10 of the Best Doughnuts in the East Bay | Eater SF

"Golden Gate Donuts has old school doughnuts galore, from classic glazed to apple fritters. They’ll set you back anywhere from $0.85-$1.65, depending on how fancy they are. A carton of milk, a cup of joe and a half dozen doughnuts is your best bet." - Ellen Fort

Google
Delicious Donut shop. The lady working the counter was very friendly and patient with me. Pretty nice selection and some great coffee too. Check them out if you're in the area.

Google
Not going to lie. This is one of the better breakfast sandwiches in oakland for the price. $7.50 and made to order. So many cafes trying to charge $12-15 for a breakfast sandwich these days.

Google
I love Golden Gate Donuts. They serve the classics, done exceptionally well and served fresh. Family operated, excellent neighborly service. And cheap! Get the Chocolate Buttermilk!

Google
The exterior of this establishment is rather nondescript but once inside I only need to look through the display case at the wide assortment of baked goodies to find inner delight just to be near all this sugary goodness. Roughly translated, I come back again and again for the doughnuts which are fresh and light. I have never been disappointed. An extra bonus — the people behind the counter have been kind and cheerful.

Google
I love this donut shop. I've been going there for awhile now. I try to go every morning to get coffee or tea and a donut. The donuts are fresh and delicious. The owner is very nice. He also sells lots of lottery tickets and his shop is know as a "lucky retailer". It's never too busy and the personal attention to each customer makes the trip worthwhile. I highly recommend this donut shop :)

Steve Clemmons

Google
The donuts are some of the best donuts in the bay area. If particular note are the cake donuts. They have incredible blueberry, chocolate and crumb donut offerings. Pricing is 10 for a half dozen and 19 for a dozen, which places this as more expensive than my other favorite, Dick's donuts. I also enjoyed my breakfast sandwich, but again, the better one was at Lee's, because we did a taste comparison. We tried the sausage, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on a croissant. Lee's had the better croissant and meat, GG had the better egg and had jalapenos as a welcome addition.

Google
Good Donuts great place to chill out and you can play Lottery

Google
Lovely, family-run place with some of the best apple fritters on the planet. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Got a dozen assorted and a dozen holes for about $20. Delicious! The woman that helped me was very kind and bubbly. It had the feel of your hometown donut and coffee shop, something I appreciate. If I'm in the area and need to grab donuts and coffee, I wouldn't hesitate to stop into golden gate donuts
google avatar

Max Y.

Yelp
Service was meh. Very hot inside the place itself. From what I can tell from the outside sign that is basically invisible... to the muggy feeling inside. There was a a lot of different choices for donuts. I had ordered a dozen of different kinds. Chocolate, glazed, maple, sugar and a couple other choices. The donuts themselves were very soft and squishy! If you want a crazy donut with fruit loops or Oreos, this is not that place. If you are in the area and want a quick basic donut, hit this place up. I wouldn't go out of my way to have a donut...

Yelp
Golden Gate Donuts is a nice locally owned business in the Temescal area that offers more than meets the eye. While donuts are the main draw, they also serve sandwiches, smoothies, coffee, fries, and other pastries. The donut selection is solid, mostly your classic options, nothing overly fancy, but everything I have tried has been fresh and tasty. I got their cinnamon crumb glazed donut, cinnamon sugar donut, and donut holes, all of which were solid and freshly baked in the morning. Prices are about average for the Bay Area. There is a decent sized indoor dining area that is kept clean, and the woman at the front counter is always friendly and approachable. It is also a popular spot for people picking up lotto tickets. Service is quick, and while there is mostly street parking, there is a Churchs Chicken lot across the street you might be able to get away with using if you are in and out. They open early, which is great for anyone heading to work in the morning. Overall, a dependable neighborhood spot with a surprisingly wide menu.

Yelp
Dang good donuts. They had blueberry old fashioned! It was delicious. Always solid. Sprinkles cake, apple fritters good as well.

Yelp
Good donuts and ambiance - it looks and feels like a donut shop. Rough area and cash only. Came here around 9am as I walk through the door to the sound of a very harsh buzzer sound - I had already been awake for hours but had somehow managed to wake up all over again. Its was like the sound of some horrible alarm clock of an annoying roommate. The horror. Oh the horror. At the time I walked in there was every kind of donut still available. I hear the tiny sweet voice of a lady behind the counter. It was in sharp contrast to that horrible horrible sound I had endured earlier. like filled ones. Its like a little surprise when you bite in. I carefully study all the round filled ones and can make out all the various fillings. I'm like a donut detective and didn't need any help. Anyway if I did need help don't think I'd get any as I didn't understand half of what that sweet lady was saying. I'm not complaining - I'd rather have sweet and not very helpful than nasty and perfect English. I whip out of my pants a credit card. "Cash only." That I understood perfectly. I told her I didn't have coins and I seemed to instantly have my price negotiated down to the nearest dollar. I sit at the counter with my self serve coffee and donut I put lots of creamer in my coffee as it protects ones enamel. Tooth care is always a top priority and if I can neutralize acidic coffee with some dairy I always will. Besides if I'm consuming something sweet its all the more important. I don't necessarily feel the need to put all my dentist's children through college. As I gaze out the window I notice all the graffiti and rough surrounding areas. Some real tough looking people. Then I take a look a the lotto machines. I remember on the news the Lotto Fever with Powerball and super Lotto both reaching nearly a billion dollars. I see some scratcher tickets in front of me. Cute dog and cat with a little hat. I like that. Probably won't be my go to place although the donut and coffee were both very good and a fair value. I was really aiming to go to Donut Savant but checked and saw they were closed on Tuesday. Thank you Waze app. One day soon I will have to try that snobby donut place.

Yelp
AMAZING glazed donuts!!! The donut holes are definitely not as good though and all their other donuts are good but not as mind-blowing as the glazed donuts! Cash only though they take Venmo and Zelle Friendly service

Simon A.

Yelp
Best donuts in North Oakland. Great crunch on to outside, soft texture on the inside. Glazes have excellent flavor. Over all taste, and mouth feel gets four stars. Service is fast and friendly . Feels like a a 50's coffee shop. Cash only. Any event I bring their donuts too folks love them. Stop by and try it out for yourself.
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
This place has more lotto scratchers than donuts. They had a wide enough donut selection to impress my kiddo. We stopped in to waste some time before our hair appointment. Service was friendly and the donuts were great. Nothing special about the inside except the waterfall of lotto tickets behind the cashier.
google avatar

Becca T.

Yelp
It's your typical doughnut shop.....I would appreciate the doughnuts having an option to be warmed or kept warm. Outside of that it's pretty spacious, ample parking. Located in the "temescal " neighborhood of OAKLAND. My favorite doughnut was the chocolate glaze twist. I tried others and they were okay. Very decent pricing though. Staff was decent.
google avatar

Jonathan L.

Yelp
This is the local spot to grab your donut fix. Both the raised and cake donuts are excellent, both in texture and flavor. The cinnamon twists could use a little more nutmeg but I still rate it well. The Apple fritter is killer here. The prices are pretty good, the staff is really nice, and the community seems to enjoy this place alot. I've been about 5 times and plan to continue. They just started selling egg rolls which are also tasty: crunchy without being too oily so still light. Makes for a nice breakfast.
google avatar

Sherrie S.

Yelp
I love this little mom and pop donut shop in Oakland. The service is great, I call in my order before I pick up. They sell lotto tickets and the atmosphere seems to be local people that knows the cashier. It's definitely my favorite place to buy donuts in Oakland!
google avatar

Joyce S.

Yelp
Great yeasted donut. Only tried a chocolate raised but soft and delicious. Would buy again! Cash only
google avatar

Jenny L.

Yelp
It's allllllll about the donuts here. Great guy behind the counter whenever I've been, and some of the best donuts in town. Check them out!

Milo P.

Yelp
this business is cash-only. They have a good selection of donuts, and the people who work there are some of the kindest people i've ever met. their chocolate muffins are massive and delicious.
google avatar

Morgan Z.

Yelp
Golden Gate Donuts is our favorite local donut shop. They have THE best donuts and THE best croissant sandwiches - yum! The donuts are always fresh and they have a good variety. The croissant sandwiches are always hot and fresh and are perfectly layered with egg, cheese and your choice of ham, turkey, bacon or sausage. We always get ham but have tried the sausage and it was delicious. The owner is super friendly and nice and it's always a pleasure to see him. I would definitely recommend stopping by for donuts, croissant sandwiches, coffee or a lotto ticket! We stop by around 1x per week.

Yelp
WHEN: Thursday @ 7:30pm We were craving glazed donuts at night. We drove by, the place was so dark, it was closed that night. The shop should update their business hours.

Yelp
I like donuts just as much as the next person. As such, anybody who has eaten their share of donuts over the 40 plus years on this earth as myself know that not all donuts are created equal. That being said, Golden Gate Donuts is one of the better donut shops in Oakland. I came here last Saturday with a few friends. We ordered a variety which included old fashion and regular donuts, along with an Apple Fritter, Bear Claw, and chocolate custard bar. The donuts ordered were all collected in a customary pink box which always means "treats" are inside of that box. (Kind of like how all Tiffany rings are in a blue box.) While donuts at many other donut shops are shrinking like Ant-Man in the Quantum Realm. Golden Gate serves their donuts fresh and serves what the industry standard should be for donut size. The service was very friendly. Only downside is Cash Only. I asked the owners what time they have to wake up each morning to make donuts. He said "10pm". So in other words the process begins the night before. Donuts are a labor of love for sure. And Golden Gate is sharing that love here at 4201 Telegraph.

Yelp
Tasty donuts, friendly staff, and scratchers- what more could you ask for?! This place is cash only and I happened to have $8 on me, so we were able to get four donuts and a $1 scratcher with change to spare! The donuts were fresh and consistently tasty. The big chocolate covered twist with cinnamon topping was great and I'd highly recommend that one (the biggest one in my picture). The staff (owners?) were super friendly and helpful. Parking can be a bit difficult because there are no reserved spots, but there's lots of street parking nearby. If you're looking for a good donut shop in Oakland this is a solid choice!
google avatar

Greg T.

Yelp
Dam good apple fritter. I will be back... Albeit though call on one other shop within walking distance. GGD had a better fritter. The other shop had more cinnamon and apple.

Yelp
Oh look; another donut review. Because, my fat ass just can't get enough donuts! Do I need them? Nope! Do I love 'em? HELLS yaaaaasssss! Golden Gate Donuts, you have done me quite well. You may not be located in the best part of town, but them donuts are too good for me to really care. First of all, thank you for being one of the only local donut shops open until 8 pm during the week! Lord knows that I shouldn't be eating donuts at night, let alone at all. BUT... you satisfy my donut cravings, and for that... I wub you! And, you know what else?? Your donuts STILL taste good at 8 o'clock at night! I don't like crusty... especially crusty donuts. But your donuts are mm mm mmmm bay-beh! Gimme the glazed, gimme the custard filled, give the rainbow sprinkles! As a matter of fact... just gimme the whole damn donut shop! I promise that there will be no donut left behind. I would probably inhale every last one and die of a donut overload. But anyways, these donuts are legit you guys! Soft, chewy, and sugary for the Gawd! Even at night they have a nice selection of donuts still left. The owners are really sweet and they seemed eager to help me with my order. The only downside is that they're cash only. Womp womp! But, I wouldn't mind carrying a little cash for these donuts. They're tasty, cheap, and they even have an ATM inside just in case you forget to bring that cashola! If you're looking for a good local donut shop, Golden Gate Donuts is the one.

Yelp
You have to appreciate a place that gives you free donuts. When they are good? Even better! An old-fashioned donut shop with no frills and no extras they rely on their good donuts to stay in business and no wonder they are a staple in the community. FOOD: What you expect from a good donut. Nice solid taste, fresh, good amount of dough to sugar to frosting ratio. They have a good variety even though I went around noon. Huge cinnamon rolls and apple fritters. Everything looked good but I went for my staple chocolate frosted buttermilk. Not the best I've ever had but more than worth it especially considering the price. SERVICE: How can you say anything bad when they give you two free donut holes? And the donut holes were so good! Courteous and nice. Not exceptional but certainly pleasant. And they give you free donut holes! COST: Very reasonable. This is what donuts should cost. In a cost to donut ratio they are way above average.

Teena N.

Yelp
Okay, okay. So I pass this place often and never stopped by. The lady who works here is really nice. Finally got to try their donuts, they are super soft, airy and fluffy. I like to get the donut holes for my son. There's parking at the front and to the side. They sell lottery tickets, etc here. The Folks who stays seem to be the one that plays t he lotto to pass time. Its a good place to get donuts. Cash only.
google avatar

Robert R.

Yelp
I recently ran into place and grabbed some doughnuts after 4pm a weekend afternoon. I was surprised how fresh the doughnuts tasted. Usually if you find a doughnut place open after lunch, chances are they are either old or don't taste as good. I went early on an different occasion and there were so much variety to choose from. I had ordered an Apple fritter and a Coconut chocolate glazed cake. The owner seemed friendly and there seemed to be a local neighborhood vibe feeling to this shop. Both doughnuts were good and will definitely be back to try some more of their doughnut flavors.
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
This is my favorite donut shop ever!!! I go about once a week and I try different types of donuts each time. Omg all their donuts are light and fluffy I highly recommend just going and picking any donut out to try. My favorite would be their cinnamon roll donut thing! I usually don't like cinnamon rolls bc it's always heavy and dense, but this was light and fluffy! This time I got three donuts and they were 10/10! The service is great! The workers are so sweet and attentive!
google avatar

Candell P.

Yelp
If you are buying for a group, NEVER GO THERE!!! These are the worst doughnuts I have ever had! The old fashioned are burned! They have very little glaze. Then, I asked about another type, "Are these jelly-filled?" She said, "Yes. Rasberry." I said, "Oh! Do they have seeds?" She responded, "No! No seeds!" I said, "No seeds? Then, I'll take them both!" When I arrived home, sure enough, there were seeds. We threw them all in the trash. You should know that something is wrong when you pull out your ATM card, and a person yells, "CASH ONLY!!!"
google avatar

Mel S.

Yelp
Service: the owner of this shop is so friendly and nice. Great with recommendations, made me feel welcome, and provided great service. Donuts: for quite a few different donuts and they were all delicious. The ones in particular that I liked were the apple fritter and the maple glaze bar.
google avatar

Jose C.

Yelp
Reviews are spot on. Apple fritter was incredible and didn't break the bank. Crunchy on the outside, soft and fluffy inside, little chunks of apple goodness. Plus there's a little parking lot behind the store
google avatar

Sarah D.

Yelp
Don't miss out on this Oakland gem. Shoutout to Yelp for bringing us here!!! My boyfriend and I are blueberry cake doughnut fanatics and while we drove the miles for the said item...the lemon filled doughnut and raspberry filled doughnut took the cake (no pun intended). We'll be raving about this spot for years!
google avatar

Kathy Z.

Yelp
This donut shop is an absolute gem. I no longer expect a new experience when I eat a classic, like a simple glazed donut or a maple bar. However, the classic donuts here give you a surprising first bite, because they are so incredibly fluffy, soft, and flavorful. My favorite is the blueberry cake donut. I don't know how else to describe it other than it being the best cake donut I've ever had. It tastes extremely fresh and surprisingly soft, and the color of it is vivid. Not only are the donuts amazing, the owners are the NICEST people ever. They are truly members of this community, having been open for over 30 years, and always showing kindness to those who are less fortunate.
google avatar

Annie C.

Yelp
5 stars for the glazed donut! The donut was the perfect size, very light and fluffy, and not too sweet. I wasn't even hungry when I bought it and I finished it wanting more. The donut was $1.05. They have a bunch of other donuts that looked delicious.
google avatar

Megumi N.

Yelp
I love their French cruller so fresh!!! They only take cash so make sure to have cash In your hands!!! Peerless fresh coffee served!!!
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
Solid donut place in Oakland. Serving hot and ready donuts plus your lotto and cigarette needs. One Saturday I ventured to the land of Oaks for some delicious donuty treats for a company picnic. I was promptly greeted and informed; Cash Only for 4.5 Dozen Donuts. I made my selections and hit the teller line for payment. When asking for a receipt, the response was a bit hesitant- but the donuts were delish. Turning to 8AM on a Saturday the crowd was forming and people seemed to love the vibe served up with Golden Gate Donuts. I'll return!

Trisha R.

Yelp
I went to Dream Fluff recently because we moved and someone told me it was incredible. DF was good, but Golden Gate is GREAT. The best donuts, the lady is lovely and the prices are good. I recommend to everyone I know. The only thing that ever stops me from going more regularly is cos I'm trying to lose weight. Else I'd go every other day.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Great local neighborhood haunt in Oakland with fresh donuts, great staff, and to top it all off, super cheap! What more do you need? This place is awesome - they even gave me extra items to sample on my first visit. I'll definitely be back :) One thing to note is they are cash only so bring cash!
google avatar

Elaysha J.

Yelp
The ladies that work here are so nice and I can tell that they know all the regulars. Usually I ask them to choose my assortment of a bakers dozen and they almost always give me a couple free :) They have a great classic selection and perfect recipe - these donuts aren't greasy, they're super light with larger center holes than your average. I Iike to treat my office every now and again to fresh donuts - it took me awhile to find a great place nearby after Donut Dolly closed, but I am so happy to have found Golden Gate, it's small, local and minority owned. So i'm committed.
google avatar

Yung Y.

Yelp
Every donut is fresh. And I pick up on time at 7:15 am. They are already been packed. My coworker love them. Thanks Golden Gate Donuts.
google avatar

Meliza M.

Yelp
Golden Gate Donuts has the best donuts in town! The first time I bought a dozen from here I almost ate 3 in one sitting! The donuts are nice and soft in the center and the bottom had a nice crunchiness to it. I love this place because it gives me an old donut shop feel and there's always locals coming in to get their usual coffee and scratchers. They have a ton of scratchers and winning scratchers posted on their walls. This place is also Cash only! There's an ATM inside, but it's a bit slow if you have Bank of America for some reason
google avatar

Blaire F.

Yelp
Unsafe environment. The owner got very aggressive with me. The place was also not clean.
google avatar

Kimberly N.

Yelp
The owner is always so nice! And donuts are YUMMY :) Cash-only, but so worth the monthly trip to an ATM for our donut allowance ;)
google avatar

Andrew C.

Yelp
Got another apple fritter (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/golden-gate-donuts-oakland?select=lX1t_W4i4A_c8j5srO9Qcw) and happy to say the off flavor from my previous couple of visits is gone! Though maybe my arteries won't agree since now I can scarf down the whole thing . . . Will bump things up again, if things stay consistent.
google avatar

Jamie L.

Yelp
Monster sized cinnamon rolls, bear claws, twists, etc. Pricing is based on size. Biggest is $2.25/each. My son said the cinnamon roll was great and couldn't help scarfing it down in the car. Cash only.
google avatar

Rod M.

Yelp
Stopped into this spot because of the high rating and glowing reviews. It looked like your standard donut place so I was a bit confused. I ended up getting their butterfly cinnamon roll ( $1.85) which was solid but by no means amazing. The lady at the counter was very friendly and I can see why people like this place but for me it was just a simple no frills 2 or 3 Star venue .

Jenny G.

Yelp
The donuts are not too sweet but fluffy and doughy. But what I love about this place is the service. The worker knew me and my friend were on a tight budget and offered to help but we declined the offer. However on top of what we bought, the worker gave us free donuts as service even though we didn't ask. Would recommend and come again. Prices are cheap tooo!!!

Anonymous P.

Yelp
My go to place for donuts in Oakland! I'm never disappointed in the freshness of their glazed donuts!
google avatar

Kev C.

Yelp
Ordered an Old Fashioned Glazed and an Apple Fritter. So damn good but it isn't the best I've had. If you're looking for some solid neighborhood donuts in Oakland that remind you of the kind your grandpa used to take you to when growing up, try this place out.
google avatar

Scott P.

Yelp
Yikes! This place was trash. After reading how a recent reviewer was battling with a colleague over best apple fritter in town, I came in with high expectations. What I left with, was a low dopamine count. I ordered the Maple Crueller and Apple Fritter. Both were junk. The Maple Cruller tasted like plastic and fish sauce. No joke. The Apple Fritter looked fantastic, and the texture was sound. A solid crunchy shell is a requirement of any apple fritter worthy of discussion... yet it was completely flavorless beyond the first hit on my taste buds. Apple(y) taste for a milisecond... then... pure nothingness, and I felt like I was just chewing rainbow bread, or something. Will I be returning? Absolutely not. If I'm going to blow out my macros with what should be the most succulent of sweets, the shit better taste good. Unfortunately, the shit tasted like shit.
google avatar

Adrian V.

Yelp
I've been meaning to come here for a while but I've never had cash on me. However I had some on me today and I was not disappointed. Their donuts are all light, fluffy, full of flavor, and delicious. Should be everyone's go to donut shop.
google avatar

H. P.

Yelp
We're having a friendly turf war at work over apple fritters. I brought in a box from Golden Gate Donuts. Someone else brought in some from a place in San Francisco, and someone else brought in some from a different SF spot. I ain't sayin' where the others were from, but among the people in my office, Golden Gate Donuts is way above the rest. As it should be. These things are crunchy on the outsides and pillowy on the insides, like funnel cakes with big ribbons of apple. Not too cakey; they're proper doughnuts. Also, they're bigger than my entire /face/. And they are not the reason why you should go to Golden Gate Donuts. The reason you should go to Golden Gate Donuts is the awesome couple who owns the place. They're kind, friendly, and generous. When I buy a box of donuts, they inevitably throw in an extra or two "just to make the box more full." I've seen them give free coffee to patrons who didn't have enough money for a cup, "because it's just not right to start the day without coffee." These are people who look out for their neighbors and their patrons, and /they/ are why you should go to Golden Gate. Enjoy the apple fritters while you're there.

Yelp
This place is awesome. I came here to grab last-minute donuts for my team. It was cash only (thankfully, I had just enough!), BUT then they gave me a couple of extra items (1 to sample), which was awesome. Cynics might say it was a obvious grab for a good tip or return patronage, but that's exactly what I did!! I think the owners are genuinely good people, and YES, I'd definitely return. Food: 5 Service: 5
