Good but not great.
I had a craving for pasta, so my husband and I decided to give Gersi a try. We made reservations at the last minute, so we could only get seats at the bar. The restaurant is small, cozy, and a bit cramped. Expect a lot of bustling and noise, which doesn't bother me. The service at the bar was great, even though both bar tenders were hopping keeping drink orders filled.
We started with the black kale panzanella, and the black pepper Caesar. The panzanella was very tasty with a wonderful piquant dressing - tender kale, lots of tomato, and chunks of grilled whole wheat bread. The tomatoes and bread could be better. The tomatoes were the standard hard, unripe, "plastic" kind with no flavor. C'mon. Can't an Italian restaurant get decent tomatoes? The bread chunks were too large for the salad and I had to cut them, plus the bread wasn't grilled enough to be crispy. The Caesar salad was decent, but didn't make my Caesar-aficionado husband say wow.
My husband ordered the chicken Parmesan with a side of roasted cauliflower, since he doesn't eat pasta. He loved the chicken; very tender, smothered in a nice marinara and tons of cheese. The cauliflower was delicious, coated in lemon and cheese. Unfortunately, the cauliflower wasn't very warm, and the florets were too large. It would be much better if served hot with bite sized chunks.
I ordered the tagliatelle pasta with lamb ragout. The pasta was cooked perfectly Al dente, and was coated in a luxurious tomatoey sauce with chunks of ground lamb. It was very tasty, but for a meat ragout I expected small bits of ground lamb in each bite. Instead, there were several larger chunks that I had to cut to eat with the pasta. The flavor was on point, though.
The restaurant provides complimentary bread served with garlicky white beans. The peppery olive bread was out of this world.
We had a lovely dinner, and I couldn't help thinking that with a bit more attention the food could be great, not just good.
