Best Totchos and Loaded Tots in Portland | Eater Portland

"Gigantic Brewing’s all-ages Hawthorne pub is the brewery’s only location that serves food. Totchos purists will approve of Gigantic’s rendition — served with cheddar and jack cheese, pickled jalapeño, olive, tomato, onion, salsa, sour cream, and guacamole. Tater Tot fans can find other flavor profiles to chow on, like General Tso’s tots (General Tso sauce, scallion, cilantro, pickled Thai chile), Cheesy AF tots (grilled cheese sauce, cheese, scallion), and buffalo tots (buffalo sauce, ranch, gorgonzola, scallion)." - Janey Wong

Google
The tierra del stout is phenomenal and really tasted just like the Mexican hot chocolate I grew up on. 10/10 recommend

Google
At the brand new very highly anticipated Gigantic on Hawthorne. Love Gigantic beer! Says a lot about Gigantic when a city that does beer on the level of Portland is so excited about one new place opening! Plus this is their first location (of 3) that has a kitchen. Gotta say the food is really good too! Flaeskasteg Pork Sandwich (Carlton Farms roast pork loin with crackling, braised red cabbage, remoulade, dill pickle) with French Fries and a Sassy Pony Juicy Pale Ale. Also pictured is, The International Caramel Coffee Stout & Space Brontosaurus IPA (collaboration with Ecliptic) Gigantic has turned their kitchen over to El Viejon. I ordered the Flautas de Pollo and the Birria Ramen (Mexican/ Asian fusion) and an LP Stout. This was absolutely delicious.

Google
Great brewery with plenty of variety in food and drink options. They have an awesome terrace to hang out. Beer selection we tried was delicious (though I wish their sour was even more sour!) and the tater tots were killer. Staff were incredibly friendly and nice. Had tons of fun at this establishment and would gladly come back!

Google
A great spot for a drink and delicious eats. We went here for nacho week and if the 7 places we went to the nachos here were the best! Also had a fabulous beer recommended by the bartender. Outdoor seating and kids allowed. Nice place, great service

Google
Pretty solid spot! Went in because I had a couple gift certificates I won in a raffle. A very open, clean space. Tons of seating. Went in for Sunday happy hour which they have decent prices for. Service was friendly and informative. Grabbed the "seasonal" burger because they were out of the fried chicken sandwich. Burger was cooked well and the flavors came together nicely. Also grabbed the General Tso fries, which were...eh. I think I has expecting a little more? They could use a little more sauce I think? Maybe that's just me though. They kinda just had a really light drizzle on top. Grabbed a cider which is always great. Overall, a pretty chill spot. Will visit again if I'm in the area.

Google
This bright and airy space is welcoming, has a/c and the staff are super nice. The food is good and they have lots of gluten free options. This will definitely be my go to lunch spot when I'm Hawthorne from now on.

Google
Wonderful atmosphere, great service. Food was really fun, they had a pop up when we were there. The beer was decently good

Google
The sandwich of the week was about half the size it was advertised to be and arrived at our table cold. A twenty ounce cup of Sprite will also run you three dollars. Still, this can be overlooked with the added context that the house was slammed with business and seemed to be understaffed. Service was excellent, but the flavor was lacking. Decently filling!

Yelp
This is a really cute looking brewery that's walkable from our house, so we've been a few times. I'd say the beer is good, not great. We wish they had a hazy IPA on tap, but there's a fun rotation of on draft options otherwise. The decor and branding of their beer is fun and interesting to look at. The food is also pretty solid- the burger is *great* and the tots are pretty good (though the toppings tend to be sparse and disappoint). The kitchen is rather slow, so definitely plan to show up not hungry and enjoy a beer or two while you wait for food. Overall, I'm not rushing back to this place, but if you're in the neighborhood and the mood for a burger and a beer, it's a solid option that I wouldn't turn down if offered.

Yelp
I stopped in to grab a drink on a week night and the place was pretty empty. The bartender was nice and the drink was pretty good. It was $9 for a 9oz pour which I think is about par for the course in the area. The space is pretty big and can accommodate large groups. Parking is street parking, which can be difficult at times. They do allow minors up until a certain time.

Yelp
Like many people we were driven here because of Burger Week so we thought we'd stop in for a quick bite and a beer. Service was okay, not particularly friendly or anything, but not rude. Beer was okay, but you can get that anywhere. Burger was pretty meh. My friend noted that it was particularly small though, especially compared to what most people are doing. If you're trying to lure people in that got the job done, but if you want them to return it was unfortunately a fail. Felt a lot like a cafeteria too, which was not really comfortable. Can't say I'd return.

Yelp
Popped in here as they open earlier on the weekend. Do want to come back for food, but today was just beer. Very friendly bartender. Place quite empty. Kinda sterile looking. The usual array of beers, though the one i had today--a beautiful day in the neighborhood--not up to their usual standards,

Yelp
Loved this place. Good food, good deals, and fun stuff going on! Trivia nights, Card Game Tournaments, all sorts of stuff! Reasonably accessible for wheelchairs, with large bathrooms and decent aisles (occasionally crowded, but with movable items). The tables are all booths or high tops, so best for chairs to access the end of the booth (or transfer if you can.) Google said they have a parking lot, but they do NOT, so be aware of that. Street parking is ... reasonable depending on the day/time. Staff was fantastic!

Yelp
Gigantic's newest location on Hawthorne! Great ambiance indoors - modern, fresh, and clean with lots of booths and large high top tables. Picnic tables on the side of the building for when it's nice out. There was no parking lot, street parking is ok here. We came on a Wednesday around 6 and the place filled up. We sampled a variety of beers, including several IPAs and a sour. They also had bottled beer to go for around $6 for a 16 oz. We also ordered food, sharing the smash burger and fried chicken sandwich. Both were good with fresh toppings, not too large of portions. They do their fries and tots well! Beware though that any sauce you want will cost you 75 cents. Order at the bar and they'll bring out your food. We didn't have to wait too long. Overall, we had a good experience and will probably come back sometime for the Tuesday night burger and beer special.

Yelp
Beautiful new location. We stopped by for burger week. I love the brand and the decor is simple clean and cozy. I was impressed how organized they are. It was busy we ordered at the bar got a number and had our burger in about 10 minutes. The burger was delicious and looked exactly like the photo and as described. We also had one of their flagship IPAs. Very impressed we will be back!

Yelp
I went for Sandwich Week 2024. If this is them putting in a special effort, I don't think I'll bother going for regular business. Not even the tots were good.

Jacob B.

Yelp
Hell yeah. Why do I need 85 characters Isn't this enough ? I had a good time ? The beer is good.

Yelp
Great place, new location for an awesome brewery. When we visited they were serving from jockey boxes while awaiting inspection on their cold box. Still, all the great Gigantic beers will be available in this updated building. Plus, bottles of their special beers like the Most Most Premium RIS variants! Super nice bartender, servers, surroundings. Loud because of the acoustics, but nice mix of booths, high bar tables, and bar indoors. Haven't tried the food, but looking forward to trying it based on the descriptions and the looks from what was coming out of the kitchen. Worth it for the beer alone, though.

Yelp
Delicious! The Japanese Chicken Sandwich is sooo good! Highly recommend! Great neighborhood gathering spot!

Yelp
Pleasant experience on a Sunday lunch with friends. Came to this new location to check out the lunch menu. Offhand, I've got to say that we all exited happily and plan to come back. Aside from a small menu snafu - I got chicken instead of tofu (which I didn't mind) - food was all good.

Yelp
Had the burger week "burger". The meat patty was 1/10th size of the picture in the add. Not impressed, but need to remind myself food advertising isn't what actually get. But I did expect a burger larger than a silver dollar.

Yelp
Taking a class across the street from Gigantic, they highly recommended them for dinner. So glad they did! It's a very clean, hip restaurant. Nice menu selections. I had the grilled cheese and it is honestly the best I've ever had. I added bacon. Tots were cooked to perfection! My husband and I spilt a dinner salad while waiting for our food and it was a really nice sized for 2 people. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This is my second review but I've been here several times and this is my second outdoors and it is still a great place to come for beer and dinner! I'm glad they don't show sports on TV. It is great to come for the food and beer and there are plenty of places to watch sports! I hope they keep doing well and providing great food and beer! Recommend occasionally trying new beers and special foods

Yelp
This new space is awesome, super spacious and the beers are great per usual.... But we came in, sat at the bar and asked for the blazers game to be put on. There was nothing on the TV at the time and they told us they didn't want to put it on - for no reason other than they didn't want the space "to become a sports bar". Super disappointing and we would've stayed for quite a few drinks had they been accommodating! 3 stars for service.

Justin L.

Yelp
Fun place for a pint and some pub food. The double smash burger went down a little too easily for me but it was really solid. Beer is always solid but I'd like another WC IPA option but that's just my preference. Pipe wrench has held up for years and still is special for me. My wife and I will be back.
google avatar

Charlie K.

Yelp
Awesome local brewery with indoor and out seating. Have not tried the food but a solid pub menu. About a half dozen beers on tap (plus a cask engine for the stout!) when we were there about 5 days after opening, but great service while we visited and a welcoming vibe inside. Will be back!

J J.

Yelp
I have gotten spoiled to Portland bars having great food. Unfortunately, this place serves frozen store bought food. They charge like an amusement park with actual worse food than a basic Six Flags. Go for the beer, but eat somewhere else.
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
Great beer (Sassy Pony IPA was a fave) and pretty good bar food (smash burger was solid). Chill atmosphere, will be back.

Tyler C.

Yelp
Came in and service was bad, they said they don't play march madness very rudely. Our totchos came and they were cold.

Yelp
A great, comfy neighborhood spot with a generous tap list and and several good food options. The staff are friendly and welcoming. A gem in the making!

Yelp
Ordered a chicken sandwich got threw half of it to release the chicken was still pink I hope I don't get sick
