The Best Middle Eastern Restaurants in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Gita Pita came to New Orleans by way of Michigan, after owner Adham Kader and family moved to town a few years and brought the fast-casual concept with him. Inspired by Palestinian street food, Kader serves a menu of build-your-own shawarma bowls and wraps that revolve around saj bread, Gita Pita’s specialty. The restaurant is on the Canal streetcar line in Mid-City." - Beth D’Addono

Google
Best pita place I've been to in years. Service was top notch and very friendly. They even helped pick out some great choices. After getting the food it was so good and fresh. Flavors bursting with every bite. We will be back to try more. Can't wait to get back to Grand Rapids.

Alina Phoenix

Google
The food was tasty, and the people working were doing their very best to keep up and be very pleasant about it, but they were understaffed. The food was also a little pricey for the portion. I had 1 gyro pita, and it was over $20 with tip. I didn't even get fries or a drink with it. The food was enjoyable, I just felt kind of bad for the swamped employees (I've been there) and I was a little disappointed with portion to cost ratio.

Kyle

Google
You got to train your staff to properly wrap. Super disappointed to get back and see the foil falling off the wrap, the pita is cracking cause it was heated too long with no spray and the filling falling out of both ends and the middle

Jon Brasic

Google
Stopped in for a quick dinner before going to a play. Ordered the pita which was a little pricey but very tasty. The reason I will not return is the atmosphere. This place is absolutely filthy. Dirty floor, Dirty walls Dirty chairs and tables made for an unpleasant eating experience. The food is very wet and is served on a tray with a sheet of wax paper. I am assuming the majority of their business is take out, which is good because the dine-in experience was unpleasant.

Google
Gita Pita is my favorite place to eat. When others ask where I’d like to go, Gita Pita is on my mind. I don’t make it in as much as I’d like to and it’s unfortunate because the staff has always been so wonderful. Thank you Gita Pita for your delicious food. The Steak Shawarma bowl is my new favorite!

Chloe Embury

Google
The food was good, but I got overcharged! I got a gyro on Pita with a small side of hummus and one extra pita and got charged 33 dollars! From my math from the menu in the store, it should have been around 26 dollars. I even remember the card reader saying 23 dollars, and then I put a 10% tip. I didn't take the receipt, so there is nothing I can do about it, but I won't be back! TAKE YOUR RECEIPT!!!

James Lang

Google
I think the prices are a bit too much for the portion of meat that's given on your gyro. The meat was already cooked, cut, and stored away, ready to serve. Which isn't a bad thing but I would like to have my meat freshly cut and cooked right there when I order. The gyro wasn't giving the taste I was looking for even with all the extras veggies on it. I've bought way better tasting gyros for cheaper combo prices. It costed me almost $50 ($46.40) for two gyros combos which is ridiculous. The dressed up fries wasn't good at all, and the fountain pop tasted old. If you want to just give your money away, shop here but if you looking for quality gyros shop around cause there are plenty more places around grand rapids areas that are much more worth it. This was my first time trying this place and definitely will be my last.

Google
Nice vegan food, not overly cheap but a fair size portions. Became one of my favourites in GR. Also have a large indoor sitting area, if you have a big group.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing gyro bowl and garlic sauce!!! The fresh pita was wonderful as well. Ordered via uber eats and food was still fresh.

Hayley D.

Yelp
Very small portions for a high price, the tzatziki was pickley so it had to have been made day or two old, they use a very flat pita that is much closer to a tortilla than a pita, and their greek fries are actually just potato chips with feta and oil on top. Two wraps, "fries", and a drink was nearly $50. Seems like greek food with an american twist? but i was hoping for actual greek food.

Terrence I.

Yelp
This lunch experience was particularly disappointing, since the place was recommended to me by people that I trust. The service was painfully slow and the food was terrible. I got the special pita, which is a combo of lamb and beef. The problem is that it was cold. Not room temperature, but refrigerator cold. The vegetables were the center core of cabbage that was so hard to bite through, that it was painful to bite. I will never go back

Yelp
So good! The food was so savory and delicious and the customer service was amazing. The setting was very nice considering it was the holidays. I will definitely come back!

Jackie L.

Yelp
The food is really fresh and delicious. Love the baba ghanoush and the gyros are fantastic. Right near my work.

Yelp
I ordered a chicken shawarma bowl while we were at a hotel and used door dash for delivery. Delivery and time to get order was great, but the meal itself was disgusting. That has to the the worst chicken shawarma I have ever had. It looked like soup with pickles floating and the chicken had zero flavor. Maybe I'm spoiled living close to Dearborn but this "shawarma" has to be a joke. I'm mad I spent money on that.

Abby P.

Yelp
My chicken shawarma bowl was fresh, beautiful, and delicious! The Gita fries were crisp and so good. The falafel was perfect. Such a great spot - I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Best falafel ever. So good. Garlic sauce also delicious. Service is always friendly not particularly fast.

Yelp
three words... homemade saj bread i love char (owned by the same owner and connected to gita pita) so i had a feeling I would love gita pita. my feeling was correct. i ordered online for pick up and got a falafel pita and then chicken shawarma pitas for my aunt and boyfriend. these boys were saucy! and i love wet food so when i saw the tinfoil wrap covered in sauce I knew this would be a good meal. the homemade saj bread is amazing... chewy, soft, delicious...all the good things. the falafel weren't dry and had good flavor. i would definitely get gita pita again. one thing that keeps me from ordering as often (char too) is the price. this food is a little pricey at $13 a pita (good chicken shawarma at a middle eastern restaurant you're only paying around $7 so this is almost double the price and tbh I was still hungry). still great food though just not something you would want to drop $13 on all the time to eat.

Yelp
Just a note: This review is only for the falafel and the service; we didn't get anything else. SO: We were downtown and wanted a quick snack...NOT a full meal. We wandered around and found this place. Did you know you can order falafel, HOWEVER many you want? We got a half dozen, and wished we'd gotten a half dozen more, but we were running late. They were freshly scooped and made, and cooked right in front of us. Served steaming hot, with a topping (we got garlic sauce), this was the best falafel I've ever had. DELISH!! The lady helping us was funny, kind, and so thoughtful. I wish more people would be as helpful as she was. if you love falafel, this is your place!

Yelp
Wow! Fresh ingredients, great flavors, and hefty portions. What's not to love ! My daughter and I had the classic gyro and it did not disappoint! I especially loved the variety available for the toppings! I added purple cabbage and pickles. These pickles though...wow...they were tangy and sliced thin. They added a nice crunch to my gyro. The lamb/beef mixture was very flavorful and juicy. I was able to get a fresh batch they just pulled off the grill! The service was friendly but I would have appreciated a little more help deciding what to order. I hadn't been there before and would have liked to hear about their specialties like the Greek fries. I sort of had to pull the info out of them. Either way, I will be back to try some of the other menu items.

Yelp
This place has pretty awesome Greek food. The meats are superbly flavored and they have a nice quick service style like chipotle. One of the most awesome things about this place is that they make the bread fresh! I had the gyro which was expertly flavored and the green yogurt sauce included balanced out the well spiced meat and complimented the warm fresh flat bread. Their fries are more chips but they are fresh thick chips/pseudo fries and are some of the best that I've ever had. Some other positives about this place beyond the food is that there aren't a ton of places in GR that offer halal options and they are one of them! They also have vegetarian options and a large seating area. Service was amazing as well. The only negatives here is that the seating area is not very nice and feels like a food court. In addition, the food is rather expensive for a food quick service location - a wrap, drink, and fries cost ~$23! I would give a 5 star if it were more in the $15 price range. Definitely will stop by again, but will likely forgo the drink

Yelp
We've been going to Gita Pita since they were in Cascade years ago. They have my FAVORITE Baba Ganoush - I LOVE the smoky flavor. I also love how flavorful and crisp the falafels are. My solution pictured here: Gyro Fattah Baba Ganoush Bowl with an extra Falafel They are super friendly and walk you through each step and all the toppings, super easy and DELICIOUS! Pro Tip: They also own Char next door and share an eating area - so pick up some fusion tacos next door for a super delicious meal! Pro Tip: Get Thai rolled ice cream across the street! Strawberry Shortcake

Yelp
Amazing falafel! The chicken bowls are delicious too. They have alcohol and indoor seating.
google avatar

Diego J.

Yelp
The Greek fries are just soggy chips with feta cheese and the pita lacks flavor. It's overpriced for the quality of food. Only good thing is you get to customize your order.

Yelp
Gita Pita ⁣ ⁣ Gita Pita is located on the corner of Jefferson Ave and Fulton St in the Heritage Hill neighborhood. Their Mediterranean menu is fresh, light, and oh-so-good. The service is fast, and if you get a Pita, it's freshly grilled and then wrapped in foil; so it's easy to take with you if you're an on-the-goer like me. ⁣ ⁣ Boy do I love all the comfort food and brewery plates that GR serves up, but sometimes you just crave something fresh (ya feel me?) - next time you get that craving, head to Gita Pita. ⁣ ⁣ My go-to order is a Gyro Pita with harath (sliced tomato and cucumber), feta and garlic sauce. It's perfect for a filling lunch on a busy day where you don't have time for the occasional 2pm slump. ⁣

Yelp
Food is great. Hadn't been back in several years, but it was just as good as I remember. Falafel wrap is delicious and their homemade pita like bread is so good.

Yelp
I'm really disappointed this restaurant. I ordered their stuff, but they kept us waiting for a long time!!Also, food was looks not fresh and not good quality.

Yelp
From the freshly toasted pita to the made-to-order falafel, Gita Pita is just so delicious, and it is my go-to for a quick bite of Mediterranean / Middle Eastern flavors. I usually get the Chicken Shawarma bowl with a side of three falafel. The falafel is definitely my favorite in town! The bowls come with rice, but I opt for a lettuce base. Then you get to choose from a number of toppings (red cabbage, feta, crushed pita chips, etc.) and sauces (tahini, tzatziki, garlic, etc.). If I'm feeling indulgent, I add on the Gita Fries, which are basically potato chips. Gita Pita is also connected to Char. So, you can have the best of both worlds - pita and tacos! I like to get the chicken broth from Char to go with my bowl. Now, Gita Pita is a fast-casual, no-frills environment, excellent for a quick meal, but not really a place to linger. Be sure to sign up for the rewards program as well. You get 1 point for each $1 spent. 100 points = $10 credit. After you have Gita Pita, you'll be back and with friends!

Yelp
Drove all the way to GR from Florida and I was so excited to have Gita Pita again. Their pita is so unique, and I love it. The storefront is clean, and staff are so friendly and quick. I love the topping choices, and I find that their garlic sauce really makes the pita! The only thing I would mention is that the Greek fries were so soggy. They didn't cook individually but bunched together into one giant soggy ball. We enjoyed a couple of yummy bites before tossing the order.
google avatar

Joseph B.

Yelp
Quick and friendly service from the one guy working at night. Good deal for a downtown place. And tasty food. Falafel Pita was nice!
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
Ordered from this this restaurant on Uber Eats because I am at a hotel No utensils, no napkins, no pita, no dressing on the salad Big waste of money!

Logan M.

Yelp
We went right when they open and were helped right away. The ambiance is like a deli, with plenty of seating. I was excited to get the falafel wrap, but was not overly impressed - however their garlic sauce was very good!
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
Upon entering Gita Pita you'll see a counter similar to a Subway chain - the menu is separated out by the different entree types (pitas, bowls, etc). I ordered the falafel bowl but normally go with something that has a hummus base - this time I had a yellow rice base; it was okay but go for the hummus! Also, be sure you get a pita on the side - they make them right there and they're delicious! Get there before the lunch rush and you're golden.
google avatar

Paul N.

Yelp
I love the food, but ordering on their website does not work. Ordering online is convenient, but the big delivery companies (like Grubhub and Doordash) bully the vendors into doing things their way. They won't let you phone the order into the restaurant for delivery - even if you have an order that the online services can't take. Sadly, Yelp is now invested in deliver services, so they aren't going to help fix it.
google avatar

Emily E.

Yelp
Big potions, cheap prices, fast food. Gotta love college towns. Gita pita was the perfect pit stop on the way to the lake. Quick and easy without being weighed down by greasy fast food chains. The pita breads are charred on a massive cast iron or stone dome. Delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Been a customer for many years. Normally love this place and take out of town friends to enjoy. Our last 3 orders have been very disappointing. 1 order was a pickup. The wrap was not heated which was a normal thing done before adding the stuffing. My husband asked about it and was told that's not how it was done. Brought it home and everything on the inside was cold. No heat. Felt like it came right out of the fridge. Last 2 orders were delivered both with no heat. Felt exactly like the other. It's hard to blame the coldness on travel because we have done it for years with no problem. Not sure why it's become a problem now. Maybe because the staff is working 2 restaurants at once? They also own the place next door and I have seen employees with that restaurants uniforms making our food. Or to save money/time? I am just going to assume it's the new normal and most likely not going to order from there again. If you wish to order I recommend the chicken, steak or falafel. All the sides, toppings, sauces and spreads were good. Unfortunately the gyro meat was not edible. Never had the baklava.
google avatar

Stephanie E.

Yelp
It was a move place for lunch and I very much enjoyed my meal. The staff was very friendly and gave us a run down of the menus since it was put first time. Holy cow was it expensive for lunch. Ended up walking out with a total cost of $45 for two lunches made into a meal. So I am not sure how soon we will be back. Not even sure how it added up so fast! The potato chips could use a little work. They were not crispy but a bit soggy, hence why I gave 3 stars and the price did come as a shock at the end.

Shawon C.

Yelp
Making this short and sweet. We ordered take out after a long drive from up north. Once we got home, we found that they had gotten half our order wrong, and most of the food was either squished or submerged in juice making it inedible. I'm sure the food is good when you dine-in, and the workers had a long day of hard work; however, it is incredibly disappointing and frustrating to pay for food that is below satisfactory.
google avatar

Grendel K.

Yelp
I ordered the gyro. The meat was cut in blocks instead of thinly sliced. I got a very sparse serving. They got on the till kept talking to someone on his hands free totally ignoring the customer in front of him. Tasty enough but there are better. The baklavas were very dry. Avoid those.
google avatar

Wylynn C.

Yelp
I think they treat their employees bad & don't pay them enough because they have a revolving door of new employees constantly. for this reason, there's absolutely no consistency.
google avatar

Soar I.

Yelp
I always walk by this place on my way to school. I finally decided one night to not cook for myself (which I consider dangerous to do out here in Grand Rapids because of the too frequent disappointments). I was greeted as soon as I walked in. I asked for the guy's favorite meal (him being a relative of the owner and this being his people's food). He perked up and told me to get the chicken shawarma pita and the steak shawarma pita. I told him I'd get those two then. He asked if I had any dietary restrictions, and then excitedly crafted my meal. Sweet guy. Will come back!

Ami H.

Yelp
Absolutely NOT worth the money!!! What a joke. The food is mediocre at best and super small portions. This is $38 "worth" of food. Good luck finding a shred of meat on the $14 gyro, no fries, NOTHING comes with it. I would ZERO if possible.

Morgan P.

Yelp
I'm literally eating their food right now! It's so good that I had to write a review. First off, the staff were very friendly and worked quick which is nice because I was on my lunch break! I love how they wrap the food (to go orders) in foil that way it stays hot / warm. I ordered chicken pita, 2 falafels and Greek fries and my total was about $14! Really nice price for a lot of food! I will be back!
google avatar

Jenn W.

Yelp
Ordered delivery last night only to receive a message 1 minute after the approximated delivery time....."Your order has been cancelled" I had already received an order confirmation and waited 30+ minutes while my food was "being made". It was getting late when I ordered from Gita Pita. Now that I sat around waiting for food that would never come, my options for delivery were even slimmer. Thanks to Palace of India, I got to eat last night. Will probably be a while before I try Gita Pita again, this was really crappy. Don't confirm orders if you have no intention of making them.
google avatar

Kerry F.

Yelp
Finding myself downtown for a training, I popped into Gita Pita for a quick dinner. I was greeted enthusiastically and there was no line at 5:30pm. I ordered the gyro fattah bowl (which really is large enough to be split between 2) I love that Gita pita lets you customize and that their food isn't overly garlicky or onion laden. I do wish their "spicy" sauce actually was or that they had some hot peppers. I am a HUGE fan of their pita bread. It's thin, and chewy, almost bordering on gummy. I think people either love this or hate it, (my husband is not a fan and likes more traditional pita, but yay I'll eat his) It is a little on the expensive side but they give really good portion sizes and all the ingredients were super fresh.
google avatar

Anna B.

Yelp
Gita Pita is so good! Freshest food made right in front of you. Warm thin pita bread, yummy falafel, creamy tatziki! Get the greek fries in the side you won't regret it!
google avatar

Kate S.

Yelp
This was one of the best gyros that I have had! I was able to try out all the different meat before I decided what type of pita that I wanted. There is a variety of bowls, pita, hummus and plates available. The pita comes wrapped in tin foil and was easy to eat and walk with! They even had delicious baklava for dessert!

Katherine N.

Yelp
God. I want to give them a good review, I really do. The food is delicious -- when it's correct. I keep giving them another chance, once a month or two. And I am perpetually disappointed. Unless you are there, in person, to correct them when they start dumping things you don't want and didn't ask for into your food, don't get Gita Pita. It doesn't matter how clear you try to make your order. It doesn't matter how many notes you write, in how many ways, or how many times you repeat yourself on the phone. They will not listen to you, and you will not get what you ordered. I have thrown away more food from Gita Pita than I have eaten due to them adding garnishes I can't eat when I didn't ask for them, and in fact SPECIFICALLY STATED I DID NOT WANT THEM. Such a disappointment.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
This is the perfect place to go when you've become tired of the heavy brewery food and need something fresh. We went here somewhat close to close because we wanted nutrients that didn't come from beer cheese. When we looked a little overwhelmed by the menu, the person working at the time offered to give us a rundown and a few samples of their house-made baba ganoush. Like many places in GR, everything is made in-house. This rundown was so helpful without being the least bit judgemental. We loved what we got so much that we went here twice on our 4-5 day visit to GR. Excellent food with the service to match!
google avatar

Shereen C.

Yelp
Gita Pita makes the best falafel I've ever had. Each falafel ball is made to order, shaped, then perfectly deep-fried (crispy on the outside but moist on the inside). The "pita" is made fresh and also very good. This pita is more like roti, with the wonderful chewy texture of roti rather than the sponge-y bread that many other falafel vendors use. The food server was very friendly and helpful. The person (manager?) at the cash was not as friendly and was slowly going through all the receipts for about 10 minutes before he had time to let me pay. Highly recommend the Falafel Pita. 5 stars. ($7.41 including taxes in July 2016)
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
So I stopped in and got a chicken pita and Gita fries. Not only was I surprised by how good it was. I'll definitely be going back. They were extremely friendly and helpful with me figuring out what I wanted on my pita, and everything I got was delicious. The garlic cream sauce is amazing and they even gave me some for my fries. I'd definitely recommend based in everything that I experienced.

Yelp
After watching Christmas lights at Fifth Third ball park, we wanted to pick up a quick meal and being past 9:30 pm, majority of the restaurants were already closed. That's when we came across Gita Pita. It's located in downtown - great choice, as we can walk around ( which we couldn't as it was cold and too late) but maybe during the day. Though it was 20 mins before closing, the staff did not show any rush or pushed us to order faster. They were very nice and patient. We got the veggie pita and falafel. One bummer was that they don't use pita bread (though the name says pita) it's a tortilla that's used in the wrap. They did cook the tortilla in front of us, and falafel was as fresh as it can get, they fried it as we placed the order and it definitely was delicious. The garlic sauce was very subtle ( we like it more strong) and overall except the tortilla and falafel we could not taste anything more as flavors were too subtle. The kitchen did look a bit old and worn out but there was no comprise on food. However, it's a good place for a quick bite and decent food. It was too dark to take pictures and we were starving after spending 4 hours at the park - so, sorry no food pictures.
google avatar

Kyle V.

Yelp
Service is always top notch and the food is all tasty. Sometimes it is very greasy though which isn't great but everything I have tried has great flavor. The Greek fries are great as well. Perfect walking spot from any downtown location. Parking is all metered and enforced.

Yelp
So far, Gita Pita is my favorite fast food place in GR. Inexpensive, fast, not entirely unhealthy, ample options, and of course, it hits most of the right buttons as far as quality and flavor. I like the pita they use. Not exactly traditional, but unlike the tough, dry pita that Sami's uses, it's warm, easier to chew, and holds together a lot better. Sami's falafel balls are only slightly better/more flavorful and they have pickled beats as an add-on option (Gita Pita does not, sadly), but all-in-all I like Gita Pita slightly better. Chicago Style Gyro is also a pretty decent pita place in town, so I'll have to review them soon as well.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
Um, I love this place so much. The falafel is off the chain. Freshly fried chickpea cakes for your order. Chewy, fresh pita. Get the garlic sauce. Add the veggies and cabbage. And hot sauce. Do it. Casual, quick Mediterranean that doesn't feel all that casual. It feels serious. It feels like a life long connection.
google avatar

Yelp
Yep going 5 stars here. This place was absolutely awesome. We stopped in on a Saturday after the children's museum and the owner was doing everything because he had two employees not show up. Yet he was still very nice and took the time to apologize to everyone in line for the delay and that he was by himself. He still did a wonderful job getting people through without sacrificing quality. Now for the food. My wife had the gyro pita which was excellent and filling. Me and the kids each had a fatta gyro bowl and my God is it plentiful and very very tasty. There portions are big and fill you up quickly. Also the Gita fries were very good with the sauce. We found our Mediterranean spot here in GR that's for sure. I highly suggest this spot to grab some great food!

Yelp
Love this place. One of the best in GR. It's a once a week staple. Have had almost everything on menu, but love their steak shawarma is my favorite.

Yelp
OMG THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! I had never been here and I am now in LOVE. I wish I could go back every single day for lunch. This place is set up like a fast casual line (think Subway or Qdoba). From the suggestions of my coworkers I decided to get the Gyro Hummus Bowl, which was hummus topped with a spicy red sauce, gyro meat, veggie toppings of your choice, sauce and cheese of your choice and then you get 2 giant crisped up, extra chewy "tortillas" to RIP & DIP, as they said. The portion seemed big for lunch, but it was so big I couldn't even finish it (and that is so unlike me lol). Every single component to that meal was absolutely delicious and I would wholly, 100% recommend it to everyone. There were different protein choices as well. We went a little bit before noon, because it gets super busy at that time of the day (and it did). The 3 guys behind the counter were exceptionally nice, especially to me who had never been there and they were willing to explain the system and different dishes to me. Honestly, it was expensive, but I do believe that the item that I ordered was the most expensive thing on the menu. I will absolutely be going back, and I am pretty sure that I could easily split a meal with someone for lunch.
