Eat Like a Chef: Neil Perry’s Food Guide To Sydney

"Golden Century Seafood This two-level Cantonese palace—connected by an escalator—is lined with tanks of live fish, crustaceans, and bivalves, which the staff will stir-fry, steam, salt-and-pepper, and douse in XO sauce to your heart's delight. There are many reasons the Chinatown establishment is beloved among in-the-know locals and hospitality veterans, and they extend from the warm, welcoming service all the way through the exquisite live abalone sashimi, mud crab hot pot, and private reserve range of wines. For a Chinese food adventure, arrive late (this place is open until 4 a.m.) and order straight from the live tanks. At least, that’s what the rock stars, politicians, and CBD chefs just getting off work do."

A nice Chinese restaurant with delicious food. Great location. Staff is friendly. Lots of food choice with seafood, meat and vegetables to suit different tastes. Service is good and we didn’t wait for long to have our dishes delivered.

Gone is the buzz and frenzy of a long awaited night at Golden Century replaced by a beautifully appointed decor (definitely cleaner no question) A+ for staff attitude, the service wasn’t on point far from it and they had better things to do like fold napery….to be replaced by a … very pricey Chinese restaurant- it was just another fancy restaurant without the service one would normally expect (Golden Century was always about two things the frenzy and food) and well the buzz and amazing energy is gone, it might be different in larger groups of say 15-20 but otherwise Sydney has so many amazing options where you don’t need to pay xxxxxxxx and deal with average service, anyway I will relish the memories and search for another Golden Century

Had a weekend dim sum session here and while the choices were limited but the flavors were good and met expectations. The food was served hot which was nice, but there wasn’t anything impressive.

Loved it. Service was good and the quality of the food is excellent. You can really tell the freshness in the fresh produce and seafood/meat. Seafood is picked right out of the tank for you to see and they really know how to cook it. An excellent sellection of wine in their cellar too. International and a lot of Australian too. I can understand the hype and why Sydney's chefs come here after service.

Golden Century has been a popular Sydney Chinese restaurant for many years amongst locals and travellers. It is two levels and huge inside, with lots of tables perfect for large groups. There are even a few private rooms that can fit around 30+ guests. There is an escalator to the second level, which is where you can find the bathrooms. The food is delicious and comes out really quick and the service staff are pretty friendly.

It is unclear why this restaurant is so crowded. Even by Australian standards the food is very expensive, and it is only of acceptable quality and taste. Across the 13 dishes we ordered, from clams to duck to tofu, most of them tasted good enough from a small restaurant. We had to constantly try to get attention from the staff for any service, and the temperature was quite cold. There is a large wine rack with hundreds of bottles, perhaps this the reason people want to line up and drink expensive wine (we don't drink). There are plenty of other choices in and around this restaurant, my recommendation is to try one of them.

A Sydney Institution and for good reason. Golden Century has been dishing up absolutely delicious Cantonese food for decades. Frequented by Sydneys top chefs, after knock off, it is a lunch time venue, dinner venue and late night venue. Wonderful for big groups with very generous serving sizes. Seafood always top grade and super fresh.

One of the best Chinese Seafood Restaurants in Sydney and they still got it. I've been here for the business meetings, for dates, for hangover cure and more. Duck pancake, crab, lobster and Pipis are fantastic here. So as long as you order these, you'll have a golden food journey.
