16 NYC Bars & Restaurants With Live Music Outside

"If you often wake up on the UWS on Sundays, watch TV, and eat eggs that are slightly overcooked, you should change up your weekend routine with this all-day Australian cafe on 96th Street. Gertrude opened up at the end of summer 2020, and they’ve been hosting live music most weekend morning - with acts like a guitarist who worked on Cats the musical. It seems reasonable that the only way to improve banana bread and a cortado is by adding in some upright bass. You can stay up to date with their events on Instagram here." - hannah albertine

My friends and I walked here from nearby Central Park for a quick bite and coffee. We were lucky enough to go when there wasn't a line as this is a small place with no seating inside save for a small window seat that accommodates about three people if you squeeze together. Since there were four of us, one person had to stand while the others ate. I had an oak milk latte and the house-made bircher with oats, coconut milk, and fruit. I really liked both items and I'm glad that we were able to dine inside before the line formed and we couldn't sit down. This is a nice place for great coffee, but maybe just expect that you'll be taking your order to go if the seating is taken.

If you want a good cup of coffee on the upper west side try here! Ordered hot and iced latte with whole milk for the morning walk. Gertrude uses La marzocco espresso machine and has options for pastry as well. service was pleasant and welcoming. Coffee was nice. They have bit of seating area inside and sell bit of cute merchandise and nicely packaged coffee beans seems to be perfect for gifting so make sure to check those too.

Love the ambient of this cafe. I went to get cold brew here first thing on Saturday morning and it was the best decision! They carry various home-made pastries and breakfast menu. Although it is quite small, there are a couple of seats inside and a patio outdoor to just sip coffee and finish breakfast.

Discovered Gertrude on my recent trip to New York. What a gem of a place this is with amazing coffee options and lot of fresh breads and bakes to go with your morning cup of coffee. They've got quite the delectable menu 🤌🏼 Loved being here & trying the coffee at the Aussie Café in Upper West Side!

Google
I love their coffee.. can taste the profession! Although they didn’t make their own croissant but they added tahini to chocolate croissants and did a great job! It was a really delicious combination. Indoor space is tiny but outdoor available. Good place to go!

Google
Lovely place with outside seating (inside has maybe 3 spots to sit so bring a coat for outside). Delicious cake! Not my kind of coffee (too light and acidic) but the red cups are cute and the coffee cake made it totally worth it.

Google
Lovely little shop! To get in, you’ll want to go up the stairs and not down into the basement part (I was a little confused). But I like the elevation and looking down at people from the window. This is not a good cafe to study at though. It’s more of a 😎vibes✨🌧️ place. There is no wifi and only counter seating (but ample outlets if you need to charge your phone while looking out the window). The staff are super nice! I got a turmeric latte because this cafe has that “eclectic art kid kind of out there” energy. Beautiful latte and cute mug and they served it with a free hibiscus cookie!!! I’ve never had a turmeric latte before tho so I can’t judge how good it is but it tasted like spicy milk

Google
Great Coffee! Stumbled across this spot since its tucked away between a spa and barbershop, but seriously should have a line out the door. Very reasonable price, lower than the unnamed competitors which I love. The cardamon vanilla latte was amazing (kind of like a chai taste for my south asians). Everything else on the menu looked great, can’t wait to return and try more drinks! Bonus: Have a punch card rewards, 10th drink free!

Yelp
Stopped by Gertrude to show some support before their closing at the end of April. The space was tiny and not suitable for sitting down to enjoy your coffee, and there was an awkwardly silent environment. What was also a turn off were the police cracking down on people selling stuff and rowdy crowds loitering on W 96th. The barista, though, was quick with preparing drinks to-go and nice enough to mention that a cafe called Greenlane will re-open at this address and expand the seating situation. It's unfortunate that the coffee scene is lacking on the UWS. Espresso is standard. Oat milk is the only dairy alternative.

Yelp
RATING: 8.3/10 ORANGE BASIL LATTE - SEASONAL Came here on my way to Mamma's Too for some coffee and saw the good reviews. The espresso here is actually quite tasty, and they had a fun seasonal latte utilizing orange and basil. I will say I did get orange notes but not so much basil; perhaps it's because I got the drink iced? Regardless, nice and fruity/sweet with that above average quality espresso - I was satisfied. Not too many places to sit, not sure about their wifi situation, and I don't think they have a bathroom. They do have a little bit of outdoor seating though. Some pastry options are available too, and the service was great - the cashier was super nice. If I'm in the area, I would def come back. FINAL CATEGORY: GOOD (terrible / bad / ok / GOOD / great / excellent)

Yelp
Super cute cafe located on the UWS. Sweet latte, quite milky. Very tiny store, but they have a good selection of coffee drinks and pastries.

Yelp
I got the cold brew ($4.50 + tax). It was so basic and regular. Seating is very small which consists of a few mini tables and an outside parklet. There is nothing wrong with their drinks, but I am confused what makes them stand out compared to the 100's of other coffee stores in NYC. Workers are friendly!

Yelp
visited one monday morning, and it lifted my spirits. 2min wait. efficient and kind service. turmeric latte didn't knock my socks off, but it was darn good. might try another kinda latte next onion jalapeno cheddar croissant $7 was so delicious, just be mindful of a 5-7min prep to toast. might try replicate it myself. such a flaky croissaint and savory yet barely spicy onion-jalapeno cheddar concoction. price point was a tad steep but not unexpected. seating available for 3. very solid.

Yelp
So delicious! I ordered a cappuccino and an almond croissant, and wow, one of the best almond croissants I've had. The service was quick and there was outdoor seating available. It is a super cute neighborhood cafe, across from a lovely church which is nice to view while enjoying some treats. Looking forward to coming back :)

Yelp
Amazing and cute cafe on the upper west side! I had the turmeric milk with oat milk and half of the breakfast sandwich. The turmeric milk was spicy and so frothy and delicious. The breakfast sandwich didn't have toasted bread but it was still super good. Would totally go again. The people were also really nice.

Yelp
A quaint neighborhood cafe in the Upper West Side. The inside is very small and there are a couple of tables out front. Fun drink selection alongside their classics. Their unique selections are of the cold and refreshing varietal and a fresh way to change up a typical coffee menu. On that note, I had the "Chinotto Cold Brew Tonic" ($5) which was like a clove heavy concoction with a hint of cinnamon and zest interlaced with the soft robustness from the cold brew. I was surprised this came in a small 8oz plastic cup, however. A refreshing and inventive drink but an expensive one! It is a lovely cafe nonetheless, one perfect to sit at and lazily watch the afternoon pass you by.

Yelp
just moved into the neighborhood and I really really love gertrude -- I already know I'll be a regular here. I had their inaugural spring/summer latte this year, a honey lemongrass iced latte, and it was seriously one of the best lattes I've ever had. such a unique, fresh, and light flavor, I've never really seen lemongrass attempted in a latte elsewhere. I've had their breakfast sandwich, which is also unique and delicious with pickled veg (but probably would've been better toasted) and the vegemite cheddar scone, which was so yummy without being overpowering with the vegemite. the staff has always been so kind every time I'm there. amazing neighborhood coffeeshop. I want to try so much more of their menu, especially their baked goods. they also have live music on the weekends! only milk substitute is oat milk, I do wish they had almond. a little pricey, but it's New York. not a great place to get work done, as the store is really small and there is limited table space, but good for grab and go or a hangout.

Yelp
I came to Gertrude with some friends that were visiting from Australia and we were able to snag a table outside. The cafe is very small, with a few seats inside and additional seating outside. They have a decent sized menu of food and drink options to choose from and everything we ordered was great. The individuals working were really lovely and I would definitely come here again.

Yelp
Great coffee in a beautiful place ... you gotta see it for yourself! If coffee had a heaven it would be Gertrude!
google avatar

Lei Z.

Yelp
Was on the UWS today and wanted to check out some local businesses while I was there. I had an amazing seasonal latte cookie dough coconut latte - tasted exactly like the description, and it wasn't too sweet either. My latte had seasoning and even shredded coconut in it! Would absolutely come here again for coffee when I'm in the area.
google avatar

Gabi H.

Yelp
The barista was really nice and helpful. My almond croissant didn't really taste like a croissant, it tasted more like an almond cake? Not exactly in a bad way, I just wanted more flakes. I got the leftover seasonal latte, maple sage. It's super tasty! The new one is spiced vanilla, which I'm sure is just as good.

Celia R.

Yelp
gertrude.. what's going on? I had such high expectations for this place: modern, hip, tahini in the cookies. All the markings of a great cup of coffee. Alas, she did not live up to her decor. My $7 decafe latte (with tax and tip) was, well, bland? I think the Pret espresso machine might have more flavor. I don't know if the beans were old or just not flavorful to begin with but for a coffee shop that appears so attentive to detail, I was shocked by the neglect of the taste of the espresso. Your patrons deserve better!

Yelp
Took a walk this morning so we could try out this great new coffee spot! Interior looks super cute and cozy, and I hope to be able to spend time there in the future. For now they're doing a great job accommodating health and safety concerns by having you order at the doorway and having staff bring your order out to you when it's ready. I got a cold brew with oat milk that hit the spot, and we were surprised to get a few oat biscuits with our order -- so delicious! Excited to come back again soon and try some other items on the menu. Very glad to have Gertrude in the area!
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
Not sure why this place is rated so highly. No straws, no milk options, no bathroom. No thanks.
google avatar

C A.

Yelp
I got an iced coffee with oat milk. It was 6$ with tip (thanks to those greedy little iPads) but not at all worth the price. Watery, not enough milk, and the cup is spilling everywhere through the rim. Maybe if I hated someone I'd recommend going here. Otherwise, give your money to a local bodega--it's not like you'll get seating here anyways

Russell F.

Yelp
Coffee great. Sandwich cold and terrible flavor. Cheese not melted and egg cold and was $14. Too bad, not many good breakfast options on UWS.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
I wanted to like gertrude so much more than I do. I've been a few times and every time, something is a little off. The cold brew is fine (but not the best in the neighborhood). I was annoyed that the egg sandwich had mayo on it, which wasn't included on the list of ingredients. Had it been named, I would have ordered something else.

Yelp
Stopped by gertrude to get a warm drink after walking through the UWS from Times Square. It was the afternoon, so I didn't want to get coffee - can't make the jet lag any worse - so I opted for the turmeric milk. I was happy to hear that they were able to make it with oat milk. It was absolutely delicious! My partner said it was "very strong", but I thought it was perfect - why have turmeric milk if you can't taste the turmeric? I absolutely loved the earthiness and the pepperiness of the drink. It was mildly sweetened as well, which was a pleasant surprise. We didn't want to get caught out too late, but the interior was very cute - banquette seating with a little shelf library where you can take or leave books. If I lived in the area and it were pre-covid, I would certainly drop by and chill. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Mahsa N.

Yelp
It's always great to find nice neighborhood coffee locations. I think I've found mine in the UWS. It's definitely on the more expensive side compared to other places in the neighborhood but we'll worth it. I got the raw brownie and coffee. The raw brownie was absolutely rich and delicious! The coffee was also high quality and perfectly brewed. I'm excited to come back and try their lattes!
google avatar

Arpit D.

Yelp
Very nice and new cafe in UWS. They have fun drinks like lemongrass soda. A short walk from Hudson River park. One of the best cafes in the area! - ladidacoffee

Yelp
I Highly suggest checking out Gertrude on the weekend and catch the morning jazz. The coffee, pastry, jazz and nyc combo is majestic. Every pastry I have had here is delicious. The cappuccino especially hits the spot on a Saturday morning.
google avatar

Charisma H.

Yelp
Fun and inventive seasonal lattes, but they only have whole milk and one milk alternative as options (don't remember which one bc I normally get skim). For a premium priced caffeine fix (even compared to other neighborhood spots), you gotta have all the milk options. At the very least more than two
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try Gertrude for quite some time. The shop itself is small but cute and the workers were nice. We ordered a chai latte and chocolate croissant. The chai was watered down and the spices were a bit off and the chocolate croissant was stale- it didn't flake at all.
google avatar

Jerry S.

Yelp
No frills good coffee. Staff is amazingly friendly. The coffee tastes very good and gives you an amazing feeling when you drink it. My personal favorite is the Seasonal Latte.

Gail E.

Yelp
The coffee is excellent. And, the almond croissants are as good. This is a wonderful addition to the area.

Keanu W.

Yelp
Very good drip coffee! Good beans for sale as well. It's cramped inside, but this is a good place to get a coffee while on a long walk.
google avatar

Janet K.

Yelp
The cutest coffee shop in the area! So glad I decided to stop by while I was in the area. Super friendly and very cute vibes. hubs loved his americano. I usually don't like just black coffee but I actually loved it too, very roasty flavors that reminded me of korean barley tea, but super smooth and no bitterness at all. i also enjoyed the rose cardamom latte i got but i am already planning to go back to try more of their drinks! the bread pudding was great too.

Yelp
I lived on Amsterdam between 95th and 96th for 6 years. The whole time I was there I was trying to find a coffee shop that could be my local spot, but after heading to a number of places in the area, I never found one. The day I packed up the car to move upstate, my boyfriend and I wandered around the corner to find a quick breakfast, and were shocked to see a new coffee shop had popped up. It was Gertrude. The outside is unassuming, but cute. Inside, we were greeted by very sweet staff - including a woman (the owner I believe) from Melbourne. It just so happens that my boyfriend is from Melbourne and he is always raving about Australian coffee shops - now that I have been to Gertrude, I understand why. At Gertrude everything is done with such care. I got a dirty chai and it was delish! The chai is made there and it has bunch of spices including some star anise and clove that give it a little zing that the typical cardamom, cinnamon, ginger don't. My bf got his typical latte and drank it swaying side-to-side like he was in a trance. I also got the porridge - why has no one else mentioned this in other reviews??!! It is sublime! It is also made in-house and is a mix of quinoa, buckwheat, and I believe she said - oats, in coconut milk, and topped with a bunch of unbelievable granola. It was the perfect mix of creamy, crunchy, gluten free, warm, and filling - perfect for a cold day. Since going for the first time, every time I am in the city I find a reason to come back. I have given multiple friends gift cards to Gertrude because I think it is so fantastic that everyone needs to give it a go.

Yelp
I just discovered this cute coffee shop today. The coffee is excellent and the choc chip cookie is to die for. There was a jazz duo playing outside - apparently they play on Sunday mornings from 11 til noon, if I remember correctly.

Erica G.

Yelp
The girl taking orders is super sweet and very nice to talk to! The iced lattes here are always delicious too. A gem on the Upper West Side!

Mackenzie F.

Yelp
Gertrude's has spoiled me. They have the best coffee. My own brews at home just can't compete. My regular order is a cold brew with a little oat milk. I have also purchased their bags of coffee as gifts (pricey!! but very good). My son likes their "fancy lemonade". The baristas are always friendly and low-key. The space is adorable. They had a book exchange for a while, which was a cute idea. Not sure if it got much traction. They also had a giving tree during the holidays. All just adds to their vibe--friendly, low-key, good at what they do, and rooted in the community. If they ever close down, I don't know what I'd do!!

B C.

Yelp
Excellent flat white! Charming atmosphere in a compact setting. Love that they have live music occasionally
google avatar

Jessica K.

Yelp
I really liked my flat white from here but the chocolate croissant I got was awful. Was really really stale and soggy- absolutely no way they were fresh that day. I ended up just taking out the sticks of chocolate and tossing the actual pastry. Will be back for more coffee but skip the croissants.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
An Australian owned place - a way to an Aussie New Yorker's heart. Named after Gertrude St in Melbourne. This place is super cute! 1 customer is only allowed in at a time for social distancing. We met the lovely owner while they had some violinists play one Sunday and some carolers another. We had the Sweet Potato loaf and Breakfast Muffin in the outdoor seating. Also a Baby-chino for our toddler. Cute space!
google avatar

Ticha U.

Yelp
Love the ambient of this cafe. I went to get cold brew here first thing on Saturday morning and it was the best decision! They carry various home-made pastries and breakfast menu. Although it is quite small, there are a couple of seats inside and a patio outdoor to just sip coffee and finish breakfast.
google avatar

Meg D.

Yelp
Yay! A new place on the UWS to try out! I really wanted to love it since the owner was so friendly and we need new locally owned spots. I am happy to report that they have excellent lattes and home made breads--savory zucchini and sweet banana were incredibly moist and full of flavor. Stylish, downtown feel without being too trendy for its own good. Give it a try! You'll love it!
google avatar

Elias S.

Yelp
Adorable cafe, friendly staff, and an AMAZING iced orange blossom mocha!!! I could drink that every day (highly recommend)!!!
google avatar

Mia B.

Yelp
I've only been here twice so far and it's my new favorite place. It's a small cafe with a menu that is big on taste. The quality stands head and shoulders above other coffee shops. There are two bistro tables inside and several more outside on the street. What drew me to first try Gertrude was their flat white coffee. I've also enjoyed their breakfast sandwich and brekkie muffin (like egg bites but tastier). The geranium rose lemonade was delicious on one of the hottest days of the summer. They mix that to order either with or without sparkling water. While some of the pastries are delivered, they make much of the food in-house, which always scores points in my book.
google avatar

Webb S.

Yelp
Gertrude is our go-to cafe near Broadway - small, good coffee and food and nice music to boot!
google avatar

Regina M.

Yelp
They increased their prices without updating the price list or the consumer. They also had no straws and made me buy a metal straw for my iced coffee making my small iced coffee $8.50 in total.
google avatar

Kirby S.

Yelp
Delicious coffee and pastries in a fun little location. I loved the calming live music they had the day we went there too. It was such a perfect start to our morning.
google avatar

Alexia J.

Yelp
Gertrude is my favorite coffee shop in NYC by far. This cute little shop takes coffee seriously. For instance, they always have a seasonal latte that sounds like a work of art. This time the seasonal latte was housemate pecan milk with a salted caramel syrup! With the $8? Definitely.
google avatar

Eddie M.

Yelp
Great new coffee spot in the neighborhood. The pastries were tasty and the coffee was strong and of obvious quality. I think I remember there was some more involved food options but I did not get a chance to try them. Next time, though, for sure since I will absolutely be returning.
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
I don't review often... but I wanted to say this place is phenomenal. I am staying UWS and I have been looking for just a really good place for coffee. This place is a gem. I highly recommend you visit here at the earliest opportunity.
google avatar

Bianca W.

Yelp
Coffee was good and they had some interesting flavors/spices, a little expensive but if you sit outside in there nice area it could potentially be worth it. As a young adult I think two lattes for 19.65 is a little much but still good. The baristas weren't masked though.
google avatar

Tom F.

Yelp
The popular thing I've been seeing online is the maple sage latte, and with the charming exterior and the helpful staff, I decided to give it a try. The latte was sweet, and the hint of sage along with the maple flavoring gave it a robust taste. My only qualm would be for it to be in a larger cup, mainly based on the price. Tasty, and certainly worth it for a treat, but not sustainable as a frequent purchase (unless it is, you do you) Looking forward to trying its food offerings the next time!
