GHL Lago Titicaca | Best places to stay in Lake Titicaca

"This long, bone-white concrete sliver set on a peninsula overlooking Lake Titicaca, is walled almost entirely with glass. Rooms are not all equal; some are in need of an upgrade. All are simply fitted out in white, dark wood and teal fitted carpets. The best face east, away from Puno and have wall-high glass for spectacular dawn-over-the-water views. Stays here are all about the views – of wetlands filled with waterbirds extending into the Uros reed archipelago, the lake itself and distant mountains. There are viewpoints everywhere – the cocktail bar is the place for sunsets, the restaurant for golden dawns. It’s also an immersion in nature. The lake laps at your feet, the skies are immense, sunrises and sunsets are magnificent, and the stars at night in the high-altitude air, overwhelming. " - Alex Robinson

GHL Hotel is a building that would have fascinated Le Corbusier. (I was told that it used to be a prison - not so sure about that.) But don't let the outside fool you. This is a lovely hotel inside. The rooms are comfortable, and their location on a peninsula assures that you will have a nice view of the sunrise in the morning. The service is exceptional. There is a good restaurant (reviewed separately) and bar on the premises. The friendly travel agent in the lobby can assist with arranging lake excursions or airport transportation. I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel and will not hesitate to stay here next time I visit Puno.

This hotel was a great choice…for us, but I imagine not for everybody.| We were two weeks into a bus trip through Peru, and picked this hotel specifically because it was a bit out of town, and it proved to be perfect for us. After spending a lot of time in various cities, it was time for a break from the dusty chaos that can be the nature of Peruvian urban landscapes.|This hotel is a couple of klms out of town, across a causeway, on a small island. To be honest, if you go to the lookout above Puño, you will wonder how the hell it was ever built…it is not pretty, and frankly, shouldn’t be there….however, it is there, and that can’t easily be undone.|Once there, we got an early eighties Sheraton vibe. The vast lobby stretched into a seating area, and a bar, with the restaurant up a few stairs. The hotel is surrounded by gardens, and a nature trail, and all rooms look out to Lake Titicaca, or back to the city of Puño, which at nighttime looks spectacularly sparkly…not so much in the day.|The hotel makes the most of the views with huge glass panels everywhere. We particularly enjoyed the bar, where Paul, and Marrelo took great care of us as we passed the evening in front of the fire…nice and cosy. They made sure we never had to wait long for a refill, and were consummate professionals.|The restaurant is definitely old school elegance..the portions are HUGE and we over ordered at first. Service was great and the view across the lake to the reed island was spectacular. We had a great view of the birdlife as well..an owl, an eagle, and some small but beautiful black and yellow birds put on a show for us..wonderful. There is also a small herd of Alpacas, and a large population of wild guinea pigs….you can tell they are wild because they are a nondescript grayish brown color…and guinea pig was not on the menu.|Our room was old, but just fine, with a breathtaking view across to the islands. Privacy was such that we left the curtains open at night, and were woken by the most amazing sunrise. Amenities were great, and there was a kettle in the room ( not common in Peru). The bed was huge and very comfortable. The bathroom was dated but functioned as it should and was clean.|Lake Titicaca is at a pretty high altitude, and I suffered a bit…even turning over in bed left me breathless. Some Diamox from my doctor worked well, and whilst I was still getting breathless when moving, all other symptoms disappeared by morning, and I was able to function.|Once at the hotel, because of its location, we stayed there, ate all our meals there, and left only for a tour of Uros reed islands. This might not suit everyone, but it was exactly what we wanted and needed, even if we hadn’t realized so.|I wholeheartedly recommend this hotel as a great retreat for a few days.

This hotel has an amazing location. Every room has a lake view either sunrise side or sunset side. Probably built in the 70s so not super modern but rooms are clean and have everything with huge panoramic windows to see the sunrise or sunset which is spectacular. Breakfast is very good. Service is very friendly.

Just checked in and went to the restaurant to get a lite bite. I enjoyed a salad and a glass of regional white wine that was wonderful! The service was very attentive and even though I ordered a glass of wine and they allowed me to taste before committing. I will be back tomorrow after touring for dinner again.

This is an outstanding hotel with great views of the lake. As we stumble in from days full of sight-seeing, we often resort to dining at this hotel's restaurant for convenience but soon discover that the staff and the food make it a worthwhile visit. Eduardo, our server was attentive and helpful. He speaks fluent English too and this is helpful. This hotel offers spacious accommodation for a third person in the room; we didn't need it but I'm sure it might be a plus for someone else

I don't believe there is a better hotel in Puno. On a small island with a nature reserve circling the building and whole island, it is all very beautiful. The wildlife is right at your door including all type of birds, little gopher looking creatures, even a herd of alpacas came right up to me. The restaurant was upscale and the meals delicious. I had a perfectly cooked alpaca steak with andean soup. YUM! The bar has outdoor seating and a path to a viewpoint garden with a nearly 360 degree view. The rooms are adequately sized and modern. The sunrise view room over the lake I had was fantastic. The beds were acceptable quality but know I am a bed snob. So for me, it was fine but for most people it is probably nice. The only downside, for some people, not me, was the hotel is not walkable to other things in Puno. So have a car or take taxis like I did for about 20 sols. If you visited Puno and didn't stay here, I'm sorry for you.
