Four Chicago-Area Restaurant Shutters to Know - Eater Chicago

"Goddess and the Baker, the local mini-chain from the Goddess and the Grocer folks, announced that its Navy Pier location is permanently closed. “The Goddess team has been attempting to work with the Navy Pier Management on acceptable terms and conditions but negotiations were unfortunately not welcomed and ultimately, terms have not been reached,” ownership wrote on Facebook. Its locations at 225 N. LaSalle Street and 33 S. Wabash Avenue remain open, and ownership writes that “we will be announcing some exciting news on a new store opening in Chicago soon” as well as a Milwaukee location." - Daniel Gerzina

I read all of the bad reviews after getting my food. I don’t know about any of them but I had a good experience. Bread and toppings were fresh. A little overpriced for what you get but all in all a good place to grab a quick bite.

Google
It's 9 AM and I go to the goddess and the baker for a croissant and an ice coffee and some whole milk for my son as we are waiting for the children's museum to be open. the milk that was on display was not refrigerated but I believe it should have been. So I asked the attendant about this and she responded she didn't know and gave me milk from a different source behind the counter. She to charge me $11 for the three items so I asked for an itemized receipt and she said she couldn't provide this and also claimed she didn't charge me for the coffee because they were out. Out of coffee?!! I don't know if she didn't feel like making a coffee or she wanted to pocket the extra four dollars not sure what the situation was but a very bad experience overall. I asked her to refund the charge for the coffee and she said she did but was unable to provide me any kind of receipt. All around a poor experience and frankly, sketchy.

Google
Very bad experience on October 28th. Ordered two sandwiches, one hot chocolate, and one Americano. Hot chocolate and Americano took twenty minutes to prepare. My wife's sandwich had a large spot of mold on the bread. After I showed the mold to a manager, he promised to issue a refund to my card. It is November 5th and I have not received a refund. I have attached a picture I took of the sandwich before turning it in.

Google
I've come here twice and ordered the chopped salad. The food is great but it takes at least 15-20 minutes for my order. I'm usually the only person or first person to order with no one waiting for their drinks or food.

Mike K

Google
Went to the one at Navy Pier. It wasn't busy, yet still had to flag down staff from playing on phone to get service. Ordered a coffee. Went to the end to put in sugar and they were out. Flag down staff on phone again to ask for sugar. She informed me they don't carry sugar and only sweet and low. When I asked her what usually goes into the empty container where sugar usually is she informed me she was not sure. Places like this need to go out of business.

Juliana Sticha

Google
I asked for a large cappuccino (listed on the menu), she said they didn't have them. Then charged the wrong price for the small. I asked what she'd recommend for breakfast, she said they didn't have that. But, it's a bakery..? Cappuccino was gross too.

Morsal Tahouni

Google
Took my son here for a chocolate milk amd a bagel after playing at navy pier. Guy behimd the counter was rude. Stated "line starts over therr" after i had already been waiting in line for five minutes. Then ignored me when i stated that and served the person behind me. Needs customer service training.

Google
This place is a mixed bag. I have had some very good drinks here, but I have also had some drinks that are poorly executed (I'm looking at you Horchata Iced Coffee). There are few things in life that are worse than paying $6 for a sub par specialty drink.

Yelp
Another bakery review for another Goddess location! This is a great pit stop for breakfast or an afternoon pick-me-up, whether you've been shopping-till-you-drop on the Mag Mile, are killing time before dinner, or are simply catching up with some friends. I happened to pass by on a Sunday afternoon- it was pretty full but not too busy, and I couldn't resist trying one of their many pastries. Everything looked so delicious that no matter what you pick, you get the feeling you've made both the right and wrong choice! I opted for a drip coffee and the cinnamon cruffin this time around. The cruffin was an addicting triple threat of a cinnamon roll, croissant, and muffin all wrapped in one. The layers were flaky and as thin as tissue paper, and the pastry was just lightly sweet. The drip coffee was brewed very well, and made for a flavorful pairing with the pastry. I enjoyed the visit and recommend stopping by if you're in the area!

Yelp
Truly fantastic. Was absolutely packed on a Saturday morning but my online order was ready right on time. On top of that, the food was delicious. Ham, egg and cheese biscuit was huge and full of unique flavors because of the jam. The hash browns were standard but also good. Unique cold drink menu including flavored lemonades. Friendly staff, delicious food, reasonable price. I'll absolutely be back next time I am in Chicago.

Yelp
Fantastic drinks, super cute space, and carrot cake to die for. Every time I come here I try a new specialty drink- this time was the apple butter oat latte- and I have yet to be disappointed. Lines can be long but service is always great... and did I mention to carrot cake? I never leave without a slice- divine.

Yelp
Came in for a quick breakfast before starting our day. The place was pretty busy on a weekday morning but the line moved fast, orders were brought out quickly and we were able to find a place to sit. I tried the butter croissant and it was very flaky and delicious. Also had an iced latter. The espresso was strong and really good. Would come back.

Yelp
Came in on a late Tuesday morning. I was staying at a hotel nearby and wanted a small breakfast before heading out. The staff at the counter was friendly. Service was quick. It was a cute space, lots of seating and would've been nice to sit awhile, but took my order to go. I got the breakfast sandwich, it was good. I also ordered the mango matcha latte (hot instead of iced) and it was pretty darn good. I'd come back for that! It was pretty cold out but the sleeve my sandwich was in was kind of insulated so it was still warm when I finally sat down to eat it, which was nice.

Yelp
I could eat at Goddess and the Baker every day. The menu is so eclectic and fresh, you can't go wrong with item. While it's always crowded, service is always quick. The pastries are a must! The food is very picture worthy, your phone will definitely "eat first"!
google avatar

Yelp
A hidden Goddess and the Baker that is worth the visit. It has a surprisingly large interior that was bustling. The quality and service are what you expect, so if you're in the area and looking for a place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee then this may be it.

Yelp
Went here for a little morning date, hoping to make up for our bad food experience the night before and thankfully this was good! Of all my time in Chicago I don't think I had ever visited a goddess and the baker. There was a bit of a line and it was busy but it moved fast and we were able to get a table. My husband got a caramel latte and a breakfast sandwich, I got a cold brew with plain cold foam and avocado toast. They have a ton of fun specialty drinks but I was wanting something more simple! My husband loved that his breakfast sandwich had a cheese pull. I liked that my avocado toast had lots of arugula, one of my fave leafy greens, and it was super fresh. The croissants and other baked stuff looked awesome too. A bit pricey but not crazily so. Would come back!

Yelp
I had an early start and wanted to have breakfast by 8:30 a.m. before heading to a business meeting. This location of Goddess and the Baker was just a block away from my hotel. I arrived right before 8:00 a.m., and the dining area was already pretty full, with only a few tables left. However, there was no line to order, and the food came out quickly. I ordered an iced mango matcha drink and the hash brown breakfast sandwich. The sandwich had a sunny-side-up egg that burst when I took a bite--good thing I had a tray to catch all the runny yolk. The bread was soft but maintained its structure. Overall, very delicious!
google avatar

Jahnavi Y.

Yelp
Surprisingly fast service - despite how busy they are at times, the lines move quickly and I was able to snag a table after waiting for 10 min. Food was amazing!! I loved the shakshuka and caprese danishes, so unique and the perfect texture. The salmon bagel was a deconstructed version with separate ingredients that you assemble. I surprisingly preferred this as I was able to choose how much cream cheese, salmons, and dill to add and create the bagel to my preferences. I also got a matcha latte which was well-made.
google avatar

Terri K.

Yelp
Yummy specialty coffee & tea drinks. Great selection of gluten free baked goods too. The gf almond mocha chip muffin was decadent. The almond cranberry cherry bar was delicious too. We came back twice in a day for drinks & treats. Cute ambiance. Great friendly service too.

Yelp
Beautiful space with a warm welcoming energy. (Would suggest they provide some guidance for guests on how to line up...there's lines come from both directions) They are getting condensation on their ac duct...so it may drip on you when you're ordering. (Can they hang something from the ceiling or wrap the pipe to help with this?) All employees I encountered, from the order taker to my drink maker and the cleaner of tables smiled a warm and engaging and pleasant smile. I loved the sandwich offerings and how they mixed/matched the ingredients together. It was nice to see multiple bread options...including naan on the menu. I didn't try to customize, so, I'm not sure if you can mix/match. Will have to try that next time.

Yelp
I was surprised with how fast the servers got our food out! We ordered at the cashier and went outside to find a table. We had a table of 8 and within just 5-10minutes, all our food was ready! I got the avocado toast which was pretty good. They really stacked it up with so much arugula, so I loved it. I also got a honey latte and mocha almond muffin, which were a bit lack luster. The espresso wasn't super strong so the latte mainly tasted like milk. The muffin also just broke apart so easily with a small touch. All in all this was a good experience since it was the first thing I ate in Chicago!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
Large and roomy, with plenty of space to work and good WiFi. The music is pretty loud, so bring headphones. The food and drink is excellent and they even have nice drink glasses for people eating "here".
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
This place is great! Quite busy, but plenty of seating because they don't allow you to claim a table before ordering. Huge selection of baked good and breakfast options! Lots of specialty drink options, everything was so tasty, I don't think you could go wrong with anything here! It's tastefully decorated and nice and warm during the winter!
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Cute ambiance, tons of options, good service! I liked the avocado toast and most recent coffee. The first marshmallow one was a little too sweet, but if you like super crazy sugary ones this one has them! Plus they have regular coffee so a win win.
google avatar

Yelp
As I travel, there are places I wish I had back home. This cafe is one of them. All manner of elaborate pastries and an extensive coffee menu. There's breakfast with plenty of savory options yum! Outdoor seating that's nicely separated from the road. Different types of indoor seating including bar-style facing outside (my favorite). I had a delicious Vietnamese-style iced coffee and a pastry that was a cross between a croissant and a pain au chocolat, with much more chocolate than I expected (but somehow, not over-sweet- just grab some napkins!) Goddess & the Baker is a small local chain with multiple locations, I only tried this spot, but will look for the others next time I'm in Chicago. It's a short walk from the Chicago River promenade. Chicago in summer has a lovely cafe culture, echos of European summer. This cafe is a delightful contribution.

Yelp
This restaurant is down Grand St right outside of the Marriott on the Magnificent Mile. Kinda hidden gem. I came for breakfast. Great and cozy atmosphere. Food is very good. They apparently make their own jelly, very fruity and chunky..nice. Bacon is "wow", hash browns and eggs are delicious. The waffle was good...only thing would make it better is if the syrup was warmed. My score is A-
google avatar

Victoria F.

Yelp
This place is great for a quick bite anytime! They have a well stocked bakery full of lots of great pastries, regular, gluten free and even some vegan options! This place is great for anyone because of their large selection of items! I'd recommend their Nutella hot chocolate, chicken and waffle as well as their chocolate croissants! It all is absolutely tasty! This place is great for all ages!

Yelp
Arrived on an early flight and my hotel checked me around 10:30 AM. Needed to prepare for a meeting, so needed some brunch to go. Became a goddess at cute Goddess and the Baker around the corner. Buzzing business. Pastries, coffees, brunch mains all looked great. My Goddess Breakfast and Chocolate Croissant (which counter guy recommended warming up) were huge portions and delish. Saving some of the pastry for later. Good coffee options and amazing merch! Goddesses rule this morning!
google avatar

Beth T.

Yelp
Not that I don't love the meat/potatoes/sausage culture of Chicago, but sometimes a girl needs something green and something decadently caffeinated. Goddess hit the spot. Order at the counter then have a seat. The outdoor seating is perfect for the people and the sights. Five stars for me!!
google avatar

Yelp
Goddess and the Baker is a popular chain in the Loop that offers breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, and more in their all-day menu. This location was expansive and cute and was the perfect way to spend a quick morning meal before heading to work. I ordered their Oatmeal ($8) and a Matcha Strawberry Latte ($6). The oatmeal was topped with brown sugar, granola, and fresh berries and was as you'd expect from any breakfast spot. It was a healthy and filling way to start my morning. As for my drink, the latte was absolutely on point. If you order in, your drink comes in a mug adorned with dried petals that was not only aesthetically pleasing, but a tasty treat to go with their house-made strawberry pureed matcha. Definitely a treat, although I wish my drink had been a bit hotter. Overall, a great spot to grab a small bite or even lunch on the go while working in the city.
google avatar

shannon m.

Yelp
The hot food was just okay, almost subpar, due to it being warm temp. That was my only main complaint about the meal other than that the portions were plentiful. I will say the coffee is good and I love their variety of pastries. All delicious.
google avatar

Anna Z.

Yelp
Food was great-- the hashbrown breakfast sandwich was exactly what I needed. Drinks were very good -- lots of specialty options. We were there at 9am on Saturday, and there were so many people. But we got a table luckily. Ambiance and vibes were good -- very bustling.
google avatar

Chanelle N.

Yelp
Good atmosphere and juice with a whole bundle of mint and a big chunk of pineapple! The Dubai pistachio croissant was lackluster, it did not ooze with the viral pistachio cream. As for the breakfast sandwich, when you put hash brown in the title of a sandwich.. I'm expecting that has brown to be crispy! It wasn't but I usually like their other stuff!
google avatar

Yelp
went to this place 2 out of the 4 days i was in chicago. love the aesthetics of this place and everyone is very nice i looooove banana lattes and the banana foster is a must try! i got it with an extra shot of espresso and i finished that drink in like 5 minutes lol. you'll just be in my dreams for now until i visit again oh and they offer half off pastries on the ones they make a lot of!! i wanted to try the almond croissant and i was lucky they made a lot of it the 2nd day i went, so instead of it being $6, it was like $3!! a steal!!!

Yelp
Visited here during a New Year's trip to Chicago. The restaurant/bakery itself was aesthetically pleasing. Very bright, flowing colors, and a great set up. This place is clearly a fan favorite as the door constantly rotated with patrons coming in and out. Despite the heavy flow of traffic, I would say that the staff did their best to keep order and to not allow patrons to hog tables for too long. As for the food, the baked goods presented in the glass case all looked delicious! For my meal, I ordered the bacon avocado omelette with a waffle along with a goddess sweet cream cold brew. The food was delivered to our table pretty swiftly surprisingly! With regards to my omelette, I would say the avocado chunks were slightly underwhelming, but ultimately, the meal was good. I enjoyed my waffle mostly. We also tried a traditional cheesecake which was pretty good as well - it was compact in size yet very filling! I would definitely keep the Goddess and the Baker on my visit list.
google avatar

Gil S.

Yelp
I expected more out of this place, but overall the food was ok, the atmosphere is find and service is ok too. It's a very busy place, which is nice, and food is fresh. I thought the pastries would be high end, but they were just ok. No complaints though, I will be back if I'm in town again.
google avatar

Nisha C.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite spots to grab coffee, pastries, breakfast or lunch. I love the majority of their menu and there's too many items to mention but notable favorites of mine include the lavender latte, egg & ham cheddar biscuit, ham & cheese croissant, cherry cheesecake danish, and the garden goddess wrap. I could eat here everyday and it's especially nice in the warmer months when you can eat outside and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the street. The service is friendly and speedy. If you're looking for a pick-me up, sweet treat, or a place to grab a meal, this the perfect spot.
google avatar

Yelp
Two words: Glitter Latte! So cute and fun for the new year. My family and I came here on New Years Eve for a quick meal and we had a great experience. Not all locations are the same, but we really enjoyed our experience here. The servers and cashiers here were very friendly and accommodating to any dietary/allergy adjustments. In addition, we were able to get tables together despite how busy it was with help from the staff. We were very hungry and didn't take any pictures of our meal but we all agreed that chickpea sandwich, hummus wrap, avocado toast, tostada were all excellent choices. Similarly, we all enjoyed our specially lattes. I can't wait to come back every time they bring a new fun latte to their menu!
google avatar

Shawn S.

Yelp
Everything is this city has a vibe or an ambiance to it. This is a full menu coffee shop it moves like a deli counter and its food delivery with a helpful staff. It was another nice day out so grabbed a table under an umbrella. Great place to work out of. And a big enough menu to keep coming back to try new items.

Karen H.

Yelp
Yum!!! Love the gluten-free choices. The absolute best vegan Avocado Toast bursting with flavor and loaded with generous amounts of avocado and arugula on top!
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Excellent stop for a light (or even more substantial) breakfast. Picked this place because it close to the river right before our architecture tour (when in Chicago). It's very trendy and cute. Outdoor and indoor seating. Amazing pastry, menu and coffee selection. Went with an iced coffee plus a Ham and Swiss cheese croissant. The croissant has a bit of everything bagel seasoning. The mocha came with a mini muffin. Very happy with my choices.
google avatar

Caroline B.

Yelp
Seating is a little confusing for a group of 4, would better recommend a to-go order. But the food and drinks were yummy.
google avatar

Lori E.

Yelp
The Vietnamese Cold Brew is my favorite - not too sweet. The pastries were delicious, but it was Gordon that made our day. He went out of his way to make sure we had what we needed. The service was above. We will be back.
google avatar

Elizabeth F.

Yelp
Food was meh, looked good but failed the taste test. We walked a long long way expecting more.
google avatar

Michaela E.

Yelp
We loved the Goddess and the Baker we stopped here twice while we were visiting! The place is busy, but the food and drinks come out quick! I also purchased some of their merchandise because I thought it was cute and their coffee beans were a great addition!
google avatar

Joseph Z.

Yelp
Loved the atmosphere here. The cappuccino was well made and tasted balanced. The small pastry was a nice surprise I didn't expect. The acai Bowl left a little to be desired. But the huevos Rancheros were great! Light and delicious. The service was exceptional, they came by and brought the food and came by occasionally to check and clean up.
google avatar

Sandeep C.

Yelp
Just loved my experience! Being a Chicagoan I've walked past their locations plenty of times. Finally decided to stop in one day. Bright and inviting space, you order at the counter and get a light up coaster while you find a spot to sit. I got the nitro cold brew and hash brown sandwich(subbed sausage for bacon). My wife got the earl grey tea and breakfast sandwich. Simple and underrated....how they bring your food to you...also the drinks in nice glassware. The sandwiches were delicious. It's not too fancy or complex but I just love the delicious simplicity of a good/easy breakfast. Not to mention the plethora of eye catching pastries!
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
great coffee, and food! lots of options to choose from. super quick service, everyone was warm and welcoming!
google avatar

Adrienne W.

Yelp
This spot was awesome! I wish we had thought to eat lunch here and will be back in the future to give the food a try. I got a chaggacino which was delicious, not too sweet which I feel like a lot of flavored lattes can be. They have loads of pastries and food options. I will say it was packed full of people when we went.
google avatar

Ivonnie S.

Yelp
3.5 stars. Goddess and the Baker seems to be quite a popular spot for coffee, pastries, and hang-outs. I enjoyed the drinks more than the pastries that I tried. FOOD + DRINKS // + Chagaccino (thumbs-up!): this comes with espresso, steamed oat milk, wild foraged chaga, organic cacao, cinnamon, and vanilla. Chaga supposedly has a variety of health benefits, so you can feel extra healthy while drinking it! Plus, it tasted pretty good. I'd get this again. + Apple butter latte (mixed feelings about this drink): this has espresso, apple butter, and oat milk. It reminded me of Starbucks' Apple Crisp Oatmilk Macchiato, but less sweet. If you like apple butter or apple pie, it's worth giving this a shot. ~ Cappuccino croissant (pass): I got my croissant warmed, per recommendation from the staff, but I'm not sure if it made the croissant any better. The croissant itself was dense/doughy, not flaky or crisp, which gave me the impression it had been sitting around for a while. The coffee cream inside tasted good and helped with the dryness of the croissant, but there was only a small dollop of it on one end. ~ Cinnamon roll cruffin (pass): this looked better than it tasted. Again, the croissant texture was bready, a combination of soft and dense, and I didn't particularly enjoy it. SERVICE + AMBIANCE // I stopped by here on several weekday mornings, and it was packed every time with people grabbing things to-go and sitting around chatting. There's often a short line, but it moves quickly and is still shorter than Starbucks (and the coffee is arguably better). Plenty of available seating inside. There were a few outdoor tables and chairs on the non-rainy days. Hip aesthetic. The tables aren't always the cleanest due to the high turnover of people, but people should also clean up after themselves more :) Also, I love the designs on their printed paper coffee cups. The ones I got had cute art of Chicago's elevated rail lines and a representation of their coffee shop. OVERALL // I'd come back to Goddess and the Baker for coffee drinks any day. I'm less sure about the pastries, which so far have been a 0/2 hit for me; but they do all look so good, so I'd probably be tempted into trying another different pastry next time.
google avatar

Vince L.

Yelp
Everyone at my office at here! One set of coworkers asked me to meet for coffee here. Another (not knowing I had breakfast here), suggested we grabbed lunch to go here. Yet another said we should grab a coffee in the afternoon here. I was like, do we have stock at this place or something?? The coffee and food were pretty good. I had the bagel and schmear, and it was solid. I really wanted to eat the red onions but had a meeting that morning and passed on it. I didn't keep my receipt, but it was like $8. For lunch, I chose the Chicken Club. It came with bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado, lemon aioli--on ciabatta bread. $14. Tasty and filling. A wonderful co-worker did me a huge favor, and guess where I thought to get her a gift card from! I figured it'd go to good use.

Yelp
If you're in Chicago, visit Goddess and the Baker!! This little bakery/cafe was the best way I could've started off my weekend. Walking by, I noticed they had a speciality Chai listed on the menu. Typically coffee shops have unique coffee/espresso drinks, but never tea! It was a Prickly Pear Chai, and although I was skeptical on how it would taste, it was amazing! One of the best and unique chai's I've ever had. They also had a ton of pastries! Both seasonal/fall themed (pumpkin danish, fall spice muffin, etc) and your standard flavors (ham and cheese croissant, chocolate croissant). Everything we ordered was delicious, both drinks and food! Out of everything I ate in Chicago over the weekend, Goddess and the Baker is a 100% must return to!
google avatar

Kay P.

Yelp
A very cute, casual cafe with delicious pasties, coffee and food! Their servers are really nice and they have such a wide selection of food from breakfast to lunch to choose from. Their cakes are incredible and I love the seasonal lattes! I had their Vietnamese iced coffee and it was delicious. The wrap was also so good especially for a quick meal!
google avatar

Wendy L.

Yelp
Stopped by on a weekend morning and it was bustling inside. Just full of energy and delicious smells. The line was surprisingly fast but seating was hard to come by. I adore their selection of customized drinks- I tried the Nutella oat latte and it was delectable. Their morning sandwich is the perfect savory breakfast, so filling and a good option for sharing. I also tried their raspberry pistachio cruffin, which was my first time trying this unique flavor combo and I'm a fan.
google avatar

Cheryl L.

Yelp
I'm in love with this place for breakfast. In fact, I went here twice on a business trip. It gets very crowded on weekends so plan accordingly if you are doing brunch. Also they shut down online ordering during busy times. I had the following: Strawberry matcha latte- 5/5 stars Morning sandwich - 5/5 stars It was a bit expensive for the sandwich but my companion says it was, "Damn good." I like the location and the store is bright and airy for those who are meeting for a casual date or work meeting. Although I would do that on weekdays to avoid the crowd.
google avatar

Yelp
On a cool morning, looking for grub in downtown Chicago, we stopped at Goddess and the Baker for some good eats and we we got it! For me, the huevos rancheros - two gooey eggs topped with fresh, crispy veggies from south of the border. Break the yolks, watch them run, then fill up your belly with yumminess and a little spice from jalapenos. The rest of our group got a standard Goddess breakfast (toast, eggs, bacon and hash browns), chicken and waffles and a tuna croissant, and they all hit the spot, just as you'd imagine a good breakfast would. Special shout out to the Baker's Choice salad - a fresh arugula and green salad with a perfectly cooked egg off to the side, a perfect combination of freshness for breakfast. And of course, on the way out we had to help ourselves to some baked goodies to gnosh on the way to our next stop. Goddess and the Baker, now you can add "...and a satisfied customer" to your title!

Yelp
Very cute, bright and busy cafe. You order at the counter and pick up your items when called. There wasn't space to sit so to-go it is! I do want to return to sit in one day and eat. The glitter latte is very cute. It's almost $7 for it.
