A Three-Day Road Trip Exploring Florida’s Spanish History

"Toast the end of your day at Oyster City Brewing Company before heading two blocks away to the 1907 Gibson Inn, which just underwent a major overhaul. At the hotel restaurant, The Franklin, order a dozen oysters, topped with Jack Daniels brown butter and hot sausage, before bedding down for the night."

Classic, they are still in the process of bringing the grand old beauty bake to her former glory, so some of our experience might differ, but you could definitely tell the finished product will be lovely. In the meantime it’s still a great stay, unfortunately the restaurant was closed the night we stayed but the bar was open, very nice classic bar. When we did get back to the room our ac was broken, the staff quickly found us a new room, stuff happens they fixed it all good. The main issue we had was the heavy smell of sulfur in the water, I understand this is an Apalachicola issue not a Gibson issue and they are working on it. If the water issue is addressed then I would definitely recommend the Gibson if your travels bring you through area.

We arrived following a long 9-hour drive from Lookout Mountain and were greeted by Ginny who was a delight, and after putting out luggage in our room we went to the Parlor Bar where we met a truly great bartender and then went to eat a scrumptious meal in the Franklin Café with a very attentive server. That’s all the good part.||We were a party of three adults (82, 80 & 50) it would have been nice if someone told us that our room would be on the second floor, Inn had no elevator but a very beautiful (but very long) staircase or that there was only one bed and that our 50-year-old daughter would have to climb a ladder to get into her rather tiny overhead bed. I am sure you think part of the charm of the Gibson Inn is the wrap around porches, and I would agree if the guest were courteous enough to go to bed and not sit outside your room and talk until 2:30 in the morning. We might even have gotten past that except when we went to take a shower, we could not get any water to come out of the shower head, at which point my wife insisted on leaving.||So, we packed up and went downstairs and informed the woman who was there that the room was unacceptable, the shower did not work and that we were leaving and asked that she find someone to bring down are to bags as I could not do it. Instead of doing that she began arguing with me informed me I would be charged for the room anyway and there would be early checkout cancellation fees and when I insisted, she take care of our luggage she stormed up the stairs and eventually brought them to our car.||I am a firm believer that the legal precedent of “if you eat the steak, you bought it; but if you send it back, for whatever reason, you do not.” We left because the room was unacceptable (noise until 2:30, ladder to tiny bed, no shower) we stayed on the June 28th and for that we are responsible, we did not stay on June 29th.

We has such a great experience at The Gibson Inn when a large group of us came for a girls' weekend. The Inn was great! We found the location to be perfect. The rooms were comfortable and very clean. The staff members were so friendly. Jocelyn was one of the managers working on the day of our arrival and she was accommodating with us changing rooms since there was a mix up. She was just lovely. Throughout the weekend, every staff member was wonderful and kind. We also enjoyed our time at the bar. The bar tenders were great. Can't wait to return!!

The Gibson Hotel is a wonderful place to spend time. We enjoyed room #313 during the Memorial day weekend. Well appointed and very comfortable. Sitting on the porch was so relaxing, we highly recommend a visit. But beware, don't buy the breakfast option. We arrived late afternoon and decided to try the food from the on-site restaurant, The Franklin. It's convenient. Despite the well poised staff, the food was awful. Aside from the excessively high salt content, the food is over priced and tasteless. Try the Chocolate Coffee House one block away. You won't be disappointed there.

I believe there is room for improvement in the dining area and overall stay experience. ||Specifically:||1. The menu would benefit from more options that support healthy dietary choices.||2. Service could be improved, as the wait time was longer than expected.||3. The food quality was below expectations — the dish I selected was undercooked, and the portion size felt small considering the price.||4. The wine selection could be expanded and refined to enhance the dining experience.||||Overall, the value for the price was average.||||The rooms were nice.

The bed was absolutely the best!! We loved the bathroom and the shower. Housekeeping was wonderful! The decor of the room, of the Buck Mansion, and of the entire property is charming and well done!||Lastly, special thanks for your hospitality and especially to Shannon at the Parlor Bar for making the best drinks (her Manhattan is incredible!), and to Abi (Abigail) for her perfect Cafe service. Please let them know!||We will be back!!!

Great, wonderful place to stay. The golfcarts do create a parking problem though.||The Franklin didn't seem as uptown as did five years ago. We missed the linen table clothes.||Were at the Gibson and ate at the Franklin once. We were at the Gibson to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary....It all worked out rather well. We plan on returning sometime this summer and over the Christmas Holidays for sure,

Amazing building, furniture and design. Beautiful veranda right outside balcony door. They are still working on the pool, which will be an amazing addition when finished. Wonderful bartenders and front desk staff! ||Love the double headed shower!!

Yelp
The WORST! The people who work at this hotel are impolite and awful to deal with. I called to ask the hotel to shift my arrival date by just three days. No response to my email so I called. The first person said no and hung up on me. The manager who was equally as rude said no, that the terms of my contract said I could not modify my reservation - despite calling many months in advance. I was not asking for a refund or a reduction in the rate. An increase in the per night rate for the difference was not offered. Do they know they are in the hospitality industry? The reviews are full of complaints about rude staff. Pay attention to them. Guests beware.

Yelp
Visited the bar in the lobby and Charlotte was our bartender. She was very personable and the service was awesome. The experience ended our day on a high note. Charlotte represents everything right about the Gibson Inn. Also, our room was very clean and comfortable! Great getaway.

Yelp
Darling place to stay. Food was great in the restaurant as well. Enjoyed our stay! Thank You

Yelp
locals avoid because of extortion prices at the bar. 8 bucks for a bottle of beer! And take note of Tripadvisor ratings for the Parlor restaurant. # 11 in Apalach behind the Piggly Wiggly deli, no less, but the MOST EXPENSIVE JOINT IN TOWN! AVOID.

Yelp
My wife and I stayed at the Gibson Inn on a Thursday and Friday night for a short trip to Apalachicola. I almost booked somewhere else, but chose this hotel due to all the great reviews. The Gibson Inn lived up to the hype!! The stay was nice, the room was nice, and the location was nice. The Gibson Inn is a charming, historic building that has been well taken care of and includes all the modern amenities you would come to expect from a top tier hotel. We stayed in a third floor corner room, which was very nice and spacious. The location was perfect - within walking distance of everything in downtown Apalachicola. The staff was friendly and helpful. My wife and I really liked the period decor throughout the property. It was very well done, with every detail thought of. There were two minor things that detracted from our stay. The Gibson Inn, although located within walking distance of everything, is right next to a major highway, Our room was right next to the highway, so the traffic noise was loud. Really loud. You can probably "fix" this by booking a room away from the highway. Surprisingly, though, I didn't here any guests. We walked out of the room one morning to hear our neighbor loudly talking on the phone. We could hear him in the hallway, but not in the room. The other thing is the pre-stay paperwork. I suppose they need to protect themselves, and have probably have had things stolen in the past, but all the paperwork I signed stating I wouldn't steal anything was a little much. Overall, I'm glad we stayed at the Gibson Inn. Walking around Apalachicola, can't really see where another hotel could beat it. We'll stay again if we ever make it back to the area!

Yelp
Wish I could have stayed longer! I was just passing through for the night and decided to stay at this amazing little spot and omg was it amazing! My photos do it no justice. It felt more like I was somewhere in the Carolina's than in Florida. The building is over 100 years old and you can just feel the history around you while walking through the creeping original wood floors. Plus it's got that great grandma's attic smell in the hallways. The rooms had all been recently renovated with a warm old coastal feel. If I lived in the area I would definitely be getting married there because the rest of the property is just beautiful and a perfect venue for a wedding or party ! On top of it all the staff is incredibly friendly everyone I met alway was helpful and greeted me with a warm welcome !!!

Yelp
Bed was comfy but we paid extra for bay view... all we saw was the bridge ramp! Forget sleeping, the door BANGS down stairs so loud , I went outside 2 times in the night to see if the rocking chairs were hitting the building! When I mentioned how horrible I slept the girl at the desk just confirmed the door was a nuisance! Not worth staying here!!

Yelp
Our bartender, Wayne, was amazing! He said he makes a killer espresso martini...and he is CORRECT. We came in for a quick drink but stayed for so much Please go seem him and his top notch service. It makes a bar away from home feel like home.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch a few days ago while visiting Apalachacoa and it was a lovely day to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful weather and have a nice lunch. I had the Monterrey Chicken Sandwich and a friend got the Club - we both enjoyed our meals on the outside patio and have no problem recommending them for a meal. The service was good - the only drawback was they were out of a few things, but the waitress advised us up front so it was not that big of a deal. Lovely spot to relax and enjoy the beauty of a lovely small town!

Yelp
We came down for a Saturday night to celebrate our anniversary. We stayed here over 15 years ago for a previous anniversary and loved our time. Staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. Our veranda room was comfortable and quiet. We enjoyed dessert at the bar (the baked chocolate chip cookie with ice cream was divine) and also had breakfast at The Franklin Cafe the next morning. The breakfast was delicious but the service was even better. I can't say enough good things about our short stay. We also enjoyed strolling through town partaking in a few beers at Oyster City Brewery and the High Five Dive Bar and some of the tastiest oysters ever at The Station Raw Bar. Definitely worth a stay in this charming town.

Yelp
Just an all around beautiful hotel, kind and attentive staff, great restaurant and bar, in a perfect location downtown. The draft beer from Forgotten Coast Brewing were fabulous and my dinners were excellent. I'll definitely recommend them to everyone and will definitely stay there when I go back.

Yelp
We stayed in the older section. The hotel is constructing a large section and has done a great job keeping architecture standards with new construction. We did not hear any construction noise. Yes the rooms are smaller but are fine and seem expected with an older hotel. The check in process was certainly different. I received an email and had to fill out all my information online, which was a repeat of what I entered when making the reservation. I then had to enter credit card info plus upload photos of my drivers license. Typically these items are checked in person when arriving at the hotel. The website said no information was retained after our stay, however we have no way of knowing that is the case. As other reviewers have said, the rooms are noisy. Opening closing doors etc are constantly heard. Very surprising to me was that the hotel elected to move furniture and seemingly deep clean wood floors in the room directly above us at around 8 am on a Sunday morning. The noise was incredible. I went upstairs to inquire what was happening. While the hotel staff was apologetic, they seemed legitimately unaware that people might be sleeping at this time of the morning or simply trying to enjoy their $300 room. On the positive side, the bar was great and the hotel is very well maintained in a good location. People were friendly. In the end we might consider staying again but it's not a certainty.

Yelp
If you are looking to step back in time yet in comfort this is your Inn. It has done a remarkable job of make this 121 year old building comfortable, clean and quiet. The beds are very nice and the staff is pleasant. A few things to know before you go. Apalachicola is a rustic fishing village. Small core downtown that has a few lovely eateries and coffee shop. It is a grand low key get away. If you are not a fisherman than bring a book

Yelp
Food too salty. Mushroom soup way too salty. The eggplant was over fried though the sauce was fine. I ordered the asparagus and they were way too old and big. Atmosphere was not good. They had music and it was good.

Yelp
My husband and I planned to stay at the Gibson Inn for 2 nights with our puppy. We wanted a vacation where we could relax, sleep late, and visit St. George Island. We chose this inn based on many good reviews, but should have paid better attention to the poor reviews. The city of Apalachicola is very slow and quaint, with many little shops and restaurants. The good... 1) check in was very easy, 2) room was clean, 3) they are pet-friendly. The bad... 1) The exterior and surrounding landscaping lacked curb appeal. In addition, it had very little grass for the puppy to do his business. There was a lot of dirt, grit, and sand. There are a few parking places along the street in front and side of the inn. 2) The room was very small, and smelled musty. They informed us at check-in that the room they had slated for us had a leak in the a/c, so we were getting an "upgrade". The "upgrade" was a room that has access to a shared porch. Someone wrote another review and said their room was the size of a postage stamp; and that is a great description. We wonder what the non-upgraded room was like. 3) The walls are paper-thin. We could hear someone next door "pass gas", and every time someone used the ice machine, or shut a door. So, it was difficult to get a good night's sleep. 4) They are doing construction on the property but did not disclose that when we booked the stay. Construction lasts all day. And it was literally right outside our door where they were using saws and hammering. We put up with it yesterday, but by the time it started this morning, we were tired from lack of sleep, and could not take one more day with the construction noise, so we decided to leave after staying one night. 5) I went to tell the front desk that we would be checking out early because of the construction noise. The desk attendant told me she would get my "folio" ready. When I returned with the keys, she gave me the receipt. I noticed we were charged for 2 nights. Upon asking for clarification, she said it was because I did not cancel within 48 hours prior to the arrival. I explained that we were leaving because of the construction noise, which was not any fault of ours. The attendant was unapologetic. She said her manager was in a meeting, but that she could have them call me to see if they can waive that cancellation fee. Of course, I have not received a call; and probably will not. For a place that has been in business for 116 years, you would think they'd have their customer service down to a science. I would not recommend the Gibson Inn to any of my friends or family.

Yelp
We've come here for many years. And the experience has fluctuated in terms of comfort. The beds are always wonderful. The rooms are always clean. The staff is always friendly. But if you're staying for several days, there is no iron in the room , there is a coffee machine, but it's espresso and very teeny cups, the air conditioning has a fan that blows straight on you and you wake up with the sniffles. There's construction next door and so you hear people arguing in Spanish and large noises starting fairly early in the morning. Also, what I think is the staff arguing in English. In the past, there is always been a little touches that were commiserate with the extra price that you pay for this historic inn. Our experience last year with the Frank And café was so disappointing in terms of service and what was offered we didn't go this year. There's plenty of other places in town.

Yelp
This evening three of my friends and I, two of which are visiting from overseas were looking to enjoy an evening of delicious upscale dining. We ordered: Franklin Salad nice cold greens with arugula, very nice fresh chevre and halved small tomatoes and a lovely vinaigrette Catch of the day Cobia very nicely seasoned, cooked well with a lovely lemony thyme sauce Broccoli Rabe was very large and not cooked through Apalachee Bay Pasta very nicely prepared Steak Frites Nicely seasoned over cooked steak, very roughly made chimichurri, nice fries but a mess for fine dining PAN-ROASTED RED SNAPPER & CORNBREAD PANZANELLA $42.00 Toasted Cornbread, Kalamata Olives, Blistered Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Pickled Red Onion, Garden Italian Vinaigrette This was the most confusing dish A Tuscan panzanella has soaked stale bread and a hodgepodge of veg wet with vinegar and herbs. I was interested in seeing what the southern take could be using a pan-roasted piece of fish and cornbread. Since this was listed under the entrees it was assumed to be a hot dish. The "Toasted Cornbread" turned out to be very hard one and a half square inch croutons. Far too large to eat and silly to try to cut without cracking and popping all over the table. The pitted kalamata olives were just tossed on the plate. Usually in an upscale restaurant charging these prices they take the time to crush the olives and remove the pits or at least slice the olives in half. The baby spinach, pickled onions and not so blistered tomatoes (try using the broiler) were very cold. There were no cucumbers. The Snapper was cooked perfectly with a wonderful crispy outside layer and moist flesh. Maybe try to sell it under Salads. For deserts we had sad boring choices...we ordered White Chocolate Bread Pudding dence Salted Caramel Cheesecake another weird one uncooked graham cracker crust and coddled filling, lumpy weird texture. I can only guess that the crust was not par-baked and the filling was poured in hot and then put in the freezer or cooler??? fail I suggest getting Pastry Chef

Elaine H.

Yelp
While the amenities were as expected, the staff was not. We had an issue we wanted to discuss as we were leaving but were told that the manager was off that day and would call "first thing" the next morning. She did not call at all. We called back the next day and were told that the manager was at lunch but would call after she was back on the clock. She did not. We called one last time the following day and were told that the managers were all in a staff meeting but would definitely get back to us. Still no return call. This deliberate effort to avoid discussing our issue was rude and unprofessional. We would never return.

Yelp
Such a fabulous quaint hotel. Great staff. Eclectic bar. Nice little restaurant. A hotel that time forgot. Great seafood town. A fishing hamlet with all kinds of people who have "dropped out" 1960s style. Super clean rooms. Just laid back!
google avatar

Yelp
For the quality and service, consider that this hotel has no rules. (For those of you wanting to bring your pets) We probably should have read up more on this Inn because a "sea view" room consists of looking at the coastal byway bridge and the Franklin County Courthouse.... Couldn't see much water. The architecture is definitely aged. The remodel Consists of reconstructed decor and half-ass repair. For the price I guess we expected more. Parking on the street. No valet. Friendly front desk staff.

Yelp
Such a beautiful inn quite unique in its on way. Definitely such a small town you should check out along your way put the panhandle.

Yelp
I have been wanting to stay at the Gibson and now we have - it was worth the wait! It was wonderful! We have stayed at rehabbed historic hotels before, but only one other was as satisfying as this one. This was charming but modernized in the right places (bathroom! linens! tv!). There's a white noise machine by the bed, and you'll appreciate it because there isn't any soundproofing between floors or in the halls. It's an old hotel, and that's part of the frustration and the charm. We were in a 2nd floor room, and the first night we slept so well. There were some ambient noises (white noise machine to the rescue!) but they didn't drag on into the night. It's a quiet town, and that's good because the Gibson is on the main street into Apalach. The second night, there were people in the room over ours, and they were noisy. They kept dropping or slamming something, and it was more than the noise machine could compensate for. But again, the noises didn't last all night (unlike some hotels I've been to) and most of the other guests were considerate. It's just clear that some people have never understood that noises carry and not to slam doors. We survived that fine. The staff at the Gibson are wonderful! Anything we needed, they supplied, and they were so polite and friendly. Some things to realize - there is no elevator. This circa 1907 hotel has stairs. Watch out for the top stair as you reach the 2nd floor from the lobby. The top step has a slope to it and it's disorienting at first. It's an old hotel that's been modernized - the bathroom in our room was beautiful and nicely appointed. There's a 'coffee maker' (for pods) in the room but it only makes a thimbleful (or seemingly) of water at a time. The front desk staff was kind enough to fill my travel mug with hot water (for tea) from the kitchen. The mattress was very comfortable but slightly too soft for even me - it enveloped us and while we slept well, it was hard to extract myself in the morning. We didn't eat at the Gibson, but we did enjoy several meals at downtown cafes. We look forward to returning and staying here again!

Yelp
Enjoyed lunch in the restaurant - fresh catch of the day was well prepared. The Service Team is super helpful - the bar area was enjoyable later in the day for drinks. I was able to camp out comfortably in the lobby area on some great sofas for conference calls

Yelp
We WERE pulling for you... I believe an appropriate title as I WAS pulling for this hotel. I left a review with lots of compliments and a few criticisms. The snarky response I received on Trip Advisor was very unprofessional and contained personal digs 1- there is a Bentley in the add, no Bentley. Their response " it's in the shop" . Nope, many other reviews contain the same question so is it false advertising or is it in the shop? If so, it's been in the shop for a while. 2- no pets allowed in the lobby unless it's a service animal. Sorry Gibson Inn that was an emotional support animal your employee had in the lobby not service animal. My animal and any animal can be emotional support without question. You can't have it both ways. 3- lack of hot water ? No response 4- no fans on the porch - No response 5- extremely small rooms - we love old historic hotels but postage stamp rooms smaller than NYC is not acceptable. For 399.00 a night??? Come on. Check out some of the rooms in other historic hotels -please. I have actually never stayed in a room that small in any historic hotel. 6- our dinner was unacceptable with an over cooked steak all coming at a high price tag 168.00 for two. No response at all. We are aware of the problems in the service industry currently but this needs addressing. The waitress was awesome and did her best to make our evening special. 7- we loved the staff here and love the area but do not pay the high prices this hotel is asking unless you plan to be disappointed. There is no breakfast offered in the hotel ( sugary prepackaged pastries only ) or anywhere close and the standards and rooms just should not command the prices they are asking. They are not concerned with making any changes and in addition sent an extremely snarky response to my review. I travel almost half the year and stay in hotels all over the south. This is only my second negative review in the last 3 years. The title of my review WAS we are pulling for you- and we were - but now we are not! If you don't learn anything you must learn the customer is right even if you don't agree.

Scott M.

Yelp
Always outstanding service here! The staff is wonderful. The old FL charm cannot be duplicated. This is a great place to unwind for the weekend.

Yelp
My husband insisted we stay at the Gibson Inn for his 68th birthday. I reserved a deluxe veranda room months in advance. A week before we arrived I called to confirm our room! When we arrived we were informed that our room had maintenance issues. We would be placed in an upgraded suite. The issues began when the receptionist told us the room she was placing us in was an upgrade but was less expensive and she would credit us an entire $10 a night. It was then I knew that the upgrade was a lie. Our stay then became a nightmare. The room was on the bottom floor with a small bathroom next to the party room! We informed the receptionist that the room was unacceptable. We were offered the Captains Room with no veranda. The room was nice despite the constant cars on the Main Street that kept us awake most of the night. The next morning I ask for a copy of my charges. There had been no $10 credit and the room we were in was being charged at the same rate as the original booking. Researching the website I uncovered that the room we were given was substantially cheaper than our booking. From this point on our interaction with this Inn was less than satisfactorily. We travel extensively and never have I encountered such a lack of customer service. The receptionist was not genuine and spent much of the day outside smoking. When we checked out she informed us that she had no idea how we had several pending unauthorized charges and was not competent with the accounting features. We were informed that the manager would handle our issues. Several days later I called inquiring about the incorrect charges. A manager (Steve) called me and left a message that we had been credited $154 for the downgrade. Never once did he apologize for the bait and switch of our room and apparent attempt to overcharge us. The inn was sparingly decorated for Christmas and upon our departure the lobby was covered with sheets as the ceiling was being scraped! This was a week before Christmas. The food was good and one evening we had a wonderful waiter that informed us he was leaving. Appalachicola has not recovered from the hurricane and many of the places we loved are closed. Most restaurants are also closed Sunday and Monday! The room was well decorated and we would have had a good visit if we were treated with respect. We came to the Inn because it was reviewed with praise in Guns and Gardens. We loved the Inn, but were disappointed in the staff. My husband and I have spent many years caring for those that suffer. All we expected is integrity and we did not receive that from this establishment. You never know who you are caring for so care for everyone as they were your family. It was not that the Inn was not adequate, it was the manner in which the situation was handled. May I recommend the Henderson Inn in Destin.

Gavin P.

Yelp
This hotel got my car towed, they never alerted me of my car getting towed either. The manager was insanely rude to me when I tried to question the situation; the cop placed her was also a jerk and towed my car for its "hitch being too far out." Just a reminder, I was pulled in the parking space all the way; the cop had no proof. Over the phone he made me want to throw my phone because of our unethical he was.

Yelp
Apalachicola area is a "breakfast desert", extremely Anti-breakfast. Had to cross the 7 mile bridge to even be offered any chance at breakfast. (Then only at a Mexican restaurant). What's up with that? The Gibson Hotel (very expensive) had no breakfast, and no suggestions. Doesn't Apalachicola know this is part of the reasonable expectations of the ordinary tourist? The night before I called restaurant after restaurant trying to find one with breakfast. (Websites and Google still think there's breakfast). Nothing. Here, we eventually had to get out of town to get meager fare. It's too long to still say "Covid", let's admit it's just the new, sad, reality.

Yelp
Great food and atmosphere. Super busy during dinner hours. I truly feel the staff is under paid and over worked. The servers during dinner looked so exhausted.
google avatar

Kim F.

Yelp
We stayed just one night here on our ride trip vacation along the Florida Gulf coast. Very convenient to everything in this little town. Due to COVID there was contactless check in and out with a code on the suite door. We stayed in king suite with a porch and rockers. Room appeared freshly remodeled with nice touches and great a/c. The bar at hotel was open and the bartender kept us happy with cold cocktails for happy hour. We'd come back!

Cindy A.

Yelp
Worst place ever! please don't ever eat there! We waited 15 for our waitress to come take our order, waited another 15 minutes for water, the 45 minutes we got our food which was ICE COLD, could not eat anything just plain disgustin!

Jack H.

Yelp
So I was told the hotel changed hands with out-of-town investors. That must account for the depressing interior makeover and the over the top prices in rooms, bar and restaurant. I know many Apalach locals and they no longer go there....

Yelp
Tucked into the splendid architectural oasis that is the historic town of Apalachicola on the pristine curve of the panhandle, the Gibson Inn is an iconic establishment. It is a true testimony to a by-gone era - when fishing (specifically oyster raising) and all the assorted industries that stemmed from seafood, were the dominant economic power in the area. Today, it feels like the sleepy towns of the panhandle rely more on tourism than the seafood that comes from the Gulf of Mexico. Alas, the Gibson Inn is a must-stop spot and worth an overnight visit. Its not luxurious - but it is comfortable. The rooms are well apportioned and maintained. The general atmosphere is one of southern charm and sleepy, laid-back laissez faire. The restaurant is a great local scene - complete with a wrap around porch and rocking chairs. The food is amazingly good and takes a page from more well recognized restaurants in southern "foodie" cities like New Orleans and Birmingham. There is a full bar and the restaurant offers a couple of different regional craft beers. The best part of our stay was sitting on the porch overlooking the bay with the bridge spanning into the distance and the cool evening breeze just picking up - sipping a couple of drinks and enjoying the southern hospitality. The Gibson is worth a trip and a must see place if you're in the area.

Yelp
Charming place. Loved the history . Big bathroom Very clean and staff friendly (albeit stressed from possible staffing shortage...just my guess). I could not get the Direct TV controller to work with the room TV. We were hoping to catch some news and March Madness. After 1/2 hour on separate attempts, I gave up. No room instructions. The pillows were huge ! Possibly a foot thick. I asked for a skinny pillow since I'm a stomach sleeper. No luck, the chamber maid said the Inn only has one size. (I caused by arching from head to trunk) cant be the only person waking up with a sore back.) This is a pricy Inn and I would have expected better. I will not go back. Sorry guys I did not get the value I had expected.

Yelp
Gibson Inn Happy Hour on a Friday night...was like bees round a honeypot. Very busy, very happy and vibey with an older set. Are there any young uns in Apalach? Great Old fashioned, we sat outside on the porch until it was time for our next stop for dining.

Yelp
Gibson Inn is one of the few remaining grande old wooden structure hotels left overs from the early 1900's. Actually, 1901 to be exact. It's well maintained, neat, clean, friendly and just being there takes your imagination back to an era and time you've read about, heard about, but never experienced. Staying at the Gibson is about as close as one can come to experiencing those days. The lobby is huge, the bar is grand, the and staircase to the upper floors wide. There are no elevators as in modern structures, but there are porches all over the place, huge porches with rocking chairs, both on the first and on the second floor. Just sitting back, rocking the time away with a cool drink in the heart of Apalachicola is a unique and different treat. The other good thing about the Gibson is its location which is within easy walking distance to the oyster/seafood restaurants on Water Street.

Yelp
If ever in the area- stay here! This is a BEAUTIFUL gem! I travel for work and am constantly staying in hotels. Gibson Inn is by far one of my favorites. It's a historic inn restored to time period beauty and grace. The staff are very professional and kind. The interior of the inn is dark woods, old pictures, a beautiful bar and the rooms are decorated in the same time period themes. The restaurant is FABULOUS! My server was Emily last night and she was a sweetheart- loved her! I ordered mussels and the cheese tray- off the chain good. If I could give the establishment more than 5 stars; I would! Go, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Excellent place to stay and enjoy Apalachicola. The Hotel was purchased last year and renovations are occurring. The place looks, and feels, awesome. The new owners are not sparing expense in this renovation. The marble and granite alone in the bathrooms are amazing. The rooms are decorated turn of the century(19th), with modern amenities. The beds are very comfortable and are 20th century mattresses . The restaurant is very nice. Great food and service. You must visit the bar and order their signature drink "The Gibsonier".. you will love it, especially while sitting along the wrap around porch watching the world pass by, listening to the local guitarist playing some Jimmy Buffet. Enjoy.

Yelp
0 stars! The door lock is broken & will not lock at all! We called the front desk, & the guy came up & couldn't get it to lock either. He then kept trying with a key & went & got the master key to try. How does that help us lock the room from the inside for safety & privacy? It didn't work anyway. The TV also wouldn't work & wasn't on the network or programmed to the remote. The clerk kept messing with the remote. I said it didn't matter if we were going to switch rooms. He said he didn't have permission to switch rooms. It's now past midnight, & he still can't reach anyone & won't swap our room to one that locks. We couldn't put our toddler to bed because the guy was in the room, & we kept thinking we were going to switch rooms. While the guy was trying to get the tv to work, our toddler had a bad fall & banged her head hard! The employee didn't even acknowledge her fall or care & just kept talking about the remote! What human does that? I said all I wanted was a room that locked, to put my baby to bed, & to be able to take a bath & go to bed. It was almost midnight by that point. We got here around 8 pm! We finally decided to pull the couch in front of the door for our safety. The arm of the couch was broken. You can tell other people have been pulling it in front of the door, also. They have no system in place for how to take care of problems. The clerk still won't move us to a different room! He kept trying to reach people to ask what to do, & we said, "It's midnight!" Also, the restaurant food was overpriced, small portions, & sub-par, dried-out fish with a waitress that just kept standing over me in my space. The hotel seemed nice at first. The old building is cool, but the people don't know how to run a hotel. It was a terrible experience for way too much money! Update: the clerk called us at 1 am offering to swap us to another guest's dirty room & that guest would swap to our dirty room with the broken lock! The clerk was rude. Bizarro world!!

Yelp
After following their stunning renovation on Instagram and having wanted to visit here for years, I finally made it. I enjoyed dinner and drinks two nights although I stayed at another inn around the corner. Unfortunately when I was visiting with an acquaintance (he being a guest of the inn) in the billiards room late night, the owner's wife came in questioning us. She asked where I was staying and I informed her. She then proceeded to chastise and degrade me in front of the others by telling me to come back when I can "afford to stay there." Excuse me? I just spent $900 for two nights at the Grand Galvez in Galveston. Further, although not a guest I still spent my monies at her establishment. I brushed it off and told her I was going to a Garden & Gun magazine event in Pensacola -- she then asked if I actually bought the ticket for it. Yes, you ratchet grandstanding jerk, I did buy the $850 ticket for the event. What this woman lacks is tact and any form of respect toward guests. She desperately needs to check her ego because had it not been for her husband's financial situation, she would be in the exact financial position as she assumed me to be in.

Yelp
Three stars ~ let me explain! The Gibson could be a Five Star or, as I rated it, a Three Star. I gave it three in comparison to what I perceive as the standard hotel of our day for the average traveler. So, on the Five Star side, this is an adorable, historic, perfectly located hotel in downtown Apalachacola. On the three star side, no in-room coffee. Provided breakfast is a selection of pound cakes, croissants, and yogurt (yummy, but I'm so trying to be healthy ~ can you throw me a banana or orange?) You may obtain a hair dryer from the desk on check-in, but there's not one in the room. No pool. This is an OLD hotel located very near the water ~ so.... When you first walk in your room (air conditioned, but no central air) you may notice a musty smell. No worries, your nose adjusts quickly. No true designated parking, but street parking is free (though on a holiday weekend, maybe chancy). That's all of the "negative." Now ~ why SHOULD you stay here? As mentioned before, location!! You can walk to all of downtown Apalachacola from the hotel. The staff here are knowledgeable and oh-so-hospitable. They'll get that hair dryer for you lickety split (just don't ask for afternoon decaf coffee at the bar ~ that brought a chuckle.) Speaking of the bar ~ it is certainly the nerve center for the hotel. The hotel offers murder mystery weekends ~ check out their website for info. They look like fun. Handsome Hubs and I have reached the point where we consider rocking in the chairs on the wraparound deck in a rainstorm a romantic way to spend an afternoon hour or so, so the Gibson fit our needs perfectly. Our bottom line? For the price, I would have appreciated a smidge more modern convenience. I'm torn ~ this hotel is exactly what it says it is. Maybe I'm too cheap. If you're loaded, don't have children on this trip (mine would have been bored, destructive, or annoyed at the difficulty in recharging electronics) and a claw foot tub makes you happy ~ this is your place. It has history aplenty!

Yelp
For the past few years, we have been staying at the Gibson Inn whenever we pass through on a motorcycle trip. The hotel has always been clean and comfortable. The mattresses could probably be replaced in the rooms, but that isn't a dealbreaker. We haven't been to the restaurant, but the bar has some great specialty drinks. For motorcyclists, there is a parking pad off the street. Another great feature that we love is Salem-the 7 year old cat that runs the place!

Yelp
This is our second stay at the Gibson and the first stay was amazing. We have told countless family members and friends to stay here and have bragged about our first experience. I wish our stay this time would have been the same. This time we stayed in the Buck Mansion and the room was amazing and spacious. We didn't have any issues with the room, but the bar staff on the other hand.. We were the youngest looking people in the bar which seemed to cause huge issues. The bartender came to check our IDs and instead of asking for another bartender to verify, she proceeded to pull over every other bartender and waitress and talk about how she thinks we have fake IDs and that she doesn't trust us, all while we can hear her and the other staff members talking to her are staring at us and making us uncomfortable. Other patrons heard as well and were staring. This went on with 5 other staff members. Finally, after 10 minutes of no one talking to us but ABOUT us, another bartender asked for our IDs and verified they were real. We got our drinks and I'm almost 90% sure they were all syrup since the bartender was telling us that she was suspicious of us since we live in Tallahassee which is "the capital of fake IDs" and that she has had a fake ID in the past. Well I or my husband never have, nor have any reason to as we are both over 25. Meanwhile we just moved to Tallahassee from PA to work, are both over 25 years old, and were just at a restaurant and bar and had 0 issues. After this we were ignored the rest of the night while the other bartender was going to a table of older looking people asking if they wanted shots and refills on their waters. We had to stand at the bar for 20 minutes just to get someone to cash us out, and while doing so they still managed to ignore us and talk to a clearly over served customer about all the drinks he got until they finally slammed our bill down on the bar. Again, I do not have any issues with having my ID checked and verified multiple times as I understand the bartenders need to protect themselves and it's the law. I have an issue with being talked about loudly and made to feel uncomfortable, paying $25 for two drinks that were all grenadine syrup, and being ignored AFTER having 3 employees check our IDs. Maybe they should worry a little more about over serving customers, as we heard others talking about how drunk they were and who was going to drive. So disappointing after the great stay we have had in the past.

Yelp
A historic hotel without amenities of a modern one, but with complementary WLAN. We got a nice and cosy little room, it was clean. The breakfast was, let's say, rudimental. Our tea bag has left only the taste of the bag it's self, we could have been the first guests singe a long time ever drinking tea? So all in all the pricing was high related to the equivalent value!

Yelp
This was our first experience with a bed and breakfast type place (though this is truly more just an old hotel). The staff was welcoming and the room was clean. The porches were gorgeous and the bar area was a nice place to grab drinks with a local, old-time feel. The bed was soft and super-comfy. It was also fun to have actual keys to our rooms! The cons: Free breakfast was nothing to write her about. Subpar coffee, store-bought bagels. Bathrooms need a remodel- wished the sink was inside the room, etc. No deep sleep here, with the creaking floors and slamming doors. Overall, a fun experience steeped with history.

Yelp
Great place to stay and meet the staff and make new friends. The staff aims to please. The prices are reasonable. Beds are great and linens nice. Great toiletries! Hairdryers and ironing boards are on the second floors. Made lots of new friends here and enjoyed our stay!

Yelp
We went this year for Thanksgiving. Had reservations in advance, after they said they would have a Turkey dinner and all the fixings...they did not know price point so, we booked. We were told it would be a buffet...it was not. We got an average plate of food, no cranberry sauce or sweet potatoes or anything out of the ordinary, but, it was ok. We were glad they even did Thanksgiving this year, and are thankful for their staff and all those who put it together! The price, per meal, minus the bottle of wine was a bit much though. It was $46 plus pp. Again, all things considered, we hope the staff got a bit of this money, since they did offer up to work a holiday. We would not do it again, though unless it was a buffet with a bit more going on. Hopefully, next year they will have some competition on Turkey day!
