Why Makeup and Skincare Brands Are Opening Pop-Up Cafes | Eater

"A West Hollywood showroom on Melrose Place that serves as both a retail shop and an Instagram-bait space where customers can try products, create content, hang out, and experience the brand in person; it extends the company’s digital community by offering the kind of ‘pink moment’ that drives social sharing and allows visitors to test items outside of online shopping." - Elizabeth Denton

Google
Glossier in LA is more than just a store—it’s an experience. From the moment you walk in, it’s clear they’ve embraced the go big or go home philosophy. The space is beautifully designed, full of color and charm, and it’s almost impossible not to smile once you’re inside. A special shoutout to Sydney—if I’m remembering her name right—a total sweetheart from Washington who helped me on April 14th. She made the visit even more delightful. The 3-for-$30 gloss deal reeled me in, and just like a kid in a candy store, I got to add little charms to each one. Who says lip gloss charms are only for kids? Joy is ageless, and Glossier knows it.

Google
Glossier store is stunningly cool and welcoming. Staff is friendly and help, allow customers to browse without being pushy and helpful with product knowledge. The transaction process is seamless - staff tap items onto their iPads and keep a running tally until you’re done. Then the order is prepped. The store is super cute and near - I love a neat store. All the products are available to test and across multiple display stations. There is a cute mirror selfie set up and also waiting areas. The globe chill out zone is pretty awesome. Street parking is available in the area for around $2 per hour.

Google
I am not usually one to leave a review but Lani at Glossier gave me the best customer service experience I've ever had yesterday. I came in because the pump to my foundation had broken and she was SO HELPFUL AND NICE. Oh, and the products are great too. I am not a fan of wearing too much make up but the foundation and concealer give me the perfect amount of coverage and glow (and skincare!). Thank you, Glossier, and thank you, Lani!

Google
I like small stores before, but it is still attractive.Customer adaptation was good and cute and lovely. store is enough to capture women's hearts. There is a space where you can rest, and photo zone is cute.

Google
A very cool, trendy, and interesting LA experience. This store is beautiful and it’s on a very chic weho intersection. Stop in and also stop by the Alfred’s next door.

Google
Great in store experience. Staff is always friendly and helpful. But where the heck are you all parking?! I've been about 5 different times and I never know what I'm doing lol

I love Glossier. Staffs were friendly. I purchased more than $60 so I got free token but unfortunately the machine malfunctioned (I lost my chance 😭😭)

Google
The Glossier store was too cool, aesthetically pleasing, and very pink! They have tables of testers available to try out, and once you've decided what you like and want to purchase, you find an associate to place your order. They then take your name, and you wait for it in the back of the store, where they give you your cute little pink bag. Don’t forget to take a mirror selfie with the oversized cloud paints before you leave.

Yelp
Glossier Melrose is a whole vibe! From the moment I walked in, I felt like I stepped into skincare heaven everything is so aesthetic, clean, and just fun. But the real star of the visit? Steph! She was incredibly kind, super knowledgeable, and made the experience so easy and enjoyable. She helped me pick out the perfect products for my skin type, gave me honest tips, and made me feel like a total queen. If you're in LA and love skincare or makeup, you HAVE to stop by this location. And if you're lucky enough to be helped by Steph, you're in very good hands!

Yelp
As an elder Gen Z, this Glossier store is what dreams are made of. I have owned Glossier products since I first started wearing makeup in high school. Still love my Balm Dot Calms at my ripe age of 23. Anyways, I was on Melrose to check out the Rhode pop up around the corner. However, it looked like the line of a Sears with mid tier Black Friday discounts on Thanksgiving Eve. So I went to the glossier store which was awesome. It was huge and so well designed. I wish I caught the name of my sales associate, but they were awesome and I was the one who purchased 3 lip balms and a liquid blush. I loved it, and I got to try the claw machine and won a gold monochrome eye shadow palette. It's awesome because I actually don't own any gold eye shadow. Then I went to glossier alley and visited the Alfred's and got a speciality drink. This was such a cool concept and I loved my drink and I'm not normally an Alfred fan! Anyways this was a great experience and I can't wait to come back.

Yelp
This place is incredible, very spacious and nice ambiance. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful and its much like a museum or gallery when you come in.
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
Looove the store. They have multiple stations with skin, body, lip and makeup testers. Their merch is also displayed. Team members are floating throughout the stores with iPads to help you place your order while you wait in the waiting area. You'd order is ready within minutes. They pencils and paper at the entrance is the menu where you can choose your items and then hand it to a team member.
google avatar

Christine I.

Yelp
Fun stop to grab your makeup and skincare and do a little photo op! Loved the aesthetics and how easy to test the products you've been wanting try. If you're in the area come thru! There's a handful of things to do in the area around.
google avatar

Yelp
Warning: this review is probably biased because I adore Glossier! The entire store is clean and spacious. It is so much bigger than the old store, pre-Covid. Staff is friendly but I do think they need more people on the floor helping all the clients. It's a virtual checkout system, similar to Apple. You place your order with a staff member who enters it on an iPad and it's prepared and brought to you. Which just gives you more time to look around and second guess whether or not you bought enough lip balm! And the setting is brilliant because there's a "Glossier" alley right beside the store where you can sip on a latte afterwards, while you lament all the money you just spent on makeup. LOL

Yelp
Don't get me wrong, parking is ass lol thank you to Sydney for all your help. Hopefully, I don't have to return in about two months because your chances of finding parking are very slim. Sydney color matched me perfectly on the first try. Found all the products I was looking for. Was a great trip. Very clean, beautiful, laid out store.

Yelp
It was a great experience! I loved how you were able to sample literally everything. Very clean and well organized space. The workers are very nice, helpful and patient.
google avatar

Yelp
This store is massive! The decorations are pretty and it's clean and new. I like the store, but this brand is past its heyday now. It used to be really popular, but other brands have surpassed it now. You can get comparable products for the same or less price. Unless they do something new, I don't think it will ever get back to the good old days.
google avatar

Yelp
The customer service here is amazing -- especially from Al-Baab. I purchased a few items in store without using my coupon and was so sad when I walked out. Walked back in and asked for some help in returning and repurchasing so I could use it.. which I know can be annoying. Al-baab was SO SWEET about it!! I would 1000% come back just bc of her alone!!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by to check out their blushes. The sales associate was very helpful finding blush colors that matched my skin. I love that you can test all the products to see what works best. The store is big and nicely decorated. It's a cute and fun store. I ended up buying two blushes that I'm excited to wear. The only downside is parking which is very limited.

Alejandra G.

Yelp
a super fun and aesthetic beauty store with so many great products!!! we visited the glossier store and it was so spacious inside. the parking situation is alright, but pretty limited. while walking in the store we were greeted by the workers and were informed on how to order any products we wanted. i got one of their lip balms and it came out so quickly, the service was great and the workers were all sweet and helpful. there's tons of great photo ops around the store. definitely worth checking out if you're into beauty products!

Yelp
Went right when they opened and had no problem finding parking around the corner. Street parking only. I went right after Christmas so it wasn't busy but it did start picking up when I left (around 30-45 mins after they opened). The staff were all friendly! I've been to the Glossier store in Miami, their pop-up in SF, and their old LA location. It would be helpful if all their employees wore the pink jumpsuit but only some were wearing it. Others had on the Glossier sweaters, others normal clothes. Not hard to locate them since they all were carrying iPads but the image of Glossier isn't up to par with the other locations I've visited. Nonetheless the inside is gorgeous. Lots of photo ops. You can try and test everything. All their products are laid out for you to sample and play with. They give you a paper and pencil upon entering and you just write down what you want and you find a worker to checkout via iPad and pay digitally. I think they accept cash at the registers. They also have restrooms available which is convenient. A fun experience, Glossier never fails.

Yelp
I'm so glad Glossier came back! The new space is huge and well designed, very impressive. I came in on a Friday morning to pick up a few products for myself as well as for a friend's birthday. Fortunately it was not packed and the service was great. The young lady assisting me was really helpful and nice with her suggestions because I was having trouble picking out a few gifts. I love Glossier's products- they're lightweight, natural looking and don't break my wallet! Check this place out if you're in need of some new make up or skincare. Beware though as parking is a nightmare right now especially with all the construction being done around Melrose.

Yelp
As a "die-hard" fan of Glossier and their products, this location is worth the visit yet bigger than the old location a few years ago (which in fact I almost felt like it was my version of Disneyland but for beauty). Wishing there's one in the Bay Area someday. The service and the experience is completely phenomenal. Of course when you walk in you'll notice a replica of the Universal Studios fountain, instead it's a cute smiley face. Store was clean, and the store associates are happy to help with what you're looking for (e.g. finding shade range, make a return, etc.). I went there twice during my little vacation weekend in LA; Lani and Lindzay helped me a lot with some of the items I'm looking for, as well looking for a shade of their Stretch Balm concealer. Overall, it's definitely a Glossi-slay!!

Yelp
This flagship store is massive, spacious and gorgeously pink. The ambiance is a minimalist dream and easy to shop with all products on display. The service is very attentive, quick and personalized. I come here on occasion to restock my favorite items. Parking is not great however as you have to park on the street and find a proper spot where you won't get ticketed. Glossier has great products but they are slightly over priced and there are dupes available for a fraction of the cost, but if you are loyal to the brand, it's worth a visit.
google avatar

Melanie N.

Yelp
Don't park in the neighborhoods that require permits because they won't hesitate to ticket your ass. There might be a structure nearby you'll have to pay for parking in. Long wait to get in the store on the weekend. The employees were nice enough to hand out free boxed water though. Once in the lobby, the employee in there let people who came in after me go ahead of me. Wack. I got up and let myself in. The selection is what you'll find on the website aside from the limited edition Glossier phone mirror keychain. I had to stop by for a last minute gift for a friend. Gen G in Cake is the way to go. Expect a wait to receive your order that you place with any of the Glossier associates walking around with a tablet. Worth coming here if you want the keychain and photo ops.

Yelp
My favorite store always and forever ! I go here whenever I'm feeling down and pick up one item to add to my collection

Yelp
First time being here. Inside was different and it looked amazing. Love their product that's why I wanted to visit here. Downside was finding parking it was horrible. Pretty sure we spent 30+ minutes looking for parking. I rated it a 2.5/3 because we passed literally 5 employees and none of them approach us to see if we needed help or to explain how you would go about to purchasing a product. I believe I was inside for more than twenty minutes + looking around and trying to see which product I wanted and still no one approached me. Until I approached one of the employee to explain to me how to go about buying their item. Yes, I did end up purchasing their product as I do love their product. But I'm disappointed that the employees were unhelpful and unwelcoming...
google avatar

Jenn C.

Yelp
Apologies to the rep who helped me, I forgot his name ‍ he was awesome. Totally understood my skincare needs for me but also considered my age. It was super important to get products that addressed surface dryness and hydration going into the warmer weather season. He recommended a few items that would be perfect. What's even better? I can take it traveling without having to transfer into other containers. Most items are TSA approved! The products are for display and testing only. There's multiple of the same products out as the store can get busy. When you're ready, either snap a pic or remember the product name. You will let one of the reps know and they will ring you up. Either continue to walk around the store or lounge in the smiley face foyer while they call out your name. They hand you your purchase in their signature shopping bag

Yelp
Store: Service- the staff is so sweet! I talked to a girl and she apologized because a promo code didn't work in store (which was totally fine bc I still wanted my products!)but by the way she apologized I knew she's dealt with many Karens before but she was just so sweet! The store is so big! And I love it because their last store was always so crowded and this one is still crowded but it's not as bad because it's huge! Cafe: Their hidden cafe is just such a gem! I loved all the drinks I've tried and they're all delicious! It's limited edition and different than the original Alfred menu. They're pastries are also delicious! Service- was okay, nothing special

Jasmine S.

Yelp
Decadent for absolutely no reason but I love it. Well manicured store, products to try and friendly staff. The only make up store I've been in with it on lobby and fountain, insane.
google avatar

Johanna S.

Yelp
Very nice and large space in the heart of Melrose. Loved the shopping experience and how nice all the staff is. It doesn't feel like a store but more like a fun place to hang out and try things.
google avatar

Karen T.

Yelp
Wow this shop itself is an experience. I stopped after I noticed the large installation in the front door with the fountain. I'm a huge fan of Glossier's products so it was such a treat to try everything! I took off one star because the service doesn't reflect the grand design of the space. I was greeted when I entered the store. But while I was browsing, the staff ignored me when I asked for more information about a product and pursued to help a different customer instead. Lots of staff just watching you try on the products which is a bit uncomfortable.. I recommend stopping by to see this store in person, though I probably won't come back and continue ordering online instead.
google avatar

Isabella T.

Yelp
This is the first Glossier store I've visited so I don't have any prior baseline on what these are supposed to be like but--wow, the Melrose location really blew me away. Firstly, the place is beautiful both inside and out. There is a giant Glossier sign on the side of the pink building which is honestly hard to miss and is super inviting. Then, when you walk in, there is a very nice entrance area with a bronze globe in the center of some seating steps around it. There is so much space and so many products to try. I frankly only came to find a lipstick but ended up trying so many more things. I love how they have everything on display and have mirrors with very nice lighting to be able to see how things would look on yourself. I appreciated how orderly it was and how they have many disposable tools so that you can try all the products while still keeping hygiene. All the employees are super nice and attentive of all your needs without being overbearing or making you feel surveilled --which I find is a problem in other make up stores. I purchased an Ultralip in the shade Cachet which was just super moisturizing and added a shiny, natural looking dark red/brown tint to my lips. I also tried their Boy Brow gel which has a very subtle tint and helps keeps your eyebrow hairs in place after drawing them in. Loved this too! When you want to pay you just get one of the employees and place your order/pay on an iPad after which they instruct you to wait by the globe while they prepare the order. This was such a fun, lively, bright store! It has probably been one of the best ones I've visited. For parking, there are a few spots of 2 hour paid parking around the corner and I'm sure a lot more street parking a little farther away. Had a great experience and will definitely be coming back in the future to try more products and restock on the ones I've already grown to love.

Yelp
I have wanted to come here for so long, and it was no disappointment! The inside was so gorgeous and aesthetically pleasing. The employees were so welcoming and kind. The guy who helped me out was so nice, I forgot his name. We waited for our order for probably like 2 mins. The reason I took a star away was just because of the construction in front and the parking was far.
google avatar

Yelp
Go in and ask for HERO- He is the best and is so good at color matching ! I went in with zero makeup routine and he walked me through everything I needed! He color matched me perfectly and hyped me up so much! I left feeling sooo confident !!!!
google avatar

Jasmine P.

Yelp
Such a cute location in the middle of all the cool shops on Melrose! You are greeted by one of the glossier employees to let you know how everything works! It's like a beauty wonderland! They have all of their products on display and also there's samples everywhere to try! There's also a sink where you can wash your hands before you sample anything. Once you order with one of the employees, you wait a few minutes and they call your name and hand you your order in a cute pink Glossier bag! There's metered parking on Melrose place!
google avatar

Sophie B.

Yelp
I've been a long time fan of glossier products but had only ever shopped online but let me tell you going to the store is a while other experience. If you love glossier you NEED to visit this store on your next trip to West Hollywood. The store isn't you're typical ulta or Sephora. There are stations to try all of the products and when you're done the staff comes in to make sure everything is clean and sanitized for the next person. When you like a product, just take a photo of it and show it to an associate when you're ready to check out. Everyone was super nice and helpful. You also don't need an appointment just walk in! Not only is it a great store with great products, but it's also fun to take photos in front of all the cute products and mirrors. When we got our products, they included a bunch of freebies like stickers and samples. Thanks glossier!
google avatar

Melody C.

Yelp
I brought my daughters right after Christmas. I got there at opening and easily found street parking. The reviews were mixed on customer service but we wanted to try out their products in person. Each and every staff member was smiling and helpful; there was a greeter at the entrance who explained how it all worked and gave us a pencil and paper. Other staff would demo or suggest various products. We found them enthusiastic and engaged. We bought several items and now feel familiar with their line. Can't wait for them to roll into Sephora so we don't need to make the long drive!
google avatar

Sarah E.

Yelp
Really fun experience and great store, perfect for a girls day or a trip with friends. Almost like an art museum. You order your product with one of the sales associates and then they bring it out to you from the back. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. Bonus: try the Alfred coffee right next store. The Glossier pink latte is to die for. Super cute for photo ops also.
google avatar

Bridget F.

Yelp
We are regular Glossier customers. My mom and I love coming into the store to look around and buy new items. The employees are usually very nice but today was totally different. We already knew what we wanted to get so we quickly checked out and we're waiting for our order to come out. While we were waiting for order we decided to browse around, and we got three employees ask us if we needed anything and the whole time while we were browsing they were staring us down and making us feel extremely uncomfortable. It felt like they thought we were somehow going to steal something? This made me feel extremely anxious and uncomfortable. How am I supposed to feel comfortable and want to spend money in your store when your employees are staring down their well paying customers? I'm extremely disappointed. This makes me not want to come back to your store.
google avatar

Miso W.

Yelp
So excited to finally visit Glossier in LA again! As someone who came during their grand opening and got their special tote bags, the store's interior design has changed so much since then & there's been so many new additions to their collection! The main purpose of this trip, however, was definetly the Glossier y2k phone mirror keychain ($18), that's limited to the LA store only! I was afraid they might not have it in stock but was so glad to see it available!
google avatar

Erin L.

Yelp
Came in today for the second time ever, and was helped by a very happy, welcoming (masked) face. Deanna made amazing recommendations, and helped me order an entire awesome skincare routine along with my makeup purchases. I also had my 11 year old in tow and she made a specialty surprise bag of samples and birthday balm dot com. Honestly as a new customer, the customer service alone is what will me me a lifelong fan girl. Also, I have VERY sensitive skin, and so far the Glossier products have all not only agreed with my skin, they've improved everything overall. Their makeup is more for the natural look, which feels amazing on. Can't say enough good things about this place. Make sure to hit up their little coffee shop around the corner for Glossier specialty lattes and a "G" raspberry cookie. Thanks again Deanna for absolutely wonderful customer service. I'll be back!
google avatar

Julissa M.

Yelp
Me and a couple of friends were in the store a day ago and we had the best experience! Not only is the location super cute and aesthetically beautiful, but the employees were all very very nice and helpful! I love not having to wait in line but rather being able to checkout with any of the employees! There was a particular worker that was very kind named Jevon, he helped us out with any questions that we had and was so happy to do it! We will definitely be returning!!
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
So cute and aesthetic! The store reminds me of a museum. They carry all their products here and you can sample them in a COVID-safe manner. I loved all their plants and decor and the customer service is A+. You "order" your products with any of the representatives walking around (no physical registers) and they bring them out to you within minutes. Pro tip: I came here on my birthday after having brunch down the street and let the employees know. They gift you with a FREE birthday balm dotcom and tons of samples, so don't be shy to ask! Other notes: - Parking is metered and can be hard to find - They charge 10 cents for bags (and automatically give them to you) so if you don't want one make sure to let them know!
google avatar

Blaise H.

Yelp
I came here yesterday to check out the new location. It was beautiful but one of the girls working ruined the whole experience. She was on top of me the whole time following me around collecting the items i tested from my hands. I was aware of all safety protocols and following them. She made the experience quite stressful so I do not think I will be returning. The old location had a lot friendlier staff.
google avatar

Rebecca F.

Yelp
I don't have a problem with this place. I have brought my 15 year old daughter there tons of times to get products. The salespeople are all super friendly and helpful. It's obviously a cool place to take pictures if you're into that. Sometimes they are out of stuff, but what do you expect, it's a trendy spot. I'm sure we will be back again.
google avatar

Nikki K.

Yelp
The products are 3 stars but the customer experience in the store is easily 5 stars. I bought a ton of stuff online and then wanted to get matched to a skin tint in the store then wound up buying a bunch of stuff in there too. What a stellar experience!! Unfortunately, I did not love quite a few of the items after taking them home. The ones that claim to be "soothing" caused burning and redness and the 2 moisturizers made me peel :( so I went back to the store to do a return, the girl in the front didn't even bat an eyelash, she felt awful that my face was in pain and refunded everything on the spot. I wish people everywhere were as sweet as that young lady!
google avatar

Dani L.

Yelp
I had never heard of this brand before, but I was shopping for a very specific X-mas present that was here. The service was great. The person that helped me was great, and I loved how everything was pink, organized, and spacious. I got a brow flick kit and the 3-pack serum for someone else, but based on my experience, I'll shop there again, and maybe even for myself next time. :)
google avatar

Yelp
Had the best first time at glossier LA ! Was super excited to see the new place after the last LA location shut down because of the pandemic. All products seen inside were testers and were set up nicely with workers continuing to disinfect displays every couple of minutes. I loved being able to test products while still feeling safe as there were disposable lip and face wands to use when testing out products. All employees were very lovely people and Cole, Rachel, and Becca went above and beyond to make my experience at Glossier LA amazing! Everyone there to make your experience the best ! Loved everything about the place and I can't wait to come back again !
google avatar

Jane W.

Yelp
Had a few teenagers with me that wanted to go. I wasn't familiar with their product line, so my review is based on that perspective. Walking in the, the store is an experience for sure. The atmosphere, while modern and vast, was also very inviting and relaxing. The staff , which there seemed to be a lot of (kind of rare these days), were all super friendly. Everyone in our group felt like they could browse, sample, and take their time enjoying the store - without any pressure whatsoever to buy anything. We purchased a few items and the checkout process was fast and easy. There is staff walking around with iPad (or similar) to check out, so no lines etc. Then you wait for them to bring out your purchase from the back. Great service! If you like Glossier products - I'd recommend this store! And from what I learned, you pretty much can only order online (and pay shipping) so take advantage of getting a few things while you are here!

Errisson L.

Yelp
It would be nice if they actually had a number to where you can speak to someone. It's 2023 and this kind of customer service is unacceptable.
google avatar

Celine T.

Yelp
First time visiting the new location today, and the staff were incredibly friendly and informative! I went with a friend and we purchased a few items each, but I noticed my friend received some goodies and I didn't and asked one of the staff members why. They informed me you have to have a purchase of $60+ before tax, so I tried to add another item to get the limited goodies. Which Janelle was super nice about and went ahead to ask her manager, and gave me the goodies without the whole hassle of returning and repurchasing again. Thanks so much, would love to visit again!
google avatar

Jane O.

Yelp
Always fun and of course efficient to be able to try on colors. I love that the staff is friendly and attentive without being pushy, and it's a beautiful store.
google avatar

Kristin F.

Yelp
Had a fantastic experience looking at the assorted items and choosing what I wanted with the amazing male SA but the problem occurred when it was time to retrieve my items from the female SA. She said my name I outstretched my hand and she proceeded to walk past me while directly looking at me. I'm not sure what the deal was but I was literally the only shopper standing in that area. Definitely will be avoiding this location.
google avatar

Amanda G.

Yelp
Omg. What is it? Asshole day? This person at the front check out is awful! Totally rude. I was clueless how this place operates. You walk in browse and then I guess look for someone in a pink jumpsuit and hopefully they will check you out. Next you wait on their steps. At least I think this is how it works since there is no one or signs to explain this to you. I will continue to order online so the girl at the front won't give me her shitty looks with her horrible eyelashes.

Yelp
new super-sized location down the street from the previous small facility. greeted immediately by the friendly gal up front who placed an order for me. the process was quite easy and the products were then delivered by another employee while i waited @ the spacious foyer.

Yelp
Made the trip from Ventura County to color test since no samples are offered. Parking was horrendous. Parking structure around the corner had a sign that said it was full. After circling the blocks a dozen times, gave up. Went to Sephora and purchased Ilia products instead. This was on a Wed around 2:30pm
