The Best Irish Pubs in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Right on the border of Glendale and Montrose is Gilligan’s Irish Pub. It’s frequently busy and often lovingly referred to as a local dive bar complete with pints, a jukebox, DJs, dart board, and blue pool table. This Glendale bar has no kitchen, pop-ups regularly appear, including a local taquero." - Mona Holmes

My boyfriend and I visited on a Saturday night and had an amazing time. Arriving around 9 PM, there were about ten other people present, creating a perfect vibe—quiet enough for a conversation, but with great music selections. The environment was fantastic, featuring darts, a billiard table, and a patio. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks. The bartender made me a mixed drink with tequila, which she called her "cactus cooler." It was delicious and barely tasted like alcohol, yet it definitely gave me a buzz. My boyfriend ordered whiskey, and they filled his drink to the brim, unlike other places that fill the cup halfway. The bartenders were super welcoming, and we had great conversations with them. We will definitely be returning.

No Stars if that was an option. Checked out this spot on St. Patrick's Day with a friend. I arrived prior to my friend and sat at the bar, he arrived shortly after. We waited for about 30 mins without being greeted. Never told, we'll be with you shortly...Nothing at all, never served. My friend did get the attention of 1 bartender and she gave a non-verbal response putting 1 finger up which meant wait a min, I guess. I'm assuming but we strongly feel it was a race thing, my friend and I are not the same race. We noticed a man arrived after we did, sat at the bar and served immediately. We got the message loud and clear and left. The feeling alone was horrible.

Checked out another local pub, I was completely enchanted by Roxy, the Bartender, more of a mom to the neighborhood regulars and, dare I say it, a true tavern matron from those D&D games. In her 20 years she went through the two owners, having been let go in the crossover, she was brought back to roust the unsavory elements of the pub and to restore order. She has done so and created a little haven for the locals. I hadn't been here for 15 years, and she remembered me 😉 There is pool, darts, the jukebox, which played stuff from this decade, but of course, you haven't truly been in a hometown bar until Toby Keith is belting out "I love this bar." Like he has brain damage, but that anthem, sung by regulars and travelers passing through winking and pointing and crooning, well it's a camaradrie that is sweet in it's loyalty and stamina. The locals who inhabit this bar work in the biggest industry we have, and are affected by the strike. Roxy, the true treasure here in this gem of a local spot, was making a comfy amount of money as a Business Manager for a Corporation. She retired, and now she runs Gilligan's 4 nights a week ❤️

My friend took us in here and I was hesitant but I really enjoyed the atmosphere. The drinks were delicious, the staff and patrons were all so friendly. We will certainly be back!

Yelp
Great dive bar in my area. I had no idea La Crescenta had bars and was glad to run into this spot. Im not a fan of dive bars because like cocktails but this spot made me appreciate dive bars. Cheap strong drinks and great service.
google avatar

Wade J.

Yelp
Great bartenders, great service. Super affordable strong drinks. It's a simple man's bar, if you want a hand made curated cocktail for $18 go somewhere else.

Yelp
I love you Gilligans my home away from home nothing better than the vibes in this shitty dive bar.

Yelp
Popped in w wifey for St Patrick's Day. Drinks are fairly priced. Friendly bartenders. Somehow befriended a few fellow Raider fans. Very friendly vibe. Crowd was around 50+ age wise. I will definitely be back.

Arby M.

Yelp
Excellent small cozy and very friendly bar in La crescenta Been there once and will definitely will come back very often living in the area and having such a nice bar is a blessing the staff are very very polite and friendly. Everything was great .

Yelp
Very friendly staff and good vibes. Karaoke night is loads of fun as well! Everyone's having a good time.

Yelp
Friendly staff and atmosphere. Drinks are inexpensive. Feeling safe there. No bar brawls or crazy people

Yelp
This place is a dump. One star is strictly because is is close to my house. It is weirdly wide open and uninviting. And yes, there is always trouble here. The first time I was here, the floor was covered in water. Water from the toilets in the ladies room running over. Gross. We did not stay. The second, and last time, my husband got sick from the draft beer. Which means either the lines are dirty or the glasses are dirty. Neither would suprise me because the entire place seems dirty. Like, many of the establishments in LC, this place has so much potential and just seems to have a "we dont really care" vibe.

Yelp
Met a friend here for a couple of drinks. Mostly locals dive bar, friendly crowd. beer is cold and good pour on other drinks. If your looking for a bite to eat, not here! There might be a guy who makes tacos, burritos and quesadillas on certain days.

Yelp
I really like Gilligan's. Two years ago if you asked me, I probably would've said no, but, last couple of years, it's been our local spot. The bartenders serve up great stiff drinks. The bar is low-key and doesn't get overly crowded and obnoxious. The crowd are mostly locals. They have one pool table, but we usually come here to play darts. There's more space in between darts boards than Fantasia and Leo's who only has one board. The bar area is a bit dark, but it's spacious and has nice booths along the wall to hang out.

Yelp
There are not enough words to describe Gilligan's. Nearly from the 1st moment I walked into Gilligan's I was made to feel welcome & at ease. I love dive bars, Gilligan's is the best I've been in__bar none. The bartenders & locals make the place what it is---my home away from home.

Yelp
I went to Gilligans last night for the first time in my life. It was genuinely one of the worst experience I have ever had at a bar. For one when we came in we were given no service for at least 30 min. To make things worse the bar tender then refused to service us drinks for walking into the bar with someone we just met 15 before walking in, and when they asked said person to leave he did. The bartender was extremely rude about it and it was apparent he did not care at all about costumer service. I will never be going to this terrible bar again and I will make sure to tell everyone I know how terrible and poorly managed this bar is. If I could I would give it negative ratings.

Deborah W.

Yelp
I would prefer to be at a bar that serves both food and alcohol. But then again, this place has good vibes regardless. I'll try to come back and revisit this review the next time I step into Gilligan's. Just please, add some tasty food to the menu! :)

Yelp
I love it A dog friendly dive bar is a dream come true. Cool humans also who work there.
google avatar

Kevin R.

Yelp
Really cheap drinks, but usually filled with some of the worst from the neighborhood. I've seen some fights break out here and there are the regulars that leave stumbling to their cars every day by 6 pm. Wouldn't recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
There is a few bars you can walk into in La Crescenta and make / remake friends without judgment. This is one of them. I can only really count 3 bars I would even consider visiting in the area: Basin 141, The Crest, and Gilligan's. This one is home for me - not so classy, not so trashy, but mostly locals looking for a cheap drink.
google avatar

Yelp
Just my type of place. The bartenders aren't pushy, or all over your face. Good tunes.

Yelp
There is not a lot to say. No food? Oh well. I went for a beer. There are plenty of places nearby. Locals? If you're looking for nightlife, go outside La Crescenta. People are great. Someone crockpotted meatballs at a table on our first visit. I was eating one 2 minutes upon arrival. Someone I had never met before told me to dig in and I did. The previous words I speak are not important. Cold, beautifully priced pints of Stone and Eagle Rock IPAs are why we go. If you need a cold beer. Go. Don't go with expectations of an epic night out. You won't find it. Go for a good pint with someone you like. Or by yourself. You'll get it here.

Yelp
Certain days and times of the day, this bar can be pretty creepy. For instance, I came here with my sister on a Saturday afternoon and it was a little scary. Not scary in a unsafe kind of way, but scary in the way that you actually see the people who drink in bars during the afternoon, and you feel like that could be your future, should you too continue to drink in bars on Saturday afternoons. Even having experienced that, I still love this bar. The owner is the bomb! My favorite bartender, Amber, is the best, and they have an awesome jukebox. Add in $3 beers on Thursdays (which happens to be the one night Amber works) and you've got the ingredients for one great bar. It also doesn't hurt that this place is a 4 minute drive from my house. I knew I was going to love Gilligan's after the first time I came in with a girlfriend. We had a blast and like I said, everyone who works there was super friendly. Steve, the owner, even gave us $10 to put in the jukebox. But when we came back, 2 weeks later and both Steve and Amber greeted us by name, I was completely sold. There are a few old "regulars" who can get a little too friendly, but I think that can be said with any bar.

Yelp
I began frequenting Gilligans on Wednesday nights when it opened. If you know anything about me, you know that I am a karaoke junkie and I go anywhere I can belt out tunes with my fellow addicts (and the audience of folks who can stand listening to us). I prefer a bar that is... less than crowded. I'm not looking for the hot spot. And Gilligans is not the hot spot but it gets a decent crew. The Wednesday night bartender Ingrid is super adorable and sweet as pie. Seamus hosts karaoke and there's a pool table and darts for those who prefer a less embarrasing activity. There's a smoking patio in back where you can get a nic fix. Downsides, the big open space seems a little cold, no food (although Seamus cooks sometimes), and the toilets in the ladies seem to have trouble flushing but all in all, good times, good people, and only like the best karaoke krew in the Greater LA area.

Yelp
I was expecting a lot more from this place. Nothing particularly Irish about it except the name. I was hoping for a good selection of Irish beer or whiskey, a beautifully crafted wood bar, some music that involved bagpipes, maybe even some Irish food, the things that one thinks of when "Irish Pub" is advertised. This bar isn't much different than the rest in the area. The remodel was well done. Everything was nice and clean. The staff was very nice and prices were reasonable, I just wish this place was a little more themed.
google avatar

Jose M.

Yelp
Perfect dive bar. Always goes people there. The bartenders are nice. The juke box is awesome. Drinks are decently priced. I've never had a problem meeting new people there. If they're 25 or 55. People are chill.
google avatar

Yelp
I enjoyed this place a lot when I went with a couple of friends. The keg blew so she gave me half a beer for free, then quickly changed it and brought me a new one. She was super sweet. And they had all kinds of games out on a table to play which was super fun and different. I haven't played Jenga since I was a kid! That was really cool. Decently priced. Super laid-back which I love! Definitely added to my list of places to go in that area.

Yelp
Driving around Montrose looking for a bite to eat I stumble upon this place, however I noticed rather quickly that they do not have a kitchen/make their own food (you can have food delivered to the bar/bring your own). With that said this is a neat bar just outside of the shopping district area. The bartenders are friendly and so are the patrons of the bar. The bar is full alcohol and has a decent selection of beers/liquor. There is a small billiard table there, and surprisingly it has really nice cloth. There are a few spots where the walls will impede your shot but otherwise it is pretty open. I did not venture out back, but there appeared to be a nice patio back there as well. A nice spot to stop by for a few beers and meet some of the local LaCanada-LaCrescenta folk. They have Karaoke on Wednesday. I think this place would be an interesting place for an open mic venue.

Yelp
Great Pub. my friends and I always stop by to have a couple drinks whenever we want to meet up and catch up. A really Nice relaxe vibe
google avatar

Erika E.

Yelp
It's a fine bar - but really when I think 'Pub' I think grub. None here. Sunday is quite. The floors are nice and so are the bartenders.
google avatar

Andrew D.

Yelp
This place is exactly what I was looking for. Nice bartenders that remember you, cheap drinks, regulars that are friendly. I will go here again and again without thinking twice. It's off the beaten path a bit and there's no sign outside but don't let that fool you. There's a healthy crowd inside, cold beers on tap, and a stellar liquor selection that won't break the bank. A+ bar.
google avatar

Wayne S.

Yelp
If you sit outside, beware the falling figs and leaves. Adds an element of suspense to your visit! Good coffee, lovely selection of gf pastries, great for groups!
google avatar

Emily A.

Yelp
This place isn't very Irish and everytime I have gone it's fairly empty...usually my friends and I were the ones filling up the place. Most of the other people I see there are smokers, so they are always outside on the patio instead of inside. The bartenders are very chatty and friendly and they make good drinks. It's very clean. Sucks that they don't offer food. This is the type of place to go to when you want a good drink and a calm night. Nothing crazy seems to happen here.
google avatar

CJ L.

Yelp
Consistent late night opening. After midnight you are crawling over a beer, this is the place.
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
Awesome local pub. Nice vibe, welcoming folks, reasonable drinks, can't complain. Lived here in the area for years but only started coming here recently. Roxanne, Stevie, Ashley and Andy are really really nice people..... Unpretentious bartenders that make you feel like staying , drinking and chilling. Glad we took a chance and stopped in.
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
Dive bar. Hardly anyone there on a Saturday night. Drinks were pricy, and nothing special. It was fun that they had a pool table and we could pick our own music. Wont go back.
google avatar

Alan D.

Yelp
Cheap beer is hard to find these days. Along with good crowds and good peple. This place other than Gilligan's is my go-to. Locals, good times, and no worries. Irish pub to the max.

Tiffany K.

Yelp
Came by after work some relaxation and turned out to have a lot of fun! Staff and the regulars were very friendly and the beverages were nicely priced. Will be back in July for a friends birthday party. Andy and my new bar crush Lola were so nice !!!!!!!

Yelp
If you sit outside, beware the falling figs and leaves. Adds an element of suspense to your visit! Good coffee, lovely selection of gf pastries, great for groups!

Yelp
Gilligan's!!! Best bar in Crescenta Valley and beyond! The bartenders are awesome but nobody is better than Roxy!! She is amazing! Play pool, shoot darts, sing karaoke with Gina, hang out with friends (and occasionally a few pups), dance if ya feel the groove, Andy will hit the lights for ya! All the "regulars" know everyone and welcome you as if you're one of them. Always a great time!

M M.

Yelp
SHADEY TRASHY BAR. the phone # on their recipients doesn't even work. The bartenders are awful, slow service. They stand around a talk crap instead of serving drinks. You will either get hardly a shot in a drink or they grossly over pour. No consistency what so ever. The bartenders need some class and to take a class on being bartenders. Oh and THEY STEAL! they added and extra $5 to my tip on my bill. I saved my recipient and had to call my bank about the fraud. Complete bs bar, why waste your time. Such a shame because it used to be awesome, the bartenders used to be great. Went totally down hill.
google avatar

Brandon R.

Yelp
I like gill for the good food. Cool environment. And beer. It's my hangout spot. It's the bomb digity. Pedro the cook is awsome. Sometimes hot girls. Try an orange julius or the scotch scotch scotch scotch

Yelp
Gilligans is an Irish Pub as much as McDonalds is a Scottish restaurant. It's pretty much a local bar with a nice coat of green paint on the walls. I love local bars, dive bars and places to grab a drink and talk to the locals....this one however left me feeling a bit weird.. We walked in late on a Saturday night and It looked like the people in there mostly knew each other and were having a good time. The bar tenders were cute and got my drinks quickly. Usually at these kind of bars I like to mingle and chat with people but it just wasn't happening. Some weren't too receptive to the concept of drinking and socializing with strangers ( like in a bar!!!) and others were just in a world of their own. I want to think that if the place was more crowded that you could bump into people and start a conversation. There are two small TV's in the place so I dont think its a big hangout to watch sports...and there's no food. So if you plan on going there for the long haul...eat before hand! If I were to give Gilligans another chance I would go there with 5 or more people for a few round of drinks then go somewhere else for the rest of the night.

MD O.

Yelp
High hopes when they first opened but... Trashy bar. Doesn't even rate as a "dive" bar (check out Avignone's down the street for that classic vibe). My buddy, a very mellow dude, bar culture aficionado from Chicago, and semi-regular at a nearby pub (a place that actually serves food and a decent beer selection) went in to check it out one night for a change of pace and almost got into a fight. He was lucky because fights break out there regularly, sometimes spilling out into the street and surrounding neighborhood. No one I've spoken to in the surrounding area with a shred of self respect goes there anymore. The general impression of the locals it that the people who go there are mostly folks who are not from the immediate area; troublemakers from elsewhere. Don't take my word for it, I subscribe to spotcrime.com and crimemapping.com and ever since Gilligan's opened a little over a year ago DUI and assault have skyrocketed. Stay away in the hopes they get hit with a public nuisance charge and have to close so something decent opens to replace the trash.
google avatar

George H.

Yelp
Came here with a buddy who lives in the area. My thoughts... Meh! Does this count as an Irish Pub anyway? Seemed like a dive bar to me and nothing to write home about. Ordered a couple of drinks and it started to get pretty crowded (good thing) but the crowd wasn't exactly my scene. If you're a local from the area you will probably see all of your homies from the area there and will have a great time. For me, not super awesome. The drinks were strong and pretty cheap though. Not a bad experience.

Timothy V.

Yelp
I love this place. Roxi is the best bartender I've ever had. The atmosphere is good, the people are kind, and the prices are fair. I go there every week and I feel cared about by the regulars.
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
This place doesn't have food, so I'm not sure how it qualifies as a "pub". And with only Guinness and Smithwick's on tap and a weak selection of Irish whiskeys, I'm not sure how it qualifies as "Irish" other than the Irish flags outside. Others seem to give it credit as a bar, which is all well and good, but it isn't an Irish pub in any way, shape, or form, other than the nice woman with the Irish accent behind the bar who helped me clarify the aforementioned details.
google avatar

Andy K.

Yelp
A chill little neighborhood bar, but don't let the Irish title fool you. The only thing Irish about Gilligans are its green walls and the fact that they serve Guiness. This place is mainly occupied by La Crescenta residents in their 20s and 30s. Everyone seems to know everyone else. Having said that, it's not the most exciting place in the world and the drink prices seemed a bit high for such a small neighborhood bar. Big tip: watch out for cops when you leave. They literally stalk cars that leave this place at night.
google avatar

A C.

Yelp
It's such a dive, but I love this place. Nothing special, but they serve your drinks in water glasses. It never fails, I leave buzzed and happy. Sometimes they have karaoke with Shamus the DJ....kind of ridiculously entertaining. There is a back patio that is great during summer. It's a no-frills kind of place with a strange crowd, but I always come back.
google avatar

Catt S.

Yelp
Gross! This place is nothing but a trashy drug den. The beers are cheap because they're watered down and warm! Nothing but drunk locals starting fights and the security is a joke. Sad because the bartender girl was so sweet. Save your money and go elsewhere.
google avatar

Elliot F.

Yelp
I like this place a lot better than the capri, even though its the same owner. Its like an upgraded version of the capri but i think its a lot better cause of the crowd. Drinks are the same, cheap but strong and theres 1 smokin hot bartender that works there, little short woman, mmhmmm lololol shes great! Vibe is better, more white folks here than capri. Bigger wider bar and patio!
google avatar

Francesca S.

Yelp
Been going here a lot the past year. Friendly staff and strong drinks. Good specials. I like Mondays and Thursdays. Halloween was a blast too!
