Black-Owned Restaurants in North and South Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"A Columbia-based restaurant featured on a local list of black-owned businesses and presented as part of broader efforts to encourage support for black-owned restaurants that often lack access to fundraising, PR, and other resources enjoyed by larger independents." - Erin Perkins

Super cool place. Great deco, cool art on walls. My cucumber margarita was excellent (and so was the second). Good music (jazz, rnb), vibe is super chill. We had apps and drinks and will totally come back next time we're in Columbia.

Google
Eclectic, bohemian vibe. Fantastic cocktails and great draft selection. Our server, Hope, was fantastic and helpful. Normally we would never choose a Philly cheesesteak but did on her recommendation. Truly delicious and large enough to split. Garlic fries were excellent, as well.

Google
I love this place. The atmosphere is perfect and the food always good. Desert, especially cheese cakes are the best. The best place to chill out and spend fun time with friends.

Google
An old and classic place you should visit. Great drinks, delicious foods, and warm people. Higher end, so if you’re dressed up, come here. The bartenders know their drinks and if you are into older cocktails with history, they have those too.

From the atmosphere including surrealist artwork, overhead lighting and a beautiful long aquarium with an small array of fish to the attentive staff and satisfying spread of dishes, I would recommend this spot to anyone swinging through town for a whimsical vibe. Note: If you're ordering from the bar and looking for king cubes, they unfortunately do not have any available, but the drinks are made very well regardless.

The Philly cheese steak is bangin'! The staff is so friendly and the owner is more than happy to come over, recommend some wine and chat for a bit. The decor is sultry and cozy. Great for a large group or a romantic date night. Updated review: Feb 2024. Came here for a drink and an appetizer around 730 on a Saturday evening. Even though it was busy, the service was friendly and prompt and the food was served in a timely manner. We had the duck poutine and it was delicious. This cocktail bar continues to be one of our go-to spots for a sexy date-night that boasts an impressive wine menu and satisfying comfort food.

Google
Just a few words to gush about our server last night. She memorizes orders, listens, and is gorgeously hippie. The door never stayed clear and they kept turning tables and were seemingly in the weeds, however the stress never showed for our server. She is a true professional.

Tara Jean T.

Google
My favorite place for date night and girls night. The staff is friendly enough to even come solo. Unique wine options, and a diverse menu! The decor and lighting are the best final touches ✨✨

Yelp
The atmosphere and artwork is second to none! The servers are extremely nice and attentive. First visit went well, and I can't wait for the next go around.

Yelp
We came here for dinner and drinks on a date night. The environment is nice and cozy and when you walk in you see a beautiful dessert display! We of course had to try a slice of peanut butter cake. My husband loved it (he picked the dessert). I picked our drinks and they have an excellent drink variety. We started our meal with the queso tots and they were delicious! Wiped them out! I ordered the lobster mac and cheese and he got the philly cheesesteak. He absolutely raved about his sandwich and said it was the best he ever had. I wouldn't order the lobster mac again but it was presented beautifully. I look forward to going back and trying the mussels. I saw many of those orders coming out and definitely looked so good! Great spot to check out for drinks, desserts, and a bite!

Yelp
The vibes, the food and service was amazing! I love this unique menu and cola needs moody, vibey places like this

Yelp
I read alot of reviews about the cream sauce on the mussels but I like pesto and decided to give it a try. I'm delighted to inform you that it was delicious to the very last drop! I'm not kidding the broth was so flavorful I ate it all like a bowl of soup. The fries were thin crispy perfection and the entire portion was enough to fill me up. This is definitely going on my favorite meals list!

Yelp
They have a phenomenal cheesesteak, and excellent Gaston type food. I am glad it's not "every thing is fried" type of place. Their drinks are really ambitious, and it's a great place to take a date around dinner. Unfortunately no military discount is offered.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this spot while in Columbia! Lots of good small plates and drinks. Excellent service! I would definitely return!

Yelp
Service was very good, we a had a gal who was on her first day however the senior staff was helping. Drinks were fantastic and highly recommend. Snacks aka foodies were good also. This was a nice little find with a retro vibe that isn't the new trendy hip stuff. 9/10 will definitely be back when in town.
google avatar

Rick T.

Yelp
One of Columbia's oldest running restaurants that has a killer drink menu located in the heart of five points. Featuring a food menu just as unique as the restaurant.
google avatar

Lydia L.

Yelp
Goat's is a cool spot in the trendy Five Points area. The vibe is chill, but not dive-y. The drink list is extensive, mostly classics, but a few that were either originals or too obscure for me to recognize. The bartender very helpfully recommended a couple of drinks--I had the Screaming Viking and the Scarlett O'Hara. Both were simple, but well balanced and exactly the type of thing I was looking for. There's also a very good wine and beer selection, and several wine flight options. I can't say anything blew my socks off, but I would definitely come back!

Austin K.

Yelp
Chill old school ambiance. Good place for drink before dinner or night cap. Food is ok, have heard alot of good things but always average when I order.

Yelp
Real nice! Very creative menu, small but very creative Started of with the Hot Tots. Very good flavor the Goat Cheese blend worked well. Went for the Duck Taco's. Had great flavor only critique they were a little dry, could have use a little moisture. Merin behind the bar was awesome We talked food and o mentioned the Farro salad which you don't see on a menu often and she brought me a sample! Thanks Merin! Look forward to a return

Yelp
Great vibe and decor. I was pleasantly surprised when we showed up here upon someone's recommendation. The food is overall pretty good. I love that they have a good salad and vegetarian options (black bean burger). They also have a great selection of beer, wine and cocktails. The desert was amazing! This is a nice little kept secret in the 5-points area.

Yelp
If you want AMAZING service, a unique and well thought out menu, then this is the place to go. First date, 10 year anniversary, or just a night out with friends; the warm and relaxing atmosphere will have you returning to this Five Points Legend over and over again. Don't forget to check out their desert display!

Yelp
Perfect place for date night! I have been wanting to stop by Goat's for post-dinner drinks for a while now and I'm so glad we made it. The drink menu has sooo many options to choose from, including wine flights and coffees. Our server was sweet and laid back, which matched the vibe of the entire place. The owner was behind the bar and you could just tell that he loves what he does, and I enjoyed watching him make drinks from our table. Drinks were delicious! My boyfriend had the aloe Vera cocktail and was amazed that it tasted exactly like an aloe drink that you'd get from the store, but with a little punch. We will definitely be adding this to our date night rotation!

Yelp
Stopped by here because my SIL was looking for an Espresso martini dupe for the one she had in Mexico. My brother searched and we found Goat's! Upon entering, it had a nice vibe to it. We were approached and we confirmed that they had the drink. They did. He told us to sit where we would like. We did! Our waitress was phenomenal! She was attentive, funny, and well versed on the drink and food menu. We knew what we wanted and my god did they deliver! They were absolutely delicious! My SIL left a happy camper and now I have a new favorite drink and spot to get them!
google avatar

Yelp
Opie is awesome! He's the owner and was the bartender for me! The service for me was expedient and cordial! Food is extraordinary and yummy! I had the smoked salmon crostini which were awesome! Then I had the duck tacos! Yummmy! Ambience is cool calming eclectic! You deserve 5 stars!! Thank you!

Yelp
If there ever was a uniquely different yet very pleasant place, it's Goat's. The interior décor of Goat's is something else. It's a very old time but in a way to me, refreshingly different with a certain new flare about it. As Goat's declares it's a wine and craft cocktail bar with the same atmosphere as was had by the owner's grandfather. It has a great selection of wines and signature cocktails. The menu has some very interesting takes like Buffalo Oysters with blue cheese and a Buffalo hot sauce, an Andouille Hot Dog, Poutine, and a Stuffed Quail. For me, I went for their PEI Mussels with a most delicious pesto sauce and also their Pan Seared Duck Breast with confit potatoes, carrot and orange gastrique. Indeed, everything was delicious. The only downside foodwise is their very limited menu, but then again, it's primarily an upscale cocktail, beer, and drinking establishment.

Yelp
This place is a VIBE! Great ambiance and great food. Service was perfect and am adding this place to my list of go to places in Columbia. Good place for a quick date night or pregame. Can make it casual or a little fancy depending on what you want. One of the more unique bar/restaurants in Columbia.

Yelp
Great surprise. Was looking primarily for food, and found a gem of a bistro bar. Eclectic setting with funky vibe attracting all ages and cultures... quite fun for a date or friend outing. Ordered appetizers mainly... the Brussel Sprouts were so good we ordered another. I was disappointed by the mussels, but could have been a fluke. It's the only reason I didn't give it a 5. My biggest surprise was the Philly sandwich. Growing up in Philly, I can't help to sample out of state versions always disappointed. Goat's with it's namesake cheese was special... it didn't attempt to imitate and created something all their own. If you love steak and melted cheese, go for it. Last but not least was the great service and the amazing menu of cocktails. Will definitely come back. PS: don't come here if you want a big table and a lot of room to spread out... this is quaint, cozy and intimate. Loved it.

Yelp
Goat's is a Columbia treasure. I've been a customer since the 90's when it was called Goatfeathers and was connected to Intermezzo (r.I.p.) next door. This place has absolutely the best ambiance of any establishment in the midlands. It's the only place I want to have a cocktail with my wife. No TVs on the wall, perfect lighting, perfect art and furnishings, and great music. The food is pretty great too. I wish they would expand the menu a bit, but whatevs... this place is such a treasure. Update: service has really gone down hill. Our waitress was much more interested in drinking wine, taking shots, and hanging out with her friends than waiting on us. Extremely rude and disingenuous. Also, we ordered 2 medium rare burgers and received two over-cooked pucks. Very disappointing. Hopefully it was just a bad night and an Awful waitress.

Yelp
This place should get more love. Great spot with the best martinis and mussels in town

Yelp
I can't say enough about the lovely experience I had at Goat's. I came across the establishment because they were listed as a participant of Black Restaurant Week; I was even more excited to know they are also black owned. SERVICE: I have never gad such a knowledgeable bar tender! She was amazing! So conversational, genuine, and knowledgeable about the menu. She gave my friend I great menu suggestions and consistently checked in. Such a pleasure to interact and converse with. She will for sure be the main reason I continue to patronize this establishment. FOOD Another awesome plus in this dining experience. I ordered the lobster Mac and cheese. Every bite had a piece of lobster and it was perfectly seasoned. The cheese to pasta ratio was perfect. My friend ordered the chicken Philly. She said it was great, also not overly seasoned. I also ordered the crab dip as an appetizer. No fake crab meat in this appetizer! Lump crab was on my crostini every time I dipped it. This is a gem of a place! The camaraderie amongst the staff is demonstrated throughout the experience. Definitely worth becoming a regular.

Yelp
Great food Service Wine Staff Owner Will return on my next visit to Five Points! This place is memorable.

Kate R.

Yelp
Although the place is very nice and everyone was very pleasant, the food was not very good on the day when we went there. We got crab dip, which was extremely salty. It was served with salty baguette. The entrees and sandwiches were very salty and over seasoned. Recommend that Chef check what's going on in the kitchen. We had a good time anyway.
google avatar

Korinda E.

Yelp
No college kids! Yay! Now that's out of the way, the wine list is amazing (1/2 off bottles on Tuesdays) and two pages of Martinis with solid Gin choices. The service was helpful and attentive and the atmosphere will keep you looking around checking things out. The Philly Cheesesteak, Black Bean Burger with the Duck Poutine made the night. Awesome food!!
google avatar

Asia B.

Yelp
This place has been on my list since forever. I didn't take any pictures. It's small but has a very intimate vibe. Pictures lights good music. There is a small menu. The drinks were awesome the food delicious. We split the crab dip, and both had the Philly chesse steak. Our server was really sweet and did a great job. Will definitely come back
google avatar

Yelp
I've always liked goats but my last 2 visits were my last for a while. The once friendly owner/bartender seems burned out. It felt like we were an imposition on both visits. He should considering hiring more bartenders so he can get a little break. Everyone deserves to feel welcome. If you don't, find another place.

Yelp
Called to place a to go order. The customer service was really good. Their menu shifts, but I am not sure at what rate. We asked about the fried oysters and that wasn't being served at the time. We went with the Philly cheesesteaks. Thank goodness 5 Points wasn't packed bc we found parking fairly easy. I loved the vibe this place gives! Pick up was a breeze; there really was just a minute or so before they came from the back with my food. I did inquire about the desserts but the nice lady told me that they had been sitting for over more than a couple of days. So, that was a no for me. The Phillies were really good! The meat was seasoned well and the and it was cheese throughout. I would definitely return for another philly!

T R.

Yelp
The best spot in Columbia, period! The menu is interesting and there is something for everyone. Cool ambiance and friendly service. Our go to night out place.

Yelp
Good ambiance, great server, delicious muscles. I would definitely return i didn't find another place like it in Columbia

Yelp
I'm a lady of simple tastes. Give me some good wine, tasty bites, and nice company, and I'm set for the evening! I found all of that and more at Goat's in Five Points. The atmosphere of this wine and cocktail bar is very cool. It's cozy and well lived in, but also sophisticated. Great for date nights, biz meetings, or just gathering with friends. The menu has a little bit of everything. I tried the buffalo fried oysters, duck confit poutine, and PEI mussels with cream sauce (they also offer pesto). To start, the oysters were a pleasant surprise. I'm not a big blue cheese fan, but it wasn't overpowering. The poutine was really tasty if you like French fries drenched in gravy and topped with cheese curds. I do and I did! The mussels also hit the spot. Of course, the best part of mussels is always the broth and you can bet I slopped it up with the bread on the side. The owner, Opie, was around and very kind. I can see why this is a neighborhood fave and would definitely come back the next time I'm in Columbia. Prices are very reasonable for what you get, too!

Brandon S.

Yelp
Great food, great drinks. Good atmosphere, especially for a nice date night. I'm definitely going to be coming back
google avatar

Yelp
This is place is worth a visit. Cool atmosphere with many regulars yet visitors feel welcome also. I visited during a work trip and felt right at home. Staff was very attentive, bar was very quick with drinks. The waitress offered nice suggestions. All was good. We tried the hot tots for an appetizer. They were delicious. I had the Lobster Mac and Cheese and savored every bite. I cant wait to stop in again.
google avatar

Catherine T.

Yelp
Best vibes for a first date! I can absolutely believe they have lasted as long as they have!

Khendra J.

Yelp
Great food and drinks very chilled vibes I always recommend for my friends to come and enjoy
google avatar

Robin B.

Yelp
The ambiance is what sets this place apart: it's moody but not intimidating. It's intimate, but has seating options for singles to large groups. The service is fantastic as the knowledge and approachability of all staff is top tier, especially for wine recommendations. If you need a snack or a full course meal, chef OP has you covered. This place is a gem and whether Im dressed down or up, I always feel comfortable. This place is a gem!
google avatar

Gregory B.

Yelp
Great food, great service, all around great vibe. Highly recommend. The tater tots were amazing, I feel like I could've eaten several bowls. Also got a Philly cheesesteak and lobster Mac, both as expected were incredibly good.
google avatar

Vanessa K.

Yelp
Great experience! We got the Philly cheese steaks and they were great! A huge variety of drinks! Cool atmosphere.

Clayton M.

Yelp
This place has some of my favorite ambiance in Columbia, I love the lighting. The waitress was super helpful with drink ordering and gave me a great recommendation. Definitely will be back to try the food!
google avatar

Yelp
Who doesn't love a Friday Happy Hour special? Especially when it's $20 bottles of wine!? Add to that some delicious food options and this place is a local's favorite haunt. (Don't let Five Points scare you.)

Brie R.

Yelp
Don't miss the Philly cheesesteak, espresso martini, and incredible staff! Perfect spot for a romantic date or happy hour with friends.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been going to Goat's and it's predecessor Goatfeathers for at least two decades and have never been disappointed in the food, the staff, or the drinks. The drink menu is extensive, with cocktails you won't find anywhere else in Columbia. Even the trendy craft cocktail bars don't have the extra since list of cocktails to experience. Their draft beers are also unique and aren't your run-of-the-mill restaurants. The food is fantastic. It doesn't rotate weekly like some places but that's because it doesn't need to. It's that good. Really got in the habit of the duck poutine a couple of years ago and it's fantastic. The crab dip is also fantastic. Of the entrees, I'm always torn between the Philly Cheesesteak, which is a great go-to meal to the rich and creamy lobster mac to my more recent obsession with the beef bourgogne which melts in your mouth. The staff is friendly, skilled, and accommodating. The atmosphere is dark and quaint, and the closet thing you'll find to a pub in Columbia. The clientele is usually older and the college kids who frequent the Five Points area and is a nice retreat. Its booths are intimate and perfect for a date or intimate conversation but they also have accomodations for larger groups and a great bar if your just running in for a drink or two. Also a fantastic place for amazing desserts so even if you have dinner elsewhere, the desserts alone are worth a stop in for. Truly one of my favorite places in Columbia for a pint and a meal.

Yelp
It started out with a google search....for the best Phillys in town! And somehow my husband and I missed the small detail that their kitchen didn't open until 5pm. We walked in, and it was a very small but unique atmosphere! I can't compare it to any other place in Cola. We went on a Friday, and since we were waiting for the kitchen to open we decided to look at their desserts () and stumbled upon a drink special! On Fridays, they have red/white/rose bottles for $20! So while we waited we got our drink on. Since my husband and I were on a time constraint (he works night shift) we asked for our food to be packed up to go. The hostess and manager were so nice about everything. THEY EVEN COOKED OUR FOOD EARLY. As soon as one of the kitchen staff came in he started preparing it (about 20 mins early). We were so grateful! Our food was delicious. And the philly is meant to be messy! You're supposed to eat the philly over the fries so that when all the stuff falls out it makes the fries frites! So smart! Delicious! And definitely recommend to EVERYONE.
google avatar

Eleanor B.

Yelp
Recently went to Goat's for the first time in 10 years. Had the duck tacos which were delicious. Had a fancy cocktail (can't remember which one) and that was also delicious. I've always loved it from food to drink, ambiance to service. My only wish is for the name to have stayed the same. Oh well - at least for us nostalgic types you can still see the Alice in Wonderland print that references Goatfeather's in the bathroom.
google avatar

Samantha A.

Yelp
Still one of my favorite places in Columbia! We go for drinks and dinner or snacks regularly. I love their wine flights and the Ginger Martini. This past weekend, we were doing some shopping and stopped in for a few drinks and apps. We tried the Smoked Salmon Crostini and the Duck Confit Tacos, both for the first time. They were amazing! The duck confit tacos were scrumptious and flavored well. We were absolutely blown away by the Smoked Salmon Crostini! Delightfully smoky salmon, lemon tarragon cream, and black caviar on top of a crusty piece of French bread. We will definitely add that to our permanent rotation. Our other favorites include the Poutine, Mussels and Frites, Beef Bourguignon, and Lobster Mac and Cheese. They also still make the best Philly in town. Goat's still has the sexy atmosphere, great hospitality, and level of cool that lots of bars aspire to but never achieve. If you haven't been, GO!
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful food. The service is fantastic. Goat's is a great neighborhood bar in five points. The ambiance is very nice with interesting art and a huge fish tank. Best of all you will get great wine recommendations if you want to try something new.

Samantha L.

Yelp
Always a great time at Goat's! Opie is so personable and the atmosphere, food and drinks are wonderful!!!

Yelp
I really wanted to love Goat's, because their food menu looked great online. We came specifically for dinner, because we mistakenly thought it was a restaurant, but turns out, it's more of a cocktail/wine bar. There are a handful of tables and booths, and some wicked cool art lined the walls. The ambience is pretty dark and mysterious. Generally, it's a good, intimate date spot for a drink and some nibbles in Five Points. The menu options are a step above your typical bar fare. We ordered the duck confit poutine, lobster Mac n cheese, and duck tacos. My favorite was definitely the poutine (fries layered with duck, gravy, and melted cheese). The meat in my duck tacos was dry even with the aioli, and the mango salsa was pretty weak. The lobster Mac n cheese was a bit dry too. They prop the door open, so cigarette smoke from smokers outside the bar billows in. We sat in a booth near the door, so the smoke was pretty distracting. When we asked for the door to be closed, our server nicely obliged. Not too long later, the door was propped open again, so next time, we know to choose seating closer toward the back of the bar.
google avatar

Alfie B.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I have had Goat's on our list for a while now. Finally made it out here on a Wednesday night. It wasn't too crowded with plenty of seating. We didn't realize that this place is more of a bar/tavern vs restaurant. The ambiance in here was very dark, like almost hard to even read the menu dark. Service here was friendly. We ordered the poutine, duck tacos, and lobster mac and cheese. Poutine was definitely Americanized, but I enjoyed the gravy, and it had a nice balance of flavors. The two duck confit tacos looked very sad, especially on that huge plate. We both agreed they were pretty dry as well. Lobster Mac and cheese was average to pretty good, with very small bits of lobster strewn throughout. As a place to get drinks/hang out, this place seems pretty good (except when they leave the door propped open and all the cigarette smoke pours in). But wouldn't order food here again. I think they're trying to be too ambitious with their menu.
