and the price was certainly right. George and Walt's also strikes me as a friendly neighbourhood bar, almost Midwest in attitude, clean, and not so divey. The only thing I didn't like was the smoking area that you had to walk through coming and going. They also allow you to bring in food. And I should have done my homework before I came in, as sometimes a nice cold pint of beer requires more than potato chips and pretzels. I'm sorry for the missed DYL opportunity, but enjoyed the nice break from a busy week nonetheless.
