Celebrate International Chardonnay Day at These Boston-Area Spots | Eater

"While it’s not quite as old as the Jenny Grist Mill next door, this historic building has hosted a tavern for more than a century. A recent update and new ownership have added to its charm, with welcoming wood-beamed cathedral ceilings and a deck overlooking the town brook. Pair a glass of Harken Chardonnay with their extensive menu of bar food including wings and tenders with multiple sauce options, classic Ritz cracker-coated haddock, and build-your-own pizzas." - Molly McDonough

We all loved it! The clam chowder was light and delicious. Hubby and I got stuffed haddock, which was delicious. Kids got a lobster roll, burger, fish and chips, and blackened salmon, and all were wonderful. The server was super nice, and it's a nice place to sit and eat.

Google
Pizza, Bog salad, egg rolls, service and atmosphere 10/10! Best BBQ pizza that I've had. (And I eat a lot of pizza 😋). Isabelly was amazing, attentive and sweet! We will be back!

We had our small family wedding reception here last weekend in the backroom. Worked with the manager Mike to reserve the space and he made it easy and nice. We had all the guest order directly off the menu and everyone really liked their selections. The piece of fish on the fish/chips was huge, and nice and crunchy. Others had burgers which they raved about. The clam chowder was loaded with clams, and the chicken pot pie was tasty. All the dishes were delicious. We did start with wings Buffalo/teriyaki and lobster mac and cheese bites, which were yummy. Our server Madeline was AWESOME!!! being right on top of everything, making sure we always had food and drinks. She rocked it taking care of our group. Thank you for a great family event

Come for the history, stay for the burgers!! Great food, awesome staff, and cool history.

Google
Hands down the best meal of our entire vacation! We stopped in while road-tripping through New England and were blown away by the amazing food, warm service, and charming ambiance that fits perfectly with the town’s colonial vibe. We ordered the chicken pot pie and parmesan garlic wings—both were absolutely delicious and full of flavor. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the whole experience felt like a hidden gem. If you’re visiting, do yourself a favor and eat here—you won’t regret it!

Google
I’ve walked by this restaurant so many times and finally went here for dinner. Not sure what it was like before but after going in the newly owned and renovated restaurant I was so impressed how beautiful it was inside. The staff was pleasant and welcoming. We enjoyed our visit and will go back to try other choices on the menu which I found a lot of healthy options. Coconut Margarita, stuffed pretzel appetizer, broiled Haddock and the strip steak was our choice this time. It was delicious.

Google
I absolutely loved the place! I am from South-Africa and the food in America mostly does taste less flavourful - for the first time since I’m here I found a place that tastes like home. Flavourful, fast and absolute great service. Officially my favourite restaurant.

Google
Great food and the prices were fair. They have something for everyone: a lot of popular Pub food but also some interesting entrées with seasonal specials always changing. If you sit out on the deck you'll feel like you're on vacation. Inside is nice and cozy. You could tell it is family run as the service just seemed comfortable, happy and "family". I will definitely return! @amp_eats (instagram and Facebook)

Yelp
They are going to get someone sick. Ordered the Mayflower chicken and the breast was completely cold and 100% raw in the center. I let the sever know and instead replacing the meal he offered a dessert.... Then promptly charged me for it. So I paid for a raw chicken breast and dessert I didn't want that was supposed to be "on the house" because of the raw chicken. This place is a dump. Avoid it. Run by kids or a three ring circus apparently.

Yelp
Nice inside ok pub food and good drink. Fast service and overall a good experience. When you leave you can take a walk located in the heart of downtown plymouth.

Yelp
My family and I were visiting Plymouth for thanksgiving week, I've been to Gillis years before when I lived in the area however, it has been a while and with it being my fiancé's first time in New England, I wanted to make sure he got the full fall in Plymouth experience with the picturesque surroundings at the tavern. The clam chowder was hands down the best clam chowder I have had in a while (it's hard to find in Florida), the haddock was ok, I wasn't completely crazy about it, but it was good. My fiancé had a burger and it AMAZING. We brought it back to the hotel to nom on later on that night. It was a great experience, food is good, atmosphere is even better.

Yelp
Good food, both indoor and outdoor seating available! Loved that it was right next to the museum. The service was moderate- our waitress was nice but a little timid. Good was good! Would come here again out of convenience- probably wouldn't seek it out.

Yelp
Really nice service, great beer and a delicious lobster roll. We got to sit next to the grist mill outside which was really nice!

Yelp
Great waitress and the food was excellent. A huge tv made up of 4 smaller ones was in our dining room but the sound was low as was the music in this sports bar and rest so we could hear ourselves without yelling. The fish was very fresh and well seasoned.

Yelp
Location is easy to find, there is a large lot behind the restaraunt but that does fill up quickly because its public parking for anyone who is in that area. Inside its nice, very clean and plenty of room. Our waitress was a sweetheart, answered all our questions and kept our drinks full. Food was just okay... I got the daily special which was a patty melt... and this was really just a cheeseburger on toasted bread. It wasnt "melted" together. The cheese wasnt really even melted at all! It was okay, but not what I was expecting. I wouldnt order it again. The pizzas were okay, albeit a little burnt on the bottom. Drinks were great, they had a great beer and cocktail selection. Not sure id come back, other places in the area that are better.

Yelp
It was a cold and rainy Friday- after stopping to look at the grist mill decided to come in for a snack. Server very nice and attentive. Clam chowder was very good and Jonah crab cakes had a corn remoulade - never had it so nothing to compare it to. Hit the spot for a small snack. Tavern had a nice cozy feel to it. Busy bar area. Had great free parking area.

Yelp
The food and service were great. Very interesting building and cool atmosphere. Parking situation is tough though, the public lot next door was half closed and full of construction crew.

Yelp
After a long drive, I stopped off in Plymouth for dinner. I decided on Gillis Family Tavern (formerly Lucioso's Pub) at the Plimoth Grist Mill. This rustic local sports pub was very busy on a Friday night. I arrived here around 9pm and was promptly seated in the dining area to the right. The pub and bar area to the left was very loud and busy. There is another dining room towards the back. They offer good food and drink menus here and there are daily specials offered too. I ordered one of the specials, a Salmon Patty Melt ($15 plus tax) with curly fries. My food was served to me in about 10 minutes after ordering. The salmon patty melt had a firm grilled salmon burger patty melted provolone cheese, white pickled onions, ripe tomato slices, and lettuce on a thick buttery toasted burger bun. The golden fries curly fries were nice and crispy. The salmon patty and curly fries were very tasty and hot. Before I started eating, I noticed there were no napkins or silverware at my table, which should be standard practice as part of setting up tables. However, the server seemed busy, so I managed to eat my big sandwich and fries with hands only. I eventually requested a box for half of my food to go. I settled up on the check and headed out to a different bar for live music.

Yelp
After Work last night ended up at @gillisfamilytavern in Plymouth, I got Bone-In Wings with Half Garlic Parm and Half Gold Fever, I liked them, the Main Dish was: Prime Rib Sandwich with Tater Tots sorry no picture, great place to watch the Game and a bite to eat

Yelp
We called very last minute with a middle school boys hockey team. They made sure they were able to accommodate all 25 of us. Our server Emma, and the 2 food runners who helped were wonderful. They did an amazing job, they were great with the adults and the kids. The food was delicious, the drinks were great and the prices were reasonable. We had a side room and it was perfect for our rowdy crowd. The building is super cool and the vibe is fun! We'll Definitely be back for more good food, and friendly service!

Yelp
Quaint location, great food and ambience. Very quick service and attentive staff. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
We haven't been here since the change in ownership, and we won't be returning anytime soon. The reason for I gave 2 stars instead of 1 was simply because the server was very attentive, and the lamb lollipop appetizer was delicious. That's where it ended. I ordered Steak Tips, med. rare emphasis on rare, w/ baked potato & veg. I received very tough and very well done Tips. But hey, the potato was good. He ordered Medium Ribeye w/ baked potato and veg. He received a med rare steak and mashed potatoes. We didn't have time for a whole new redo. We made sure to bring it to servers attention, as an fyi and tipped her generously, but hopefully she passed along the feedback. Love the cozy feel of the pub, but unfortunately I didn't think to check out the recent reviews, or we would've never gone. It's not looking good if it continues down this path.

Yelp
Excellent meal! Hot and fast to the table, wonderful servers and great prices! Fish and chips were tasty, hamburger cooked perfectly, onion rings great. A+

Yelp
Great service and staff! We found this place by chance and stopped in for a few drinks. We had so much fun. Bartender and patrons were a blast. Didn't eat as we already had dinner plans but the pizza menu was intriguing.

Yelp
Tyler was great as a server. Attentive, caring and genuine. Micheal, the GM, was the one who brought us our food, which was a total surprise, but he made us feel welcomed, and tried really hard to get the outdoor heating lamp to work (even though it didn't). Great service all around! aand the food came out in great time! We ordered the bacon flight. Yes you read that right. Bacon in a flight. My gf's favorite was the maple bourbon, while i preferred the Sriracha. We then had the super beef, which was a cold roast beef and cheese on tip of a warm onion focachia bread - while I was dumbfounded as to the cold meat and cheese, the sandwich was amazing with the right mix of bbq sauce and mayo. We then finished our night with the potato skin pizza. Which, is INCREDIBLE!! The creamy potato makes up for the lack of sauce, and the bacon wit the sour cream just pulls it all together. One of a kind! Athens drinks were a miss, to start, the White Sangria was too tart, and my Mayflower IPA was too happy, esp for a NEIPA. But the second veer I had was much better and the mule my gf had was by far a hit. While the drinks were a hit/miss, the food, and by far the service made up for the lackluster start to the meal. Don't let the low reviews prevent you form enjoying an amazing meal here.

Yelp
No following through with customers. restaurant did not deliver 2 of the 6 items through DoorDash...they were told of the problem and had the two items sitting at the restaurant instead of having them delivered said they would credit the $24 that night...after many calls and e-mails no credit to my account. it's been over a month not Happy and will not be ordering again... much better when it was Lucioso's and also better when they used their own delivery

Ray B.

Yelp
please do not come here, food is over priced, and I order a dish that came out cold and under cooked. wife dish came without any side just cold Mac and cheese. also we order appetizer and never came out. waitress was also rude. will never comeback.

Tom L.

Yelp
This tavern is a local haunt with a hometown feel...Under new ownership, the menu has been revamped to include everything from sandwiches, pizza, and burgers to a prime rib dinner. Their fries are my wife's favorite! There is a nice bar area complete with a fireplace. Plenty of tvs to keep you up on the latest sports...Keno as well...You won't be disappointed!

Jason M.

Yelp
Service was great and that's where it ended. Usually our spot a few times a month in the summer but definitely will be finding somewhere else. First plate, Airline chicken breast, it was a small chicken thigh the size of a parakeet. Hawaiian pizza, I had one slice and didn't eat anymore, pretty sure they ran out of pizza sauce and it was super dry. Pizza flight was all burnt. Yes, we did mention the chicken thigh to the server and he just played it off. I didn't want to escalate the situation as I just wanted to pay and leave because I was annoyed. Won't be returning soon. O yea, drinks were on point, so kudos to the bartender.

B L.

Yelp
Best burger ever & I'm going back to try more menu items! Efficient & accommodating service. Lots of gluten free options. Noise level was loud. Ask to sit in the back room for less noise.

Yelp
DO NOT EAT HERE . We debated 15 to 20 different restaurants Saturday night , 12/28/2024. We eat in Plymouth often. We decided we would give Gillis -Family Tavern a try, something local where we weren't feeding the corporate man. Waitress was great, attended to us quickly, brought our drinks and took our order quickly. Dinner came out extremely fast. My dinner was done in grand fashion . My girlfriend asked for her steak to be medium rare and it came outwell well done. we asked the waitress what she thought and she finished the sentence, that is well done. I'm sorry. It took about 20 minutes to get the replacement and when it did come back, it had No Demi-glaze and aside from searing the outside of it, It appeared that it had never seen the grill. Raw. The cook made a mistake and then decided to punish us for asking for it to be corrected. Typical angry cook nonsense. Never ever again . DO NOT EAT HERE .

Janice R.

Yelp
Soooo quaint and cute!! Nevermind having the friendliest & funniest staff on Cape Cod (Kirsten, Maddie, Isabely and Mike!) but my lunch last Tuesday was absolutely incredible!! Stop what you are doing and don't walk but RUN to go try the pilgrim sandwich!!!

Maggie D.

Yelp
Extreme disappointment! Enjoying dinner at Gillis Family Tavern. Apparently they allow smoking in the bar. When I complained to the manager, he told the bar tender, the guy left for 2 minutes and came back and got served by said bar tender. They handed me my check. Tried to get the managers attention a second time to let him know. He ignored me. Food was good, service was good but we won't be back. The offender is a regular (we've seen him previously).

Fremont W.

Yelp
Had dinner there last night and it might be the best meal we have had in a while, the Shepard's pie was amazing, the cod sandwich was super fresh and delicious.

Linda R.

Yelp
We had a delightful and delicious meal at Gillis. We loved the ambiance and the friendliness of the accomodating staff our burgers were some of the best we have ever eaten. We will return.

Jerry R.

Yelp
servers were more interested in socializing amongst themselves so even ordering took awhile. roast beef sandwich came out ice cold. cheese has actually hard. was told that was how a roast beef is served. woulda been nice to know that beforehand. live entertainment that night was horrible. couldnt hear yourself talk and every song was a bad Hootie rendition. shame. its a beautiful spot but they dont seem to try hard

Yelp
I wanted so bad to like this restaurant because I spend summers in Plymouth. We came for dinner with another couple because we were told by friends to try it out. Service was a little slow but our server was polite and seemed to be doing his best. I would give the service 4 stars but the overall experience just takes away from that. We looked at the menu online before arriving and 3 of us got the scallops and risotto because it looked amazing. In the photo it showed a nice bed of risotto surrounded by 8 sea scallops. Well we did get a scoop of risotto surrounded by 5 scallops. It looked nothing like the photo and was a considerably smaller portion. Scallops were overcooked and rubbery, needless to say we were all disappointed. I don't mind paying for a good meal but don't show me a Cadillac and send me a Hyundai.

John T.

Yelp
Had dinner there on Monday night, October 30th, not pleased. Bangers and mashed: the sausage were okay, the potatoes were no better than high school cafeteria food, and the vegetable medley was definitely out of a can. There should have been more gravy to hide the spuds and veggies! Had a couple of Guinness served in a down-sized glass, not a true pint. Second time being disappointed there, will NOT be back!

Sue R.

Yelp
This is one of our favorites places to go. Food is delish and everyone is so friendly. We usually sit at the bar and the staff and customers are all so friendly and love to chit chat

David S.

Yelp
Love this place Got an order on nachos piled high to the sky. Great service and the location can't be beat
google avatar

Butch L.

Yelp
Not worth the price, food is way under seasoned buff chix egg rolls was shredded chicken, spud skin pie was mashed potatoes burnt cheese, French dip over cooked. Never coming back's

J W.

Yelp
Good service and nice ambience but horrible food. Ordered Pilgrim sandwich...disgusting. They were also out of a lot of things, including liquor. Odd place.

Sarah W.

Yelp
Beautiful property, food wasn't bad, but the prices on the menu were almost $10 cheaper than what the check said.... which was given to us before we finished eating. Will not be back.

Leah G.

Yelp
Be prepared to pay a 3% "hospitality fee" on every order, even for their own merchandise, which is not posted anywhere. If you question the fee, only then do they inform you that it exists.

Gregg B.

Yelp
Thank you to the staff and patrons for being so kind to us during our visits this weekend while our mother was receiving hospice care at Newfield House. And a very special thanks to the patron who realized our situation and played his bagpipes for us as a tribute to mom. You all warmed our hearts when we needed it most, and we thank you so very much. And the clam chowder and cranberry smash cocktails were delicious too!
google avatar

Kim M.

Yelp
Chicken wings, home made potato chips were great! We didn't care for the onion rings though. I had a lemon martini which was on point.

Jim L.

Yelp
So... with all the recent negativity on social media regarding the quality of the tavern we decided to try it out the other evening. service was very good but the food was terrible. you could tell that the entrees were previously frozen and reheated. there has been a shakeup lately with management and bar service. used to be a great little pub, but unfortunately now just mailing it in... maybe hoping for the tourist season

Joe A.

Yelp
Multiple chances and failed everytime. This might be a good place to get a beer, wings and watch a game but anything else I wouldn't bother. They have tried to make their menu look more sophisticated or comparable to other downtown restaurants, but the execution is straight Cafeteria food at Plymouth prices.
google avatar

Chine M.

Yelp
The food was ok it isn't the same as it used to be. The new owners are nice and the service is pretty good of course I had delivery so I am not sure about the atmosphere of the restaurant itself.

C J P.

Yelp
Nice setting with really great bartenders and waitstaff...Good drinks but the food is only average...I would go back for a drink but probably not to eat...

Yelp
We live in Plymouth and this week we had the pleasure of visiting GFT, for the very first time! Why did we wait so long?!? The Restaurant is located conveniently close to Downtown and adjacent to the free parking lot and old Grist Mill. We were greeted warmly when we entered the Restaurant (which surprisingly happens less often than you would think - it should ALWAYS happen!). Our Server - Janine - was very friendly and took good care of us. They have a diverse and delicious Menu, with selections for every taste. Abundant TV's for the Sports enthusiasts, and a really fun and welcoming vibe!! Give them a try, I think you will be happy you did! Eric

Kian T.

Yelp
Labor Day, very busy. Beautiful day and they have a deck so we asked to be seated outside by the mill. Perfect spot! Group of 4, we were on somewhat of a schedule but no rush. We had to drive back to Maine but we have budgeted ourselves extra time, since we chose the closest place! We waited over 30 mins for our initial drinks. The food arrived in appropriate time, ordered at the same time as our drinks. $10 side of kraft Mac and cheese, though... We eat, about 65/70 mins has passed. Another 35 mins pass after we had asked for our boxes and the check to come. The young man who served us was very flustered, serving people inside and outside. Food was decent but on top of the service and drink prices, I expect more. I spent $140, without tip!

Gary M.

Yelp
This spot was mediocre at best, but their service, attention, and respect for customers is truly lacking. I went there for St Patrick's Day lunch on March 16, 2024. My wife and I had drinks and food, which was ok. The problem was I left a generous cash tip, but somehow with the payment machine, my credit card added a tip to the bill, so essentially paid about $47 in total tip for a $117. bill. I left messages for the owner 2x, with no call back for a refund. Then I reached him, explained the situation, and he said he was sorry and would take care of it. That was 3 months ago and still no credit for the tip. I was so happy with his response when I reached him, even though I left 2 messages and he didn't call me back, that I took my sister and spouse, as well as my wife back for dinner to celebrate new car purchases for both couples. The food was fine, service was great, but I noticed on my bill after the fact that there was a "hospitality fee" of 3% ON THE TOTAL CHECK to help the owner with restaurant expenses. I guess I did not notice it previously when I double tipped the waitress. I have since called and spoken to the hostess, Isabeli, and a server, Josh, who both assured me that Brendan, the owner, would call me back - that was 3 phone calls, several weeks ago, and still nothing. I dine out often and thought the place was decent, but I will NEVER RETURN to dine here and will let everyone I know and they can tell others not to patronize this restaurant - as the owner is so very anti-customer and ungrateful. With the cost of dining out, go somewhere where you will be treated like a paying customer and be respected for your integrity and honesty. Not only did I lose about $25. in over-tipping, but I paid a 3% hospitality fee on 2 checks that did not serve me in anyway possible. The place is not cheap , either, so to pay a service charge on top of menu and drink prices, tax, and gratuity, is SO WRONG in so many ways.......!

Karen C.

Yelp
Excellent restaurant and bar! Beautiful location, nice greeting when entering, great drink menu, superb sandwiches! Will be coming back soon!

Kathy B.

Yelp
First time there. Ordered Caesar salad with grilled chicken. I am not kidding when I say the chicken was so tough, I was sure that it had been reheated more than once. When I mentioned it to my table Nate, she stated that she had had a a similar experience. The sale itself was tasty. Our server Matt was excellent, and the music that night was great!

Colt N.

Yelp
Great atmosphere next to the Grist mill. Enjoyed a cocktail and some lobster rangoons from their specials. Prompt and kind service.
