"The Salamander Resort’s lobby comes to life and the food, drinks, and entertainment center around its wine bar with several Virginia varietals on menu. Enjoy a sophisticated ambiance and bar bites including Korean steak bowls, banh mi sandwiches, and sushi platters, with specialty rolls like the Gold Cup Roll ($17) made with shrimp tempura, jumbo lump crab, and gold tobiko." - Tim Ebner, Kalina Newman

We had lunch and drinks at the Gold Cup Wine Bar located within the Salamander Resort on a couple of occasions so far during our stay. The restaurant is beautiful, the food is excellent, the service has been hit or miss. Sometimes great & and other times aggravating. The staff here needs to do a better job of making guests of the hotel feel valued.

We recently went to Gold Cup wine bar and sat outside for a birthday get together. We have been here many time before but what set this experience apart was our server, Bryce. He went above and beyond to make the evening special for our group, which included kids and the birthday girl. He was very attentive and always had a smile on his face. He even brought out some blankets as it started to cool off in the evening. Thank you for making the experience so memorable!

Thank you Larbi for excellent service! The wings and Korean Steak bowl were delicious!

We ordered the Mac and cheese and it was delicious. My husband and I ordered the steak and fries and it was served in a plate that looks almost like microwavable plate. It did not look pleasing and the steak tasted just ok at best. The shrimp with pecans were delicious. Salamander roll was average. Cocktails are okay. Espresso martini is above average. Margarita was okay. Overall, food is just very average at best but the price for the quality of the food was not justifiable. The resort is very nice and has great ambiance and attention to detail is obvious. I wish this restaurant could have served better tasting food considering how nice this hotel is.

Rachel is awesome, I never had burrata so good. Fig old fashioned is too good. Very romantic place to spend some time. Love their horse artwork all over the property.

A lovely woman named Andrea asked my daughter how old she was and when she mentioned her birthday was tomorrow, Andrea included a little scoop of ice cream and a candle with our food! After such a busy day, it was the kindest thing I could imagine and it made my daughter’s night. Thank you so much!!!!

Gold cup is a great spot to have an afternoon meal, an evening drink, or even a casual dinner. The bartenders were very experienced and helpful. The menu is diverse with a lot of options, some shareable and some just for one. You can also take your drinks from the bar to the main foyer or even to the library. Very enjoyable spot right in the Salamander Resort

Google
Checked into the resort and immediately wondered why this place had received 5 stars. The grounds are massive but under-developed. So much more could be done to make it more impressive and truly 5 star worthy. However, that's not what this review is about. Late night dining is not an option here. My partner and I decided to order in-room dining around 9:30 pm. Not considered the average dinnertime, right? The operator informed me that it was "rush hour", that is, a lot people were ordering dinner at the time and the wait was a minimum of one hour and forty minutes! Wth! We take a pass and decide we'd order something from the Gold Cup Wine Bar if we got hungry. The online menu included several options we might try and it closed at midnight so we had time. We venture down to the restaurant at 11 pm and take a seat at one of the high top tables about 5 feet from the bar. At least two servers brushed by us and intentionally didn't make eye contact. When we finally "flagged" a server down, she abruptly told us that we would not be served at the table and we'd have to sit at the bar if we wanted anything. When my partner inquired further as to why the server couldn't take five steps from the bar to deliver the food, the server's reaction was to feign total ignorance and indifference. No need to try to make sense of it plus time was not on our side. We decide to sit at the bar but soon learn that the menu online is not the late night menu that's available; bait and switch maybe???? The only dishes that were available included about four humdrum salads, four wraps (one with turkey, the others vegetarian) and some dessert. But before we could make our selection, the person behind the bar tells us they're all out of turkey. Again, wth! My partner decides to voice his displeasure while I walk away to try to find some other options. The attendant at the front desk acknowledged the inconvenience of the limited food options and offered us a ride to the nearby Safeway. And so that's how our story ends, we left a five star hotel to get cold cuts at the grocery store. This place needs to take notes from the Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michael's, Maryland. Both are five star exclusive resorts and very expensive. Rooms start at $500 per night and the suite we had was over $1,000 per night. IPC's grounds are lavishly designed and beautifully manicured so much so that you see the natural beauty of the place from every vanish point. And, they have a "real" late night menu. Salamander, everybody who eats late doesn't eat like a rabbit! And how could you run out of t-u-r-k-e-y???? Also, the online menu should be a true reflection of what is actually offered at any hour. A tip to the venue manager, use some of the funds you get from your overpriced rooms and buy some real food for your guests who have to hike the sprawling, empty grounds, work up an appetite and end up woefully disappointed. Live up to your five star rating and get rid of your mediocre service. Sheila Johnson, you're better than this! UPDATE: Our stay ended very well. Although in-room dining for breakfast was disastrous (cold food, unwanted ingredients and a server who practically asked for an additional tip) In the daylight, the resort was very stately. The food options are limited but there are a number of decent restaurants nearby. However, the culinary aspect of the resort almost redeemed itself with the "butcher's block" at Saturday brunch. Nice job!

Yelp
We came here to stop in on a day of touring Middleburg and wanted to have a mid day drink. The bar area had less seats then I expected and they had a 20 minute wait for a table even though half the tables were empty. We were able to find the last few seats at the bar though they do allow you to order from the bar and sit in the gorgeous lobby instead. We ordered two glasses of wine which were great but obviously really expensive. I was surprised there cocktail selection wasn't more vast but they had some nice mocktail options. Food portions looked huge but we didn't eat here. The prices were really high for certain items and nothing really stood out as unique or interesting. The truffle fries were $17 for an appetizer and they looked pretty thick cut. I think if they lowered the prices a bit it would be more enticing to eat here but we found better food deals in downtown Middleburg.

Safia R.

Yelp
Not bad but I'd suggest maybe trying a restaurant in old town Middleburg if you're staying at the salamander! Had lunch here and it wasn't amazing but wasn't bad. Burrata was good

Yelp
I like Gold Cup Wine Bar for what it is: a quick-ish dinner that is slightly less pricey than Harriman's for guests staying at Salamander. There are "hit's" and "misses." We really enjoyed the pecan fried shrimp and mussels, but the tempura shrimp was mushy and apple pie sundae didn't seem terribly impressive for what was described. Service was decent. We didn't enjoy the gnats that kept flying around during our dinner. We also didn't enjoy the $65 charge for Prosecco that we saw on the menu as $24. Salamander is one of the few restaurants I know that write pricing on their menu as by the ounce versus by the glass then bottle; they wrote $14/$24. I'm closing with: you get what you get

Bella J.

Yelp
Great location obviously, not good food or drinks. Plan ahead and get a reservation at Harriman's. 1. Reservation: won't hurt, you can always walk in. 2. Big bar area, decent drinks, but not all good 3. Food: 3 stars at best For such a nice place, they could really up their quality and taste especially for the price they charge. - cheese and charcuterie board: 2 stars. meat pate thing was horrible. totally not edible with funny smell. Our waitress fully agreed, still did not change it or solve it. The usual brie and goat cheese were fine and they have this god-awful cheese. I didn't think it would be possible for me to hate cheese as I love all of them, but they found a horrible thing here. WORST CHEESE ever can be found here. - ahi poke: is okay but the thick and super hard wonton it came with was horrible. How do they think this hard thing goes well with tuna that was practically melting in mouth? We only went this far, it was so bad, we decided to have entrée elsewhere. 4. Ambience: super dark inside. But i always loved it. Bright and hot outside. Won't hurt to bring bug spray as they don't have any. All in all, eat at the other restaurant that is a few steps away and 1 tree away if you're sitting outside. World of difference in quality of food and service.

Yelp
I've visited here quite a few times as this is the more casual dining option on campus at the Salamander Resort & Spa. So I often eat here for lunch or dinner whenever I stay at the Salamander. The food is always delicious & the service is very quick. I've visited with friends & with family & they all seem to enjoy it! Not only is the food super flavorful, but the presentation is always top notch. Our waitress told us that the dessert chef has been on Food Network a few times. I would definitely recommend getting a sushi roll, the fries, & any of their donut desserts.

Eli L.

Yelp
I like Gold Cup and eat there several times a year but I'm less impressed as time goes on. The good: The setting, Salamander, is beautiful and it's great that you can eat and drink in the hotel's lobby that's somehow grand and cozy at once. Cocktails, while quite pricey ($21 for most) are very good. Food seems to have gone downhill: really good if also pricey sushi roles are gone and a Bahn Mi I had on my last visit served on ciabatta (?) and covered with nearly tasteless slaw. When I asked a waiter for "hot peppers" ( the menu promised habaneros) he brought me...black pepper. When he asked how things were and I said "well, okay" (the sandwich was edible but I didn't like it) he just nodded and walked away. I thought they might want feedback. I'll be back again because I've had good experiences in the past but I'm cooling on a place that was once a favorite.

Chad C.

Yelp
Sweet dining experience I've had at any sit down restaurant in a decade. If it would let me rate it with 0 stars I would.

Alicia W.

Yelp
I have tried everything from the chicken wings, fried fish to the pork chops and unfortunately have not had a good experience with any of the food items at Gold Cup, while the wait staff here are incredible and Ben at the adjoining Salamander Spa is THE BEST massage therapist anywhere

Yelp
We used to come here often, up until about 1.5 - 2 years ago. Recently we came as a family and the service was mediocre boarding on bad. Things were forgotten, the server wasn't friendly at all and she was also gone for long periods of time. The quality of the food was decent, but not great, definitely not worth the EXTREMELY HIGH PRICES they charge! We've been to Harriman's many times as well, but with all the local food options in the area now, I just can't see coming back to spend money on a poor dining experience.

Yelp
We ate at the Gold Cup for three Fridays in a row hoping the next visit would be better than the last. For our first Friday ever at Salamander, we were seated next to the swinging and very busy kitchen door. Tables were available in the main bar...first come first served. The second Friday we were seated in the back hall on the way to the bathrooms. It was prom night and the bathrooms were very busy with prom dresses swishing our seats every minute or so. The third Friday, we were again seated in the back hallway next to a 3 generation family of six...two of which were under 5. Other than having noises and funny faces aimed our way, dinner proceeded very slowly while being faced with many shenanigan. The kids were raised up to sit on the deep window sill and proceeded to yank on the floor length drapes and drum the walls with their feet. The final straw was when Dad reached behind my husband and pulled out the port-a-potty chair. It was used in the bathroom but we all got to hear how great little man did on his potty. I tried to talk to the hostess who eyed me wearily and muttered "I'm sorry". Well, I'm sorry too that I will not be frequenting the Salamander resort again. Too bad really...we live here in town and would enjoy a nice venue.

Truthful S.

Yelp
The ambiance here is amazing and wine selection is superb. Absolutely love the vibe here & have had many wonderful experiences here. Wait staff is friendly and food is outstanding (expensive, but worth it).

Brandon C.

Yelp
The two dashing bartenders Daniel and Jacob were very engaging and delightful to be around. All the qualities a bartender should have! A few days prior I spoke with Diane, one of the nicest supervisors I've encountered, about her recommendations for dishes to try, and she could not have been more spot on! Will definitely have to come back for sure.

Yelp
The Gold Cup bar is exceptional. My party and I recently met for evening drinks and snack and were welcomed by Sam Gerges. Sam displayed a high level of hospitality and professionalism. On our past visits, it was Jose Curci who held this very high standard. While we will miss the relationship and rapport that we had with Jose, Sam is continuing this great legacy of maintaining this highest level of hospitality and customer service. Thank you Sam for making our evening soirée a beautiful experience. OD

Yelp
Salamander An extremely classy gem hidden within the Salamander Resort. In a handful of visits I've been consistently impressed by the quality of the food. They have wonderful, shareable appetizers and their entrees evidence a high level of talent in the kitchen. The red meat dishes came out perfectly cooked and they always have a selection of seafood dishes on hand. The service has been consistently good showing an attention to detail in their hiring as well as their food. But the best thing about this place is the beautiful decor and ambiance. They have beautiful indoor seating, a wonderful deck if you prefer outdoor seating, and even "formal living room" style seating options in an adjoining room which is perfect for after dinner chats with a group of friends. One of the best date night destinations in NOVA for sure. My favorite time to come is for lunch during a nice day where you can opt to take a walk after your meal. They have acres of beautiful grounds with a number of areas to sit and talk with your date or with a group of friends.

Grace S.

Yelp
This bar was superb. I was what I would characterize as "annoying" and asked for something not on the menu. I asked for a mojito - with the blackberry purée I saw they had for other drinks. I also noted I don't like it to be very sweet. It was perfect --the tartness from the lime really shined through, and it was a really yummy drink. Kudos to the bartender who unfortunately I don't remember his name, but he was excellent.

Emily P.

Yelp
Dropped by here on our way to dinner and grabbed a cheese board, crab dip, and a bottle of wine. Our server, Lucky, offered expert advice on what was available and we heavily enjoyed both our dishes. Sitting on the patio was so lovely!

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
So bad. The food is so overpriced and so incredibly mediocre. I got the cauliflower because it came highly recommended and it was barely edible.

Leyla K.

Yelp
It's my second time here and loved it. Great place, cauliflower was amazing. Our server Aubrey was so sweet and helpful with great food recommendations. The outdoor tent was quiet and cozy with a great heater. Highly recommended

Yelp
Salamander never fails to disappoint and provide poor service. Went last night to meet 6 girlfriends, with a reservation for 7, at 645-7pm, in the Gold Cup bar by the fireplace. The table was only set for 6, so we had to grab a chair from a neighboring table. Our waiter came around a few minutes later to fill water glasses, but even though he was standing right next to me, failed to bring me a water glass, utensils, or menu. When he came back a few minutes later to take drink orders, I had to directly ask for the glass, etc -- he certainly wasn't bringing them on his own! It then took 15 min for our drinks to arrive, and another 10 min for him to come back for our food order. Five ordered appetizers (1 burrata, 2 cauliflower, 2 shrimp), one a ceasar salad with salmon, and one a pizza. It took 1 hr 15 min for our food to arrive!! Unbelievable. Halfway through the food wait, the waiter came around to refill water and ask about a second round of drinks. We all had another round -- bc, no food -- and kept waiting. Finally five of us got our food, and then we waited 5 more minutes for the other two ladies to get their plates. The food itself was fine. 9 As we were mostly done with our food, the waiter comes back and quietly asks only one end of the table if they would like another drink. It wasn't until he brings them that the ladies notice, and are surprised, so ask if they can get another drink as well. The waiter responds, "Oh, I didn't know you wanted another." Response: "Not surprising, as you never asked us!" ‍ Shortly after he left, a large group came into the room, started playing pool, and the noise level turned into a sports bar during a finals match. We had to shout at each other to be heard. Our drinks arrived, and we requested the waiter say something to the group, or get the manager. 10 minutes later, the manager arrived, and said nothing to the group, just apologized for the noise with the excuse "they had a business reception and have had a bit to drink." With that lack of action, we quickly asked for our checks so we could leave, as the noise and raucousness was too much. That took another almost 10 minutes to complete, and we then gladly walked out. One of the ladies had a word with the manager about the terrible service as we left, and he just apologized, but nothing else.

Jeff C.

Yelp
Straight facts. Forbes has a very strict rating system. This resort has a 5 star rating. As someone who maintained a 4 star rating and traveled to multiple 5 star properties for many years, I can tell you how difficult it is to maintain that rating every year. It's grueling and there are specific requirements. The Salamander does not meet the requirements of a 5 star hotel and is not in the class of any 4 star hotel or restaurant that I have been to in the United States. The service and attention to detail are just not there. Room was fine, not exceptional, spa is bottom of the barrel for that level and the service is barely 1 star.

Kimi S.

Yelp
It was a beautiful spring-like Sunday and a few friends and I decided to head out to Salamander Resort for an afternoon of brunching and antiquing to celebrate. I had been excited to check out Salamander Resort for a while now and was immediately struck by the vastness and beauty of everything. Everything was chicly decorated and fit perfectly with the horse country theme. Lots of eye candy for sure! As for the actual restaurant itself, I think that there is still a lot of training that needs to happen before the dining experience matches what the hotel should be. Service was quite awkward: + My friend asked for a latte but got a cappucino instead and they completely forgot about another friend's tea order. + They just assumed we were there for their brunch buffet so they left us alone without any information about what was on there or what it costs. We eventually asked for a menu and decided to order from there. + Service was slow in general and did not check on us or refill our waters. Food was okay: + I was surprised to see they had a sushi menu with some interesting fusion choices! It was fun to try new roll choices (including one with everything bagel seasoning) but it quite honestly something I would skip the next time I came back. It just doesn't seem to be a house specialty (For example: Roll was loosely packed and the cream cheese was cut into a cold block so the flavors did not melt into each other like it should.) + That being said my friend's crab cake looked fabulous and a few bites of the sides we ordered like mac and cheese and papas bravas (a huge portion!) were delicious. I really want to like this place so I know I will come back for a return visit and hopefully by then they will have the service kinks worked out.

Yelp
Visited Salamander Resort & Spa on New Year's Day. Gold Cup Wine Bar is really charming and cozy, great ambiance for a drink or two. The food could be better. Drinks & Cocktails are a bit overpriced. The bar is understaffed... I had half empty basket of French fries which is for additional cost . Didn't complain since fries were crumbling. 4 stars only for ambiance

Melody D.

Yelp
Had lunch here twice. It's kind of expensive - watch out for the $6 soda water - but we enjoyed our meals. I had the shrimp tacos and my husband had the turkey sandwich. Both were good. The sandwich could be improved with a pickle or something to give a little crunch. We had great service. All in all, we like the Gold Cup and it has a good vibe (except for the hallway seating).

Laurie W.

Yelp
2.5 stars. So, I adore the atmosphere - right smack dab in the middle of the gorgeous Salamander out in the VA countryside, you find yourself in a lovely wine bar with great views, and if you go into the billiard room you find three giant TVs, comfortable seating, and a pool table, which is a super fun atmosphere and a great place to enjoy Sunday football games - and that's exactly what my husband and I did a few Sundays back during a wedding weekend getaway at the Salamander. Now, here's the big caveat - this particular Sunday was also the last Sunday of the Middleburg film festival, and the place was JAMMED. I mean, beyond jammed to the point where we got there around 11:00am in the morning, staked out seats in front of the TV, and pretty much never left for the entire day, while people all around us fought for tables (you were mixing the film festival crowd, the Sunday brunch crowd, AND the sports-watchers crowd). So, admittingly, I wonder how much some of my experience was affected due to the sheer crowd sizes. Anyway, I digress. So, onto the food and drinks. My husband and I started with two bowls of the chili (special of the day) and since this was a brisk, chilly day, I admit it was perfect. It was delicious too. I also had a bloody mary (they made it spicy as I requested) and my husband had a beer. All was going well so far. Then, when it was time to order another round of drinks and settle in to watch the games, we waited...and waited...and waited. Probably at least 30 minutes (and this is when it started to get really crowded - to the point where a family of 3 joined a woman who was eating by herself - everyone was desperate for a table)! Once we did get the attention of our server, they were out of the first cocktail I wanted but I liked the one I ordered as a substitute (my husband kept drinking beer). After a little while longer, my husband decided to order food and ordered the LowCountry BBQ Chicken, but the server must have misheard him because what came out (after a lengthy wait, again) was the Virginian, which was pork. It was pretty loud in there by this point so maybe she heard "Virginian" when he said "Chicken"? It's possible. My husband hates pork so he requested he get the chicken, and what came out was wrong once again - the Chicken Sandwich (well...at least it was chicken). At least it was the protein he wanted so he ate it. The server apologized for the error(s) and comped one of my drinks. The food was fine - nothing special (we did both like the chili a lot). All in all, I say 2.5 stars because of the following combination: 4 for atmosphere, 2.5 for food, and 1 for service. I definitely think it wasn't all our server's fault, though - she was clearly overwhelmed by the number of people (as were other members of the staff) and that's management's fault - they should have been better prepared, gotten more staff, etc. I'll have to time my next visit to the Salamander on a non-film festival weekend!

Eleanor R.

Yelp
This place was great! Amazing service, but also delicious food! And they also give you plenty. The two night I stayed here was a pleasure. The cornbread was the best I have ever had and the strawberry donuts were out of this world. MELT IN YOUR MOUTH! You could tell that everything was made in house. OH, and the crab cake blt, BOMB!!! Full of crab meat and barely any bread! I highly recommend if you are a guest, or if you are just driving through in town.

Colleen M.

Yelp
Stopped in on Friday evening at 5 had cocktails with appetizer & dinner very nice atmosphere Alejandro our waiter was very professional and knowledgeable we will be back

Maggie M.

Yelp
One would expect a meal @ Salamander Resort & Spa in Middleburg to be perfection, especially because of the prices, but it wasn't very good. We had a party of eight for lunch and the majority said their meal was just "so-so". I had an over-cooked burger with bland fries (and they charge you extra for the fries!). Someone had a dried out rockfish sandwich and after telling the waitress it wasn't very good and ordered something else, they didn't even comp her lunch or send a manager over. I realize we are going through tough times but this is an uppity resort with high prices. Their food could use some improvement.

Leslie C.

Yelp
What happened!!! This place used to be impeccable. Now the food is absolutely terrible!!!! They must have a new chef because the food is not the same. It's poor quality! Extremely disappointed! Will not be returning.

Rachel P.

Yelp
Delicious from top to bottom. The service was excellent, the drinks were out of this world, the food was solidly good. The atmosphere quite literally cannot be beat. The price is a little high, to be honest. Though I don't really regret paying it.

Chris H.

Yelp
Had lunch out at the Wine Bar this weekend. Service and kitchen struggled. Server was super polite and quick to greet us, but once drink orders went in it took over 20 mins for us to get them. Server said bartender was "slammed", which I understand, but would expect a manager to jump back behind the bar to assist or at least come to our table to apologize. The apps we ordered took awhile to come out and were cold. So I assume they sat waiting to be served. The last issue is my child's order was screwed up, and instead of the kitchen fixing it before sending it out it was obvious they scraped off the dressing and sent it out. On the positive side, my wife had sushi which she thought was great. We have been here before and enjoyed it. Hopefully this is just a covid period bump in the road. But for what you are paying I expect the service and attention to details to be higher.

Jody B.

Yelp
We've eaten here in the past and loved their food. However, we were here last weekend for a friends birthday and none of us enjoyed our meal (7 of us). They have a new chef and the food was less than exciting. I always loved their Caesar salad. This time the lettuce didn't seem fresh and the Caesar dressing hardly tasted like Caesar dressing. Not to mention they had two slices of the anchovies sitting on top is my salad, ewww. Everyone at our table kept commenting on how they have a new chef and things aren't the same. I'm disappointed and am not looking forward to dining there again.

Dillyn K.

Yelp
I am so frustrated with this restaurant bevause it has so much potential. The servers have always been cheerful and knowleable, the food this time was great, (last time my chicken was dry and tasteless) but everything takes FOREVER service is so slow, you can easily be here for 4 hours and only have 2 drinks because it is 20 minutes before the server takes your order, 20 minutes to get it (even if you are sitting next to the bar) and then you feel like you never see your server again. If you think you might want something better order it because who knows when your server will visit again. Like i said, they have fantastic attitudes! Their menu knowledge is GREAT. But they are inattentive, which is hard to believe because of the number of servers and managers on the floor. Fritters and (whatever the deep fried things with crab meat) were both EXCELENT. Drinks were all very good.

Mike S.

Yelp
Way to make a first impression. The Salamander Resort is really big on appearance--as are its patrons--so from the jump, I felt pretty good about the place. Warm woods and a very home like feel... maybe if you're a Vanderbilt. Nevertheless, the Gold cup wine bar seems to only use pockets of well-heeled revelers as boundaries as it is literally dead center the resort's main area. There was a bar but I couldn't get to it; no matter, the seating was luxurious and comfortable enough so I didn't do my normal barfly perching. The wine and cocktail list was, of course, sufficient for me though I must agree with some of the other Yelpers that the actually food ranged from pretty good to 'are you serious?` I'm not that big on VA wines, at least not the reds I selected. Of the whites, the Jefferson select was my favorite. The others were some degree too metallic and even earthy on the nose. All in all, it's a glorious looking hangout spot with a few notable tidbits to eat. But I think the best things here come by glass...and occasionally by bottle.

Yelp
THE GLUTEN-FREE MASON JAR CHOCOLATE CAKE IS MONEY. Meaning, "ridiculously good" for all you old folks. The layers consist of rich GF-floured chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, and root beer cream. I normally hate anything root beer flavoured but the cream was subtle and very foamy. The jar is surrounded by a delicious housemade vanilla bean ice cream and toasted GF granola and hazelnuts. Seriously. The best GF dessert I've had in a long while. They rotate the menu items seasonally here but Tom, our server (who was wonderful), assured me that the chocolate cake is staying put. I think it'll be a house favourite.

Yelp
Terrible service, discriminatory staff. After staying at the resort for 4 days, we stopped by on our last evening for a cocktail. We were denied service when a table directly in front of us was being catered to, with food and beverages. The excuse made was they 'don't serve food during weekdays' Once again, there was a party in front of us being served??? The staff, including manager, wanted to keep passing the responsibility to one another, and none of them had a reconcilable answer as to why we were grossly discriminated against. Will absolutely not return.

Yelp
The Gold Cup Wine Bar becomes the only option for food and drinks at the Salamander Resort once the restaurant, Harriman's, closes. The wine is delicious and the bartenders and servers know their wine, so you can absolutely ask for a recommendation. The wine changes with the week, so the menu is always updating, but they have an extensive list of bottles both red and white. The beers on tap are all local Virginia beers which is a fun experience, and the food is delicious. I had a Knife & Fork Caesar Salad with a Crab Cake on top, and it was delicious! The wings are also a tasty (though spicy) option. If you would like to have some wine and sit in the library, stop here and close out and make your way over to a comfy chair by the fire!

Yelp
The 16$ martinis are not even full size. I just don't get it... Atleast fill up the mini martini glasses. The food is another story. The cauliflower was good . Lots of Asian sauce. The sushi however was sooooo small I could just eat the whole thing in two Bites. I don't understand why no one reads the reviews . The food needs help!!! Send for help !

Yelp
Among the dining options at Salamander Spa and Resort, the Gold Cup Wine Bar offers informal luxury, including a stool for your purse so you needn't rest it on the floor. Food is organic, sustainably produced, and locally sourced (The Chef's garden is on the premises and open for strolling or special dining). We shared three dishes. From the salad menu, the Roasted Beets with fresh whipped ewe crème and apricot pecan garnish proved satisfying. From the "Social and Sharing Plates," the Crispy Sesame Cauliflower in a sweet soy ginger glaze with coconut was a delicious adventure. Sandwiches are served with a choice of kettle chips, sweet potato tots, or a side salad. On the waiter's recommendation, we chose the Virginia sweet potato specialty. The Crabcake BLT was small but well stacked. Among the entrée offerings, southern Shrimp and Grits and the more worldly Pasta Carbonara, with suggested wine pairings, looked most enticing. The dessert menu offers a kit for s'mores to be taken out to the fire pit, next to the spa's outdoor infinity pool. Another local twist pairs pumpkin doughnuts with maple crème anglaise and toasted meringue.

Yelp
Order 2 flights, a gnocchi, bran cake blt and some fries. Fries were so-so. Everything else was good. They brought us the wrong flight, so be careful.

Yelp
I love this little place! It's perfect on a nice day....bring a friend sit outside and have a cocktail and some yummy apps! Perfect impromptu girls happy hours spot!

Yelp
Our overall experience was not great. It took 20-30 minutes for our bottle of wine to show up to the table. It says wine bar in the name but we were tasting our bottle of wine when our food arrived. The food was ok but definitely not worth the price paid. The resort was very pretty and the staff is very friendly but I am not sure how it is rated five star. We will give it one more try but not overly impressed so far.

Yelp
Talk about getting away for a weekend... this is a nice place to do it. This nouveau equestrian spa retreat in its spacious and incredibly appointed facility while simultaneously keeping you in the 21st Century trips you back to the 1800s! The amenities here took careful and intent planning in fulfilling a dream that serves to sooth the visitors' angst and weariness coming here is meant to do. Their restaurant, well appointed, relaxing, spacious and incredibly furnished is only topped by the cuisine, its presentation and its worthiness to the overall endeavor of putting this place together. Although we decided on light fare, our orders of Middleburger, a Pasta sided by a Cecci Chianti and a Whitehall Viognier. These were excellent choices. So impressed by this, we plan on going back to spend more time, and eat much more!

Yelp
The food and service were both seriously lacking. I would have rated it only one star but I gave it two because the drinks were very good. It is worth coming here for the drinks only. The food (we ordered the rigatoni with pesto and portabello burger) was a notch above inedible and the service was incredibly slow for such an expensive hotel. My husband and I stayed here for a weekend getaway and the hotel itself is amazing and gorgeous - but they really need to upgrade the food to match!

Yelp
I cannot say enough great things about Gold Cup - and especially now that they changed the menu back to include sushi. Most of all, I wanted to provide the highest accolades for the assistant manager, Walter Jinks. He exudes customer service and knows exactly how to treat each customer as if they are the only one there. Wonderful job again to the Salamander for hiring the highest caliber staff that cares about their customers. We are repeat customers and will continue to be with Walter around.

Yelp
Shared 3 starters with my travel companion for lunch one day. Wow! From the crispy sesame cauliflower to the burrata to the milanese rissotto friters, yum!!! Paired them with the blood orange 75. Topped it all off with tea and their specialty donuts in the library. Amazing indulgent meal that I would go out of my way and drive back to repeat all over again.

Yelp
This is my second time here, and sadly, I am disappointed again. My first time here I had a (very expensive) burger which was mediocre. Needless to say, at such a beautiful establish as the Salamder Resort I had higher expectations. This time I ordered the hummus for an appetizer and the tortilla soup as an entre. The hummus was made with green pea instead of chick pea...gross. Moreover, the tortilla soup tasted nothing like any tortilla soup I have had before (maybe I'm biased living in Texas though). It's texture was too creamy and it tastes smokey. Ultimate conclusion, I will not eat here again. Harriman's however, is wonderful. Highly recommend it for brunch.

Yelp
Ordered 2 flights of Virginia wines, one for him and one for me. Both flights were amazingly great! So much so we took a trip to one of the vineyards where one was the wines are produced! The crab cake blt is what you should order! And the cauliflower appetizer. You can skip the shrimp and grits unless you "must" have them....overall great food and great wine list!

Yelp
Very average service. Expect a lot more from a"nice" , over priced place. Takes more effort than it should to get decent table service for over priced food and drinks.

Yelp
What a wonderful surprise to check into the resort, stomach growling, and discover the AMAZING food at this resort restaurant. I almost don't want to tell anybody how good the cauliflower bits are because it's hard to believe. Can you image cauliflower that tastes exactly like General Tso's chicken (minus the calories)?? Well, it's true. I ate it every day I was at the resort. I found the sangria to be very good and the attentive staff was an extra. I didn't eat at the other restaurant but I'm sure it's just as good. I'm looking forward to my next visit during the holiday season. If you're thinking about going to check this place out......just do it!!! Thank me later
