A Running List of the Best New Restaurant Openings in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Located in the new Canopy by Hilton, I saw Ginger Roux as a Creole- and Cantonese-inspired restaurant led by Jonathan Hostetler that nods to the hotel’s Chinatown history with inventive mashups like boudin lumpia, gumbo dumplings, General Tso’s alligator, and crawfish etouffee shumai." - Clair Lorell

We went to have a Birthday Celebration for lunch and was not disappointed. The Smash burger had layers of robust flavors and the kick of Asian mustard sealed the experience. Paired with some crunchy chips just hardy enough for lunch but light enough to keep you alert for the rest of the work day. The service was top notch and the General Manager, Mr. Kendal Toles, made our experience 5 star Michelin worthy. I can’t wait to come back for dinner. Economical and bountiful.

Ginger Roux is so delicious and definitely worth dining at! They have such a fun blend of Asian and Cajun/Creole cuisine, and the chef does an excellent job with putting it all together. I got the crawfish boil fried rice which was the perfect comfort food. Also the server/bartender is super sweet and informative. Definitely check them out!

Went last night and was blown away by the experience. Server was excellent. The server gave phenomenal recommendations of the crawfish boil fried rice and the gumbo dumplings. The chefs were generous with the crawfish and the robust flavors was amazing. The star of the show was the gumbo dumplings. I literally scrapped the bowl. The peppers within the dish were flavorful and added great texture. I’m really excited to take friends and family members to check out the phenomenal establishment.

BEST FOOD IN NEW ORLEANS. We could eat the gumbo dumplings every day. Chef Allen is phenomenal. BARTENDER FELISHA IS 100000/10, she is SO creative, drinks were the best we've had. Definitely our favorite place in the city.

Chef T and Bartender Barry were absolutely amazing! They showed great hospitality. These two helped navigate the menu, offer suggestions on what to visit in the city and offered great conversation. They are a true delight!

Chef Allen is the best! The Crawfish boil fried rice was amazing. Our food came out quick and fresh. Chef Allen even personally came over to the table to ask if everything was ok.

I’m a bit dubious when someone has 5 stars but Chef Allen so deserves it! Amazing, incredibly tasty food! Worth the walk (heck, I’d walk 10 miles for this!)

Great selection of signature cocktails. Try any food, but especially the alligator!

Yelp
Ambience and Experience: I was in NOLA for work and so wanted to stay close to my hotel during a few of my nights in town. This restaurant was located in the lobby of the Canopy Hotel. I was excited to try this place because online it mentioned that it mixed Cantonese and Southern Creole into unique and flavorful dishes. It sounded amazing. Unfortunately, when I visited, the menu had been paired down and only offered basic American fare. Food: The food wasn't terrible by any means. I got their house burger and it was a pretty decent burger. Big, flavorful patty and loaded with toppings. It just wasn't what I was looking forward to though. I'm was pumped to try their fusion cuisine and had to settle on something entirely different. Drinks: The bar offered a small menu but most people would just order call drinks, beer and wine. I ordered Hurricanes, which were mixed strongly with real fruit juices. That was a plus. Bar staff were talkative and friendly. Verdict: Are there better places in NOLA to eat at? Absolutely. I think the fusion menu would give this place a better opportunity to stand out in such a crowded field that you find in New Orleans but if you are looking for something fast and close to your hotel, this place isn't bad either. You can at least use up your hotel credits here!

Yelp
The most courteous bartender, waiting tables and serving at the bar... the drinks very good AND I had a veggie option, the pasta primavera! IF you like a spicy creamy sauce (which I do) enjoy this hotel restaurant. It was so good. More support for this awesome bartending/hosting/waitress... Brittany IS awesome!

Yelp
This restaurant is inside the Hilton near the bar. It's convenient for the people already staying at the hotel but otherwise doesn't have a free parking lot if you want to dine here. We ordered the steak dinner with brussel sprouts and asparagus. We also ordered the beignets with caramel sauce. The steak itself was very chewy and had a lot of tendon. The asparagus was almost cooked to mush and had no texture. The brussel sprouts were actually the standout of the meal. Perfectly roasted with some kind of honey sauce. The beignets were mushy with the caramel sauce on it so I wish it was on the side instead. But it was delicious! The bartender was very nice though and checked in on us even though she was busy.

Yelp
Not my favorite but may have just been off due to freak snow storm in New Orleans. Restaurant served its purpose of getting a meal when many businesses were closed or ran out of food. Food choices were limited but that would have been OK if service was good. Seemed staff were more interested in socializing with other staff than waiting on customers. It was convenient as restaurant was located in Hotel but big disappointment compared to other Canopy Restaurants. Food was Ok and nothing spectacular but served its purpose. Wish heat had been fixed as the dining room was not comfortable.

Yelp
I've tried almost everything on the menu during my stay at the Hilton Canopy and the only good thing they got is the Crayfish fried rice. It is top notch delicious but they make it different spice levels every time. The flavor is always good though. The brussels sprouts were good too but nothing to die for. The burger was also just ok but a tad too salty. things I would never recommend to my worst enemy is the brisket and broccoli and the yakamein. They're SO SALTY I had to rinse the food with water before I could swallow it. I hate to waste food but these 2 dishes got me really considering throwing it out. The pork buns are also super dry like bricks. I also got their eggs benny for breakfast and that was good. Not better than other restaurants but great for hotel food. Do yourself a favor and only get the crayfish fried rice. The food also takes at least 20 mins and not the 10 minutes they keep telling you.

Yelp
The Ginger Roux is the best Asian/Creole fusion cuisine I've ever had. If you ever stay at the Canopy Hilton, do yourself a favor and try something off the menu! It's very easy to only eat fried fish, red beans, or other traditional New Orleans cuisine. Trust me, this is different in a good way! There was little to no wait to be seated and they have a great patio area, so we sat outside! The staff and servers are all very nice. The menu is small but covers all the bases. We ordered the crispy chicken wings in Tso's Spicy and Hoisin sauce. Both were good, but we preferred the Tso's Spicy. So the next day (we obviously stayed at the hotel a few days), we went back to eat and this time we ordered the Crawfish Boil Fried Rice. We were a little hesitant because the food description had a little bit of everything. From crawfish, sausage, eggs, corn, and mushrooms! LISTEN!!!! This fried rice is sooooo GOOD! Literally a party in my mouth. My husband and I could barely stop stuffing it in our mouths! I can't even begin to explain how delicious it was, but we definitely went back the next day and ordered it again! We will be back soon to stuff ourselves full of fried rice again! Please note: the serving is large enough for two people to share and both be full!

Yelp
Delicious Breakfast. I enjoyed eating crawfish eggs Benedict here. Service proved friendly and the restaurant was not crowded, so service was quick. The restaurant ambience is alright. I would eat breakfast here again.

Yelp
The Ginger Roux, is a restaurant in the Canopy Hotel by Hilton. They serve a variety of Asian food. This restaurant does lunch and dinner. And also to go. The prices are moderate. This place does not do cash. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The hostess is usually the waitress. Meaning when we went the service was good. The restaurant is light and bright and clean.

Yelp
Chicken was good! Not too bad to come from the hotel. Overall a good dish. I did have an issue with my first order being burnt

Yelp
Did a last minute takeout order at the bar around 10:20 so can't talk about the dine in experience. Took the food up to my hotel room. The Chicken thigh had a nice flavor and came with a Salad that complimented it well. It says kimchi aioli but it doesn't really taste like Kimchi. It's still pretty good though. The Fried rice was solid. Had a good amount of crawfish, sausage, corn, and mushroom. The texture of the rice could've been better though. The menu says potato chips but I think they're wonton chips. They probably fit better with the dish anyways. They came seasoned and were a bit too salty. Overall I'd say the food here is a solid 4/5.

Lori M.

Yelp
My order tonight totaled $68.00. I ordered the veggie fried rice, brisket and broccoli, and the chili lime cucumber salad. The rice for the veggie fried rice was so hard and undercooked that it was inedible. The chili-lime cucumber salad was VERY spicy even though the menu did not indicate it was spicy. Also the brisket and broccoli i was given a container of mostly sauce and mushy broccoli. The sauce was very gingery and not good. I was very disappointed as this place has great reviews. Tried to call the restaurant to see if there's anything they can do but no answer. I understand it's the end of the night (ordered a little after 9 and they close at 10) but this food was super overpriced for what i got. I hate to waste food but it was pretty inedible.

Yelp
This review is for the crawfish boil fried rice, I ordered it as takeout. The portion is enormous!!! It's very tasty and well worth the price. More than enough for two or three people.

Yelp
We checked in to the Canopy Hilton and this amazing place was attached to the hotel. When we revisit New Orleans again we will for sure check this place out.

Yelp
Meat was hard as a rock, and it was slow cooked for hours. they was sold out of everything. I would stay at that hotel or eat at that restaurant.

Gerald A.

Yelp
Wow! Vegetarian fried rice dish with spicy sauce and crispy wonton croutons outstanding. We are getting the same thing again as take out. Chef Mike very kind!!! We aren't in the hotel, but across the street. This dish is yummy!

Yelp
We stayed at the Canopy Hotel and had a $100 credit that we planned to use towards appetizers at Ginger Roux. We were only there for the weekend, but the restaurant never seemed to be open during the posted hours. They only took to go orders from the hotel bar that was just outside of the restaurant. I guess I can't give any stars for the restaurant since we weren't able to actually eat there. We did order some drinks at the bar, and those were fine. The bartender was engaged in a conversation with a couple of people the whole time so we almost left without signing our check- I finally interrupted her so that we could leave. She seemed friendly, just not particularly attentive to everyone. We opted to use our remaining balance on snacks at the front desk.

Linda B.

Yelp
Service was great and the people who worked there were very kind. The ambiance felt like an upscale restaurant with European influence, especially for the breakfast part of the day. We got the French omelet and French toast for breakfast and vegetarian fried rice for dinner. The server messed up our breakfast order and accidentally gave us yogurt parfait but they were nice and gave it to us for free. The food was ok and I wouldn't say there was a lot of Chinese influence as a Hokkien Chinese person, but that might be a biased opinion since we couldn't have their meat options. I'd say the food was fairly priced for a vacation spot but I wouldn't pay it again unless we were staying at the same hotel as the restaurant.

Yelp
Would give 5 stars just for the bartender and chef alone - some amazing talent located in the bottom of the Hilton Canopy hotel. This is a newer restaurant with a modern New Orleans vibe. I love the idea behind the food, it's Asian fusion, but with a traditional Cajun twist. I could eat the fried rice for breakfast lunch and dinner, the flavor was the perfect balance of the Asian fusion with notes of Cajun and it was so so good. The lemongrass shrimp were just alright, as were the bean egg rolls. I thought the flavors were a little bland. The drinks on the other hand, nothing less than outstanding - great options across the board all with a unique pairing unlike anything I've tried before. Overall prices are pretty reasonable, drinks on the spendier side BUT if you come during happy hour the wine, beer, and canned assortment is super cheap. As we know, I'm all for a good happy hour. :)

Yelp
Very quiet on a Sat night, perhaps because tucked into hotel in business district? Delicious food and drink- Szechuan old fashioned with a bit of five-spice flavor was good start, and the crawfish boil fried rice was a huge serving of delicious mix of flavors and textures. Highly recommend, would love to return to try additional menu items. Friendly helpful server, and chef came out to see how we liked it all as well

Yelp
such a great dinner - beautiful staff - singing behind the grill - Great hotel Great restaurant

Yelp
Staying at the canopy hotel and stopped in for dinner last night. Food was excellent, drinks were delicious and the service from Riley was amazing. The Lemongrass Shrimp and Lumpia appetizers were great!! Got the crawfish and andouille fried rice as well. Was very impressed. Check this place out!!

Thomas P.

Yelp
Food was delicious! Open Kitchen that makes fresh meals and desert. Quality of food was excellent! Will definitely be back next time I'm in New Orleans.

Yelp
Everything we ordered here was better than expected! We ordered the hoisin wings and they were the best wings I've ever had! Also loved the bao buns and the general tso alligator was so good, the veggies tasted so fresh and it was a unique way to do alligator and came out amazing. The Yakamein was something I have not heard of before and am now obsessed! This was also the best soup I've ever had!

Kristin B.

Yelp
Lovely to find a vegetarian option. Nicely seasoned Brussel sprouts with green onion and black garlic vinaigrette

Pamela W.

Yelp
Delicious food and service. I had a wonderful BLT egg breakfast sandwich and first time to try. Did not disappoint.

Yelp
This food is nothing short of amazing. Louisiana and Asian fusion sounds weird but it was the most delicious dinner that we've had in a long time. Can't say enough good things about it. Try it and you will understand.

C R.

Yelp
Cocktails were excellent. The food was OK. They use a LOT of salt, that was the predominant flavor in the yakamein and the chicken curry fried rice. And, there was not a single piece of chicken in the chicken curry fried rice, perhaps it's just chicken flavored? The chicken wings were very good. In all, we won't be back for a while. It's a beautiful little place with what looks like an amazing kitchen. Maybe it will get better in time. They have excellent potential.

Eric H.

Yelp
The concept of Chinese Creole fusion is brilliant and this unlikely place, a part of the Canopy Hotel, tries to make it work. The menu is a little limited, but very inspired. The appetizers are the best story here- with wonderful lumpia a great dumpling gumbo and some cool dirty rice. The ideal of General Tso's alligator is imaginative, but the flavors don't all come through as much as I would have liked. The portions are plentiful and the vibe is relaxed. It is not a fancy white table cloth dining experience e, but it is worth a visit on a low key dinner night.

Emily G.

Yelp
Amazing mix of Cajun and Asian. I was unsure how this cuisine would present itself, but it had my taste buds dancing and it was delicious!!!

Rebekah L.

Yelp
Ate in this cute little spot and it was our first Gator eating experience and it did not disappoint! We had General Tso's gator and it was such a different but wonderfully special flavor. The server was so sweet and professional answering our questions and patience with weary travelers. Located in the Canopy by Hilton Hotel, it's worth making a special trip to try the General Tso's gator if that is part of your flavor game.

Fay E.

Yelp
Delicious food. Grits New Orleans style are always excellent. Clean. Reasonable prices. Friendly service. Small quaint setting.

Yelp
You would think that being situated downtown that the food would be good, when I say this food made me mad, the atmosphere was hectic, the cook was horrible to his staff, I have worked in my fair share of places and have never heard a cook speak to someone like that, felt like I was in the middle of the street, the chef ally or al, was talking to his staff like they were his kids and I heard one of the young men tell him please don't speak to me like that and he told the guy you can go home before I buss your xxx, I would expect if you speak like that your food would be good, the fried rice was salty, the gumbo was too thick was like a gravy, so i see he do not take any consideration of customers, seem like this restaurant do not want any business, and I had a sample of food from here one night last month and it was good must have been a different person cooking because you can taste the difference and another thing the cook talk too loud you could hear him talk about everyone that work there say the lead cook on cocaine and that his general manager is with multiple women yall looking for a lawsuit smh no one wants to hear gossip while they are eating , I will never eat there again!!!!!

Terricka W.

Yelp
When I tell my experience was horrible, the cook was the worst, I asked one of the workers his name Al or something, I hate when I'm somewhere and a manager belittle his employees, I was in there for a while and I feel like I know most of the hotel and restaurant business, if I knew who is over this restaurant number I would give him or her a call, the food was mushy salty, I was looking forward to eating after hearing good from my family that came in town, they told me that they were told most people comes when a certain cook is there, I think his name was Terry, or Ter, or Tai, sorry but he was spoken highly of I will try again hopefully the cook everyone speaks of is there because if the cook al is I will walk clean out, I had a stomach ache after eating that rice, the chicken and the gumbo was not cooked well, it was too salty.

Scottie F.

Yelp
Staying across the street. Tried the crawfish fried rice and cucumber salad. Both were excellent. Great food and service. If I lived local I would be a regular customer.

Noel F.

Yelp
So delicious, so unique, we happened upon this great find while staying at the Marquee on Elk. The lumpia, bao, and cucumber salad were so good we came back on the last night of our trip. It was quiet here and I could not tell you why, except it's hidden in the bottom of a hotel and perhaps folks don't expect it to be as good as it is. But it's very good. The second time we came we had the crawfish boil fried rice and the crawfish was tender and the rice was smokey and great, a little salty, but still very good. Grilled chicken thighs with kimchi aioli and chicken cracklin' we're as sinful as it sounds. Will be back!

Mark S.

Yelp
Can't say enough about our dining experience at Ginger Roux! We were enthusiastically greeted by the staff with a warm welcome and appreciation for having a large group to serve. Our group started with cocktails with names such as the Mandarin Margarita and a Szechuan Fashioned that were as good as they sound. The Chinese draft beer, a green peppercorn pilsner was delish.! The chef, Johnathan Hostetler came to our table and gave us an introduction to the food we would be having as well as reviewing any food preferences or allergies. The kitchen staff easily accomodated our gluten allergy and vegetarian requests. We ordered everything on the menu and ate family style, passing the fragrant dishes around the table for all to share. Every dish was delicious and unique. The sweet potato pie spring rolls for dessert were a perfect finish to a perfect meal. I would highly recommend this restaurant in a city known for it's restaurants, you will not regret your choice! Lucy Swingle

Yelp
A perfect day at the French Quarter Music Festival included dinner at the "yet to be discovered" restaurant in the Canopy hotel by Hilton. Located Just across Canal street from the French Quarter in what was originally the China town district. Executive Chef Jonathan Hostetler welcomed our party of seven and transported our long day of music into an adventure in sensual spices and favor combinations. From the opening salad of colors and wonderful tastes (my favorite, assorted pickled veggies mixed in), then a cabbage base crusted Chicken dish that melted in your mouth, on to the Dumplings in wonderful spices and sauce. Head-on giant shrimp in a bowl of barbeque infused sauce with chicken crackling on top was Messy-Good (warning if you wear white). There was Andouille sausage with Cantonese flavors in the fried rice! Note: Our Vegetarians enjoyed the meal with meatless versions too. "The other White Meat" -Alligator- in our main dish was so tender and accented with Broccoli that was crisp and tangy with "out of this world" flavors. For desert we ate Sweet Potato glazed Spring rolls (recommend eating them by hand and cleaning the dish with the Spring roll). I'm not the best at defining all the spices, but I can tell you it was one of the best meals I've been blessed to experience (Thanks Bill)...Oh, I don't want to forget the drinks! While I shared a wonderful bottle of Pinot Noir, others in the party dove into the house specialty drinks, Mandarin Margarita and Purple Rain (w/blueberries).. The spot is very new (no sign yet) so get there before it's "discovered". My mouth is watering from writing this :)
