A pizza pub by night, kolache kitchen by morning! Gerik's is the old local favorite.
The building is full of country kitsche: old Gulf gas pump, deer head mounts, a real mounted Lynx, and Elvis Presley 12" record album covers On The Ceiling!
A Land Shark surfboard, oddly, does not seem odd in this hoardhouse! There it is!
Walk toward the back and a huge glass case has all types of baked goods, and Kolaches!
Young lady from the Gerik family knows why I'm here already. Howdy, stranger what flavor Kolache ya looking for?
She explains her Mom is making a batch of pizza dough at the moment. She also has some custom cake orders to fill.
The display case is pretty full. I notice a stand behind marked "Day Old" with discounted bakery items.
I bought some Kolaches, and to help out 'Ol Gerik's I also bought a big 'ol Stuffed Pecan Roll and a cup of coffee.
I had already sampled the kolaches at Little Czech, Slovacek's, and CEFCO Gas Station's Kolaches! I was full, a little.
I was going to save the Kolaches for the rest of my interstate travel. I dove into the Pecan Roll... and it was a bit chewy, full of cinnamon & pecans, but very chewy. Hmmm, under-cooked a bit? Oh well.
The Kolaches were spot-on. Apricot is my fave. I took the others for the road.
So, a final walk-around the 2 large dining rooms, and more old album covers on an other wall, it was time to go.
I did all 4 of West, Texas' kolache joints, and overall, Slovacek's is King, Little Czech is #2, CEFCO is #3.
Gerik's is special, in it's own lane, up away from the I-35 a bit. Away from the crazy crowds, and doing okay.
