The Best Restaurants In San Jose - San Jose - The Infatuation

"There are plenty of hit-or-miss banh mi spots in San Jose, but Duc Huong, which has four locations across the city, is never off its game. With consistently crisp yet pillowy french rolls, plus pickled and julienned veggies with a perfectly tart punch, there’s virtually no way to go wrong. While we're partial to the grilled pork, you can pick from 17 banh mi options in small or large sizes (the latter will set you back an astonishingly low $10 or less). Before you order, check out the fridges and shelves that are full of great pre-made snacks like steamed pork buns and sticky rice cakes." - shoshi parks

Google
This is a food to-go shop with a great selection of Vietnamese dishes that are perfect for a quick and satisfying meal. I particularly enjoyed the snail sausage, cinnamon sausage, and the various sweet soups, which were all flavorful and delicious. While the food is designed for takeout, the atmosphere inside the restaurant is still pleasant and welcoming. I appreciated the fun touch of the display of poems on the glass cabinet, which added a bit of personality to the place. The service from the staff was friendly and efficient, making the experience all the more enjoyable. Although the selection may be limited at times, the quality of the food makes up for it. If you're looking for a tasty and convenient meal on-the-go, this restaurant is definitely worth checking out. I recommend the snail sausage - it was cooked to perfection and had a great balance of flavors. Overall, a great experience at this food to-go spot.

Google
I dont know how they can get away without paying Tax is beyond me lol. Cash only establishment. The patties and food are the best. They never run out. But They close 6pm Daily.

Yupeng G.

Google
This is a counterfeit Duc Huong shop, I came here at 11 am on Friday and they said they don't have any more sandwiches. So don't be fooled.

Jonathan P.

Google
Duc Huong Gio Cha in Sun Plaza is a solid choice for Vietnamese sandwiches, offering freshly baked bread and well-balanced fillings. Their signature cold-cut bánh mì stands out, featuring smooth pâté, flavorful cha lua (Vietnamese pork sausage), and crisp pickled vegetables. The balance of textures—soft, crunchy, and rich—keeps this spot reliable for a satisfying bite. While service is efficient, peak hours can lead to slower turnaround times. Some visits may feel rushed, with minor variations in ingredient proportions, but overall, the quality remains consistent. If you're craving a classic bánh mì with authentic flavors, this shop is worth stopping by.

Google
should've read reviews 1st. CASH ONLY and NO BANH MI. the lady didn't speak my language but the other one did she was very nice bout it. place is poppin bread flying out the door. aparking might need patience

Thi D.

Google
The cha here is the best, authentic flavor and good prices. Call ahead to place large orders, then come pickup. We ordered 80 cha to take home out of state.

Nelly V.

Google
Bad service, the cashiers there are very rude to customers. Never come back again

H D

Google
Horrible customer service. We will never be back. The cashier didn’t even bother answering me when I asked to buy cha lua. She acted like I was bothering her. What kind of customer service is that? We were there to spend money not asking for money. Wondering how they are still in business.

Yelp
Service= 3 stars: - All the cashier ladies need to be a little more friendly like put on a smile. - It's 2025 and this place still accept cash only! Food= 4 stars: - Cha lua, cha chien are very good. You don't get that tart aftertaste like other places. - Cha Que (cinamon pork roll) - flavor is good but texture is too rubbery compare to their other pork roll.

Yelp
Left without a Banh Mi. Skip this location and go to the one on Story road! This place has no line. It's just clusters of people going straight to the cash register without a care for other people's attempts at waiting in a proper line. I got to the cash register (finally) and ordered a Banh Mi Dac Biet (cold cuts) and was told to grab one from the shelf. A tiny pre-made Banh Mi? That's definitely not what I come to Duc Huong to buy. By the time I took a few steps to grab the Banh mi and turned around, 3 people were at the cash register. I wasn't going to wait to get to the front again for a room temp sandwich. This place badly needs some organization. There's also no menu for other Banh Mi variants. I wanted to order a Banh Mi with pork belly but there was no way for me to confirm if that even existed at this establishment without waiting in the crowds of people to get to the front again.
google avatar

Julienne P.

Yelp
Still the only place that has the best cha in town. It's always warm when we buy it and so tasty the family often eats a whole roll before the main meal. We usually order cha lua but this time we needed cha Huế and it's even more flavorful. It's CASH ONLY, so come prepared to hand over a was of cash!
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
Food for the price is great. Reasonable. Long lines on the weekends. Service only accepts cash. ambience it's a great deal. would buy for New Year's again.
google avatar

Edwin R.

Yelp
Hole in the wall for that specialize hard to find Vietnamese food. They're famous for their fermented meat, frozen meatballs (which are so good), Pork roll, and several other a Vietnamese food I don't know how to translate. LOL :p. They're located in the strip mall next to other Vietnamese places to shop including a supermarket. Plenty of parking but it can get very busy during weekends and especially holidays like TET New Year. Prices are reasonable. Highly recommend. Cheers!

Vannie D.

Yelp
Do not go here. Be kind to yourself and drive to the one on Story, which has slightly better customer service. It's like service flung itself into a black hole and went into extinction here. I stopped by at around 1:45 pm on a Sunday to order bánh mì. The lady at the register haughtily tells me in Vietnamese, "I DO NOT HAVE SANDWICHES." What do you mean you don't have sandwiches? She repeats the same line, "I DO NOT HAVE SANDWICHES." So I went to Huong Lan sandwiches to give them my business instead. This will be my first and last time here. With so many options around, don't go here only to get pissed off.

Lyhai T.

Yelp
1. They only accept cash when you walk in, even though their page says they accept Apple Pay and credit cards. This is misleading. 2. The cashier had a bad attitude and provided poor customer service.
google avatar

J W.

Yelp
Beware! Accepts Cash only. Came here during lunar new year and it was unorganized, people cutting in lines eventhough there was a security guard. Rude customers and customer service. These kind of businesses that accepts cash only should be monitored. It's easy to not report their earnings and pay due taxes. Definitely will not be back. Food mediocre, nothing good or special.

Vc D.

Yelp
The two middle aged ladies at the front counter IS VERY RUDE. Talking with attitudes and very unwelcoming. I can understand if I came in disrespectful but I came in with the upmost respect and they just treat everyone like they are trash. Even when giving back change there's an attitude. It's just so crazy! Please review to them about good customer service.
google avatar

Tony B.

Yelp
The line to get into this place stays long on the weekends. I ordered four Bahn Mi sandwiches over the phone and avoided the line when I got there. You get one free when you order four. Price very reasonable and Bahn Mi is delicious!

Kim D.

Yelp
Cash only! They are impolite and this is the worst DH location. I am surprised that these cashiers are DH family and they are just rude.
google avatar

Bao P.

Yelp
Sandwich is good, I got a number 7, but when I asked for extra mayo they wanted to charge me an extra 1.50$ which is ridiculous

Margartia C.

Yelp
People have the audacity to hang up on you the moment they hear you speaking English. Absolutely appalling customer service.

Yelp
Mmm, one of the best viet sandwich spots out here. Crispy, freshly baked bread, reasonable wait time, and delicious, well-seasoned meats. My aunt said there's typically a long ol' line here (45 min), so she was uber excited when there was no line when we walked in at noon, on a Saturday. Most sammies are $7, with the exception of the grilled beef, at $9.50. They ask if you want everything on it, but you could easily ask for the veggies/jalapeno on the side, to avoid a wet sandwich, if you're not eating it right then and there. Thank you to the young lady who tried to tell the sandwich-makers to do that after I put in my order 6-minutes earlier, and forgot! There's good meat to veggie to bread ratio, which is super important. They use the fatty French rolls, versus the long, thin baguette (which is typically my preference). The cafe sua da was a bit pricy at $6, but it gave me my greatly needed caffeine boost. Very strong. This is the fam's new favorite sammy spot; I shall return. Maybe the most important part of this review is that, at the time of this posting, it's buy 4, get 1 free. You're welcome, and happy eats! =D

Caitlin L.

Yelp
This is my favorite banh mi shop in San Jose. I don't come here expecting 5 star service but every interaction I've had here has been courteous and efficient. I always order the grilled pork banh mi, it is a generous portion for a reasonable price. There's always a bit of a wait because this place is extremely popular. I would highly recommend.

Yelp
I saw that other locations took large orders for catering so I called this one to see if they could do catering. A lady picked up and said, "Duc Huong." I tried to ask her if they do catering but she couldn't hear me and started speaking to me in Vietnamese asking me, "What do you want?" Eventually she said I have the wrong number and hung up. I called back because I thought my AirPods weren't connected so maybe she couldn't hear me. This time she didn't say "Duc Huong" when she picked up and when I tried to ask if they did catering she said I have the wrong number. I asked "Is this Duc Huong? Do you guys make sandwiches?" but she hung up on me. I decided to try a third time, this time from a my work phone, and I was going to attempt to speak my broken Vietnamese but they didn't pick up even though the call was coming from a different number. I ended up calling a different location, further from me, and the lady there told me they don't do catering. If anyone knows a place who can make 100 banh mi's for an event, hit me up.

Sue L.

Yelp
I've been coming here for a few times the last couple of years but lately the owner (female) and another older female worker with a Northern accent has a major attitude with scowling faces. Makes me not wanting to return to this place ever. The cha here is decent, better than Lee's sandwich or Huong Lan. They have fewer selections and option and it's a cash only establishment. This place is nothing more than a grab and go type a place, not a typical dine in place with a nice ambiance. With the not so friendly owner and staff, you are better off at their Story Road location. Staff is much nicer, more options and they accept credit card. You can call ahead to order and get your Vietnamese coffee fix. This place deserves 2.6

Yelp
Best CHA LUA in the Bay. CASH ONLY of course. It's $7 for a roll of Cha Lua now and also $7 for a tub of Gio Song (raw grounded pork paste) Lines can be hit or miss depending on when you come but if you know what you want, you are in and out.
google avatar

ThuyTrang N.

Yelp
They sold me an expired "banh gio" today. I will not return to this location. They sold me an expired "banh gio" today. I will not return to this location. They sold me an expired "banh gio" today. I will not return to this location.

Yelp
Not sure why their reviews are low! They have the best cha lua around! It's a bit pricey, I believe I raised their prices. However it is a small mom n pop shop and we're in a pandemic so I don't mind supporting :) It used to be $5, but now it's $6.50. I like to buy the regular cha lua, and the peppered one (same price).

Sang N.

Yelp
Bad services store. Not friendly employee. Not good price also. Stop shop with this. Their employees are their family and relative members so the employees thinking they all are patronage of the shop then came out with the mistreated to customers, considered begged customers without respects.
google avatar

Lyly M.

Yelp
The customer service here is horrible. There are so many Vietnamese sandwich shops in the Bay Area that provide great customer service. I tried to place a sandwich order by phone, but after hearing the tone of the lady who picked up the phone, I told her thank you but I will order somewhere else. I can't believe operating any businesses with poor customer service skills. I would rather order food from a robot.

Doan D.

Yelp
I stopped by here to buy some pate. I asked one of the employee and she don't even look at me. I respond at me. She just look at me all crazy and said tomorrow this place is terrible. We come back.
google avatar

N Q.

Yelp
What can I say? Okay, they offer the best variety of chả (pork rolls) in San Jose, made fresh for decades. Even delis and restaurants buy from them to create accouterment for their dishes and sandwiches. I have seen many other patrons get mistreated, but I have never personally experienced the same. They are never short of customers still rolling back in for their chả despite popular reviews. They are the "chả nazis." My suggestions are to wear your KN95 mask, tie your hair back really well, walk in with a strong game that you will quickly choose what you want, don't ask questions, and don't look at the ladies behind the counter in the eyes more than two seconds, filter out any yelling going on around you, hand over the appropriate cash amount once they tallied your total, walk out quickly because you will enjoy that chả stash you have just scored. They are a bit pricey compared to other chả places, but many see why. Pork rolls (chả) variety, freshness, and quality: 5 stars Variety of snacks, food tray options, and quality: 4 stars Service: 3 stars

Holly L.

Yelp
Hopefully the boss can read this. This place has some of the rudest people doing customer services, they seem to look down on elderly who buy just a few things, super rude attitudes, anger faces to customers when asking questions about the items , especially the cashier lady with the North accents. She was so rude to my mom we don't want to come back there even our home is minutes awhile from this place. Please educated them people or take them off the counter.
google avatar

Yelp
Nơi này lề lối phục vụ của họ làm cho người mua có cảm tưởng như đi xin. Rất là không có thiện cảm! San Jose không chỉ có Đức Hương! Phách lối! Take your money somewhere else! Đức Hương is not the only place in San Jose! Their customer's service is pretty bad. They do have an attitude!
google avatar

Tina N.

Yelp
Mama and relatives hot spot! Selling variety of things: - Cha Ca (Fish paste, fish sauce, salt, and sugar) $6.50 - Nem Nuong (Pork and fish sauce) $5.50 - Bo Vien Gan or Khong Gan $6.50/lb - Pate $7.00 - Bi (Shredded Pork) $8.00/lb - Gio Song (Pork Nad Fishsauce) $4.25 Cash only. Need I say more?

Lan N.

Yelp

Everyone in my family had been cheated by this store (on King Rd), especially the short lady about 50 years old and she's very rude. Whoever buys here needs to mentally added up the total. Otherwise they will over-charge you then you will be so pissed once you get home and realized their dishonesty.

Bella B.

Yelp
Best banh mi in my opinion. I love how crunchy and fresh the bread is. My favorite is the steak banh mi.
google avatar

James T.

Yelp
I have been coming here for the Vietnamese cha lau for over 5 years. Each time I have a visitor from out of town I would recommend them to come and buy the cha here since it's fresh and better quality than many places. However, I have to give this place a 1 star for their customer service. Every time I come here and happen to order from this one particular lady here (late 40 mid 50 year old); I get the worst attitude and treatment. I thought it was just me. Today I took my aunt from out of state to buy some cha and dried pork floss for her gift back home, this same lady behind the counter had the most disrespectful and upset look as usual. My aunt asks the price for the large pork floss, the lady stares back and angrily mumbles back something we could not hear or understand. She would grunt and ignore us. Luckily there was another older lady working there who helped us. I don't write lots of yelp reviews. I hope the owner of this business would give feedback to this lady and let her know the customers are just there to buy and and return help the business and give her a job.
google avatar

Kim D.

Yelp
Hole in the wall but their Cha Lua is one of the best . It's been here for years ,weekend there a line out the door
google avatar

Quan D.

Yelp
The worst VN customer services. They are rude and very unprofessional people work here. Stay away if you don't want these people piss you off.
google avatar

Jennie D.

Yelp
Good place for your Cha Lửa, Cha Chiến, Cha Hue, Nem. Other locations sells their sandwiches. Lunar New Years, they have lines out the door.
google avatar

Judy V.

Yelp
My go to spot for cha lua but the lines are always ridiculously long. Not sure why people spend more than 5 minutes in this shop because the cashiers are not friendly, they just want quick transactions.
google avatar

Hu Q.

Yelp
This is 2nd time they put in 3 (5)XA XIU when I ordered 3 number 2 instead. This XA XIU is Chinese BBQ pork, it is the worst in town. I suggest they stop making them, instead put in customeras order. Tell me if you like (5)XA XIU on the banh mi menu

Linh T.

Yelp
Super rude! The front lady is not happy if you ask questions. She literally threw my food on the counter and asked me to go get cash when I said wanted to pay with cards. There's not even a "cash only" sign in the store. Never come back and not recommend. Terrible place.
google avatar

Liz N.

Yelp
The cha lua (viet pork meat loaf) here is always hot and fresh. Pate is also creamy and delicious. Can't comment on anything else here but will try to work my way through their menu and update this review.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
So I went on a wild goose chase looking for this place to buy the best cha lua! Turns out this place is cash only and there is no ATM at all so have your cash ready. They have tons of different kinds of Cha and they do not make sandwiches at this location!! Sooo don't expect to come out with your sandwich. This is a place to buy ingredients to make your own. Will update after I actually try the cha!
google avatar

Eva L.

Yelp
Love this place but is a bit further of a drive for me. Good pate and cha lua , which is my go to when I come here, and sometimes will pick up some bread if it isnt sold out. Cash only!! Apparently they have banh cuon/sammiches and other foods but I didn't know that before but when I do go, they're usually sold out so go early!!! This is a super small spot so they have limited supplies on certain things. Limited english but not a deal breaker for me even if I don't speak viet. So many people say these people are mean but it's not a fancy place, it's a quick pick up and leave and it is run by older people- it's a cultural thing how they talk to people. I don't believe they are really being mean or malicious on purpose. they're just trying to do business. You can't expect every single place in the world to provide good customer service [i mean it is a nice bonus] - I almost want to call this a little hole in the wall. You get good food and das it. Anyways, when I am in the area, I def will swing by because the food is good. Makes a good quick lunch/breakfast. The small sammiches serve as good snacks - whoot. If this one is too far, they also have a milpitas branch , near great mall, in the pho kim long plaza.

Lang D.

Yelp
Cashiers are always standing and talking to each other, while ignoring their customers. I asked a question, and they looked at me quickly, and continued on their conversation. I had to say "hello??" multiple times to get their attention. If they don't want to sell to me, then I won't buy from them. Not coming back here again.
google avatar

Thu Huong V.

Yelp
I get this line to come in to buy something but the cashier call the girl ( name HANG) behind me to come first , I think the line will be first come first serve . I told the cashier that the girl came after me so she was ignoring and serving for the young girl . I am senior ! Today is Friday Mar/12 /2021 . I hope the manager of store should know and the store will be improve
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
Customer service is poor. The security guard (2/2/19 @3:00PM) kept touching my arm & others as well. Not professional. He was taking his job too seriously, telling people where to stand when everyone was simply waiting in the damn line. Their cha is good but at this rate we probably won't be coming back. DON'T F^CKING TOUCH YOUR DAMN CUSTOMERS, just because you're a security, it does not make it legal to touch others. You have no reason to! It's considered simple assault / battery! So keep your grody hands off your customers. You put my sister & I in a very uncomfortable situation. I'm sure everyone else who was touched by him felt uncomfortable as well. Someone fire him please. Thanks.

Karen L.

Yelp
Very very nasty attitude. They treat customers as if we're there for free food. Not only that their Cha lua now tasted way different than before. I decided to try a different cha lua place " cha lua Ngon" near by. It's way better people and of course better service.
google avatar

Faye L.

Yelp
I normally don't leave negative review but today I have too. The owner is completely rude and mean just because I parked my car in the parking lot in front of their back door. There is no sign saying the parking is reserved for loading or for their store only. She's also threatening will call the tow company to tow my car if I'm going to park there again next time. She's absolutely clueless about law! She thinks she can claim whatever parking she likes. I will never buy anything from this store again after today even though they might have good banh gio. Now I know why there are so many negative comments in Facebook group's.
google avatar

Vi Y.

Yelp
No idea why they have such bad reviews. They make the best tasting cha EVER. Their cha que (cinnamon cha) is so addicting! They always run out, and the service can be pretty horrible, but with food that good, I'll take it. I guess it goes to show that Yelp isn't always the best place to get tips on the best food in town. If I wasn't born and raised in San Jose and saw their reviews, I don't think I'd ever come here!

Kimmi N.

Yelp
This is a second times Happened to me . I don't really like to make a big deal or complainted I just wanted to let's them know how was the food And it's done liked the frist time ( is it ok or should I drive back to the store and yelled in their face ) . The food was very bad I knew they sell the old food that's why it tasted little sour Then I called them and tell them about that but the cashiered was really made me so mad ... seem like she always at a bad mood , unhappy. she raise her voices to me by the ways she talked and upsets . if the lady tell me something she supported to said .....and it's done but she thought it wasn't her faults liked come and she gave me back because it's my problem not her .. ( I didn't need that shit and it's wasting my times ) and whatever i wanted to talked ....????? ( disrespected) Never buy from this place again ...all the cashiers seem like they don't really needs coustumers and they talked like a boss not a worker or they gave it for free or what ....

HN N.

Yelp
I've never given a review but I wouldn't mind to write today and can write more reviews so others can be aware about customer service of this place. Food is as expected but I would not pay a dime here. I would go to Duc Huong elsewhere. I have never seen such a terrible service in Vietnamese community.

Yelp
*********************** REVIEW 440 ************************ DUC HUONG offers a good selection of CHA~ (Vietnamese ham/sausage), a popular snack/food from Northern Vietnam where people pride themselves as professional CHA~ LUA rollers/makers. My mom is from the North & she always buy it here. Traditionally, CHA~ LUA (literally means SILK HAM) is made of lean pork, potato starch, and fish sauce. There are also the variant types made out of beef instead. The pork pasty, Vietnamese fish sauce, salt, ground black pepper, and sugar, then wrapped tightly in banana leaves into a 7 inches high & 3 inches diameter shape and boiled. DUC HUONG offers these CHA that are well-known for, if you come in the early AM, when the CHA was freshly made, still smoking hot, it goes so well with Vietnamese Baguette (BANH MI). We used these CHA, slice them thinly over BANH CUON (rolled cake, it is a crepe-like roll made from a thin, wide sheet of rice flour filled with ground); over sticky rice dishes; over BUN (rice stick noodle soup dishes) & much more! - CHA LUA - traditional ham, so delicious, - CHA CHIEN - if fried, - CHA HUE - from Hue Central Vietnam style, to serve with BUN BO HUE (spicy Vietnamese noodle soup). - CHA BI - Ham with chewy pork skins - super delicious, but fattening! - CHA BO - beef version. Beside CHA, Duc Huong also offers other snacks such as CHA BONG (pork floss), Sweet sticky rices, BANH BAO (Pork Bun), NEM ( fermented pork sausage), and other Vietnamese popular snacks. The quality here is consistent over the years, good price, friendly service and authentic CHA food! My mom loves it here & this CHA here is as good as it gets as I had it when growing up in Saigon.
