The Best Restaurants in Monterey and Carmel | Eater SF

"Amongst the rich and famous, towns where celebrities are literally mayors, a no frills pizza place is all the more important. Gianni’s on Lighthouse Avenue does the trick. This old school pizza parlor opened in 1974 when Carl and Ginger Costa decided to honor their family roots from Palermo. Now fans come in for the veritable library of a menu: garlic bread, ricotta-stuffed calzones, garlic and shrimp pizzas, and so much more." - Paolo Bicchieri

Wow this was our favorite place on the peninsula! Service was awesome, the kids at the counter were so polite and caring. The food was delicious and huge portions. We also loved watching the Giants game on the TVs near the bar. Highly recommend!

Google
My daughter and I were planning to have dinner elsewhere. However, she found Gianni's Pizza through other Google reviews. They have great parking. Even though it was packed, we found a table. Exceptional pizza, ravioli, and fresh salad. Great variety of fountain drinks. Italian gelato and candies.

Dzina Bur

Google
Stopped by this pizzeria and was really pleased. The Margherita pizza had a crispy thin crust and super fresh toppings—absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was cozy, which made the experience even better. The only downside was that service felt a bit slow, but honestly, the amazing food made up for it. Definitely a great spot for pizza lovers!

Google
This was a really nice pizza parlor. The pizza is huge We ordered a small pepperoni and that came with 6 slices. While we waited we enjoyed some ice cream that was amazing. It does get busy but they move fairly quick.

Charm Crumrine

Google
Great pizza. Very loud and you had to leave your table to order and get your own drinks. No service people to take your order. I was with 8 people and it was not convenient at all. With that said, the food was amazing.

They ADD a SURCHARGE when you use a credit card! Better establishments NEVER do this. A business has many expenses; the credit card merchant fee is one of those expenses. That cost should simply be "baked in" to what they charge. I would have NO problem if they raised their prices accordingly, but like most people, I hate "EXTRA" or any "ADD-ON" fees. Generally, the food here is good, but it is also variable. I often get the lasagna, which is usually terrific, but most recently it was substandard. Good pizza, with many options. You order at the counter, and they bring it to your table. They have genuine Coke products. Parking is easy. They have a nice parking lot with additional parking on the street.

You're not getting a table unless you get there when they open up lol. Very popular place and I can understand why pizza is delicious

Right off the bat, the atmosphere invites you in. The great classic Italian music reminds you of simpler times, but it's the food that will bring you back. It's not often you see a gelato display inside a pizza restaurant in America, but there it was. And it was delicious. Let's not forget the pizza! I could tell when walking in to Gianni's we were not going to be disappointed. The smell reminded me of Italy, which we just came back from. The pizza was very good too. I'm sure the rest of the menu will be just as tasty as well. So don't hesitate to give Gianni's a try. We were very happy we did.

Yelp
When you first pull up to this restaurant, it gives the aura that it's going to have the best pizza you've ever tasted. I tempered my expectations because I've been fooled before. Once you enter, the atmosphere and the smell of fresh food being made raises your hopes. We had a bigger party and the big table was taken, but they did their best to seat us all fairly close together. That first bite of pizza was DIVINE. It was clearly made with a recipe that had been passed down for generations. Worth every penny and every minute of wait time. If you are within a 10-mile radius of this place, make the trip. You need to taste their food.

Yelp
I looked on Google map to see what restaurant is near Carney Row and found this restaurant. The workers here are nice and friendly. My wife ordered Gianni's Special pizza, Caesar salad, and Lasagna. Caesar Salad came out quick and fresh. The pizza was so delicious and flavorful. They put a lot of toppings on top. The one topping that they put a lot was olives and I got happy. The pizza crust was sloppy made. Some crust was thinner then others. Lasagna was good and delicious with some small meatballs on the inside. They didn't over sauce the lasagna which I love. Don't for get to get their gelato, it's so delicious and not that sweet Overall I will definitely come back.

Yelp
This restaurant is seriously one the best American-Italian restaurants I have ever been to, i would go so far as to the say one the best restaurants ever. My gf is Italian and she loved it also. I had marinara pizza, she got calzone We reference this place for the ectasy it gave us almost every week since we came here. The ambiance is all American. Local teenagers working and bussing. Classic American Italian interior. We are going to come back to Monterrey just to go here!!!! Must stop shop!!! Experience ecstasty!!!

Yelp
The pizza was great! We ordered the 2 small pizzas one tasty chicken pizza- 1/2 BBQ chicken 1/2 Chicken Pesto and one signature pizza- 1/2 Gianna's Special 1/2 Cheese. They accidentally gave us 1/2 Pesto di Mare instead of the 1/2 Chicken Pesto. When we asked to confirm if it was what we ordered. They apologized and said they'd make us a mini pizza of Chicken Pesto. The ambiance is great! It's a family friendly pizzeria with an upbeat atmosphere. Shout out to Savannah for being so kind and helpful. When we arrived there was a customer that needed some assistance and she was very professional, discrete and went above and beyond. Overall, great experience & great food!

Yelp
Great pizza!! We called in an order for pick up. The Place was hopping but they have a to go counter for ordering and pick up that moves quickly. Old fashioned pizzeria with booths and tables. Lots of happy families were sitting around enjoying the delicious food! We picked up the pizza and a couple Italian sodas and went to watch the sunset.

Yelp
Food was great! Pizza was so good! Service was great as well definitely will be coming back to this place! Gets really packed!

Yelp
We tried Gianni's Super Veggie Pizza during our vacation in the Monterey area - and let's just say, it was a super disappointment. The pizza arrived cold, greasy, piled high with raw veggies on top barely melted cheese, and a crust that still had raw dough in the middle. And by "middle," I mean a solid 7-inch raw circumference. "Disappointed" doesn't quite cover it. The pizza was so undercooked it felt like we were supposed to finish baking it ourselves. We gave up on Gianni's and called it a night--hungry, but wiser.
google avatar

Cynthia C.

Yelp
Good place for pizza if your near the aquarium. The pizza is good and so is the Gelato they have. There have good options for the ice cream. The wait is a little long because it can get busy. You basically seat yourself and have to ask for the table to be serviced. They don't wait on you or have pizza serving tools. You have to use your knife. The pizza has a lot of toppings and family friendly.
google avatar

Heidi C.

Yelp
The restaurant offers plenty of seating and parking, with its own lot. You place your order at the register and receive a number if you're dining in. You can then choose your own table. The service was excellent! We ordered the small Gianni's Special. Though we were a party of two, the pizza was large enough for three, especially with the addition of Alfredo pasta with clams. The pizza had a thick, crispy crust all around, and it was absolutely delicious! Often, the middle of pizzas can be too doughy, but this one was perfectly toasted from edge to edge. I loved it! I will definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Yelp
Giannis is a self service restaurant that has so much to choose from! We got a small BBQ Chicken pizza, garlic cheese bread, and Cesar's salad. We loved everything about it. Everything tasted delicious. The restaurant also has a bar area if you prefer that; you order what you'd like and then seat yourself in any available table. It's a nice spot to come after a beach day in Monterrey! It seems to get more packed over the weekends. We went on a Monday around 7 PM and it wasn't as crowded. I would definitely come back!
google avatar

Cathy H.

Yelp
Simply delicious- I'm really not a pizza person but my gosh was this good. So glad I live 2.5 hours away or I'd be here every day
google avatar

Candace W.

Yelp
Giannis is still a solid choice! It was jam packed on a Saturday night. The line wrapped around but I wasn't going to give up. I had 4 of the garlic bread sticks since they are so good. I also tried the spaghetti and meatballs and it was really flavorful. I also got a half Hawaiian half Mario's and both were good pizzas! I really love the food here and the nostalgia of being in a pizza parlor. However I didn't like that most of the tables were dirty and even when I pointed out the table needed to be cleaned the busboy just ignored it and never came back.

Yelp
I have been going to Gianni's Pizza for over 25 yrs. What happened to the Crust of the Pizza, it tasted and had the Texture of their Take Out Pizza cardboard boxes ! Temperature of the oven to hot ? No problem, the manager Ordered another one to replace it. I guess one bad one in twenty five years is not to bad !
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
Giannis pizza was such a treat! Ordering takes place at the front counter and a number is given for your table where the food will be delivered. My husband and I ordered a medium Paul's primo and one bread stick that was calling our names at the front counter. I mean who can pass up a breadsticks when a mountain of them are staring at you from the other side of the counter? The toppings in our pizza were plentiful and included: mozzarella cheese, canadian bacon, pepperoni & salami, olive oil, fresh sliced. tomatoes, parmesan cheese, oragano, and fresh garlic. The medium was way too big for the two of us but we had plenty of left overs. Overall, our food was delicious!!! When you walk in, there are plenty of seating options right away, but the place wraps around with even more spots that are easy to see as soon as you enter. Also, there is a separate bar where you can order and pay for adult beverages. My only complaint is the cleanliness of the tables and bathrooms. We couldn't find a clean table and we ended up just busing our own table to have a place to sit.
google avatar

Matt W.

Yelp
Service at the front was okay. Restaurant had a nostalgic feel. Food was nothing special. Small pizza and 2 meatballs had no flavor, for $52. To top it off, as we were leaving I asked the bartender about the area since we weren't from around here and were looking for a couple social spots. He answered uninterestedly, poor eye contact, and mid conversation he started texting on his phone. Wasn't impressed.
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
The pizza was good but we came in around 430pm on a Sunday afternoon hopin* to beat the dinner rush but it was packed and noisy, overstimulating for some of us and there was some confusion on where to order. Two lines but one said "self serve". Either wat we ended up taking our food to go.
google avatar

Juan G.

Yelp
Gianni's Pizza offers some solid pies, fully loaded with toppings and that irresistible cheese pull in every bite. We ordered the medium Hawaiian Delight and were pleased with the generous portion size and the abundance of toppings. The best part? They don't skimp on the cheese--each bite comes with that satisfying, gooey pull that pizza lovers crave. As for the service, Gianni's is an order-then-seat kind of place, so interactions with staff are minimal, but they're always friendly. The food arrives promptly, though the restaurant can get chaotic and packed depending on the day you visit. Unfortunately, my experience was soured by the state of their soda fountain. When I went to fill my drink, the machine was out of ice and many of the soda options were unavailable. Worse still, the Diet Pepsi I poured tasted like dirty water--not once, but twice, indicating a serious lack of cleaning and maintenance. This left a bad taste in more ways than one.
google avatar

Yelp
The best Italian food I have ever eaten in my life. We appetizer the bread with meat sauce. Fantastic Then we shared the Antipasto salad. Best ever. They brought the lasagna. OMG. Best ever. Love this place.
google avatar

Daniela A.

Yelp
Always a great place for a big group. When I usually come it's for a bday, a group gathering or a bunch of friends! Pizza is always good. The bread sticks are always the best to dip on the marinera sauce while you wait for your pizza. Weekends are usually pretty busy so expect to wait a little. But other than that they do have a lot of space and a private party room in the back. For bday or big group events. Parking is good but could get full. Street parking is another option. Service is okay. Not much to it everyone's is pretty forward on ordering and serving

Yelp
I tried to give Gianni's another chance. After all, an over a decade love affair deserves chance after chance... I ordered an xtra large cheese/ bbq chicken pizza. I also ordered the assorted appetizers. To my dismay, my pizza arrived at my table burned. The cheese pizza is unacceptably burned and the bbq chicken was missing ingredients, no cilantro... and was a bit undercooked... It took 30 min to get our pizza because Gianni's is always so busy.A burmed/ unfercooked mess was served to us... I've given Gianni's so many chances because I didn't want our long love affair to end.... But after so many chances, I just can't stay anymore... The quality has gone downhill. Waaaaayyy down... This is coming from a patron that has been supporting them for 16 years (i did the math) It saddens me to say goodbye to Gianni's. But know the flaw is not in Gianni's himself. He is a a stand up guy. It's in the quality of the employees and shift managers... Such a pity... Arrivederci Gianni's....

Joann G.

Yelp
The pizza was great! I would recommend it. The Fettuccine Alfredo was NOT! Store bought canned fettuccine Alfredo tastes more authentic. The service was good, fast and friendly. Over all the restaurant was clean, family friendly and offered a lot of seating. I'll be back for the PIZZA!!!
google avatar

Joseph G.

Yelp
Ordered a Margherita pizza and it was delicious. The crust was very crispy as well as the sauce complimenting it. The cheese was really good also. The tomato was perfect as well as the basil. The onion was a bit much in the pizza but it didn't take away too much from it. The place is huge but it was my kind of scenery. Customer service was good also, they mostly take your oder up in the front and give you your order. Overall, a great place to dine in. Overall rating: Strong 8 out of 10

Yelp
Tried Gianni's Pizza for the first time, and I was really impressed with the service! As soon as you arrive, you place your order at the counter, get a number, and find your own seat. The food came out incredibly fast. I think I was in and out within 30 minutes, which is perfect if you're looking for a quick and easy meal. I ordered the linguine with clams, and it was pretty good! Next time, I definitely want to try the ravioli and, of course, the pizza. If you're in Monterey and need a fast, casual spot with great service, Gianni's is a solid choice. Looking forward to going back!

sir._. l.

Yelp
Overpriced asf. It tastes like ordinary pizza and "gelato." Perfect tourist money grab. Breadsticks do taste fresh and have a nice texture but they super bland. They need more salt like the pizza. Digiorno tastes better tbh. I don't really like how tables are first come first serve. They need a host.
google avatar

Laneisha T.

Yelp
Came on a Saturday it was pretty crowded line was long but we were able to find a table. We placed our order and sat and waited for our food. The food didn't take long but I wanted some ranch and asked a server for ranch and instead of getting it they told me I'd have to go stand in the long line again just for ranch. That honestly was annoying there should be no reason for me to have my food and then have to go stand in the line to get some ranch and my food get cold. So that kinda distracted from the food honestly. The pizza was ok definitely remember to ask for everything you'll need up front because otherwise they'll make you wait in the long line for it.

Yelp
Food was great. Service was not bad and the restaurant had a good vibe. Was visiting out of town and this was a great choice for dinner.

Yelp
Great pizza and service on one thing I was disappointed with the forks are so cheap it's a shame . They hurt my fingers.

Yelp
I volunteered to organize the team dinner for the Monterey baseball tournament again this year and picked Gianni's (last year I picked Hula's). Andy, the manager was my contact and he was great! Super helpful and flexible in accommodating us! Pros- pizzas were super tasty and devoured upon arrival! I preordered a lot of pizzas too! Picked out 15XLs, plus 3 family sized Caesar salads (for the parents) - this was for 46 people in total (22 players). Note: we did have leftovers and everyone was stuffed! I probably could have picked 10 pizzas and should have ordered 4 salads, but everyone seemed to enjoy the variety... Additionally - Gianni's allowed for a larger group...last year we had just under 40 and took up the entire extra room at Hula's, this year we shared space with 2 other parties (including the team that just beat us, literally!) Gianni's party room is quite big, so no baseball brawl took place (haha, totally kidding, both groups of boys were/are totally chill!) Gianni's also did not have a room fee since we're a high school sports team, thought that was super cool! Per person, including covering the dinner cost for coaches and their families, it came out to $20 per person, so super reasonable! Cons- if we could have, it would have been nice to have our own space, like at Hula's. Gianni's also didn't have an option to order party size trays of pastas, but those are small cons in the grand scheme of things! Anyone that wanted pasta could order it on their own though... the option to self order pastas, drinks, etc., was there (another great perk!) Very happy with last night's dinner spot!

Yelp
Quality Pizza and great service. Self seating and easy to find a spot during lunch rush. The Pizza tasted real and made with better quality ingredients. It veggie Pizza tasted fresh and tasted like fire cooked quality. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for an easy and inexpensive way to feed the family and still have time to walk the shops and beaches.
google avatar

Yelp
Drives by... Mhmm maybe next time. Drives by again mhmm not in the mood for pizza. Drives by after walking around the Monterey bay aquarium, that is the one. The parking lot is always packed and the smells from outside will draw you in. The windows to the kitchen are right on lighthouse and you can watch as one might say where the pizza magic happens. The breadsticks for $1 are large and in charge! Oh lord they a coming. Aka don't be like me and order one for each family member. Ranch is baby and child approved. I, nor the family, were disappointed, even with the leftovers. Yummmmmm.

Gary S.

Yelp
They ADD a SURCHARGE when you use a credit card! Better establishments NEVER do this. A business has many expenses; the credit card merchant fee is one of those expenses. Yelp
The service was bad our pizza took 1 hour my calozoni was 1 hour late I had to go tell them I haven't received mine.webdecided to take it home, when I got home it was worse, the calozoni just had cheese in it I wanted a combination everything in it and I told them that twice and when I got home there was nothing but cheese in it this is the first time I am not satisfied with them there was so many people people waiting for an hour to eat which I understand but today was really,so many people kids running around screaming
google avatar

Breanna G.

Yelp
my husband said this is the best meal he's had in a while, the wait time was about an hour from walking in to getting our food, but that's to be expected during spring break on a Friday night. The ambience was very vibrant and busy. 8/10. Would return!
google avatar

Eve N.

Yelp
This place is a must, must try! Drop what you're doing and head to this pizzeria now if you are in the area! Pair your pizza with a salad to eat your greens! Service was fast even on a busy day. We sat at the bar before we had our takeout ready. Cool ambiance with pizza connoisseurs!

Lina C.

Yelp
Food was a bit too oily for my liking; we got the lasagna and the pizza. The lasagna had a passable taste, but it was drenched in oil (which sort of turned me off); the pizza was better than the lasagna, but it was nothing noteworthy. It was still too oily IMHO! At the register, we weren't given a choice for a tip lower than 15%. I was initially OK with this (iffy about it, but whatever), but again, the food quality didn't meet my standards. There was quite a bit of a wait between the time we ordered and the time we got the pizza (35 min, BUT, it was pretty busy). The restaurant itself is very nice and has a very inviting feeling. If 3 stars is average, this place is slightly below it. The inflated prices (accounting for the 15% tip), below average food quality, and pretty decent ambiance, I can't find it in me to give it anything higher than a 2.5.

Meloni M.

Yelp
DUDE!?!?!?! SERIOUSLY!?!!!! The best Italian I've had in decades! We had a pizza & lasagna and it was the best ever!!!!!! I can't say enough good things about this place!!!
google avatar

Diane K.

Yelp
This place is hopping! Decent pizza at good prices in Monterey. We had half vegetarian and half margherita. The veggie was good, but I've never had a margherita pizza with onions before. There were lots of onions. Family size salad was also well done. This is a nice family place for pretty good pizza in Monterey.

Quentin

Yelp
The pizza is as bad as the service. Trust the reviews that compare it to Costco or DiGiorno - personally I think bother are superior to this garbage which was somehow both undercooked and burnt. We got three 8" mini pizzas, all with different toppings and the same problems. The breadsticks are great though, and so is the marinara. Maybe chance it if you only want appetizers. But otherwise, you've been warned.
google avatar

Robert F.

Yelp
Next time you come to Monterey you need to try this place out. The best pizza I've had in years!!!The Gianni's Special. Toppings were on point and the crisp crust... Sorry.. no picks of the Mint Chip Gelato... It was just that great!!
google avatar

Tiffany R.

Yelp
Great pizza parlor in downtown Monterey! Love this place. The moment you walk in you instantly feel right at home. Pizza is delicious with many options. Great for lunch or dinner
google avatar

Debi R.

Yelp
This is my husband's favorite pizza place outside of Federal Hill in RI. It's kind of a trek from SoCal, so when in we're in the area we have to stop in at least once. This place is huge. It's hard to find an open table on a weekend. Definitely a local's favorite for sports parties and general group gatherings. Service is faster than you'd expect for the amount of take out orders and the vast number of tables. I'm not a pizza aficionado, but I thought it was good. The lasagna is really good. It's chock full of mozzarella, which is how I like it.
google avatar

Kathee P.

Yelp
After being charged a RIDICULOUS amount of money for a mediocre (at best) meal at a Cannery Row restaurant the evening before, we decided to walk a couple blocks up the road from the Aquarium and see if we could find a more reasonably priced place with good food. And we sure did!! Gianni's Pizza is a great family restaurant with a wonderful salad and one of the best pizza's we have EVER had. We had the veggie supreme and it had plenty of mushrooms, black olives, onions, green peppers, artichoke hearts and tomatoes on top. The sauce was on point and the cheese stringy perfection. We loved the crust!!! Sometimes that gets left on the plate. Not this time! Perfect with a cold draft beer. Looking forward to having the pizza again for breakfast. When we return to Monterey we will definitely return!! And we may crave it enough to come back sooner!!
google avatar

Yelp
We will be in Carmel/Monterey next week for our annual anniversary trip. I can already taste the deliciousness! I can not wait to eat here.

Nick G.

Yelp
The cheese slide off the slice 4 times like how someone would slide into your wife's dm. I'm the only Italian in the group I was with and this only happened to me. Service is good tho questa pizza è una delizia per gli italiani
google avatar

R. P.

Yelp
Very cool inside. Just a very fun vibe and lots of brickwork. It scream "pizza". Everyone that got pizza looks so happy that they finally got a pizza and a table. The issue is that the pizza is just meh. It's a little soggy, not great flavor, and just a 6,8 for real. I'd probably not come back unless I was forced.
google avatar

Gabe Y.

Yelp
Imagine those cartoons that you smell the pie and float towards it, that's this place. It literally enticed us even though we weren't hungry. We got an 8" pie and it had massive dough and cheese pull. Hot and fresh in around 20 minutes. Pretty good but not the best I've ever had. There's also gelato in the store which looks pretty good. Bread sticks were $1 each which was enticing.

Yelp
I've been a lifelong fan of Gianni's! My parents brought me here on trips to the Monterey Aquarium as a child. I absconded to this pizza restaurant during my rehearsal dinner with my closest friends. This is a haven for pizza on the Monterey Peninsula. A simple cheese pizza describes how perfect pizza can be. A perfect crust that maintains a crunch, red sauce with an amazing blend of herbs, mozzarella cheese toasted just enough to accentuate every flavor contained within. I drive hours from the Bay Area just to indulge in an x-large with enough to take home for leftovers. The interior is reminiscent of old Italy and is the same since my childhood. Clean and well maintained over the years, you know this family restaurant cares about their customers and the community.

Yelp
My family and I went in on a busy Friday night around 630pm. Self service for ordering, very long line to order but went pretty fast with two registers. Plenty of seating area. Waited about 45 minutes for our food which wasn't bad considering how busy it was. The food was amazing! My favorite was the chicken pesto pizza. All the staff were very nice, this was my first time going. Can't wait to be back!
