San Francisco's historic Ghirardelli Square, originally the site of the 1895 Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory and previously a woolen mill, now houses an elegant collection of shops, restaurants, and a luxurious hotel. Known as the first successful adaptive reuse project in the U.S., it's one of the city's most charming places to stroll, shop, and enjoy the ambiance.
Wander through winding passageways and across plazas to explore unique boutiques and shops. Discover luxurious bath and body products at elizabethW, and browse for special gifts at Gigi Rose, Jackson & Polk, Mashka, and Lola.
After shopping, relax with views of the bay at one of Ghirardelli Square's inviting restaurants. The Cheese School of San Francisco features a wine and cheese bar, café, and cheese shop (with cheese classes, naturally); for a unique gift, grab one of their premium wine and cheese gift baskets. For a more formal meal, try McCormick & Kuleto's Seafood & Steaks, where you can take in views of San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz, Angel Island, and the marina. If you're in the mood for pub fare and beer, San Francisco Brewing Co. offers an onsite brewery and an outdoor beer garden.
If you're visiting with kids, the original Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Shop is a must. The line may be long, but it moves quickly, and soon you'll be choosing from an impressive selection of sundaes. Try the family-size "Earthquake," with eight scoops, eight toppings, bananas, whipped cream, almonds, chocolate chips, and cherries, or opt for the "Gold Rush," vanilla ice cream with hot fudge and peanut butter.
After enjoying a treat, play a round at Subpar Miniature Golf, where each hole is a miniature San Francisco landmark. Be sure to check the events schedule before your visit, as Ghirardelli Square often hosts family-friendly activities.
