"Ginger & Scallion knows poultry and grains like Bruce Springsteen knows New Jersey. This bare-bones Phinney Ridge spot with just a handful of tables has quickly become a great casual weeknight dinner option, and that’s thanks to their juicy poached hainanese chicken and schmaltzy rice. Having a strong hankering for chicken and rice from the get-go is a prerequisite for enjoying a meal here, but if anything’s going to get us in the mood, it’s this place. Not one morsel of meat is dry—cold-on-purpose hunks of drunken chicken are plump and tart from a rice wine soak, while shreds of moist white meat sauced with tangy curry take a sizable slap of heat from chili crisp. photo credit: Nate Watters photo credit: Nate Watters photo credit: Nate Watters photo credit: Nate Watters photo credit: Nate Watters Stick to the chicken, because things go south with everything else—like tofu braised (read: absolutely assaulted) in five-spice, cucumber salad more boring than middle schoolers performing Shakespeare, and little teacups of flavorless broth that you can go right ahead and ignore. Prioritize poultry, and poultry only, and you’ll be in good hands. @infatuation_seattle This spot has quickly become one of the best casual weeknight dinner options in town, and that’s thanks to a short menu of poached Hainanese chicken, schmaltzy rice, and add-ons like tart cucumber salad or fried skins. #gingerandscallion #phinneyridge #secretcongee #gingerandscallionseattle #bestfoodseattle #infatuationseattle ♬ time travel - chief. & nobuddy Keep scrolling for the food rundown Food Rundown photo credit: Nate Watters Cucumber Salad There’s not much to it—cucumber rounds, rice vinegar, a touch of toasty sesame oil, and exactly two goji berries for garnish. Go forth if something light and cold to crunch on sounds good, but these are not the kind of cukes that younger generations will read about in the history books. photo credit: Nate Watters Mary's Chips Crispy fried bird skins with a bit of sweet chili sauce for dipping can have their place on the table as a little snack, though you don’t totally need them. photo credit: Nate Watters Drunken Chicken & Rice Here’s where things get good. A rice wine marinade gives the chicken a low-ABV bite. You get to choose between dark or white meat, but you’ll want it with dark—the koji flavor cuts through extra fat nicely. photo credit: Nate Watters BBQ Chicken & Rice If you’d rather chaperone a seventh birthday party at Wild Waves than mess with floppy chicken skin, opt for the BBQ, which features roasted five-spice-rubbed skin that manages to infuse just enough white meat beneath with a hit of cloves et al. photo credit: Nate Watters Chicken Curry Rice The best dish here, there's just enough marigold-tinged curry sauce on this pile of pulled white meat to moisten things up without turning the whole plate into stew. That, plus some frizzled shallots and a spoonful of chili crisp, add a ton of variety in texture and heat. Five-Spice Braised Tofu These cubes of tofu are completely overpowered by liquified five-spice, leaving you with a mouthful of wet cinnamon and not much else. If you’re vegetarian or not in the mood for chicken, just eat somewhere else." - Aimee Rizzo

Google
Nestled between Union City and West New York, sits a hole in the wall restaurant pumping out some really delicious sushi! I got the spicy salmon crunch roll and what they call the Hometown Roll, a more deluxe version of a spicy salmon roll. Both were delicious, and it left me wanting to come back to try other delicious rolls from this restaurant. Not to mention, the pricing was rather good. Both rolls and a Snapple came out to be $20, which is pretty decent for one person.

Google
Great Japanese food, tasty, big portions and reasonably priced. Minor constructive criticism is the Tofu bento box includes California roll (has crabstick in the filling), it would be nice to offer a vegetarian roll with this instead because a Tofu bento box infers that it's all vegetarian.

Google
Excellent service, food, and taste!!! I highly recommend it. Parking is a challenge, but it's worth it. Try the tempura 🍤!!!

Nancy Miranda

Google
Orders about 5 different types of rolls. Can't go wrong with a classic like spicy tuna !. Their katsu bento box was amazing!

Google

Google
I love buying sushi here after work, tastes great and quick service! I recommend trying their cream cheese puffs as well, very yummy

Zoey Phillips

Google
Great sushi. Nothing fancy in terms of ambiance but worth it for the delicious food! Nice weeknight dinner or takeout spot.

Google
Staff is super friendly and the food is always delicious! I usually always get the Spicy Salmon and the fish tastes very fresh. Prices are great as well!

Yelp
Ordered delivery Chicken teriyaki sushi was slamming Hibachi plates were fresh with great portions. Everything was fresh, cooked thoroughly, and seasoned well. Will definitely order again.

James K.

Yelp
I like their special roll. And I want to suggest to make less rice on the simple salmon roll. Price was so resonable.

Septima M.

Yelp
I got delivery and it started off wrong! He didn't pay attention to the building address! He dropped my food as I told him too. When I went to grab it, within 30 seconds, nothing. I called him back and asked if he'd actuallly left it. He said he did and he repeated to me my exact address. I looked again, I looked where the bug packages are inside of security gate! I then went around and checked all the surrounding buildings. And I found my food. I took a picture and sent a text telling him his mistake and got to reply, no apology. That's not good service!! The food was flavorless! The potstickers looked pretty but were lack luster, the sauce was way watered down! The ginger dressing for my salad was straight up mayonnaise! And the miso and udon soup were also lacking any meaningful flavor.

Yelp
This place has extremely horrible service: 1:Let's start with that they have dine in service but won't even bring the food out to your table mind you there is only 3 tables in the whole establishment or pass it thru the open window area that they have at the counter area, No grace whatsoever!! 2: One of the lady's at the counter has a horrible attitude it's as they were serving you for free, mind you my order was well over $130 bucks for 7 rolls.. 3: You can't even ask for a Fork for free cause they instantly scrounge up their face as if you didn't order food and please don't ask for any condiments cause they will try to up-charge a $1 for something that should be given if you purchased food 4: The food is mostly 2/10 it's average at best on a good night very very basic sushi if you can skip this place and save yourself the money and headache! Horrible horrible service and the food is mediocre at best.

Begum R.

Yelp
Terrible sushi. We ordered the lover platter for 2 and it was terrible. The fish for the sashimi tasted old and even the special rolls did not taste fresh. Way too much rice and you can tell the fish they use is not good quality. This shouldn't cost $50.

Daniel R.

Yelp
Got a chance to sit in an eat a few rolls. They made fresh, and the food tasted excellent. Also very attentive. Will be coming back or at least getting take out. Alaska Roll, Philly Roll, and custom roll. Also for people commenting about this being a "gem in the rough." Get with the times, Bergenline might not be Newark St in Downtown JC where you can fight conflict free vegan food, but we've had great restaurants up here for years. Don't jack up the rent so high while you stick around. Lol

Yelp
By looking at the place you would think it's your regular fast chinese food joint. It is definitely much more. This is Japanese food at its best. This was my 1st time visiting this establishment And I was not disappointed. 1st of all its family Owned. The chef putting attention to detail And flavor. I ordered a bento box (number 31) chicken bento. Steamed rice with Delicious chicken. A California roll included in this tasty dish. Also included was vegetable tempura And a tasty salad . Came back in November. Ordered the same bento box, it was loaded with sodium tempora vegetables were super greasy. I bought down their stars. Very disappointed. What more can you ask for?? 10.99? What a great deal for your money!! Definitely recommend this wonderful Japanese place And don't be fooled by the outside appearance. This is a must try if you're a foodie like me!!!

Michelle K.

Yelp
What a gem! Completely unassuming from both the inside and outside, this Japanese restaurant rivals most of the sushi joints I frequent in the city. We ordered steamed house dumplings, three rolls (American, Dragon Tempura and Mexican) and the unagi teriyaki, and each one was fresh, flavorful, generous in size and lovely in presentation. Nothing has been sitting around - everything is freshly prepared with care and skill. And that's not to mention the insane value of all the dishes. The only downside is that it's completely freezing in the restaurant - I imagine the grill provides heat to the employees, but I was left bundled up in my jacket. Nonetheless, for food & value alone, I can give nothing less than a 5-star review.

Sarie L.

Yelp
Wow, Ginger Grill was actually superb. It's in a perfect location and we were definitely pleased with our experience. All menu items seemed delicious, I had House Pork Dumplings and it was absolutely incredible. Staff are very helpful. They're accommodating, polite and always on their game. I can not say enough, but I think I have.

Orun W.

Yelp
I've been to high price sushi spots with low light ambiance and sultry music with water fountains and all. But not one has blown me away with it's menu such as this little hole in the wall spot. The food is fresh as it is tasty and beautiful an CHEAP:.) Next time I go I'll be sure to take pics as I usually do but I just get so excited everytime I get my food an go in immediately.

Yelp
Out of all the fine expensive Japanese spots I have visited by far this place is my favorite. I ordered brown rice and teriyaki chicken with side order of a salmon sushi roll, simple yet so good. I happened to it eat all that was on my plate which is rare since I normally don't get a chance to finish what's on my plate. The food was well portioned and just right to taste and to top it off it was so reasonably priced. Just the right amount of food for a good price. My visit was phenomenal , service was great well taken cared of and overall great atmosphere. The only set back about this place is one it's kinda tight spaced and when I was there it was so cold inside I had to keep my jacket on when I just wanted to get comfortable. Other then that do not get discourage by the front cover as they have great Japanese sushi and hibachi goodness food .

Pratibha K.

Yelp
Happened to be in the city with a friend who lives in the area and decided to try a sushi place neither of us had been to. I would say that the sushi was ok nothing phenomenal or a spot that I would want to revisit. The waitress could barely help when we asked for a recommendation on what was the most popular roll let alone what was her favorite. I ended up getting the red dragon roll and two spicy salmon rolls. I love tempura/flakes on my crunchy rolls but neither my friend nor I had asked for our spicy salmon rolls to have any on them. If I had ordered a crunchy roll I would've expected that but we just wanted classic spicy salmon rolls so it was kind of disappointing. I asked for a Thai iced bubble tea but they were out so I opted for lychee instead, and it tasted watery. Overall I'd say it was 3/5.

Yelp
I ordered a ginger garden salad and came home to find out that there's no tomatoes or cucumber in my salad. And the ginger dressing is all made of mayo. It's obvious they are cutting back. I use to go there a couple of times prior but I'll never go back. I had to go back and have them insert tomatoes but they refuse to give me cucumbers. Then the woman there proceed to tell me they were organic... wow what a joke!!! Don't bother going here. It's no wonder there no one going there

Janeth P.

Yelp
This place is close to my job so I enjoy the chicken teriyaki and the rolls are good. But the salads are not. They charged me 7 dollars for little pieces of lettuce and half an avocado in a small container. The disrespect.

Kelley P.

Yelp
Every time I order from here I love it more and more. Delivery, eat-in, pick-up, it's always great quality and so tasty! Our no fail order is sweet potato, ginger, kirin, and wny rolls. The ginger grill never disappoints. Bonus points for delivering on a bike in a crazy rain storm.

Jewels C.

Yelp
This place gets 5 stars from me!! The sushi is really good. I order from this place at least 3 times a week. Thumbs up for me, if your looking for good sushi then hit this place up

Christina H.

Yelp
Excellent food, friendly service, and clean arrangements. Much love, will return when I'm in the area again.

Marlene G.

Yelp
Tasty Great selection Fresh Inexpensive My go to for sushi and chicken teriyaki near the Weehwaken area.

Lexy R.

Yelp
It's not fun writing negative reviews, but the truth needs to be told. Not the typical sushi I am accustomed too and the eel (my fave to order) tasted more like salted cod than eel (yuck, just remembering the taste). Their non-sushi dishes where greasy and over sauced to mask poor quality of protein I'm assuming. Plus my hubby found metallic scrub pad threads in his chicken teriyaki (gas!) It's sad because they are very friendly and the waitress was very sweet and it is really cute inside (for Bergenline Ave.). But, regardless of all that, the really important thing to mention is that we both had very very very upset stomachs the next day.

Yelp
Looking for an amazing night of sushi? Are you interested in possibly tasting some of the best sushi in town? I am obsessed with this place. The owner is such an awesome person, he is very humble and loves to cater to each and every customer. He's the reason I'm hooked on the Lobster Roll, he recommended it to me and I have been in love ever since. For people who aren't to fond of sushi, they have Chicken, Beef, veggie Teriyaki dishes! Seriously great flavor! Don't forget to try any of their amazing apps.. I personally love the House Pork Dumplings or the Curry Puffs ! Check this place out, I love it and I'm sure you won't regret it !

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
Great food although delivery time takes forever. I've ordered from here for years and the chicken has been better before than how it currently is now.

Joyce L.

Yelp
This restaurant really is a gem in the rough! The exterior and interior is definitely run-down, but service is extremely polite and attentive, and the food was wayyy better than we expected. The unagi bento box was a big portion and very tasty. The tofu in the miso soup was yummy (soup itself was too salty). The tempura dragon roll was fresh and beautifully presented. The passion fruit tea also tasted authentic, which really surprised me because I have high standards for bubble tea.

Ann A.

Yelp
Eatable but not edible. Ordered a delivery the other night. Not only did they call me to say that a good half of my items wasn't available, but what I received was the worst food ever. Yuck. The brown rice smelled funky, the rest was just average, if not below. Never, ever again.

Jaime B.

Yelp
I gave this restaurant a 4 star review based on service, food, location and the fact that they deliver. Ginger Grill definitely breaks the monotony of restaurants along Bergenline avenue. A small Japanese restaurant serving a variety of dishes from sushi/sashimi to teriyaki and bento boxes. I recommend this place if you are in the area and are looking for sushi.

jose a.

Yelp
Awesome sushi place, the prices are very reasonable and the food is excellent, I was in the mood for sushi and I used yelp to find some sushi by where I was located at the moment this place came up and I have it a shot! Thank God that I did food is great and they have a special sushi roll which is now my favorite called "pink lady" must try this I would most def. Recommend

Luz M.

Yelp
Hidden gem!!! My friend's husband works in the area and has brought us ginger grill sushi before and it is always delicious. I did not realize they deliver, or that you can call ahead. a few weeks ago I called and ordered two rolls ahead and picked them up on my way home. Delicious! The tuna and shrimp were fresh and the rolls well made. I need to go back and try out some more of their rolls, as well as the bubble tea.

Paul C.

Yelp
Great place. I got the 3 rolls for $10 special and it was awesome Nice cosi enviroment and not expensive.

Diana H.

Yelp
Good prices. Great food. Love their bento boxes and sushi. Big fan of their chicken teriyaki. Not so much of the beef. People are friendly there. A lot of choices on the menu.

Dag C.

Yelp
Local place near the movie theater, we stopped there for dinner after seeing a movie. Very nice sushi and presentation, I wish there were other people there :) but is seems like its more of a delivery joint. you wont regret if you order there.

Silvya L.

Yelp
Small house ,huge in flavor ,great food made in front of my eyes can't get better than that. And is Byob that means the meal gets even better .well if you love sushi that's the place very good prices for well made food . Come and try it.

Maria Victoria I.

Yelp
We went there for a very casual lunch following the reviews and this is my opinion: 1. Food:I had one of the salads as appetizer with mixed "fresh" fish and my husband a miso soup. The soup was ok and the salad was not good, the fish was covered with some strange pepper, too overwhelming and totally overpowering the fish taste. The dressing was rich in mayonnaise which I personally don't like a all. 2. Roll: I ordered the red dragon roll which was actually much better than the salad, with a crispy end and a nice spicy touch but nothing to exciting either. I've had much better rolls in the area. My husband ordered a salmon sashimi platter but the salmon was not too fresh. 3. Bubble tea: that was the worst part of my lunch the bubble tea was so disgusting and extremely poor executed and bad quality that I honestly drank one zip and that was it!! In conclusion, is a place very informal to have an average meal without expecting anything else.

Maurice D.

Yelp
The teryaki chicken is cooked to the perfect crisp. You can tell the chef makes it with so much love and respect Namaste

Johanna Y.

Yelp
Best sushi spot in West New York. Cheap, delicious, and plenty of options. It checks all the boxes.

Ralph B.

Yelp
Sushi with a twist. WNY roll was a hit. Loved the differentiation on its preparation. Very good service and a variety on presentation.

Starlyn T.

Yelp
I was hungry and walking around and saw this small place and saw sushi pictures... I was like hmmmmmm in bergenline? maybe not that good or frozed crap. Then I enter place nice, very clean chefs nice dressed, I order a salmon bento. I sit and they start to actually cook everything is fresh and the gave me soup while waited in real plates no plastic bowl. I had a jasmine drink and my salmon bento everything yummy and cheap!! this is my sushi place from now on in this area!

Carmelina N.

Yelp
I order chicken teriyaki and beef teriyaki.... The chicken was good I liked the taste.... I can't say the same thing about the beef... It comes with mushrooms and the mushrooms weren't cooked well plus the beef took their taste n it was nasty

Alex L.

Yelp
Tasty Japanese food and very fresh plus healthy. Love the way they cook in front of you.

Andrea A.

Yelp
Delicious food, nice setup and veryyy courteous service. Best chicken teriyaki I've tasted! Oh and they give some delicious candies when they give u the bill.

Elaine T.

Yelp
This place is probably good for their grill. I ordered only the tuna roll and the sushi disappointed. It is an unusual combination of black pepper that is not familiar to regular sushi rolls I've e. I saw many people order the chicken teriyaki with rice- they were smart. I think the best choice is to stick to the grilled food. For sushi, maybe try a few doors down.

Mackenzie M.

Yelp
This place has the BEST sushi in the West New York/Union City area. Screw Teri Teri with their overpriced bad sushi. Ginger Grill is a bit pricey but it is totally worth it because you really get what you pay for. I come here for sushi when I don't feel like traveling far for some good sushi because it is close. The staff here is super nice and they are dressed really nice and the place is really clean. The interior is very pretty its black and red and even though it is small it has potential to grow. They should really think about a bigger location they would definitely make more money. Every time I come here it is packed and nice atmosphere. Spicy Salmon and dragon roll are my favorites, they should really add bubble tea to the menu because I would come more for that loll. I RECOMMEND coming here! byob too!

Stephanie M.

Yelp
loved the meal but this is my go to place for boba tea

Ksen L.

Yelp
Probably the best sushi place in the area. Have a nice variety of menu items. Food is always fresh. Tend to be slow with delivery. Also, they are closed on Monday.

Eduardo R.

Yelp
Was in the area and craving sushi. Very glad I checked it out. The sushi is very good and the staff is very kind.

Ryan D.

Yelp
Good quality delivery sushi! Wish the appetizers portion of the menu was a little bigger but ov5pretty good for a first run

Gustavo G.

Yelp
Great sushi from this place. I've been eating there for some time now and I've yet to be disappointed. There service is prompt and courteous. Their home delivery is awesome too. Plenty of times they've told me 45 minutes and yet they seem to show up 20 minutes later. Can't beat that!

Sasha I.

Yelp
5 stars because it delivers and doesn't take long at all! The avocado and cucumber rolls were great!

Genesis S.

Yelp
My go to Japanese food restaurant. Their chicken teriyaki is REALLY good and their California rolls are fresh. The only problem is that if you eat inside, the odor of the food will stick to your clothes because the kitchen is literally in the dining area. Either way, food's amazing.

Marcela G.

Yelp
spent $70 for nothing food taste horrible i dont know its because was delivery but the food yuck, order the shrimp teryake and some sushi definitely dont buy it again, and thanks for yelp reviews

Mariam O.

Yelp
This inexpensive place has best Sushi in West New York. I also like their chicken tarriaki.
