This hotel was a great choice…for us, but I imagine not for everybody.| We were two weeks into a bus trip through Peru, and picked this hotel specifically because it was a bit out of town, and it proved to be perfect for us. After spending a lot of time in various cities, it was time for a break from the dusty chaos that can be the nature of Peruvian urban landscapes.|This hotel is a couple of klms out of town, across a causeway, on a small island. To be honest, if you go to the lookout above Puño, you will wonder how the hell it was ever built…it is not pretty, and frankly, shouldn’t be there….however, it is there, and that can’t easily be undone.|Once there, we got an early eighties Sheraton vibe. The vast lobby stretched into a seating area, and a bar, with the restaurant up a few stairs. The hotel is surrounded by gardens, and a nature trail, and all rooms look out to Lake Titicaca, or back to the city of Puño, which at nighttime looks spectacularly sparkly…not so much in the day.|The hotel makes the most of the views with huge glass panels everywhere. We particularly enjoyed the bar, where Paul, and Marrelo took great care of us as we passed the evening in front of the fire…nice and cosy. They made sure we never had to wait long for a refill, and were consummate professionals.|The restaurant is definitely old school elegance..the portions are HUGE and we over ordered at first. Service was great and the view across the lake to the reed island was spectacular. We had a great view of the birdlife as well..an owl, an eagle, and some small but beautiful black and yellow birds put on a show for us..wonderful. There is also a small herd of Alpacas, and a large population of wild guinea pigs….you can tell they are wild because they are a nondescript grayish brown color…and guinea pig was not on the menu.|Our room was old, but just fine, with a breathtaking view across to the islands. Privacy was such that we left the curtains open at night, and were woken by the most amazing sunrise. Amenities were great, and there was a kettle in the room ( not common in Peru). The bed was huge and very comfortable. The bathroom was dated but functioned as it should and was clean.|Lake Titicaca is at a pretty high altitude, and I suffered a bit…even turning over in bed left me breathless. Some Diamox from my doctor worked well, and whilst I was still getting breathless when moving, all other symptoms disappeared by morning, and I was able to function.|Once at the hotel, because of its location, we stayed there, ate all our meals there, and left only for a tour of Uros reed islands. This might not suit everyone, but it was exactly what we wanted and needed, even if we hadn’t realized so.|I wholeheartedly recommend this hotel as a great retreat for a few days.
