The Best Iconic Restaurant Dishes and Foods in Detroit | Eater Detroit

"Aside from the iconic coney dog, the Greek salads that come out of the region’s casual eateries and Greek American restaurants are another Detroit-area specialty. They usually include a combination of lettuce, tomato, pepperoncini peppers, feta cheese, olives, chickpeas, and beets — which are frequently also incorporated into the dressing, giving it a pinkish hue. This dish goes great with a gyro, lamb chops, or solo for a satisfying lunch. Golden Fleece also accepts reservations and online ordering is available." - Serena Maria Daniels

Just wanted to give a shout out to Golden Fleece for making my first stop in Detroit very memorable and delicious!!! Thanks to our waitress Lisa, a co-worker and I had an excellent lunch and without a doubt the best Gyros I have ever had!!!! She started us off with some sausage on fire and it was amazing!! The Gyros I ordered had the lamb meat and it was some of the most tender and juicy meat I've ever had!! I was in the Detroit area for work and right out of the airport we stopped at Golden Fleece and it was phenomenal. If you are visiting Detroit then do yourself a favor and stop here you won't be disappointed.

Google
*lamb gyro actually tastes like lamb* The food was really good! I got the dinner for two and every item had its own twist perhaps a different type of spice or inclusion of a different vegetable that you’re not used to. Sauces were good, staff was very nice and waitress attentive. Atmosphere was urban and a nice stray from classical Greek dining decor. Will be back!

Google
Golden Fleece was exactly what I was looking for when it came to Greek cuisine. I knew going in I wanted to try one of their gyros because of the hype I had read about the restaurant and the quality of their gyros. It did not disappoint. The flavors were delectable, and the chicken was juicy/tender. I did opt for an appetizer, and when I asked which the server would choose from, she suggested the dolmas, which, although small, were the perfect starter. The ambiance was elegant without the fine dining price tag. Overall, I will be back. The service I will admit was a bit absent at times, and even for one person, they do add the gratuity, which is perfectly fine. I just didn't know that right away.

Wow! This Greek restaurant is an absolute treasure! As someone who knows their Greek food coming from Chicago, I can honestly say this place is a standout. It's not just the most incredible Greek cuisine I've enjoyed in ages, but the service is truly exceptional. Ashley was simply wonderful! She was so attentive and genuinely kind, making our lunch feel like we were catching up with an old friend in their home. What truly impressed us was that she remembered my husband and I from our single visit two months ago – that's the kind of personal touch you just don't find everywhere. Thank you for such a delightful experience! The drive is absolutely worth it, and we can't wait to come back again soon.

Google
Golden Fleece in Greektown is phenomenal! From the moment we walked in, we were immersed in an authentic Greek atmosphere—warm, lively, and full of charm. The service was absolutely amazing—friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The lamb chops were the best I’ve ever had—perfectly cooked, flavorful, and tender. The beet and arugula salad was also spot on—fresh, tangy, and beautifully balanced. The ambiance, food, and hospitality all come together to make this place a standout. Definitely coming back with friends—this place is a gem!

Google
BAD experience! I was excited to try Golden Fleece based on the reviews. I ordered a chicken souvlaki sandwich, which was good. However, half way through I thought I was biting into a piece of the chicken bone but it turned out to be a toothpick with the plastic wrapper around it! I pointed it out to the Server and she told me that’s how the sandwich is served!!! That the sandwich comes with a toothpick with a plastic wrapper!!! I asked for the Manager who never showed up and since I lost my appetite, I asked for the check and she came back with a bill for the sandwich! I didn’t appreciate being lied to - the manager not showing up - and not even the courtesy to discount it! I paid and didn’t think she deserved a tip!! I am curious if anyone else has had the chicken souvlaki sandwich with a toothpick that had the plastic wrapper on it??? Check out the pics!

Google
This is a gem of Greek food restaurant. Being from Chicago, I am very picky about Greek food. This restaurant provides not only the best Greek food I've had in a long time, but the service is top shelf. John was fabulous. He is attentive and kind. It was an experience like having a meal at a old family friend's home. Thank you. We will make the drive and be back soon.

Google
I am not a fan of Greek food and was out voted by a group which is what landed me here. I came in with a snobbish attitude because “I don’t like Greek food.” Everyone thought it a good idea to start with a bunch of different apps that they thought I would enjoy. Thus we ordered the calamari, octopus, Saganaki (flaming cheese), and three spreads — hummus, Tirokafteri, and Skordalia. Much to my surprise I thoroughly enjoyed most of it. I knew I would like the calamari because I like calamari lol. I also love all seafood — I eat anything out of the ocean so it was easy for the octopus to win me over. The flaming cheese was a surprise delight! However, I did not like any of the spreads 🫤 It was mostly a texture versus taste issue for me. Everyone else in my party LOVED the spreads. Nonetheless, I did eat my date share of the pita bread that came with the spreads. The pita was warm, soft and yummy!! I chose to eat the combo meal for my entree which included a gyro and a kebab. It was a mountain of food!! It was waaaaay more than I was expecting. Needless to say, I left with a to-go tray of what could easily be two additional meals. This was definitely something that could have easily been shared. The size of the entree aside, the taste was phenomenal. To top it all off, the customer service was nothing short of AMAZING!! Our waitress was helpful, intuitive and super friendly. She shared lots of historical nuggets with us. She nearly felt like family by the time we left as we had talked about children and families by this point. She was exceptional! And the place is “cute” and gets an A from me for atmosphere. If you haven’t been sold by now, I’ll make it plain — don’t overlook this place!! P.S. I almost forgot I had two of the best Kentucky Mules I’ve ever had!!

Yelp
Loved this place from the outside and the ambience as you walked in made you forget you were in Detroit. The service was great! When I sat down a waitress came up to me and I found out later she wasn't even my waitress she was being a great team member while my waitress was busy The food was not a let down after the great start from everything else. Calamari was solid but the star of the show was the gyro. Best I've ever had. The lamb was so fresh and cut thick like I've never had before. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Went in last week for the first time since it was remodeled. At first I was surprised and a little worried with it losing its old school diner touch, but the new ambiance was very warm and pleasant, and we were very happy with both the service and food! Had a server named Lisa who provided superb customer service, and Candace made a fantastic Greek Coffee! Food was amazing, split a few dishes with a friend. The presentation of the food was very nice, and everything tasted great. The lamb from the gyro was well seasoned and melted in your mouth, spinach pie filling and perfectly flaky, and saganaki was delicious! Would definitely recommend!

Yelp
Fast and friendly service. Lovely ambiance. Live piano playing on Tuesday evenings. Nice outside patio in warm weather. Excellent wine. We enjoyed tasty dips and fabulous saganaki (flaming cheese) as appetizers. You gotta get the saganaki. It's a classic and always fun to see them light it in front of you. I thoroughly enjoyed the Village Wrap. Great vegetarian option. I loved the Golden Fries, seasoned well, crispy and topped with feta. The mousaka was enjoyable too. My friends enjoyed their gyros. Excellent baklava too.
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall with yummy Greek food and amazing service! The saganaki was set on fire right by our table and served with fresh pita. The calamari was nice and crispy, not too oily or salty. Gyros were huge with lots of meat and sauce. The lamb was not salty at all and could easily feed two people.
google avatar

Sam L.

Yelp
Golden Fleece is cozy little hole-in-the-wall gem with great service and a super welcoming vibe. We ordered the lamb gyro, saganaki, calamari, and baklava. The lamb gyro was huge, packed with tender, flavorful meat. The saganaki was a showstopper--love the dramatic flaming presentation! Calamari was perfectly crispy, and the baklava was the perfect sweet finish. Not too sweet. Definitely a spot worth visiting if you're craving delicious Greek food!

Yelp
The Golden Fleece is one of the best OG classic Greek restaurants in the United States. I love Greek food and have visited dozens of Greek restaurants throughout the country. I am completely dumbfounded by the 3.5 rating. The ambience is old-school Greek. Very comfortable, Greek rustic, interesting, cool, functional, clean, accommodating, and updated with charger outlets to charge your cell phone at every table. If you are looking for a lamb Gyro, this is the place to go. The Gyro meat is not mystery meat, it is 100% lamb. The Flaming Saganaki cheese is tasty and fun. The lamb skewers are the equivalent of Waygu beef. Everything was delicious.

Yelp
One of the best authentic Greek restaurants I have been to in a while. i visited here in Greektown BC ( before covid) and it was authentic but tired. They now have made some improvements and taken on the next door building. The lemon rice soup (avgolemono) and the santa marina soups were so good I ordered a quart to take home. The gryo and the chicken gryo sandwiches were fresh and good portions. We finished with coffee and homemade desserts. Prices were reasonable and service was great. I will return

Yelp
I went by today to get a carry out which consisted of an order Mousaka, lamb shank and Greek salad. Mousaka is suppose to be layered with egg plant and either ground lamb or ground beef. IT HAD NOOOOO EGGPLANT WHATSOEVER!!. This was disappointing!! The lamb shank was a nice size and tender. The Greek salad had a pinkess salad dressing that did not bring out the taste of a Greek salad. And no Greek bread. Over all I give them a 1 out of 5. Will not go back !! Next Day : wife got sick with stomach cramping through the night from the food. BEWARE !!

Yelp
I visited here with my family recently and I really really enjoyed my meal. I had the short rib from the hot bar which came with two sides and a soup. I chose potato wedges and green beans, and turkey chili. Let me just tell you, I was NOT expecting that! For such a quick preparation, I honestly had lower standards, but no, it was GREAT! The short rib was just amazing. Tender, flavorful, meaty. Even as leftovers, it was perfect. The sides were surprisingly flavorful too. I paired the turkey chili with some ritz crackers since I got carry out, and just yum. The employees here are so sweet and kind, so it was a positive experience as well. We were welcomed to take a seat while we waited for our food. I'd recommend!

Yelp
Loved the Calamari and Saganaki. As someone who's super lactose intolerant I say the cheese and pita was worth it. I had the lamb gyro. I'm typically not a fan of lamb but it was really well done. Generous portion on the meat and not too salty like how I've had it before.

Yelp
A wonderful Greek restaurant in Greektown! We thoroughly enjoyed the calamari, two orders of saganaki, and lamb souvlaki. The Greek Manhattan was also excellent. Saganaki is always my favorite, and it was so delicious we ordered it twice. The calamari was simple yet incredibly juicy and flavorful. We loved everything! Just a note--tip was already included for two people.

Yelp
This place was amazing!!! The food was so good and the service was amazing as well. Get the grilled shrimp over rice in that red sauce. Too good

Yelp
Visiting Detroit for the Doja concert! This restaurant felt so cozy and the service was wonderful. Everyone enjoyed their meal. We excitedly yelled OPAAAAA with our flaming cheese. What a fun and exciting presentation! I'm definitely stopping by again in the future. Thanks for having us!!

Yelp
This location is one of the best places in downtown Detroit always love my time at this restaurant. The gyros are to die for french fries are very good all the French vegetables and the pita I have absolutely no complaints about the Golden Fleece and I will continue to go there every day

Yelp
Food and service is still top notch here. I used to visit this restaurant regularly with my father before I left Michigan. We had to start with the saganacki which my husband had never had before. He had the lamb shank and I ordered the lamb kabob as my entree. Lisa was incredible and made our experience wonderful. This restaurant is cozy and inviting.

Stephanie T.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years and it never disappoints! I was there yesterday for lunch and it was delicious as always. Our server Leisa was so fun and positive with a great wine recommendation I had the usual gyro and saganaki but the star was the octopus salad. Delicious!
google avatar

Andrea D.

Yelp
Aileen was a GREAT waitress. The Parisian style outdoor seating is charming. The pastitsio is the bomb & the lemon potatoes are mwah!!!! I wouldn't order the ground lamb kebab again (dry), but the rice & red sauce that comes with it is delish.

Rachel A.

Yelp
Visited with a large group post auto-show as a work lunch and everyone absolutely loved it! They were able to take such a big group pretty last minute and were happy to do so! The service was top notch, very tentative, even with such a group. Leaving the restaurant everyone was really impressed and noted we will have to come back next year. Highly highly recommend! The calamari and classic Gyros were crowd favorites!

Yelp
After going through the plethora of restaurants in the downtown Detroit area, I decided to venture into Greektown and Golden Fleece Restaurant (owing to my love of Greek mythology). Having spent a few days in Larnaca and also growing up in a country with a large Hellenic community, I had a high but realistic expectation of what was to come. The young lady (Pauline) took a moment to attend to me as she was with a customer. I was seated by the bar area and was able to appreciate the restaurant decor (and it is very charming). After exploring the appetizer options, I settled on the halloumi per Jose's (my server) recommendation and it did not disappoint. Not only was the dish aesthetically presented, it also tasted fabulous. For the entree I opted for the combo (lamb gyro and chicken kebab with fries) after having seen a photo online. This is where things went a little south for me. The chicken kebab was tender and moist but lacked any real flavor. The gyro was just okay in all honesty even though it was soft. The tzatziki tasted like what I could buy at Costco. The fries weren't too bad being fresh cut. The dish as a whole fell short because aside from the kebab, everything else was lukewarm or on the cold side. Service - just okay. I was observing Pauline and the other waiter checking on tables and offering service with a smile. Jose checked on me once after the appetizer and that was it. What also annoyed me was adding a 20% gratuity without my consent. You don't tip yourself; the customer tips based on your service. Will I come back again? I'd like to but I am hesitant and to echo the reviews of others, this establishment needs to work on their service. Next time I am in Detroit I intend to try other Greek restaurants for comparison and review. In light of the above, I go with 3 stars and I am being a little generous.

Charissa O.

Yelp
I have been a customer of Golden Fleece Restaurant forever, ever and though the decor has changed, staple staff members have retired, the food has remained on par. There's is little to not like about GFR but, surely it is worth a visit to experience a staple and heart of the Motor City restaurant experience when visiting.

Yelp
This is one of very few Greek restaurants in Greektown and their food is excellent. We came in between lunch and dinner so we were the only ones eating. We go saganaki, spanakopita, skordalia, Greek salad, and calamari to share. Everything arrived quickly because we were the only ones here. Pita triangles came with the saganaki and the skordalia and they were nice and warm - perfectly crisped exterior and soft interior. The calamari had a flavorful breading and it was more crispy than you usually see with calamari. The spanakopita was a tad soggy but I usually expect that if you don't get it straight from the oven. The restaurant is clean with a welcoming decor. While the space is small, they have lots of tables. I highly recommend!

Yelp
Good food but a bit pricey. We got: - Saganaki: easily it was probably the best saganaki that we've ever tried. The cheese had a nice char on the edges and on the bottom, but the inside was still melty. It had a really nice saltiness that went super well with the pita pieces that it came with. Super yummy. $10 as of Sept 2023. - Souvlaki Sandwich Wrap: Souvlaki turned out to be grilled pork, and it was wrapped in pita with some onion, tomato, and tatziki sauce. Super delicious. The pork was tender although it came in chunks. $11 as of Sept 2023. 20% gratuity was automatically added for all dine-ins. Service was good and our waitress was very nice and friendly. Parking was a bit difficult or expensive. Ambiance was pretty nice although the place was a bit cramp. But other than that our experience was pretty great.
google avatar

Debbie R.

Yelp
The saganaki was burned on the bottom, they serve pita chips instead of the nice bread they used to. The gyros we received were crusty! The meat had obviously been on the spit for a very long time. I get we were there early ...5:30 or so, but we paid the same amount of money as someone coming in during the dinner rush time. They don't cook the tomatoes and onions anymore either, and the pita bread, you couldn't open it to put the meat and veges in....at $19 it was not a good meal. Also beware when you get your bill. They automatically added 20%tip! Then when you get the final bill you sign there's a spot for an additional tip! If you don't check carefully someone could easily end up tipping 40%! We've been going to the Fleece for over 35 years, but this will be our last visit. So disappointed.
google avatar

Gary B.

Yelp
Stopped here after a concert downtown. Sort of small and cramped, and obviously it is too late in the year for the sidewalk seating. For as crowded as the location was after the huge concert, they did good. Got the drink out quickly and not that bad of a wait on food, taking into account the rush. The food was good. Staff was polite even though being slammed.

Yelp
Nestled in the heart of GreekTown, Golden Fleece is serving up amazing Greek food that will leave your tastebuds wanting more. While parking can be a tiny bit difficult. I recommend parking at Hollywood Casino or one of the paid parking lots nearby. The restaurant itself is the longest standing restaurant in GreekTown. While Golden Fleece has undergone a fantastic renovation on the interior. This restaurant not only has a restaurant but an upstairs club for 21+ up on the weekends, which a strict dress code is enforced AND they have a cool little cafe next door where you can purchase authentic Greek desserts, cheeses, breads, and much more. I ordered a Greek Salad to start. The salad was so fresh. From the crisp lettuce to the hearty tomatoes and cucumbers that aligned the plate. Not to mention the dressing that was amazing! For dinner, I ordered the Lamb Chops with rice. The chops were cooked PERFECTLY. A nice red center, tender, and oh so buttery. The rice was amazing as well. Not pictured was a glass of white wine and a side of Green Beans. Omg! Get the green beans... delicious! Not only was the atmosphere nice, the food amazing, but the waitstaff was GREAT! At their day and age, it's hard to find great help but I must say this place is doing something right. Big Mike was super knowledgeable, and on top of everything. Amazing job! I definitely recommend checking this place out if you're looking for authentic, GREEK food.

Yelp
This gem blows me away! It didn't try their full menu but their desserts are mind blowing! The exceptional service and attention to detail I received both times I visited were so fantastic! I wish I could've tried everything! The coffee was delicious too!

Yelp
I drive to the restaurant at lease two times a month very good service and food if you love Greek food this is your new favorite place

Yelp
Nothing like dropping into "The Fleece" after Opening Day in downtown Detroit. Despite there being a Red Wings game right afterwards, it was so awesome to see tables open for me and three others to dine-in. Always a great experience to get high quality food at a reasonable cost. The music was thumping a bit (which is fine - it was, of course, a Detroit-holiday), but otherwise, still a great spot to get some good food.

Molly F.

Yelp
Best Greek food we've ever had! The saganaki was amazing - definitely order it!!! Not sure how/why the pita bread was better than other places, but we all agreed it was. The chicken, gyro meat, and even the side of rice with sauce... everything was delicious!!! Such a fun location, great indoor seating and fun patio. Loved it all
google avatar

Yelp
Always great food, service and with renovation even better ambience! Love Balklion next door also! The best spinach pie in Detroit!

Yelp
If you're looking for a great Greek restaurant in downtown Detroit look no further than the Golden Fleece. My colleagues and I dined at this restaurant on a busy Saturday night and received top-notch service by our waiter. He was friendly and professional, and provided excellent recommendations on both food and wine. We ordered an assortment of appetizers - the Greek sausage, spanakopita, different types hummus and, of course, Saganaki - if only to be entertained by the flames and the shouts of "Opa!" Our table went through 6 bottles of a Greek Rosé that was, obviously, delicious. I ordered the moussaka for my entree, which was fantastic and perfectly prepared. My colleagues ordered the lamb - they were impressed and were talking about it the next day. The restaurant is cute, clean with some nice touches to make it feel cozy. It was smaller than we expected and it can get pretty loud at times - but, it was a Saturday night, so that's to be expected. I'll definitely be returning and would give it a positive recommendation.

Yelp
Did a quick lunch here today. The patio was nicely decorated and clean! Our waitress was extremely kind and welcoming. We started with the hummus which was SO delicious. Awesome that it's house made! After hummus my mom got the lamb gyro and I got the chicken. The tzatziki that comes on them is super yummy. I think they're a little pricey for what you get though & no side comes with the them.
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
Loved the food and service. Gyro meat was outstanding. They also have some wine by the glass

Yelp
One of few remaining Greek places to eat in Greek town. Started with sauganki- was good,as was pita bread. Shared Greek salad and gyro combo plate. Large portions. Everything tasted good and plenty of leftovers. Waitress service was good. 20 percent gratuity automatically added to bill.

Yelp
We were in Greektown last weekend for a wedding and we're so glad we found the Golden Fleece! Service was FANTASTIC - our waitress was relatively new, apparently (she told us she'd been hired recently) but you couldn't tell. Her service was friendly, personable, and efficient. No issues - we loved her! But all the staff - from the host to the servers to the bussers - were fantastic. We loved the ambiance - what a great location! Food - excellent! Our family had the saganaki and loukaniko as appetizers and they were the best I've ever had (we're Greeks from Los Angeles). Fantastic pita bread, too! I loved my pork souvlaki, and my husband loved his lamb. The gyros were the only thing we found disappointing - they lacked flavor (as did the tzatziki sauce). But everything else - including the wine - was fantastic.

Jaewoo S.

Yelp
The weather was amazing so we decided to seat outside. 2pm on a sunny Saturday, it was a perfect day and time to get Greek food in Greektown. The gyro sandwich I got was amazing. I never knew the meat could be so juicy. It was not dry at all but moist and juicy. The portion was pretty big. Glad I did not get any sides. $11. Probably post inflation price. But not bad at all. Would dine here again! Server was also nice!

Yelp
Service was fantastic, Liv was so friendly and funny and made the experience more enjoyable! We ordered spinach pie and a few entrees from YiaYia's cookbook section, I can't remember the names as they were in Greek (lol) but they were delicious. We also got the tiramisu because Liv recommended it and it was a good choice to end the meal on. Although a 20% gratuity was automatically added we left more because the experience was fantastic. Overall, loved the ambiance, service and food and would come back here if I were to visit the state again.

Yelp
This was my first visit to the Golden Fleece Restaurant In Greektown. There is another restaurant that I would usually go to but it was not compliant with health requirements, according to Yelp. My friend and I went after attending a Lions game. Outside the restaurant a couple of gentleman assured us that they had been coming there for years and highly recommended it. Okay, excited to try it. Upon entering, the place had a quaint ambiance but seemed a bit cramped with tables. We were escorted to the back of the restaurant. I asked if there were any booths, but was told no. There was an adjacent room that seemed more spacious but they were not seating anyone there. We started off with Saganaki (flaming cheese). Somehow the cheese wasn't very hot although it had been on fire, so I attributed it to the lemon juice used to put out the flame. The cheese had a decent flavor but I was disappointed in the bread, as it was pita that was dry and not even warmed up. I'm accustomed to hot crusty fluffy bread served with Saganaki. I would have been okay with pita if it had been fresh. Both my friend and I ordered Spanakopita (spinach pie), which is my favorite Greek dish. I was surprised to learn that it didn't come with tomato sauced rice or potatoes, but we added them as sides. The Spanakopita portions were generous. I liked that there was a lot of spinach and not just phyllo crust. However there wasn't much feta so it wasn't as flavorful as expected. We were glad we ordered the side dishes because the spinach pies would have been pretty bland without them. Since I love spinach, I ate the spinach out of the phyllo, but I've definitely had better Spanakopita at other Greek restaurants in Detroit and in Chicago. We didn't have drinks beside water and the bill totaled $52 and some change, which included a 20% tip automatically added to the bill. I didn't have a problem with the automatic 20% tip given that our service was satisfactory. It's the food that was disappointing. Perhaps other food offerings are better, but I will try a different restaurant next time I'm in Greektown.

Yelp
We went there on recommendation from an employee of Greektown Casino. Hubby loves lamb shanks and had asked for the best in Greektown. We took my daughter and her husband there on Thursday night. They're visiting from out of state. The place is small but nicely decorated and clean. Service was excellent. I got a Greek mule drink made with Ouso, ginger beer and lime, sprig of mint leaves. Hubby got Greek beer. We shared a great Greek salad, with feta, tomatoes, cucumbers and greek olives. No lettuce. Excellent. Also shared Greek meatball appetizer. Perfect for 4. Lamb shank, Chicken Lemanato, gyro plate and moussaka were our entrees. Desert was in an adjoining room with a big display of scrumptiousness. Baklava cheesecake, custard, a creamy fruit topped custard was the favorite. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
The last time we had been here was 2010. This had always been our go-to place, but it had gotten pretty bad. My brother told me multiple times over the years that it had turned around and to give it another shot. We did, and we were blown away! First, the interior is so fresh and inviting! There were some elements that still made it feel exactly the same, but totally revived! Second, our service was outstanding. Prompt and very friendly! Third, the FOOD! We ordered some saganaki that was cooked perfectly (that was an issue on the last visit)! Our only complaint was that it came with pita and not some fresh bread, but that is only a matter of preference. It was still delicious. We both ordered gyros. We were both given VERY hearty portions. If he had been going right home after, we would have both had leftovers, but we were going out so we couldn't take it with us. We could have easily gotten another meal off each. This made for a really nice night out. Actual Greek options in Greektown are dwindling, it is nice to see this place (the oldest in Greektown) breathing new life!

Yelp
For years an Opening Day tradition and downtown destination for my wife and I. Unfortunately, the appearance has been upgraded, but the food is now disappointing. Gone is the tasty bread (they still serve pita) that went perfectly with the Saganaki. The Loukaniko was burnt and their very tasty red sauce was bland (missing clove and other ingredients). Gone too are the plastic red baskets, which were replaced plates and wood blocks. The server was pleasant, but made several mistakes on our order. Add in some warm Greek beer to the mix. Plus, look out they add a 20% gratuity to the tab and include an additional tip line for confusion. So to sum it up, gone is the great Greek dive with delicious food and enter a cookie cutter Greek restaurant with nothing special to bring us back...

Yelp
Quaint decor, nice wait staff. Greeted and sat quickly. Pretty much everything expect for cocktails came quickly. Apps, dinner, and wine. Started with the saganika and some spreads (hummus, potato, etc.) Not enough pita and they did bring more- for a charge. One of the cocktails was "remade" they brought more to the table when they fixed it- at no cost. I had a lamb shank and it was a huge portion and very filling. I could not finish it. Everyone was asking for a way to take home items since they were large portions. Great spot to stop in when you're in this neck of the woods.

Yelp
But why in THE hell do you automatically add in a gratuity for a single person eating dinner? I don't know what kind of customers you're dealing with, ( but I can guess with 100% accuracy) but I know how to put my own tip in.

Yelp
If you love over priced food and false advertising, Golden Fleece is your restaurant! I ordered a chicken souvlaki with chicken, onion, tomato, and tzatziki sauce for a whopping $16. I received a stale pita with 2 chicken skewers drizzled with some tzatziki sauce. I used to love the Golden Fleece when in Greek Town but if this is the quality of food they offer, I will not be revisiting.

Yelp
Back in the day this was my go to spot for gyros in GT. They have added a nice streetside patio and renovated the interiors, and understandingly increased their prices. I am glad they still have the rotisseries where they slice the meat for your piping hot gyro. I have also tried some of their salads. I tried a nearby spot, but wish I had come back to where it's at.

Yelp
It has been years since I had been here. They have renovated and modernized the dining area, but the food is still amazing! Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Been a customer 45 year's we called the dive of Greektown with the very best food. Today a million dollar restoration and addition of Bakalikon Bakery Bar n Market connected next door. Now the finest most beautiful eating spot on the block. Greek    Brothers Niko and Vasili Dionysopoulos came to America in the late 60's. Then they purchased the Golden Fleece on April 7th 1970. They worked 'till the late 2000's. Their sons Spero and Yanni took over the family business and remodeled the building and concept after 50 years. Been 5 year's since last visit entering was like WOW so unique and relaxing atmosphere. Lunch time about half full one superstar Waiter Scott is over the top 5 star Plus service. Started with a Trio of Greek dips Satzikaki Cucumber yogurt dip. Skordalia Garlic potato spread. Revithosalata Hummus. With hot Pita Bread Wedges for dipping outstanding treat for sharing. We shared the Famous Greek Horiatiki Salad Village style salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, green peppers, olives & feta cheese. She had Double Gyro Sliced off the spit, note one of only 3 places in USA that makes very own Gyro Meat for the Spit you can view the juices dripping at open air kitchen. Served with tomatoes, onions, sauce, pita bread w Fries. Only the very best you'll ever eat Gyro Meat OMG a must try. Me a double Wow Greek Meata Ball's Keftethakia Greek meatballs simmered in our tomato sauce. A mixture of Lamb n Beef that tender moist and melts in yo mouth, a instant Addiction. I smashed a Meatball on a full Pita Bread n topped with Sauces n Onion's for a Mega unique sandwich. Very best Meatballs ever eaten going back soon for these. For Dessert our waiter Scott went next door to Bakalikon heat in oven Famous Greek Dessert Bougatsa (Greek [buatsa]) is a Greek pastry Wonderful. Gotta save room for dessert. I will make a separate review for place next door. #goldenfleecedetroit @goldenfleecedetroit @bakalikon_detroit #greekfood #gyro #bougatsa #keftethakia #horiatikisalad #downriverfriendseat #greektowndetroit

Yelp
Greektown is always a blast, and when you're hungry you can't go wrong at the Golden Fleece. I have been eating there for many years and you just can't go wrong with the gyros there. Platters heaping with lamb or chicken and all the tomatoes, onions and tzatziki to make your sandwich perfect. They renovated recently and it looks amazing. Great staff too. Three of us shared the dip trio and two gyros and we went home with leftovers.
