20 Places to Visit Along West Virginia's Country Roads

"Tapping into what is presumably a small, yet apparently existent focal point of historical interest, Berkeley Springs State Park demonstrates the tools used back before 1784 to create the tub from which our founding father would presumably use to rub-a-dub-dub. When George Washington was a strapping lad of 16, he was a surveyor’s assistant that frequently visited the West Virginian warm springs (a constant 72 degrees) for a relaxing bathing experience. Eventually he purchased property in town, (at that time known under the more obvious moniker of “Bath”) and continued to use the springs as a favorite place to freshen up. Berkeley Springs remained, throughout his lifetime, a favored spot for the president to dine, relax, and of course, bathe.  Before being completely enclosed by the bathhouses in the 1780s, the more primitive baths consisted of hollowed-out trenches that filled with fresh spring water, and were lined with sand and stones. For privacy, brush was woven into natural screens, and designated times for male or female bathers were instated.  Now a favorite spot for hikers to stop and pose for a photo or even give their feet a little soak, the bathtub attracts much attention from tourists and locals alike. While the stone structure is not the actual bath in which Ol’ Georgie scrubbed behind the ears, it is a modern replica built to represent those that were lost through time. The springs bubbling up into the tub however, are of course one and the same. An annual event celebrating George Washington’s Bathtub is held in mid-March on the weekend nearest March 18, anniversary of Washington’s first visit in 1748." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The Gulp War: Inside the World’s Largest Water-Tasting Competition | Eater

"A small carved-out pool at the warm spring long associated with a presidential bathing anecdote; it features a well-known spigot where locals and visitors routinely fill gallon jugs, serving as a tangible historical attraction adjacent to the event venue." - Dave Stroup

Very cool! So this is where George Washington‘s bathtub sits. It’s funny how it’s just out in the middle of nowhere, but I guess that’s how things were back in the day. I was so excited to visit Berkeley Springs with my family. We were within walking distance of Berkeley Springs State Park . Everything in this area is really nice. The museum, Gentleman‘s Spring and Bathhouse, the healing waters and especially the bath. I made sure to step down into it. Be sure to be careful as the stone the bottom is a little off kilter so hold on when stepping in. It was really neat to say that I had stood in this. A definite memory! Good for kids and not too crowded. We took a loop around to check everything out. Highly recommend! * Wheelchair, accessible entrance and parking lot.

Wonderful experience! The sauna here is just right - a real steam sauna, not infrared. They provide lockers, robes, slippers, showers, restrooms, mineral water, and a hot mineral bath. Everything is spotless, and after the sauna you feel completely renewed. The staff are so kind and welcoming, wishing them all the good things in life 🙌🏻🌟

Very cool to walk where colonial George Washington did. He bathed in the mineral spring waters there. Beautiful mountains and natural springs that also offer more modern spring baths. The water was refreshing to my legs and feet. Going back to try a full mineral bath at 102 degrees.

Soooo cool to see with my own eyes! It reminds me of the Indian punchbowl in Fredericksburg. You can see the mineral build up!

It was a healing place for me and my husband. Not. A lot of people for a Tuesday easy parking in front 44$ for one bath house for two people. Waiting about ten minutes with no reservation. Free natural spring water right next to it. Bring your own jug or get one inside the bath house for donation of 1$ . One day trip.

Always love coming here to visit. The bath is a 5 minute stop to dip your feet in, but the town is a quaint little town filled with hidden jems...
