The Best Bars in Birmingham, Alabama | Eater Atlanta

"Golden Age isn’t just a wine shop—it’s a haven for natural wine lovers and anyone searching for their next favorite independent winery. The Mountain Brook retailer and bar has an incredible selection, especially if you’re a fan of orange wine, sparkling wine, or Champagne (There’s a whole room just for it!) and knowledgeable staff. They also hold educational tasting events and host pop-ups for local businesses, complete with a wine pairing. Last year, Golden Age was nominated for a James Beard award for outstanding wine program." - Sarra Sedghi

A real gem! Golden Age Wines is a lovely place to spend an evening exploring some unique wines selected by people who are passionate about their craft. Let's get straight to the wines: they are consistently excellent. One of my favorite ways to try their selection is to go with my girlfriend and each get a 3-pour flight of 2-ounce glasses of wine, giving us six wines to try together. The staff are very knowledgeable, we almost always ask for their advice and they have not steered us wrong yet. With all the wine you're tasting you might get a little hungry - try the charcuterie or the pizza bagel! While you won't find an exhaustive food menu here, their food choices are all great. The location is fantastic and the space is warm and inviting, with a lovely little tasting room in the back. They have a great selection of bottles along the walls and have a refrigerated section if you need to take a white wine to a dinner party expeditiously. Finally, they have a Tuesday tastings series called Terroir Tuesdays that are a fun chance to learn about a specific group of wines with expert input. Look for more details on their website. In short, next time you're looking for a place to meet someone (or your special someone) for a drink, or find a new wine you love, or need to grab a quick host gift, give Golden Age Wine a shot and you won't be sorry!

Google
Golden Age is classy without being pretentious. The sommeliers go out of their way to chat and make sure the overall experience is a positive one - and they really know their wine well, to boot! We went for wine and apps for my mother’s birthday and had such a lovely experience. I couldn’t believe how expansive their selection was, either! The shop is much deeper than it appears with something for any palate!

Google
Loved the wine selections on the shelves! But the menu for testing was not great! The Bubbles and rosé was stale! The first 2oz of my red was stale as well, but the next serving was better! The atmosphere was great! The service was good! Will come back again for a bottle instead of from the menu next time though.

Google
Great experience! Large and excellent choice of wines. Very good tapas, I highly recommend the smoked scallops and warm olives. Very knowledgable sommelier staff and lovely atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Google
One of my favorite movies places to go for a glass of wine in Birmingham. All of the people who work there really know their stuff and you can ask them for recommendations while you eat oven baked olives and enjoy the vinos from all over the world.

Google
Absolutely gem! Girls Trip and walked right up on this hidden jewel. A full wine bar with menu options. We were served by Hanna, greeted as soon as we entered. Sweet personality. We ordered a snack, Grilled Cheese w/arugula salad and 2021 Leoncio Cinsault red wine. Delicious. We had the pleasure of meeting Trent, co-owner. He was very hospitable as we enjoyed the space in the back. It was giving all kinds of relaxing vibes. Very intimate. Cozy.

Google
The BEST wine selection in all of Birmingham. Alan and I have tried about 6 different bottles over the past few months based off staff recommendations and each one was perfect. A personal favorite, the Gaspard Rosé, who’s description is as follows: the taste of sunshine and the color of sunlight through a window after the rain✨I cannot wait to have a moment free of children to experience a date night at their beautiful bar instead of just swinging by to bring a bottle home! Á votre santé 🍷

Google
Golden Age Wine is a very special wine bar and shop. Their selection is unmatched in Alabama. Brandon and Trent have truly created the perfect environment to shop and drink wine. Mack and their other staff possess a lot of knowledge on all of their bottles and can lead you to select something you will truly love. Don't miss out on the events they put on as they are always a ton of fun.

Yelp
I have visited Golden Age several times! Just be prepared thar this is a bit more expensive due to the hugh quality of product. They do offer bits to nimble on. I enjoy the bread and butter with a glass of orange wine. If you are looking for a unique bottle of wine, the employees are very knowledgeable. You will find bottles here that you aren't able to find anywhere else!

Yelp
YOU ARE THE WINE I WANT! Came to Golden Age in celebration of their 5 year anniversary. So happy for them! Wine bars can either be hit or miss.., but I am so happy the Golden Age is still moving along strong! Golden Age is a wine bar in Mountain Brook. They offer wine tastings and pairings.. the whole nine. But they are definitely on the pricer side of things. Everyone who works here is super knowledgeable and gives great customer service. The amount of wine sold in store is unlike anything you would be able to find anywhere else in the city. If you are looking for a specific type of wine or just need recommendations the Golden Age guys are the people to talk to. I highly recommend this shop!

Yelp
This place deserves more than 4 Stars but not quite 5. Why you may ask? Well it isn't the most hospital environment to enjoy your wine if it is crowded. Also, the lack of soft surfaces makes carrying on a conversation with whoever you're with nearly impossible. Other gripes? - I wish the wines were organized by region and not by type. - The $20 corkage fee is absolutely egregious. This isn't Manhattan and nor is your place a fine dining establishment. - The parking sucks.

Yelp
What a modern chic intimate setting. Gives a relax and sip vibe while you enjoy the music and the beautiful wine walls. The staff is beyond friendly and attentive, always with a smile. Y'all there are some of those French wines I just can't pronounce ( don't judge me ) but the way the staff was so kind with letting me know what I was ordering, I was able to learn the name of a couple and feel comfortable with ordering others without just pointing and saying this one. They have an array of wines to choose from and your welcome to choose from the walls which to take home or re-cork and sip.We were able to sample many with the wine flight option and we choose the cheese board which was delicious. Trust me I'll be back the vibes to cool not to.

Yelp
What a great place for wine flights! We were just driving through from Louisville and the whiskey distilleries. We were ready for wine! This place is a gem. We had two different flights for each of us and the Trifecta charcuterie board. And also warmed olives with seeds. The staff was so friendly.

Yelp
absolutely loved this place! its one of my favorite wine bars here in Birmingham, and i highly recommend to anyone looking for a chill, vibey atmosphere to sit back and enjoy some delicious wine and small bites. our server was wonderful and so knowledgeable on all things wine and cheeses. this would be the perfect place for a first date, drinks with friends, or even just by yourself.

Yelp
Modern upscale but relaxed atmosphere tucked in a strip mall setting. Service was great. Staff was very knowledgeable. They made great recommendations based on just a few questions. The burrata with olive oil and crostini toast was a star. Creamy heaven on perfectly toasted bread. The 3 cheeses on the board were well balanced. Not pictured is the bread and olive oil dish. This was our least favorite dish. The olive oil was good quality but the bread was lackluster for us. If it were toasted it may have been better but for a plain piece of bread it just didn't add to the dish. Sort of like wheat bread from subway. We had two white wines based on their recommendations that were lovely. We even got a bottle of each to take home.

Yelp
This was my first visit to Golden Age Wine but it won't be my last. They have an amazing selection of wines to purchase and take home or you can enjoy the bottle there for a corking fee. They have some nice foods to nibble on such as charcuterie boards, bread and olive oil, warmed olives, etc. They also serve wine by the glass and have a nice selection to chose from. I had a glass of Shiraz, which was delicious. I cannot recall the brand. I enjoyed the bread and olive oil as well as some warmed olives. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I would see this as a great place for a happy hour gathering, or a simple pause for a glass of wine.

Yelp
I don't like wine, but I'm always down to go to new places. I came to this place last week with friends. Due to Covid, they are currently only allowing outside seating which was fine cause the weather was nice and the outside was very pretty. I looked at the menu but nothing piqued my interest. The waiters made suggestions like rose but I knew I wasn't going to enjoy it, so I got their kombucha. They had a harvest roots kombucha which the waitress gave me in a wine glass so you couldn't even tell it wasn't wine. I didn't love the taste of the kombucha since I've had others that were tastier, but loved that I had a non-wine option! Customer service was amazing. Every single waiter and waitress was extremely friendly and patient. I plan to try their charcuterie boards if I come back.

Yelp
A nifty wine shop. Naturally, it's in the Little Kingdom, so everything is slightly overpriced. The atmosphere is clean and crisp. There a couple of nice boards to nosh on.

Yelp
My daughters and I were able to try this wonderful wine bar last week when they were both home. The atmosphere was great and they have a really nice selection of wine (especially from Burgundy) which was nice to find. Had a cheese and charcuterie board which was also top notch. Actually tried an "orange" wine for the first time and really enjoyed the entire experience.

Yelp
Great little place. Wine lovers will REALLY enjoy it. Food selection is small, but very tasty!

Yelp
I am really impressed with this place. Located in the heart of Mountain Brook. The owners are friendly and very knowledgeable. They have quite the selection to purchase and plenty of options to order by the glass. Not to mention various small bites. This is the perfect place for a girls night or date night. I will definitely make this one of my go to wine bars.
google avatar

Yelp
Oh my gosh. I am so so happy I discovered this place. This wine is so incredible and it takes a very talented person to find and sell great wines like these. Bham is so lucky to have this place.

Yelp
My friend introduced me to this place and I love it now! This is such a great after work chill spot. The 50/50 board is so good. They'll let you try any wine and the staff is so nice. I tried orange wine for the first time here and loved it! This will definitely be a once a week spot for me.

Yelp
We stopped by Golden Age Wine for drinks after dinner this past Friday night when we were visiting Birmingham for the weekend. It's a neighborhood wine shop with a LARGE selection of wines for sale as well as many wines by the glass or in flights AND some food options. Golden Age Wine specializes in natural wines ("natural wine" isn't always defined the same way, but Golden Age Wine's website says that they are "committed to offering wines grown sustainably with little to no intervention in the winemaking process...."), which I've gotten very interested in lately! We started with a flight (3 wines of your choice from their menu). The wines we selected were different (2 reds, 1 orange/skin-contact) and interesting. We then got another glass of wine. We didn't eat on this occasion as we'd just eaten a full dinner including dessert, but the food we saw (cheese plate/olive oil cake) looked delicious! We also didn't shop on this occasion, but I was shocked by the shop's size - it's really large and had so many more wines for sale than I was expecting! It's also gorgeous inside - it would be at home in Nashville or Los Angeles or New York. Very modern, chic, cool. We really enjoyed our experience, and I'd be back frequently if we lived in Birmingham! Nashville doesn't have a wine shop/bar like this, and I'm jealous!

Yelp
We love coming here, stopped by yesterday with a group of 7 and sat by the window. Love the aesthetic, wine selection, and customer service. First time ordering a board and loved it! Will deff be back!

Yelp
Nice new winery in mountain brook my wife has been keeping her eye on. We came in on Sunday funday and decided to have a rosé she has been wanting to try. The owner is very nice and helpful. They have a ton of different wines to choose from. It seems like a great space to have a gathering and wind down from a busy week of work. The music playlist was very chill also which is a plus. Will definitely come back

Yelp
Beautiful romantic Scandinavian bar with a great selection of wines and charcuterie boards. Prettiest interior design in all of Bham in my opinion

Nia B.

Yelp
This is such a great date night place. The environment was very relaxed. The customer service was great and wine was even better.

Isabella S.

Yelp
Absolutely LOVE this place! They have an amazing selection of wine and the 50/50 plate is my go to. It's the most intimate spot you can find in Birmingham. You won't regret coming here!

Maddie D.

Yelp
I've been to Golden Age multiple times since they first opened. Beautifully designed space and amazing wine selection. The first time I came with some girlfriends and the staff was so kind + approachable! Golden Age is definitely my favorite pick for a date night out or an evening with the girls. I always bring my family here when they're visiting from out of town. There's just nothing else like it in Birmingham! And that younger looking guy, I think his name starts with a J, has a fantastic personality. A true gem. Definitely made the experience. 10/10 would recommend visiting Golden Age.

Yelp
This is my favorite place in Birmingham. The environment of Golden Age is classy, calming, and peaceful. The employees are incredibly kind and attentive to customers. I often stop by in the morning times and get a pour over coffee. This is a favorite spot for my friends and I to spend time together. I cannot recommend this place enough to anyone who is looking for a place to spend time with friends and family.

Yelp
What a fantastic spot! We read about Golden Age Wine in Food and Wine Magazine. We decided to stop by and pick up a few wines for our chill night back at the hotel. First off, I have to say, the space is lovely! Bustling with the young and hip crowd of Birmingham/Mountain Brook area. It was very busy. We went about the store checking out wines and I asked a young lady behind the counter for a rose recommendation and she showed me her faves and I picked up one of those ( it was fantastic btw) and then when we were checking out, we chat for quite a bit with one of the owners and he was super friendly and told us a bit about his story and even gave us some restaurant recommendations. I would totally hang out here if I'm ever back in the area. Had a great experience and would highly recommend!

Yelp
You either think this is the place is the best ever or you're wrong. Apparently my review isn't as fleshed-out as Yelp would like. I'll say that I'm confused as to why this place isn't rated as six stars.

S L.

Yelp
Fabulous wine selection curated by friendly experts. Delicious food and comfortable seating. What could be better? I can't think of anything.
google avatar

Camille D.

Yelp
This place is the perfect spot to enjoy some wine and some light bites on a date or with friends. It is a wine shop and wine bar in one, and they have a truly immense selection of bottles from around the world with about 10 by the glass options. The space is incredibly beautiful, warm and inviting with immense attention to detail. They have bar seating as well as some two top tables and a couple of larger tables. It also appeared like they have a small space in the back that would be amenable to use as a small event space. I found the wine by the bottle for purchase to bring home very reasonable. I know that every other restaurant marks us their wine from the retail cost, but it just seems hard for me to shell out an extra 20$ corkage fee to drink it there when I could just bring it home. Either way I found my new fave place to buy interesting bottles!
google avatar

Kyle C.

Yelp
Great friendly and knowledgeable staff! Birmingham's best place for natural wines! Their meat and cheese boards are fantastic too!
google avatar

Craig S.

Yelp
Purchasing wine can oftentimes be a frustrating, confusing, and expensive venture. I find myself staring in the wine aisle for 30 minutes reading reviews attempting to make a perfect choice. Brandon and Trent, and the rest of the staff at Golden Age, easily bring things to the ground level for those of us who lack in our wine proficiency. They never upsell you unless it fits what you are looking for. The space is beautifully designed, the service is excellent, and seriously the best prices for the best selection of wine you can find in town. So if you want to buy wine as gift and know nothing about wine, or if you want nerd out with some passionate people about an amazing Grenache, or just grab a couple glasses with your babe and enjoy some charcuterie, THIS IS YOUR SPOT!

Yelp
I've been to Golden Age a few times since they've opened. Great space and wine selection! The first time I was with a group of people and felt like the sever was being really rude. I thought maybe it was just me or he didn't like me for some reason but I asked someone else and they said they had the same experience. He was the younger looking guy. I think his name started with a J. Anyways, his attitude and personality was not welcoming and ruined the educational and relaxing experience I came for.

Tim W.

Yelp
My wife and I recently visited this business. I was very impressed with their wine selection. It could be a fun place for friends to gather for a few bottles of wine. Everything about the place was impressive. The Owners are very knowledgeable. I was very disappointed when I bought an expensive bottle of wine and was charged a corkage fee of $20. The other wine places I visit do not charge a corkage fee. While full service restaurants will often charge a corkage fee if you bring your own bottle, Ive never heard of anyone charging corkage when you buy their wine. Im afraid this will hurt this otherwise fine establishment. I could buy a nice bottle of wine for what they charge in corkage fees. Thanks

Yelp
The best wine bar and retail in Birmingham. The selection is very unique and you can't beat the atmosphere.

Yelp
upate... i am so sad my personal wine assistant is gone!!! ! i did not.like the attitude of the new staff... not going back... sad.

Yelp
Thoughtful organic wine selection is just the beginning of the vision for this elegant gem. Thanks for the wonderful service we received on our recent visit. We will be back!

Tammy D.

Yelp
We love GOLDEN AGE WINE!!!! Their staff is so nice and very knowledgeable in their wine. I highly recommend this place. We went once on a weekday and once on a Friday night, was waited on right away both times. The atmosphere was nice and very clean. Check it out BHAM!!! They will not disappoint!!!

Josiah M.

Yelp
In short, Golden Age is a vibe. It's got a cool bar area, great tables to chill on a date or hang out and a really great table that could host some small parties. But the best part is how accessible Golden Age is for an everyday guy like me. Let's be honest here, wine is tough. There's SO many options that it's overwhelming. The staff at Golden Age does a great job of translating my preferences into a wine that tastes great without coming across as rude. And there's options for all types of budgets as well! Can't recommend it enough - you'll love it!

Tyler N.

Yelp
Great new spot. Love the feel of openness & community around an amazing wine selection & really well done charcuterie. I'm not primarily a wine guy but the expertise & passion of the owners enables me to appreciate excellent wine selections. If you appreciate things well done, you'll love Golden Age.
