"Recreation is a restaurant, bar, and lounge right across from The Grackle on East 6th Street. The menu hits most of the classics you expect at a place that always has sports on the TV—fried chicken sandwiches, wings, burgers, and carnitas tacos—plus a few crudos and ceviches to help combat the summer sun. It’s open for lunch and dinner six days a week (but closed on Mondays).  " - nicolai mccrary

I enjoy going here every year for the thanksgiving & Christmas holiday events! Those are great to go to especially if you have kiddos in tow!

Yelp
I come here for the kids judo program on Saturday mornings. Sometimes my husband plays basketball at that time. They are currently fixing up their basketball court, so I am sure that will be a huge plus. I don't really do a whole lot of other stuff here, but they are always advertising community events and hosting community events. If you are near the center, then I am sure you have seen or heard about everything they try to do for local citizens. But definitely try out judo with Kokoro Judo and try out their programs for kids and adults. You won't regret it!

Yelp
Great park! It's changed a lot over the years. The tennis court use to be my favorite place to skate. Great times with friends and Fam. I never thought they would upgrade the tennis court. Now it's not the same with a soccer half and textured floor. As if there wasn't enough field around the park to play soccer there. What a waste of park funding.

Yelp
On Saturday, I experienced a small miracle: There was toilet paper in a portapotty in a public park. I know, i know, you probably don't believe it but it's true. It set the mood for the day and we had a fabulous time romping in this park that didn't even know existed. It's just east of Airport on 12th street and the thing has whatever you might want in a park: basketball courts, tennis courts, a baseball, kickball diamond, a creek, picnic benches, big shady trees and a pool. Although I think the pool is sans agua so don't count on that being an option. We brought a big cooler, some ipod speakers and just lazed about, marveling at how secluded the park felt with the dappled sunlight and springy fresh grass. It wasn't crowded at all, especially considering it was a gorgeous Saturday afternoon when Zilker probably resembles a zoo more than a park. A great place to take a date and a picnic, a book and a blanket, or simply have some time with your family. For free. Imagine!

Yelp
My son takes a judo class at Givens in the evenings and on weekends. I have been so impressed with the staff there. They are always friendly, helpful and professional. The facilities are what you would expect if a community center-- not glamorous but adequate. When the pool was functional that was an absolute DREAM and I can't wait for it to be fixed! All things considered we love Givens and feel so fortunate to have access to this facility. I do wish Austin would put more money in the budget to update these facilities but that is no reflection of the staff who do their best.

Yelp
Great place to play basketball, great resource for the community. I've played basketball there several times and never paid a fee. While this doesn't seem like a sustainable model, it means neighborhood kids have a safe, free place to hoop.

Yelp
Givens is a park and recreation center that has been around for a very long time. I have gone there for several years now, and in the beggining I was not too impressed. After a few years though, they have really begin to clean up the area and improve the facilites. They have baseball and T Ball summer leagues, and there has been some significant diversification of the people that go there. I have been particulary impressed with the improvement of the parks. I will likely go there again, and would recommend if you live on the east side of Austin, that you go check it out. It's close to downtown, and pretty easy to get to.
