Stopped in again after far too long away (though I did have some delicious take-out meals from here during my pandemic isolation) and was so happy to see little has changed at my favorite Italian restaurant. Greeted by Gino at the door, drinking in the good news that this and the Round Rock location were both still doing well despite the challenges of 2020, I took a seat at the bar and chatted for a bit with Gino and the bartender, like family does after an absence.
The dining room has fewer tables, well-spaced still, and masks are in evidence, but otherwise all is the same as it ever was: a great wine list, homemade Italian dishes in classic style without being fussy, and friendly family service, personified by Gino himself. I sipped on a robust Zinfandel and enjoyed my escargot starter, then dug into the seafood ravioli "Ravioli di Arogosta e Gamberetti" in a rich Cardinale Sauce. Al dente perfection, with a delightful mix of crab, shrimp and ricotta cheese in black pasta. Piping hot, perfectly seasoned, delicious.
Gino has been working on his own in house desserts, and I tasted the heavenly classic cheesecake, rich, but light and creamy, and a bit of their new house-made gelato as well. Perfect topper for a perfect dinner.
Though still doing a robust take-out business, it was nice to sit down and dine-in with old friends, trade stories of the year we have all endured, and cheer the deserved success of an Austin culinary gem. Tucked away in the corner of the building that houses the Marriott Residence Inn at Lancaster & 51st, this is Italian food worth seeking out!
