Why Food Service Jobs Shouldn’t Be Thought of as Temporary | Eater

"This small restaurant tried to remain open for takeout and delivery during the downturn but saw almost no business, leaving staff often alone in the kitchen; one line cook volunteered to be laid off so coworkers could keep the meager hours. The worker, who began in her mother’s restaurant as a teen, describes food-service work as beloved because of the immediate gratification of making something for someone, and notes that the restaurant and bar community has been unusually welcoming to her as a trans woman in a conservative region." - Jaya Saxena

I wanted to try something different. My friend and I stopped here for lunch. Parking is limited to a side road with construction right now thanks to a sinkhole that opened up. We ordered at 11:08, and five minutes later the food was brought to our table. The Gyros were on special today at a reduced price. I ordered the Surf-N-Turf gyro. Marinated steak and grilled shrimp wrapped with onions, peppers, sautéed mushrooms, Pepper Jack cheese, and comeback sauce. My friend had the Veggie gyro. Zucchini, squash, peppers, onions, and mushrooms wrapped with lettuce, topped with feta cheese and homemade tzatziki. They came with fries. The sandwich was a handful and delicious. The fries were similar to the ones at Checkers, but better tasting. It was definitely a filling meal. They play loud punk rock music in the background, which was a little too loud for our liking. The place didn't get busy until it was almost noon.

Google
Reasonably priced, delicious Greek & Mediterranean food in a relaxed, college restaurant/bar type atmosphere. My falafel plate tasted yummy & was cooked perfectly, fully cooked but not hard. My husband's Italian gyro contained pepperoni, salami, cheese & tomatoes, sort of like a pizza in a gyro; he thoroughly enjoyed his food, as did I. They also offered a nicely stocked bar, about 6 TVs & played varied music from 70s & 80s.

Google
$10 order of Motz sticks is 5 sticks, on a warm bed of greens. In the store they said it was about 8. And then I called after I got my order and they said 6-7. Don’t really understand how a quantifiable item can have a varying amount in the order. Especially when you’re just pulling them frozen out of a bag and putting it in a fryer is not like they’re made from scratch.

Google
Food was ok. Pepperjack Gyro was average. Pizza wasn't hot. It tasted like it had been sitting under a heat lamp and pepperoni were just added to a cheese pizza. Overall there are better places to eat in the area. Parking was still very limited. Service was prompt. Not crowded since it UA was out.

Ah I love GB!! THe number one thing I'd recommend are their Chicken Gyros. I'm not a huge fan of honey mustard, but for some reason, I started liking it ever since I had their Gyros. But I also feel like the Gyros are pretty small, and wish they could offer more. I've had their pizzas too, and they are pretty decent.

Google
If you like Gyros this is a good eat. The fries looked burnt, but they said that is how they usually look. If you add cheese to the fries it make a world of difference. Over all the food was good I added the pepper jelly to my Gyros and it just gave it some extra tang!! The staff we very pleasant and the wait was not long at all.

This restaurant is within walking distance of Embassy Suites and the Home2 (a bit farther). We were promptly seated, our drink order was taken and we had menus in hand in shirt order. Our server was nice, but slightly inefficient. Our sauce on the side was forgotten and my brother's gyro didn't come with crispy bacon like it should have. At least the price difference was negligible and the taste was still very good. The $5 gyros all day on Tuesday special made the mistakes easy to overlook. This is a fact we had to determine on our own though it was something I would think a server should make sure to share. Overall we had a great experience with the service and food. The only reason this location lost a star was the lack of cleanliness. Upon entry the whole place smelled musty and dingy. The floors were sticky and the bathrooms weren't great.

Google
One of students' favorite hang out spots. Food is tasty & reasonably priced. Beer is dirt cheap. Karaoke on weekends. Does get loud at night, so be prepared.

Yelp
First time in here the other day for lunch. Person at the counter informs me they don't have steak or lamb or normal gyro filling so I go with chicken. Fries are good. Gyro flatbread is pretty good, though the lettuce left a lot to be desired. But the big issue was the chicken. It was so over cooked as to be practically desiccated. It was as dry as the Gobi desert. It had an almost sawdust consistency. Needless to say, not a great lunch. Recommend Mediterranean Sandwich over this place, at least after this first experience.

Yelp
Quick service and the ambiance is great right on the strip! Love the alternative seating options between tables, booths, hi-tops and even the bar. Love sitting outside when it's hot out too! BEST PIZZA IN TOWN!!!

Yelp
I loved dining at the Glory Bound location that was in Birmingham, and was very disappointed when it closed. So, I was happy to visit here on Monday night with David L and our friend Kenny. The restaurant is conveniently located on the "strip" next to the University of Alabama campus. The decor is rustic and comfortable. The vibe is very much what you would expect from a college bar/restaurant. Casual and primarily college-age customers. The menu is on a large blackboard. The setup is you order at the counter register, and are given a number. Food is delivered to your table. On our visit service was good and pretty fast. I had the steak gyro and side salad with Greek dressing. I thought the gyro was good, The salad was fresh, and I really like the dressing. I also tried the onion rings and I thought they were too bready. I would not recommend the onion rings. I thought Glory Bound was good, but I remember the Birmingham location being better. Funny thing how good memories always set your expectations higher than they probably should be.

Yelp
I haveeeee to unfortunately say watch out if you're ordering the cheese rolls. Maybe I misunderstood but I was definitely picturing like a cheesy garlic knot. This is kind of an odd concoction and maybe they are good for some people but just be warned that they taste more like wontons than rolls. The cheesy bread is really good definitely would get that instead.

Jerry P.

Yelp
Food was spot on!!! Service was friendly and respectful... Good place to enjoy a gyro!!!

Yelp
Favorite establishment in all of Tuscaloosa. Everyone who works here is so amazing and it is always a good time. Solid food, all of my dining dollars are spent here. Nothing better than getting together with some friends here. If I didn't have to move out of Tuscaloosa, I would be a regular here forever. Love u GB

Yelp
Service wasn't good. Girl taking the order was not nice to us. She didn't care about her job clearly what was under her fingernails more. We loved the food though! I got a Greek Salad and he got falafel gyro with falafels. Great fresh salad and hot falafels! Maybe next time we will have a better luck with the cashier.

Connor C.

Yelp
Good service good food good vibes. They accept dining dollars too. I recommend the gyro over the pizza

Yelp
I recently learned that I have been saying gyro wrong my whole life lol. Glory bound is located on the strip and although is very packed at night, the wait isn't too bad! The gyros could use a little more meat but it's okay. The fries were crispy and was a nice touch of crunch!

Sean T.

Yelp
Been here a bunch of times and love it. I want to throw something out there that I have noticed during recent visits. The staff seems miserable, and stare daggers through me when I come in and have been generally less friendly than in the past. This is not a one-time occurrence, which is saddening to me as I like the food so much. I want to underscore my previous statement by saying that I hope that things are going okay behind the counter and that I hate to see folks having a bad time at work. Culture comes from owners and managers and I do not want to cause employees trouble by writing this review. Do better folks!

Yelp
I called in a To-Go order today (1/18/25), went to pick it up and noticed the restaurant was VERY busy, the line of people waiting to order was literally to the door- probably 20-25 people. I walk up to the register bc I see my food & ask the short brunette counter girl if she could quickly ring me up. She told me they only had one register and that I'd have to go to the back of the line & wait to pay.... The whole point of To-go food is to skip the line.. she really expected me to wait another 30 mins for the food that was sitting RIGHT there getting cold. I asked her to cancel it & she ROLLED HER EYES at me!!! I told the bartender, he grabbed my food & rang me up immediately (interesting how another register magically appeared!) & apologized profusely for her behavior. I'm sorry that is RIDICULOUS, she was so so rude & being busy is no excuse. It pissed me off to the point I prob won't be back even though I love the cheese rolls. *Also I'd like to point out I tried to pay online but got an error page, don't offer to-go if you can't handle the volume!

Sebastien D.

Yelp
Be weary of a "gyro" place with literally 18 different types. Quantity over quality here. I had the Surf and Turf. Chewy meat, crunchy pre-frozen shrimp, and odd tasting sauce. We overheard a nearby table also complaining to the front that their meal was not what they ordered. Tables are all un-even as well as the benches near the front entrance.

Yelp
Can't go wrong here at Glory Bound! The gyros are amazing -- we always get the breakfast gyro (meat, cheese, eggs, tzatziki) no matter the time of day. Most gyros are $10.95. Haven't had their pizzas but they look solid. Unlimited refills of soda at the fountain. Place is usually crowded but I've never had trouble finding a place to sit. Outdoor seating is plentiful and you can always grab a spot at the bar. Noise level is what you'd expect but fairly steady and not obnoxious unless there's a Bama game on. Students here are unusually well behaved. Staff is mostly students including an elite collection of top tier sorority retirees. Service is efficient and cool but never effusive. This is a spot. On Gyro Tuesday ($6.95), even more so.

Yelp
What an awesome place!! ROLL TIDE game day and the town us PACKED! Walking past this little pizza joint and we happen to see an open table. This nice gentleman says it's open seating, first come first serve. We jumped at it!! I sat down and my husband ventured inside to see what they had. He ordered the hummus, nuffalo chix pizza, a few mimosas, and a spiked strawberry lemonade. The hummus came out first and was fresh and the bread was hot! Yum!! Next, here comes the pizza. The flavor was right on point along with the crust! It wasn't over doughy which was right up our alley. The mimosas were full of life and my husband loved his spiked punch. The atmosphere was light, super friendly, and tidy. Come to find out the gentleman up front taking care of everyone was the owner. Customer experience was super important to him and it showed. Thanks for a great game day lunch!

Yelp
What a great little place! My falafel gyro was great! The falafel was perfect. The pita was fresh. There was plenty of tzatziki sauce on my gyro and it was pretty stuffed too! The fries were also great; they were perfectly seasoned and crispy. My only complaints are that it was hard to find napkins in the restaurant. They do not have any sitting out and only have one dispenser in a very hidden place on the wall, and when you're eating a messy gyro, napkins are a must. My other complaint is that though my falafel was good, it was not the stuffed jalapeño and cheese falafel I ordered. It was regular falafel, which as I said was good, but a little disappointing when I paid extra for the stuffed falafel. Over all though I love this place and will be back to try some pizza and those Happy Hour deals!

Yelp
Surprised good gyro salad for what looks like a college dive bar. Found myself needing some lunch and this place popped up. Super friendly service, good beer selection on tap and great food? What more could you want?
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Good stuff here. This is a quintessential Tuscaloosa spot. The food was tasty, but a bit on the small side overall. Gyro meat was scant but it, as well as the sauce, had a wonderful flavor. Pasta salad was nice. Hummus was tasty. Overall a good experience and one to return to! Check 'em out!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were feeling like eating a gyro last night (honestly, we pretty much always are), so we tried out Glory Bound. I've read that this is the relocated version of the restaurant -- it's on the strip, walkable from UA's campus. Parking is not amazing, but that seems to be the case almost everywhere in town. The restaurant is kind of tiny, with decor I'd describe as somewhat upscale bar furniture with a dash of hipster wall art. It was clean and pleasant. While the hostess was a little gruff, our waitress was very pleasant and accommodated the customization of my gyro very happily. She put us right at ease. My boyfriend had the classic gyro (lamb and beef), and I had the chicken gyro, subbing out honey mustard with tzatziki and without onions. When it arrived, they called it a classic gyro with chicken, which may be how I order it in the future to avoid confusing instructions! The gyros were pretty tasty. Fresh and light toppings in a fluffy and warm pita; they also struck the perfect balance with the tzatziki sauce. Not enough to make it soggy, just enough to have a little in every bite. The meat portions were generous and flavorful in both. The fries were a bit of a disappointment. They're potato wedges, and as is the case with most potato wedges, they weren't crispy enough. However, the flavor was good. They also have a mixed drink menu with some unique creations that look and sound pretty tasty. So far, we've tried Hooligan's on Hargrove and Glory Bound for gyros. Hooligan's has better fries and is more convenient for us; however, Glory Bound edges them out slightly for gyros. Not sure who we'll visit more, but I can confidently say I'd return to Glory Bound.

Yelp
We went looking for Greek food and found this little gem. Geared for a college town crowd the menu is as promised. Many gyro options, some traditional and others inventive. Interior is basic. Prices are good for the high quality. The food is very well done. Parking is scarce but it's worth a try.
google avatar

Yelp
We love gyros and Glory Bound's pepperjack version is amazing. This place has been a family favorite since it opened in Tuscaloosa, back on the other side of downtown. Lots of delicious offerings!

David A.

Yelp
Great place to eat! Service is usually quick and the food is great! It's in the middle of town so it is a convenient place to eat
google avatar

Katie R.

Yelp
This is a great gyro place to satisfy your Greek cravings. My friends and I come here often; great location on the strip in Tuscaloosa next to a variety of bars. They're happy hour is competitive and they have $4 mules! Score! I ordered the Pepperjack Gyro on this visit and I think I've found my new go-to! It was stuffed with lamb, beef and extras. The cheese rolls appetizer is also awesome!! They changed up their service since the last time I was here; order at the bar, take a number, and have it brought to you. A little less interactive than before, but the food comes out ASAP

Yelp
We had a fabulous experience here for an early dinner. My son has recently had surgery and he was using crutches to get inside with his nonweightbearing leg. They quickly hustled to hold the door open so we could get inside. They were so helpful in making sure that we had a table where he could safely sit. Our pizzas were cooked to perfection (one thin crust and one regular crust). They have delicious Buffalo Chicken pizza, btw. Their staff was immensely helpful, especially when I realized they had thin crust after I had placed my order. We will be back
google avatar

Yelp
Good food, good drinks and great atmosphere. The food is very tasty. Both the greek or pizza is on point. The staff is very friendly and they have a nice area to accommodate large groups. My highest recommendation goes to the young man behind the bar from California Conner!!! His Bloody Marys are a work of art!!! This guy knows what it takes to make one. If you can treat yourself on a Sunday, you definitely should.

Robert B.

Yelp
Original Gyro by far the best, freshest gyro I have had in decades. Service was fast and the staff was friendly.
google avatar

Luther B.

Yelp
Everything is good here. Top notch hummus. The gyros are really good. Everything we've tried has been good. Service is quick.
google avatar

Christopher T.

Yelp
This is a great place, they have a nice pizza selection make to order! Along with what has made them whom they are their gyro's! This location also has a full bar as well! Has outdoor and indoor sitting! Can be cramped on game day!
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
This place is awesome - great gyros and pizzas. They also have great drink specials, way better than what they show the specials as on the website (you should probably update that!)
google avatar

Caitlin R.

Yelp
Super fast, fresh, and cheap! I got the salad and humus combo and added lamb to make a do-it yourself gyro plate. It turned out to be a lot of food for only $12! I will definitely be back to try some of the other menu items.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
This review is an oldie but a goodie--and a quickie, as well! I stopped by Glory Bound for lunch during my first week after having moved to Tuscaloosa. I took advantage of their lunch special, which was $5 salads, and ordered the chicken pasta salad ($5). For the size and quality, you really can't beat this deal! The salad, which consisted of lettuce, chicken, feta, and pasta dressed with a Greek vinaigrette, was fresh, tasty, and filling. Service was efficient and attentive to filling my water glass. What's not to like? If you're looking for a cheap lunch spot in Tuscaloosa, give Glory Bound a try, and be sure to try their special of the day!
google avatar

Dylon S.

Yelp
Orders some gyros to go from this place to eat across the street. I stuck with the classic gyro but there certainly were some fancy beefed up options to choose from. A good spot if you're looking for some quick, cheap dinner.

Cade C.

Yelp
place is good. always fast and they take dining dollars. good pizza and gyros. awesome place to watch sports

Kaleigh S.

Yelp
the food quality is not amazing, but it is still good. I really enjoy the greek salad and their fries are delicious too.
google avatar

H B.

Yelp
Super good food- great place for college students looking for a local bite. Great atmosphere, and lots of good Greek food options on the menu as well as pizza, etc!

B C C.

Yelp
Very much a college kid vibe. We enjoyed a gyro and a pizza with fries. The food was pretty good- pizza tasted so fresh, like fresh tomatoes. Suuuuper thin crust actually made it difficult to eat. I really wanted a knife but there were only forks? Gyro seemed to pass his test of tasty food. Fries seemed to be battered and tasted really good. Staff was friendly. I'd go back if I were ever in town again :)

L C.

Yelp
I love Glorybound. They have a great college atmosphere and the food is great. I love that they take dining dollars and their pizza is delicious!!!
google avatar

Doug B.

Yelp
What an excellent choice before a gameday at Alabama! We stopped in at around 10:30 in the morning for a night game. Weren't many people there yet and we had the place all to ourselves. We got a pepperjack gyro, chicken pizza, and chicken gyro. All solid choices. It was tough to pick just one, because this is the type of place where you can just tell that everything is good. Gives me plenty of reasons to go back!! When the food came out, I was impressed by how flavorful everything was, the perfect pita consistency, and the way the honey mustard added a fantastic zing to the gyro. Excellent all around!!
google avatar

Randy B.

Yelp
This was one of the best Gyro's I have ever had, including the ones I used to get in Athens Greece! Plenty meaty, fresh lettuce and onions and a wonder tzatziki sauce. I'm not a falafel fan, my wife is. However, theirs are pretty damn good. They also have a very good selection of local craft beers. Not surprising, this is a college town. This was our first time to visit, but not our last. Nice job!
google avatar

Nikki C.

Yelp
Loved the original Gyro! Infused blueberry vodka was amazing also! I keep coming back to try something new and I can't stop ordering the fabulous gyro meat!!!
google avatar

Maslin B.

Yelp
By far one of my most favorite places to eat in Tuscaloosa. The Comeback Gyro will definitely have you coming back for more.
google avatar

Shay A.

Yelp
Prices are decent but after today I won't be returning. Called in an order. Simple order. Pepperjack Shrimp Gyro. Picked it up, headed back to work. Got to work, open my food and it looks like a struggle meal! LOL! It's literally meat (Shrimp & Bacon) and cheese in a wrap. NOTHING listed on the menu was on my gyro. Not even lettuce!! Drive back to the restaurant to give them another chance. The waiter had an attitude as if she was mad AT ME for THEIR MISTAKE. Ignored her attitude, got my "correct" food, got in the car, checked my food before I leave.. and they have filled my entire gyro with lettuce. Like lettuce was bursting out!! LOL!! I couldve made a salad with all that lettuce. They were being such butts. So much so, that they forgot the bacon on the gyro! So not only did they mess up once, they got an attitude, then messed up AGAIN trying to be an a$s. Lol!! I kindly took my food back in and requested a refund :)
google avatar

Nancy C.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch with a group of ten. Yes, that is a big group, but there was only 3 tables with 2 seated through the rest of the restaurant. So it wasn't slammed. I ordered the grilled chicken spinach salad. Service was good. Not too long of a wait. My issue is that the salad had extremely dry grilled gnarly chicken. It took awhile to cut it up into bite size pieces.
google avatar

Jon A.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch on a 800+ mile trip across the gulf states, and enjoyed it immensely. While looking I was looking for a place that at least had some traffic outside of it, and this place was the only one that wasn't a chain that had anyone outside, so I stopped in. Glad I did. I kept it simple for lunch, just ordering their classic gyro platter. The gyro is a little smaller than what I am accustomed to, but the taste was beautiful. The chips on the side were also quite tasty, and did not require any additions. I would definitely try them again if I ever pass through there again.
google avatar

Ryan F.

Yelp
Great food, great happy hour pricing. Since changing locations service has improved dramatically. Good management.
google avatar

Joshua M.

Yelp
One of the best gyros I've had in years! Super chill spot, wasn't that packed. Fries were delicious and food piping hot! Drink selection was impressive. We had the original/classic gyros and ate every bite. Street parking was available, very affordable. Staff super friendly.
google avatar

Allison A.

Yelp
Have missed this since it moved! Students gone so easy to get in- on the strip. Great Greek pizza.

Omar R.

Yelp
Hands down the best Gyro I've ever had! This is coming from a proud Mediterranean who has lived all over the world and had more Gyros than I should ever admit to. One of the worst things that has happened to the Birmingham, AL food scene was when they closed down the GBGC here. Go there, you won't regret it!
google avatar

Anthony C.

Yelp
AWESOME PLACE! We sat here for several hours during the Iron Bowl and watched the game. It's right on the main drag of all the bars and restaurants in the University Village and it a stones throw from the stadium! Great location, outdoor seating, and semi mid level with views of TV's. Lots of bar seating and table seating as well. Food was great, service was 100%, and the place is very clean. It's obvious this place is run well and managed well and if I ever come back to this area I'll return or recommend!
google avatar

Eugene C.

Yelp
My friend and I were looking for a place to eat on the strip and we decided to come here bc we weren't feeling some of the other options and this place was pretty good! We were seated super quick and the food came out fast too!! I got the bbq ranch gyro and it tasted good! It was also super filling also! On tuesdays, they offer $5 gyros -no steak or shrimp gyros- w a side of fries or whatever side you want and it's a super good deal! I really like this place and suggest it to those who are looking for something different.
