Giolitti Review - Pantheon - Rome - The Infatuation

"Giolitti is a classic gelateria nearby the Pantheon that’s been around since 1900. It’s impossible to miss—the shop’s bright green signage practically takes over the block—and their variety of flavors nearly match the number of years they’ve been in business. If picking between tiramisu and Indian fig feels like an impossible task, follow our lead and go with the creamy pistachio paired with the boozy zabaione. And if it’s a two-treat kind of day, snag one of their cookies or pastries on the way out." - Annie Replogle

Annapolis has some great spots for sandwiches and if you’re not inclined to venture downtown to the historical Chick & Ruth’s to deal with the congestion, parking; Giolitti Delicatessen has a different vibe, and parking right outside easy Peezy. We’ve been there a couple of times over the years but just went twice over the past month and had great experiences. Yesterday, I had a fantastic sandwich called The Porchetta, the roasted pork was amazing and the seasoning was right on point, very good crusty bread. A week later I got another one and this one was perhaps even better! A few weeks ago they didn’t have this available and I went for the Muffaletta, again great bread and nice portions of meat with a spicy olive mix. Maybe not the same as from Central Market but good for Annapolis. The wife had a build your own tuna, it was ok but she wouldn’t be ordering it again. I think she has her eye on a Parma for her next order. The place does carry Route 11 Potato Chips, we got the BBQ and they were above average. For dessert, I got a Tiramisu, a Cannoli, but the wife sure won hands down when she picked the Tres leches cake! Wow, next week when we are back in that area I will certainly try to score two slices of that stuff for sure as it was delicious and way better than the other two. Now here is a funny thing, in this return trip a week later, I get two more slices: it might be my imagination, however, my wife confirmed it too; we both thought that one of the slices didn’t taste as good as the other. I don’t know if this is a matter of them having multiple bakers, and them not quite following the same recipe quite as enthusiastically or not but the first slice of cake just didn’t jazz us as much as the second one. The only serious service problem was when she got out to the car with the big bag of goodies, we discovered the 3 desserts were missing from the bag yet on our receipt. She had to go back to get them. Given how good they are, to have driven away & get home without dessert would have been heartbreaking so check your bags…at least on our return trip this 2nd week every thing was included. My only new disaster was upon getting home with some dinners packed in paper bags with handles. Walking from the car a big qt of red sauce dropped through the bottom of the paper bag; it had become saturated from condensation by sitting next to a frozen chicken piccata; CAREFULLY CARRY THE BAG FROM THE BOTTOM NEXT TIME! It’s quite pain in the butt cleaning up quart of reds sauce in the garage after you produce a Jackson Pollock ripoff🤪

I am still thinking about that porchetta sandwich. It was the best sandwich I have ever had. Perfectly seasoned, tender pork with crispy edges, all tucked into fresh bread that held everything together without falling apart. Every bite was unforgettable. If you are anywhere near Giolitti Delicatessen, treat yourself to the porchetta. You will understand why I am already craving it again.

Google
The porchetta sandwich was amazing! Jonathan and Henry gave incredible costumer service and my wife enjoyed her tuna sandwich! Wonderful business that we will be returning to for sure.

Google
Up scale casual, kid friendly, large portions beautiful outdoor patio eating, great small shop inside with delicacies. We got a Greek side salad, a side of potato salad and a kids spaghetti with marinara. Served with crispy soft bread perfect for soaking up the tomatoey marinara sauce Everything is so fresh and well prepared! We all left full and satisfied. And all this for under $20!

Google
We got four sandwiches total and they were all made to order with freshly cut meats which is super nice, very fancy meats on display, very nice Spanish and Italian specialties available by weight. They also have a lot of salads by weight and lots of wines from Italy and some from Spain, like lots! Also some dried goods from Italy and great looking ready meals. Will go back for those for sure. Our subs were very good, the porchetta was by far the best one, the one with most stuffing and flavor. Mine was the parma and sadly... it didn't have a lot of ham, you can see the pictures. The caprese was good, mostly thick mozzarella. Still recommend, it was a good sandwich.

Google
Oh my!!! Whenever we visit Annapolis, this is a must restaurant. Delicious food and plenty varieties of to go meals. We always get Chicken cacciatore 1/2 tray to take home. If I lived closer, I would be a weekly customer.

Google
Small Italian import deli. They roast make their own Porchetta and the house special sandwich had that, fontina, caramelized onion and antipasta style rapini. It was simple and amazing. Back of house is all hispanic so get some extra love if you order in Spanish. The pistachios ricotta cake was light but still nutty. The tiramisu had a great flavor, though not enough cake. One layer of cake toped with creme instead of multiple thin layers of both alternating. There is a service fee if you would like to open & have bottle service of a wine while there. I plan to try the cookies and premades next

Google
Giolitti’s as we knew it is dead. All new people. Food is a disaster. They can’t even get a salad right. The shelves are empty. The new layout creates a chokepoint. When you ask what happened to the previous staff (Donny and Noah) the current people look terrified. RIP Giolittis.

Yelp
Dinner for under $20! I ordered a bowl of lemon chicken orzo soup, a half Milano sandwich, and a drink (brewed iced tea with fresh lemon). The soup was hearty, flavorful, and the fresh carrots and celery showed that it was made in-house. The Milano sandwich was a work of art! The high-quality ingredients included bread, mozzarella, olives, prosciutto, and olive oil.

Yelp
Authenticity at its finest. A must go to if you have a desire for really good Italian basics found in good Italian deli

Yelp
Was heading back home from a day of fishing and desperately wanted a deli sandwich. I looked up the nearest delicatessen and this one did not disappoint. The Cuban panini and The Italian on a baguette hit the spot. Had to wait 15 min longer than was told to us when we ordered over the phone but it was worth the wait. It is very cute inside with various Italian delicacies.

Yelp
Came in to purchase a gift and all of a sudden, multiple employees have positioned themselves to watch me. So I started watching one back. You won't everrrrrrr have to worry about attempting to patronize this place again.

Yelp
Authentic Italian delis are not as common as they used to be, sadly. Which is a real shame. There's something irreplaceable about the nostalgia from walking into a brightly painted red-white-green façade, and taking in the unmistakable aromas, sights, and sounds. It's a thing of beauty! Fortunately, there are still gems to be found, if you know where to look. Giolitti's is one of those gems. I mainly come here for the deli sandwiches, but you should definitely check out their store as well! They have a ton of imported goods, many of which you cannot find in your local supermarket. Maybe you can find them online, but be ready to pay for expensive shipping and markups! They have a great wine selection as well, so you could outfit an entire picnic here, if you had a mind to. The deli is where it's at, though! This is why I keep coming back. It's hard to find this kind of sandwich selection anywhere else, especially with the Italian driven menu at its heart! They have unique and hard-to-find options, like the Muffuletta, which is a New Orleans staple. It's made very well here, and it's probably my favorite on the menu. Takes me back to Central Grocery in the French Quarter... The service here has always been very good, too. They are quick to answer any questions I've had, and if they didn't know the answer, they found someone who did. I've never had any bad experiences with the staff. They've been great to work with! This place only loses that final star for prices (I'm not sure that can be helped these days, though...) and for the awkward parking and road access situation. It can get a bit cramped in their tiny lot, especially if you park by the actual building! But, these are minor complaints, and they shouldn't stop you from checking out this cool place!

Yelp
Been eating here since I was a kid. One of the best Italian markets in Annapolis. No matter what you get it is always delicious. I love stopping in for a sandwich or soup. The other day I stopped by for lunch, my group got the Giolitti Vegetarian Sandwich, Eggplant Parm sub, and Cuban Panini. All three sandwiches where delicious and hit the spot. The Eggplant parm sub comes with some of the best marinara I've had besides the one my mother makes. There's seating inside and outside and the staff is very friendly. A great spot for shopping or grabbing some food.

Yelp
This is a very good Italian deli serving both hot food, deli style sandwiches and food and an Italian market inside. You can order traditional Italian sandwiches such as sausage sandwiches, chicken parmigiana, Italian cold cuts, soups and salads. They also do pizza, pastas, calzones and traditional Italian desserts such as tiramisu, cheesecake and cannolis. They even have frozen and refrigerated pre-made foods for take-home such as soups, pasta, deli meat and desserts. You can also purchase whole cakes here. On one occasion I purchased a whole carrot cake which was approximately $75 and it was delicious. I called approximately 2 days in advance and they had it ready for me at pickup. My only disappointing thing about the cake order is they don't have whole cake boxes that fully close. Essentially what they do is put the cake in a box and seal the open parts of the box with plastic wrap. This isn't necessarily a deal breaker however I was expecting more considering this was a whole cake order and their whole cakes are all virtually the same size. Overall a good experience. I'll return if in the area. Give them a try.

Yelp
II ordered a cold lasagna from Giolitti. My first issue was with the woman who answered the phone. She did not understand English very well and what should have been a 10 minute telephone order ended up being a 20 -25 minute telephone order. The order was ready on schedule which was good. However, this lasagna was for a dinner party. It was a meat lasagna and I have to tell you that it was terrible. I was embarrassed. It was dripping in cheese, hardly any meat, and it was so salty hardly anyone finished it. Not a 5 star deli as far as I'm concerned. Never again. So disappointed.
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
4 stars only because the sandwich bread is soft. Needs a firm crust. Tasty otherwise - subs just need a bread upgrade. So close!
google avatar

Mark J.

Yelp
The undefeated, reigning sandwich shop in Annapolis. And if it couldn't get any better, it is ran by the NICEST people. The staff couldn't be friendlier! I always leave happy and eager to come back. You gotta check Giolitti's out :)
google avatar

Kelly P.

Yelp
Amazing food - always stop here for delicious lunch when in Annapolis. Great Italian market. Service is quick and staff is super friendly. Nice premade section for Italian dishes. Highly recommend! It's small but we always find a seat or take to go is an option.
google avatar

Temima N.

Yelp
Cute little Italian deli / bakery we found nearby while running errands! There's some seating in the front as well as back that we found later on. The sandwich was alright, I had the eggplant one. It was filling though! I liked the canoli though. I haven't had one in awhile so it was nice to try one here!
google avatar

Julian B.

Yelp
Surprise find on a quick stop off to use the bathroom at WF. Amazing porchetta sandwich. On level w anything in Philly sandwich scene. Also a great cannoli, way better than anything I've had in Baltimore. Got lasagna to go and super excited about it .

L. H.

Yelp
Update based on the latest experiences. The food isn't as fresh and not as good as before. The tomato sauce is too sour from a can, and the taste has changed. Still a good place to visit if in a hurry.
google avatar

Gina S.

Yelp
Love stopping in for a quick lunch. They have amazing sandwiches like the Milano with prosciutto and fresh mozzarella
google avatar

Lloyd D.

Yelp
This is a nice little Italian market and sandwich shop. But your own pasta or have lunch or a wine tasting. A lot goes on here depending on when you come. I love the Italian because of the hard bread. It make the experience authentic. You can have linch band then shop for Italian favorites. Parmesan and other cheeses, wine, breads, cookies etc. Great place in Annapolis for a quick
google avatar

Kim P.

Yelp
I dream of Italian sandwiches from Giolitti's. The various breads, the toppings, the variety...I could eat here everyday! It's a good thing this place is 30 miles away otherwise I'd likely start looking like an Italian roll, all soft and puffy. The first time I got the Caprese and it was amazing. My second time I got the Vegetarian and wow. The Focaccia was amazing, the marinated eggplant was delicious and the mozzarella, so fresh. The whole sandwich was huge! My husband got the porchetta and we split half way through and I loved the light spice of the porchetta. So amazing. The sandwiches are literal works of art! Parking is tight but the deli is really cute. There's some seating inside and some outside. You order at the sandwich counter and they'll either bring your sandwiches to your table or hand you your bag. There's also a selection of wine, Italian groceries, frozen items and desserts.

Jason B.

Yelp
I do recommend. Nice place. However, sandwiches could use a little work. Muffuletta was pretty small and lacked everything. I will go back but please understand there are plenty of options especially with Baltimore and DC so close and a short ride up 95 is the holy grail of hoagies and subs; Philadelphia JB Washington DC

Yelp
This place has a good wine selection and Italian groceries not available elsewhere. Deli selections very Mediterranean. One of this one of that. Excellent bread you can take home and bake. Delicious taramasu. Barb, Annapolis

Yelp
A rare find. A mixture of restaurant and hard to find Italian deli, dry goods, and wine, Giolitti's is the real thing. I've been there twenty times; never left without spending a couple hundred on all of the above. Oh, their lemon cookies and carrot cake are not to be missed! Their refrigerated items, like chicken piccata are excellent, but not meant for freezing. Eat them soon. Bottles of wine that cost $30 anywhere else cost $20 there. The esoteric items available are plentiful, whether it's high quality jarred tuna or Calabrian chili sauce. The bread is as good as you'll find outside of Italy. I go for dinner (usually the chicken piccata with lemon potatoes and a house salad; which can be eaten in the grocery area, a non-descript dining room, or outside), then load up on the delicacies. After all, that's why they call it a deli, right? If you're in the Annapolis area, make Giolitti's a priority.
google avatar

Hasan A.

Yelp
Great meatball subs, eggplant parmesan panini style sandwich. Need to try more. Great staff, they're all super nice!

Terry B.

Yelp
Excellent sandwiches. Excellent choice of bottles of wine for purchase. Since this is primarily an Italian deli, hot pasta dishes are available for takeout or to enjoy on site. In most cases Deli stands for Delicatessen. With Giolitti's Deli stands for Delicious!
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
A favorite for those in the know Nap town residents. Giolittis Mediterranean eat in dining, carry out Italian delicatessen homemade fresh desserts, and hard crust breads, and baguette's. I like the amount of top name and featured boutique wines in stock not just Italian.
google avatar

Barbara J.

Yelp
This is a true Italian deli, the salads, the fresh meat and cheeses, olives and oils. Oh yes, the pasta and desserts!! All the store is WONDERFUL, I was in a good place in my feelings :) When I visit the shore again this is a regular stop. Oh yes did I mention the desserts, and customer service was great also.

J C.

Yelp
This was our first time visiting here. We ordered an Italian sub and it was mostly bread. It tasted ok with the dressing. However, I think you could go to subway and get a better sub. Staff was hit or missed we ordered at the counter. The interior of the place needs some updating.
google avatar

Nathan A.

Yelp
Rating the Italian sub a generous 3, mainly because I'm hungry. Went at the recommendation of a local who said the Italian was one of the best subs they had. Well..... if you like bread, this is the sub for you. Two bites and my jaw is already getting tired. In order to get meat throughout the sandwich I had to do a little deconstruction. I then realized that there wasn't much meat all. I might try a different sub the next time, but I'll look out for one without the Italian roll.
google avatar

Fred P.

Yelp
I enjoy picking up subs from Giolitti's. My wife and I love the Tonno Italians and my son likes a custom made ham and cheese on Tuscan bread. I also enjoy their cannoli's for dessert. They have a nice little selection of very good Italian deli and grocery items. I pick up pepperoni and sopressata sticks as well as cheeses and some unique pasta and canned items. Their wine offerings are quite nice too. You have to be patient with the subs as each one is made to order, but with that considered, their service is prompt and friendly.

Elsa M.

Yelp
Great Italian Deli and foods. Authentic. Great lasagna and sandwiches. Breads and cheeses are great for entertaining.
google avatar

Joan L.

Yelp
We were looking for quick bite for lunch and Yelp was spot on once again. Giolitti's is the real deal, an authentic Italian deli with an array of meats, cheeses, sandwiches, and pastas to take out or eat in at one of the several tables. Husband ordered a roast beef sandwich on focaccia and I ordered an eggplant parm hero. Both were delicious! The eggplant was the best eggplant I have ever had. It was sliced thin with a whisper of a coating. The eggplant was piled high on the delicious bread, which I could have eaten on its own. The Deli also sells some dry goods, frozen foods, and baked goods. We were glad we found Giolitti's. When we got there we actually met some friends who had lived in Annapolis who said that Yelp had definitely steered us to the right place!
google avatar

Christopher H.

Yelp
Nice ambiance and good service. Easy access and ordering. Shrimp salad wrap was subpar.
google avatar

Wayne G.

Yelp
I'm in the area and noticed Jannet C. and Lia H. reviewed it. Though I've never met them their reviews are familiar so here I am. We seem to follow each other across the NCR. This place is kinda cool inside. You can sit in the quiet market area or an adjoining dining area. They have private parking across from a modern shopping area; Whole Foods, etc. The Roman sandwich is quite good. The coffee is fine but they don't offer free refills which is a bummer. The service is good.
google avatar

Chuck C.

Yelp
Our friends love it when we bring one of the Antipasto trays to a party. I also enjoy the sandwiches- can't go wrong!
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
Food was spectacular! Ambiance was quirky, but lovely. Staff was attentive. We'll be back!
google avatar

Paige C.

Yelp
Amazing selection of gourmet Italian food, and you can't beat their sandwiches. They serve generous portions and the staff could not be nicer. Great selection of wines too.

Carolyn R.

Yelp
My last 6 or more visits have been very disappointing! Historically, the best in town, great sandwiches, salads, and specialty items/sides, but not for the last year. Todays "special salad" was, $17, included a generous portion grilled chicken breast, romaine lettuce-no spring green, a spec of red onion, a few grape tomatoes, avacado, chopped bacon from the fridge (not heated/warmed) so the fat had congealed, cucumbers that appeared to have been frozen were translucent and jelled, and no cheese, with a drink for $20 vs. a great salad at J. Alexander for $18.
google avatar

Elaine F.

Yelp
We have lived in "Naptown" for a year and a half but had never tried this place. We went in this afternoon to pick up carry out Italian subs for the Superbowl. It is a warm, cozy space, with tables for seating and Wine racks or refrigerator cases around the edges. We ordered an Italian sub and a Roman sub (the Roman has Parma ham). The subs are made on crunchy baguettes instead of Italian rolls. There is time while you wait to check out the nice variety of wines, plus the ready to carry out pasta and entree items, all of which looked extremely tempting. We will definitely return to try some of their other options.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place 01-09-2023 because I was coming out of Whole Foods but went out the wrong way!! lol. I saw it said Italian market !! & it's a place I don't see anywhere in the dmv area so I crossed the street and sure enough they had an Authentic Italian Sub and breads!! . My mama loves Italian subs but the places she's been they don't put everything that's supposed to be on it nor enough to make a filling sandwich smh. This place didn't disappoint!!! I got the sandwich to go!! so the oils etc wasn't put on there. which was great because the bread would've been soggy cuz there definitely was traffic on the way home!!.. The customer service was niice everywhere I stood someone greeted me immediately, the store was wall to wall Olive oils of all kinds , homemade pastas & sauces and olives every Italian ingredient filled the display cases, And wines were everywhere!!... Onto the Sandwich the sandwich came on the softest bread!! The meats were enough for the size it covered every end and beginning of the bread and stacked nicely, the flavors were of a REAL Italian sub in every way down to the hot peppers!!. The sandwich was Filling, very flavorful, I definitely caught the itis off just a half a sandwich! and chips . I'd MOST DEFINITELY CERTAINLY Return!! & they had the HUGEST piece of carrot cake I've seen for one serving! The African American guy that works at Bassett furniture even said how great the subs are and it's been around for decades!!
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Good food, good service. Have eaten in and also carry out. Everything I have tried has been excellent

Julie C.

Yelp
They have my favorite Italian cookies like I've gotten from little Italy in NYC. Their cannoli's are the best too.

Virginia M.

Yelp
I love their sandwiches! Been going there for years & I haven't been disappointed once. They have a great staff , pleasant & clean restaurant.
google avatar

Scott D.

Yelp
Delicious Italian treats, meats, desserts and the like await your taste buds at this wonderful delicatessen. I always leave here with some kind of special treat to take home with me . Love this place!!!

Debra E.

Yelp
Great food, great service! I highly recommend for catering events! I had a great experience with an event they helped cater.
google avatar

Samantha M.

Yelp
I was impressed with the selection of cheese, meats, pastas, and treats. We didn't order espresso because the menu wasn't clear. Staff were friendly. The parking lot was a bit small and super full on a Friday afternoon. There is a parking garage just across the street by whole foods. We bought some focaccia to go with dinner and it was amazing.

Yelp
Really wanted to like this place, but the preparations let me down. I've been hankering after lasagna and porchetta for a while since they're both fairly labor-intensive items to make own my own. The meat lasagna by itself was pretty decent, with a good balance of meat/sauce/ricotta (not too much of the latter). It was served de-towered, splayed out in a bowl, which ruined the shot I was hoping to take. I understand why that was necessary though, because there included a decent helping of their marinara sauce. But that was what dragged it down: it was much too salty and often overwhelmed the lasagna itself. As for the porchetta sandwich, I was really looking forward to it because the stewed/slightly-bitter rapini should be a great counterpart to the herb roasted pork. But the pork itself was very dry, and that took away from an otherwise excellently constructed sandwich. Wasting that perfectly good and crusty Italian roll was a shame. Service was very good, no complaints there. I know Giolitti's facilities/manpower means that they may have to prepare food ahead of time. But the marinara sauce was disappointing, and there must be a better way to keeping the pork juicy-ish longer.
google avatar

Margaret W.

Yelp
Love the choices here. My husband is crazy about the Roman sandwich. I love their lasagna. The wine and varied selection of food for snacks and cooking are great. One of the best is the special Italian balsamic vinegar at the cost of $50 fora small bottle of exquisite quality. You only need a tiny bit to flavor your salad or dish. We are regular customers here.
google avatar

Bill P.

Yelp
This is a real gem in the Annapolis area. We just used them again to cater a special dinner for friends from Annapolis, New Jersey, and Florida. The food was over-the-top delicious and helped break the ice as our friends met each other for the first time. Everything from the two types of lasagna to the mini calzones to the garlic bread was a big hit and helped accompany the telling of great stories and laughter. I keep their pasta sauce in the freezer for when it is time for a pasta dish, it is so tasty and so much better than anything else. Fully recommend them for everything from a casual Italian sandwich for lunch to a more sophisticated party.
google avatar

Sydni L.

Yelp
Everything is so fresh! I have not chosen some thing I do not like yet on the menu. This place is so adorable inside, it gives the vibe of an Italian market. You can also sit and eat in there. Their menu is broad, but not overwhelming. Personally, I love crafting turkey sandwiches. Their cheesesteak is probably the best one I've ever had. You do have to call in to order, but that just gives an old-fashioned vibe. The staff is really nice and are eager to serve their amazing food!
google avatar

Rob B.

Yelp
I wish I would think of this place more often, but despite being in plain view I miss it, forget. I am always happy with the goods and the take away fresh and frozen is nice. Not everything in the dozen area reheats as stated on the package FYI
google avatar

Jannet C.

Yelp
This is a wonderful place to go for a great variety of Italian specialities. I had a build your own sandwich with prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, olive oil and balsamic vinegar on fresh baked focaccia bread. It was an amazing sandwich! There are so many choices there, like their housemade porchetta sandwich, cold cuts, meatballs, pasta dishes, salads and desserts. This place is also an Italian speciality market, where you can buy deli meats, family sized prepared dinners, a huge variety of fresh pastas and ravioli, and they also have a great selection of wines. Such a cute restaurant and market, and friendly service.
