One of South Philly’s New Barbecue Spots Is Already Closed | Eater Philly

"I noted that Robert Passio of Reading Terminal Market’s butcher shop Giunta’s Prime set up a butcher counter next to Smokhaus, but that counter closed as well because the licenses were under the Smokhaus umbrella; Passio says he is looking at reopening in another South Philly location." - Rachel Vigoda

I've been shopping here for 3 years only get my meats from here. Very fresh, friendly customer service. Never ever any complaints and they deliver.

Fresh meat great cuts and friendly service, Highly recommended this butcher shop.

🚨Gloveless Disheveled Worker Alert 🚨 Service was below standard; this was definitely my last trip! Worker serviced me without gloves and oddly I couldn’t purchase only flats. As mentioned during my service I thought that was one of the perks of the terminal was to select my own meats..? Honestly I would’ve left the items I purchased but I didn’t have any other option.

Roasted a 10# Lamb Shoulder for Thanks giving from my favorite butcher, Giunta's. Turned out great!

Google
Bought two pieces of lemon and herb marinated chicken yesterday and when I opened tonight it smelled strongly of rotten eggs. Not what I expect from a place that’s marketed as a fresh meat purveyor.

Google
Amazing customer service and good prices. We came in with a couple of out of the ordinary requests for our dog. They helped us with our order, and one employee even went to another part of the mall to look for beef heart and liver. They cut everything exactly to order and even clipped the nails off the chicken feet for our dog. I wish we lived in the area, we would buy all of our meat there.

1. I love this place but today was unacceptable. Unfortunately being a minority you have that fear and the man that waited on us displayed just that on top of the look on his face which seemed like he didn’t want to wait on us 👎🏽. 2. I had to double take thinking “i know he’s not picking the chicken up with his bare hand….he was! I had to walk closer to make sure, Ive NEVER seen a worker there not use a glove. I thought he was going to wash his hands after bagging the chicken but NO he touched the bag we had to carry, the apple pay machine and he picked somebody’s else’s steak up with the same hand. I work in the industry so at least in front of customers wear gloves. Im hoping he wasn’t just being nasty to the colored people. They probably should just have him in the boh because everything about his aura was off.

Yelp
I have heard so many great reviews about A5 Wagyu beef and as soon as I saw their Instagram post about the arrival of the Wagyu beef, I had to stop by. It is a bit over $100 per pound so I got a little less than 1 pound. The guys working there are super friendly and welcoming. He explained that the beef came from Japan. He recommended the best way to cook this precious beef. It melts in your mouth. I cooked it on a hot ungreased non stick skillet, seasoned with salt and pepper. It only takes 6 minutes to cook on both sides. For once in a lifetime, you need to try this, worth every penny.

Yelp
These folks never failed to deliver. No matter what I need, and when I need it, they always have it, or can get it fairly quickly. On one particular occasion, the owners little girl saved me as I was having additional guests and a turkey breast they ordered would've been too small and she really really made it happen for me and got me the size I needed. you can really really tell the difference in the quality of the meats at this place and it shows in a big way.

Yelp
Love love love Giuntas's. During the pandemic I'm cooking a lot more and Giunta's offers a few meat packages that contain everything I need. I usually call a day ahead (215.627.6175) so my order is ready upon my arrival. My bags are always super heavy so I always park on Filbert St and enter Reading Terminal through the doors at Iovine Brothers Produce , Giunta's is next to them. Tip ... - talk to the employees at Giunta's, they offer phenomenal cooking tips on their meats. - I was told you can also have Giunta's meat orders delivered for free if you live within 15 miles of Reading Terminal

Yelp
Best butcher shop in Philly. Meat is fresh and great selection. Great service and great vibe in Reading Terminal.

Yelp
This meat shop is totally worth venturing into the crowded Reading Terminal Market for! There's such a great selection of meats at really reasonable prices, and the workers there are super helpful with my questions. If you're in the area and need groceries for dinner, pop on by here then go across the aisle for produce at Iovine Brother's!

Yelp
Giunta's is located in the Reading Terminal Market. They sell all kinds of chicken, pork and beef. The meat is fresh and there's a variety of cuts. You can buy a whole, half, wings, cutlets, and pieces of chicken. There's so many cuts of beef too. The flank steak is amazing. You can also get premade kabobs and stuffed steak. The ground chicken and beef are also good. The ground beef made a delicious burger. It had a some grease but that's why it was a juicy burger! Prices are good-- little higher than supermarket but it's definitely a better quality. It's a great place to stop to pick up a last minute dinner on the way home from work. My fellow Yelpers when you check I. You get a free 1 lb of ground beef no purchase necessary! They were really nice too.

Yelp
I've co-hosted an event with Giunta's Prime meat front and center! Cooking a cornish turducken (a cornish hen, inside of a chicken, inside of a duck, inside of a turkey) is no easy task, but our main man at this perfect shop makes it all possible. The was a quick turn around for the order, and they deboned the birds same-day as the pick up. Talk about freshness! Prices are alright for Reading, and also was able to pick up some lamb that looked amazing. Anything you need, ask for it and they can figure it our for you. The market gets busy around lunch time, holidays, and evenings, but calling ahead will get you the quickest service. Even without calling ahead, though, it's worth it to march over and wait a few minutes for most of your meat needs.

Yelp
You'll get your money worth. I stop here all the time when I'm downtown. Great prices

Jewel L.

Yelp
Came here November 2022. I have memories of meat markets like this in NJ that aren't there anymore. This seemed to have everything and it looked very fresh. When I stay in town longer, I will definitely come and pick some juicy meat up. I didn't get to try any of the meat so I'm only giving a rating of a four. I'd highly recommend check this meat market out and maybe you can leave me a note if you enjoy the meat.

Yelp
Amazing selections and good pricing ,service is quick can't wait to grill up these monster steaks

Yelp
Another meat review at Reading Terminal. At least this will be a pleasant and fairly easy review. I stop by this market after five but noticed my normal meat spot was closed. Luckily, I found this shop. Their service was friendly and attentive and considerate. I order 10 lbs of chicken thighs and 3 lbs of pork chops. All boned in and it totaled roughly $35. It is fairly priced since it's been two days since I bought the meats and I'm close to half way done. Overall, I think this shop might beat the other meat joint I was visiting.

Yelp
Giunta's is probably my absolute favorite butcher shop in Reading Terminal. I love to come here, tell them what I am thinking of cooking and getting their recommendations on what type of meat to buy and tips on preparation. There are so many cuts of meat and sausages to choose from, the staff is so helpful friendly, they are always willing to give advice if you you don't know what to get. Tell them what you like and they have suggestions! No only do they have various cuts of meat for you to prep yourself, but they have fresh sausage, stuffed chicken and steak, etc. Pre-made kebobs, and so many other options...if you want it, just ask, they most likely have it or can tell you how to make it. They are reasonably priced, and you can tell their product is fresh and high quality. I must visit if you are at Reading Terminal Market and need to stop at a Butcher!

Yelp
Ordered through mercato, never got my 33 dollars worth of lamb chops, but was charged. Thankfully Mercato refunded my money to my card. I don't know who screwed up here, but both businesses will be held accountable as far as I'm concerned. I'll be using one of the other butchers for my meats from now on.
google avatar

Bob C.

Yelp
I've been going here for years. Nothing is really cheap in Philly, so why not get your beef at a quality butcher if the price difference isn't all that much? Don't waste your time at a supermarket. The prices here are solid, and you're getting a premium product. Enough said. You guys rock. Shoutout to the entire staff for always being friendly and attentive AF.
google avatar

Donna B.

Yelp
I love Giunta's. I buy my party wings from here weekly. The wings are the right size and a great price. The staff are friendly and efficient. My only issue is after I bought my wings one day I saw the guy refilling the wings and he DID NOT have gloves on. I was shocked he was using his bare hands. Even before COVID this isn't acceptable. Aside from this the meats are always fresh. I'll continue to shop here, but may speak to the manager about the issue.

Yelp
Best butcher, meat shop in Philly, I haven't been there in so long cause I worked in the same building and it was more convenient...but it looks like I'm stopping by to see what I'm making for Christmas. Rob the owner is the most cool, relaxed, funny Italian guy you can have a conversation with! I'll be stopping by soon! I hope they still make the thin freshly breaded chicken cutlets I miss a lot! No matter how I bread my cutlets never comes out as flavorful as his. You don't need to even season the cutlets, they are so flavorful already with the awesome breading they use. They are a must when you go to reading terminal market.

Yelp
This is my go-to butcher for basic meat necessities. They have just about everything, and if they don't, they will get it for you. Try to go during off times at the market, as they can get crowded around 5. Favorites to get here: Ground beef (3 cut blend), makes perfect burgers! Ground turkey: Of all the butchers in Reading Terminal Market, theirs has the best consistency/texture, and is suitable for everything from turkey burgers, meatballs (although their meatball mix is also excellent) and for taco meat. Great prices for being all-natural, no antibiotics used (grass fed?) The only thing I don't buy there is sausage (go to the Lancaster county butcher for that) and flank steak (use Martin's Meats). They take cards, but have a $10 minimum.

Yelp
Fam is loving the meats, tender, flavorful, n juicy! Sunday was my first time buying their meats, n although I am a vegetarian, I am happy my fam likes this grass fed, hormone free meat. It cost more than the grocery store, but if I ate meat, this is the kind I wud wanna eat, not the doped up birds n cows in the grocery stores!!! Gonna try to buy meat from here as much as I can unless I find a comparable source closer to home in NJ.

AB L.

Yelp
Really nice selection of meats at fair prices. Picked up a 3lb tomahawk - it was fantastic! That said, still 5 stars, but do keep in mind the company name is not an indication of these being Pre meats. They are Choice...

Yelp
I come here for all my beef. I started coming here because they had dry age, and started buying primals. Rob is great, great customer service, great meat, excited to see how the turkeys turn out for thanksgiving.

Yelp
Overall I am very pleased with the quality, variety and customer service. We are never rushed and treated with courtesy. The value for what you get is reasonable and everything is ALWAYS fresh. I have doubt that if there were any problems they would make it right so you have nothing to lose by trying it and if you're like us everything to gain. I was just sick to death of the same old thing at Trader Joe's and the ShopRite so we decided to give this a try. Since then we've been back weekly and have managed to get restaurant quality meats at reasonable prices. Among the things we buy are party wings, chicken drumsticks (perfect for packed lunches), ground beef, beef for curry/stews and pork cutlets (boneless). We could not be more pleased. Thank you!

Yelp
My mother is a steak lover and picky. I went to Giunta's for the first time in the summer and she enjoyed it. I will always come here to purchase them for her.
google avatar

Geoff B.

Yelp
Definitely the best butcher in Reading Terminal Market. Best butcher I've found in Philly so far. Yes, prices are slightly higher than supermarkets, but the quality is even greater. Only problem is location is a bit far everyday shopping. However, for special meals it's a no brainer to head to Giunta's. Definitely worth it.

Yelp
I was so excited to see a sign that said organic meat. It is very hard to find fresh organic meat that is not frozen. But once I looked at the prices and the color, I knew the sign had to be a lie, and it was. I took my number and waited in line anyway to find out more. When my turn came I asked which of their meat was organic. They guy waiting on me said none of it is organic. He also said it is all finished with corn or grains at the end of the animal's life. Why non organic and grain fed? He said they do that so that it is cheaper to raise and to sell and so their growers don't have to go through organic certification. Then he explained how that saves me money. I'm not interested in buying cheap meat. I am interested in buying quality organic and grass-fed meat. It usually costs much more and I am willing to pay for it. I really angers me that their sign is misleading, false advertising. I'm sure the USDA would not appreciate their false claims either. Either sell organic meat or don't but don't use it as false advertising to draw in more business. Hopefully those who are looking for organic meat will be able to tell the difference upon first sight as I did.

Yelp
Ok, Giunta's might be mad at me for this. There chicken is not as fresh as you might think it is. I came one day to buy some whole chickens from them, and they brought out a whole bunch prewrapped in plastic from another company - WHAT???!? I always thought there meat was a little more expensive, but worth it bc I thought it was local and from their farms, or a small farmer, or...I don't know what I was thinking, but needless to say, I don't come here that often for meat any more. I still go once in awhile, when I'm crunched for time, and it's on my way home from work, but my fairytale bubble of nicely raised chickens on a mom and pop farm was popped.
google avatar

Hannah K.

Yelp
The guy who seems to be in charge, the older man cracks me up. The blatant racism or disregard for other cultures is very apparent in his demeanor. I went up to the counter, and there's one other girl, a very pretty white girl. He is beyond friendly, nice, called her hun, and etc. Another white woman walks up after me, and then he starts to help her, even after seeing that she came after me. The woman goes, "oh she was here first". He then begrudgingly decides to help me, and barely speaks a word, and has a conversation with the woman who came after me. When the transaction comes to a close, he goes, "debit or credit", and I say "debit". He then ignores my request and runs it by credit anyways. Dude, it's 2014, your racism is a little outdated at this point. Maybe you were just born ignorant but I'm guessing a majority of your customers are not white. After only going here to get meat, I will never spend my money here again.
google avatar

Holly Q.

Yelp
Great great meats here - everything you could want across the beef, veal, lamb, poultry, pork spectrum. They even have some great bones around for making stock at home. And their 'family specials' are absolute recession proof steals!
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
I've gotten meat from here a few times and the service has always been great. They're helpful, knowledgeable and as far as I can tell pretty reasonably priced. Great hanger steaks for $6.99/lb and boneless pork loin for $4/lb. Asked the woman ringing me up if anyone in the market sold chicken stock and I let her talk me into buying chicken bones from her to make my own. It's still simmering on the stove so the jury is out on whether or not it'll be any good but if you ever need chicken bones they're $1/lb. I've spent $2 on far less useful pursuits. Located across from Iovine Bros. Produce on the Filbert St side.

Nicholas S.

Yelp
I'm going to be honest. I only ever get chicken from here because currently I live in an apartment with an electric stove and no oven, so cooking other meats doesn't work out too well... The service is always great. Very quick. Once they rounded down the 3 cents I owed to the dollar before that and told me to keep the extra dollar. I'm not a cheapskate who needs to save 3 whole cents, but I applaud businesses that do this because it shows they are not greedy. The chicken breasts are a lot bigger (meaning more expensive) than the other place in RTM I got them from. They always end up being around a pound each (the other place I go to is half the size). Recently, I started using the boneless, skinless thighs because they end up being cheaper. I got the "party wings" from here once, and they turned out so well! There are a few "ready to cook" meats that are already seasoned like a breaded chicken filet and a stuffed steak (I forget what exact cut it was, but I'm pretty sure it was skirt steak or one of the cheaper steaks). The beef bacon looks pretty good and less fatty than this other place in RTM I got beef bacon from before (though I did not purchase it from Giunta's). I'll upgrade this to a 5 star rating as soon as I try the other butchers in RTM (as long as Giunta's is really "as good as it gets!," what Yelp says when you rate a business 5 stars). Pro Tip: pair your meats from here with sauces from Condiment near the center/dining area of RTM (no, I don't work for them. That's just what I've been doing, and it always turns out great).
google avatar

Karen F.

Yelp
This is a GREAT place to buy beef. (For chicken I like Harry Ochs - also on the Market). The steaks are gorgeous - and you certainly pay for that care & expertise. The butcher will custom cut and package the meat for you (which is great for our small family.) I love to shop at RTM and Giunta's is a welcome addition (or mainstay - should say!). Nice selection of ground beef, pork & veal, too. Lovely looking veal chops - but alas, I could not afford them that day.
google avatar

Theresa A.

Yelp
Just about every other week I drive to Reading terminal Market just to get our meat at Giunta's. The service is second to none, the shop is clean and organized, but what really keeps us coming back is the QUALITY! From the house made sausage varieties (turkey, sage, chorizo, hot, mild, etc.) to the freshest cuts of beef, to the juiciest, most delicious chicken breast I've ever had--Giunta's is THE BEST. Everything is local, organic, and farm raised--all things important to my family. Anytime I eat meat from anywhere else I am disappointed. I will be a Giunta's customer for life!!!!!
google avatar

Jayel S.

Yelp
Excellent selection of high quality meats! We picked up a ny strip, delmonico, and a few broccoli mozzarella sausages. Everything was delicious, even after a day in our hotel fridge and a 4 hour drive back home to NY. Will definitely be coming back here whenever we are in town!
google avatar

Sara L.

Yelp
Giunta's has become my "go-to" butcher shop in Reading Terminal, and I have never been disappointed by the quality of anything I have purchased. Their prices are in line with other butchers in the market and, if you have a place to store it, their family pack specials are a great value. The customer service is fantastic, if sometimes a little disorganized due to volume or people lining up to ogle the cuts of meat. They are experts at what they do and will happily trim or prepare a cut to your request. They have butterflied out a rib rack of pork, and expertly frenched a crown lamb roast for me. Once it is "your turn" in line, you are treated like a valued customer and never hurried along, even if you are just buying chicken thighs. The shop is family-run and sometimes I half expect an angry Italian grandpa to wander out of the back and yell "Meat comes first!" as in the film Kicking and Screaming.

Yelp
Guinta's Prime Shop live up to their name they are a prime meat shop in Reading Terminal. This is the best place to buy your meats. They can be on a little pricey side but it is well worth it. After a few visits I realized that their meats are organic. I have taken trips to Guinta and stocked my freezer with meats. Even after I froze them the meats still taste excellent. The staff is very multicultural which is cool and they cater to your every night no matter if you spending cash money or food assistance. I have been in both instances and I was treated no differently. One time a clerk charged me twice on my credit card and I called Guinta soon as I got back to work and they refunded my money by the end of the business day. They were very helpful and gave me no issues. Service is always quick no matter if there are a couple people waiting around to be serviced. You can get 5 lbs of chicken wings at Guinta's for around $11. If you split this up you can have alot of chicken wings you just might start clucking (lol) Come here you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Before I was a meat eater, I started buying my boyfriend tenderloin steaks here since that's kind of like buying your girlfriend roses. He has been telling me ever since that they are better than any steak he's eaten at any restaurant. Is it more expensive than the 3.5 ounce steaks you can get at the dollar store for $1.00? Yes. So if you're brave enough to try those, save the money. I'm willing to pay for quality. Even before he found out they're grass fed, hormone free, rather pricey steaks, he was saying they are the best he's ever had. I've also bought ribs here that came out super good. Aside from the expensive (but, according to everyone I've fed one of these steaks to, worth the cost) filets, their stuff is priced pretty similarly to Trader Joe's.
google avatar

Ronna B.

Yelp
My go-to place for meat and poultry. Just a great assortment of fresh, high-quality meats at some of the most affordable prices in the city. Service is efficient, too.
google avatar

Hans S.

Yelp
This is a great place to buy meats. They have a wide selection of cuts of beef, pork, lamb, and poultry and have an array of sausages to choose from. Prices are pretty good (for the city), a bit less than Whole Foods or TJ's for stuff that is better quality. They are busy, so their stuff is fresh. They can get you "special order" things if you ask. We got a prime rib roast from them last month that was gorgeous. The owner Charles will give you cooking advice if you want it, but isn't pushy either. Plus, they take LevelUp and give you $10 for every $100 you spend. Pro tip: they don't use the "take a number" system unless it is really busy.
google avatar

Lorraine M.

Yelp
I have purchased a prime rib roast, and multiple steaks from here. The workers are SUPER friendly and always help me make a decision. They don't try to push more on you either which I appreciate! If you're buying big pieces of meat be prepared to spend a bit, but the quality is worth it!
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
I frequent this business weekly and it is a GREAT butcher/meat market. Always helpful and friendly. Outstanding cuts of meat with a EXCELLENT selection. They'll trim or custom cut to your specification. Favorite meat stand at the terminal.
google avatar

Kaitlin L.

Yelp
After staking out this place (pun completely intended) for a while, I finally made my first purchase at Giunta's Prime Shop-- beef tenderloin steaks. The selection is fantastic and it lives up to its name of having "prime" quality meats. The employees are very helpful and are willing to customize your cut to whatever size you need. Now I'm no meat connoisseur, but they seem to have every cut of meat I can fathom. Their location is also ideal, right next to my trusty produce vendor, Iovine Brothers. I'm not going to pretend that Giunta's is a steal price-wise, but there are certain things I'm willing to pay a bit more for, and Guinta's fits the bill.
google avatar

Vernon D.

Yelp
This delightful palace of carnage is properly priced and has the friendliest customer service of any meat monger in The Terminal. Always my stop for bacon, ham hocks, lamb, and just about everything except liver.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
There are plenty of places in the Redding Terminal Market to get meats. But if you want the very best, at fantastic prices for the quality, go to Giunta's. The folks here are terrific, the product is fresh and superb! I have NEVER been disappointed, except that I can't buy meat anywhere else anymore!
google avatar

Douglas A.

Yelp
Good place but maybe not the freshest meats. I was there on a Monday and the pork looked a little tired. Great overall selection veal to pork to beef. I don't think they have any particular distinction other than it was very well stocked. Service was quick and attentive too.

A R.

Yelp
I have never been so disappointed as I am with the duck I purchased earlier today. While I realize the buyer should beware, I received $23.00 worth of duck in a clear bag; the bag had a terrible odor when opened. When I went to wash off the duck, I realized there was no cavity and the entrails were still inside. What a waste of money. Since this is the 21st century, I did not believe poultry would be sold in this manner-especially without a warning. I will not be back.
google avatar

Kenneth W.

Yelp
Great fresh product, excellent service. What more can be said except if they don't have what you're looking for, they'll try to get it for you!
google avatar

Jonny R.

Yelp
There are better options in the market, I think. I do like Giunta's and is usually my first stop for meat, but they don't always have what I need and something aren't willing to cut it to the right sizes. (I wanted two pounds of chuck recently, and the butcher said he could only do 4 pounds?) Try Martin's.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
I can only agree with the other reviewers in saying that this is the best meat shop/butcher in Reading Terminal Market, and probably the best in the city. The customer service is terrific, the products that they sell are excellent, and their prices are the fairest around.
google avatar

Imran N.

Yelp
Go for the jerky. There's a great selection of meats - but the jerky specifically, and all the flavours - great. Oh and feel free to sample!
google avatar

Jason H.

Yelp
I'm updating my review based upon my most recent experience at Giunta's. I purchased some bone-in pork chops on Saturday, March 29th around noon. I went to brine them Tuesday, April 1st to find they were rotten and smelled horrible. Pork doesn't last forever, but it should have a greater fridge life than 2.5 or so days. I haven't yet contacted the owner, but will do so. This is the second time in my patronage of Guinta's that I've gotten rotten meat. The first time was about 18 months ago, and noted in my first review, and was a similar problem with some cryovac lamb chops.
