Best LGBTQ and Gay Bars in Houston, Texas | Eater Houston

"George is a no-frills, divey country sports bar with a pool table, darts, and a jukebox to entertain regulars and newcomers alike. Catch a game on one of the TVs while cheering on your favorite team with the crowd of hometown sports fans, down a specialty rainbow jello shot in one of George’s large novelty syringes, or chill out on the patio and enjoy the local scenery. Hungry? George also offers steak nights." - Lane Gillespie

By far my favorite gay bar in Montrose. No matter the time of day (7am-2am), the place is always happening. George has an eclectic clientele. Daytime, it’s more retirees and people working from their laptops. Happy hour is more professionals getting off work, and the night time can be a mix of ages and races. I will say the consistency of the crowd is that it’s mostly a 30+ crowd. Although that’s not to say there aren’t young chickens around. People in there 20’s do frequent, but it is mostly a more mature crowd. Game days can get pretty packed. It’s the best place to watch the Astros. They have multiple tvs inside and on the patio. The service is always good. I’ve been a regular here since my early 20’s, and the staff has hardly changed. Saturday nights with Danny and Crystal are so much fun. Also love Monday happy hour with Ryan. Sometimes I slip in to grab a beer from David. Boris always makes a mean Bloody Mary to cure even the worst of my hangovers. And Taylor on Tuesday is always a sweetheart. This bar feels like a home and I’m so glad to have this place to feel safe and celebrated

I love this place. It’s LGBTQ friendly and allows you to bring you food, so I usually get over with my friends and have drinks and do uber eats there. The drinks are reasonably priced and they have a parking spot as well.

George Country Sports Bar is a nice little hang out place in the Gayborhood. I came here during the holidays. I ordered a drink but it was not filled to the rim. But I think I like it here.

Being gay is great in Houston. Houston is the best gay friendly environment. Gay chimera would be so awesome here in Houston. Trump must allow me to make it possible. 💕 Love it so much. Guys are so sexy and hot. Bears, cubs, chickens, oh my. So many for the picking. My Space X team has a blast here!

I used to love coming here for the Jell-O shots. But my recent experiences have been disappointing. This past visit was IT for me. The first bartender was incredibly rude. I asked if there were any deals on multiple Jell-O shots, like they used to have, and he responded like I had insulted him. He just said, “Five dollars something per shot” without any explanation. I moved to the next bartender and made my way to the front of the bar, since there was plenty of open space. The guy next to me pointed to the back and said, “The line’s back there,” but when I looked, there was no line—just a group of people chatting in a circle. Honestly, after Trump’s win, this place has gone downhill. If you’re not white or don’t fit a certain look, don’t bother coming here. I’ve heard stories of issues like this before COVID, but after it, things seemed better for a while. Now though, after TRUMP, It’s just not worth your time or money.

It was my first time at George and it was a very nice, fun, neighborhood bar. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Always love George! It's always the best girl time when we are here. We make amazing friends and always have the best laughs.

Yelp
You know, I have not been to George Country Sports Bar for a long while. Why? Finding a parking spot in this Gayborhood has been impossible for many years. This time, I came here on Monday, January first. The bar was pretty full around 6 pm. I came here to cast a vote for the next Empress and Emperor of the Empire of the Royal Sovereign & Imperial Court of the Single Star (ERSICSS). To be honest, the reason I stopped going to gay bars is because I don't fit in. I always bump into young people. And, of course, they thought why an old man wants to come to the young people's bar. I had a completely different perspective at George Country Sports Bar that night. I felt like I fit right in. I was amongst similar aged crowd. Yay. I was reading the operating hours somewhere. Wow. This bar opens at 7 am. I hope they serve breakfast. Well, I can't get up that early anyway. I also heard about "country" part of the name was because country music is the default music if no one puts coins in the jukebox. No wonder the 80's dance music kept playing while I was there. I think I like it here. I would definitely come back when there are other venues or meeting someone or something.

Yelp
I've been a couple of times to meet up with an old friend for a couple of beers. The bar is exceptionally clean, the beer is ice cold, they have sports on the screens and the staff and patrons are friendly. Even though I'm not LGBT, this place is definitely a place I don't mind visiting to see friends.

Patrick M.

Yelp
My favorite gay bar in Houston hands down. Hope this bar never changes. LOVE steak night.

Yelp
I had been here nights before with my bf. Tonight I had no cash on me and I wanted to play pool table which required quarters. I asked the bartender if she could lend me some quarters out of kindness and instead she pointed me toward the ATM machine. I feel sorry for the next patron who will want to use the pool table and has no money or quarters.

Yelp
Like most Montrose area businesses parking is the biggest issue. So ride share or public transportation is my preferred method to enjoy the area. George is one of my favorite spots for sports and conversation. Always an eclectic crowd.

Yelp
I attended this bar tonight I had my first drink cool second drink I took a couple sip out of and accidentally knocked it over ok so the bartender pretended to serve me another drink but it was water with cranberry juice when I asked for another drink he assumed because my eyes are low I was sleep but I'm alert and awake just smoke so my eyes are going to be low but I knew exactly how I was being treated but it's ok he got a extra $12 and drink was only $10 I'll never come back I didnt cause a seen and I didn't argue back which he wanted to and I'm not here for that so I will not be returning here again thank to bartender who work tonight on2/25/2024 with a black cowboy hat on and $3walmart shit that worked on the end but the bathroom at 9:30pm at check your camera you'll see

Yelp
Not many places that open up at 7am!! Today had to wait for hours in the area for dr apt. What else to do- have 4 bloody Mary's, coffee with peanut butter whisky and baileys and two vodkas! Great service and customers were fun to talk with! I'll be back soon for more early morning bloody Mary's!!

Yelp
I was here from about 2-3 pm , me my mom & my girlfriend were just having fun playing pool. It's a bar, so were we whispering? No. Were we screaming? Also no. We were just being loud enough to hear each other. The bartender AND the people sitting at the bar told us to be quiet & started being very rude. Then the bartender asked if he was really getting a .75 tip? YES! After being terribly rude for no reason & laughing at your customers, yes. That's all you deserve. I've been coming here for years & now I'm never coming here again. They just lost a loyal customer.

Durant S.

Yelp
I visited George's this past weekend and all I can say is , it wasn't a good experience. The bartender was the only good thing, everything else wasn't. It seems that this bar attracts really low class people. I observed a black man damage one of the patio umbrella tables almost hitting me in the process, he was drunk and his friends did nothing. Another man hit a stop sign very loudly next to the bar because he was upset. I mean, really. People inisde were very loud and rude. Its too bad as the bar is in a nice location yet makes me cringe to want to go back there.
google avatar

Christopher W.

Yelp
This is a racist place they would not let myself in my friends park there, because we were black. I asked this week to him. I asked to speak to the manager. The manager came out and said to whiten inside, and said he believed him over me. The parking attendant was holding spaces from white people and not allowing Peyton from one of them hate to be.

Cordero R.

Yelp
If you don't enjoy your job, then maybe you shouldn't work there, Boris. I was asked to go somewhere else because the bartender didn't feel like working today.
google avatar

Yelp
Saturday after noon crowd was older.... Like me... friendly... and don't forget about David being the bar friendly with every one. And who can forget hello shots

Yelp
Dog friendly patio. Small parking lot. Stiff gay men's bar drinks. Barnaby's right across the street for some grub! (Their fries are fantastic!) Sports on TV. Smoking outside only. Super clean bathrooms. Crowd are mostly folks who are a little older (guys and gals) Gaming consoles. Jukebox that doesn't blare out so you can visit. This is a great little neighborhood gay bar, says this middle aged big city Lesbian. I'll visit often!

Yelp
Montrose is a large LBGTQ community, as we know, and this place has been a hot spot for everyone for years. No matter who, everyone has a place here to hang out or just to have a good time. They have a small parking lot, so it's best to probably get there early if a busy night is expected. The bar is located right across from Barnaby's, where you can go for some food. GET THE FRIES! It's a spacious bar in terms of people wanting to hang out, but the place itself isn't that big. I made a new friend with Jeremy the bartender, and he recommended to me which drinks I should give a whirl. I did try a Karbach Lovestreet beer, which is a local drink with a strong taste. There are also nights where local bottled beer is available for about $3, and shots are available for about the same price. Just ask the bartender. Steak nights are on Thursday's here from 6-9 and the people who run it are really great. This is when I will usually come to George, but it might be a crowded night. Pool tables, a jukebox, and some darts are available in this place to play, although you do have to pay a small fee in order to play. They do host pool tournaments sometimes on certain days, which is always fun to observe. An outside patio is available, which is the smoking area. If you come out on the patio, there will always be a friendly friend or two to meet. It's also dog friendly! If you're ever out and about in the Montrose area, come stop in to this place, a great Houston bar which has been in business for quite some time. Enjoy some drinks, games, and some chat with friendly people!

Yelp
Went here with a group of friends and family; I was the designated driver. While the rest of the group mingled throughout the bar, I sat at a table with one of my party. After about 15 minutes, the bar back came up to me and in a rude and assertive manner said "You need to buy a drink or leave, it's a one drink minimum". It was around 10PM on a Monday and aside from my party, there were no more than 10 people in the whole bar; we were all courteous and my friend and I at the table were just having a quiet conversation. Had he been polite, I would have explained myself, but the guy was just came off as a real jerk for no reason at all and I decided it wasn't worth my time and promptly left after my party had finished their drinks. It's a little ironic that I practically get kicked out a bar that bears my name, but that's Houston, go figure...Don't plan on coming here again.

Yelp
I'm a regular here and usually have nothing but nice things to say regardless of how other more drunken patrons may behave but for once I cannot hold steadfast in my positivity. A peculiar cowboy publican is the source of my perturbed puzzlement for this particular patronage. He seemed to have imbibed more than his fair share of spirits while in shift and I witnessed even more after that. His speech was slurred and he still managed to stammer and stutter. I waited near 10 minutes to be able to order whilst he was chatting away with whomever had his attention at the time. When I was finally able to order my first drink he walked away halfway through my order and I had to chase him to the other end of the bar to ensure it was correct. Soon after, I ordered a shot of Jameson Black Barrel and was served less than a shot of Southern Comfort in a rocks glass versus the usual shot glass other bartenders use. I was charged $6 though I gave him $10 because my shot is almost always $8 and I tip the extra $2, I received no change. I brought up the error as I refused the drink and he poured the correct liquor, again, into a rocks glass and again the shot was less than an ounce. I wasn't even going to ask for my change nor raise any more commotion than I already had as it yielded such results thus far. I normally have a 5 star experience thanks to the likes of the barbacks like Thomas and bartenders like Aaron, but it seems any night I show up when Aaron isn't working is a night I'm reminded of why I only visit on nights when Aaron works. I don't believe I'll be back on a Thursday night again.

Yelp
Jeremy is one of the rudest bartender i have ever encountered. As part of the discussion my friends and i were having at the bar, I asked Jeremy if he was top or bottom..... and granted... i know its not the classiest of conversations , But i have been out with jeremy to the rodeo and other events, so i thought he would think of it as funnyy...he didn't... as he might have been having a bad day , he was ignorant to everyone i was with. He then suggested we should leave....

Yelp
I am longtime regular to George's, now mostly Sunday through Tuesday Nights. Aaron the Bartender, Thomas the Barback and Georgio (newest barback) are the reasons I patronize the bar, they always make a point to welcome me as I enter the bar. I have never felt uncomfortable when I am here, due to the demeanor of the staff, and in the past they have diffused possible incidents with tact and professionalism. One of my longtime favorites, since moving here 12 years ago and I personally will come back and suggest to people who ask for a comfortable gay bar. As a rideshare driver, that question is a constant and my answer is "Georges"q

Louis L.

Yelp
Great place. Nice atmosphere. I hang out here often and always get great service. I would highly recommend it
google avatar

Bill T.

Yelp
Bartenders do an excellent job of avoiding eye contact of any sort! The good thing is you can sit here for hours and not spend a dime because the bartenders (esp the unhappy older gent with the glasses) don't want your money. On the plus side, if you do get a drink, everything is super cheap. We eventually got two vodka drinks and a beer (after beseeching the manager to please have someone wait on us twice!) and the total was $8. Also, the crowd seemed friendly. For a place that generates business by selling cheap drinks, my expectations are already very low but the really awful service was so astonishingly poor that even I was surprised. If your goal is a cheap drink served (eventually) with plenty of attitude, this is your place. I'd prefer to pay $15 for a drink and not be ignored.

Yelp
Kevin, Thank you for posting about your recent encounter at our bar. We are sorry to hear that you had a negative experience and have always appreciated your loyal business as a patron and friend. As you know, PRIDE is our busiest weekend of the year and we try our best to make sure everyone has a great time and our staff do the best they can under incredibly stressful circumstances to be great hosts. Unfortunately, sometimes there are things that happen that we are unable to fully witness firsthand and try to do our best in the heat of the moment to solve. While we understand your frustration, we would appreciate the opportunity to talk about this in person in order to figure out a solution that works for you, for Andrew and for the bar. We hope that you would consider coming to speak with us sometime during the day when Walter is there to do so. Please feel free to give us a call so that we can discuss a time that works. While we cannot control the actions of others and what led to this incident, we can figure out a path forward through conversation.

Yelp
Honestly, pretty comfortable for a straight guy. Met one of our bartender friends there before heading to Barnaby's for lunch. Then went back. Staff is super chill and it's not like you are getting hit on. Place is rad, don't be afraid to check it out.

Yelp
Danny is the best bartender ever! Thomas is such a fun person to hang out with! He needs to hang out with the customers more!

Yelp
I am going to post this in as many places as I can. I hope to get a response. I have gone to George's for many years, always bringing my 25 year old Parrot. Recently, a drunk old lady kept trying to stick her finger in his face. He barked, but has never bitten. Because of her drunkenness, she wouldn't stop. So, I finally moved away from her. Apparently she complained to George, the owner, that my parrot is dangerous, which he is not. Without even asking me about it, he banned Andrew (parrot) from inside the bar. So, he took the word of an old, drunken woman without even asking for the other side of the story. He certainly has the right to do this, but he has just lost some very loyal customers. And George, to be clear, I am going to loudly share this, and encourage all of my friends to patronize places that value regular customers.
google avatar

Katie T.

Yelp
I came to George with a friend for a drink in the afternoon and I had an okay time. When I first walked in, I immediately noticed how dark it was inside. I did get the vibe of a dive bar, but it was 12:30 in the afternoon and it still felt so dark in there. When the bartender came over, I asked if he had a drink menu and he said, "ummm, no?" in a very duh tone of voice. I felt the need to justify asking for a drink menu, which I have never had to do before in my life. Another guy laughed and said he had never heard anyone ever ask for a drink menu before, but he seemed very sweet and endearing, unlike the other guy. I ended up getting a Blue Moon, which was only $3.50. If that's their regular price, hey, I can get behind it lol. I don't think I'll be making a point to go back to this bar, but they do have cheap beer, which was a nice surprise.

Ben B.

Yelp
I really liked this bar. My go to place when I was in town last weekend. Very chill and good company. I see a couple of reviews about not feeling welcome as a straight person, but I had the opposite experience. I would say give it a try any time!

Yelp
Not impressed .. after living in the Montrose district for 10 years and never in this place... I go to this bar, waited to order a drink and the Old Bartender practically ignored me, So unfriendly and such a sour person.. Yep I didn't miss much after 10 years and driving by.... Lol!!!
google avatar

Eric P.

Yelp
I do like this bar, the drinks are good, I wish the bartenders would actually be more attentive to anybody other than the bears, but other than that, I do like coming here. The music selection is cool, and I do wish they had room for more pool tables.
google avatar

Eddie M.

Yelp
This is the spot. I don't like to troll the various bars in the gayborhood like I did when I was younger. George is my place to go. The staff is always friendly and the service is fast and friendly. It's an excellent place to meet up with friends and drink the night away. If you enjoy pool, there are two tables and they also have darts. There's a front patio to watch people as they troll from bar to bar and a back patio, to sit with friends and shoot the shit. There are a lot of regulars like me that Parton the place and you can usually find me on a Saturday night at Danny's side of the bar with a bag of Jolly Ranchers.
google avatar

Jeff K.

Yelp
I readily admit I spent less than five minutes in here. Why? I assumed, perhaps too logically, that a sports bar located in Texas would be *airing* a seminal Texas football game (UT vs. WVU, presently ranked 11th and 8th in the country respectively). There was also a solid Aggies game on. The UT game, unlike most that are aired on the ridiculous Longhorn Network, was on in primetime on Fox; the Aggie game was on ESPN, also in primetime. And what did George have on ALL of its many televisions? The UGA game! I mean, SERIOUSLY?!?!? I don't know if the owner went to U of H or irrationally hates Longhorns or what, but failure of *any* Texas bar to show *either* a UT or A&M game when they're on in primetime amounts to an EPIC FAIL of indescribably huge magnitude. And an unredeemable one at that. My list of permanently blackballed spots is short, and my time at George was the short itself, but it's now on the list.
google avatar

Melissa F.

Yelp
As I walked towards this bar which I knew nothing of on a Wednesday night, I cringed as I saw that the door read: "GEORGE Your Country Sports Bar". As I hate country music, and don't particularly enjoy sports bars, I was surprised when I was regaled by Lady Gaga when I walked in. Well, I suppose I shouldn't have been all too surprised. Evidently, they had been playing country music earlier... but this was Montrose. As this is a sports bar, the layout is pretty much what you would expect - dim lighting, a few dart machines and pool tables, and a small patio. But this is also a sports bar in the gayborhood - so expect friendly shirtless bartenders and patrons dancing along to the Lady Gaga songs. There is a parking lot next to the bar, but even on a Wednesday night it was full and I had to park on the street. Very fun crowd of various age groups, cheap drinks, good times.
google avatar

Jere D.

Yelp
This is right up there at the top of the list for a bar outing in Houston Montrose area. Great bartenders, good drinks and usually some club function going on. OH, and Sunday's, football season, come in for a great crowd to watch the games along with dollar vodka's. Very clean, well maintained, good times and good friends.
google avatar

Mia G.

Yelp
I am a fan of George's. Simple bar with a jukebox, pool tables, and darts. This is not the place you go if you want to dance but rather if you want to chat up a few friends and play a game of pool. Strong, very reasonably priced drinks. Since it is rights across the street from Barnaby's it is very convenient to drop in after your meal. Parking is not bad here in relation to trying to park near JR's or South Beach. Biggest perk... strong yet cheap drinks.
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
If you looking for a clean, cool place to hang out and have a few drinks... this is it!

John D.

Yelp
It does get really crowded on the weekends, but the bartenders are friendly, it's really clean and they have 2 smoking patios. The drinks are extremely stiff and a little pricey, but worth every penny. The crowd is pretty mixed but mostly late 30s to early 50s. Not full of young drama queens which is very nice. Everyone from the staff to patrons are actually friendly which is rare in Houston.

Patrick B.

Yelp
The local watering hole in the area and we had decided to watch a sports game there. The place has a "watch it the ole man cave built in the 80s feel." Very cozy and it seems a regular for the locals. Attentive bartenders make this place comfortable. Too bad they don't any small bar eats but good enough to watch sports with friends...
google avatar

Sam W.

Yelp
This a great place to meet up with friends for drink after work...It seems like a gay bar is a gay bar is gay bar no matter where you go or what city you are in...George Country Sports Bar is a great place to meet real men who are not stuck up or pretentious...Lot's of friendly guys who are down to earth... Great bar staff and service.
google avatar

Oliver B.

Yelp
Been here a handful of times, and have to say I have enjoyed it every time. No pretentious folks here. The bar staff seem to be on top of their game and are polite. It does get crowed during Texans games, but that's expected from a sports bar. The darts are a fun game to play with friends while you cocktail it up. Cheers!
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
One of the best run and cleanest bars in the neighborhood. I love that they host a lot of events to support the gay community. It really makes George a staple in the community. The crowd is most often very diverse in age which makes it a fun place to hang out. The drinks are VERY affordable and you can't find better prices in Montrose. This is a place I feel comfortable taking straight friends, coworkers and family. Would definitely recommend
google avatar

Darth F.

Yelp
Stopped in last night and had a really great time. We were being completely ridiculous. I'm surprised we were allowed to stay at all, in fact. Overall I can't decide which was better, Aaron's cocktails or his masterful and well warranted side-eye.

Yelp
I'm giving one start because of the rude bartender. I'm not from the US, I went there last week on Tuesday with a friend and He was trying to make a joke which I didn't get because I'm not from here and he got all like "whatever" instead of explaining it to me, which was very rude but I didn't pay attention to it. Then this week we went back on Monday, he wasn't really welcoming and then when I started asking about the happy hours, the kind of drinks/beers he had, he had a really stubborn attitude to me, so I limited myself to ask for a beer, then when I got the check of course I wasn't going to tip him, he didn't deserve it. When he saw the receipt and no tip then he said "ah! That's why I don't remember THEM, I forget because THEY don't tip. So, who's THEM? If it's because I'm Latin, that is racist. And if you want a tip you better be nice, you get what you give. So, not coming back to that place again!

Jason A.

Yelp
So tonight a group of 8 of us came for a birthday to enjoy a night out with friends, drinks and good food. Steak is advertised as a 6-10 event and we ventured out to the patio at 6:30 they had just started to set up. Around 6:45 we gave up and decided not to order along with a majority of our party. I understand things happen and you might run a little late but an hour is ridiculous especially when this is a weekly event that's been going on for years. As a third party cook the people should know to show up with plenty time to set up ahead of time to start serving at the time posted.

Daneil D.

Yelp
My friend went in and got a drink who I was riding with and they towed my car because it wasn't me that bought the drink. The manager was extremely unapologetic and the bartenders were also less than nice. Terrible service all around. The manager even smirked at me when I was explaining the situation. So if you want to come here and have a good time make sure not to park in their parking lot. UPDATE: I tried calling 4 times, yes FOUR TIMES. The fist time, I asked to speak the manager, who I was told was already gone. Then I asked what time they opened the next day, and what time they would be in (the manager or the owner) and which I was HUNG UP ON AGAIN) I tried calling 3 more times, no one answered. I believe the bartender who originally answered said his name was Danny (if that's even true, since they were all extremely rude to me). NOTE: I was sober. I was not belligerently drunk, in which case I could understand them being less than polite). My car was there for less than 45 minutes. And my friend was there drinking, and told me it would be ok if I parked there, since I was meeting him there. Keep in mind it was a Thursday night, there were three other cars parked in the lot. IT WAS NOT A BUSY NIGHT. Also, I drink there pretty frequently. Perhaps I'm not memorable enough to know that I do drink there and have spent plenty of money there. I know the rules with being towed and I have no issue with that, I understand why I was towed. But it was the treatment of the staff that really changed my opinion of this establishment. I work in customer service myself and I would never dream of hanging up on a customer. Or being smirked at and laughed at by a manager. So there it is, that's my story. All I have to say is be very wary of the staff at this bar if they like you they like you, if they don't don't be surprise when they treat you with absolute disrespect.
google avatar

Chad M.

Yelp
When friends call and want to meet for a quick drink without having to spend an hour to get ready - this is the place to meet. The staff is always very friendly and welcome all that walk (or stumble) through the door. On my last visit there were people from every demographic, so everyone feels at ease. They have a nice patio that you can take your drink out and watch folks pass by or go to Barnaby's. While it might not be the final stop of the night, it is at least on the tour.
google avatar

Paul J.

Yelp
Not much of a sports bar. You are lucky if they even have the sound on for a major game. Bartenders are about as friendly as mud. We liked it the first few times but realized it's just another stuck up gay bar. You can't have CNN on during the playoffs and call yourself a sports bar.

Yelp
I am a regular and this place is just that - a neighborhood bar. All the staff are amazing and friendly if you take the time to get to know them (had to put that in there after reading a couple bad reviews below). Georges is welcoming to everyone! Fun on game days, good drink prices, great service - I could go on and on. Love my Georges!
