La Jolla’s Best Restaurants and Bars | Eater San Diego

"Beloved by La Jolla locals, the European-style cafe has been a favorite stop for casual lunches, picnic provisions, and take-home quiches for over three decades. Utilizing produce grown in its own organic garden in Julian, its menu includes pastries baked in-house as well as cookies, seasonal soups, and sandwiches built on fresh loaves of homemade bread. Expect casual counter-order service and homey wooden tables." - Helen I. Hwang

Not a fancy spot, but a really solid choice when you’re hungry. The food is good quality with a nice variety to choose from—perfect for a quick bite or snack. I asked for a chai tea latte, and they made it especially for me, which was such a nice touch. The apple strudel was also really good—fresh and flavorful. It’s a casual, comfortable place that delivers exactly what you need when you’re craving something tasty and satisfying.

We were just walking by looking for a coffee, and we end up in this amazing place! First of all, I want to recall the five star attention from all the staff including the owners, and adorable couple! We ordered a quiche, blue berry muffin, capuccino and a latte, everything was good. This place is very pet friendly, they offered our pup a piece of ham and water, we are very grateful for that as we just came back from the beach. This will be our new fav spot in La Jolla!

Wow!!! Our Girard sandwich was delicious and huge. Thank goodness we shared one. It was toasted with turkey, bacon and veggies in it. I really enjoyed it as well as the cowboy cookie. Everything looked good. I will probably go back tomorrow and get one of the pies. Limited Seating inside and out.

Love this place more than ten years ago before leaving SD. Came to SD this year and was happy that this place remains in good quality.

Google
if you come here i hope you don’t get the red head male with metal glasses! really rude! i asked if i could have my sandwich all the way literally using their own terms that they use here (btw i come here all the time) and he replied back with an attitude “ohhh so you don’t want me bother you by asking a million of questions ” um excuse me i just asked for all the way as mayo, mustard, micro greens, pepperoncini’s, red onions, literally alllll the wayyyy… and then to my disappointment he made the most basic sandwich when i paid $14 for this

This lady helps immigrants she even fo cookies and they are dedicated to immigrants is beautiful atmosphere, something different from what we are going thru with this administration, she is democrat and always busy she is located in la Jolla try it is great. Her sandwiches are incredible.

Google
They were out of the special and several menue items. The small shrimp creole had 3 tiny shrimp in shells, unidentifiable mix of tomatoes and onions and a few pieces of diced green peppers. The main ingredient⁹ was salt with a cornbread toping. Not recommended! The sweets are delicous!

Have been eyeing this place for a while when passing by, I decided to finally give it a shot and was not disappointed. I got the Girard Special, and this sandwhich definitely hit the spot! Very warm and welcoming place and for sure a hidden gem that I will recommend to my peers.

Yelp
Cute quaint mom and pop shop next to a bunch of Pilates studios in La Jolla! Stopped by after a Pilates class bc I wanted to treat myself and eat at the beach. They seem to have a lot of regulars as when I was waiting to order, they were chatting with a regular customer and they were so kind to her. I got the chicken curry sandwich and it was sweeter than I expected! I was expecting a savory sandwich. I don't think I'd get it again bc it didn't match my expectations but I'd still come back and try their other food items as they have an extensive menu! The owner? was so kind and gave me two free pastries bc I was waiting a little longer than expected (not that long but I appreciate the kind gesture). I will definitely be back to give another item a try due to the lovely customer service!

Yelp
Wasn't impressed by their desserts - the cowboy cookie was pretty mediocre (too crunchy/hard for me), and my boyfriend tried an almond square that wasn't great either. Maybe we misordered - they seemed super popular and there were a lot of other things that looked interesting (quiches, sandwiches, tarts).

Yelp
Omg I'm in such love of the vegetarian sandwich!!! Nick made this masterpiece today for me & 3 friends! Diane the owner is always so nice & pleasant! Thanks again

Yelp
Cute bakery in La jolla with friendly service! I was so amazed by the fruit tart. It's the first fruit tart I've had that isn't overly sweet and it actually feels refreshing! Would go again to try the other pastries.

Yelp
Great spot for the Bakery and Cafe here at Girard Gourmet. There was a line when we got here but it moved pretty quickly, they have many staff to take your orders. So many to choose from. I got the Chicken Curry Baguette, it has some cranberry that gave a hint of sweetness to it and it was actually good. As for the rest of the food, I let my wife choose them, she was overwhelmed by the selections that they have from Bakery items or Hot meals. This is also a good spot to stop by for a quick grab on your break from work to grab your Lunch to go or boxes of goodies to bring for friends and family.

Yelp
Omg just the cutest little bakery I've ever seen!! My mom and I decided to stroll down San Diego, and as we were walking by we saw such a sweet display of all their cookies, tarts, and other pastries. After we stopped in, we thought maybe we should just skip the treat and continue walking. As we were about to leave a nice older woman over the counter asked if we'd had been here before; we told her no, to which she responded "Come back and have lunch here sometime!" I loved that. She must be personable to a lot of her guests, because she knew most of them by name. She greeted and conversed with her regulars, and I thought that was so sweet. We ended up changing our minds, and opted to try a Fruit Tart, because it just looked so good. And unsurprisingly it was delicious as well! The fruit help up so well over a few days and the tart was nice and tasty. Can't wait to come back and try more!!

Yelp
My husband and I were craving for pastries and ended up at this place with pretty much everything on it inside. They have things like Pastries, Hot meals, Sandwiches, Salads, and more. I was very excited to try this place when I saw that there were so many selections. We ordered the following: *MIXED FRUIT TART *COOKIE *CHICKEN CURRY BAGUETTE *CROISSANT *SALMON & GOAT CHEESE * BAKE CHICKEN & PENNE Among our orders, the first one I enjoyed eating was the CHICKEN CURRY BAGUETTE. I was expecting it to be more on the Savory side, but it's much better than I was expecting. It's both Savory and Sweet, so it surprised me to have a Chicken Curry that was more sweet than Savory. But I did like it, I enjoyed the taste of it. The second good that I enjoyed was the Cute COOKIE, it's a good buttery sugar cookie, I will get more cookies here the next time I visit. Then the Third one that I enjoyed to eat was the SALMON & GOAT CHEESE, there were lots of tidbits of Salmon, this was savory and so good. The Croissant was also good. And then my Fourth one that I enjoyed was the MIXED FRUIT TART, it wasnt too Overly sweet, but I am Glad that I stayed on their outdoor Table to eat instead of waiting to go home to eat 'coz I noticed that I was CHARGED $35 for a Fruit Tart that was only less than $10. But they were quick to fix that mistake and refunded me. Regarding the Baked Chicken, I was already too full when I got to it, so I couldn't try it much. I just took it home and forgot about it, but it was probably good too. There was a never ending stream of customers coming in and out of this place, they have indoor tables, but we chose the outdoor seating 'coz the room where the tables were looked so outdated. There were Plenty of Staff and they moved quickly around to assist the customers. Parking is on the Side of the street, we didnt have a problem to find a parking.

Yelp
We came here for lunch on a Saturday and each got a salad. I got their chicken salad which was okay. Very average. I would have loved to try a pastry but they didn't have gluten free options but seeing how flies were landing on the baked goods and the staff doing nothing about it took that craving away. I think this place is popular because of the location only. It is a nice casual place where you order at the counter and can sit either inside where the tables are in a dark area in the back of the cafe or outside. We sat outside. Parking in this area can be quite challenging depending on when you come. We parked down in La Jolla Cove to take a walk and it is a nice walk up to the cafe after walking the cove.

Yelp
Picked up a couple of items before my hair appointment upstairs and both were deeeelicious. Tried the almond square and raspberry rugelach. There was kind of a long line but that's usually a good thing, and the staff members all help each customer quickly and efficiently to get everyone in and out quickly.

Yelp
My FAVORITE place to eat in La Jolla. We always take friends and family here when they're visiting because it's such a fun experience. Their menu is HUGE and offers so much. You can order a whole cake, pie, or just enjoy a deli sandwich made with whatever you like. There is a lot of variety! We ordered the chile relleno pot pie (amazing), stuffed eggplant, and a ham and cheese croissant. They will warm up anything for you if you ask. Most things are actually made in-house and apparently their produce and veggies are all grown from their own farm! I enjoy how unique Girard's is, and will continue to be a patron here. As for the indoor seating, it can be difficult to find tables for larger groups and there is an okay amount of seating outside. You will have to compromise and sit on separate tables or if you're lucky, snag a table out front. Otherwise, Girard's deserves 5-stars.

Yelp
They have really great bakery items and quiches! Coffee was not great, but would come back for other items.

Yelp
I work very near here on the corner of Fay & Silverado, and it makes it very easy to walk to grab a bite here. I believe morning hours are VERY busy because this spot offers breakfast sandwiches and pastries, (lunch also) but I feel breakfast in the morning hours takes precedence. I have tried many items since working nearby for the last 3 years. I have tried 3 sandwiches - BLT, Italian, and Girard Gourmet, all on Italian bread. The half sandwich is MORE than plenty, a whole sandwich can be split into two days! My favorite so far as been the BLT, I always request lemon pepper on my sandwiches now after one of the workers asked if I wanted to try it on my BLT. I always ask them to toast it because it makes that much better, and they'll put tomato/lettuce/sprouts on after it's toasted cause they're kind like that. You can eat inside or outside but IS a bit cramped and it's a good place so it's busy and loud. They have hot food too... I have gotten spaghetti from there but tbh they just microwave it so you may as well just microwave it at your office but I understand that they big batch cook. The best soup I have had so far from here is their cream of mushroom, they don't skimp on the mushroom and it's delicious... I wasn't as impressed with the potato leek soup but that was my fault cause I thought it was supposed to be creamy. I like their sandwiches the best, they're a bit pricey but you're in La Jolla, and if you're with someone you can share and at that point the price is reasonable!

Yelp
For every negative review I have decided to leave a positive. First of all I've been eating the veggie sandwich since the 90s. When I managed Red boutique they delivered in the 90s. I am not sure if they deliver but my daughter and I go often and Girard gourmet is always our go to. The eggplant in the sandwich I used to order is often sold out and it's so popular the bread has sold out but there are SO MANY great options that it doesn't matter. If something I want isn't there usually I'll get a cookie that I don't ask for. I don't know if we are regulars or not, and remembered but we are always treated well. We love to eat outside on the patio. We go off times and can always find a spot. We always take a picture of the cookie window. We always like the food and the friendly service is always there even when busy. It's so nice to love a place in the 90s and love it still. Thank you!! Xo see ya soon Ps I always add the baked goods. Usually I'll ask.. what should I get today ... but I've never had an issue.

Yelp
Nice little nook of a cafe/bakery with many savory and sweet options. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Got the cowboy quiche which was delicious. I liked that the puff pastry was flaky and soft, not at all too crunchy or hard to consume. 4/5 Lemon walnut cake was okay. Wouldn't get again. 3/5 Cleanliness level was alright 3/5

Yelp
The service is great, the lady who served us food was very nice and welcoming. It is a quiet place at 7am, we got a table on the back and enjoyed our morning coffee in a quiet and nice atmosphere. The food was good I would come back again.

Yelp
Been coming here for years and love the food, location and staff. It's one of those places that can be considered a local treasure.
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
The baked goods looked so good in the window. I bought a sugar cookie which I had been craving. I was so disappointment! It was stale and not even close to fresh. The frosting was flavorless and like plastic. Based on other reviews, it seems this is a common problem. The treats look great in the window, but how long have they been there?

Yelp
Just had to say again how much I love Girard's. They have a new English man working there and he's wonderful (looks like an older Prince Harry). We grabbed our Turkey Avocado sandwiches, pickles, chips and drinks and headed to the La Jolla Cliffs. Note: But be sure to hold on tight to your sandwiches as the seagulls will try to nab them in the summer months. They tried but we know their schemes. Ha! Highly recommended! Enjoy!

Christine A.

Yelp
Not to be missed local favorite with delicious food and pastries. I worked in the village and when working late I'd make sure that I made a food run before they closed for the night. On a Sunday walkers stop for a coffee and dessert and sit in the sun. Limited indoor and outdoor seating. Lots of takeout!
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little cafe and bakery on the busy street of Girard. They have an extensive menu of soups, salad, stew, and pastries. The staff recommended the pear salad which came out so fresh and delicious. 10/10 recommendation. The blueberry muffin was warm and had the perfect chew to it. Great place to get small eats after walking around the area. 90 minutes parking along the street was a bit tough to get a spot so it really depends on your luck.

Yelp
Bakery in La Jolla Village popular with locals. Some pastries were okay, like the apple croissant was okay and the strawberry tart was very good. The sugar cookie was pretty bad and even my kid would not eat it, it was overbaked bitter and crusty but they just covered it up with icing which tasted weird due to using too much cheap food coloring, it was overpriced for $5 for a thin burnt cookie. They had deli selections like pasta salads and other savory food they heat up for you. Even though I was there before other people, they made me get in line twice and I had to wait while they helped a bunch of people who got there after me. The place was also really dirty inside with garbage everywhere and it looked like it hadn't even been swept thoroughly for a while. Also the flies flying around and sitting on the food was not appetizing.
google avatar

Thao L.

Yelp
One of our favorite lunch spots. Love their pear and strawberry cambozola salad and their sandwiches. Their linzer cookies are amazing. Also recommend their chicken pot pie and Chile relleno pie. Recently ordered a couple of party platters and was blown away.

Virginis M.

Yelp
Only went once, so perhaps my experience is not representative. I ordered a spinach salad. There was no spinach, only arugula. The mandarins seemed wet and soggy as if it came out of a can or perhaps were prepped the day before and stored in fluid. I thought the salad size was small and wondered if they had mistakenly given me someone's side salad.. There was no way to check. The line was long and the person that delivered it was never seen again. Definitely would not recommend the spinach salad. I picked out the soggy fruit and ate the small amount of arugula and onion. I left disappointed and still hungry. My husband's sandwich was acceptable.

Yelp
Did a search on Apple Maps to find a cafe, I stumbled upon this adorable mom n' pop type bakery after exploring the Museum of Contemporary Art. Actually thought we were at another cafe which turned out to be around the corner. What a happy mistake! By the look of the line in front you could tell it's popular among the locals. It wasn't long of a wait as it's more of a deli where you get to see most of their offerings and look at the menu then order from one of the friendly staff behind the counter. They were good at getting to each person as quickly as possible. So many things were tempting both me and my friend. There are several types of cookies, quiches, croissant, salads and fresh out the oven pot pies! Many had unique ingredients. I settled on the cup of soup + 1/2 sandwich. It sounded warm and comforting + a good deal since although it was sunny, it was a chillier San Diego January day. I'll have to come back for their curried chicken salad with almonds, beet, and papaya! I ordered the lamb and barley soup, Girard Gourmet special, and a chocolate chip cookie. We sat outside at one of their cute little tables. I enjoyed my soup, lamb is my favorite meat, and the 1/2 sandwich was huge! I opted for an Italian loaf bread which was perfect crispy on the outside and pillowy on the inside. The sandwich came warm with thick sliced turkey, thiccc bacon, peperoncini, avocado, roasted red pepper, with all the fixin's. It was quite hearty and delicious! I also liked the chocolate chip cookie which was thin and crispy on the outside but maintained a caramel-like chewiness. I think they used cinnamon as well? Wish I had ordered the cowboy cookie cause the person after me ordered that, I hadn't noticed they offered those, but I didn't wanna bother switching since I had already paid and it was busy. You don't find those often and I love them! Ah well it's just ANOTHER excuse to come back!!
google avatar

Roberta S.

Yelp
I have been a customer of this venue for many years. Their food is very good. What I recently found was they're politicizing. I'm not interested in being told how to vote in my local eatery. The owners and the folks who work for them are entitled to their opinion but where I spend my money to eat is to relax and not find cookies telling me how they feel about politicians. Shame on them. Don't we hear enough about politics that I don't need it when I'm eating.
google avatar

Nancy D.

Yelp
Food is ok but a long inefficient line to stand in to pick up an already ordered meal is ridiculous. A long line is always the case to stand in even if you wish a simple roll or drink. Pity too darn much trouble

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
The breakfast sandwiches are outstanding at this longtime La Jolla bakery and cafe! I love the novel way they "Scramble" the eggs using a styrofoam cup and the streamer nozzle from the espresso machine. This makes the eggs very light and fluffy and it's the first time I've seen it done. Very ingenious! Every pastry and cookie we tried was delicious and their ham and cheese croissant is among the best I ever had. Strongly recommend this local favorite. Pricing is extremely reasonable, especially for La Jolla. Everything is prepared with loving care when you order it, so be patient and you will be rewarded!
google avatar

Vanessa V.

Yelp
Bakery items super fresh the food smelled delicious next time I'll try had already ate
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
I think the food is actually pretty good! However, I cannot recommend this place because they have some unfriendly staff. I went there to buy a dozen muffins. As I was ordering and listing off all the flavors I want, I was told that I was taking too long with my order and holding up the line. I left very disappointed.
google avatar

Donald C.

Yelp
The service here is good. The food here (at least the sandwiches and croissants which we had were good), but the flies. I never see anyone talking about them, but on a recent visit, we had to leave. There was not one instance in which we passed this place and there weren't at least three flies landing on food and flying around inside. Considering how long the line usually is, prepare to watch these flies and rationalize what you're about to eat. The current system is just not working.
google avatar

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
Hadn't been here in quite a while but decided to revisit while my parents were in town! Wow I had never had anything here besides the sweets but their food is amazing and affordable! My mom and I shared the chicken pot pie and it was amazing!! It was so good we waited in a long line to snag one-I was fortunate enough to get the last one!! My dad's salmon and veggies was so fresh and seasoned well. The cookies are still as adorable as before and the icing makes it perfectly sugary.
google avatar

Erik T.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday morning and the food is amazing. The lamb stew is so flavorful and the portions are big. The green beans are super good with the caramelized onions. The Shepard pie was very tasty and the mash potatoes were seasoned well. The service is great and the owner is very friendly and approachable.
google avatar

Gabriel L.

Yelp
The cookies are 5/5 stars. The employees close the store 30minutes before the actual 6pm closing time and give cut throat symbol and head shakes to knocking women and children before the store closing time??? What kind of atmosphere do these employees think they are contributing to?
google avatar

Yelp
I think everyone knows this place is a gem, but this review here today is not a general review about the establishment but about one specific salad dressing that I can no longer live without. Over this weekend we were contemplating lunch and decided on Girard Gourmet as we often do. We decided we needed one of the many amazing meals pre-made salads. We get our selections, get to the checkout and the helpful gal tells us, "try the tarragon dressing, it's amazing." My husband was skeptical so they let us have one regular balsamic and one tarragon. We got home and my husband tasted the dressing and said, "this is not for me but you will love this." I tried it later in the afternoon and oh. my. goodness I love love love the dressing! I decided I must have a batch of this dressing and my wonderful husband got a big batch for me to have. I feel like this must be seasonal since I've never heard of it before, but I hope it never ever ever goes away.

Yelp
This is a 5-star gourmet. Stunned by how magnificent the baked goods and fresh meals were. It was HEAVEN. If you are Western European, you'll love Girard's. If you are Southern European, you'll love Girard's. If you are Middle Eastern, you'll love Girard's. If you are Asian, Latin, African, you'll love Girard's. Offering home-cooked entrees, they are sure to delight anyone who appreciates wholesome meals. I am someone who so appreciates rice and stew, together and mixed, and I spotted 3 or 4 options reminiscent of Middle Eastern stews (lamb and green beans; ratatouille; etc.) with 3 options of rice or bulgar. There are platters upon platters of a vast variety of baked goods: sweet, savory, hearty, light, simple, complex, you name it. Rice and lamb stew: 5+ Rice and ratatouille: 5+ Chicken pot pie- 5+ Apple fritter- 5+ Croissants- 5+ Interiors are homey with small tables throughout while the patio is bustling with people enjoying a quick bite and people-watching. I have dined in a couple of times, and each time they were slammed. So busy and yet so patient, calm, and welcoming. What a beautiful couple Diana and Francois are; thank you both for your hospitality and your dedication to good eats. HIGHLY recommend! I would be a regular if I lived in La Jolla; until then, monthly visits shall do.
google avatar

Jackie B.

Yelp
True facts: This place has been in the same spot for 35 years, with owners Francois and Diana putting on their aprons and showing up to work here every single day. Where else will you find that? Everything here is delicious. There is nowhere else like it. I worked here one summer in the 1990s. I'm happy it is still here. Secret tip: order the veggie sandwich (add meat if you like), it is very unique. Hope you show up on a "La Jolla" cookie day because that is true San Diego for those of us who remember gazing at those window cookies for decades.

Yelp
Crazy good! I LOVED my curry chicken/beet/papaya salad. It was SO perfect for the beach!! Filling but not over-the-top. I should've bought an extra one for later! Apple pie was DELICIOUS too! I tried my best to not devour the whole thing. #fail. There wasn't a crumb left. My friend ordered regular chicken salad, and even though I don't like mayo, it was really good! Peppery. She also got a roast beef sandwich that could've fed a family it was so huge. Definitely the best value! Prices are reasonable. Service is great. Absolutely perfect for a beach picnic! I'll be back!!!

Yelp
Love this place! The folks that work there are always happy to help when you walk through the door. I got a turkey sandwich on their famous fresh baked Italian bread, so soft and yummy! They use quality ingredients and you can taste difference! We tried one of their pastries which was fresh and tasty! Chill place and good vibes.

Jacob K.

Yelp
Very kind staff, has a very home feel. All the food is super good, and it tastes just like my grandmas recipes! If you are in the area I highly recommend.

Rob H.

Yelp
Normally I would not feel compelled to write a negative review; however, after standing in line to make an order, I noticed their house made cookies. One was an "I love Joe Biden" blue and white cookie. Totally fine. Behind it was a Donald Trump cookie that was the shape of a baby with the words "Guilty" across the diaper. Usually businesses will stay neutral regarding politics, but since you decided to alienate a specific group who believe different than you, I will not support your business and will make sure other "Republicans" know not to support you either. That is what makes America great, you choose to make your business political and I choose not to give you my money.

Yelp
this sandwich was pretty fire, only downside was that the bread was a bit tough to chew. service was great despite the line out the door and they handled the botox filled rude people so well. mad respect to the employees. also the english man gave us an extra apple strudle wich was so nice.

Dominic P.

Yelp
Amazing food, super warm and friendly staff, and family owned and operated small business you love to support. A couple has owned and operated this business for over 30 years and hand make everything from scratch... cookies, pies, croissants... even the loafs of bread they make their sandwiches on. First class spot and my favorite spot in La Jolla by far. A must for locals and travelers alike.
google avatar

Chelsea O.

Yelp
My husband is saying this is the best sandwich he's ever had. First of all, it was HUGE. I had a couple bites and it was fresh. Just look at the pictures, they say it all. Adorable little hole in the wall spot that is perfect for lunch or just a sweet snack + coffee.

Yelp
Great cookies, quiche and salad. Friendly service and indoor and outdoor seating. Nice atmosphere.

Yelp
Stopped by this place in La Jolla for lunch recently. We ordered sandwiches, salads and dessert and all of it was delicious and very fresh. The service was also excellent and very friendly. Location is perfect. There are amazing shops nearby. Will definitely come back!

Yelp
Been coming here for a few years now and food has always been consistent. There is usually a line out the door as it is a small deli type counter. There are tables in the back and a few out front. Parking can be a pain as it's right in the center of La Jolla. They have everything from pot roast, quiche, pies, and sandwiches. Make sure to try their cookies!
