First, the good. This is a traditional pub set back in a small alley. Easy to miss the old wooden sign if you're not looking, but still wasn't hard to find. They have a large courtyard that opens when it is warm enough with plenty of space to sit and enjoy a drink.
The mixed: because they are popular, they get very busy and run out. We arrived around 8 pm and they were out of many things. No salads, no cabbage, no steak ciabatta, no specials on the board, no butter, half the taps were dead, and no heads up.
Now the warning : if you are planning to go, call ahead for a reservation. We arrived later on Sunday, and had no problem getting seated. When we went to order (which you must do at the bar... no waitstaff), as mentioned most of what we asked for was out. I had ordered drinks and a steak and ale pie, so I had to cash out (which you must do when you order, no tab), then my wife went to order... and here's where they got rude. The bartender (maybe a different one) told her that since we did not have a reservation, she could only order from the starters or sides! If I hadn't already paid and picked up our drinks, that would have been when I walked, but since we had some food coming, we decided to split that and then find another place. While we were waiting, another table of 6 got up and left because they had gotten tired of waiting for their food to arrive, so we weren't the only ones frustrated.
The food was sub-par. The best thing on the plate was the merlot gravy. The pie was ok, but the crust was very thick and about 1/3 of it was too hard to be edible. The filling was ok but sparse in comparison. They replaced the cabbage from the menu with peas; this would have been fine, except that they were bone dry (remember, no butter). The very large mound of "buttered mash" potatoes likewise had no butter and was extremely thick. Thank goodness for the gravy, or that would have been inedible too.
