George Inn - Review - London Bridge - London - The Infatuation

"A creaky coaching inn with a courtyard that’s often mobbed, the George is the kind of pub where a toothless man would try and trade his shoes and daughter for your horse, back in the day. Its location down an alley between London Bridge and Borough feels improbable in modern times, but during the Elizabethan era this was a big outdoor performance space. Word is that big Willy Shakespeare may even have enjoyed a pint of 1664 here. Today, it really comes into its own on summer evenings when local office workers and traders join tourists, and anyone else who happens to be in the area, for a massive open-air party fuelled by pints and chips." - Jake Missing

Came here on the spur of a moment today. I've been wanting to come for ages as it's a National Trust property. This is a massive pub and restaurant. It has many different bars and seating areas. E chose to eat in the upstairs dining area, which was a lovely spot and peaceful compared to the rest of the pub. There's a great choice on the menu with something for everyone. Was tempted by the fish and chips but put off by the calorie content. Had the fish cakes and chips with loads of salad . The portion sizes were good, and food was tasty as well as being cakes. There's a smallish dessert menu, but the sticky toffee cake with Custurd was delicious. Staff were all really friendly. Definitely recommend booking a table, especially at weekends.

A great pub. Historic atmosphere and good beer. Plenty of seating inside or on the outdoor terrace. Very quiet location off the main road. Plus, it's close to the center and Borough Market. We recommend it.

Google
An astonishing surviving landmark of 17th Century London and an absolute MUST SEE & EAT HERE!!!!! It is wonderful that we can still be treated to monuments like this and ESPECIALLY while it provides some terrific food which can be consumed with the ghosts of Charles Dickens and Winston Churchill. Be sure to try the SALMON FISH CAKES and/or the STEAK CHIABATTA...some of the best food we had while in London. Be sure to tour the main bar and Parliament Room and see the story of William Pitt's taxes at 1797 THE PARLIAMENT CLOCK, an historic treasure.

Visited here 11am on a sunny Friday in May, what a place! We snatched a seat on the gallery and enjoyed overlooking the courtyard as the patrons slowly arrived. Very cool spot. History is cool but they are keeping it relevant too.

Google
This is a large venue with multiple screens, dozens of tables, and a good variety of beers. That having been said, the place was a filthy mess and reeked of garbage and dirty diapers. The bar was woefully understaffed, with tables full of dirty dishes and trash. The servers were certainly over worked and their demeanor showed it. We had fish and chips, beef pie and a chicken sandwich. The chicken sandwich was way overcooked. The fish was quality but the fries were stale and bland. The pie was ok. Extremely disappointed with the experience. No way I would go back or recommend anyone else to visit this trash pile of an establishment.

Google
We had a great Sunday roast dinner at the George Inn very pub. The atmosphere was just like in back in the old days a bit cold in the restaurant due to the cold outside, so please bring a jacket or overcoat. Our will hosted a great job and giving us a great service.

Google
Had a meal at The George Inn with a friend. It’s a Green King so the food is pub standard. The building though is just fabulous. Like stepping back in time. Absolutely lovely. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Google
The pub has a charming atmosphere with rustic decor, making it a great spot for drinks and socializing. The drink selection is good, offering local ales and craft cocktails. However, the food didn't meet my expectations. While they serve classic pub fare like fish and chips, the preparation was lacking—my fish was overcooked and the chips could have been crispier. Overall, it's a nice place for drinks, but I’d recommend looking elsewhere for a meal.

Yelp
We had a reservation for dinner, but didn't realize that there would be literally hundreds of people there with the sole intention of getting drunk. We wandered around until we found someone to help us find our table. Where got there we discovered that all the chairs had been appropriated by other guests. I found a staff member to ask about moving to a different area, or at least finding some chairs. After 10 minutes of waiting we finally left. The upstairs was largely empty, so we were hoping to move up there, but to no avail. I don't blame the revelers, but when making the reservation, they certainly could have made accommodations away from the drinking area. I'm sure the day worked against us (Oktoberfest), but the lack of concern by the staff was what annoyed me the most.

Yelp
This was ok. Touristy. Food was just ok. Service lacking. We ordered at the bar with the table number. Very busy place yet really nice to see the George Inn and learn the history. So all in all not a bad visit just not one I'd recommend for food downstairs. Perhaps the restaurant upstairs!

Yelp
I did have high expectations for this place however the George Inn left much to be desired. I'll start with the good. - we were able to find a place to sit upstairs, there is a lot of area to work with. As well as we were excited to get to be in one of the oldest pubs in the city. Reasons I gave less stars 1. The food was just ok. It doesn't make a place not worth trying or bad, and after eating at many other pubs in London this place didn't measure up 2. The bathrooms were not clean 3. Over all service and an order discrepancy. You have to order down at the bar and use your table number. This is not an issue but it is helpful if this is more obvious or told to you by the staff that is around the area. Issue with order - we dined on a Sunday and I was wanting the roast. I had my partner order for me and he ordered "the 28 day sirloin" as it was writer. On the menu. When I got my meal it was not that I had been given the sirloin steak. I went to ask if I could please exchange for the roast as that was what we ordered. The staff helping stated we should have said "Sunday roast" if I wanted the roast. Even though I did show her how the item appeared on the menu exactly how we ordered it. I asked to get a new one. It was stated it would take a long time and my table would probably be done eating. I asked for a to go box and she told Me she didn't have any. As well as this item cost 3£ more then the original item. I told her I would just keep my original food and when I returned to the table someone had removed it. I went back to ask and they handed me the plate from the kitchen, this time one of the onion rings was missing from the plate. My experience overall was not the best, but the pub was cute. I was very surprised how the issue was handled from a customer service standpoint and really hope that is not the way things are conducted regularly.

Yelp
This is a fine old spot in London - but the food is truly the worst we've ever had here - or anywhere. The server - who tried her best to do well explained that there had been a "mishap" in the kitchen. We should have left. The food didn't arrive for 40 minutes - and after about 2 bites we left and are now both suffering from food poisoning. Have a look and maybe a pint - but definately skip the food!

Yelp
Had to stop here and have a pint of londons oldest pub. They said shakespeare and charles dickens frequented here. Very old and historic, ever since the 1600's. I had a pint here of their own beer and it was great.

Michael L.

Yelp
Stopped in here because we had a party of 20 and they were the only ones who could accommodate us. I started out with a pint of lager and moved onto their signature pork belly dish. Boy what a pleasant surprise! The pork belly was seared nicely and there was a good fat to meat ratio. It sat on top of a bed of potatoes and cabbage and there was a nice tasting gravy. Others had the fish and chips which was also cooked well and tasted good also. I would come back again for the food. The beer situation could also be improved as they have the pub downstairs which has a much larger selection that isn't available in the restaurant.

Yelp
Had dinner in one of London's oldest pubs built in 1676. Place was packed on a Friday night but upstairs in the restaurant it was another world. Traditional British classics including fish and chips followed by apple pie and custard. Both delicious. Great service and all round experience.

Yelp
Service is extremely slow, we waited more than an hour and half to get our food. We were in the Stable section. Also no table service whatsoever on a Wednesday night. Maybe they do it on purpose to get you to drink more... Anyway v sour taste.

Yelp
As the oldest galleried inn in England this is a must for more than this!!! Super cute indoor and out! Shakespeare, Dickens amongst others frequented here ... I can just imagine what they would be talking about! Well it would be the George Burger!!!! BEST BURGER IN LONDON!!! It said pork belly on it and I figured it was bacon... no a full slab of deep fried pork belly that was a meal in itself!!! The fries were the BEST FRIES IN LONDON as well! To top it off the Coca Cola was cold and perfectly mixed from the fountain! A MUST eat!!!!!

Yelp
What an amazing experience. We had lunch at The George in Southwark today. Not only did we appreciate the Steak and Ale Pies, the selection of low/no alcohol beers, and the attentive service of Dean, but we reveled in the history of this Last Surviving Galleried Coach Inn dating back to at least the 15th Century. We especially enjoyed the quiet atmosphere and superb hospitality in the upstairs dining room while Euros 2024 football fans reveled in the courtyard below. So grateful that this historic property has been preserved and can be enjoyed in the same manner that others enjoyed it in the past. Thank you, Dean for some delightful hospitality.

Yelp
Brought coworkers from the states here for dinner one night and everyone enjoyed their offers. Service was friendly, and the set up was charming.

Yelp
Really enjoyed my visit here. The food was absolutely delicious. I had the cheese toastie which was lovely. We shared the chicken shared between us and it was enjoyed all around. The staff were all lovely and helpful. The restaurant itself was very clean, the toilets were also very clean. Would 100% come back here again.

Yelp
I'd rate the George Inn four and a half stars. Great courtyard. Came during a PL match and it was packed here. Few beers on cask plus some draft, came during a very busy time but the lines moved well.

Yelp
We'd been here once - last December - and I had good memories of a lovely old space, lovingly preserved, with period charm galore. My husband remembered that they didn't have Guinness, and was growly about that, but when we popped in yesterday it was raining pretty hard, and he just wanted to get into the warm and dry. I peeped through the window and, lo! A Guinness tap! So... maybe this would be a better experience? We walked in to randomness and chaos in the bar we entered. The pub is arranged discontinuously on the ground floor, with a couple of separate bars/serving areas. The one we were in was staffed quite shambolically, with 3 folks behind the bar barely able to keep up with the 6 or 8 patrons queuing patiently for a drink. While I waited, a manager type wandered back and forth with his key card, touching it computer screens and mumbling about something something inventory, while the woman on the side of the bar I was waiting at somehow disconnected the pay point. While she in her words "unfucked the payment system," I moved to the other side of the bar, where the other bartender ignored me. Between one thing and another we finally got our order, and it was... well, you can't really f*ck up a gin and tonic (except - served with a slice of orange? not a lime? really?) but WHOOOOOOOO BOY can you screw up a Guinness. Served in the wrong glass. Poured incorrectly. Tasting of metal and bacteria. Absolutely minging and completely undrinkable. We did find a place to sit, and again, the bar is charming as all get-out... but the service is dreadful and slapdash and deeply uncaring and off-putting, and the Guinness was a horror show, so we won't be going back.

Yelp
Near Borough Market. Great atmosphere. Bar has existed since 1600s. Lots of carved wood panels and bar. Just stopped for drinks after spending a few hours walking around the market. Refreshments hit the spot. They serve pub food that looked very good. Customers obtain drinks and order food at the bar. Drinks are prepared at the time of order and food is brought to table when ready.

Jeff B.

Yelp
Fish was larger than the plate. The place was alive and vibrant. Such a fun experience!

Yelp
Loved this restaurant! The food was fabulous, the service was great, and I absolutely loved the feel, ambiance and history. We ate in the upstairs restaurant - one of the best meals in London! The Biergarten area looked so fun also! Great place all around!

Yelp
Oh, so good. We had the steak and ale pie. Staff was super helpful with a couple of tourists who needed explanations on how the service "worked". Step 1, grab a table, look at the menu, note table number. step 2, go to counter and order food and drinks. Step 3, enjoy yummy British food and drink!

Yelp
There's a shortcut to get into the back of The George; it's a small tunnel off of Borough High Street that leads to White Hart Yard, a small alleyway. There's a sign in the tunnel for "The George". This entrance leads to an expanded section of The George (it seems to be run by the same company now, but it's possible it's another business that's just blatantly stealing the name) that was formerly the Heeltap Sports bar. It shares the main courtyard with The George, but it's basically just some extra space and the service bar for the tables in the courtyard. We were tired so we just sat here. They have a limited menu and no service (we had to order food from the bar). It's a generic space that's pretty empty and not historic or interesting (like the main section of The George Inn) that's on the other side of the Courtyard. If you see the sign in the tunnel just keep walking. The main entrance is just a few more stores down. This is where the much more interesting and historic section of the restaurant is and is probably where you want to eat.

Yelp
Tucked away just outside Borough Market, we found the pub at The George Inn to be so enjoyable! We loved walking around the courtyard and uncovering bits of history, experienced speedy service during a busy time, and enjoyed our food and drinks!

Yelp
First, the good. This is a traditional pub set back in a small alley. Easy to miss the old wooden sign if you're not looking, but still wasn't hard to find. They have a large courtyard that opens when it is warm enough with plenty of space to sit and enjoy a drink. The mixed: because they are popular, they get very busy and run out. We arrived around 8 pm and they were out of many things. No salads, no cabbage, no steak ciabatta, no specials on the board, no butter, half the taps were dead, and no heads up. Now the warning : if you are planning to go, call ahead for a reservation. We arrived later on Sunday, and had no problem getting seated. When we went to order (which you must do at the bar... no waitstaff), as mentioned most of what we asked for was out. I had ordered drinks and a steak and ale pie, so I had to cash out (which you must do when you order, no tab), then my wife went to order... and here's where they got rude. The bartender (maybe a different one) told her that since we did not have a reservation, she could only order from the starters or sides! If I hadn't already paid and picked up our drinks, that would have been when I walked, but since we had some food coming, we decided to split that and then find another place. While we were waiting, another table of 6 got up and left because they had gotten tired of waiting for their food to arrive, so we weren't the only ones frustrated. The food was sub-par. The best thing on the plate was the merlot gravy. The pie was ok, but the crust was very thick and about 1/3 of it was too hard to be edible. The filling was ok but sparse in comparison. They replaced the cabbage from the menu with peas; this would have been fine, except that they were bone dry (remember, no butter). The very large mound of "buttered mash" potatoes likewise had no butter and was extremely thick. Thank goodness for the gravy, or that would have been inedible too.

Yelp
My wife and I came to England on our honeymoon and wanted to find a place where we could get a drink and some great food. Wow! This place was outstanding in every way- great atmosphere, great location, and we loved the food! Dean was awesome too!

Yelp
One of the oldest pubs in London, The George was very charming and lovely. There was live music in the balcony and that made the ambiance even nicer. Jazz band played some great tunes. I visited London recently and a friend suggested we met here. Close to London Bridge station, The George is well known in this area and you can tell given how busy it was, even early in the evening. Had some beers, all which were delightful. Many draft and bottle options so choose wisely. Sit outside on a cold evening and get warm up by the delicious brews. Enjoy the music and have a nice chat with friends or any of the guests enjoying the place. Overall, great place. A must to visit when around London Bridge area in London.

Yelp
Great London pub food! We came here on our first night in town to enjoy some traditional pub food and drinks. About 10£ for a pint and large glass of wine, very reasonable. Fish and chips and meat pie were about 12£ each. I had the pie which had a really nice flavor inside and the crust was outstanding. I got chips instead of mash and only ate a few but it wasn't because they weren't good. It was just a lot of food. The veggies were also very tasty. I liked that there were carrots with the peas to add some more color to my meal. My husband said his fish and chips were really good. He finished everything on his plate... great sign! (Tip: If it's your first time to a pub like this, you order you food and drink at the bar and they bring your food when it's ready.)

Yelp
This was probably my least favorite meal in all of the ones I had throughout my 9-day stay in London. My friends and I had just finished taking some touristy shots of the Tower Bridge, and we were looking for a dinner place that was close to our hotel. Yelp told us about the George, which had really great reviews. Plus they had Sunday Roast, which was something I wanted to try while I was in the UK, so we decided to venture on over. There wasn't a wait for our group of 4 on a Sunday at around 7. I ordered (as might have already guessed) the Sunday Roast. The meat was dry and chewy. My friend ordered the same thing, but well done - so I can only imagine the workout that her jaw had. My other two friends ordered something else, I can't remember what - but they were drenched in the same gravy as the Sunday Roast, so everything ended up tasting the same. The atmosphere seemed to have that authentic pub experience - old with some charm. Unfortunately, the food was just old, without any charm.

Erin J.

Yelp
Disappointed in this place. The burger was fine. Nothing amazing. The hubs got the beef Sunday dinner and he said he's had better. The cobbler dessert was not good at all. Apples were undercooked and the crumble on top was very chalky. Yuck. Super cool to read the history of this place but definitely not a place I'd eat at again. Service was good though.
google avatar

Chris E.

Yelp
The George was sort of hidden, but not really. At first, it looked like an alley, but the alley led to a large outdoor space with picnic tables outside of the actual pub. The pub itself had plenty of tables and space, but if it's a nice day, I can definitely see one sitting outside to enjoy a pint or food. We visited in the late afternoon on a Friday and the place wasn't crowded, but there was a good amount of people inside.still. As with all pubs, we ordered at the bar after taking a seat inside the pub. We ordered the Fish & Chips and Shin of Beef & Ale Pie. Fish & Chips The hand-battered cod was served with deviled whitebait, crushed peas, bread & butter and chips. The cod was good, but nothing extraordinarily memorable, but it's not to say it wasn't flavorful still. Same could be said about the chips. As for the crushed peas, it was an interesting side as I had never tasted it before. The texture was almost like mash. The deviled whitebait was a nice palette changer, as even though it was fried, it had a very different flavor than the cod. Shin of Beef & Ale Pie (Served with potatoes & fresh vegetables) In summary, the beef and ale pie was a pot pie. The presentation was very nice and it was served on top of a healthy serving of mash and fresh vegetables. The pie was really good, filled with plenty of beef. The vegetables and mash underneath went really well with the gravy from the pie. In a very busy area, I had no regrets about going to The George for a lunch pit stop. The spacing was plentiful and the food was good. That's all we could have asked for since we were starving prior to our stop here.

Yelp
My wife and I were in London and our first stop for a meal was The George. I ordered a beer and the fish and chips. It didn't take too long for the meal to come and they had quite a good selection of beers. I ordered the house ale, which was quite good. The fish was super hot and the chips were good as well. I haven't had fish and chips in 15 years probably, but I had to try them in London. I don't need to order them again, but they were good for what they were. The added malt vinegar was awesome with the dipping sauce. The atmosphere adds an extra star for sure and the service was great.

Yelp
It was a great location in an alley with a lot of character. It is a classic English Pub with great food. Waitress provided unbelievable service and she worked hard providing service to the entire room of 10 tables. Despite the large number of tables she engaged with everyone. One of the finest waitresses that I have ever encountered - she never stopped. They had a number of rooms all with a lot of character and great outside sitting area with outdoor heaters. I would highly recommend.
google avatar

Shay M.

Yelp
Great spot! Incredibly crowded outside but lots of seating indoors. Order at the bar. Cold beers and cider and tap. Had fish and chips and the Mac and Cheese and both were excellent. Would recommend to anyone who has the time and patience to deal with the crowds.

Yelp
Set way back in space and time from the craziness of London Bridge and Borough High Street, this place is a welcome refuge and an easy walk from the London Bridge Underground station. One of my favorite meals in an 8-day UK trip. Yes, it's a Greene King corporate operation now, but still has plenty of history and character and family-friendly. We were blessed with good weather that Saturday, so we enjoyed our lunch on one of the many picnic tables out in the beer garden courtyard patio. Busy, but not so packed that you couldn't find seats. At least one friendly local offered to share. I don't believe that there's a kids' menu, but my son enjoyed his giant hot dog and my daughter liked her beef pie, which was served with traditional tasty roast carrots and parsnips. I liked my £5.95 fish finger sandwich- good value. Note your table number and order in the Main Bar. Pleasant service from the food runner.
google avatar

Michael Z.

Yelp
Walked in for dinner. First night in London and super excited for meat & ale pie. Sat at a table upstairs. 10 minutes went by and no one came around at all. Moved down to the lower level, same thing. We said hello to a buster/runner. He said hello back and then nothing. We walked out. If you're going to have people seat themselves then someone needs to keep an eye on new tables.

Yelp
This is a nice place to visit for a good meal as it was close to the Shard. The entrance is thru a alley where you see a yard fill with people as there are numerous bars. You have a choice of eating and drinking or a restaurant. Please note - if you plan to eat at the outdoor or bar table - you will need to order your food and drink at the bar and to remember your table number which is listed on the table. Fir me - I decided to go to the gallery restaurant which is on the second floor. The menu is simple and our waiter deon was great. I had the fish and chip as the portion was large and my wife has steak and ale. They have a good selection of beer as I had the Erik oil keg. I would recommend the place as the price is right and the atmosphere is like a English pub. Our waiter really entertain and funny as well as he explain our menu So if you near the Shard - give this place a try

Yelp
Enjoyed hanging at this old bar. Couldn't believe the inn once housed Shakespeare amd Dickens. Truly an honor for me. Had a few pints and some laughs here with friends. Food is available in the restaurant if your hungry and the staff here is very friendly. Ill be back.

Yelp
One of the great features of this pub is the location. It is located just a very small walk away from the Borough Market and a great respite from a day of eating one's way through a market. The pub itself is just so quaint and cozy. It reminds me of how really old it is. The pub itself is made up of several little rooms and an upstairs where the kitchen might be? Or it could be another dining area. I noticed the cooks running up and down the stairs getting ready for the lunch rush. The interior is full of rich wood and plaster walls and wonderful smells coming from a kitchen. It is a great place with little nooks to sit and I spied several business folks hanging about having a pint and a chin wag. The service was very attentive at the bar, I didn't even get a strange look when I asked for a half pint... I know, what a wuss.. it was early in the day and what I was looking for was a warm meal. I got the chicken special and mashers. Both did the trick. If you are heading out to have a few pints in SE London, this would be a must stop along the way.

John S.

Yelp
I had the best meal and service here and wan going back on my way back through London. I had a few pints outside but ate upstairs inside. The lady who was serving the area that I sat in was so outgoing and friendly. The fish and chips was very good and so reasonably priced. I was able to walk here from my hotel, but I'd take a taxi without hesitation.

Tom M.

Yelp
Easy seating and quick food in this quaint rustic Pub. Fish was delicious. Desserts even better.

Yelp
The George Inn is actually made up of several connected bars/restaurants. The place has a long history (since the 17th century) and the atmosphere certainly shows it. Food choices are mostly traditional English pub food, such as fish & chips, steak & ale pie, and sausage. The Parliament Bar houses one of the oldest clocks in any British bar (hung in 1797). Nice place for dinner or drinks (just remember to order at the bar and remember your table number).
google avatar

Carl B.

Yelp
Great old space, lots of history and character. Beer selection and food were mediocre, and even if you've grabbed a table, you have to go to the bar to order. Which would be fine except it's hard to open two doors when holding three beers; or at least, I had trouble making the math(s) work.
google avatar

Yelp
Great atmosphere, good food, fantastic house beer. Had fish and chips and house ale while traveling through. The fish was very fresh and the house beer was very delicious. Wish we had more time to come here for beer again. As a bonus we also saw a cool local group jamming in an adjoining Parlament pub. Yelp lead us here and did not disappoint.

Paul R.

Yelp
This is your classic old London pub with all the classic dishes. If you want to enjoy a meal in an authentic old pub setting, you have several sections of this house as bars and restaurants.

Matthew D.

Yelp
Came here for a Sunday Roast. Really awesome little courtyard. Unfortunately the food was average at best. Large amount of good quality meat but the veggies and sides were very lacking. Both in quantity and taste. I think this place is better for enjoying a drink in the traditional English surroundings . Not a place to come to for food alone.
google avatar

Wendy D.

Yelp
Cute Pub/restaurant. Tried their Fish and chips. Very happy with my choice. The fish was battered and fried to perfection. We got lucky enough to hear their local band play. Turns out they are just a bunch of musicians that get together every 3rd Monday of the month and have a jam session. Loved every second of it.

Yelp
The fish and chips here are freakin' heavenly. My cousin and I planned to try this plate during our day visit to London and I'm so happy we came here! The employees were a delight and very helpful as we had been a little confused on how to order and so forth. A lovely lady let me try out some beers to pick one out for my meal. Thank you so much for that! I dream of the fish and chips here every now and then. I hope to go back one day soon!

Yelp
The roasted cauliflower on the roasted cauliflower sand chili salad is not roasted. And the chili is a bit of fresh sliced. But the rest is a Mediterranean selection that goes well together and is very satisfying. Surprised but pleased. Dip your cauliflower and cucumber in the hummus and babaganoush and feel healthy but then don't viscously attack the bangers on your kids plate or you kind of blow it. The kid had sausage and mash and the kale and multi colored carrots elevated it a bit. Enjoyed the French white by the glass and the ambience.

Yelp
The George Inn was recommended to us by a local. We were looking for a place to watch a World Cup match. We are so happy we followed his suggestion! During the World Cup, they had a huge screen and lots of tables set up. The place was packed but the atmosphere was intense and so much fun! So cool to drink a beer and hang out in a bar that is older than the United States!

We came here for dinner and drinks. The locals are all in the courtyard, while we had dinner in the upstairs dining area. We tried the tomato soup, fish and chips, and finished with the Sticky English Toffee desert (a la mode). The food was delicious, the service was great as well. We hit the jackpot for dinner.
