The 20 Best Spots In Northeast Philly

"This corner neighborhood shop does it all: pizza, hoagies, strombolis, oven-baked pastas, and shareable mains like veal piccata. This makes it a solid choice for everything from a platonic catch up with an old friend to an essential takeout option when you’re hosting game night. Between the wood booth seating and the long tavern-style bar, everything inside feels super old-fashioned. And from the novella-length menu to the excellent service, it’s a place that demonstrates what makes a throwback spot a classic." - candis mclean

Today I ordered The Flounder FRANCESE. The flounder was oh so good, and it melted in my mouth. I had enough for leftovers for diner, and again the flounder just melted in my mouth. There were three big pieces of fish, strings, and potatoes. My only complaint was there could have been more potatoes. The price I paid was awesome, and for the meals was great price for the money. I will definitely order this flounder again. I highly recommend it Thank you.

When people talk about a small family style eatery, Gino's is what they are looking for. It is the kind of place where the staff remembers you and jokes with you! My uncle brought me here a few months back, now I make at least one visit every time we come to Philly. (Tonight was our 2nd visit this week!) The menu has nice variety of classic dishes, pizza and specials. I have not had a bad meal yet. This time was the sword fish with risotto. Perfectly grilled fish with shrimp and asparagus risotto. Every bite was full of flavor. My husband devoured the Pescatore! We also love their carafes of house wine! Don't forget dessert! The Lemoncello marscopone cake caps a great meal. I rarely post food photos, but Ginos deserves that!

I have been coming to this pizzeria on/off for years- I NEVER knew there was a nice and cozy restaurant bar attached. This restaurant is so welcoming, the staff is incredibly friendly, and the food is MAGNIFICENT!! Pizza, wings, fries, bread, salad, Pasta, ALL DELICIOUS! My kids have made Gino's our Thursday eating place! It's Monday- I am looking forward to my next visit in a few days :-)

Have been here multiple times & have never had a bad meal. The pizzas, cheesesteaks, frys with real cheese whiz, meatball parm sandwich, gnocchi Sorrento & just ordered penne vodka for the first time 40mins before closing & is very very good. Perfect penne, gr8 flavored sauce. Always a great, affordable meal, friendly staff & quick service.

This place doesn't need a review. In fact I'm dissapointed at myself for not finding Gino's sooner. If you're from the NE, then you already know that's there's a pizza shop on every corner for every palate and at every price point. We were in the mood for pizza one week and decided to give Gino's a try. A little time has past since we had pizza and I was watching food reviews all night so now it was 9pm and I was really craving a slice. I made a call and 15 minutes later my pie was ready for pickup. First impressions...beautiful looking pie. I love the blisters on the crust and cheese. I ordered both mushrooms and sausage and there are ample toppings on the pie. Nice quality cheese with good amount of grease and plenty of pull with a little chew..which is how I like it. The sauce really shines, saucy with tomato flavor and finishes slightly sweet. The dough is slightly sweet with some nice air pockets. Not too doughy but with just the right amount of weight to hold a slice together. Service was fast and friendly and accurate. It's been 2 weeks and I've had pizza from these guys 4 times...(we usually only have pizza once a month at the most) already having also tried their wings and onion rings Pie with 2 toppings $15. Pro tip: Ask for thin crust and pepperoni. If you found this review helpful, then please click on the "thumbs up" icon below so that I can continue to provide useful reviews like this one.

Gino's is a great neighborhood place. The food is terrific. I think their spaghetti and clams is the best in the city, including places in Center City and South Philly where you will pay twice the amount

Google
Still my wife's favorite pizza spot. We occasionally drive 30+ minutes to grab a couple of their tomato pies, which are fantastic. Great pizza overall.

Google
Would like to start out saying service was great. We had a large order and everything came out perfectly. I had fries and a pepperoni pizza steak. Steak was full of meat but there wasn't very much pepperoni on it. Good size order of fries which were nice and crispy.

Yelp
If you are and EddienChooch follower, you may have seen him order from this establishment for the tradition called Pizza Crust Friday he started with his beloved pooch Chooch who recently passed. But as you can guess from the name this place probably serves other food items besides pizza. In fact there is a whole other section and entrance to just order and pick up pizza. I knew I was coming to Philly for a Library Conference and was planning to come here, with or without my co-worker. Now, if you want to have a Philly brotherly love I believe you have to go out of the City (like most places which are touristy). This definitely is a local place, that you can tell many local Italian folks make this their regular spot and they definitely if know you are an outsider. I'm from San Francisco with Pier 39/Fisherman's wharf is predominantly Italian and this place reminded me of the local joints in North Beach. However, we found the brotherly/sisterly love that Philly is known here at this place. Our server was really nice and helpful especially when we were deciding what to eat. My colleague is little picky with food, but we made it work. Entree came with soup, salad and bread. when she asked about the soup of the day it was cream of broccoli. She opted for salad and I opted for the soup. And I was not disappointed. It wasn't that soup out the industrial size can some restaurants use or over thick creamy gunk. The soup was made with a good consistency and real fresh broccoli and carrots, which was new for me and I'm here for it. She ordered Baked Penne and I ordered the pescatore linguine as I love all things seafood. Her food looked really good and she ate just about all of it and my linguine was the best I've had in a long time. Shellfood just right and the calamari not over cooked. I know I live in the San Francisco area, but I don't get out there that much and I usually order my fresh steamed crab and clam chowder. And of course I had to order a personal pizza as it was a Friday and pay homage to the tradition of PCF.. I was going to just order pepperoni, but then I saw sweet peppers as a option!. Ate it later that evening, and let me tell ya!!! It matched my local pizza joint I go to at home. I'm going to try to get back here before heading home. I highly recommend you take a side trip to this spot. The service, the food, and the price (significantly lower that in town).

Yelp
Great pizza & cheese steaks. Nice dining room with delicious food. We were there twice on Sundays for graduation parties when they are closed but rent out the dining room .Surprised by the $ of servers they had for the parties.

Yelp
I wish I had checked Yelp before visiting, especially after discovering the restaurant racked up 12 health department violations. Getting in was no picnic either--we had to navigate a noisy, trash-strewn sidewalk just to reach the front door. However, once inside, I was pleasantly surprised by the calm atmosphere. The pizza was surprisingly good. But the chicken parm was a letdown-- over-pounded, overcooked, and had that tough, woody texture (look it up if you don't know). The sauce was bland and forgettable. Bread was decent, and the honey mustard dressing was actually quite nice. But that's about where the positives end. Service was mediocre--pleasant enough, but far from attentive. When your server checks in at the 75% mark of your meal, it feels like an afterthought. (Or a, "We're getting close to the end of the meal when I get my tip.") Blonde woman with glasses. Bored. As if she couldn't wait to get home. All in all, there's no compelling reason to go back. Especially with those 12 health code violations reported here on Yelp--blech.

Yelp
After hearing more than a few great things about Gino's Pizza Cafe's non-pizza dishes, we decided to check out one of their chicken entrees.  Our office orders pizza just about every week from this restaurant ~ and never once have they disappointed.  The traditional and white pies are absolutely outstanding.  Not knowing what to expect, we opted for the chicken francaise.     Served with a salad, bread/butter, side of pasta ~ it was quite an incredible meal for the price.  The chicken was tender, very moist, light and lemony, cooked to true perfection.  The salad, side dish, crusty slices of Italian bread were plenty enough for two people!  Eat in, take out (packaged up hot and with such good care), quite a large menu, excellent staff ~ Gino's Pizza Cafe is an amazing gem of a restaurant.

Yelp
I only had the penne vodka ($11.95), which came with a (pretty decent sized) side salad and (pretty yummy) fresh italian bread. Bread came with butter though I dipped it in olive oil, salt & pepper and it was yummy. I had my order to go (picked it up since I am not in delivery area). They also have creamy italian dressing, which made me happy. I don't think I'd order the penne vodka again though. It did have diced onions (not super noticeable) and a little bit of pancetta (VERY little), but the pics of other pasta in blush sauce looked better. I didn't see gnocchi on the menu but the pics on Yelp look good. So for a pizza place, the pasta is good and I'm sure great if you are in the delivery area. Pizza also smelled good in there. But if I really want some yummy pasta, I'll get penne vodka at Marco Polo in Elkins Park or tortelinni ala tuscans at Tuscany Ristorante on Rhawn. Or if it's a special occasion, Macaronis. There's also some fun BYOB places in the area like Zaccones. Or if you want to travel to East Falls, Fiorino. CLOSED SUNDAYS (a lot of pasta places seemed closed on Mondays like Zaccones or Macaronis). I posted pics of the menu since they don't have a website & so you don't have to search on the internet :) Restaurant area must be different than take out area because the take out area I was in was small and didn't have any tables. Parking: There is metered parking outside. It's at Frankford & Aldine but Aldine is one way, so you can't turn on it to park from Frankford.

Yelp
Cheese steak was hot and fresh with plenty of steak on a fresh Philly roll! Fries were made to our asking, crispy! Cheese sauce added that extra goodness! Our waitress was awesome as always! Dining area plus a bar and a tv for those who want to stop in for a drink! Check them out!

Yelp
I had a sudden craving for pasta in white wine sauce. I searched on Google, Yelp, and Grubhub trying to find a place that delivers but using their own drivers. No offense to other platform delivery drivers and my apologies if you feel offended, with all the videos surfacing of folks eating customers food, I'm pretty nervous about that. I know for sure that the restaurant drivers will never touch the food they sign up to deliver, I trust them better in handling my food. I found Gino's Pizza Cafe on Frankford Ave. A little skeptical but my curiosity got the best of me. I order Linguine Pescatore in white wine sauce. And hub try their pizza. The cashier told me it would take 40 minutes to receive my food, and it actually did take exactly 40 minutes. My entree arrived very hot but my hubby's pizza was luckwarm. Like did they baked the pizza first and let it sit while they start cooking my pasta dish??? My linguine pescatore was bland too. I had a similar dish somewhere in Bucks County and it was delicious, I guess I'm looking for a alternative closer to home, this is not it!

Yelp
Hidden gem in northeast Philly. Fkd and cottman. Go here like 5 times a month. Great food. Good service. I'm telling you, you will not be disappointed!!!!!!!!!! Very very affordable. Best place in the NE

Yelp
Excellent service, along with delicious entrees. Deserts are so good, you want to break the plate and clean it off. My new spot for sure. Ambiance is on spot.

Renee R.

Yelp
Great pizza!!! I look forward to trying other things here!!! Wish they had milkshakes and desserts.

Katherine T.

Yelp
My family was there tonight for my daughter's birthday. We always go the food and service are great. Tonight the waitress was horrible we waited an hour for our food and the food did not taste good. The waitress was unprofessional at the next table eating off their plate and talking to them. If we go again and get that waitress I will request another.

Gianna M.

Yelp
My service with our server Irelynn was fantastic. She was patient with us and showed how customers should be treated. I will definitely be coming back and asking for irelynn again. Another table was giving her a hard time and she did the best she could with them as well as everyone else she was serving. 10/10 service. Thank you irelynn.

Taariyq G.

Yelp
The pizza is very good and the service is great. You can tell they are excited and confident about the food they serve.

Yelp
Love the pizza here. They make it how I request it every time. It's convenient and they have great customer service.

Yelp
I raved about the pizza until I realized how RACIST they actually are. First I was told they couldn't deliver to me anymore because the pizza delivery guy couldn't find my address and called me several times with no answer. I offered to pay the driver to redeliver due to miscommunication and even compensate for the pizza . The owner was rude and said "no plus it's cash only " and that I'd get one more chance to order there despite me being a weekly customer. I ordered there one more time- my boyfriend who is black opened the door for the delivery driver and my receipt said "pick up ONLY." Red flag... I ordered delivery again and was told on the phone "we don't deliver to apt complexes" by a young woman. I'm other words they neighborhood "must be bad...because a black man opened the door and a regular customer couldn't get to her phone in time to redirect their driver when he called. Don't EvER order here ..they are racist pieces of fecal matter. Go to Monteseni pizza or Mayfair pizza.

Yelp
True NY pizza, for me anyway living in Philly. As a NYer we have a certain tastes when it comes to pizza. Thin, crunchy, cheesy(but not too much), saucy, all around great! Went fishing the other day, decided to grab something to eat on the way home and found Gino's. There are some pretty good pizza spots in Philly but Gino's was the closest I've found to home. Haven't tried any of their other items but I'm looking forward to it. Keep it up guys.

Angela H.

Yelp
Best pizza pasta salads ever they are affordable and consistent always mouth watering delicious and enough food for thirds and fourths!!! My absolute favorite place to eat!!!! Everything is delicious no matter what you choose! I am addicted to their chicken cacciatore yyyuuummmmmm!!
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
This was supposed to be chicken Marcella. Looks like they forgot the flour and the pan to give it a golden nice color. I got some baked chicken in flavored buttery water, definitely will never order again from here. Shame too because I really enjoy the soup they have there.
google avatar

Andy L.

Yelp
Decent pizza! The dough is light and airy. Good cheese to sauce ratio. Overall flavor is a little on the blander side but still good!

Brittany A.

Yelp
What is genos delivery fee? I'm new in Philadelphia and Heard how amazing they are but very pricey
google avatar

Sherry A.

Yelp
Called to order delivery and was told that my address was too far but i am in the same zip code as this place and it's literally not even 10 mins from my house. I would pick up but after reading the reviews about other loyal customers who has ordered from there and then was told later it's too far for delivery , I am ordering from Mayfair Pizza
google avatar

Bob P.

Yelp
My family have ordered here many times ... called this evening (we just ordered a couple days ago... but the person that answered the phone said not sure with we deliver there I laughed and said we are once a week from you she said she came back on the phone and said we don't deliver there at far I said I order all the time this is crazy she said she asked... i would never order from this place again and recommend they treat their loyal customers better.... This place is crossed of the list...

Yelp
We just ordered from here last night got a large pie a cheesecake chicken tenders and fries I know there are pizza's great I will do there all the time but I don't order anything else I'm gonna tell you why Because we got sick a few months ago from their cheesesteaks So my stepdaughter got a cheesecake last night and she got sick God's sake and she ordered a Buffalo chicken cheese steak and they just squirted a couple drips of Buffalo sauce on top of the cheesecake who does that Their pizza is great but everything else is horrible it's horrible horrible they're chicken tenders weren't even good their fries were nasty nasty I don't know who they got cooking back there but this place sucks if you're getting something other than pizza
google avatar

Yelp
My mom had mentioned to me that she ordered dinner form here, a few weeks ago. So the following week I decided to do the same. Placed an order for two entrees. Was told pick up in a half hour. When we got there exactly 30 minutes later, everything was ready and the transaction was very easy. They were doing pickups out front of the restaurant. You pay when you get there. Got home and the order was exactly as ordered. Food was hot and we were very happy with our choices (eggplant Parmesan and chicken Parmesan). Everything was very good and I had lunch the next day as well because the portions were large! Would definitely order from this restaurant again!
google avatar

Jen W.

Yelp
Some of the best pizza in the area, right behind Vince's ;) The wings are always perfect, apps are tried and true and when it isn't busy, you have to try the half tomato half white for a taste of both worlds. So good! Dine in and take out options. Haven't had a meal I didn't love here.
google avatar

Alex F.

Yelp
I ordered the Italian Hoagie ($6-$7) and my wife ordered the Chicken Caesar Salad ($9). As a person from NYC I must say, the prices I paid at Gino's was incredibly affordable!! What was even more amazing was possibly the best Hoagie I ever had!!! It was incredibly huge, messy, dripping with oil and vinegar, mayo, packed with all the fixings, and tasty onions! WOW!!!! Sadly, my wife salad fell short, she said her chicken was overcooked and dry as hell... :( But since this is my review, and my Hoagie was amazing!! I get to give you guys 5 stars!!!! Please try to get your chicken Caesar salads on point for when I force my wife to come back to your establishment!!!
google avatar

Joseph H.

Yelp
Best spot around!!! The service & food are hard to compete with. Very clean & the sweethearts that take your order make the experience even better
google avatar

Christopher F.

Yelp
Hey degenerates, i wanna put you onto a thing at Ginos. Their cheesesteaks are fantastic. Makes you wanna take some of your grandmoms money from her purse and go order some to sit in her basement and play some Call of Duty while munching on that perfect sandwich. Customer service is excellent, and they are welcoming THE GOAT GOD KING HAS SPOKEN
google avatar

Bob H.

Yelp
I haven't been to Gino's in probably 15 years since I moved. The place hasn't changed a bit and its still as good as I remember. Stopped this past Saturday night for a personal pizza. It was good! I went with a personal with garlic and oil. Cooked just right and reasonably priced. You can ask for much more from a neighborhood joint. They offer beer to go and a full dining room as well. Solid place to grab a pie.
google avatar

Robert M.

Yelp
When in doubt, go to Gino's! That's what we always say at our house, when we can't decide what to eat we go to Gino's. The pizza is really good and tasty, but the real stars of the show are the pasta dishes. Their Chicken Parm dinner is great and a big portion, the gnocchi in the blush sauce with crabmeat is always are personal favorite of mine. Plus the bread is a fantastic side to have with your meal, oh and don't skip on the wings and fried calamari.
google avatar

Natalie S.

Yelp
Everything is good here fresh ingredients and great Italian food for a pizza store. The prices are reasonable too.
google avatar

Alison H.

Yelp
I've spent a better part of my life living around here but never tried out Gino's. After a strong recommendation we ordered a pizza with onions and mushrooms, as well as a side of fries. I came at the estimated time to pick-up, and sat down as the counter lady said my order wasn't ready yet. I sat for about 10 minutes until they called me up. I really don't mind waiting at all, especially if the food is good! But there was a weird unwelcoming vibe, which is very rare in my experience with restaurants. When I got back with my order, the pizza was barely warm and the fries were way overcooked. How do you screw the basics up? Granted, the pizza had a decently light flavor profile. If you're down for a mild tomato sauce, you'll probably like the pies here. Overall, the service was not good. The food must be really on point if cooked properly, but that was not the case for my order either.
google avatar

Mike F.

Yelp
I've tried a number of different spots in the neighborhood and Gino's is always my go to for pizza. Even when my parents come to visit they always want Gino's, they love it. I look forward to coming in for dinner soon at the cafe to try your amazing dishes I've heard so much about!!
google avatar

Jason V.

Yelp
Best pizza in Mayfair! Always fresh. Always hot. Always crispy. Claudio has the golden hands that make these pies perfect. Plain, pepperoni, mushroom, all on point but the secret underrated gem is their tomato pie. Their sauce alone should be sold in jars! Everyone knows the rules, 8.1 , no rookie scores, it's the truth!
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
I have been ordering from Gino's for years - I used to live around the corner & have worked in the area twice. I have to admit they have some of the best grilled chicken around! Sometimes salads are very watery, but their grilled chicken is always good. Many lunch places around who offer chicken and none come close to Gino's. Thanks!
google avatar

Albert K.

Yelp
Good pizza, great dough and sauce, maybe a little to much cheese. Grilled chicken sandwich wasn't bad either.

Jessica M.

Yelp
Called 15 minutes before they closed to place an order and they asked if it was my first time ordering then said they normally don't take first time orders this late at night..... very bizarre
google avatar

Robert E.

Yelp
I am literally sitting in the restaurant eating right now, and I can honestly say that this is the best gnocchi I have ever eaten. My wife has repeatedly said, "This is the best Fra Diavolo sauce I have ever had." Seriously folks, if you've never been here, get here now. My new go-to Italian place.
google avatar

Monica L.

Yelp
The best pizza closest to me! I enjoy their dining room area as well. Their platters are great!

Vanessa M.

Yelp
Ordered white pizza and spaghetti and meatballs. The pizza flavor was garlicky which I like. Only way much cheese. Why? Imagine asking for extra cheese oh my goodness. Clogged arteries!! Next time, if I order I'd ask for thin crust and light on the cheese. Flavor was there just after 2 slices couldn't eat no more way too much cheese ugh. My spaghetti was ok only had a few bites. I added crush red pepper flakes because it was bland.
google avatar

Brie S.

Yelp
Pasta is a WIN!! Pizza is basic from my opinion. But this is my go-to spot when is want great pasta.
google avatar

Ben P.

Yelp
I and my wife usually eat in the restaurant and the food is always excellent. I'm a creature of habit so I have my usual pizza or cheese steak place. Well we just ordered deliver and I had the best cheese steak I've had in forever. The calamari as always was awesome everything was great. The delivery time was fast the service was amazing. I'll be ordering way more from them as well as eating in. Plus special thanks to my delivery guy John was a nice guy even if my dog knocked the money to the floor and his tip got left on the floor sorry for the mix up and thankfully I did get the tip to him after I realized. He was even more gracious to understand the mix up. Look if you want high quality food order from Gino's.
google avatar

Robert J.

Yelp
Wow, Gino's Pizza Cafe was really awesome. It's kind of the place to go in this neighborhood. Absolutely delicious! Every single thing is super fresh! Staff are incredibly lovely and service is very fast. I can not wait to return to Gino's Pizza Cafe.

Kay M.

Yelp
Gino's is my neighborhood go to!!! The quality & consistency never disappoints!! Thanks for having veal saltimbocca on the menu!!!
google avatar

Sharon S.

Yelp
Well let me just tell you ‍you get what you pay for Gino never let you down don't matter what you get I order a Buffalo chicken pizza and I'm telling you it makes your wanna smack your mama good and I'm upset that I had to share it with my 3 boys and my granddaughter...... well maybe not my grand but I love this spot and if your hungry and want great Quality food do yourself a favor and order here you won't be mad but you'll thank me later ‍fives across the board
google avatar

Tatiana C.

Yelp
This pizza was really good. I felt like I was eating pizza from my old neighborhood in NY. I was looking for a pizzeria close to my job, so Yelp sent me here. I ended up passing by a couple of pizza shops before I got here. I'm glad that I didn't change my mind and grab any old slice.

Jeremy B.

Yelp
If Jesus Christ came back reincarnated as a pizza it would be this places cheesesteak pizza and their buffalo chicken pizza. I'd put my grandmom in a headlock for a slice of either of these anytime. Don't ever change the recipes and I promise I will blow my future retirement fund on this place and it's pizza if it ever falls on hard times. Thank you that is all.
google avatar

Cara S.

Yelp
I can't believe this place is in Mayfair!! It's so good. Old school Italian my gnocchi were fantastic.. The bread OMG!! This will be a regular dinner spot for me!!!
