I came across this cool little spot when my original dinner plans fell through, but I must that this was proof positive of everything happening for a reason since Gino's was a wonderful find! I was in North Beach with a friend and I was fiending Italian (aka my usual cheat meal). Tucked away into a little storefront on Collins Ave I've driven by who knows how many times, off we went.
The low key entrance and lack of signage - other than string lights - gives it very much a speakeasy or private dinner club vibe. The menu isn't over broad like my usual red sauce place but more like an artisan, focusing on a few yummy plates.
Their caprese salad opened this wonderful culinary experience. But this is not your usual slices of mozzarella and beefsteak tomatoes. This is a perfectly tart yellow tomato paste, an olive oil drizzle, and tomatoes red, green & yellow. Of course, there's mozz as well as straciatella as well as basil leaf garnish. Bravo!
My main course - ordered based on another review - was their lasagna. Picture & savor layers of al dente pasta, with melted mozzarella, juicy bolognese and bechamel on a tasty plate - in my case augmented with their homemade tomato sauce - and you have a dish that's flavorful while being healthy. Add some nibbles of their deconstructed mango cheesecake, with the tart sweetness of real mango and crispy graham crust, and you have a quality Italian meal.
Service was attentive the whole evening, whether checking on our plates or on recommendations. The full bodied chianti was delicious too!
Remember the comment on speakeasy? Having been out of the clubs for a whole year due to the you know what, I'm not good with faces but based on conversation I believe the folks sitting next to us were some famous, local edm producers. We even chatted about original locations for a rave, similar to how Paul Oakenfold had in the Great Wall of China!
