The 31 Best Places To Eat & Stay In Sydney - Sydney - The Infatuation

"If there’s one place in this city to go for ramen, it’s Gogyo. The Surry Hills location is known for the charred kogashi style, or burnt miso ramen, which is a dark, clear soup, and the best thing here. They also serve the more traditional tonkotsu ramen, and a chilli shoyu with habanero pork mince and tomato (another favorite of ours), all of which are best with a pint of Asahi on draft." - caroline clements 33

Owned by the Ippudo group. A little more fine dining style. Nice ramen soup, probably better than expected. But I feel the noodles are not as nice as in Ippudo. The ramen egg is just a regular boiled egg with no flavouring, not an ajitsuke. The curry rice is also nice. Well made katsu. Nothing is out of the ordinary but everything is as expected. Comfortable surroundings and seating. Fairly priced for the value.

The fried eggplant was perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and soft inside. The ramen was such a nice surprise with a deep, rich broth that I really enjoyed. It was a little salty for my taste, but overall the food was excellent and definitely worth trying.

This restaurant has a warm, stylish atmosphere — perfect for meeting friends, family gatherings, or a relaxed dinner. The menu offers a great variety, from fresh sashimi and rich, flavorful ramen to comforting Japanese curry rice and creative, beautifully plated dishes. Prices are reasonable and the taste is consistently delicious. The staff are friendly, attentive, and always smiling, making sure drinks are topped up and everything is well taken care of without having to ask. Comfortable seating and soft lighting make the dining experience even more special. 💡 Perfect for: • Catching up with friends • Family dinners • Casual drinks and dining Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great flavors, lovely atmosphere, and excellent service — definitely a place worth returning to.

Google
Decent Japanese restaurant with a good vibe. Nice ambience etc. Ramen was standout with the tonkotsu ramen being my favourite. Appetisers are good too 4/5. Only think I would say is severe was really slow. We went in on a Thursday and it took a while for an our group of 9 to be served. Aside from that, decent place!

Lovely atmosphere & vibe of this place. Dimmed lighting & not too loud. The Gyoza was lovely but could’ve been crispier. The karage chicken was beautiful & loved the kombucha aoili with it. The wagyu beef spring roll was delicious (taste like a cheeseburger spring roll). The Pork Ramen (extra special portions) was delicious, very flavourful & loved the sprouts & taste. Service 4/5, wish the waiters came over a bit more so we were able to ask for more water & napkins. Overall a great place & likely to return.

Really enjoyed the baos, karaage and spring rolls. The pork based ramen is better than the chicken based ramen. The edamame is so good too!! Check out my food Instagram @erinxeats for more!

Google
Spicy tonkotsu was fab, I loved it but my friend had the miso and it was more like a gravy than soup base - my friend didn’t like it very much. Great flavours though.

The ramen is way too salty but the noodle texture is nice. Beer took super long to serve after I finished more than half of my ramen.

Yelp
This is honestly one of the best meals I've had in a long time. I went into it as a bit of a skeptic because I like ramen but don't LOVE ramen, and Gogyo was out of our way and on the pricy side. BUT it was a dark rainy night and heading to Gogyo felt perfect. We did not have reservations so we sat at the kitchen counter and were able to watch the kitchen dole out incredible amounts of perfectly prepared food, like a well oiled machine. It was truly amazing to watch. The food? Amazing. We started with the ahi carpaccio, which was delicious. I could have slurped up the rest of the sauce with a straw. My husband and I both ordered the same ramen (kogashi shoyu with double toppings) and it was divine. The broth had so many dimensions of flavor, the noodles were fresh and chewy, the egg was perfect, and the meat was flavorful and not overly fatty. The only reason I won't be back before the end of our visit to Sydney is because there are so many other places I want to try.

Yelp
Amazing ramen in surry hills! Quite packed and well known among locals there. Ramen soup base was very flavorful and it's better than all the ramens in vancouver but still not japan standards yet. Also love that their torched the outer of their meat for that charred flavor :p

Yelp
When I read Japanese charred ramen, I was intrigued. We came by last night for some dinner. SERVICE - Hostess was friendly. There was quite a wait but we did not mind. I would say make reservations if you can to cut that wait in half. FOOD Chicken Kaarage - The chicken pieces were big but not very crunchy. Very basic. Charsu Rice - This was delicious! The charred pork belly was very tender and had so much flavor! The mixture of the meat, mayo, and rice was perfect. Tonkatsu Modern - My husband got this bowl and I wish I got his instead. It broth was very savory and it had a spicy kick to it. K Ramen - Mine was a dark broth and it was good. Cannot say it would be my favorite but I enjoyed it. The pork was tender and not too fatty which I prefer. Overall, the food was decent and filling.

Yelp
Stumbled into this restaurant, literally as my feet were killing me from sightseeing all day in poorly made shoes, anyway....... Salmon sashimi was divine. Ended up ordering another. (Not pictured) I had the Shoyu (pictured w extra egg on the side cause.. soft boiled egg duh) and bf had the ton katsu. I've had more than a few bowls of ramen in my life and have to say this was the best ramen I've ever had! We sat at the bar where the open kitchen is as no tables were available but I'm glad we did. We were able to see the assembly line of these happy chefs put together each bowl of goodness. So much detail. It seemed as if each person was in charge of their own ingredient. One man perfectly spiraling the ramen noodles, another lading the broth, and another intricately placing the protein or veggies. I was in Sydney for holiday for a week only and wanted to come back on the way to the airport. It was that goooood! Ps that's an Asahi from draft 50/50 w half Asahi black/half Asahi Dry. Mind. Blown.

Yelp
I am not sure how new this place is, but the restaurant looks like they have only been in business not too long ago. It has the modern but japanese feel to it. I like the layout of the restaurant, all the tables are not *super* close to one another. With the open kitchen, it is cool to watch the chefs work their magic into the ramen while waiting for your food. I decided to try something different - vegetables ramen and i love it ! It is very different from the typical miso/ shoyo/ ramen. The mushroom broth is really light and flavorful - it also has two tempura portobello mushroom, kale , tomato and thinly sliced red onion. Never had anything like this before, two thumbs up, I would highly recommend this. The gyoza was very similar to Chaco Bar...the chilli sauce/ soy sace was identical....yum as well. A little pricey but worth ordering. I will definitely be back to try the other ramens :)

Yelp
Life-changing ramen! This is how I imagine the best of Japan's ramen should taste. Replacing Salaryman, which I'm told was also famous as a grungy ramen/street food joint, Gyogo gives off such an authentically modern Japanese feel. Walking in, the interior is so clean and sleek, it feels like such an elegant restaurant. However, the prices are actually very reasonable! $17-18 for a bowl full of steaming goodness. The care the chefs put into each bowl shows how seriously they take their job and their deep love of food. I had the Gogyo Tonkotsu ramen, which immediately caught my eye since pork ramen is my go-to. It was spectacular! I have never had such a flavoursome broth before, accompanied by the perfectly cooked housemade noodles, and I feel like I've been missing out this whole time. Next time though, I'm keen to try the signature Charred Miso ramen. I caught a glimpse of it's dark and edgy colour, and was very intrigued. My friends described the flavour as smoky and strong, and incredibly tasty. Looking forward to trying their whole menu!

Yelp
WOW. this place not only has the best ramen i've ever had, but some of the best food PERIOD. the prices are astoundingly low, the service is impeccable, and the seating and environment are wonderful. definitely my go-to place for lunch or dinner in sydney. i didn't know food could taste this amazing. WOW.

Yelp
I think it's the best ramen in Sydney. I prefer the tonkotsu over the burnt miso, I find the burnt miso too rich. Come early and snag a bar seat.

Yelp
Limited menu means they can really focus on the quality. Great food. Could improve their selection of Japanese beverages but only a minor point.

Yelp
Ah, the service, certainly let's this place down. Disinterested wait staff cruise on by with barely a caring glance. 39 minutes into a strictly advised 90 minute sitting we had yet to be given the opportunity to order. Food was good though.

Yelp
This restaurant is wonderful! I went with my father at the end of a nice day exploring Sydney. We got there right at 5:30pm because we couldn't make a reservation for day-of, and we were immediately seated at the bar. I loved how you could see the chefs at work behind the bar. We shared the salmon roll, which was beautiful and delicious, and then each got a bowl of ramen. I had a chicken-base broth with pork, green onions, wavy noodles, bamboo, and half of a soft boiled egg. The portion was large (great for the price) and I ate every last bit. Will definitely come back on my next trip to Sydney.

Yelp
most staff are not Japanese, not even asian. sit in front of desk, the kitchen is dirty while the dining hall is very clean and tiny. staff behave unprofessional and to be honest, it it chaos . ramen is just ok, like a normal ippudo ramen chain elsewhere. would not come this shop anymore, not worthy to this quality food.
