OC’s 18 Best Bakeries for Bread, Pastries, and More | Eater LA

"OC native chef Danielle Kuhn bakes her own sourdough at her Dana Point restaurant and bakery. The ovens are the heart of this operation, where the team serves kouign-amann and iced morning buns, plus seemingly simple toasts topped with ricotta, parmesan, wild mushrooms, and kale. Housemade bread with salted butter, buttermilk biscuits with honey, or house focaccia are always a good idea for starters." - Jenn Tanaka

Google
Great meal. Christiana was friendly, attentive and had great suggestions. The steak and eggs was good… the steak had a slight gamey taste (kinda like lamb) but the flavor and tenderness were solid. The mushroom toast dish was amazing. Pizza was solid. French toast was just ok. Overall good experience.

Google
Delicious menu with organic and farm fresh offerings. Then there are the pastries, on yet another level, with unique combinations of flavors as well as the traditional, nothing is average here. Shown: the scramble, chocolate croissant, espresso Bundt, and Orange swirl something or other but scrumptious!! Forgot to mention another highlight: house-made hot sauce. On the mild side but perfectly melded flavors, color and texture. Yummmm!

Google
one of the best places I've ever had the experience excellent customer service excellent food excellent everything environment etc. their food is amazing they make their own pasta right at the restaurant, is the best cinnamon latte you will ever have. highly recommend. they also make their own pasta from scratch

My husband and I dined in for dinner while visiting the area. The atmosphere is casual but elevated and the service is very warm and friendly. The food was truly outstanding! Note that the portions are sharing size for both sides, salads, and entrees. An absolute delightful dining experience!

Google
Dropped in randomly and we were pleasantly surprised, every item was fresh you could taste, sauce in cavatelli dish was superb, the salsiccia pizza was really yummy and the avocado toast was solid, will definitely come back again

I have to come back to try the dinner service at Giana's! I stopped in on my morning walk to grab a danish and was so surprised by the lovely vibes and decor inside. The staff was lovely and the danish was so so so delicious! I can't wait to go back and try more!

Google
This was one of the best Italian experiences I've ever had! The food was delicious, and was fresh and hot. We had special requests and a little trouble, but the staff was very helpful and we figured it recommend. While quite pricey, was very wonderful. Very recommended: risotto al pomodoro with steak. Highly recomend.

Google
We visited for breakfast and found a charming restaurant with a diverse menu catering to different tastes. Both the food and service were excellent, and the staff were very friendly. One suggestion for improvement would be to include pictures of the dishes on the menu, as we weren't familiar with some items and had to Google them. We ordered the egg pomodoro and the salsiccia pizza, and both the prices and portions were great.

Yelp
Thank you, Giana, for exceeding my food quality expectations after hearing how great this place is! Had the Meatballs, Brussels salad, Pollo pizza. All were delicious and I will definitely order them again. Service was stellar, too, shout out to Liz for being so nice and attentive!
google avatar

Anahi A.

Yelp
The food tasted genuinely authentic. They have a great wine selection too, which pairs perfectly with their delicious dishes. They also have a deli inside which we are curious to go back and try. The service was great and our waitress was really nice. The ambiance is really nice, which made it a great spot to relax and enjoy a meal with my husband. We're definitely going back soon to try more of what they offer. If you love Italian food you've got to check out this place, I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
My family and I went to Giana again last night. My child and I both had the lamb oso buco special. WOW! Everyone that tried it agreed it was the best dish we've had for years. I hope this winds up on Giana's regular menu. (Obviously dependent on lamb availability.) If you're lucky enough to find it, try it!

Yelp
Outstanding food, service and atmosphere produce the perfect five star experience at Giana Bakery and Provisions. Despite the name, we did not sample the barked goods, focusing more on dinner entrees. The Short Rib Rigatoni was a highlight, rich and tasty. Cavatelli, house-made sausage pasta, was also outstanding though I found the sausage a little on the subtle side. Gamberetto, the tiger shrimp pasta, had a delightful wine sauce. I also ordered a Cinnamon Latte that was nicely balanced. We walked up to find the evening gridlocked with reservations. We placed our names on a wait list, but were accommodated by a cancellation. We had a party of five and were placed at a four top which was a little cramped, but we were grateful not to have to wait as long. Our server was knowledgeable and prompt. Overall the experience was very good. Be prepared for entrees ranging up to $35.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible! A friend took me here today around noon & it was so good We both got the Avocado Toast, I added 1 scrambled egg to mine! So delicious. Everything on the menu looked incredible! I also got a vanilla latte with oatmilk that was divine! And we stopped by their pastry counter and grabbed several to go! Service was excellent and well behaved dogs are allowed inside- which is amazing! Can't wait to eat here again

Yelp
Great spot! Food is AMAZING! Staff is always pleasant and it gives you a local spot vibe. We're repeat offenders :)

Yelp
I love Giana's! Chef Danielle and her team are wonderful! My pup and I would go in a couple days a week for coffee, pastries and breakfast over the last Yeats. We unfortunately moved this summer, but I look forward to visiting and getting a good latte and morning bun! My pup Rylie also loves to go!

Yelp
Bruxxeles w steak - HUGE. Seriously this is at least 3 meals in one! Ordered the steak medium-rare and half of it was utterly perfectly cooked, the other half a little overcooked. It went great with the salad. Cavatelli - light tomato-y cream sauce with nice house made sausage. Well cooked pasta. Could have used a spoon for all the love sauce! Salsiccia pizza - so good. Good flavors, very generous with the sausage, nice light thin crust. Chop salad - nice and light, also big! Very fresh ingredients and good dressing. Would come back to try other things. The Fungi risotto looks particularly good and was recommended by our waiter! This location is nice, they have a lot in the back, and lots of seating inside and a covered patio outside. Very friendly and helpful staff!

Yelp
Great customer service at the walk up bakery. I paid $24 for a giant sandwich, 4 cookies and cinnamon roll. The restaurant has nice seating and relaxed ambiance.

Yelp
We came for a weekday brunch, everything was amazing! We tried to spinach and sausage pizza that was truly beautiful. Also a type of bucatini pasta that had garlic and an egg, everybody's breakfast should be good! The scramble with the sausage and spinach was so beautiful we almost didn't want to ruin it by eating it. The best part was our server, her name is Regan - she's amazing, a ray of sunshine!
google avatar

Yelp
OMG! This place is sooooo good! Pastries are delicious! Pasta is flavorful and cooked to perfection. Coffees are delightful. Staff is friendly! Must try if you are ever in the area. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Several winners on the menu. Meatballs - so tender and the sauce is soft and well balanced. One order comes w three meatballs and several slices of bread for dipping into the marinara. Pizettes - pollo and alla are amazing and the portion is large enough for two to share. Chopped salad is good but the last two times the dressing hasn't been balanced and felt more oily than balanced with vinegar. Lattes here are incredible. I highly recommend the lavender cinnamon syrup.
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
This review is literally only for their pies, but their apple and blueberry pies are crumbly and delicious, and can easily feed a crowd! Can't wait to come here and try their other items too.

Yelp
Amazing place!!! Delicious food, great atmosphere and very friendly staff. Handmade pasta and freshly baked pastry.

Yelp
I come to Giana's each and every time I am in this area... and I live 250 miles away in the Central Valley. On October 17th, I hosted a family dinner for 13 at Giana's. I made reservations probably a month or so ahead of time with the owner. This was a "pre wedding" immediate family gathering so that all could get to know the pastor etc, prior to the day of the event. Giana's was the perfect spot for this dinner. The service was great, the food was great We ordered appetizers, chopped salads family style, and then everyone ordered their own entrees. You have to have the pastas at Giana's.... they are all sooo good!!! The wine choice was great for the wine drinkers. The coffee with the Budino was perfect!!! The Budino for dessert.... what a way to top off a dinner... Giana's continues to be my favorite place in Dana Point... and I will continue to return each time I am in this area visiting my son and daughter in law. You really cannot go wrong whether you are there for brunch, lunch, or dinner. I have yet to have something I haven't loved!!! I love to start with the House made bread, the biscuit, and the chopped salad.... all so easy to share... entrees that we love.... Cavarelli, the RISOTTO (YUM!!!)..., Aglio, Mushroom pizza, Bolognese Enjoy your visit to Giana's, if it is a nice day, enjoy time on the patio... so relaxing...

Yelp
First Time Here - Bakery Visit I ordered a coffee with a few pastries and loaf of bread. There was a good selection of both savory and sweet. My only constructive criticism is that the bakery counter/service would be encouraged to have personality and a higher energy level. The bakery counter should be someone with a "happy to see you" attitude. After spending over $25, I felt like the service was lackluster and it annoyed me enough to want to pass the next time I'm in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Elisa G.

Yelp
I have walked and driven by her so many times and finally stopped in to pick something up for dinner. I ordered a salad with shrimp on the side and swordfish (1 star off for smelling pungently fishy) as an entrée. I will take pictures later. This is so much better than having food delivered and the staff is super nice!!

Yelp
Morning Joe! Stopped into Giana's Bakery for the first time this morning. Located in the revived area of the latern district area on PCH. It is easy to find and parking was easily available at 8:00am. Stepped up through a short line and ordered a pastry item and an Americano coffee. These were served up quickly and the pastry was warm and the coffee hot - just the way you want, but don't always get... The staff was friendly and shared the guest wifi password. It was mostly quiet at 8:00, but I stayed until nearly 9:00 and traffic picked up over time. All-in-all great food, reasonably priced and served in a friendly and inviting environment.

Yelp
Ongoing delightful meals at this Dana Point gem. Vibe, food and service is A+ They do not disappoint!

Yelp
Food - Good Italian food I must say! Got started with what I consider a great meatball appetizer or as they call it Polpetta. 3 pieces of some lovely meatballs, awesome marinara sauce and some bread on the side. Check the pictures. Twas devine!!! Then had my waiter choose my dinner between a flat iron streak or Salsiccia pizza and he chose the pizza for me. Gosh that was the right decision as I enjoyed it immensely. Wifey had the Cavatelli dish with sausage. That was good as well! To round it out, we ordered some coffee and a heaven on earth tiramisu. I tend not to like tiramisu in general, but oh boy, i completely loved this one! Not overbearing when it comes to cocoa powder at all. Just spectacular!! Service - wouldn't be a good review if I didn't mention our waitstaff Finn. He was great! Ambiance - for me, this is the magic of this place. Not over the top fancy. It's a cozy vibe, one that feels watered down Just right. Almost like that comfy jeans you are wearing kinda comfy to it. Verdict - either I was overly happy and hungry or this place did it for me. Either way, I invite you to visit this place!! Just a chill place. Nothing fancy schmanzy, just good bare knuckles Italian joint.
google avatar

Vicki L.

Yelp
Incredible food. All of the veggie sides rocked - get the carrots. I'm obsessed with the pasta with beans. Excellent house wines. Fun vibe. Friendly staff, but we were neglected frequently by our main server. Update: went back in the morning for baked goods. Excellent service. The chocolate chip cookie is off the charts! Huge tasty biscuits. Wonderful variety.

Matt H.

Yelp
Ordered the Margarita Pizza asked for well done...could have been left in the oven a little longer. Pizza has a flop to it when picked up. They could cut back on the basil a little bit & for $18.00...the pie could be a little bigger. As far as taste goes...very good flavor. Would I order this again, no. There's No bang for your buck. I ordered this pie to go

Yelp
Awesome chop salad for lunch today with my Golden Retriever (Pet Friendly for well-behaved dogs). I added almond tea cake to my lunch. Both were to die for and Ana was amazing; when I asked "what kind of oil do you use in the salad?" She replied only EVOO -- I asked is it blended with Canola Oil -- her reply, " we don't do that here."

Jessenia G.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday and got a few items from the bakery. Everything was fresh and delicious. We especially loved the focaccia sandwich. Came here again the following day and the food was delicious as expected. This time we sat and had brunch. We had an avocado toast and a toast with berries on top. They were both awesome! The service was so friendly especially the hostess she was really sweet with our sick kiddo. The restaurant has an old world Italian flare. I cannot wait to come back.
google avatar

Leanne D.

Yelp
Came here for lunch the first time with my hubby, brother and sister in law as we all have been wanting to try this place out. Service was excellent and they have a nice bakery section with some yummy looking pastries. We also noticed we can buy freshly made pasta to take home with us which is great to know since there is nothing like housemade pasta! Our table ordered a Pizza which was like a personal sized salciccia pizza, aglio e olio pasta with shrimp, fettuccine with red sauce and salmon and the finocchio fennel salad with shrimp. Everything was very good! I was trying to watch my carb intake today and next time I want to try their pasta since it looked so tasty! We also ordered a piece of lemon cake to share. The lemon cake tasted more like a vanilla cake and had no lemon flavoring to it at all. Not too sweet which we liked. Still good with a cup of coffee but we were disappointed by the lack of lemon flavor. A good coffee cake but otherwise somewhat on the dry side. We want to come back for dinner as they have more pasta options and focaccia bread offerings. The restaurant is not considered a traditional Italian but more an Italian fusion according to our server. .
google avatar

Calvin N.

Yelp
Tomato sauce always good; pasta was extremely mushy and under seasoned, meatballs were dry and sandy

D A.

Yelp
Evening Meal! Quality pasta dishes, vegetarian could have been a bit more exciting. Large serving easily serves 1 per portion. Pudding options limited to angel delight or pastries from earlier in the morning. Not great. GIVE THE PEOPLE TIRAMISU! Ambiance lacking at 6-7 pm midweek, no background music. Hosts / staff all great.
google avatar

Zen E.

Yelp
Danielle continues to knock it out of the park. This place has everything. Beautiful morning pastries. Most fun, European style lunch with old world wines - we share a salad and flatbread or pasta. Fabulous dinner with secondos. Servers are local and friendly.

Yelp
5 star all the way around! I had scrambled eggs and one of the best dishes I've ever tasted- Noci! Made with house nut butter, strawberries, blueberries, dried figs, toasted almonds, honey and seat salt. Topped off with a cinnamon latte and Prosecco- absolutely heavenly! The location is perfect, fun sunny outdoor patio, attentive friendly staff. The pricing is far under what I expected for such high quality ingredients! This entire meal and both drinks only $34! Loved the vibe and decor- can't wait to come back and bring my out of town guests in the future! Lovely place!!

Rachel M.

Yelp
So so so yum! Loved the short rib pasta and the bruschetta appetizer was perfect. Very kind staff as well

Yelp
Great food and service. Their meat balls are fantastic and so are their pizzas. Great atmosphere.

Yelp
I miss our experience here! What a lively and lovely cafe/restaurant filled with happy staff members. We came here for a quick pastry fill up/bathroom break session while on our way back home from Los Angeles. What a wonderful surprise our time here was! We ordered a few pastries and regretfully did not order the handmade pasta ready for pickup and the pasta sauce which were both on display. They also have local treats, drinks and groceries on display that you can opt to buy if interested. The pastry treats we tried: Berry scone Chocolate swirl bun Breakfast sausage (homemade) pastry I would love to come back here for dinner and try their pasta with wine and maybe a cheese plate! I would also love to live here lol
google avatar

Shaza R.

Yelp
This was my first time at Giana and it won't be my last. They happily accommodated our party of nine and promptly offered their wine menu while we waited for everyone to come in. All the staff was gracious and offered their recommendations when asked and the service was very fast with all requests. I ordered the risotto ai funghi and we shared some appetizers. The risotto melted in your mouth and the mushrooms were perfectly cooked. It was a very generous portion, and I look forward to the leftovers. The ingredients amongst all dishes were fresh. We were all shocked at how the tomatoes were so sweet and how the herbs complemented each dish. The restaurant is an open concept with bakery items and imported Italian provisions, which gives it such a cozy vibe. They are accommodating to dogs, which was a very pleasant surprise. I can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Nijole T.

Yelp
The food here is outstanding! Service was wonderful as well. They have a bakery, and to go section with pastas, bread and sweet treats, which was all fantastic. There is also a dine in restaurant area, we really enjoyed their breakfast and cannot wait to come back to try their lunch and dinner next time. The quality as well worth the splurge and the ingredients are light and healthy. Wonderful dining option in the area!
google avatar

Marie-pier B.

Yelp
I am so glad we came here for breakfast. We love their Maison restaurants and recently learned they opened up this new concept, which reminds me of a great concept we saw recently while traveling to Italy - Signorvino. Giana has this very nice farmhouse vibe, great customer service and delicious food. I also love their logo! I would recommend the Fungo Pane toast (if you like mushrooms), it is absolutely amazing tasting. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Rachel N.

Yelp
Wow! Such amazing service, food, ambiance... just everything! We ordered the Spinaci pizza and the Tomato salad. Everything was very tasty and fresh. The olive oil cake was delectable. Unbeknownst to me, after visiting this restaurant I happened upon their sister restaurant, Maison. Incredible service at this place, as well! I just went in to grab a coffee, and we were seated and served delicious hot drinks in these gorgeous porcelain cups. I spilled my cappuccino a little, and our waiter remade it without me even asking. Very happy I found Giana. I can't wait to tell my friends and be back!
google avatar

Rhoda S.

Yelp
Owner Danielle used to be here all the time baking and it was terrific. Manager Lauren does an excellent job but I think Danielle is stretched too thin between 4 restaurants and it shows. It used to be packed at lunchtime but not anymore. I think others realize the difference too. I have seen Danielle's responses to previous reviews so I suspect her response after reading this will be much like her previous responses where she deflects. It's just so obvious that it is much less crowded here than it used to be at breakfast and lunch and so less fun vibes.
google avatar

Micaela C.

Yelp
Ladies and gents, I stand corrected. I went again and wow short rib pasta is to die for! Also, we ordered two salads--mmm!! I will absolutely drag more friends and fam here.
google avatar

Lexi C.

Yelp
I love coming here for breakfast or brunch. Some of my favorites are the frittata, eggs pomodoro, and the french toast-style plates are delicious too. Sometimes the service can be pretty slow, even if it doesn't seem busy, so if I'm super in a rush, I'll pick a quicker option, or take something from the case.
google avatar

Jordan B.

Yelp
This will become a staple for my wife and I. We enjoyed some of their wine from their shop and a charcuterie board that was to die for.

Emmy B.

Yelp
The best Italian food in the OC. I would recommend this restaurant and bakery to anyone living or visiting Dana Point. The bread and pastries were so good as well. We wanted more bread for our dish and we got a whole loaf and what we didn't finish from the loaf we brought home. Great idea from our server. She was very nice and helpful with suggestions. So awesome service. The vibe of the restaurant, bakery, market reminded me of Europe, giving a casual but elegant style. Love the food and service. The next time we're in Orange County, we will definitely go here again.
google avatar

Morgan W.

Yelp
I know I have already written a few reviews, but I can't say enough about how wonderful this restaurant is! This is my second day in a row coming in to get the Noci with feta and a London fog. Our favorite waiter was here, Jake! He always goes above and beyond to ensure that our meal is perfect! Quick, efficient, and friendly! He's the best!
google avatar

Dominique J.

Yelp
Very good steak, I wish they didn't take the steak n eggs off the breakfast menu. All the food we've had was amazing. My son loves the croissants!
google avatar

Celine P.

Yelp
Went here recently and really enjoyed it! I went during breakfast/lunch time. The interior is very relaxing and invite. I enjoyed that there are seating areas, a full bar, and to-go ordering options. I ended up getting the cinnamon latte and eggs pomodoro. The pomodoro was sooo good. You could literally eat the sauce by itself. I also ordered a morning bun and tea cake to go, both were delish. I definitely would like to try this place again!
google avatar

Carolyn F.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast dishes on the menu. The pastries are exceptional. Loved the service and the coffee! Pleasant outdoor patio to dine on a sunny morning.
google avatar

Cheyenne P.

Yelp
Great and friendly service. Nice ambience and delicious food. Prices are fair. My favorite were the cavatelli and the salmone toast.we will definitely be back to try more menu items.

Yelp
A friend wanted to try Giana. I've been a few times. My daughter just had her 4 wisdom teeth pulled out a day ago, not able to eat regular food yet. However, we wanted to meet our friend here on Sunday. We brought one soft food container for my daughter to eat and my friend and I ordered from the menu. The waitress came over and demanded that my daughter put her food away as requested by ( Danielle ) the owner. " a food violation" she said. We explained why she had to have this food, and would be discreet, and this was her first meal today. The waitress did not care one bit. I could not believe what I was witnessing. SHOCKED actually. I asked what would Gianna restaurant do if you had a baby and brought your baby food to the table like so many of us Moms have done... ??? as I am saying this, I turn to the table next to us and just by chance see a family with their own baby food on the table... The waitress walked away, we never saw her again, it was like she disappeared. we finished, paid our bill and left so my daughter could eat " her baby food" in the car. It really made us so sad, to think that anybody would consciously demand that. Shame on you Gianna establishment. Shame on you.
google avatar

Grace S.

Yelp
We finally had a chance to stop in to check out the new Gianna Bakery and Provisions restaurant. Danielle, the owner and chef once again has done a phenomenal job! The service was excellent and the bakery section is "top quality" deliciousness! We bought a loaf of their sourdough bread and I can't even begin to tell you how delicious it is! The next morning I made an avocado toast with a soft egg and the toast was the star! I'll go in over and over again just to pick up their breads and in muffins! We sat down and had their frittata and a house made biscuit with butter and split it because it was a big enough portion for two people. I didn't take many photos except for a 1/2 eaten frittata but I'll do a photo update next time I'm there. In closing, I forgot to mention they make fresh pasta daily and we bought bucatini and the bite was spot on in its texture, color and taste!
google avatar

Tanya S.

Yelp
I came here to get a couple of cookies and they have no cookies. Very disappointing. When you search cookies on Yelp, this place is the first place that comes up in Dana Point.
