Hell to the YES! It's hard finding GREAT pupusas, especially when your aunts and cousins from the motherland come over and influence your taste buds with the wonderfulness that is the PUPUSA.
The pupusa is a traditional Salvadoran dish. It can be best described as a thick, handmade tortilla with your choice of filling. More traditional fillings include, cheese, fried pork, beans, or "revueltas" (mixed) that include cheese, pork and beans. Usually they are topped with a vinegary shredded cabbage and carrot salad called "curtido" and a tomato/vinegar based salsa (not spicy).
Everyone thinks that just because you are Salvadoran you can make pupusas, but that is not the case. My mother (who is Salvadoran) can't make traditional pupusas to save her life. She makes variations of mush that is still quite edible though. But my aunt, her sister, Holy shit, she gets down! They say you have to have "special hands" to be able to make them correctly. Damn, I think I got "special hands" in another department. Oh well. No complaints heard there.
But anyway, back to pupusas and hands..... The folks over at Gloria's Pupuseria have the best pupusa making hands EVER! Next to my aunt's of course. Some places make them with way too much masa (dough) where you can't even taste the filling. The pupusas here are HUGE and they are not stingy with the filling. I ordered two revueltas and one pure chicharron (fried pork). I scarfed down one revuelta and the half of the chicharron one. My friends and I were pleasantly surprised. They were cheap too. $2.45 each.
We also ordered a plate of chicharrones. These are not to be confused with the traditional Mexican chicharrones which are mostly fried pieces of skin. Salvadoran chicharrones are fried pieces of pork meat, with all kinds of crispiness going on. I had about 2.5 pieces, with lemon and salsa. UUuuhhhh, OOOhh!!! Yeah. They were delicious. The kind of delicious, where you close your eyes and moan a little bit. I had to stop myself after the 2.5 pieces that I had (yes 2.5 and NOT 25) . I didn't want to have a heart attack or not fit into those shorts that I have managed to fit back into after a few years. *sigh*
5 F*ckin' stars for this place. I don't even care the dude at the register had an attitude. Trust me, I know Salvadoran Mammas. I sympathize with his attitude and the "kill me now" look he had on his face.
*sigh* MMMM mmm mmmm... sorry, getting flashbacks of the pupusas and chicharrones.
Gloria's embraces the Mexican sentiment of Huntington Park and make a tribute to it by having a bottle of Tapatio at each table. Can we say "peace offering?" For the mixed breed that I am (Mexican-Salvadoran), I sure hope so.
****National Pupusa Day is observed on November 13. Thanks Wikipedia, but I'll be having them way more often than that.****
*Check out the pictures I snapped before devouring them.
