A New Sweet Potato Vodka Is Honoring Texas Black History - Eater Houston

"Distilled and bottled in Houston’s Fifth Ward at Gulf Coast Distillery, the 80-proof vodka is made from a combination of sweet potatoes blended with russet potatoes and Texas sweet corn, which results in a rich, full-bodied flavor with buttery notes and a hint of sweet caramel." - Brittany Britto Garley

From Mike “Big Chief” Hiatt – The Whiskey Trip Podcast If you find yourself on the east side of Houston and you’re chasing bold spirits, cold beer, and damn good food—Giant Texas Distillers is your spot. We had the chance to sit down with Distiller Julian, and let me tell you, the man knows how to craft a whiskey that hits with Texas heat and Southern soul. Every pour had character—from their straight bourbon to their special barrel-finished expressions. Julian’s passion and precision are in every drop. Mike Crosby, the marketing manager, is the kind of guy who makes you feel like you’ve been part of the Giant Texas family for years. He’s the perfect ambassador for the brand—genuine, knowledgeable, and just flat-out fun to hang with. The food? 🔥 Absolutely delicious. And the beer? Cold and crafted with care. The vibe at Giant Texas is equal parts industrial grit and Texas hospitality. It’s a one-stop shop for whiskey lovers, foodies, and anyone who appreciates a great local hangout. Giant Texas isn’t just a distillery—it’s an experience. From the still to the table, this place delivers. Huge thanks to Julian, Mike, and the whole team for the hospitality. We’ll be back, and we’ll be bringing friends. Cheers from The Whiskey Trip!

A fam member recommended this place and we decided to try it. The beer was really good and the mixed drinks too. The view of downtown from the 2nd floor is awesome. They offer tours and the staff is super friendly. Our waitress was super friendly and made some recommendations on drinks.

The prideful Goat 12 year is amazing, speaking as a goat... so many drink and food options that are lit. The staff are welcoming and knowledgeable about the craft. Tours available with staff. I would recommend this to those who are bourbon, whiskey, vodka, and cognac. Relaxing and up to date atmosphere. Children welcome, no smoking atmosphere. A must try🫶

You cannot sleep on these drinks! The flights are hands down amazing and worth every penny! We had the vodka, whiskey, and rye flights and the pork belly babe…10/10

Okay, here's that Google review for Giant Texas Distillery: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Giant Texas Distillery is a must-visit! I recently tried their UH Straight Bourbon Whiskey and wow, just wow. It's smooth, complex, and has a fantastic finish. Seriously a top-notch bourbon. The atmosphere of the distillery is also great – you can tell they're passionate about what they do. And as a proud Houston Cougar, I have to say, enjoying a glass of this fine bourbon just feels right. Go Coogs! If you're in the area and appreciate good whiskey, make sure to check this place out. GO COOGS!!

This place was such an awesome surprise. We went for a tamale festival (which was yummy, but not a lot of vendors) but the distillery was beautiful and the cocktails were good. The bartender was a wealth of knowledge despite being busy. Jasmin provided great service. The place and owner has an awesome back story. They could do some serious events with the size and location. Would love to see more out there.

Google
While touring the Texas Whisky Trail, I stopped in to see what Giant Texas Distillery was all about. This place has a very nice setup with a huge tasting room that has plenty of seating. We tried various whisky's to include some amazing Cognac that they had to offer. In addition, we tried some food that really surprised us - the loaded fries were AMAZING! This distillery is certainly huge and on the path to doing great things. It is awesome to see that they are growing to a size where they can source whisky to other Texas distilleries. This would be a HUGE step for small distilleries and keeping it local. Overall, I was really surprised by the quality, service, and overall great experience at Giant. Check out their steak nights! Thank you for the hospitality!

Do the tour!!! It was great. They have a wonderful patio that overlooks downtown. Not surprising, great mixed drink menu. Also had food that is better than normal bar food. Would be great for an event!

Yelp
This was a really great place to check out during our food & booze vacation in Houston. We are whiskey club members in AZ and I work part time for that hyper local distillery in AZ so I had a great appreciation for this place. We were not able to take the tour but that's okay, I'm familiar with how whiskey is distilled. So we arrived and had cocktails and food. We sat at the bar area. The staff were friendly and service was good. I enjoyed everything I tried. The best thing I had was a straight pour of the cask strength rye whiskey. I recommend you taste the spirits straight up to get more flavor and I thought the cocktail flavors were okay, need a bit more depth imo. I love the open space of the tasting room/bar area, the lighting is nice and there's good ambiance. The outdoor back patio is nice as well with a good view of downtown. Most fun was their presentation of the smoked whiskey cocktail.

Yelp
Well, for starters, I was overcharged by way of a tip. I tipped in cash and selected no for a tip yet I got home and discovered that I've been charged a 20% tip. I saw the problem and called the business and received no call back and nobody would answer the phone.

Yelp
Where do I start! Been following this place on Instagram and finally made it in this past Saturday! Giant Texas Distillers is amazing and the industrial concept inside is great! Feels like your out of the bustling city of Houston located in Segundo Bario / 5th ward / EADO area ! The handcrafted cocktails were amazing they were able to accompany a party of at least 25 without notice for a birthday and our Hostess Nestor did a great job! Nestor was extremely polite, helpful, and a true hard worker! Stuck with the Giant Mule which is made with whiskey but as a traditional Moscow mule type of drinker, I would recommend this to everyone ! Nestor recommended the Burger and he informed me that the it's 50/50 blend of ground beef and brisket 1/2 patty! Amazing to say the least! Will be back for steak night and thanks again!

Yelp
Fun place! Great ambience. The food was average but the drinks are strong. They had a DJ the night we were there and it was crazy loud. We would have drinks there again, but probably skip the food

Yelp
Based on the reviews, maybe we just had an off night... But that said, it was very off! We came on a Saturday night for a tour and dinner and the place was dead, which was surprising. We arrived early so got a couple cocktails. I had the Blackberry Smash, which was good, and my husband had the Giant Mule, which was awful. It tasted watered down and flavorless. Then we had the tour, which was just very confusing. The tour guide was really nice, but we walked out of it just confused on what they actually do and it felt like he was just ready to go home. I was also expecting more than just one tasting of a Canadian whiskey... Which seemed bizarre for a Texas Distillery. We then got a flight of whiskey and ordered some food. The bartender was pretty rude and just seemed annoyed by our presence. We moved to a table and then had a waitress and she was really nice and helpful. We both ordered burgers and they were mediocre at best. We had the VIPs flight, which was alright, but didn't enjoy anything or the experience enough to take a bottle home. The ambiance inside was really cool, but they need to improve the service and food.

Yelp
Came in for an Astros game date night everyone and everything was very nice. We started with the flight and it was amazing!!

Yelp
This is a very nice new spot in 5th Ward. Please note that upon arrival, you will have to walk upstairs to enter the restaurant. I didn't see an elevator available. The restaurant/bar area is very spacious. It actually has space where it's easy to walk around. The tables are nicely apart and have nice walk-through space. All of the staff was very kind and checked in on guests in good timing. They have a small retail spot where you can buy bottles of liquor, tee shirts, coffee pods, etc. The food and drinks are great. I'm a burger girl so of course that was my order. That burger is delicious! The meat was well done and not dry, and it was nicely seasoned. All of the topping were fresh. My friend ordered a 15-year rum. This was my first time tasting a aged rum, it was so tasteful. I don't normally drink martinis, but their Lemon martini was good. I like the cute look of the old-fashioned drink. They have an outside roof spot called The View. It has spots where you can sit and have a nice view of Downtown and play some games. I'm planning to take my work team here for lunch one day. I do hope they have an elevator available for people who can't take the stairs. They are closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Yelp
I learned about this place during an event and was really excited to see what all they had to offer. Maybe my expectations were set a bit too high, but this was a bit of a disappointment. What they're known for is their whiskey, and that honestly did not disappoint. You can do a whiskey flight and try a few of their drinks for a decent price of $20. I think you get like 4 or 5 tastings with that, so a great way to see which whiskeys you enjoy. Where they fell a bit short with this though is that there was no one to explain what you were drinking, or any notes about what you should be looking for. It was a straight up, here's your flight, enjoy. So if you're looking to learn a bit more about whiskey, not really the place to go. If you're looking to just drink and taste things, sure, this is a great place. I also did enjoy their mixed drinks, averaged priced, but they have a good variety if you're not a big whiskey fan, but want to try something else as well. I did try one of their seasonal drinks, it was a cinnamon apple drink which tasted good, but a bit too sweet for my taste. It needed a bit of acid to brighten it up and freshen it a bit. I'm also a bit on the fence on how I feel that they had an autumn cocktail specials list in January. I'm glad they still had it because I love Fall, but sad that they didn't update it to the season. My biggest disappointment was the food. I truly believe that you can make bar food great. This place, unfortunately, just fell flat for me in taste, portion, pricing, and service. I'll start with the good - I highly recommend the loaded fries. I think for the value, taste, and what you get, it's the most worth it and best bang for your buck. It was pretty tasty and for $11 was a good portion size. It's large enough to share, or to eat as an entree. For the mains, my favorite was the grilled cheese. When it came out, the size was pretty decent and I really enjoyed how thick it was. I did get it with a side salad, which was a bit disappointment since it was a sprinkle of Caesar salad, and seemed a bit skimped on. The other things that we tried that wasn't my favorite were the chicken tenders. First off, chicken tenders is a pretty popular dish, but this didn't even come out as big chicken strips or what I would consider as tenders. They were more chicken nuggets, and were like schoolroom cafeteria chicken tenders that didn't have much flavor to them. Also, you're paying like $13 for like 5 little nuggets and a handful of fries (for an extra $2). It just didn't seem worth it. You'd need to get 2 orders to make it feel a bit more worthwhile to order. Aside from the taste of food, what was disappointing was the service. It started off great because when we sat down, they were attentive, brought us water, and gave us menus. However, in our party, they forgot one of our orders, even though we reminded them multiple times, one person never got their food within the course of 1.5 hours. It was also really hard to flag down a server to even pay. We're ready to leave and trying to ask for the check, but it took another 10 minutes to close out and pay. I think this place has great potential to be amazing, but they still need to make a few adjustments. Wishing them the best going forward.

Yelp
Found this distillery in the boonies east of downtown and the operation they have over there is quite impressive. You'll find a nice tasting/restaurant room in the middle of the distillery. I got the Giant OG flight for $20 which includes the a 'White Doe', two bourbons and a rye. Good pours actually and pretty tasty drinks. They also have other drinks like cocktails, wine/beer for purchase as well. Theres also a menu with some choice bar food selections. I ordered grill chicken tenders with a side salad. 1) It never came out despite us asking where the food was. Nice to get gaslit by the staff. 2) I saw other tables receive their chicken tenders with salad and it looked like crap. Its the same chicken tenders you can find in your middle school lunch line. The side salad is literally a handfull iceburg lettuce, a few shredded cheddar cheese and maybe an onion slice or two. Definitely not worth the $11.25. TBH, I'm kind of glad it didn't come out. Other people in my party got their food. Their grilled cheese actually looked and tasted good. Overall this place is ok. Come for the booze but leave the less than mediocre bar food alone.

Yelp
I've had this place on my radar for awhile. Finally came in for my birthday and it was a good night. The place was spacious and they have a nice patio out back "the view" where you can see downtown. It was a good atmosphere. As soon we walked in we were greeted by two staff members. Nestor was our host and he was GREAT! He constantly checked on us and made great suggestions. He handled about over 20 people. The Smash blueberry was my favorite, not a fan of the guava drink it was too sweet for me. I also had the quesadilla, bomb. It had a dipping sauce that I could not get enough of. I also tried the burger and I'm not a burger girl and I was like "oooo that's good". Overall I felt like they had a variety of options from whiskey, cocktails, and beer. Their food menu provided good selections as well. I will definitely be back for the drinks, food, and views.

Yelp
Good service, manager has been there for awhile, always accommodating. Drinks are solid! Food in the past has been a food truck, but good, reasonably priced & tasty. This is a hidden gem & great for the area. My bf doesn't drink they always accommodate with a good cup of coffee.

Yelp
Whiskey Distillery , what a treat. Went on Th steak night and got a whiskey flight and coffee drink. Fridays have live entertainment. Place has gift shop where can engrave bottle, plus great patio view of downtown. Edgar and team provided good service all round.

Yelp
What a great place, food, drinks and whiskey flight was great! Bartenders were very knowledgeable and provided good service. We will come back when in Houston

Yelp
The "vibe" was very chill, welcoming and warm. Our waiter Nester was very knowledgeable in all the cocktails, flights and other items on the drink menu. Not being a whiskey connoisseur myself, he absolutely helped guide my choices in what cocktails I chose. They had way more than just whiskey on their menu and I was very impressed with the variety: wine, beer, infused vodkas and even non-alcoholic cocktails. We'll definitely come back, especially on nights they have local bands and Dj's coming up.

Yelp
Cool place to grab a drink and some good food. Great view of Downtown Houston. Come grab you a bottle of their liquid courage on sale until 9 pm.

Yelp
what a great hidden gem. great food selection as well as a wonderful specialty cocktail menu. i ordered a smoked old fashioned and it was probably best i've had. the waitstaff was very attentive. we went on a Friday nite, they had a salsa DJ and salsa lessons going on. very entertaining.

Yelp
This is my first distillery experience in Texas, but Gulf Coast is the standard in my opinion. The location is set in the industrial area that allows for a lot of privacy, parking lot space and seclusion if you wanted a private event. The whiskey selection is delicious and well distilled with great American made flavors. If you like Rye whiskey you will love their selection, even their selection and specialty drinks with vodkas and gins are equally great. The indoor seating is well spaced and the industrial decor is elegant and rugged, you can be here with the boys, for a ladies night or a take your special someone here for a date. The staff was very attentive and even allowed us to try some samples for free. If you like what you drink you can purchase bottles to go, I definitely did. I will be back every time when I visit Houston. Cheers!!

Yelp
Alright alright alright! New first time here to watch the Monicas. Drinks amazing. Food is fresh, small menu, but quite tasty. It's in a shady industrial area, security around, well worth the drive.

Yelp
Gulf Coast Distillers is newly opened and is a great place to grab a cocktail. Please note that currently, the Yelp check in offer is 1 free cocktail. My husband and I came to this distiller this evening, around 4:45 pm. When we sat down, we were approached by one of the bartenders for a drink order. After looking over the drink list (which the list does rotate from time to time), we ended up ordering: Giant Mule, $10- My husband liked this drink but I didn't like this one as much. But I am not a big drinker in general. BJ Collins $11- Of the 2 drinks we ordered, I thought this one was the best. It was somewhat sweet and had a nice flavor. My husband also liked this cocktail too. ------------------------ (Total= $11 after Yelp check in offer. Although we both have Yelp, we felt it is best to at least pay for 1 drink) The service was friendly. It was nice that an employee refilled our water glasses a few times during our visit. What was really cool on tonight's visit was that Texas Whiskey Trail happened to be recording their podcast here in the tasting room (which is a really big size and has plenty of seating) in honor of Gulf Coast Distillers' release party of their new whiskey, Giant Rye 100. We didn't know about this event and just happened to pick a good day to come. It was nice that the distillery provided some delicious food in honor of the release party for all patrons (total score for us). If only we lived in this area, we would definitely come back. Please note that this place is located in an industrial area with its own parking lot. Also there are stairs that you need to take up to the tasting room. Not sure if there is an elevator though, for those that may need it. Also this place is not dog friendly :( but is kid friendly.

Yelp
If you haven't ventured over here yet, you're missing out! The owners have turned this original Uncle Bens Rice plant (built in the early 1940s) into a beautiful distillery. Bourbon lovers. Wake up! But wait. It gets better. They also make vodka and beer too. They are still expanding and upgrading and will start making a gin and a rum too! If you're looking for something fun to do on a Saturday, swing by and do the tour and tasting! You won't be disappointed. The tour guides are awesome and knowledgeable. Our tour guide was Cole. He rocked. After your tour, take some time to relax or hang with friends in the huge tasting room. They don't serve food so outside food is welcome. We also brought some games to enjoy while there also. Bring your friends and hang out!

Yelp
Stopped by this unique and giant distillery before playing pickle ball down the street. Our first impression of the space is that it's a really cool warehouse kinda vibe but the concept doesn't seem cohesive. They had big TVs playing the Astros game, but absolutely blaring hip hop/r&b music for the 6 patrons in the bar. Is it a club? Sports bar? We had a couple drinks before splitting the 1/2lb burger. The drinks were too sweet and I have no idea if the bourbon is good or not because the flavor is totally overpowered by blackberry simple syrup. Every drink they have has a simple syrup--odd for a distillery not to highlight their alcohol. Drink wasn't bad just way too sweet. Wait staff friendly and attentive and the place was really clean. The burger was good but brioche bun not cut evenly and seemed a little dry/stale. Burger tasted as expected and was juicy. I'd be interested in trying a whiskey flight and other food and give them a second chance. Great space with a ton of potential but need some tweaks.

Yelp
Taking over old bens rice factory, this distillery have all the factors you are looking for. We came for our friends birthday during their soft opening. We tried a few of their cocktails on the menu. Everything isn't what they sound. They are BETTER, which makes it key for unique. You wouldn't go wrong if you choose the cosmic rock, the 95 banks, the dark and Smokey and the BJ Collins. My favorite would be the dark and Smokey. Not only is it a show to see it being made but the taste is very unique. I would suggest taking a slight sniff then a sip on the first go. It has a sweet taste and it such a good combination with the smoke of tobacco. The cosmic rock is also a favorite. Mike and cole are really great and personable. Cole gave the group a tour around the distillery and was quite informative. I felt like I had a crash course in whiskey making. I can't wait to come back when they're filling running with beers on the menu. Would recommend if you're a whiskey fan.

Yelp
Fantastic food, drinks, and service! We were celebrating a birthday and they went above and beyond to make sure it was special! Definitely will be returning

Yelp
Gulf Coast Distillers and its bar, "Ben's Den, is a great add to Houston's distillery scene -- a better spot to spend time than Yellow Rose, while less of a bar-hopping crowd than 8th Wonder Distillery. The bartender was extremely skilled; the Cosmic Rock was unique while an Old Fashioned with the Giant 91 offered smooth bourbon paired with sweetness from agave. The atmosphere was quiet, but is sure to evolve a bit as more people find out about it. On the day I went, tables featured games, and several screens showed college football. While the design is great, it would be nice to see more information on the menu or walls about each of their products -- as I was new to their products, there was a bit of a learning curve. The team at Ben's Den is off to a great start -- be sure to check this place out!

Yelp
Never been her but plan to try. Thought I was posting at a different stillery

Yelp
I really liked Gulf Coast Distillers! You get a lot of options to choose from when it comes to whiskey. It was really busy during the time I went but our server made sure to check in on us to make sure we were taken care of. If you're hungry, they have food trucks up front you can order from. I had a grilled cheese that was phenomenal! We also tried some loaded fries which were good also. You can go on a tour if you'd like. I didn't get to go on one, but I plan to the next visit.
google avatar

Yelp
The perfect Saturday outing! Learn something educational about the spirit distilling process and enjoy Texas craft bourbon! While the area/exterior is extremely industrial, the tasting room is swanky and rustic. You can enjoy the 30-minute tour, followed by food, whiskey/bourbon flights, and cocktails in "Ben's Den" on the 2nd floor. Tours are $10, but you can usually find a Groupon deal for group packages. Whether you're a bourbon connoisseur or novice, you'll enjoy your time here!

Rolando C.

Yelp
The tour was fun and i got a Manhattan that was really good but the food for the lack of a better word sucked...

Yelp
Gulf Coast Distillers has become one of my favorite places for a nice relaxed whiskey night. Edgar is the best! Always a good experience with him as our server. Drinks are great, food is yummy.. can't go wrong with absolutely anything on the menu. Good job guys! And yesssss keep those steak night Thursday's!

Yelp
HOW have I never been here before?!? SUPER cool venue, great bartender, delish food, and AMAZING bourbon! Beautiful tasting room with TVs/music, you can do tours and tastings... a hidden gem in Houston. A definite MUST SEE!!

Yelp
Wonderful place with craft drinks and delicious foods. Just a heads up there are some stairs to get to the upper level where the bar is located.

Yelp
Awesome date night or outing with friends. Take the tour and tasting, and definitely try out some cocktails while you're there - the bartenders are amazing.

Yelp
Highly recommend! Flights were good (though the mixed drinks were too sweet... ) and food was delicious and good value!

Yelp
We loved our bartender Nestor!!! Very Knowledgeable & we wished he would have been our tour guide! He explained everything to where it was easily understood! If Nestor isn't a guide, they are missing out on an opportunity for him to use his skills!!! We will come back 100%. Nestor... you need to be a tour guide!! Thank you for our experience!!

Yelp
INCIDENT :I have a disability and service animal. I was told there was elevator under the stairs. The elevator main power was turned to OFF. The power was turned back on but the outer door was locked to prohibit access to the elevator on or off. I had to crawl on my hands and knees with aid of service animal UP 2 FLIGHTS of stairs with no means to contact onsite personnel for assistance. I went to manager on 2nd floor after crawling up the stairs and told him to which he said I didn't push the button right. I said button or not the DOOR WAS LOCKED. He cked and thanked me for letting him know. I said I expect it to be unlocked when we leave. When I and another man with rolling walker went to leave approx 9:30 pm, elevator was still locked and we both needed to be assisted by other guests down the 2 flights of stairs. I later heard the establishment knew the elevator didn't worked and thats why it was locked. My husband was originally to attend but could not at last minute or there would be additional complaint filing for retired veteran who can not take the stairs due to knee disability. He would not have been able to crawl as I did on hands and knees up the 2 flights, which was humiliating. I do not know how the other man who required a standing rolling walker was able to get up or get down the stairs but I am certain it was just as unsafe and humiliating as it was for me and guests who assisted. If not for the once in a lifetime event being held there I wouldn't have climbed the stairs on my hands and knees and my husband would have had to wait for me to go in give respects then leave. I feel the facility is aware of the issue and is purposely letting the maintenance lapse and provides no notice that the lift is out or a means to communicate with onsite personnel.

Yelp
Friendly service, GREAT COCKTAILS and safe environment. Wonderful tour, we learned so much! The Pork Belly on anything - fries, grilled cheese, BLT - anything is my recommendation for food. If you have never tried it, TRY IT! The BBQ sauce is very unique, homemade in house - I need to get a bottle of it, if they sell it. Forgot to ask.

Yelp
Nice bourbon, reasonable prices, nice tasting room and great service. But the food was average at best.

Yelp
I came here with my bf to take the distillery tour. We had a very good time. Everything was very clean and the tour guide was very informative and answered our questions. At the end of the tour we got to try 120 proof, 60% whiskey. It was a bit too much for me, it burned my throat and tongue but my bf was glad to drink his and my sample lol. After the tour we did a flight tasting and I ordered a guava cocktail. The bartender was great, very personable and had good conversation, very attentive. Just a great bartender overall. I didn't catch his name, he was Latino so make sure you guys keep him on staff!!
google avatar

Angie G.

Yelp
My husband is definitely a connoisseur of Bourbon and his favorite was the 91 Proof! The flights are very reasonably priced and the food from the truck was ah-mazing!! I particularly loved The Beehive coctail, but it was really great that there are options for everyone.

Yelp
My coworker and I came here for a tour, back in November. We learned so much about the distilling process. Prior to the tour, we watched the extremely skilled bartender make some very elaborate cocktails. You need to stop here if you're looking for a nice strong drink and lovely people.

Yelp
Met Cory, the manager, was extremely friendly and helpful. He was kind enough to let us watch the Astros game! He also arranged for my friends and I to receive a plant tour. Julian gave us the tour, he was very knowledgeable of the process of the development of their whiskey and other products they produce, in addition to the history of the cbuilding. The drinks that Mike made for us, specifically our Old Fashions, and the BJ Collins were exceptional! Over all our experience was awesome! We will be coming back!!

Yelp
Awesome experience at Gulf Coast Distillers. Patrick was out tour guide and explained the process perfectly and even answered my question of the difference of brandy, bourdon, and whiskey. Edgar is the ultimate mixologist... offer multiple cocktail options and did a great job of turning me into bourbon lover.
