The Gerst Haus, One of Nashville’s Oldest Restaurants, Will Close Next Week | Eater Nashville

"After 62 years in business, the German restaurant and bar at 301 Woodland St. will close its doors later this month; The Tennessean confirmed with restaurant reps that next Saturday will be its last day of service, though an exact reason for the closure is not currently known. First opened in 1955 by the Gerst family, the restaurant was relocated from its original spot to Woodland St. in 1970; current owners Jim and Jerry Chandler purchased the restaurant in 1988 and had to move it again to its current Woodland location to make way for the construction of the city’s new professional football stadium." - Matt Rogers

Google
Had the catfish, French fries and coleslaw with good beer. I had more breading on my catfish then fish meat, the French fries tasted and looked like old grease the reason for three stars. Coleslaw and corn bread was the best part of the meal. We did not try any German food as we just returned from being over there for two months. The main reason for coming was to have catfish which it wasa while since we had some. Real let down

The food is AMAZING! Seriously. The service is good (my waitress was very helpful), the "atmosphere" is good, and they have a very interesting story, (It used to be a hardware store), but if you like sausage and wienerschnitzel, then you will LOVE this place. I literally got out my phone to take a picture, and before I knew it, I had eaten everything off of my plate. And I ordered the "sausage sample appetizer", and that was all I could eat... so the price value is probably the best you'll ever find for a "nice" restaurant.

Google
This is an excellent place to eat and drink. It looks like a German hunting cabin on the inside. They have a crazy amount of beer on tap. The food is excellent. Gotta try the German potato salad. All the sausages are wonderful.

Google
We were greeted by the friendly staff, and our server was friendly, helpful and attentive. We started our meal with the Bavarian Pretzel. Soft interior, chewy and a little bit salty, but overall very delicious especially with the side cheese sauce. My wife ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger with Coke Slaw, and thoroughly enjoyed it. My son ordered the German Bologna Sandwich with German Fries, but he did not like it. He said the meat lacked flavor, wished that another cheese was used because the pepper jack did not add much to the flavor profile, and the German fries were dry. I ordered the Smoked Mett Ring Sandwich, and loved the smoky flavor of the meat and tge casing had a nice snap. The bread was fresh, and the Sauerkraut added some tanginess that added even more flavor. The Hot German Potato Salad was a bit too sweet for me.

Google
Great way to end our trip. All was excellent. Charming outside and true German in. We went at lunch but split a dinner combo. Maybe $24. We got schnitzel, stroganoff w spatzle, goulash and 1 extra side of German cabbage w rye bread. So yummy. Ate plenty and still took home another meal. Maybe it wasn't my favorite spatzle but all else was heavenly and rye bread, which I don't even like, was a taste sensation in my mouth. . Oh, and the German beers and cocktail menu was long and a long ago eras pricing. So cheap. Love finding places like this. Wish I lived closer so I could be a regular!

Google
This is a great place to eat. The German food and beer are fantastic. The service was good and the old-timey atmosphere just adds to the experience. Would definitely visit again.

Google
Great German place. The staff was nice the food was great. I tried a sampler so I could try several things and it was all good. If your in Evansville stop in and have a bite

Stephanie B

Google
The inside is beautiful but we enjoyed our meal and the weather out on the patio. All the food was amazing, very large portions! We didn’t realize the pick 3 samples-combo platter was full size portion’s. The pretzel 🥨 is a must order to share with the whole table!

Yelp
The closest thing to a warm hug you can eat. I travel from Wisconsin to Evansville every month for work, and being away from home never gets easier. Although, this little German gem softens the blow like a plate of perfectly cooked comfort food. The staff? Heartwarming. The food? Worth writing home about. Victoria was my waitress on this visit, and she made me feel like I was having dinner at home rather than counting down days in a hotel room. Her kindness and attention turned a work trip dinner into something personal and memorable. Huge thanks to the entire team for creating a place where travelers like me can find a bit of home away from home. See you next month--save me a spot and a schnitzel!

Michael H.

Yelp
I have seen a few negative reviews from, most likely negative people. My wife and I were in town for a concert and had a wonderful experience. The ambiance was warm and interesting, was the food authentic German cuisine?, I don't know and really don't care. Everything was well prepared and delicious. Most of all our service was top shelf. I don't remember his name, but he was attentive, friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend it and if we are ever in town again, we will definitely go back.

Yelp
Had a great visit at the Gerst Haus. Be sure to check their menu! We got to sample a variety of Spaten besides the lager they usually sell Thanks to Devin who gave us great service and recommendations. This beer hall restaurant reminds you of OctoberFest celebrations in Germany. It's my usual go to place in Evansville and this time the tenderloin sandwich was one of the best I've ever had. Thanks Devin and the staff at Great Haus for a great evening with my sons!!

Yelp
First, such an awesomely authentic German haus. Great vibe. There's more though. I give it all star A's for everything. Food was so so yummy. Huge german selection. Friendly and fast service. Beer and spirit menu 5 or 6 pages long and CHEAP. We split the combo plate with schnitzel, stroganoff and goulash. Spatzel and cabbage for our sides. I don't even like rye bread but this was heaven. All Scrumptious and took lots home and that was 2 adults splitting for lunch. This ended our trip on a perfect note. BTW, I disagree with the review that said pricey. We're from st. Louis and this was a bargain.

Yelp
Attempted to eat lunch here today. However, despite their website saying it was open from 11a-9p on Sunday's, it is not. Super disappointing as I was craving German food!

Yelp
If you are a fan of German food and fun atmosphere be sure to check out this place! Our wait staff was fabulous and friendly! Everything we ordered was delicious. The building is super cool and has been maintained so well. I can't wait to return and sit outside or enjoy Oktoberfest! Prost!

Sarah W.

Yelp
Wish I could rate this a 0 - just warning this is NOT German food and was barely edible. (Note: Lived in Hessen for 3 yrs) Their knowledge of the cuisine is non-existent- the server didn't know what the menu was. The rotköhl was too tough to chew and wrong flavor (how is cooked cabbage tough?!?). They seem to think schwarzbrot is basic German rye bread and the smoked chop was shoe leather. Even the mashed potatoes and gravy were horrible - flavorless instant potatoes and canned gravy. At least the beer was cold - the only thing I can recommend-- I went to eat elsewhere....

Roxanne C.

Yelp
Stopped by on a friday @ 2:30 ...The food tasted old and reheated. I'm giving one star for the red cabbage and one for the ambiance..other than that it was quite a disappointment! Service was uninterested

Yelp
On a recent work trip to Evansville I was told to try this place out. After about Fifteen minute drive from the hotel I arrived at a late 1800's hardware store repurposed into a restaurant. The place transports you back to an earlier, simpler time almost immediately. A vintage register greets you as soon as you enter, and you can immediately sense this building has been around a long time. There are 50 beers on tap, including several German varieties, and I tried the Octoberfest by Spaten. I asked the waitress, who was courteous and quick, what she recommended and she suggested I try one of the sampler options. I complied and was greeted about twelve minutes later with a massive and delicious combo. I highly recommend you try this place out next time you're in the area.

Yelp
Have heard about this place for several years. Was going this direction one weekend so we stopped. Very polite waiter who explained our food questions. Food came out quickly. Was hot and very appetizing!! We loved the German food! With this being a 2 hour drive, not sure when we would go back. Very satisfied and happy we stopped to eat here.

Yelp
Let's talk about the excellent here first. The atmosphere was very pleasant and seemed to transport you to an old German town. The Sauerbraten was excellent and the portion size perfect. The rye bread that accompanied the meal was excellent and I was a baker for several years. The Blueberry Cider I had from on tap was actually the best hard cider I have had. If I rated only on these items it would be 6 stars. When I entered the and was greeted it was not with a smile and genuine welcoming attitude. My server by the way was really great though. However this was their first opportunity to be friendly and welcoming and they missed it. On the food, the Spaetzle and mash potatoes both seemed to have been warmed over as sides. They were warm at best and it felt like they were from previous day. The taste was good for both but for the price of the meal I expect made to order or for current service period food. Fix those things and I would say your profits would soar.

Yelp
We have never ever had a bad experience at the Gerst Haus, and plan our road trips when we are in the area to include a stop for dinner if we are anywhere nearby. The draft beer list is amazingly large, featuring local and German style beers. Order yours in an iced goblet/fishbowl for the full impact. The menu is full of German classics, with an additional back page of "American" items. I love the pork schnitzel with red cabbage and hot potato salad; other family favorites are various sausages, spatzle, and goulash.
google avatar

Yelp
Really fun atmosphere. I'm glad I visited. Food was relatively expensive. I wouldn't bring a girl here unless I really liked her and was willing to spend more than $50

Yelp
It was a fairly quiet weeknight and I sat toward the end of the bar in front of a tv. The bartender was very helpful with the drinks and menu. They had quite a drink menu to start with so I opted for an Oktoberfest flight. For a started I got the sausage sampler. I liked 2 or the 3 sausages. For dinner the menu was huge with many great options so I decided to get a three meals with 2 sides: Goulash, Beef Stroganoff, & Smoked Pork Chop - 8 Oz. All the food was excellent. I personally enjoyed the pork chop and stroganoff the best. Good meal in a great traditional German restaurant.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant with an attentive staff that was friendly. The giant pretzel was delicious. I had the Friday special of catfish with fries and slaw. There was little if any salt used. My son got the bratwurst it was tough and lacked flavor. My mother got a sampler type meal and she complained as well about the lack of seasoning. If they could find their way to the seasonings cabinet it would have at least been eatable. I hope it was just an off day for the cooks.
google avatar

Marco A.

Yelp
Very authentic food! We had potato pancakes, and the pick three plate. Sauerbraten was perfect. Weinerschnitzel was great.
google avatar

Yelp
Busy night the weekend of the Eclipse. Front desk and servers were friendly, efficient and got our offer 100% correct, even with a special order. Lovely evening and great food. Started with giant pretzel table ordered, bratwurst dinner, bratwurst sandwich, Jager Schnitzel, Schweine Schnitzel and Baby back ribs. Great beer hall ambiance and lovely experience.

Yelp
I happened to be in the area and was really wanted to have a really good german meal. I had eaten here before and was very impressed tue first time. This time around was a major disappointment. I had orders the weiner schnitzel with spaetzle and red cabbage. What did I get I am not sure as the so called spaetzle didnt look like spaetzle, looked like raw doug amd also tasted like raw dough. Schnitzel was good but for the cost, it should have been bigger. Was so disappointed. My boyfriend got the smoked pork chop and he said it tasted like it was smoked yesterday and heated up today. Not good. Would not recommend if you are wanting german.

Yelp
We love non-chain places. We were in town for a convention of Jehovah's Witnesses and wanted some good German food. We are glad we found this little place! Our server, Hannah, was super friendly and attentive. The food was good too. I initially got the corned beef and cabbage. The corned beef was ok but the vegetables had no taste at all. Hannah was very quick to offer a replacement dish. The giant pretzel was delicious as was the Beef Stroganoff. We will definitely be back! My husband enjoyed a Gerst Beer. The decor was nice.... Made it feel a bit more authentic too!
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Ice cold beer - amazing draft selection. Appetizers like the ham rolls and sauerkraut balls were yummy! Schnitzel and warm potato salad can't be beat! Service was really good and attentive!

Yelp
We were so excited to find this place while passing through. They have an awesome atmosphere and we loved that you can sit at the bar side or regular dining. We started with a fishbowl beer. On Thursday they offer a "kill the keg" deal which gets a reduced price for the bigger beer. We had a local cream ale from Myriad Brewing. We chose the pig knuckle for an appetizer. It was delicious. It reminded me a bit of corned beef. I ordered the bratwurst platter with a side of white beans and red cabbage. I loved everything about my meal and the red cabbage was truly delicious. I could've eaten an entire plate of it. If you are in the area make sure to stop here and eat.

Dale G.

Yelp
normally this place is 4-5 stars but it was very off tonight. My mom's Corned beef and cabbage was supposed to be with potatoes and carrots. neither were there and when we asked they said they ran out? so we could have German potatoes or baked potatoes. Definitely wanted the German potatoes but all they did was cut up the backed potatoes and maybe fried with some onion? I dot the goulash over spaetzle but my spaetzle was clumped together. It was good tasting though. They served both with corn bread which was more like a pancake. Maybe that's done in parts of Germany?? Not sure I will go back.

Yelp
Went here on a business dinner/trip. Standard German fare, but with an American Sugary twist. Food was excellent. Rustic older building makes for a nice atmosphere. Server was amazing considering the 12 or so people in the group. Will certainly go here again on future trips.

Calvin P.

Yelp
Good beer good food. Staff efficient and helpful. I'd go back for the beer alone. We appreciate good service being in town for 4 weeks. Makes being out of town working tolerable. Thank you

Yelp
Below is the photo of my corned beef and cabbage dinner $16.99 yesterday at Gerst Haus. There was one carrot in 3 segments, what looked to be 1/4 head of a small cabbage with the leaves separated, an overabundance of vinegary pot liquor, and what was thin sliced obviously deli sliced corned beef, less than 3 oz. I thought there was a mistake, so the server spoke individually to the manager, then the general manager. Both told her the same thing, the portions are weighed out. The general manager did admit that there is "not much meat in the dish". Neither came to the table to speak to me. In the time of rising prices, skimpy portions are not the answer. I expected more than 3 ounces of unprocessed corned beef in this dish. What I really wanted was someone in management to come to the table, see the dish I received, and tell me exactly how much meat is on the schedule for this dish. Instead, management ignored my complaint and neither one came to the table. Very poor customer service. And definitely not worth $16.99.

Yelp
My buddy love German and he has helped me appreciate German food. It's something that we don't come across often but we found Gerst close to the disc golf course we played. First of all, parking is a little tough but we were able to park a block away on the street for free. The building is definitely one that has been there for a long time but the inside is nicely remodeled and feels like a pub. My buddy ordered the appetizer sampler that comes with a potato cake, kraut balls, fried oysters, and ham balls. The potato cake had a nice, fried texture to it and was seasoned well. The kraut balls were delicious with I believe a little bit of sausage and sauerkraut stuffed in them. They were like spicier hushpuppies and had a horseradish sour cream sauce to go with it. I didn't care for the ham balls which were mashed and grinded up ham fried. Fried oysters are not for me. I chose the Weiner Schnitzel as my entree since it was supposedly their famous one. Overall, it was all right. I wish it had been more tender and there was some kind of sauce to go with it than just the ketchup and German mustard on the table. I asked the waitress for help with the sides. She made an excellent recommendation with the hot German potato salad. It was half of a red potato soaked in vinegar with spices. I was surprised how tasty it was. The waitress struck out on the baked beans though. I would bet a lot of money on them being just Bush from the can. Sweet tea was surprisingly sweet and more importantly, freshly brewed. Some of the best I've had in Evansville. I would love to go back to Gerst to try some of the sausages on the menu and other sides. Overall, it was a good experience.

Yelp
This was our first visit to Gerst Haus. Came in for lunch. We received a luke warm greeting from a non- smiling " hostess" who was put out because we asked for a table instead of a booth. Not a great first impression at all. Our server, however, was friendly, very sweet and accommodating. We sampled several menu items. Everything we tasted was so so delicious!!!! The portions are nice size, so we could share our dishes. We left with happy tummies!!! Go and try some amazingGerman food!!!

Yelp
I was in Evansville for work and thought I'd pay Gerst Haus a visit for dinner. I ordered the Jagersnitzel, spatzel, and red cabbage. Food came out quickly and was absolutely delicious. The staff were cordial and welcoming, I'll come back if visiting the area!

Lisa V.

Yelp
Great food & atmosphere! The red cabbage is my favorite from Gerst. It's worth it to drive to the west side for this restaurant.

Pam P.

Yelp
Every few years I get to eat here while travelling. Always fantastic food, no matter what I order. Always friendly staff. Always want to come back!
google avatar

Yelp
Visiting from out of town to see Kenny Chesney in concert. We found Gerst Haus thanks to the rave reviews on Yelp. This place did not disappoint! We were seated right away in a booth near the bar. Our server was friendly and was very attentive. We opted only to have appetizers and Gerst on draft. The Highly recommend the Gerst & Sausage Samplers. We loved the atmosphere and authentic German cuisine.

Yelp
Stopped in here for lunch after just arriving in Evansville. Really cool restaurant. Service was good. Beer selection and prices were awesome. Food was just okay for me. Nothing real special to write about. German chocolate cake was best thing I ate.

Yelp
the service here was great & ambiance was cute & authentic. the highlight of the meal was the cheese dip for the large soft pretzel. the rest of the meal was mid. oddly sweet at times. probs wont go back but glad i got to try

Yelp
Food was excellent and the service was great. Enjoyed the building in all the pictures

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere. The food was so wonderful and authentic. Highly recommend the Beef Stroganoff, Goulash, and Wiener Schnitzel. I would definitely make another trip here in my next visit.

Levi H.

Yelp
Wasn't really anything to complain about, other than our server or waitress gal was probably hung up or indisposed of at the time thereafter my order was taken. But the gal that came with our drinks and the same gal that WASN'T our original waitress continued to do so for the remainder of the evening. SEHR GÜT. Food was good. would return in the near future. My last name is German and have never eaten at a said cultural establishment. Delightful. I implore others to try it if you're on the fence about it.

Yelp
Evansville what a great venue first the beer selection is amazing the atmosphere is just throw back to days gone by. Food wise let me say I am a fan of the brats and metts. The sides I could do with out to be honest. Appetizer platter the potato cakes oh my the ham balls are excellent the rest best left for others. Worth the stop worth the adventure but stick to the mett and brats the rest are just not worth the calories.

Robert B.

Yelp
Sunday 4:30 PM Food fantastic; presentation excellent; meal satisfying. Beer selection very good. Service professional; very helpful. Ambiance: family friendly & welcoming. Evansville is fortunate to have such a restaurant.
google avatar

Ashley D.

Yelp
Classic German food/decor. Really enjoyed my schnitzel and sides. It's like a German meat and three in a really cool historic city center of Evansville. Recommend checking this place out if you ever find your self in town!
google avatar

Kevin Y.

Yelp
Cool old building restored for restaurant. Very crowded on a Tuesday evening but got a seat quickly (large place). Went with traditional schnitzel and spaetzle which were very good. Tried cornbread cakes instead of rye bread and it was delicious. Service was no nonsense but efficient and polite. Will definitely be back when I'm in town!
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
One of the Evansville favorites. Great selection of German food, multiple beer varieties, and a nostalgic interior that takes you back to the early 1900's. It's a great place to hang out with friends and enjoy your favorite beverage.
google avatar

Randy R.

Yelp
We have never been to a German restaurant in our lives. But this was a great introduction to German food! The wait staff were REALLY helpful and knowledgeable about everything on the menu, and had awesome suggestions. The shop was a great way to finish the experience.
google avatar

Bill H.

Yelp
So the gerst house is sticking customers with their cost of doing business when they charge customers a fee for using their credit card to spend money and drink and dine there. Raise your prices if you need to but don't penalize customers for spending $ there. Unfortunately I think their customer base is too passive to say anything about this and accept the charge like sheep. Too bad
google avatar

Greg H.

Yelp
I had the weinersnitzel and it was perfect. I had to salt and pepper my German potatoes, but all in all I enjoyed my meal. One of my dinner companions got the sausage and was underwhelmed. The service was great, I would definitely go again.
google avatar

Chas I.

Yelp
Lovely place x and great food I would go back so many times x the atmosphere is also pretty cool x

Alisha R.

Yelp
I moved from Germany to the US 2 years ago and I really miss the comfort food I grew up with. I had really high hopes dining at Gersthaus but I have to be honest I was disappointed. It felt like the food was prepared without any knowledge of the german cuisine and without any research about traditional recipes. The food was for the partly edible but far away from being authentic. I had to pack my whole plate and recook it at home since I did not want my money to go to waste. The service was good and the ambiance resembled a classic rustic German restaurant but I would not come back for the food. You'd be better off looking up a recipe and cook it at home.

Brooke L.

Yelp
The food was great. Fried bologna was super good, as well as the pretzel! Service was wonderful too.

Yelp
Great German food restaurant set on the west side in what use to be an old hardware store. The food is fantastic and if you like Wiener schnitzel, German Fries, or Kraut balls look no further than this restaurant! Great atmosphere sphere and good food along with cold beer and adult beverages!
