On the Grid : Gimme Coffee

"You know how you arrive back to the states, after an extensive stay in Italy and almost as soon as you land you mourn the loss of your beloved Italian made cappuccino? Well – get to a Gimme Coffee! The production of your coffee – from roast to brew – is what’s important for the folks at this Ithacan coffee roaster (although, many of us breathe a sigh of relief to know we can find Gimme! In Manhattan and Brooklyn as well.) And its why, undoubtedly, they were named Roaster of the Year in 2013. You can find Gimme! Locations scattered around Ithaca – or other establishments serving Gimme! but our personal favorite spot is located on Cayuga Street, by the creek, and a perfect spot to sit, with your cappuccino for as long as you dare. Great ambiance, perfectly pulled shots, and some latte art to top it off. And, don’t miss the baked goods if you're hungry and their plentiful tea selection." - St. John Design Group

This is an adorable cafe on the corner with incredible coffee and lovely service. The rose almond latte is truly divine!!! Love that they have soy milk too, it's hard to find!

Google
Cute coffee shop and very busy, but in a good way! Delicious scones and coffee

Employees here were pretty sweet! Also a big fan of the coffee was quite the fine latte. Delicious and quality beans. Parmesan Leek Croissant is in a whole ‘nother league. All the pastries are actually pretty good.

Kailyn Liu

Google
I really love the matcha latte with oat milk here because it isn’t too sweet and has plenty of matcha flavor. The pastries are really good and the staff are wonderful. I love stopping here on my walks and it’s a really cozy place to hang out!

Google
Greatest coffee in Town! Had it several times and always so happy and grateful I went there! (My favorite : Iced Oat Latte 😍🤘)

Google
I stopped in at Gimme! Coffee after a short walk from the Hilton Garden Inn. The barista is well-trained and pulled a perfect shot for my Americano. They had an excellent selection of pastries that looked tasty. There is seating outside and inside. I would definitely recommend Gimme! Coffee!!

Google
Gimme Goers, a loving reminder to bring your own mug! Let’s stop drinking coffee out of irreverent paper cups (gimme’s good coffee deserves better), which too-quickly cool your brew, and then go to land fills after one use…

Matt Daniel

Google
Great local coffee shop chain! Location was small but had some neighborhood vibes going on inside. The pastries were fresh and the coffee was great! The staff was very helpful and friendly. They also have a bathroom. Hope this helps!

Yelp
Since our first trip to Trumansburg and now to ordering 4 bags via the web at time Gimme coffee is one of our favorite pour over coffee Go to. From Deep Disco to their Sumatra blends if you know how to brew coffee then you will know that you need Gimme Coffee

Yelp
This is my favorite Gimme! Coffee location in Ithaca! I love how small/cozy it is and has nice outdoor seating. They also have a lot of great vegan/dairy-free options. I usually get the iced matcha latte with oat milk, and I really enjoy it because they don't make it with a sweetener/honey (unless requested). They also have a wonderful baked goods section with vegan croissants, muffins, cookies, and pastries. Definitely one of the most allergen friendly coffee shops I've been to in the area. I also really love the service. The baristas are super friendly and are good at handling rush hours. Even on the busiest days, I've never had to wait super long for my drink. Love this place!!

Yelp
Brought my friend here to check out Gimme! Coffee, and while the spot has its charm, there are a few things worth noting. First off, this place closes pretty early, which isn't ideal if you're looking for a late-night study session. The coffee is decent by Ithaca standards, but some of their seasonal drinks are absolutely disgusting. I decided to be adventurous and ordered one of their seasonal drinks, and let's just say that marked the end of my "trying new things" era. Seriously, that drink was a taste bud betrayal. I shared the seasonal tonic drink with friends, and they unanimously agreed it was absolutely disgusting. I have no idea why that drink was made or who thought it was a good idea to put it on the seasonal menu. Did anyone actually taste it before giving it the green light? Here's the funny (or tragic) part: I held onto that drink from early morning to late noon because I didn't want to waste my money. It was like carrying around a bad relationship all day, hoping it would somehow get better. Spoiler alert: it didn't. I ended up throwing the whole thing away anyway because of how foul it tasted. Money well spent... not. I've also tried their matcha latte, and it was mid at best. Nothing spectacular that I would crave to come back for. Overall, Gimme! Coffee is a bit overrated. Stick to the basics if you go, and beware of the seasonal menu--it might just ruin your adventurous spirit, your taste buds, and your wallet.

Yelp
Great macchiato, no not that Starbucks thing, the real kind. Fast friendly service that handles the swarms of coeds well. Only downside is seating. We were lucky to grab a table but that can definitely be challenging here as people are camped out with laptops.
google avatar

Yelp
Tried a basic espresso and was disappointed, kind of bitter/sour. Scone was good. Atmosphere is good.
google avatar

Adam R.

Yelp
This is a terrific coffee spot. They roast their own beans, it makes great espresso, they've got different delectable, pastries (a spinach, feta, scone that satisfies), and always friendly service. But the true highlight for me, is the espresso, tonic, and the seasonal orange, cardamom, espresso tonic. It's not to be missed, it's completely refreshing, they make their own syrup, and no one else makes any drink like this. It's worth coming up to Ithaca once a year just for it.
google avatar

Yelp
decent college town coffee shop decent street parking inside decor is too dark and dank needs a refresh
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
Very cute work space, roomy, but cold--they need to turn the heat up. Chai was good with lots of foam. Iced coffee was decent and the fig and goat cheese scone was very good. Friendly staff and not too busy for an early Saturday morning.
google avatar

Yelp
Outstanding coffee and expresso drinks Get a latte and pair it with their legendary savory scones for a perfect meal.

J C.

Yelp
I've been a customer for like 15 years and I even worked there when I was in grad school. I love the place. But seriously, being an aloof and curt barista isn't cool. I don't want the Trader Joe's treatment; I just want to order my coffee without feeling weird. Talking to you, Cayuga Street.

Michelle W.

Yelp
I gave bags of Gimme Coffee for Christmas gifts, along with Gimme Toffee. The absolute raves that I got for these gifts has me seriously thinking about starting to drink coffee myself. The smell of the coffee is amazing. The toffee is such that I now NEED it. Do not pass on this, or you will be sorry!
google avatar

Vicki K.

Yelp
Oh gosh the young lady behind the counter if she didn't look lik my neice Id have a good word with her! The attitude in this one. Housemate clove syrup was a nice SWEET TREAT in my cold brew to cope with the BITTER service.
google avatar

Shaji K.

Yelp
Needed a pick me up on a Sunday morning, this spot thankfully has street parking nearby and no line to order. Straight forward coffee place with a small menu and a limited amount of pastries behind the counter. Opted for a Large Latte ($4.25) - a strong, warm brew that needed no extra sugar. Enjoyed it outside where they have one bench for anyone braving the cold. Coffee took a little bit of time, but wasn't in a rush anyway. Other locations around town as well.
google avatar

Christy C.

Yelp
Got there 5 minutes before they opened today. Worker stands by the door with their phone and opens the door at precisely 7:30. Staff were snotty in general. They were very concerned about where we we were standing for payment, etc. latte was good but didn't knock my socks off. Wouldn't rush back. I was looking forward to trying them. Disappointed.
google avatar

Naurel V.

Yelp
Disappointed every time. There's always a line which makes me think it's worth it. Worth the wait, worth the price, worth the effort it takes up to get a 10 oz cup to my lips... it's not. The signage is ambiguous and the baristas are unhelpful. I am a lover of coffee and fairly easy to please, and yet I have not once been satisfied with my cup from Gimme-- and for the hassle and cost, would you believe that I expect to be pleased rather than merely satisfied? Many busy establishments are still able to make their patrons feel important by listening to them and customizing their orders. Here I have felt embarrassed to ask a question. Not my cuppa.
google avatar

Farhat K.

Yelp
I'm not a big coffee drinker but even I can recognize a good coffee. I ordered the mocha and it tasted very good. Came back here three days in a row. Also got a small chocolate bundt cake and it was okay. Price was fair and the barista moved with urgency and made the drink fast. Can't complain.
google avatar

Rachael M.

Yelp
Gimme has a great vibe and delicious coffee! Both the soy and oat milk lattes are delicious.
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
Good solid coffee. Smooth blend and baristas that can make it proper. Yummy pastries too.

Yelp
Gimme! is a great place for people who take coffee seriously but are not pretentious about it. I far prefer this location to the other one I've visited (the one closer to College Ave), for both aesthetic and service. Staff is super friendly, music selection is always on point, and the general vibe is really inviting. As far as the actual caffeination goes: I love the lattes, I'm not a huge fan of the cold brew but I did put almond milk in mine which seemed like a good idea at the time but retrospectively probably was not the move. The spaces inside seem to be reserved for people who are plugged in, but there are quite a few tables available outside as well, and it's so nice to sit outside with a coffee and a book in the summer. This location is also in very close proximity to the bottom of the Cascadilla Gorge trail, so if you're feeling outdoorsy, get a coffee to go and explore. Also, a more general PSA -- on the other side of Cascadilla St. across from this location, there is a little free 24-hour parking row. This is particularly useful if you are day-tripping in Ithaca or want to hang out around the Commons and avoid the hassle of fighting over street parking spots.
google avatar

Bee C.

Yelp
The iced decaf chai was amazing! The espresso was good (maybe the best we had in Ithaca), but wish it wasn't in a paper cup.
google avatar

Joseph B.

Yelp
Gimme! has a friendly staff, the coffee is very good, and the space is nifty. The shop is small and fills up quickly. As a result it's a safer bet to go with a to go offer, since getting a table isn't necessarily reliable.
google avatar

Eleanor P.

Yelp
I did not try their coffee, but it smelled amazing! I got a scone from Krum's Corners bakery (which they carry) and it was pretty good. Not the best scone, but a nice snack. I was looking at the pretzel roll, which looked great. Again, this is more a review of the pastry. I will review again when I've had the coffee. The environment was high energy. I don't know how someone could get work done there but it's a great place to meet up for a chat. I think it would be amazing when the weather is nice.
google avatar

Breanna B.

Yelp
I stop here almost every time on the way to Ithaca. I grab a coffee to go. The space is quaint - there are a few tables to sit and enjoy your coffee. The staff is friendly and speedy. It's a good cup of pre-brewed coffee from a local spot. Especially one that roasts their own beans with a solid commitment to sustainability.

M S.

Yelp
I was introduced to FLCR while visiting family in Ithaca. I live in another state and like to order online from Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters, their coffee is just great. I find that their website ordering process is clunky and they provide no option to make an account which would absolutely streamline the customer checkout and payment experience. Also, while I am more than willing to pay more for their coffee I was disappointed to find LESS than the advertised one pound of coffee in each bag I received. I am hoping the owners/managers of this enterprise might take a look at improving the customer experience.
google avatar

Edith B.

Yelp
I had been recommended to go to a Gimme! Coffee in Ithaca, and I finally made it. The line for coffee is to the left of the cafe and ends by a window of glistening pastries. I ordered a dirty chai latte, my usual-only with a twist! The barista created a beautiful swirl in my cup. It looked and tasted perfect. Not too watery or milky. The atmosphere in the restaurant was warm and pleasant, although I think you might have to go early to get a seat amongst all the busy people on their laptops.
google avatar

Katherine B.

Yelp
This is my favorite coffee place in Ithaca. Good, strong, yet balanced bold coffee. Friendly baristas and lots of non-dairy milk options. Yummy!
google avatar

Kim P.

Yelp
Small fancy (excellent!!!) cappuccinos! Really high quality drinks. Very limited food options. So limited that there was nothing I found pleasing. The caffe left a little to be desired TBH and I went to get another capp elsewhere. The space is set up so 10-12 people can work on laptops. There isn't really good space for groups of 3 or more.
google avatar

Yelp
A cute, quiet ambience in the heart of a quirky college town. I came here on a date and it was the perfect place- light conversation going on around you; friendly service; and some interesting people passing by both inside of the shop and outside on N. Cayuga St. My complaint is that it's a tiny building/room. There wasn't anywhere near enough space to house everyone who wanted to sit down, and my date and I had to wait around a bit before we could sit down. This was on a Saturday morning, though, so I assume busy-ness and space are less of an issue on typical weekdays. Food-wise, I can only review the iced coffee. It's a dark, cool blend that has a freshly-brewed and authentic taste. I drink iced coffees black, but this one might be taken best with some milk or sugar. It's dark. To be clear: this place is MUCH BETTER than Starbucks. I left very satisfied, and will be back soon.
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
The staff is super nice and the vibe is great. I'm from out of town and this place feels like home. Super nice people, wifi, and great beverages. I recommend the iced peppermint tea
google avatar

Samantha S.

Yelp
This coffee shop is cute, located on the corner they have some outdoor seating and a couple of places to grab a seat inside as well but it is small for the most part. Came in around 6 or so on a Saturday evening because I'm all about trying different kinds of coffee whenever I'm traveling somewhere. The gentleman behind the counter was friendly enough, ordered a small drip and it is small folks so make sure you know what you're getting yourself into when you get that size, mini is a better name. They had all sorts of non-dairy milk and being that we were in Ithaca there was no doubt in my mind they were going to have plenty of options; oat, soy and almond milk as well. They also had a few baked goods in the window, which looks absolutely delicious. They sold their Gimme! Coffee beans as well. Not sure what kind of food they served if anything other than the pastries, just took my coffee to go. Unfortunately when I took a sip it tasted burnt, really burnt. Like, no joke maybe the worst cup of coffee I've ever tasted and so I actually stopped drinking it and left it in the cup holder for the remainder of our hour drive back to Binghamton. HOWEVER, an hour later I gave it another shot and the taste got better, weird, I know, not sure if I was desperate for coffee and would drink anything or if the flavor actually got better after it cooled but regardless, it wasn't a good cup for me. Burnt taste, people clearly love it based on the reviews but it wasn't for me.
google avatar

Yelp
This place does not get enough credit in a town that seems to only function off of CTB and Ithaca Coffee company. Gimme! Coffee is a great hole in the wall cafe that offers coffee and pastries for a very reasonable price. From muffins, scones, pound cakes, cookies, and croissants, all the the baked goods look spectacular and after trying the pound cake they do a grate job with there baked goods. I will warn you this is not a large cafe and does not have much seating but during the summer time there are bunches and tables outside. I was pleasantly surprised to find this place and although it is a couple blocks off the common, it is worth the walk.
google avatar

Tracey B.

Yelp
Iced coffee was good. Service was just as icy. Not a place to go for friendly, welcoming service unless you are a total hipster or wanna be. Guess I will have to ad some tats or piercings so I will at least get a response for my "hi". I like to support the local businesses, but I almost wish I went to Starbucks.
google avatar

Teka L.

Yelp
Nice coffee shop in the college town of Ithaca. The baristas pour the coffee properly. There is plenty of seating. The temperature is comfortable. They also roast beans so you can buy some and make your coffee at home. This is a small local chain with branches in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
google avatar

Nicole R.

Yelp
Very disappointing. Strange, unwelcoming atmosphere with an odd layout. They no longer offer a pour over option :( Coffee is pre-brewed and not made to order. There isn't a lot of indoor seating either. Not worth the $$$ for pre-brewed coffee. I can make that at home folks!
google avatar

Brooke S.

Yelp
Great Coffee that is served traditionally. The baristas were very friendly and the shop was very quaint even while packed full of people! Skip Starbucks and go here!
google avatar

Sara S.

Yelp
Classic Ithaca coffee experience: if you're only in town a day or two, this is the place to get your morning cuppa or afternoon pickup. Baristas and staff know their stuff, and the descriptions on the bags of beans will entice you as you wait in line. This is craft coffee; smalls are small and these are not Dunkin prices. But the quality is great, and service is friendly and professional. I wish their decaf options were more robust, but I recognize that noncaffeinated isn't exactly a popular choice in a college town...
google avatar

Carle W.

Yelp
Literally the best vanilla latte of my life!!!! They have the absolute creamiest milk to ever exist. Staff is friendly and speedy but also take the time to make the perfect beverage. Love all the little things you can takeaway from there.
google avatar

Shu T.

Yelp
This place is walkable from my house and I would definitely come here to work! They have two different drip coffee to choose from and it's about the same price as Starbucks. I would definitely get this over Starbucks.
google avatar

Stephanie Q.

Yelp
Friend: What do you feel like having for breakfast this morning? Me: Gimme! Coffee (in a hungover state) Friend: Ok.. I'll give you your coffee. Starbucks, watch out! Gimme! Coffee is so much better. I asked for a small drip coffee but it was too small ie. not enough to cure my hangover. So I went with the medium instead. It was about $2, which is cheaper than Starbucks, but way tastier. This place has bathrooms, a good selection of tea (my friend had the Gunpowder Green tea), and lots of organic treats. I wish Gimme! Coffee would come to NYC...
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
Gimme is for REAL coffee drinkers. If you like fancy coffee drinks, this is not the place for you. If you take 10 minutes to make up your mind about what you want, this is not the place for you. If you want some long conversation with your barista before you get your coffee, this is not the place for you. Gimme is a straight up, fast paced coffee shop. You blurt out your order, pay, and get out of the way. Why? Because there are probably at least 5 people behind you who also want coffee. Don't get me wrong, those barista/os can hold a conversation, I'm sure. And they could probably tell you a lot because Gimme! is all about preparation and ability. Oh yea, and their coffee's strong. So be prepared for the new sprouts of hair on your chest the morning after. ;) Enjoy!
google avatar

Dani B.

Yelp
I've become a Gimme addict in the last year when I moved to Ithaca. Normally, I hate coffee. But their stuff is so damn good. However, I'm not a coffee connoisseur. I do, however, know a good latte when I have one. And Gimme has the best latte I've ever had. Perfect ratio of espresso to milk, and not too milky--definitely strong enough to give you that kick in the pants you need as a grad student constantly writing papers. I know Gimme is famous for their coffee, but they have other delights too. First, ambiance. At all the Ithaca-area locations, they always have tables to sit at. And study. With a laptop. And a plug nearby. And they won't give you the evil eye. My favorite is State Street only because I live so close and I love to sit outside and people watch when I'm trying to write a paper. Cayuga is a close second because they have more light and also great people-watching. T-burg is fun if you need to escape Ithaca or want to experience a quaint east coast village and see families instead of college students. And Lansing is great if you need a huge table to sprawl and tune out the world on a snowy day. It's a converted gas station, btw. Second, their treats ARE AMAZING. I usually stare down the raspberry breakfast bar or the orange ginger snap for awhile before having to make my decision. You won't regret either. My friend told me that a little old lady makes their treats. I don't know if it's true, but I think it makes the whole experience better. Gimme doesn't get five stars because of one reason: they close at 9pm. What kind of coffee place in a college town closes that early? I asked one time, and they said that there isn't enough demand. A small poll of my peers says that is so not true. Please, gimme, stay open later!
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
Their espresso drinks are brilliant -- not merely delicious espresso blends but precise preparation and demonstration of passion and knowledge. They are a bit pricey compared to a few other specialty coffee ventures around the U.S. (Ritual, Four Barrel, Intelligentsia). My cappuccino was excellent but I took a quick look at the coffee preparation options -- no siphon, no Clover, no pour over! What's up with that Gimme! Your coffee is too delicious (I've ordered online and prepared at home) for the prep options you've got. The space is bright and red, with local art, beautiful windows, and space for announcements. Cool.
google avatar

Nat R.

Yelp
I live about a block away from this Gimme location, a fact I choose to highlight when advertising the apartment upstairs for rent! Gimme is an Ithaca institution. They serve up amazing, quality coffee drinks and don't get bogged down with superfluous non-coffee crap like bagels and the like. Their staff is focused on one thing and one thing only: pulling excellent shots of espresso! YUM! Sadly, the seating in this place stinks which is why I can't give them 5 stars. Back in the day, they used to have the bar set up in the front with seating in the back. It was actually possible to hang out with friends over coffee and some conversation. Now it's turned into "laptopistan" and your only recourse is to get a drink to go and maybe drink it in the park next door. Oh well.....there are worse things I guess.
google avatar

Peter G.

Yelp
Everything about Gimme! Coffee is amazing. I don't live in Ithaca anymore, and I haven't found any coffee that compares. Period.
google avatar

Lola B.

Yelp
I realize that I am often verbose. Not needed for this review. Gimme = Perfection. (I will note however that it is kind of funny that when I searched for Gimme that several of my own reviews for other places popped up... guess I reference this wonderful coffee quite a bit...)
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
Wow, I am usually freakishly loyal to Starbucks, but can I venture to say Gimme! Coffee is even better? It looked like this place was undergoing some rennovation when we visited here so I won't comment too much on the decor. They did have cute tables set up outside, however. The hazelnut latte I sampled was absolutely delicious! These people definitely know what they are doing!
google avatar

Rebecca W.

Yelp
I love Gimme. Really. They roast their own beans. Their baristas are well-trained. They prepare consistently fantastic coffee drinks. And this location is open late enough for me to stop by on an after dinner walk.
google avatar

Mandy S.

Yelp
What is not to love about Gimmee? The owner prides himself on providing customers the "perfect cup of coffee." And it comes as close to that as anything else I've had. Plus, the prices are cheaper than Starbucks, and you can support a local business. Three great reasons to give them a try. You can also buy beans to take home and grind/brew yourself - though you're a idiot if you think your homemade coffee will be anything like what they serve at the coffeeshop. I don't know if it's magic or pixie dust or what, but they add something to it to make it unbelievable.
google avatar

Samantha P.

Yelp
I REALLY REALLY appreciate a good coffee place, especially when its local. Great cappuccino to go, all seats were full though so I couldn't have stayed if I wanted to. Artsy flair... Loved it!
