Golden Fleece opened its doors in 1970, making it the oldest restaurant in Greektown. Renovations in 2020 gave the interior a more modern aesthetic while preserving its charm.
When it comes to appetizers, I expect a Greek restaurant to have saganaki and spreads/dips. Not only does Golden Fleece have both, it offers five spreads to choose from. These can be ordered individually or as a trio, which is discounted. I've also tried the octopus. The menu doesn't specify whether it's served hot or cold, but it's essentially a salad with an ample portion of octopus. All three appetizers are great ways to start a meal.
As for entrées, I've had the chicken lemonato and the "famous combo." The highlight of the chicken lemonato was the lemon wine sauce. The combo includes a gyro and a kebob, and is served with fries or rice. For the meats, you can choose chicken or lamb. The portion size and quality of the meats make the combo the best bang for your buck on the menu.
With the Greek influence in Greektown fading more and more each year, Golden Fleece continues to keep the aura alive. It's a great spot for lunch, dinner, drinks, or a quick bite. Plus, the Greek bake shop and market next door, Bakalikon, is accessible from within the restaurant. You can even order from Bakalikon's menu while dining at Golden Fleece, and vice versa.
