Cutting Food Stamps Isn’t Just Cruel, It’s Also Bad Economic Policy | Eater

"The food bank's president warned that the proposed SNAP and Medicaid cuts would be a “needless, self-inflicted humanitarian and economic disaster for Indiana and the country,” arguing that reduced federal assistance and stricter enrollment could severely harm vulnerable residents and put significant strain on local food assistance networks and the broader state economy." - Amy McCarthy

This place barely gave my family anything at all, and we are having a hard time with getting food and other stuff, also something I failed to note to why this is edited you have to show them your state ID, you also have to give them your first and last name plus personal phone number, to receive a message before you can go through.

Google
Very sweet individuals who volunteer in all weather conditions to load food into your vehicle as you drive thru two or three stations in their building. It can be a bit of a wait some days because lots of people are in need of help but it moves, you just to have something you can listen to or do for a little bit in the vehicle and you will be fine. I don't mind the wait, it lets me catch up on emails, phone calls, paper work, or a quick video. You don't have to show i.d. or carry anything so it is so helpful and convenient. As for the items, they try to provide balanced items of meat, fresh vegetables and/ or fruit, milk or something dairy, and some type of bread and dessert. It is a much needed service and they don't make you feel bad for going to get the help. 10/10 thank you!

Google
Y'all do great helping those in need. And understand you also donate to pantries in the area. It would be great if you could do something about the $50,000 + vehicles that are in line at pantries...or the folks smoking cigs that cost them 50-100 bucks a week. While volunteering , helped a lady load food into her Escalade while she told me they did not really need this food but it helped feed the people that took care of their race cars. Really ?? I don't have the answer but there has got to be a way to make the rules stricter. Too many people in line that do not belong there.

Google
Have your apt number handy. If so quick to unload, excellent best dock ever. Some parking next door or in entrance way, no gate till you got the back.

Google
Good people, fast loading depending on how many trucks , check in around the building at door #37 and make sure you choke your trailer, once the done loading/unloading they will bring paper to you

Google
Despite the long Queues of vehicles coming in for service this establishment of volunteer workers make it such a joy for their organised dispensing of foodstuffs to motorists:the staff cheerfulness and politeness makes me want to get back there to see how they cheer the needy yet they supplying basics needed by households

Google
Went to pick up food for some seniors in my community. This location is run like a well oiled machine!! In and out in 15 minutes. Picture is just some of the items received in multiples. Also had meat selections.

Laura Salas

Google
Staff was rude and made me wait in line for 10 minutes , because according to them “I cut the line” when no one indicated which line to follow , after I explained I was with a client to be served they opened the line, before that they ignored me and left me waiting for 10 minutes while passing all the cars behind me. If they just indicate which line to follow that wouldn’t be an issue, “punishing” the people in line is completely discriminatory and disrespectful.

Yelp
While, I appreciate Gleaners efforts to help. My first experience has been dulling by the lack of items that I can use to add into or create meals.

Yelp
Do you deliver!? 1010 North Maple Street Rushville IN . 46173 Need food water clothes soap and other!?

Laura H.

Yelp
Celery and onions, that's all we received, people farther up in line were getting duplicates, 3 gallons of milk, cases of watermelon, multiples of other items. Lines were extremely long, something needs to change. Celery and onions.

Yelp
I've volunteered here two times now and each time has been a great experience. Gleaners does great things for the community and I'm happy to have played a small role in that a couple of times. The employees are always so kind and thorough when explaining what we're doing. Highly recommend coming here to volunteer!

Yelp
Used my service hours from work to volunteer. You don't need to have service hours to volunteer and I saw quite a few people who appeared to be regular volunteers. Being someone who has been a shopper at Gleaners, it was nice to benefit service to others. Definitely got a workout in and UT was a more active day than my normal working day. Definitely will volunteer again soon.

Yelp
Great place to volunteer. They give so much back to the community. We were so blessed to give of our time.

Yelp
I am a teacher, and on several occasions last school year, Gleaners provided boxes of food and other supplies to families at our school. Each box had food for a family for 3 days. I was blessed to be able to be a part of giving these out, and even delivering a few. Covid hit a lot of families hard, and many were not able to work. This provision supplemented the efforts of our school's food pantry. Thank you so much Gleeners!

Yelp
i gave 3 stars bc they do help feed those in need. However, there are things that were just brought to light that feel are really disheartening coming from what is supposed to be a Christian organisation. First, they shut down a small ministry from providing food 2 days a week in local food deserts! This ministry was getting food from the same grocery as Gleeners and when they found out they went to that stores upper management and talked them into not giving them any more food! Second, smaller organisations can get food from Gleeners to help stock their food pantries or food giveaways, but Gleeners makes these small non profits pay for the food they get from them! So while they do some good for ppl, they have some really bad practices in regards to other ministories who are also just trying to get food to those who need it most!

Yelp
Gleaners helps over 600 partner agencies by providing expired (but not really) food. This was my second year volunteering here. What a great group volunteering spot! They are able to take up to 100 volunteers per time slot. There are all kinds of volunteer opportunities from filing paperwork, making sacks for school lunches, sorting produce, sorting donations by type, etc. Gleaners is very well organized and answers any questions you might have.

Yelp
If you are looking for volunteering opportunities, Gleaners is Wonderful!! I've volunteered here a few times and it's very well organized, and fulfilling. Just go to www.gleaners.volunteerhub.com to get started, sign up for a shift or a few. I've done the front of house and gotten hugs from some of the recipients that walk through, and yesterday I tried doing the back warehouse area. The magnitude of food that comes through is astounding. In the few hours that I was there we sorted through about 500 pounds of food? I enjoyed helping with the warehouse to see where it all begins just as much as I've enjoyed helping in the front of house. A common task in the front is taking food to vehicles since you can't take the shopping carts in the back, and there are quite a few elderly that come in. If you have extra time, they have more than 26,000 volunteer visits each year. Check it out, it seems to make me think my problems are not that bad whenever I do a shift.

Yelp
What a great way to give back to the community! Gleaners is doing great things and it was awesome to be a small part of their mission. I was able to volunteer with my coworkers on a Friday morning. I really appreciated how organized our time was which made me feel productive and not just standing around waiting for direction. Definitely will be back to volunteer!

Yelp
Thank you Gleaners for all you do! The organization of this non-profit rocks. They often host large groups to volunteer and truly will take any help they can get. They always ensure that there's a job for everyone and that everyone's help is being used in an efficient way. Gleaner's aims to eliminate hunger and does so by helping food pantries, soup kitchens and more. They get a lot of donations and always need people to help organize them, group them together, open things, etc. They also have separate programs for kids (back to school snack bags), seniors, and have mobile food pantry options.

Yelp
My company i work for Arlington Roe closes our whole company down for a day and we all go to Gleaners...it was my first time there so i didnt really know what to expect it was an awesome experience we form a line where we filled bags to be given to children so they will have food for the weekend. I was the bag checker at the end and believe i was on my job and loved it. I would love for me and my grands to go and volunteer together i just need to find something on the weekend we can do

Yelp
I've heard of so many companies and friends volunteering at Gleaners and today I was finally able to get in on the action. My company volunteered at their food bank assembling BackSacks packs for children. It was such a productive event as our group was able to pack 1,912 packs with 3 other corporate groups. We formed a very efficient assembly line, each person packing a specific item to contribute to a pack for each child. The time flew by and we would definitely return to volunteer again! They help 21 counties in the state, which was way more than I was aware of and they accept donations as well as purchase food to provide meals for people. They have plenty of other initiatives to help out with the meal gap that you can find on their website!

Yelp
I have been here a few times with IUPUI organizations and I love every experience I have had! My most memorable experience was when we prepared the snack bags for children! The organization did a great job of incorporating a fun atmosphere and knowledge of the non for profit all while helping others. They even set up a mini competition to see which team could prepare the most snack bags. The staff made us feel like we were really making a difference in our local community.

Yelp
Love what this organization gives to those in need! I learned a lot about hunger in the Indianapolis area and all over the country when volunteering here. Gleaners is always in need of volunteers and will gladly accept help from youth as well (9+ years old). As a volunteer, you could be asked to help sort food, package food, or inspect food for faults. Just a tip - bring a jacket in case you're asked to help in the refrigerator section. They do have a selection of coats available if you don't bring your own. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy giving back to the community!

Yelp
What a terrific nonprofit organization! Absolutely wonderful experience helping them out on a Tuesday before the holidays last year. My company set up an opportunity for us to help and I jumped at the chance! They have a fantastic system for volunteers to feel as ease just jumping right in line and helping! My job was to hand out shopping carts, take their numbers, and tell guests where to start. It was awesome to interact and everyone is so appreciative. There are so many ways to help so don't miss a chance to sign up! I can't wait to set up another time!

Yelp
It took Yelp's Not So Random Acts of Kindness to get me to volunteer the first time for Gleaners Food Bank, but the next day I contacted them to sign up to volunteer on a regular basis in the Food Pantry. Gleaners Food Bank serves a vital role in our community, and I'm proud to donate a few hours every other week to help feed the "clients" who would otherwise go hungry, or have to decide if they're going to eat or have electricity or clothing. On the first night I volunteered in the pantry, there was a line out the door of people waiting to get inside. They stop at the desk and sign in, and then they walk through the small square pantry and, based on the number of people in their household, pick a limited number of items from the shelves. My role, along with the 10 or so other volunteers, was to keep the shelves stocked so the clients had choices. With so many people coming through, it took all 10 of us to keep everything stocked and neat. I highly recommend finding time, even if just a few hours a month, to donate to this worthwhile cause. Maybe I'll see you there!

Yelp
This place does AMAZING work for the city. The amount of food they sort, inspect and process is absolutely incredible. I've volunteered here w/ groups before and had good experiences! I wasn't the one arranging the service opportunity but you start w/ a general introduction training to learn more about Gleaners. From there, they assign you to what they need done. I've helped clean the warehouse and sort and inspect food donations. They have the volunteer program down to an art and frequently host student organizations and businesses. There was one Saturday that was very busy w/ volunteer groups and it took awhile to get our assignment and they didn't have much for us to do...but I guess having too many volunteers is a good problem to have! :)

Yelp
Loving that they have a Mobile Unit going out on Saturdays this Summer around town!! Hunger is a terrible thing, and mostly involves children, so GIVE!! Donate or Volunteer or Thank them!

Yelp
I coordinated a day to volunteer with my employer for a group of 30 at Gleaners and the process couldn't have been more smooth. We were given all of the necessary documents, location and parking information well in advance and the volunteer coordinator was easy to reach if I had any questions. On the day of, our group was combined with other groups that were volunteering that day, then split up into small groups and each assigned a Gleaners leader. We first learned about Gleaners; what exactly they do and how our service impacts the community. I highly recommend Gleaners for volunteer opportunities, especially for large groups or corporate team building.

Yelp
I've volunteered at Gleaners Food Bank numerous times. The work they are doing is amazing. They are not only creating food pantries for families in need they also help kids who face food insecurity over school breaks. Continue the great work Gleaners!

Yelp
I went here to volunteer with my students at Ivy Tech. I set up this opportunity and it was very easy. Our students just needed to fill out a release form and when we came, they had us sign in and watch a quick video about the vision behind Gleaners Food Bank - I thought this was a great idea so that we knew the "why" behind what we were doing. We got to walk through the warehouse and it was awesome to see all the food that is donated to people around the city. We got to put together children's snack packs. We did an assembly line and worked together to make over 2,500 snack packs. This was such an awesome bonding time for our group but it was great to be a part of giving back in our city. We will absolutely be going back!

Yelp
Great organization and a great place to volunteer! A group of volunteers came here from work to pack meals for kids - basically it's set up as an assembly line to pack as many bags of food as possible. Makes for some great friendly competition while serving kids in the community who otherwise wouldn't have meals. Highly recommended as a volunteer outing for any organization!

Yelp
Gleaner's is an awesome organization. They provide lots to the community, as well as offering worthwhile volunteer opportunities.
google avatar

Erica L.

Yelp
If you're looking for a place to volunteer that serves the community check out Gleaner's! The staff were so welcoming and made our experience fun. I visited with my office and we packed pack sacks to go home with children on the weekends. It must be empowering to know that working for an organization like this means that each day you are changing lives!

Yelp
OneBrick.org recruited local volunteers to prepare food bags for thousands of children in the Indianapolis area. OneBrick.org launched their Indy chapter recently and today was their inaugeral event. A HUGE thank you goes out to Dana P. -- an Elite Yelper -- in launching OneBrick in Indy!! Having volunteered at Food Banks in Northern California, I was hoping to find a similar organization here in Indianapolis. OneBrick.org was instrumental in bringing the food bank and their needs to the volunteer public. It was such a fun event - and a great way to spend the afternoon! Get about 40+ type A personalities together and great things happen!!! The Food Bank typically puts together about 3000 crates of food bags for children a month...the OneBrick team today did 1500 in about 3 hours! Of course, knowing that we are going to get together with a keg of beer at Bourbon Street Distillery later tonight to celebrate the OneBrick launch event...was additional motivation :-)

Yelp
As a senior citizen, I find myself utilizing Gleaners for the first time in my life. I had always been on the others side but the volunteers that I have encountered at the mobile pantry have always been very nice and helpful. God Bless the works you do.

Rhyana W.

Yelp
In love with this organization's mission. Very impressed by all the hard work and dedication that goes into helping others.

Yelp
A fantastic place to work. It feels like all coworkers are much more than a team, but we could not do what we do without support from volunteers and donors!! Thanks to everyone who is in the fight against hunger.

Deborah B.

Yelp
A life saver for many. People are so helpful and greet you with a smile. I have never waited very long. I want to bless this organization for helping hungry people. God Bless your work
