"Dark (bauernbrot) and white sourdough are available daily at this German bakery in Northeast. It is, unsurprisingly, a crime to leave without a pretzel or two in hand." - Eater Staff

We first went to The German Bakery 15 years ago at the suggestion of the nephew of the owners. We kept intending to go back each time we were in Portland, Oregon, but this time we finally did it. Alas the former owners have retired but we found the bakery just as charming...and even bigger. We wish we could have bought one of each delight there, but settled for just a few. We love the Raspberry Linzer, but you MUST buy a pretzel when you are there, too! We will not miss The German Bakery on our next trip to Portland.

My grandmother is german born in what used to be Czechoslovakia and when she came her this is the bakery/deli she goes to...great leibakase, hungarian sausage beerwurst, love the keizer rolls. And the people that work there that aren't of german decent speak german. Makes those who come from Bavaria able to speak their languages while finding the foods they grew up with

When I go to the German Bakery I feel at home, I guess because I am German. LOL I love German bread, bread rolls (broetchen oder schrippen) quark, smoked ham, (westfalen schinken) wiener sausages (wuerstchen) and all the other thinks that reminds me of my old home.

I went there last week and it isn't really German anymore. Most of the German groceries are gone. Also the magazines are gone. I was very disappointed because I always liked that store before it changed that much.
