Eugene’s Best Breakfast and Brunch Restaurants

"A longtime campus go-to for a family brunch-turned-South Eugene strip mall spot, Glenwood still delivers classic hippy sensibilities with a menu that runs the gamut from breakfast skillets to gluten-free pancakes. Tofu and tempeh are abundant. For something on the gut-busting end of the spectrum check out the Monster burrito that’s stuffed with the works — homefries, bacon, ham, mushrooms, and veggies all included. Those looking for something that feels more “wholesome” should check out the Santa Fe breakfast bowl with rice, beans, and plenty of kale, spinach, and other assorted veg, plus mandatory avocado and salsa. Coffee, beer, wine, mimosas, and even kombucha are available." - Brenna Houck

Google
A little disappointed. This was out first visit here. We ordered the special. It was pan seared snapper over potatoes with lobster and tomatoes. Flavor was very good, but there was ZERO "pan sear". Dessert we had the creme Brule, and the apple crisp with ice cream. Brule was excellent, but the apple crisp was 95% apple with zero "crisp". The crispy granola is the best part. We will give it another shot, but we were were disappointed this trip.

I first want to say the food was delicious! I had the pork belly appetizer, seafood & grits & my boyfriend had the rack of lamb. No complaints there. My issue was the service/atmosphere- we were a 10 top that was put in a separate room away from the ambience and rest of the dining room. Our server could not be bothered, service was mediocre at best. He kept making random comments about walking his dog & making sure to stay hydrated. My issue is that we were charged $50 to cut a small grocery store cake ($5pp) and were not told about this charge at any point. Not everyone even wanted a slice but they were not asked & was still charged the fee. We were not offered a dessert menu until after the cake was served. If given beforehand, we probably would've ordered one of each but I guess he didnt want the sale. The server seemed to just want to get us out of there. This really put a damper on my birthday dinner and upset everyone in my party. Even though the food was good, I don't think we'll be back. There are too many other restaurants in Raleigh to choose from. Sucks, because I've been looking forward to dining here.

Located in an unassuming shopping center, Glenwood Grill offers neighbors and those who have the good fortune to find it an excellent dining experience and watering hole. This was our first visit, dining with family who live in the neighborhood. We were told that we "must" order the hamburger, which we did and did not regret. In my opinion, what makes this burger stand on its own are the caramelized onions, horseradish sauce (not to worry, not too much heat, just right!), and challa bread to enclose the contents. The burger was prepared as requested. Our sides of French fries and sweet potato fries (wife and I respectively) were well prepared and crisp. We also shared a side of creamed spinach which was less "creamed" and more spinach in cream. The dish was tasty with the spinach maintaining good texture and freshness. Our service was prompt and professional with the server offering assistance as needed. The ambiance reminded me of some experiences in small restaurants in larger cities: tight but ample seating with an elevated level of lively conversations. Overall a very good dining experience that I would recommend and return to sample other options.

Had a lovely dinner as usual. Haven't been here in 5 years and just as good. Food is fresh & delicious. Loved, loved, loved the pepper jack grits croutons in the Southern Caesar salad. It was my husbands birthday & they surprised us with dessert. As I said we haven't been here in 5 years and yet we were treated like neighbors. Talk about Southern hospitality.

Google
My wife and I came here with a group for a birthday dinner. We got the lamb and fish and grits both of which I thought were tasty. My wife ordered a espresso martini which she did not like and a few others at our table were also unimpressed with the cocktails. The service was okay but we were charged $50 to cut a cake we brought from home which I thought was excessive.

Google
Came here on a Sunday night and the food was delicious; I wish our server had spent more time trying to sell the specials or his favorite dish instead of reading it off a piece of paper but he seemed busy and probably had other tables on the other side of the restaurant. I was in a party of 10 so I understand that can interfere with service at a certain level but half of our table had empty water glasses before a manager came over with a water pitcher. Our server never filled our water himself and the service did not match the restaurant's reputation. He did make sure that all of our food was correct and was to our liking. Unbeknownst to them they had table that consisted of all hospitality workers that work or have worked at a notable Raleigh restaurant and while we understand hiccups, a lack of caring does not go missed. His gratuity was secured due to our large table and it was understood he was just there to put our food on the table.

Google
Decided to stop-in for dinner around 5:30 pm (day before Valentine's) and they surprisingly had a table for us in the "Annex". A reduced menu? I guess for the holiday. Food was good but pricey. Portions on the smaller side.

Google
The service is great! It was the lunch special that made the dinning experience went down. Another great thing is the restroom! My hubby said it was nice and clean!

Yelp
Amazing service, delightful food, and the ambiance was worth the reservation. Book yourself a reservation because this place food is excellent!!!! I had the seafood and grits, delicious!!! My friend had the special that had Pan seared Halibut, and he loved it.

Yelp
Had the steak for lunch. It was cooked well, but the taste was bland. The portion was decent. The salad was fresh, but the steak didn't stand out. Overall, just okay.

Yelp
Great little place. Underrated. The lobster mac was delicious. Will definitely be back to try some more stuff!!

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. From the comfortable, intimate seating, to the delicious menu selections. I was excited to see the Annex that was added during COVID-19, for grab-n-go meals. The service was outstanding, and as usual, I recommend this staple restaurant. The lamb chops were delicious, and I also enjoyed the crab cakes.

Yelp
I've been here a couple times and I'll be honest, I'm not a big spender and these types of restaurants aren't my usual forte but the times I have been here was for business purposes. The food has always been wonderful with no complaints what so ever. The service has always but great and top notch so I have no complaints there either. I do think they are priced a bit high for the portion but this is quite normal for this style restaurant so that's probably more of a personal thing. My only real complaint is that the serve Pepsi products with no option of Mtn Dew, who does that? Lol Yes, I'd love to have another business meal here.

Yelp
We really loved this spot! It was a very cozy and welcoming atmosphere with great service. The mussels were delicious and a generous portion. We split the full carpet bagger and it was a perfect amount of food in addition to the two sides. My only critique was that it could all use a little salt. Once we added a pinch, it was perfect! The fresh cracked pepper was also a great touch.

Yelp
My husband and I were meeting with a friend who is hearing impaired. When looking online for the "quietest restaurants" in Raleigh, the Glenwood Grill was at the top of the list. Our experience was excellent! When we asked for the most quiet spot, we were given a table in a private area in the back of the restaurant. They were also able to turn down the volume of the music upon request! Service was excellent and the food was great! I had the special : mahi mahi with green beans - It was outstanding! Large portions, delicious and cooked to perfection. My husband had the seared Ahi and said it was very good but not outstanding. He said the ahi itself was good but was underwhelmed with the sides that came with it. My friend ordered the catfish. When I texted him to ask him how he liked it, this was his response: "Might just be the best catfish I've ever had - bedded down on it's-gonna-be-a-very-hapy-new-year Hoppin' John and sweet, scrumptious chutney! Yum!"

Yelp
I don't know how I've lived in the area so long and this Summer was my first trip to Glenwood Grill. Tucked away in the back of the Harris Teeter plaza parking was easy for lunch. Everyone from the server to the hostess were very friendly. I went with the salmon salad and it was spot on. The salmon was cooked perfectly and the salad itself was super flavorful. I went in on my birthday and they also gave a free birthday dessert. They even let me pick it! So few places give anything complimentary, let alone let you select it. I thought this was the nicest touch and just awesome customer service. I look forward to dining here again for lunch or dinner!

Yelp
Just got home from another wonderful dinner at Glenwood Grill. Food always fabulous as is service. Generally eat at bar as the company is always good with Chad. He has an excellent command of the bar and is always attentive, charming and on point whether you are having a quick cocktail or dinner. Always enjoy chatting with other friendly folks at bar. Highly recommend whether you are 25 or 65.

Yelp
Enjoyed our food and the service was great. An ordering mishap happened and our mains were served before our appetizers. The restaurant apologized and comped the appetizers. Drinks weee good too. Nice place and would eat hear again

Yelp
Our first time here was to celebrate moms birthday and both of us enjoyed it so much. Everyone from the manager to our waiter made the birthday girl feel very special. A very nice atmosphere with tables for two, four or more. They have some outdoor seating too, but it was just too hot. Located in the Harris teeter shopping center on Glenwood Ave. The only improvement would be to have a good handicap space. There's only one and it's the smallest space I have ever seen for a handicap spot. I had to let mom out in front of the Domino's place, then go park the car. I got some crab soup and it was good but could have used more sherry and more spice of some kind. Also had the fried oysters that came with yummy collards, rice and black eyed peas. Very good. Mom had the shrimp risotto and loved it. I will get that next time. They surprised her with a comp apple crisp, complete with a candle! She was thrilled. I had the creme brûlée and it was topped with some fresh berries and very good. Service was great, despite them being very busy. Note: they close at 2:00 and open again for dinner at 5:00. We will be back!

Yelp
First time in this place - wished that I had try this place sooner. We came sat for early dinner before the crowds. It's not a big place so I'd imagine wait if we came later. We had seafood dip appetizer- has a lot of veggie in it so it's light and pretty good. My son liked the lobster Mac and cheese, parsnip mashed potatoes we like it is the healthier version and our waiter was right, kids can't taste difference. I had seafood paella - it's really fresh and not heavy. Way better than seafood stew we had in other places. Hubby chose the special - grouper and seared shrimp. With succotash and potato cake , it was well thought out together. Tried the blueberry, peach and strawberry cobbler. It's so yummy and not overly sweet. Will definitely, the lamb chops looks good in the next table.

Yelp
Great experience all around. The staff was attentive and the food was creative and satisfying. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
This is a regular restaurant I usually have lunch business meetings in. The food is delicious, plates aren't too big or small, prices are affordable, the space is well lit with a lot of natural light, and servers are friendly. I noticed that the crowd tends to be a bit older as I did not see any young couples or children. I ordered this time the sweet potato and squash brique, the crab cake and the pumpking bread for dessert (yes!!). No complaints at all! There is free parking with a small parking lot. I never have issues finding a spot but do plan for some time if you are planning to go during busy times. Overall, good stuff!

Karen W.

Yelp
I've stopped here for lunch or dinner several times with a friend who recommended it. Food is really outstanding, a little pricey for lunch, but portions are good and you will eat every crumb. Service is very nice. We came here once stressed and sweaty in tennis clothes on a Friday night and they welcomed us with open arms, even though there were a bunch of fancy parties going on. We did sit at the bar so we weren't too obvious!
google avatar

Yelp
It's not much pulling in the parking lot considering it's in a shopping center but prepare yourself to be blown away by good quality food bursting with flavor and excellent customer service. Everything was perfect! Our table was not ready immediately upon arrival but it could have been because my sister added a guest to our group last minute. Needless to say, they made up for it by offering a complimentary appetizer for late seating, which was only 10 minutes or so if that. Our waiter was fabulous! I had the orange pork belly appetizer. I also ordered the grilled lamb entree served over a bed of mushrooms, cabbage, and peas. I also added a side of parmesan cauliflower. As my cocktail, I had the cosmo. Everything I ordered was very good. The service and food here are a solid 5. I look forward to coming back soon!

Linda Y.

Yelp
Shrimp & Grits were delicious. Upscale dining room inside. Located within a shopping area. Waiter was very knowledgeable and we had excellent service. Other staff visited our table to make sure everything was good. Would definitely visit again.

Yelp
Came here for dinner. The a The atmosphere was warm, cozy And elegant. Elegant Espolon margarita- boozy but lacks flavor complexity. Seafood and grits - i enjoyed this dish. The shrimp and scallops were flavorful and the grits were the perfect consistency. Berry cobbler - delicious vanilla Gelato and juicy berries. I wish more crust accompanied the berries. The bartender was excellent - funny and warm. Definitely recommend for date night or even dining alone.

Yelp
This is a small neighborhood restaurant in the 'old money' part of Raleigh across the street from the Carolina Country Club. So the crowd was middle aged to old, white, born-in-Raleigh, folk. The restaurant is located in the back end of a strip mall past the Harris Teeter. Don't let that description fool you, it was nice inside and didn't feel like you were sitting in a strip mall. Our server was Matt. He was friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. She had the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer and the filet mignon as her main course. I had the scallops and added a side of fries for extra $$. The food quality was high. My scallop main course was $18 for only 3 scallops. So I would have appreciated another scallop or two on my plate. I'm glad that I ordered the ala carte french fries to fill me up, because 3 scallops would not have been enough to feed me for dinner! She loved her fried green tomatoes and her filet mignon with the pimento cheese smothered on top. For dessert, she had their most popular fruit crumble (I think it was maybe peach and blueberry) and I had the chocolate pecan pie. Both were yummy.

Yelp
We dined here for Valentine's Day evening prior to an early am flight out of RDU the next am. We had to wait a while for our table despite having a reservation, but understood due to the special occasion and found a seat at the bar to enjoy cocktails prior to dinner. It took forever for the bartender to acknowledge our existence... we finally were served a glass of wine and a French 75 after at least 20 min sitting at the small bar. We probably would've had 2 or 3 more, but it took sooo long to get his attention again we just closed out and moved to our table. We started our dinner with a bottle of CAYMUS and had oyster Rockefeller, wedge salad, and crab soup. Both of these were out of this world - the Rockefeller was served so different than traditional Rockefeller but we loved it! The soup was also phenomenal. For dinner we had the duck and filet with pimento cheese. The duck was the best part of dinner and while the filet itself was just okay the pimento cheese on top was weird but sooo tasty and I don't know that we won't make a filet with pimento at home ourselves as a result. Our waitress was great. The ambiance of the restaurant was okay... the NC State basketball game was on at the bar and was a bit loud given that it was Valentines and the tables were soooo close together that we were practically eating dinner with the random couple next to us. Overall, great food & would def dine here again on a night that isn't Valentine's.

Yelp
Excellent food and good service. Drinks were also good. Loved the beet salad and catfish and fried oysters. Surprisingly nice ambiance in a shopping center.

Greg C.

Yelp
GG is such a neighborhood gem!!! I love the quaint atmosphere and the food is always delicious. You want a really great night out with all the feels? This is it...
google avatar

Sabrina H.

Yelp
Delicious! Went for my birthday dinner last week and was very pleasantly surprised. Food was so good I forgot to get pictures! I had the filet with the pimento cheese on top (sounds weird but was so yummy) and mashed potatoes. For dessert, key lime pie - yum!! Will absolutely go again next time I'm in Raleigh! Great service and I thought the prices were very fair as well.

Arneatha G.

Yelp
This place is a local treasure and always a hit. The food is amazing and the staff is excellent! I have been going here for years and their food is consistently good!
google avatar

Hannah J.

Yelp
Really classy restaurant with a nice ambiance. Perfect place to take your parents who are visiting from out of town. The food is pretty pricey so definitely a great place if you are looking to splurge. Protip: Don't fill up on bread like I always do- the food is too good to do that! Also, the berry ice cream dessert is amazing and worth every penny/calorie!

Kerry B.

Yelp
Food, waiter all fabulous! We started off with the fried green tomatoes, excellent. My boyfriend had the special which was pan seared wild striped bass with a lobster shiitake and spinach risotto w/ honey truffle vinaigrette. Which he inhaled and said it was excellent! I had the carpet bagger 1/2 portion. The steak was cooked perfectly and was delicious as was the mashed potatoes. The sauces were not my favorite but don't judge the restaurant by that. I think it's me. It was a wonderful experience and meal. Came because of a yelp review and did not disappoint, if anything exceeded our expectations. We will definitely be back. Absolutely one of the best restaurants in Raleigh. Ok, it is now the next morning and my boyfriend is still talking about his sea bass. He said and I quote" I haven't ever had a meal I keep thing about the next day" it was that good. I would like to add on to my review as well, I in all honesty do not typically order filet. I am more of a seafood person, I just felt like steak. Which was excellent!

Nancy C.

Yelp
Always a please to dine there with consistently good food, wait staff and ambience. Many ITB go there often. We usually go for special occasions.

Yelp
It has been 8 years to the day that I tried this place and gave it rave reviews. Had Dinner this past week with a business colleague in the area who suggested we eat here. I was not very impressed this time. The Appetizer menu was slim to choose from. The Fried Green tomatoes where two slices with some sort of shrimp slaw. Tasty but way to small for the price. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits to compare to my original meal at this locarion. Grits were just mediocre, Oily bowl of grits with not so flavorful sausage. The kick was gone... we decided to go with dessert and share. Best part of the meal but not earth shattering. John our waiter was great ! He always made sure our glass was always full either water or wine. Might be a great meal for others in the area but just missed the exquisite mark for me this time. need a refresh!
google avatar

Steven G.

Yelp
Don't overlook this gem of a restaurant hidden in a regular shopping plaza. The food and service were fabulous and the prices were ridiculously reasonable! I HIGHLY recommend this cute and amazing establishment!

Joyce ..

Yelp
I reserved a table for 8 first timers for this upscale restaurant with good food and great ambiance. Imagine my surprise when the host seated us in the Annex with lunch room atmosphere and frozen food for our view! I complained to the host and he said he didn't see any difference in the main dining room and the annex! I told him he should have mentioned he could not accommodate a party of 8 in the main dining room with soft lighting and candles. He made no attempt to apologize for this disappointing evening for my out of town guests who were looking forward to sitting and enjoying the ambiance of a fine inner Beltline Raleigh restaurant. Inquire where you will be seated before you make a reservation. The meal prices did not reflect the room of frozen food and one restroom.

Bahrusnikoffin A.

Yelp
Nice outdoor seating, very friendly service. Spinach Blue Cheese Short Ribs was scrumptious.

Brad S.

Yelp
Food was well prepared. Scallops excellent.the seafood grits stole the show. Moscato wine the best.

Yelp
I went here recently for a birthday celebration! We were seated promptly and our server was awesome!! The drinks were delicious and the food was amazing! I definitely recommend dining here!
google avatar

Tyria M.

Yelp
GREAT GREAT GREAT SERVICE! I had my wedding dinner there and everything was excellent. Great hospitality and great food. The manager, Bryce, was amazing and made sure our day went smoothly. We even had custom menus!
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
Server was great. Maple Old fashioned was great. Unfortunately the food was pretty pathetic. bland, little to no flavor, disguised and plated as "fine dining", and even that part was pretty amateur. wanted to like it, but wont be back. Also, if you do end up eating here, skip the main courses and get the $8 mac and cheese. my kid got it and it was definitely the best part.

Betty W.

Yelp
Who puts tomato sauce under fried catfish! Menu described it as fried catfish with slaw and Hoppin John. It did describe a tomato sauce, but we certainly didn't expect the fried catfish to be swimming in it. The Hoppin John was barely any black-eyed peas and mostly a bunch of mushy rice with a few peas stirred in. The tomato sauce, was terrible with the catfish, a terrible pairing, the rice mixture was just horrible. The fried catfish was really good and the slaw was really good-if they would've just served it more traditionally this would've been a great meal. Service was fine , nothing special
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant is a hidden gem. Very delicious starts, entrees, dessert, and drinks! I love this restaurant and can not wait to return to try out more food! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Jenna G.

Yelp
My fiance and I have been going to Glenwood Grill for about 5 years now when we first moved to Raleigh. Although it's not in the heart of downtown or in the most lively area, I think that's part of what makes it such a hidden gem. The food and service are consistently wonderful, and out of all of the times that we've eaten here, we've never once had a bad experience. We even took our parents here when they met for the first time because we knew it would be an enjoyable night. We came here in June after restaurants started opening back up after COVID-19 hit and we were very impressed with the service and food (as usual). They even set up a tent outside with some outdoor AC to accommodate more outdoor diners. I very much appreciated that they even took reservations for the patio, as we were not comfortable with the idea of eating inside during this time. Such a great restaurant, and I'm very glad they're continuing to stay busy during this time.

Mary Magee S.

Yelp
The food, service and ambience were perfect! It is on our go to list when we want a night out!
google avatar

Karianne F.

Yelp
This was a most excellent and unexpected find, thanks to Yelp reviews! The service and food are fantastic, the ambience is good and the value was amazing! Highly recommend! (Also, the acoustics are good, so you can enjoy a nice conversation with your group!)

Yelp
Small to mid size restaurant in a small plaza with a Harris Teeter. They serve southern-inspired cuisine. Was pretty busy for a weeknight, and it seems like most customers had reservations, but two of us with no reservations only had to wait a few minutes for a table. For the food, I got the sesame-encrusted shrimp for the appetizer, which tasted merely okay. For the entree, I got the baked Parmesan swordfish, and that was good. I like the zesty sauce they had in the dish to compliment the taste of the fish. The best part of the meal was the dessert, where I got the seasonal pumpkin spice cheesecake. The cheesecake had plenty of flavor, but wasn't too heavy or too sweet. Overall a decent enough meal.

Sandra P.

Yelp
Great food and service every time! Tried a variety of items over the years. One of those can't go wrong places.
google avatar

Carmelle A.

Yelp
Went here to celebrate my being sworn in to the bar. From the outside it doesn't look like much but inside the ambience was so much better. My mom and I ordered the scallops, crabcakes, mashed potatoes, and mac and cheese. Absolutely delicious! Super buttery and rich but worth all of the calories and fat. For dessert we had the cobbler a la mode which was totally delicious. I'll be back!

Jack D.

Yelp
Very loud place. It's changed over the years. Hadn't been there in about 7 years. There was a big difference in quality of my favorite meal, the carpet bagger, from 7years ago. Parts of it were Luke warm and cold. The tenderloin seemed thinner and was poorly cooked and cold. They were very short staffed as the maitre'd was pulling triple duty seating, serving and clearing tables. Not a good experience.
google avatar

Sara Z.

Yelp
Wow! Service, wine selection, food options, taste, portions and overall experience. We had found this place on Yelp last year, but just got the opportunity to dine at GG. This definitely will be part of our rotation going forward. I do recommend reservations.
google avatar

Charles P.

Yelp
Excellent, excellent, excellent! OMG. Clearly, this is a seafood restaurant, but, I ended up ordering the lamb chops. And boy, wow, I was not disappointed. I love going to restaurants where it is almost impossible for me to duplicate the dish. This dish was amazing and I finished the entire dish (which is unheard of). The host and server were exceptional and of course a big shout out to to all of the cooks. Glenwood Grill exceeded my expectations. The oysters that we had as appetizers were perfectly friend and everyone in my party enjoyed their dishes. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Dee D.

Yelp
This was one of my favorite dinners that I've had in Raleigh so far. The meat was cooked perfectly. The atmosphere was busy but not overly crowded. I wouldn't recommend this place for a quiet dinner for that reason, but still a nice date night!

Bob S.

Yelp
Went for lunch, and the food was excellent. I did learn that reservations are recommended. We were able to be seated, only because there was sufficient time before the next reservation for our table. But we were lucky. I had the Mahi Taco and my wife had the She Crab Soup. Great service, and wonderful lunch selections.
google avatar

Jill B.

Yelp
Food atmosphere and service is superb. Very intimate restaurant experience and such flavorful dishes.
