"A classic Chinese bakery on the border of Chinatown and the Lower East Side, Kamboat offers a variety of baked goods in addition to coffee, rice rolls, and various other dishes. But we mainly come here for some of the best egg tarts in the city. The crust is a little more crumbly than flaky, and the egg custard center is impossibly smooth. We like to buy these egg tarts by the dozen, save a few for ourselves, and bring the rest to potlucks to share with friends." - izzy chen, team infatuation

"“Kamboat Bakery & Cafe serves the best egg tarts and Portuguese-style egg tarts. They also have a back kitchen that definitely caters more to the Chinatown locals. They serve up all sorts of stir-fried noodles and congees that are very grab-and-go friendly.”" - anna rahmanan

Fantastic bakery!!! To start off, fresh fresh fresh. I love fresh. I also LOVE Red bean buns. They had a good selection and their egg tarts were delicious. Flaky crust. Dairy free!!! My friend had the cheese cake and angel cake. He said they were delicious as well. Bought some for my mom and can’t wait to see her reaction. Our family loves sweet tasty bread. Thank you for the service and delicious pastry. Will be my stop everytime I’m nearby.

I really enjoyed eating at this store when it was cold outside. They have great warm meals and drinks. I got a delicious lemon tea and one of their Mexican breads. I was shocked by how soft and fluffy it was. It was sweet and everything I needed to go with my cup of tea. I will be buying more for home! My family loves this place.

Google
This bakery is always reliable and comforting start to my day. They have such a large selection of buns and other savory options such as stir fried noodles and fried rice. There’s always the standard teas and coffee options but also happy to have red bean ice drink and other blended drinks for a refreshing pick me up. It’s hard to choose, so best to get a little of everything. I love how fresh they are throughout the day even days when you catch them right before closing.

You are already in Chinatown. Treat yourself to a sweet and some Almond tea. You deserve it. The staff is kind. The place is lively. And the treats are delicious. Separate yourself from $4 and find happiness. I would share a picture. But my coconut bun is already gone.

Tried the mango mochi and sesame ball and it is the most scrumptious, nice in texture, was still warm around 10am and the most affordable delectable snack ever.

Google
Golden Manna Bakery is an absolute gem! Their egg tarts are hands down some of the best I’ve ever had—perfectly flaky crust with a rich, creamy filling. The swirl cake is also a favorite, so soft and flavorful, just the right amount of sweetness. Beyond the amazing pastries, their service is always warm and friendly, making every visit a pleasure. Whether you’re stopping by for a treat or grabbing something to go, Golden Manna never disappoints!

Delicious mooncakes - perfect for mid autumn festival! The woman was very helpful describing the different flavors.

If you're staying anywhere near here, this is the place to get your coffee. Last year's trip to NYC, we made the mistake of going to Cafe Grumpy every morning for coffee, so this time I got our coffee every seven days of our visit at Golden Manna Bakery. Great basic coffee, and fast service. We were told the local workers in China Town go here. Thank you Hotel Mimosa for the recommendation!

Yelp
swung by this morning for a large coffee milk tea, ham bun with melted cheese on top, golden bun and a savory dumpling. everything was tasteless, and extremely greasy. coffee was also flavorless. very disappointing

Yelp
Golden Manna Bakery is an institution in Chinatown. There is a lot of talk about their Egg Custard. My neighbor swears by it so I thought we try it ourselves. I ordered two and some other pastries, including whipped buttermilk cream bum with coconut flakes. Most of the time, when you buy an egg custard, It dries up while it sitting on your countertop. Theirs does not. It was still nice and, not hard, and dried up around the rims. The picture here shows you how long it has been on the counter for like 2 hours. Still moist. The price is good and still 75 Cents

Yelp
An old school Chinese bakery in the heart of Chinatown. My mom is an avid fan of their mochis. They're usually filled with either peanuts or mango pieces. Both are equally good but I personally like the mango more. However, make sure you get the mango Mochi only if mangos are in season! I'm waiting to try their chestnut roll cake the next time I'm there again. They don't have a lot of bread options, so I wish they filled out their display cases and shelves with more pastries, but I also understand that it's dependent on foot traffic. Though I did see some locals chilling at the few tables when I stopped by on a Monday.

Yelp
Super delicious egg tart! It was large and had a great crust--super flaky (if it's messy to eat, you know it's good), and the custard was just the right level of sweetness and had a great texture. Would definitely come here again!

david l.

Yelp
IMO one of the best if not the best Dan TaTs in NYC Chinatown. The crust is very flaky and perfect. The custard perfect blend of flavors and smooth. The other pastry are all good as well as the coffee

Zuri Y.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick morning pick me up. Ordered an egg tart and iced milk tea. The egg tart was flaky, but was a little sad that it was on the cold side. The iced milk tea was pretty standard, although on the sweeter side. tldr; pretty standard Chinese bakery, cash only

Yelp
Great place for fresh bao and lemon/milk tea. Their bao is wrapped in protective sealed practice and they are in enclosed containers instead of out in the open which I like just in case flies get inside. They are also usually well stocked and don't run out of bao and if they do they usually have another batch being made. They now have a machine that puts a seal over your drinks which is so helpful if you're getting one on the go rather than sitting down inside. It is air conditioned but quite dirty inside. However, there is a lot of seating so you don't have to worry about grabbing a chair. The menu on the wall is in large print and shows all the prices both in Chinese and English. One of my go to bakeries in Chinatown.

Kimberly J.

Yelp
Egg Tarts are $1 each. A bit pricier than some of the other Chinese bakeries around. Their tarts are also better tasting. Fresh, light, flaky and buttery crust. The custard was a bit bland and watery. The eggy flavor isn't as noticeable but it's light, smooth and slightly sweet. They have a nice selection of baked goods. Seating is available, the bakery is quite spacious. It can get packed and disorganized at times. Most baked goods are within reach. If you're interested in a mini or regular sized cake, do your best to get someones attention. On busy days, there really isn't an organized line. Everyone stands around the cashiers and does their best to get noticed. Though their Egg Tarts are a bit pricey, their other baked goods are reasonably priced.

Yelp
A newly opened bakery that brings another addition to the Manna House Bakery (MHB) franchise in Chinatown. While the selection is not as good as MHB on Catherine Street, all of the distinct qualities (style, taste, texture) for "Manna-style" buns are there. A grand opening discount of 20% off baked goods is also now in full effect. Not sure how long that would last. Without the discount, a typical bun (pineapple, cocktail, roast pork) goes for 85-90 cents. It is quite surreal to see that baked goods in Chinatown bakeries are closing in on a dollar apiece. This is by far the largest space for an MHB I have seen. Beyond the counter where hoards of customers are going yelling out orders for buns and cakes, a seating area with a handful of tables is available in the back. The seating area space is definitely not fully utilized, and it can easily accomodate a few more tables. I do missed the dried pork and ham rolls that the previous bakery offered, but if there were to replace it with any other chain, such as a Golden Carriage or Tai Pan, a MHB is easily the preferred choice (in my humble opinion of course). 3,5 Stars

Yelp
A franchise chain with multiple Chinatown Manhattan locations. Golden Manna Bakery carries all the staples of traditional Cantonese baked goodies. After a immediate disappoint departure from nearby Audrey Bakery, my party of two came here. Yes, they carry my childhood favorite-- egg custard tart 蛋 撻 (daan6 taat3/1). My egg custard tart instantly fallen apart as I bite into it. It did not withstand when holding up to my bite. I requested one small hot Green tea without milk but only sugar. My family member ordered one pineapple bun and one small coffee without milk but only sugar, as like most Asians, she is lactose intolerance. Two pastries, two drinks totals a reasonable $3.90. The server attributed at least four packets of sugar as my hot Green Tea was immeasurably too sweet, which I dislike!! Service is average and fluent in Cantonese. Seating is insufficient to fulfill this heavy populated customer traffic. Noise volume level is extremely loud, amid no background music, but the constant chatter in rapid-fire Chinese and gossip from elderly is extremely deafening loud as a restaurant level. However, this is just a simple bakery and the noise volume from patrons' chatter is tone deafening loud on a Friday afternoon!!

Yelp
OMG delicious !!! Ordered some Fresh and Hot Roast Pork Buns. Had some Ham and Egg on the Bun ! Even Better than the Roast Pork. Sweet Tasting Buns. Even ordered some Red Bean Sesame Balls to go !!! Definitely Recommend this Authentic Chinese Bakery

Ruby K.

Yelp
this review is for their egg tarts flaky outside, creamy and sweet egg custard on the inside. paid a little over a dollar for one of these bad boys. can't go wrong. their iced teas/coffees w milk look rather popular here. will be back to try other things! the pastries didn't seem self serve like how it is at fayda/taipan

Jamie Y.

Yelp
I heard this was the best egg tart place in Chinatown so a friend and I decided to stop in after dim sum. Place was clean and full of old Asian people so you know their bakery is very authentic to the traditional egg tart. The egg tarts were $1.25 so a little on the pricey side but so worth it. The egg was the perfect level of sweet and the crispy crust balanced it very well. YUM!

Jamie N.

Yelp
One of my most favorite bakeries in Chinatown. All their buns are delicious. I always get the sponge cakes, egg tarts, ham&egg and hotdog buns. Packaging of the bread is nice - has the nutrition and ingredient facts on it. Interior is clean and everything looks hygienic - whereas their counterparts in Chinatown lack.

Andrew N.

Yelp
It's a Chinese bakery. What do you expect? Me, it better be full of old people. That's basically the stamp of authenticity when it comes to Chinese places. It means they're affordable, as they turn up probably 6/7 days of the week, and also good enough to frequent constantly. If you're not used to what Chinese bakeries have to offer, skip straight to their egg custard tarts. Most people think that they need to be burnt a very flaky, but if categorically speaking, that would be referred to as a "Portuguese Egg Tart" in Chinese. An egg custard tart should be smooth, consistent and a fair color, but not overcooked (look burnt). And for $1.25 apiece? What else could you ask for?

Steve R.

Yelp
Stopped in with my wife and tried our first Boba Tea. Place was very clean and staff was friendly. The cases were filled with amazing looking treats and breads. I'll be back to try some on and empty stomach next time!

Yelp
Dan tat "Egg Custard Tart" Review ONLY - Of Bread Talk, Tai Pan and Golden Manna, I think this comes in #3. Not because it was bad, it just was not better than the others. I guess that puts it at the A-ok but would that stop me from coming again? Definitely not. If I was in the area and had cravings, I'd most likely step inside but, there's no need to go out of your way for this place. Upon arrival, we were told that the dan tats were just out of the oven so we were excited to bite into the good eats. We told the lady we wanted ONE dan tat and she laughed at us. For $1 we got ourselves a very tasty tart... Crunchy outside, soft hot custard middle. Of the dan tats I've had, this center is definitely more on the solid side which can be good or bad depending on your preference. The sweetness level is great and the place left me wanting to try more of their baked goods. There's lots of seating so we noticed that lots of locals were hanging out drinking coffee, eating pastries and reading the weekend paper. One of the locals was commenting in Chinese about how those young kids take pictures for no reason... Scowl. It's ok, I don't mind being the weird one!

S G.

Yelp
I always looking for those sponge cake slice things. A lot of chinese bakeries do them but they taste like nothing. Got the coffee one it was really good. Will be back to try some other things! (I think Manna 2 on Forsyth and ? is the same people - fyi. Anyway yay for finding more great chinese bakeries :)

Judy C.

Yelp
Absolutely the best egg tarts in Chinatown, especially when they're right out of the oven. Pair it with a milk tea and all is good in the world!

Ben L.

Yelp
Best egg tarts in the world. Haven't had one that can top the ones from here, though there are some that come close. Pineapple buns are good too.

Crystine W.

Yelp
I was hastily run-walking to a hair appointment I was very late for and my tummy was throwing a hissy fit. In search of a quickie bakery that was en route, I popped into Golden Manna, paid $1 for a red bean pineapple topping bun and was back to run-walking to the hair appointment. I was really surprised at the quality of their bao (the red bean pineapple topping bun I purchased) because it was so good! The amount of red bean filling was just perfect so that it worked with the pineapple topping paste and did not overwhelm any flavors. Really good compliment - thanks to the employee behind the counter who recommended it. $1 is a smidgen more expensive than the other bakeries in NYC, but the difference in quality is VERY noticeable. I'll definitely be back again to try some of their other stuff! Tip: Don't try to eat this when you are run-walking somewhere. It is very messy.

James L.

Yelp
Needed a place to camp out cuz of the ridiculous rain that came pummeling down yesterday. But just under $5 for 3 hot drinks and 2 little desserts. Need I say more?

Tillie K.

Yelp
ehhh it's kinda pricey for their location. No where near a train station. i was just by passing this bakery. it does have a "A" grading in the front door so I decided to go in. It was pretty packed when I went inside. Didn't get a chance to taste their food. This review is for their take out drinks. it was only 3 coffee and 2 honey ginger and it took a good 10 minutes just to get out of the bakery with my order. Staff are kind of slow..

B N.

Yelp
The food in this place is really affordable, very delicious. Products range from hot and cold teas and drinks to tarts and sponge cakes to buns and breads of many styles and flavours to smaller treats and cookies. They even have a menu near the cashier which translates from Chinese to English. As a person from Hong Kong, I can say that this bakery is filled with authentic Hong Kong baked goods. There is even a seating area!

Tiaa N.

Yelp
THE BEST EGG TART EVER $1.25, when we came they ran out BUT was making more so we got it when it was freshly made. One of the biggest egg tarts too! so worth for the $1.25. The workers here don't really speak much english but are very nice as well will definitely come back soon!!

Al V.

Yelp
Got a birthday cake for my dad here. It tasted pretty good, was satisfied with it. Cost about ? 70-80 bucks and was big enough for 40 people with a lot left

Neil B.

Yelp
Do you always get what you pay for? I think not. The Golden Manna Bakery charges more than the bakeries I usually go to in Chinatown and their baked goods are no better tasting. Also their coffee tasted bitter. One nice thing, however, is that they have more tables than some of the other bakeries in the neighborhood. The people working there were efficient but not particularly friendly. On the other hand the bakery was clean and well lit. So A-OK but nothing special

Pauline L.

Yelp
What's best about Manna House compared to other Chinese bakeries in the city is that each bun is already individually wrapped and the workers get it for you. Other bakeries are out in the open for anyone to grab i.e. less sanitary. You can bet that Manna House is the most sanitary. As for the actual taste, I had my go-to Chinese bun of the sweet topping bun with custard. it was good but a bit soft for my preference. I like the dough to be a bit denser. The service was friendly and though there are tables and chairs, they were all full.

Brian R.

Yelp
After some noodle soup I was craving something sweet, so we walked around the corner and found Golden Manna Bakery. The selection seemed a bit smaller then some of the other bakeries in the area, but everything looked good. We ordered some baked sweet buns filled with egg custard. The bun was sweet and flaky and the custard had just the right texture. This was exactly what I was looking for.

Sally W.

Yelp
Good thing about this location on Bowery Street is that there are tables and chairs so you can hang out. You can sit there with your purchases as long as you want. Spacious enough to not feel cramped. Nothing special in here typical Chinese bakery. Same buns and cakes as anywhere else. I come here because it's very close to me.

David L.

Yelp
So bad. Left the shrimp shell in the ha gao (a dim sum). How am i supposed to eat that? Also i saw their dan tat was broken in the middle of the egg yolk, not a good look.

Tom W.

Yelp
I bought a cha xiu bread. I got stomachache and the meat might be bad. They are not clean.

Alex N.

Yelp
Got their green milk tea and lychee green tea. Both very awful. The lychee green tea just tasted like a can of lychee over ice. Very syrupy.

Angeline C.

Yelp
I got the $8 red card that you get when you go to weddings. I came here to redeem it and I was pleasantly surprised! I went towards the end of the day when they were closing and were trying to get rid of stuff. The lady behind the counter was trying to be helpful and I appreciated that. I was really skeptical of the egg tarts since I am picky about them, but they were really good! Their custard bun was really good too. I went to Tai Pan earlier and I couldn't find them there. I also tried their hot dog bun with the whole hot dog and the one with the four cut up pieces on the corners and they were good too. Each bun and the the egg tarts were $1 each. I was able to get 8 items. I was a very satisfied customer since I wasn't sure what to expect when I went in. I will be coming back if I am in the area!

Betty C.

Yelp
Great egg tarts. Best we've had was in SF and this comes close. Flaky crust and soft custard filling. My godmother gets her daily coffee from them. I had the iced lemon tea. Size on the small side but it was the right balance of sweet/tart.

Liza D.

Yelp
A solid five star. Everything I've tried so far are delicious: hot food items (noodles, congee), egg and spam/ham sandwiches, traditional chinese bakeries (Mexican, pineapple with custard, sponge cake, egg tarts, you name it). On a special note, they have the biggest egg tarts I've ever seen! They are of the size of my palm (well, minus the fingers), with deep and generous amount of delicious filling. I thought I have seen it all, until Manna mama rocks my world. Woof!

Justin K.

Yelp
Love this place. Gae mae baos, char siu baos and don tots are ridiculous. The one on Catherine St. is our favorite but they stopped making the style of gae mae baos that we like, the buttery style with less coconut. You can still get them at the one on the Bowery but they put all the buns in annoying plastic sleeves. Still delicious, though!

Lizz K.

Yelp
If you dig egg custard tarts (dan tat) then you should give the ones here a try as they're delicate in taste and texture. The flaky crust is buttery enough to hold itself together and the light custard within. I appreciated that the custard itself was not very 'eggy' or as dense as others I've tried. The boy didn't enjoy them as much since he prefers the custard to have more of a bite and structure. But what does he know? I'm the Yelper in this relationship.

Sue W.

Yelp
buns are a-ok. i used to come here everytime for fresh pineapple buns but lately it's been a bit of a disappointment. prices are getting high but once in awhile i'll stop by for a bun when i'm on the go. but nothing too fancy about the buns/drinks.

B N.

Yelp
Clean with friendly staff. Cakes were delicious and fresh. I had a pastry filled with lemon cream. It was awesome. Wish we had something like this in St. Louis.

Monica Q.

Yelp
I needed a dessert for a get together and couldn't find a bakery to satisfy this need. I went to Confucius Florist to buy some flowers, asked them, and they pointed to this bakery that was across the street on Bowery. As I was walking across the street I stopped in my tracks because the scent of sweet baked goods hit me when I was still many feet away from the front door. I smiled. Although there was a language barrier, we figured it out, and I ordered a cake. At the get together, everyone liked how fluffy it was and how fresh the fruit was. And I paid maybe $15 - cheap! If I lived near I would go here often for small pastries/buns or coffee.
