George Inn Review - Southwark - London - The Infatuation

"The George is an old coaching inn in Southwark with a huge courtyard garden that’s likely to be mobbed on nearly any day of the year. It’s a nice pub with some okay food, but it really comes into its own on summer evenings when local office workers and traders join tourists, and anyone else who happens to be in the area, for a massive open air party fuelled by beer and dirty fries. Warning: there might be Morris dancers." - Oliver Feldman

Magic Cooking. We popped in here a couple of weeks ago and had the delicious sounding seafood risotto. Wow, how can one chef destroy what should be an easy meal to cook and enjoy. They had magically removed all taste and flavour. My guess is that it was cooked some days before and reheated. Absolutely tasteless.

A lovely building in an historic setting. Great food with lovely & friendly STAFF. Two outside sitting areas. Massive car park. All set besides the glorious Kennet and Avon Canal.

Three of us arrived for Friday evening supper. Young but very attentive serving staff, who looked after us beautifully. We started with the sharers board with a side of the crispy chicken. This was followed by a signature burger which was well cooked, good onion rings and crispy chips. We also had the fish and chips, we decided to have the extra bread and butter and scampi, we probably wouldnt do that again. The fish was tasty and well cooked. The final meal was the smothered chicken. This was rather over cooked and dry but a good flavour. I probably just had bad luck. The pub is welcoming and you are always comfortable there. It suits all ages, the parking is good the location is amazing. I would certainly recommend it.

Location is lovely. Right next to the Kennet & Avon Canal & a lovely gentle 2-mile walk from Bath city Centre. Has a nice garden and staff were very helpful and friendly. Classic pub meals at a reasonable price. Didn't have to wait long for food & drinks once ordered. Food was enjoyable and appreciated after working up an appetite on our walk. Ladies rest room was a bit tired looking would reasonably clean.

Nice place to have lunch. Easy access from the channel. The food was good ! You should maybe make a reservation as it seems a lot of people do so.

Popped in for lunch as stayed locally. Kitchen was about to close so ordered Omelettes to be quick. A bit pricey. Nice pub though, didn't go out the back. Atmosphere was dead as only a handful of people there. Expect more lively in the evening.

Update a few days later. Well my last review was drinks only as we couldn't get in so on our return to the area (narrow boat holiday) we stopped and reserved for dinner. I'm do glad we did as it was an exceptional meal, pictures here, and we were so pleased we came back. Look out for Natalie she is an excellent waitress (although that term doesn't fully do her justice she was an asset any establishment would want) She advised us on all our meals, helped settle a Shakespeare question, made our friends feel special by making coffee how the Americans like it, put an American amount of ice in their drinks, I could go on in short whatever she is paid double it! She alone brings more money into this place than the owners could possibly know. We are well, drank nice drinks, lovely coffee and left very happy! What a great old pub, and it is proper old! Outside and seating right by the canal so handy if you are on a boat. But we couldn't eat so don't assume that because it's big you will get a table, we couldn't!

Excellent service from our waitress but Sunday roast was disappointing. Not enough veg, yorkshire pudding was burnt so tasted bitter and the meal lacked any flavour and was very bland. The cauliflower cheese was more cauliflower in white sauce, no cheesy flavour at all. The whole meal needed more seasoning.

Yelp
Solid pub meal - fun place to stop after walking along the canal. Nice staff and great location

Yelp
Used to be a fantastic, simple country pub - ploughmans lunches, ale etc. Now it is some kind of weird hybrid between a restaurant, a chippy and a pub. The Cesar Salad is perhaps one of the worst I have had...perhaps the Fish & Chips are better?

Yelp
I am not surprised to learn that this is a chain. I was very disappointed. The inside of the pub has been ruined and the food was diabolical and not cooked from scratch, which is what I'd expect from a pub that is known for its food. Still, the building is beautiful on the outside and the location could not be more pleasant. There are lots of tables inside and out and the staff is very nice. Not one single local beer on tap! I am only giving it ** because despite all the lovely things it has going for it, the food is what it is known for and it was tasteless and not cooked from scratch. The soup tasted as though it was out of a tin but i discovered that it came from a packet. Soup is so easy to make. It was horrid.

Yelp
My favourite pub in the whole Bath and Bristol region, there is no better place for a Sunday lunch or dinner! The pub itself is a period building located in a quiet, picturesque nestling of a leafy village that immediately conveys warmth, character and a quaint, English charm. Indoors is a well-spaced yet homely feel, adorned with wooden beams and a fireplace too. Most of the pub is open plan yet cosy, and seating in an enclosed area is available too. In warmer climes however, you can dine on the terrace or out at the front. Not all tables are provided with sun-brellas though, and those without can leave you exposed to the sun. The staff tends to be locals or Bath Uni students, all of whom are polite. A varied menu offers generous portions of home-cooked British favourites, steaks and salads as well as a specials board featuring more contemporary and upmarket dishes. The food is very satisfying indeed, and desserts are equally sumptuous. What differentiates this pub from the rest though is its wonderful location, being situated by a canal towpath. During the summer there are few lovelier places to be. After lunch/dinner, you can work off the meal by going for a leisurely stroll along the canal or sit on the banks. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. This is somewhere you'd always look forward to coming back again and again.

Yelp
Love this place, fish and chips are lovely! good value for money and has recently been done up! The restaurant does turn more formal at night turning into waitress service taking your order from the tables although at lunch its very relaxed and they can either take your order or you can go to the bar at your leisure-which I prefer! I do recommend and visit here often.

Yelp
The George at Bathampton is perhaps best known in the summer months, as most people of walk or cycle along the canal will stop there for a drink or some food at some point! In the summer it is lovely as it has a large seating area outside and a large expanse of grass right next to the canal where you can stop and lie on the grass with a beer. It's also lovely and cosy in the winter too though! Inside the pub is all wood and traditional features, it's welcoming and friendly and a large place so there is usually a table free. The menu is good, and the food hearty and a good selection of beers and wine are available.

Yelp
1. Had to wait over an hour for meal and it wasn't that busy 2. One of our meal was slightly burnt and didn't taste very nice 3. Poor value for money due to small portions

Yelp
Costumer service was rubbish , waiting time was far to long

Yelp
Chef and Brewer chain pub. Above average, consistent food. Great canalside location. Not too expensive, but there are better places to go in the area. Good for a stop off if walking/cycling to Bradford along the canal.

Yelp
Magnificent food and service, we stopped there our first night and ended up eating there every day of our stay it was so good

Yelp
very disappointed to discover that we now have to pay to park in the carpark! it only gives 3hours which is not long if you wish to go for a decent walk along the canal and have a meal on your return which we have done many times we will not be visiting again
