It’s a Murky Future for Street Food Vendors in Chicago - Eater Chicago

"Give Me Some Sugah has been around since 2008. Owner Lenore Lindsey would dote on a pair of customers — a couple — joking they were eating too much. She developed a relationship with Vamarr Hunter, one of the customers. They were introduced 14 years ago. Only recently did Lindsey discover that Hunter was the son she gave up for adoption when she was 17. As Lindsey faced health troubles, in April, Hunter took over operations at the bakery." - Ashok Selvam

Chicago’s best cookies | Eater Chicago

"This South Shore bakery specializes in the elusive potato chip cookie, a delicious combination of sweet and salty and crispy, but it offers a selection of other flavors, including the classics like oatmeal and chocolate chip, and wild cards like peanut butter chocolate chip and lemon sandwich." - Naomi Waxman

Google
Ironically, i stumbled upon this bakery while I was out for a run. It looked too good to ignore and it did not disappoint. Inside, I found cookies, cupcakes, and pot pies. I brought home a chocolate chunk cookie + a peanut butter chocolate cookie and a chocolate cupcake. All were delicious and so reasonably priced. Additionally, while I did my bakery shopping, I was greeted by two friendly and welcoming women. I recommend this place if you’re looking for a treat!

Google
Never lets me down. In fact, I had to move further away so my waist line would stop expanding. Lol Great treats. Great peeps. Do yourself a favor and get their quicky. Thank me later!

Seen you on the tv !!! Sending you lots of love and prayers from Canada 🇨🇦 I hope one day to try these goodies. What a blessed story God is SOO GOOD and intentional! Amen!!!! Speedy recovery Dear🤗🙌🏾

Google
Just saw your story on the Today show. A story so touching about the love of a mother and son and God’s faithfulness. It’s unfortunate that I’ve been in Chicago for 6 weeks (originally from Connecticut), and leaving tomorrow Saturday. Would have loved to try the cookies and Lamar’s famous pound cakes! But I’ll try it when I’m ever back in Chicago. All the best with your journey, business & health Ms. Lenore. ❤️🙏🏾

Google
I had the chicken pot pie and key lime pie, both were fantastic. The chicken pot pie far exceeded my expectations, man was that good. The key line pie was perfectly flavored, so darn good.

Google
Just watched your spotlight on NBC Nightly News and it was so very uplifting! I’ll keep you in my thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery Lenore. I work in the loop and normally take the train from the western suburbs but I’ll be driving on January 14th when you reopen so I can make a trip down to buy some sweets!!! Everyone knows there are no calories in cookies that are baked with love!

Google
I stumbled upon this bakery while leaving an event and I’m so happy I did. The food looked so good from the outside that I had to get a closer look. I ended up getting a cookie because I wasn’t exactly sure what to get. I had this cookie in my backpack all day, and when I decided to eat it, it was so moist and delicious. I was shocked. I will be back for more and I’m hoping to try the banana pudding!

Google
Did I just watch you on the 700pm News here in Washington, D.C.? I saw your bakery is in Chicago , so I Googled it! Your story is amazing. I hope your mother will recover so you two can work alongside one another. One day I will visit Chicago; I hear they have Wind, a big lake, and a mother- and- son bakery.👩‍👦

Yelp
I tried the lemon pound cake and key lime pie. Both were delicious. The pound cake was moist and flavorful. The key lime was lite with a mild key lime flavor. I can't wait to try more.

Yelp
Stopped by after visiting several Open House Chicago stops in Chatham/South Shore. Prices are higher than average because the goods are better than average. Open late into the afternoon gives you the chance to pickup dessert for after dinner. Generous cake slices wrapped to go with minimal packaging (plastic wrap + bag) and cookie just with the bakery tissue dropped in. Chocolate chip walnut - generous sized and thick so that you get a little crisp and some soft fresh from the oven softness inside (not a cookie that snaps losing crumbs to your lap). If I lived closer, it'd be trouble. Got the coconut pineapple cake with cream cheese frosting. Saving it for after dinner.C

Yelp
Happened to find this place driving by.. What I got was so good. I got a chocolate chip cookie & à minature sweet potatoe pie. This was so delicious . I will diffently go back.

Yelp
I stopped in because I needed a great dessert for a small gathering. Vamaar was great at offering suggestions, and I decided on the lemon pound cake and cookie variety. These were a hit! While everything was delicious, I especially loved the potato chip cookie. If you are in need of moist, fresh, and delicious bakery items, please get to Give Me Some Sugah!

Yelp
Listen clearly, this is the absolute best bakery in chicago-period. First, the cakes are authentic and made with quality ingredients. The slices are huge which justifies a $5-6 price which I think is very reasonable. I tried the yellow cake with chocolate frosting and it was so good. A frequent customer came in and begged me to try to key lime bar and I did and I was glad I listened. It was rich, real Graham crust, and thick. This place will grow and should market more because most places carry that "Angelic's processed cake" here in chicago. I give this place 11 out of 10 stars! I just wish they stay open longer and that they open Monday through Wednesday. You will love this place! Love it!

Yelp
Stopped in while I was in the South Shore neighborhood and was pleasantly surprised. I had intended to have a proper sitdown but then front area was being renovated. I ordered takeaway instead. Thanks to recommendations from the cashier, I walked away with hits. Loved the potato soup. I don't know if there is buttermilk or sour cream in the cream but it definitely works. The jalapeno cornbread is good without tasting as if it had been prepared from Jiffy mix. I still have to try the sweet potato soup that I bought. The banana pudding deserves an award. What I had was very much like banana pudding I had when I lived in the south. Sorry banana pudding purists, but if you haven't had it from some grandma from down South, get you some and you'll understand my assessment. The key lime pie is pretty good while not erring on being tart. But the banana pudding. Once the renovation is done, I shall return for the proper sitdown. There are a few menu items that I would like to try so that I can blog about the cafe.

Yelp
I have continued to support this business and realized that my initial review did not address the product and wasn't fair. They make a great cookie. I've also tried the key lime pie, and several cupcakes. It's all delicious. They are always courteous when you come in and the prices are good.

Yelp
Omg this bakery is wonderful. Thanksgiving rush I forgot to order my sweets so in a panic I google black own bakery in area. I got there stood in line patiently line was fast. I go inside so much to choose from the woman at counter was awesome. I bought pound cake with lemon and sweet potato pie.. I cut the cake at work I couldn't wait for Thanksgiving hands down the best pound cake ever tasted with the exception of my grandmother. I will definitely be back wayyyy before the next holiday.

Yelp
I give up!!!! Purchased two slices of carmel cake, and thought I was real lucky because they were just wrapping them up...NOPE! Went to store to buy my milk, circled the block to find a parking space, and then upstairs to prepare my palate for a months desire, the long awaited, freshly and homemade carmel cake! Tears!!!! This cake is so dry and so overbaked, they had no reason in the world to sell this kind of disappointment! Don't Give Me Some Sugah, give me my money back!!!
google avatar

Rebecca B.

Yelp
I waited til the day before Thanksgiving to get dessert and for once, my procrastination paid off. I stopped by Give Me Some Sugah and got 2 of the 3 desserts not sold out - a pecan pie and a small bag of lime cookies. Turned out to be the most delicious pecan pie I had ever tasted and the some of the best cookies ever! I'm definitely going to have to return on a day when everything is not sold out! I can't wait to try all the other sweet things they sell!
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
Wow wow wow!!! My first time here I got the key lime pie. I can't even find words for it. Eating it was like entering into some kind of other dimension. Then I was having a meeting nearby for a tour with my company Chicago Detours and wanted to include some treats. I was very excited to use it as a way to try out the famed potato chip pecan cookies. OMG!!! The prices here are very reasonable and the quality is top notch.

Elle D.

Yelp
The ladies are so kind and the baked goods are delicious! My fav is the sweet potato pie. I have liked everything I've tasted!

Cyrea Z.

Yelp
Everything they sell here tastes heavenly!!! Do yourself a favor, try the scones, they are the BEST I've ever had! From sweet to savory, you cannot miss. Oh, and the lemon pound cake...I love this place! The owners is also the best. This place is a true neighborhood gem.
google avatar

Wendy Z.

Yelp
i have YET to have one thing that does not excel from here!!! i think the main standouts for me are the lemon pound cake (5 bucks for a HUGE SLICE that probably weighs over a pound but still has a super satisfying tender crumb and refreshing lemon flavor without being too cloying) and the potato chip cookie (very nice mix of salty and sweet!!!) def my go to bakery in the south shore area, and you're sure to be in for a treat any time you stop by!!
google avatar

Shantel B.

Yelp
My favs are the carmel cake, the cream cheese brownie, and the lime parfait. I would give it 4 stars, but I bought a discounted piece of cake one day that shouldn't have been sold. Other than that, 90% of my purchases have been great.
google avatar

Niilye B.

Yelp
One of the best black owned business that has the best tasting chocolate chip, butter cookie, and chocolate chip and walnut cookies I've ever tasted. The crisp on the edges and the softness of the inside is just right. When you walk in you are instantly welcomed by a friendly face. It's a small but homey styled shop that makes you feel right at home. The size of the cookies are about the size of an adult hand and are filling and affordable. Spent 9 dollars and it lasted me about 4 mornings

Yelp
I was in the South Shore neighborhood & needed a hearty meal. Stumbled upon Give Me Some Sugah Cafe & I must say that I was truly impressed. Since the weather was cold & rainy I had to try the Turkey Chili which came with the jalapeño cornbread muffins. The chili was very flavorful even had a little spice to it (I'm a sucker for spicy chili) & the jalapeño cornbread muffins had the light airy texture of a biscuit but the wholesome goodness of cornbread. All I can say is LOVED IT! Just b/c the young lady recommended the quiche special, I tried it. Citing that I like quiche but it seems to be a hit or miss dish. She smiled & stated I would love this b/c it's homemade. The results....they nailed it! The quiche was so succulent & again flavorful. Now it was a tad bit pricey but it was well worth it! I can't wait to stop in again!

Yelp
The products are always fresh and quite tasty. I love the friendly atmosphere and smiles every time I visit.

Yelp
Yummy is the first word that comes to mind when I think of this place! I'm so lucky to have it in my neighborhood although I haven't visited as much as I would like...I keep saying bad Tonya bad, so I have made up in my mind I will be back more often! The place is clean and the staff "Amazing" Red Velvet is my guilty pleasure when I come here! If you know "Red" you know everyone can't do it justice! Well they do! I have heard by many other people that many of their cakes are so good that it will make you forget your diet! They also serve cookies and pies and I haven't tried them yet but I will! I pinky swear I will be back!
google avatar

Calla R.

Yelp
Sad I gave it such a low rating but the service I received today was way subpar and the cake I had was very dry. The clerk seemed as if we were invading her space
google avatar

Virgil W.

Yelp
I love these ladies. I see them just about every Saturday for my breakfast special.. they are always very friendly and accommodating. The potato chip cookie and pecan pie, are to die for. If you're ever in south shore. You have to stop in and visit.
google avatar

Yelp
Lyle cozy place that feels like your grandmas kitchen. I had the sweet potato pie and the peach cobbler both excellent. My husband got a bean salad but I didn't try it. Looked good though. The owner was very kind and knowledgeable about her food. Which she should be. I was happy to spend my money here.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place. I had a business meeting here and tried the blueberry scone. Very tasty!

Yelp
Fast service with a smile and so courteous! Got the chocolate cupcake with chocolate frostingomg this so moist, and the frosting is so rich! This will be my go to local place for my sugar fixes for chocolate & anything sugary!
google avatar

Yelp
I love this bakery! My mother gets the banana pudding a couple of times a week. The owner is so sweet that she will put one a side to ensure that she gets one. Great food and great atmosphere.

Yelp
Counters weren't as clean as I thought they should be for bakery (side eye) but the owner was there really sweet enjoyed the cookies thanks again

Yelp
Awesome. I had been trying to hit this place ever since the grand opening was announced on yelp; I missed it that day, and had a habit of coming by whenever they closed (Monday and Sunday) . Since it's practically right next to my house, I had to stop by - I try really hard to support local businesses in South Shore. The chocolate cake is amazing - you can really tell they cut no corners. Everything is made from scratch, and the price is right. If you've got a real sweet tooth and you're looking for something really rich, though, I don't think it's a good bet. For people like me, who like sweets but get headaches if they eat really rich stuff, the chocolate cake is perfect. The cake itself is a little dry, but the strong chocolate taste in the icing made it worth it - and I'm usually one who leaves her icing. And their cookies just melt in your mouth - really amazing. The price is right, too: $3 for the mini chocolates cakes, and $4 for the german chocolate ones. I plan to be back to try their red velvet cake.

Yelp
So... I am a firm believer of frequenting the local businesses in my neighbor, especially the businesses that are black owned. But I have been deeply dissatisfied with the pastries from this place. When they first opened, I was excited to have a dessert shop so near home. They so let me down. Their desserts aren't horrible, but nothing to scream about either. Personal opinion, they rate low on my dessert todium pole. It's so unfortunate. I've given them several opportunities to change my mind but they have failed each time. I have tried each of their limited selection of 'treats' and have not been impressed. I continued to go here hoping for improvement but that has never been the case. The brownies: dry and nothing special; the cupcakes: large and no matter what kind you get, they taste the same. Matter of fact, everything in this place taste the exact same - just blah (certainly not gross). The customer service is subpar. They never have anything ready and you would think with only having about six items, they would keep the shelves filled, but that is never the case. Positives: the place is always clean and the knick knacks are... Cute (u guess). It really had a 'Color Purple' feel to it. The owner seems nice and very hard working, hence the reason for my frequency. But at this point, I'm done. I may on occasion, go in for a beverage because I would like her to stay in business, but I will continue to go else where for my sweet tooth.

Chella G.

Yelp
I had the fortune of meeting the owner through a co-worker and she invited me to the bakery. She knew that I was interested in baking and made some amazing suggestions. The bakery is decorated very simply, but don't let that scare you away. Everything I tried was obviously made from scratch--real butter, real lemons, real eggs. You will not find that disgusting "icing" that comes in a bucket. The boyfriend and I bought lime cookies, a lemon bar and a red velvet cupcake. I think he might have only eaten about 4 cookies because I took everything else! Oops. Everything was delicious and I will be back, even though it's nowhere near my house! The only thing that I would suggest is offering coffee, lemonade, or bottled water to accompany the treats. Give Me Some Sugah is a wonderful addition to South Shore!
google avatar

Lenora C.

Yelp
The first time that i went into this bakery, the smells overwhelmed me.. It was such a good aroma coming from the back that I just had to buy something.. I started to look at the prices and they seemed pretty reasonable.. I wanted something sweet and boy was I in for a treat. Ice cream, cookies, cakes galore... I bought two red velvet w/ cream cheese cakes, 2 key lime bars, a pecan brownie, and some peanut butter and butter cookies. As you can tell I racked up on sweets for a week or two. I highly suggest new comers to try it out!
google avatar

Judith J.

Yelp
I was so happy to find a bakery in my neighborhood finally. But was disappointed with my purchases. The key lime bar is very good. The carmel and red velvet cupcakes were not horrible but definitely not good. I will not purchase those again. I do my best to suppose local and small business and will go back for the key lime bar. I know they opened an additional seating area to serve sandwiches and will go back and give them another opportunity.

Yelp
My friend Camillia took me to this place. Aye, remember that song: That's What Friends Are For. Forget about the times she's loaned me money, never mind the transportation costs she covered while I was away in undergrad, don't even consider the time she saved my life--all of that ashens and pales in comparison to introducing me to Give Me Some Sugah. The rich and uncomplicated strawberry cheesecakes--are fresh. The savory potato chip cookies--are innovative. The silky and flavorful red velvet cupcakes--are pure cream cheese brilliance. Give Me Some Sugah is a fresh, innovative, brilliant bakery. It is a pound of pleasure in a layer of love with a dozen cherries on top for all the muffin babies of the world.

Yelp
My aunt works at the travel agency next to this place, and she and all her little old lady travel agent friends have been singing its praises since it's opened. And when the little old ladies speak, I listen. But for some reason, I've not had the chance or opportunity to go in. Finally, a couple of Saturdays my daughter and I decided to stop in after her ballet classes. Unfortunately I wasn't all that impressed. Maybe I just got the wrong thing. I got a caramel cake which was just ok. Nothing more nothing less. I think I'm spoiled by the caramel at Brown Sugar bakery, but I just couldn't get into the cupcake I had. And neither could my three-year-old. This cupcake tasted more like toffee. Not so great (sorry). On a lighter note, my aunt said that I might just not have liked my cupcake, but I would love some of the other stuff on the menu, so we'll be back on Saturday. I really want to like you, Give Me Some Sugah. I really do. Because I know the travel agents would never steer me wrong. So let's just say that the last visit was on me, and next time we'll have a different experience.

Yelp
Mmm...lemon bars... Theirs are by far the BEST I've ever tasted. You know how it is when you take a bite of something and you can't think of anything else but the deliciousness in your mouth? Yeah. Also a big fan of their potato chip cookies - very light and buttery. They must lose a star based on their cupcakes, however. The frosting is absolutely amazing (on the pineapple coconut cream cheese & red velvet cupcakes), but the cake itself lacks that fluffy factor (I'll admit it, I've been spoiled by Sprinkles).
google avatar

Aaron S.

Yelp
I could not believe that the cookies were this good. The key lime pie is the best I've had!!

kathy G.

Yelp
This bakery can easily be missed but definitely a gem. They don't carry a ton of bakery items but I basically go for their cookies. They are excellent. Not overly sweet, crisp and moist ( sounds like an oxymoron) but it's the perfect combo. Not too soft, not too crisp-juuuuust right. The chocolate chip & walnut or pecan ( can't remember which nut) cookies, and potato chip cookies are my favorite. My husband loves the oatmeal, I also like the lemon bars-all very good. It gets a bit frustrating as they do run out of some of my favorites from time to time, but I guess this happens at most bakeries. Best to call in advance and place an order. I also tried a pineapple cake with cream cheese frosting-oh my gosh-delish!! Happy I don't live nearby or I would be as big as a house. This is definitely one of my stops when I come into the city. The staff is always friendly. They also sell soups and I think some lunch items. I've never had their food, so can't rate it.

Yelp
I honestly do not know how I found out about this bakery, but I am glad that I did! This bakery is close to me and for this reason, I must be biased and give an extra star for proximity (I find myself driving 30 minutes to the nearest decent bakery, so can you blame me?). So when I found out where this bakery was located, I jumped into my car and endured a refreshing two minutes of traffic to get there. I arrived near the closing time, so I did not try any cafe or savory items. However, that does not matter because I came for the sweets. I bought a bunch or stuff and here's what I thought: Pineapple Cupcake: Meh (Seriously I couldn't think of any other words to add to this) Vanilla Buttercreme Cupcake: The frosting was delish, but the cake was surprisingly dry. Key Lime Pie: Now here's where the magic happens, the key lime pie was amazing! Nice balance of limey flavor, sweet, and tartness! I devoured the crust! And it was reasonably priced. Pineapple Upside Down Cake: Om Nom! It was so good, I saved my last half for the next day and discovered my mom sneaking it to her room for "safekeeping." Maybe I caught the cupcakes on a bad day, but who cares? Every bakery has cupcakes. Come here for the Key Lime Pie and the Pineapple Upside Down Cake. The end.

Yelp
Went here today. Got potato chip and chocolate chip cookies, lemon bar and a small banana pudding. Cute shop, vintage oven with chairs and tables. Owner served us. The potato chip and chocolate chip cookies are delicious. Banana pudding was tasty but a little too mushy. The lemon bar was also tasty but the crust/bar part of it was a little to hard cookie like vs it being soft/smooth like I've had it at other places. But the owner said it's best to come on Tuesdays so I'll do that next time.
google avatar

Yelp
Okay, since I'm expecting my first child, I have been watching my weight. However, I'm ordering cookies from here for my baby shower favors. So when I stopped in to place the order, you know I had to get a few sweet treats. I got my usual oatmeal cookies, always a favorite. I also wanted a lemon bar, but they weren't available. However, Miss Lenore did have lime bars, and of course I tried one. OMG, this thing is a religious experience! The graham crust so buttery that you don't have to chew, it just dissolves in your mouth. The lime is perfectly sweet and tart. As I type this, I'm licking my fingers because it's that good. I sliced a SMALL piece for my buddy at work to taste. His reaction? "GOOD GOD, this is good!" All I have to say to the guests attending the shower is 'YOU'RE WELCOME!"
google avatar

Natalie M.

Yelp
Best bakery on the South Side! All of their baked goods are homemade, NO corners cut what so ever. Often I have heard customers complain about the price(as in $4 for a lg lemon square) but that is because the owner/head baker uses REAL lemons, not lemon extract or some chemical sustitution. They have the traditional American favorites, such as chocolate chip cookies, brownies etc, but they are always adding new things to the menu. Special orders are most welcome with at least 48hrs notice. The only thing is that I wished they had the knowledge/skill for cake decorating, because it is really hard to find someone that is good at BOTH baking and decorating of speciality cakes.
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
Great pastries only will rarely find your favorites as the selection changes often. Calling ahead is a must if you are craving something specific
google avatar

Mallorie G.

Yelp
Caramel cupcake - 2/5 Red velvet cupcake - 4/5 Chocolate on chocolate cupcake 3/5 Potato chip cookie (seems unfair to rate because it really wasn't my cup of tea.) Will I go back? On if I'm in the area, and chances of that are low. Overall experience, 3/5
google avatar

Willa M.

Yelp
I give this neighborhood bakery five stars. The baked goods are always delicious is the customer friendly place.only problem that I have is waiting in the long line for service. Because they are that good

Yelp
I love the bakery. German chocolate cake is off the chain. Try it, I promise you will love it too. :-)

Yelp
I had a mini lemon pound cake with lemon buttercream frosting. This is the real deal, folks. Nothiing "light" about it. Yum. I ate about 1/4 and took the rest home. I hope to try a different goody every time I go in. Why no fifth star? Something in there made my eyes sting and my nose run. And no coffee, only (very special) herbal teas. I will consider this place carry out only for me, not sit down. The decor is very pleasant and it would be a lovely spot to sit a while if not for the eye burning thing.

Yelp
This is a great place for a relaxed breakfast. We both ordered the pancake special (2 pancakes, 2 turkey sausage patties, and 2 eggs). Perfect portions, nice light fluffy/spongy and great flavor to the pancakes. We also got the hot peaches for the pancakes (I suspect this is the same thing used for the filling of their cobbler...which if it is, their cobbler will be amazing!!!) They make their own sausage patties. Yum! After breakfast, we stopped by the bakery counter and got some brownies for later in the day. We will definitely go back to this place...its a neighborhood gem!

Yelp
This is my favorite bakery. It makes deserts that are soo.... GOOD. The prices are fair for the love I taste in the deserts. My family from around the country enjoy the deserts also. Enjoy,

Yelp
My favorite comfort food is Chicken pot pie, This bakery makes the BEST I've ever had. Everything here is homemade in the kitchen that is visible to the customers. Its so family oriented and cozy. Its like the perfect "neighborhood spot" needed in this area! The cookies are also AMAZING.

Yelp
Today I had plans to take my sister in law to gimme some sugar for brunch. I don't live in the area but the pastries and food are really good. I'm all for supporting small businesses especially black owned so when I have time on my off days I'll stop buy and pick up enough to last for a while. Anyway we came by the store around 10am, the door was open so we walked in. A few seconds later the owner/cook said that they were closed. I asked what time do you open? Some random guy said 11am. I said ok we'll be back in an hour. They seemed irritated but we looked past their lack of customer service and waited in the car until 11am. 11am came and we proceeded to go in but the bakery appeared to be closed. We walked towards the other side where food is served and there was the same guy sitting at a table with food and the owner arranging the table. He looked up and I mouthed to him through the window are you open and he said no. Wtf?! Now I understand if there is some type of private event going on but why wouldn't you tell us that the first time we stopped in? Advice to the owner..Good customer service goes a long way these day. Your customers are the reason why you stay in business. Treat each one with respect and they'll continue to come back and maybe tell their friends.
