Ask Eater: Where Can I Have Breakfast for Dinner When Time Feels Like a Flat Circle? - Eater NY

"Girasol Bakery, a South Slope cafe with a vending machine that dispenses a half-dozen kinds of Flamin’ Hot snacks, is one of my favorites." - Luke Fortney

11 Restaurants Restoring Our Faith in NYC Burritos - Eater NY

"This South Slope cafe is open 24 hours, but it’s worth visiting during the morning when the smells of conchas and champurrado slip out onto the sidewalk. A small grill churns out huaraches, cemitas, and other Mexican fare, including a breakfast burrito different than most others in the city. A whole potato is boiled until tender and salty, then wrapped up with American cheese, griddled egg, and sausage or another breakfast meat. Pair it with with a cup of atole — or a bag of Takis, from a vending machine at the back of the restaurant — for a breakfast around $10." - Luke Fortney, Robert Sietsema

This place is cute and well kept. The tres leches came in a container that was not water tight and ended up all over me and the car. It tasted a lot like eggnog and the milk was thicker. The empanada plate was pretty good, I would order that again. That being said, I’m not sure I’d return. Overall, it was good. Proportions are solid. One meal fed two people

My friend and I went to find a rare place that develops film - in an era where we all use smartphones. After sending his film to the store in Brooklyn, we went to a local, humble tacqueria in the borough. The lady who served me and my friend was so nice and humble. My friend had to comment on why I gotta order a burger and fries in a tacqueria. But I got the food anyway and it tasted so good, with authentic ingredients only found in an A-grade tacqueria. I would go back and order again another time. In my friend’s case, he enjoyed his food so well that he ordered the same dish twice - and finished it clean. The place has a home vibe and I don’t mind stopping by again.

This is a hidden gem that’s not so hidden! I absolutely love it here, whether it was take out or delivery I’ve never been anything less then happy. This bakery sells the most delicious tostadas ever and they’re fresh. I’ve been ordering from here for five years and I have never experienced anything less than finger licking GOOD! One of my favorite desserts is their tres leches cake (three milk cake). Whew! Did I mention that they are affordable and filling with fresh produce? I think I’ve said enough— please try them out!

Use to love this place but not really sure what happened. I ordered two sandwiches one with no tomato or onions and one with everything. Instead our order was wrong and a hero… we could only eat half of the sandwich because the other half had no chicken. It was just lettuce and mayo. It was so expensive just to only enjoy half the sandwich for both sandwiches.

Every ingredient on their burritos was immaculate. That said, the burrito was made very poorly Not even exaggerating. All of the meat was on one side of the burrito with no sourcream(I paid for extra) or rice. The rest was beans, rices, lettuce, etc Photo I added was halfway through, after the chicken was eaten and rest was rice

The people working here are so warm, the aesthetic is clearly put together with effort and always reflecting the holiday while retaining the soul of the place, and the food is delicious. The place and people here are all gems. Honestly, I love this place!!

After waiting nearly half an hour for a single taco, I GAVE IT BACK. Not only did the Taco look unappetizing, I was shamed for saying that it was thing long; for asking how much more did I have to wait. A bully of a man then picked on me. He was the type that loves to put women in their place. I told him this matter doesn't concern you, thinking INCEL in my head. Whilst I was waiting NOTHING was being grilled. Instead the women to whom I had been so friendly were frantically cleaning with overpowering smell of bleach. I will never go there again. Apparently the food comes last. And this I saw clearly as I stared at the dry El Pastor taco pushed my way at last. I left it on the counter by the cashier. 5th Avenue in Brooklyn is a heaven for Mexican food. I've enjoyed a ton of it. I don't think these workers had real experience. My advice: avoid.

We’re lucky to have this place in the neighborhood. Good food, great prices, and good people.

Yelp
I was out with my co worker in the area and we decided to check out this spot. The place was small but once we walked in we got created and the place smelt good from what they were cooking and making. We both got tacos and quesadillas and I got a milk shake with milk. Wow! Delicious and highly recommended this taco spot!!!!

Yelp
Terrible customer service towards every day customers. Today at 12:59 i came into this restaurant for a meal as i do on my route & everything was fine . Amazing food btw but as i came to finish delivering my packages i returned back to the restaurant where i ate at and there were different staff there guessing afternoon staff and i asked the girl if i can use the bathroom, keep in mind i literally js ate there a few hours ago & she tells me no i cannot only for customers i then tell her that i am a customer that come in for break bc i work for the post office to eat and she still tells me no and began being rude and ignoring me i asked for her name and she literally ignored me multiple times . The photo below is her ,

Yelp
I use to come here a lot and loved it I'm not sure if the cooking team is new or new management but the food quality did change. I ordered 3 tacos all I can taste is salt and taco bread was so hard no one ate them!!!! We ate the tostadas even though it was very salty the tostada was eatable. The purple taco bread wouldn't rip! The food went to waste:(

Yelp
How someone can mess up a strawberry shake is beyond me. I was so disgusted by the milkshake, felt like they added so much water and there was a mountain of granulated sugar at the bottom of my cup. Huh?? I am so disappointed. The caramel on the flan tasted burnt and left a nasty after taste. The strawberry gelatin had a medicine aftertaste. Everything was terrible. I am so upset I spent $20 on literal crap. They used to be a decent place but now, it's straight up nauseating.

Yelp
I visited for lunch and was very delighted by their authentic Mexican food. I have been to other Mexican places in the area and this has been the best spot for authentic Mexican food. You get a taste of Mexico in Parkslope. There tacos are made from fresh blue corn tortillas, they have a Molino (corn grinder) on the premises which is used to make the tortillas from scratch. No other place offers such fresh tortillas like Girasol bakery. After indulging there delicious dishes you can treat yourself to freshly baked Mexican sweet bread. They have a variety of pastries and for the most part all of them are delicious. I will definitely be visiting again.

Yelp
This place is Open 24 hours. We usually go there for tacos. Beef Tacos are perfectly seasoned, get it w homemade tortillas. It's $1 more but worth it. My friend loves the tongue taco. Hibiscus juice is not too sweet. Works perfect w vodka!

Yelp
This place is AWESOME!!!! I just happened to come across it on grubhub, then i looked at the reviews and I decided to try them out. I am thrilled that I did! Best breakfast we have had in a long time. The baked good are fresh and delicious! The prices are even better! The breakfast taco with chorizo is next level good, with spicy notes from the chorizo. Very generous portion. The egg and cheese sandwich...HUGE! my co-worker could only eat half and loved it! I must confess I took a bite of half she left, it was cheesy and the bread super soft. The sugar donuts are also fresh and pillowy. The pastelito...sooon flavorful and flakey. The ham and cheese croissant is the tastiest buttery deliciousness that I was looking for...also HUGE. The concha...just soft and pillowy and a wonderful treat! I am so happy this morning, I look forward to ordering again!

Yelp
The service here is terrible I walked in to order a sandwich the lady took down one item walked away and came back and wrote a few other items that I didn't know what it was and proceed to give me an amount when I corrected her and removed the additional items she added on she told me 11 when the paper menu and the menu on the wall both said a sandwich was 7.50 and a tamales was 1.50 no matter which way you do the math it's $10. When we told her the menu was this price...she took the menu folded the menu in front of us and said it's old menu?!?, why are you not updating your menu both on the wall and on the paper menu... false advertisement much? Hoping their food is better than their service I updated my review after trying their steak chemitas and it's actually really good the avocado the Cuban steak and their sauce goes really well together and honestly I prefer Spanish cheese over American it's less heavy... this place is actually 3.5 but I decided to be nice and round up. I didn't end up getting the cake but apparently one slice is $5 is that a good price? I would come back for the food.
google avatar

Yelp
Went for a torta taste expedition to find the best flavorful most stuffed torta ever. As you can see, the sandwich is stuffed with chorizo and avocado. The flavor is great. However, the size is not as big as some of the ones I experienced. Overall, I would come back to try this place again. They also have a varieties of baked goods. The owner is very friendly and kept recommending different food to us

Yelp
This place is the best case scenario of...'You get what you pay for.' Insanely inexpensive Latin American pastries and simple savory fare. Trés Leche cakes in 4/5 varieties, lots of fruity, puff pastry mash-ups and the best assortment of freshly baked pound cake within walking distance. Quesadillas, sopas, tacos, et.al., all made to order and have that homemade appeal. Although fresh baked goodies are brought out all day long, the taste of lard and/or shortening, is unmistakable. Nothing beats butter and butter is better but butter is more bucks. If strictly enforced, sterile, food handling is paramount to you, this may not be your kinda place. However, if you travel to Latin American countries and enjoy food carts and locals selling foods that were prepared in their home kitchen, you will enjoy what's going on here. Cash only/open 24hrs.
google avatar

Yelp
Per usual another place that has good reviews on yelp but does not deliver the flavor. This place was just meh. I only tried the desserts though, so that is all I am judging here. The dessert was very basic and a few trials should have sufficed to make a decent dessert. They used way too much whip cream which is not really what a bakery place should do!!! I would not recommend the place!
google avatar

Danielle G.

Yelp
24 hour bakery find! Friendly service at 2:30am and made some very hungry ladies happy. I will be back to try their food menu and of course some more sugar donuts

Yelp
You have to go check out this place! Wow! I ended up stepping inside because I could smell the bakery from the sidewalk! I'm hooked! Breakfast, lunch, snack, treat? Name it, they have it! A 24 hour bakery that won't disappoint you! The price is worth the amount of food you get and it's delicious! Don't walk past again without at least taking a peek!

William M.

Yelp
Great food and super cheap! Plus 24 hours! Breakfast and pastries are excellent. Give it a try

Yelp
Delicious breads and pastries... cheese croissant was flavory and fresh ... a large variety of Mexican breads and cakes ... attentive table service.... very good prices... lastly... great coffee !!!
google avatar

Laura C.

Yelp
We have ordered almost everything off the menu and they never disappoint! Tortas, burritos, tostadas, sopes. Simply delicious. It's like a 20 minute walk for us, but absolutely worth it. Heads up that it's cash only.
google avatar

Yelp
We were starving one night and we walked past this place going to another spot. Needless to say the other spot was soooo horrible (sea witch) that we were still starving when we left. Sooo why not stop and the local 24hour bakery & plus!!! Its open late and the service was super friendly!!! They had a large selection of desserts and pastries. Plus what looked like a full lunch/dinner menu. If i am in the area i will go back and try more from there dessert selection and food menu!!!

Yelp
Craving a Mexican tres leches cake or some other fresh bakery goodies? Look no further than Girasol Bakery! For those of you that have never tried a slice of this piece of heaven -- let your mouth start to water reading this description. A tres leches cake is a light, airy sponge cake soaked with a mixture of three milks: evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and heavy cream. Yes, you heard me. No matter who invented it, it's absolutely delicious! Did I mentioned it only cost $2.00 for a slice and large share with two people? Grab a couple of spoons and enjoy! Girasol Bakery is my now go to Mexican bakery in the area!

Yelp
Love their hearty quesadillas and tacos! This please is my neighborhood go to for a quick dinner. :)

Yelp
Food: 3.0/5.0 Service: 2.5/5.0 Value: 3.5/5.0 Decor: 2.0/5.0 Overall: 2.5/5.0 Surprised how high the ratings here are. This is a very basic neighborhood spot serving a collection of standard bakery foods and drinks as well as tortas (:D) and juices. When I showed up in the middle of the afternoon, the display cases were actually fairly empty. An okay place to get some simple food and drinks, but this is very much not your typical well-maintained/decorated/stocked 4* bakery, so visitor beware..

Shaine F.

Yelp
Straight-forward, quick and delicious Mexican food. Their steak burrito and tostadas are always guaranteed to be flavorful. They also have a full bakery, and I never leave without a flan. They renovated and now take cash or card. They're also so nice!!
google avatar

Celine J.

Yelp
This spot is open 24 hrs 7 days a week!! Their bakery are delicious and you can get a slice a cake for $2. Their tacos are very filling and at a great price. They also have their signature hot sauce, which is VERY spicy.
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Place is bangin' and inexpensive. Open all night for drunk nachos, open all day for great carnitas tacos. Day crew is awesome and super efficient. Night crew can be a little cold.

Alex S.

Yelp
I love that this place is 24hours. I come here all the time & order the chicken tacos. Everyone that works here is super sweet. They're cash only, so come prepared.

Caroline C.

Yelp
We regularly call in their breakfast burrito and huevos rancheros. SO delicious and filling, especially the burrito which is only $6 and enough for lunch sometimes. They also have an awesome tres leches cake (get the one in the plastic container where the cake sits in the delicious milk/cream). I love this place. I speak Spanish and it may be worth you learning some for this place, hah!
google avatar

Elizabeth N.

Yelp
This bakery is open 24 hours and serves up tacos! In this neighborhood, most Mexican delis and bakeries do the same thing! I would skip most of the baked goods. They are not flavorful enough for my taste, but they are cheap if you want to give it a try! Now to the tacos.. definitely get the chicken tacos. They are the best compared to most other taco places. It's flavorful and the tacos are big here. However, they top their tacos with lettuce and tomatoes which I don't like as much compared to onions and cilantro.
google avatar

Yelp
If you are drunk or high and is in the South Slope area.... This is your place! I stumbled into Girasol with a few friends after a dinner in Sunset Park. We noticed that this place had fresh baked goodies. We were in the mood for dessert and we saw that they had Tres Leches. A good slice with whipped cream and a cherry costed us.... $3!!! Did I mention that I love Mexican Food and Mexican Bakeries? What makes this place even more great is that they are.... OPEN 24hours!!! Come here anytime and be satisfied!
google avatar

Karen T.

Yelp
I read good reviews about the tres leches, so I just had to try it. Maybe the Mexican version is different from the South American version because it did not taste like the tres leches that I know. There was fruit in the cream in the middle and there were nuts on top. There was also a hint of coffee flavor, which made me think of tiramisu. The cake itself was bland. But there was a pool of condensed milk on the bottom of the cake, so surely, it was tres leches? I did not like their version and was very disappointed.
google avatar

Bilge D.

Yelp
delicious tortas! a rarity in park slope. tasty mexican bakery items too. open 24 hours and outdoor seating.

Yelp
Just stopped by this place to grab a couple of tacos because I have been told they are very good. So I place my order 3 Tacos al pastor as I Am waiting for my tacos the lady that took my order is eating a plate of some fried meat with her bare hands not sure what it was but it must have been delicious because she kept sucking on her fingers. Then the lady on the grill passes my tacos to the finger sucking lady who then without washing her hands grabs a hand full of cilantro and a handful of onions and puts it on my tacos. " Miss you just sucked on your fingers and then prepared my food without washing your hands" she replied "no I did not" I told her to have a nice day and then left. Safe to Say I won't be eating here anymore

Donald C.

Yelp
Racist staff (bare minimum the cook is racist). For context, I am an African American male who frequently went to this establishment with my Egyptian partner purely due to the convenience of the location. Neither of us speak Spanish, which is very evident to the staff who almost exclusively only speak Spanish, especially to their majority Spanish-speaking customers. We started noticing very early on that our wait time for our food was significantly longer than nearly every other customer. We would watch as Spanish-speaking customers (presumably also Hispanic) who came in well after us would receive their orders much before us. It didn't matter if it was one person or 10 people - they got their order first. In this latest instance, we arrived at 9:45pm and ordered a spicy chicken quesadilla (for my partner who is muslim and can't eat pork) and a spicy pork taco (for myself). It took them 45mins-1hr to make our food and they served 8 other customers who ordered food before they served us, yet all of them arrived and ordered after us (all of which spoke Spanish to them). We asked them numerous times when our order would be ready and they would just say soon. Then, we get home and they got the order wrong. We received a spicy pork quesadilla and spicy chicken taco. My partner (who was supposed to get the chicken quesadilla) took a bite into the pork one, which she is not allowed to eat, so we threw it out. We called the place frustrated after waiting 45mins for the wrong food and after some back and forth they agreed that if we come in 15 minutes they'll have our food ready. We show up after 25mins and the cook had not even started the food. We got into an argument with both the cashier (who we talked to on the phone) and the cook. The cook refused to remake our food so we asked to speak to a manager. The manager wasn't there and they wanted us to come back at 3pm the next day to talk to the manager and MAYBE get our food. At this point it's 11/11:15pm and the cook is still refusing to make the order that they got wrong. Mind you, the receipt the cashier pulled out had the correct order written on it. Both the cook and the cashier could not give a single reason why the cook was refusing to make our food. The cook just kept on refusing and making food for OTHER people and the cashier kept on trying to take orders from other customers. After arguing some more, we simply demanded our money back from the cashier and left. There is a 0% chance we would be treated this way each time we spend our money here if we were Hispanic. We have given this establishment numerous opportunities to prove us wrong, but we cannot ignore the now obvious fact that race comes into play whenever we step in there. This establishment is racist, at the very least, towards black/darker toned non-Hispanic customers. Please do not go here again.

Christine T.

Yelp
Amazing tacos BUT they never know their prices on their food. One day its $3.75 for a chicken taco and another day its $4.50 Consistent in food but not their prices. Really annoying.
google avatar

Cristina R.

Yelp
Do not go here for baked goods- they are fine, but not fantastic (although they are very, very cheap.) Go for the savory, delicious mexican food. The tacos are fantastic and the tortas are the best in the neighborhood. Our so-cal mexican friend loves this spot, and the husband and I agree- it is the best authentic non-fancy mexican we have had in the city. Sure, there are better places if you want to spend $18 for a plate of mole... but if you want a solid taco for $2.75, this is the place to go. We frequently order enough to easily feed two adults with leftovers for under $15. The caveat is that it is sloowwwwwwwww... so I recommend calling ahead for pickup. Sunday mornings around 11-noon are a busy time so expect longer than normal waits. Regardless, I'd wait twice as long for the deliciousness that is Girasol.
google avatar

Hallie M.

Yelp
They have the best chicken nachos on Planet Earth. End of story. Don't argue with me. Flavor is great and they don't skimp on the chicken. These are authentic nachos people!! And you can get them at 4 am if you need to. How can you beat that? Small local business. Authentic. Delicious. No frills. Cash only.

Yelp
This is our go to bakery! We bought their rosca and we were not disappointed! It was warm and soft when we got home. So good! We also recently bought a tres leches cake, delicious and bigger than we expected! We've tried their Mexican dishes, pretty bomb! Their pan dulce is ok... we prefer their cakes and choco flan. I've yet to try their champurrado, they're always out when we get there... must be good??
google avatar

Yelp
Tres leche cake was insane delicious!! Going to get another one ! Pastries are delicious as well. Looking forward to trying the tacos.

Yelp
White people in Jirasol! I lived down the block and mostly did not see you! So 90%-95% percent of the clientele here was mexican and didn't speak english. I would come here at 1-4 AM three-four times a week and get tortas. Oh the tortas. Tacos good too. I haven't read the reviews yet but my friend from California said the tacos were "pretty good". A rave, Yelp! A rave! But I give it 5 and not maybe 4 (the food is 4, very good but there is better in Sunset Park and other places in Brooklyn/Queens/NYC and I haven't even been to some of those places) because it is 24 hours and everyone who worked the counter there was beautifully nice. Those two reasons are why you walk out of Quarter or new Freddy's or whatever the fuck make a right around 2:30-5 AM and go to Jirasol. I just saw one review talk about a bathroom. There isn't one in Jirasol unless for 2-3 years there was one and the wonderful non english speaking Mexican ladies behind the counter were hiding one. Well this makes me feel most uncertain now. Oh, if you go, the bakery items are mostly ok/good/not great. The tacos/tortas and...I forgot about this! Five stars!. Get the egg sandwiches and combine that with taco/torta/something else they had that is great tasting and I am forgetting it. This review had a few too many exclamation points! I am aware. Now go! Here! Which is Jirasol. In South Slope. Edit-The Pernil Torta!!!!
google avatar

R. T.

Yelp
Food and dirty napkins all over the floor and stools! Seriously, can the employees here even make an attempt to keep it clean? I can't even imagine what the kitchen looks like. (It was completely empty when I was there, so there's really no excuse.) Also, my vegetarian burrito was 95% lettuce, 5% tortilla. Gimme a break.

Yelp
Looking for a bakery that was open past 9pm on a Sunday and came upon Girasol Bakery. Got a chocolate cake and a cream puff like pastry. Don't know the names exactly because the lady in the bakery didn't know what they were called either. The chocolate cake was dry and and the cream puff like pastry with vanilla filling inside was so so. They make tacos too, but I came there for the pastry which was a disappointment. Maybe the tacos are better.....
google avatar

Dee ..

Yelp
Came here once and the tacos were great! came back again and they were very greasy with hardly any chicken.. so I guess you have to try your luck and come on a good day. But the first time I came the food was very good.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
Amazing food, open late, super cheap, huge portions. Tacos were great, the tostada looked incredible and a lot of people seem to order the Tortas. Very authentic with real life regulars throughout the night.
google avatar

Jen S.

Yelp
Tried to come here after midnight once and they refused to make anything because they claimed to have stopped grilling for the night. But strangely I could see the cook grilling right there behind the counter for another customer. I have to wonder if they play favorites here...
google avatar

Adam R.

Yelp
There exists a large range of places that exist somewhere between three and four stars. I'm going to be nice to these guys though, as they have some good stuff going for them. First of all, they're open late. This is important in a neighborhood that doesn't have a lot of late-night eating options. Their tacos are decent in taste. I don't know the name of it, but I've seen a lot of places that use this sort of pre-cooked meat that is put on to the griddle and cooked up. It always tastes decently, but never as good as fresh. But at midnight on a Wednesday, one can only be so picky. The fact that they jam-packed the taco with lettuce and cilantro was nice. The salsa verde was sort of bland, but then they have this orange/red chipotle cream sauce that was amazing. I doused the rest of my taco with it, and life was good. The torta was also pretty decent. Being that it was a bakery, the bread was soft. The rest of the torta was pretty decent. Not overly great, but I'd order it again. Didn't have a chance to try a dessert, as the taco and torta filled me up, but a few people ordered them, and they were scrumptious looking.
google avatar

Samantha F.

Yelp
AMAZING coffee. Scary men there late at night at the bar-thing. Little creepy. Definitely not an eat-in spot, but they have amazing food. I'm a vegetarian but got drunk, ate a torta cubano that made me want to start eating meat again. The mix of mayo, fresh lettuce and tomato, whatever meat was in it and the bombed out bread made me finish it and then take my boyfriend's half when he went to the bathroom. DELISH. If you ever want a hannah montana cake for your kiddie, this is the place to GO! I'll also probably get my wedding cake there. Just kidding.

Fatima M.

Yelp
Sooooo delicious, their tacos are the bomb!!!!! And their steak and cheese sandwich is amazing !! Definitely my new fave spot to eat at! If you want authentic Mexican food or just really tasty sandwiches this is your spot! Super sweet employees and clean spot!
google avatar

Krystal C.

Yelp
The fact that they are open for 24 hours is amazingly perfect!! they make amazing Spanish coffee like no other place within this neighborhood. I've had their tacos and burritos and never been disappointed. I'm kind of sad that it took me 2 years of living in this neighborhood before I finally found this venue.

Jessy P.

Yelp
I am beyond upset with this restaurant. I had ordered a quesadilla with only cheese and meat. And had it sent to deliver to my job. They took over an hour to deliver my food. COLD! And they messed up on my order completely. When I called regarding their mistake the lady on the phone presumed to blame me for the mistake! And so I guess to fix their mistake they offered to send my order again which they ultimately never delivered. After work I went to visit them to ask for a refund and they refused to give me anything. No refund, no explanation, and no apology for their mistake. They insisted I come the next morning to talk to the worker that placed my order, and just laughed at me for bringing the food that they had done wrong. I will never order from them again.

Yelp
Late-night tacos carnitas, two for $5... Incredible! Of the five or six tacos offered (chicken, enchilada, carne, lengua, carnita, chorizo), the carnita is far and away the best. Huge portions with cilantro and onions, plus lettuce tomato if requested, The homemade hot sauce is unreal; ask for a side to take home for your scramble eggs the next morning (or afternoon). THe Cubano and Steak Sandwich are very good but a bit bread-heavy and pricey at $8... Stick to the tostadas, tacos. At times they have pollo guisado (stewed chicken with tortillas, rice and beans... incredible). The girls that serve you are very nice, patiently putting up with droopy-eyed drunks night after night.

Yelp
While visiting NYC, ended up over in a Brooklyn a couple days. Luckily, hooked up with some locals, which is how I ended up at Girasol. My buddy ended up ordering a torta for me, which I have no idea what kind it was. All I know is that it was delicious, and really filling...and messy. But that's what a good sorta is, messy. Will totally go back when in the neighborhood.

Yelp
24 hours, right near the bars, tacos, tortas and dessert. This place is pretty much the best. Everything is standard issue good, nothing to criticize.
