The 33 Best Restaurants in Kansas City | Eater

"Lean into the city’s cow town reputation at this faithfully restored 1949 steakhouse in the historic Stockyards District. The Golden Ox claims to be the birthplace of the Kansas City strip, but the menu’s packed with other midcentury steakhouse classics too, including oysters Rockefeller, plate-busting porterhouses, and creamy cocktails such as the Pink Squirrel. If dessert drinks aren’t your speed, grab a nightcap at the adjoining Stockyards Brewery to revel in the Western aesthetic a little longer. Must-try dish: The Ox is one of the best places to try Kansas City Steak Soup, another iconic local dish." - Liz Cook

KANSAS CITY CITY GUIDE

"The Golden Ox opened for business on the first floor of the Kansas City Live Stock Exchange building in May of 1949, catering to ranchers and farmers who brought their cattle to the stockyards. It remained a Kansas City destination until it closed in December of 2014. Now, under new ownership, the Golden Ox has undergone a massive renovation that has preserved much of the building’s historic integrity."

Did not disappoint! The steak was melt in your mouth. We ordered an appetizer, salads 2 sides and steaks. Our server was so kind he offered to take a photo of us for our anniversary below the Golden Ox sign. The history was super neat to look at such a beautiful building.

I had the KC strip Steak with the mushrooms and onions (fantastic ) were fantastic. The steak was not cheap but had a great deal of fat. She had the ribeye and side of carrots (heirloom with fennel and pine nut) which was tasty. Old fashioned (fantastic) were so much better than the Manhattan (tasted like cough syrup). I'll skip the potatoes and just have the sides with bread next time. Creme brulee was good (not fabulous) had a caramelized sugar top which added texture. Service was adequate, water glass was empty x2 but the waitress was present, helpful, but not hovering and she replaced the Manhattan with an old-fashioned without much prompting. The bar next door (stockyard brewery) had great pics of the old stockyard and a great bar space but was too loud. (DJ). Overall, for the $$$ I expected better steak but was impressed with the sides and the old-fashioned with a comfortable atmosphere. I'd go back but not soon.

I was in Kansas City for a work trip and had to get a steak while I was here. This place gave that appearance of a great steakhouse. The vibe this place has is so cool and it has a historic significance about it with the old stockyards. I had the Porterhouse and the Yukon Gold mashed potatoes and I genuinely think this was the best steak and mashed potatoes I have ever had in my life. The steak was cooked perfectly and had an amazing flavor. The potatoes were unbelievably smooth. The wagyu steak tartare was also very good. If I am ever back in Kansas City I will most certainly come back here and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good steak.

The food was as amazing as I remember! It's been about 15 years since I have visited. Dawn, our server, was excellent and had the best service that can be expected from establishment such as Thr Golden Ox. We were in a room off to the side next to a rather large group of five patrons who were a little on the loud side for the small size of the room. But it was a really enjoyable evening.

Recently, my friends, my wife and I had an awesome meal at the Golden Ox in Kansas City! Initially, I had reservations for six people, but ultimately needed seven. The staff was so helpful allowing me to make that change, that we ended up at "The Chef's Table" (a great experience). The food was excellent, the atmosphere was spectacular and our waiter, Joel, was funny and extremely good at his job- making suggestions and offering great service! I would whole heartedly recommend the Golden Ox! Outstanding!

Google
My friend took me here for my birthday. We heard great things about this place. Our experience was completely different. The only thing we ordered that was right was the stuffed mushrooms they were delicious. Im not sure if it was the waiter not paying attention to our order or what. Wrong salad, wrong steaks, not cooked right, to the bill not adding up. Total disaster. I felt sorry for my friend, what was supposed to be a awesome experience wasn't.

Google
Visiting KC, Golden Ox came up more than once, for better or worse. Guess we had to try the Kansas City Cut. An old school steakhouse with great ambience and service. No issues with either. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the hype or maybe did, looking at some of the reviews. Smoked Wings - Good smoke flavor. Not crispy at all. Fat not rendered enough and drums were chewy. Kansas City Cut (Bone in NY strip) - decent, not great and not worth the price tag. Sides: loaded baked potato - had house made thick cut bacon in it, just not enough. Just a baked potato. Creamed spinach - pretty good, spinach, cream and cheese. Glad we went but would not go again.

Google
Overpriced for sure— but it was our daughter’s birthday and her choice to try. Food mostly good but one steak was overcooked and we were not going to wait for a new one. Everything — soup, sauces, salads, etc is an add on charge— be aware and ask. Waiter was nice but terrible with checking back. I finally gave up waiting and asked the hosts twice for the items we needed and the check.

Yelp
I was in town for work and wanted a good steakhouse and they did not disappoint! Great atmosphere and great food!

Yelp
The atmosphere of this place is so cool. I loved looking at all the old pictures on the walls from KC. My grandpa used to go here when he was younger so I was excited to try it for my bday. I started with a glass of Cab which was standard. To eat I did the ribeye with a loaded baked potato. The steak was cooked exactly how I wanted it and very flavorful. But the real star of the show was the baked potato. You would think something so simple wouldn't make this much of an impact but it literally was the best baked potato i've ever had. Soooo good. For dessert we did the tiramisu and that was a miss. Our waitress was good, maybe came around a little too often but no other complaints. I was a little disappointed as I had read other reviews that they did a special thing for birthdays but they did not for me. Sad!

Yelp
My pop has always said this was the place that he had the best steak of his life. We moved to Kansas City on Easter Sunday of 2023. We got to the Golden Ox as quickly as we could. It's down by Kemper Arena or whatever it's called now. The atmosphere here is amazing. We sat at the bar overlooking the kitchen, which was super cool, and something we've only done once before at Michelin star restaurant in Las Vegas. I had the gazpacho which was a special during summer. It rocked! My wife had the wedge salad which she liked a lot. She also had a fillet Oscar, but it didn't have asparagus, and was kind of weird in her opinion. The special that night was smoked prime rib, so, instead of having the sirloin, I intended, I had the special, and it was incredible! I was trying to do a low-carb thing so I had the ratatouille, which was also a special that night instead of any kind of potato. It was a very nice dinner for me. My wife didn't quite enjoy it as much, but she has given the greenlight for us to return. I want to try the sirloin and see if it is as good as I hope it is.

Nancy S.

Yelp
We were a large crowd (10) and came right as they opened. Wait staff very attentive and explained menu items. We split one order (prime rib) but ordered our own salads and sides. Tried a tasting of a Kansas City red wine. Loved ambience and the old historic building and menus. Excellent choice for dinner!

Yelp
The interior was dark and club-like and was fitting for a place founded in 1949. The music was too load to have a conversation without speaking loudly to compete with the music. Somewhat lower on the volume would be better for conversations. Parking was easy in the lot behind the building. Our server, Will, was fantastic, the best part of the evening. He was attentive, funny, knowledgeable and was able to describe all the options and answer questions about food and drinks. The food was okay, and not up to par for the prices. I tried the Manhattan, an Akaushi New York Strip for $56 dollars and was disappointed at how tough and gristly it was. Ordered Char Rare and it came with zero char. (Also known as Pittsburgh, and black and blue.) Disappointing to have it arrive without it at a steakhouse when I can make it at home. One of our companions ordered a dry aged steak and was disappointed at the flavor and lack of tenderness. No one in the group was pleased with the quality based on price. I would not return here for steak.

Dallas V.

Yelp
Absolutely love the look of the place. Staff was extremely nice very thorough and knowledgeable on the menu. I cannot remember our servers name, but he had just heard his hand. He was awesome, Can't wait to be back in Kansas City and try some other items on the menu.

Yelp
Great steaks, cocktails and overall service at Golden Ox! We will visit again in the future for sure

Yelp
I was kinda nervous about coming here because of all the reviews on Yelp. But I took it with a grain of salt and made rsvp anyways. My fiancé and I came here for dinner on a Tuesday night. The ambiance was really nice, I love the dim lights - made it feel super romantic and "vibey." Our service was superb. The waitress we had (forgot her name) was so kind and attentive. Everything came out in order and at a good pace. We ordered quite a bit for the two of us- I literally wanted to try everything. We had -- * Wagyu Steak Tartare: 5/5, super flavorful comes with house chip (perfect pair honestly, the chip was so crispy & fried to perfection) * Half dozen of Oysters: 4/5, was a bit smaller than I've anticipated but all around I did enjoy it! * Crab Cakes: 5/5, probably my fav dish of the night!! Literally every bite was a bit of joy. Love love the crab cake!! * Sake Miso Glazed Salmon: 5/5, the salmon was cooked perfectly (not over cooked and chewy) the flavor was interesting, there was ginger sauce on the side with this dish as well as black rice-- paired it nicely! * The Golden Ox cut: 5/5, the way that this melted in my mouth should be enough to tell you this place lives up to their name! * Lobster Mac n Cheese: 4:5, wish it was a little bit more cheese but the fact that they use rigatoni noodles for this was surprisingly good! * Pistachio Cheesecake: 10/1000000, YOU HAVE TO GET THIS! I was already full but really opted in for this because it's made in house and omg!! The way this dessert took my breath away ~_~ All in all, our experience here was phenomenal.

Yelp
This is the rare example of a fine dining place that actually exceeds the hype. The history is amazing, the ambiance is A+++, and the steak - well it's the best I've had in Kansas City. You oh for the experience but it's worth it. The steak I had was perfect (ribeye). Good cocktails. Enjoyed their spin on the espresso martini that has brandy instead of vodka. The goat cheese and squash risotto was fantastic. Next time I feel like dropping money, I'll be back. Of course, you can always just get a burger. The open kitchen is an especially awesome dining experience.

Yelp
First off, this is such a romantically lit place. The entire interior is intimate & welcoming. It's candle lit & the menus are beautiful. We ordered incredibly delicious drinks & had waygu for the first time. It was a life changer - everything paired so incredibly well. While waiting for our meal the bread & butter was brought out & it was delicious. We tried all of the sides we wanted too & none of it went to waste - we ended up finishing off his & my proteins there & bringing all sides home to finish our meals. INCREDIBLE service & we were suggested a very classy place to enjoy drinks across the road. Our server was attentive, quick & we WILL be returning. Prices are a little high, but you pay for what you receive 100%.

Yelp
I'll happily pay $$$ for an amazing dinner and great service. Sadly, this was not it! Our waiter was overrun and frantic most of the time we were there. We were celebrating a birthday, no small talk, no "what brings you in". Our reservations were at 8, we waited in the bar next door until 8:20. The steak, which was pricey was tough, too much fat marbled thru, the sides were all luke warm. Water glasses were empty most of the time. Waiter didn't come back to check when food was delivered to see if we needed anything g else. Our friend ordered a baked potato and waited for sour cream that never came so he ended up eating a cold baked potato. Won't go back

Yelp
In Kansas City and want to experience the rich old cattle baron ambiance of a steakhouse? This restaurant has plenty of that! Meals are a la carte, based around a variety of steaks. The side dish menu is appealing, there is an extensive wine list and some decent whiskey options. The 17 oz boneless ribeye came cooked as requested, Pittsburgh Blue, and was okay, but nothing really special. The mushroom and pearl onion side dish would make a nice steak topping by was a bit much as a side. The 12 year old Glenlivet was just that. The best part of the meal was the chocolate crème brulee- deliciously decadent. Best over part of the meal was the service and interaction with our server, Will. For a tab of $110 before tip, I really hoped for a better meal. My tip to Will was not based on the meal, but on his service skills.

Yelp
Delicious meal this evening at The Golden Ox definitely a repeat first time there this evening. Anna waitress was fabulous with amazing service and recommendations. Will be back to try more of there amazing menu. Highly recommend if you are visiting or live here perfect for date night.

Yelp
My husband and I went here with our toddler for Valentine's Day! It was easy to make a reservation ahead of time over the phone and was followed up with a text reminder. The ambience was romantic and they had the cutest decorations for the holiday. We ordered the dry aged 48oz bone-in ribeye "The Drover" and shared it. It was one of the best streaks we've had in a long time. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! Our chosen sides were loaded baked potatoes and Brussels sprouts. "Blondie" for dessert was amazing. Side note: idk if it was just me but even their water was delicious lol It was our first experience and it was amazing. Excellent service! We'll definitely be coming back. 10/10

Yelp
Asked around to see where I could get a good KC strip and they mentioned this place more than enough times. The other places were a bit too formal looking, so this seemed like the right spot: a mixture of both casual yet definitely date night friendly. I learned that this place has existed for quite some time (it's located in an older, industrial section part of town). It was bought out and modernized some years back. Nice, clean restaurant that has an old-school steakhouse feel. I was told the service was better at the bar area, so headed that way. Host was right. Our server was awesome and friendly. Ordered the following: - Kansas City Strip - 8/10: bone in, huge 16 oz. Ordered it medium rare and it came out perfectly cooked. Very juicy and flavorful. A side note from the server: I asked what the difference was between a KC strip and NY strip and she says they're basically the same, although theirs came first :) she's right, though. It's the same cut of meat. - Wedge salad - 8/10: excellent refreshing starter. Crisp, large lettuce. Buttermilk dill had a little bit of egg in it, which I loved. - Garlic parsley fries - 6/10: fries had very little to no crunch. Not so good. - Tiramisu - 7.5/10 - Came in a glass. Nice, shareable dish. Not overly sweet. Rich mascarpone. Missing just a bit more espresso flavor though. Ambiance was really nice and service was excellent. Would come back for another try at their steaks.

Yelp
Hate to give a bad review but FML can't I have a legit good experience at a restaurant in KC? I mean is it too much to expect making a reservation at 8 and actually getting it by 8 or close to? Why come and say you'll be good to seat us in ten - 15 minutes and then 30 minutes later finally seat us. Then take almost 2 hrs to bring our food out? Then the kicker was it was F'n cold. Like WTF? Shit should have been sizzlin! Definitely a Womp Womp situation. I get being busy but the food taking 2 hours and cold was ridiculous. I tried to understand and be patient but damn. All I can say is SMH totally disappointed. I hope my children's mother was mistaken and we weren't being mocked on the way out by the owner with the Merry Christmas outburst but I truly don't get it. Why make a bad situation worse. People under rate a simple apology. It's hard to get this many people together and to have the night ruined is disheartening. I expect this ordering a steak at Waffle House but The Golden Ox? Come on. My suggestion would be just be honest with people. If from the beginning when we called for the reservation, we would've been told we're super busy tonight. We can't handle the party it would've sucked but we could've accepted that. Being told we were good and just trying to work it out probably wasn't the best decision. Wish the exchange of words wouldn't have happened with people in my party, but I really can't blame them after setting there that long and quietly dealing with your failures. All I can say is, I'm truly disappointed. All I wanted was a good night.

Joseph S.

Yelp
THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A FIVE-STAR REVIEW We love old-school steakhouses. After noticing that most poor reviews were from reservations at 7:45 PM or later, we decided to give the Golden Ox a try. We were warmly greeted, enjoyed excellent house specialty cocktails at the bar, and then seated at a cozy corner table for dinner. The KC Strip steaks were perfectly prepared and delicious. The sides, the Brussels spouts and the spinach with cheese sauce, were likewise delicious. Minus Half Star: The calamari was significantly over-breaded and over-cooked. We've enjoyed calamari around the world, from Santorini to Perth. We know calamari. Minus Half Star: The server's assistant spilled the cheese sauce on the table then did nothing about his mess. Minus Half Star: The staff stacks used dishes at the table and on trays. This leads to numerous dropped items, loud noises, and a diminished dining experience. We will not return.

Yelp
I really, really enjoyed the Golden Ox. It was one of those places that simultaneously takes you back in time but has enough updates (to the menu and atmosphere) that it feels fresh-enough. We had to get the KC Strip, because of obligations to history and place. But then we also tried the pork chops. I'll be honest, I'm not sure which was better. The KC stip was as good as we hoped it would be. It hit the spot: well cooked, well seasoned. But the pork chops are mind-blowing. Beer brined, check. Root beer cherry demi glace, check. Juicy, check. It was the highlight for me... But my spouse will root for the beef. Onion rings (delicious), mashed potatoes (very good), creamed spinach (very good) rounded out our dinner (and lunch the next day). We recently moved from Ft. Worth (cow town) to KC (cow town) and while the Ft. Worth stockyards are a sight to see and we'll preserved, KC knows it's steak!

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! First time in Kansas City, but this is a GREAT steakhouse!!! Ordered the Manhattan steak. Wedge salad and lobster Mac n cheese is legit!

Dawn B.

Yelp
The hostess was incredibly rude and made a incredibly rude comment about me as a female and she was a female herself. Not buried 2024. We asked to sit at a table because there was no one in the restaurant. There was two tables taken, and she told us that they were too busy that we could sit at the bar, refuse to spend any money at your establishment

Justin H.

Yelp
Fantastic Kansas City steakhouse. Absolutely enjoyed ourselves. Reminded me of a real Midwestern steakhouse and it sure pulls it off. The food was easily a nine out of 10. I find it a little dark in there, but that also kinda adds to the steakhouse field in my opinion. Fantastic bar great drinks and the service was outstanding. Loved the ambience of the old Midwestern feeling.
google avatar

Yelp
So I don't think I really had any expectations going into dinner @goldenoxkc But let me tell you, I loved it. The environment is cleaner with the original flare. The service was kind and attentive. My steak was cooked to a great uncooked Rare just the way I like. Getting a rare steak that is cooked right is hard in KC. The steaks had good salt and char. Really if I want a steak in KC right now I'm going to the OX. The tartare needed more salt, the calamari was over cooked and sitting in oil - so no it wasn't perfect but over all I left happy and excited that I we went. Also I can tell that the new chef is really trying to update and perfect the flavors.

Yelp
Spent NYE at Golden Ox, my first time dining there. Location is in the heart of the West Bottoms and vibe of the restaurant feels vintage. We had spectacular cocktails at the bar before meeting friends. Our group ordered oysters Rockefeller, calamari, and bone marrow to start with. The group all got steak and it was prepared perfectly and a variety of sides you can order al a carte. Fantastic meal all around. We will be back!

Yelp
Had our Christmas celebration dinner at Golden Ox this year. The place feels very retro and has photos of the history of the stockyard everywhere. We grabbed a drink at the bar. The drinks were good. We were then seated. Our service was great! Super friendly and timely. We each got a steak with a side. Steaks were good, not great, and unfortunately, I didn't feel like the quality matched the price. The French fries were delicious! The Brussels sprouts were a little too hard, like they were undercooked. Overall, if I want to drop that amount of money, I'd go elsewhere.

Yelp
In my 25+ years living in the Kansas City area, I have never been to the Golden Ox and I have been missing out! We were greeted by a friendly hostess who seated us in a small back room. Our waiter Craig came over with a smile and proceeded to give us some interesting history on not only the business, but the building, describing where the original bar used to be, the carpet that was saved after one of the fires, and the unique light fixtures. He recognized that we had brought a very nice bottle of red wine (they have a $20 corkage fee) and quickly came back with a decanter. He had a thorough knowledge of the menu and was very accommodating when we requested to share certain menu items. We ordered the escargot for starters which is traditionally prepared with garlic butter sauce. The bread basket had a nice assortment of breads and we split a delicious wedge salad. For our entrees, we had the Arrachera (marinated skirt steak), English pea risotto, and the special of the evening, butternut squash ravioli with goat cheese and pomegranate. The steak was tender and very flavorful, the risotto was a bit bland, and the pasta was nothing short of spectacular. It tasted like fall and was the favorite of the evening. If you decide to have dinner here save time to drop in next door at the Stockyards Brewery, which used to be the original bar for the Golden Ox. It feels like you're stepping back in time. Overall, our experience was very positive and we will return!

Yelp
The Golden Ox is a Kansas City icon. It reopened a few years ago and my husband and I had been wanting to try it ever since. To be honest I was a bit nervous given the 3.5 star rating of this place, but my hope that it was wrong drove us to give it a really solid try on my husband's birthday. First of all let me say the ambiance is 4.5 stars. When you walk in it's gorgeous, love the low light, leather booths, tiled floor, it just oozes old school KC steakhouse charm. The only negative is the high school gym pop out square ceiling but I'm probably the only person who gets that granular about decor! Secondly, the other great thing here is the service. Our server was honestly the best I've had in a long time - truly kind, honest feedback on the menu, didn't rush us, etc. 5/5. Now for the reason it's 3 and not 5 stars: the steak and the price. Now let me say, I'm happy to pay a premium for amazing steak. But when I'm paying $60 for a filet mignon along with no sides, I do expect it to be cooked better than what I can manage at home. I expect to be able to cut through it with ease and have the meat not only taste incredible but almost melt in my mouth. Unfortunately that was just not my experience. There were several bites that honestly were just so tough I couldn't eat them. The sauce served with the steak was great, the fries amazing, and the cocktails were about what I'd expect, but to not have an A+ steak when this is what you're advertising just kind of bummed me out. Especially since I'm rooting for the Golden Ox and WANT this place to be the steakhouse I take folks to when they are in town. It's so cool and has such an incredible history it deserves the quality of food the place needs. At any rate I will add that they asked if we wanted dessert and we were too full, but since it was my husband's birthday they treated us to a champagne toast which I thought was very classy and kind. Overall I do think it's worth a visit if you are KC native just to give it a solid try. I do want to return someday and I think we will, but I'll give it some time for them to hopefully work out some of the kinks in the menu.

Yelp
First time here. I ordered the Manhattan steak. About 1/2 thick steak. Over charred however it was cooked perfect medium rare. Problem was because the steak was so thin the char took over the flavor. Considering paying $56 and everything ala cart I was expecting more. I ordered bearnaise and green beans . The sauce was delicious and the green beans were tasty. The lobster Mac cheese was average. Couldn't find the lobster. Overall I would not come back here. Way over priced for average product

Yelp
Food is delicious and the service was great. The music and the atmosphere were all amazing. Great place to enjoy a date night or just meet with friends. I will say the lighting is low but since I was on a date with my husband it was perfect.

Yelp
I wasn't a regular at the Golden Ox back in the day when it was "the" steakhouse of Kansas City. After it closed and reopened in 2018 with new owners and a new look, I made a visit that left me very disappointed. This weekend I gave it a second try and was very impressed, as were my two guests who had dined at the original Golden Ox many times. You know you're going to have a great evening when you and your server immediately connect. We were exceptionally pleased by Sondra who has worked at the restaurant for 2.5 years. Her husband is also a chef there. She definitely knows the story of the menu. After ordering some cocktails, we started with Steak Tartare. It was unusual as it was served with chips, rather than small pieces of toast. It was a winner. We then ordered Wedge salads with its delicious ranch dressing. Very tasty. For our dinner we ordered The Drover, a 56-ounce Ribeye, Bone-in Midwest Angus that would have made Fred Flintstone happy. It arrived perfectly grilled, super tender and already sliced. Think of it as a Tomahawk. Baked Potatoes and Risotto were excellent sides. For the dessert, Sondra recommended the Cheesecake and it was superb. I'm usually someone who doesn't order Cheesecake, but I'm so glad we did. Everything about this evening caused me to erase the bad first experience. Give it a try. Ask for Sondra, she works most nights. Their booths are a tad small, so you might want to request a table. I hope you have a wonderful meal like we did.

Yelp
Well...I wanted to have a really good meal and experience. We were looking for a grown-up night out at a KC well-known, historic, steakhouse. Our reservation for 8 was ready so that was nice. Drinks were served for 6 out of 8 of us. My drink in particular kept getting missed, probably took 40 min or so from start to delivery. Food was overpriced 100%. My filet was $60 and about 6oz if lucky. It was dry and I asked for A1 and got some other thin steak sauce. Everything else is a la carte. All the sides are mediocre. Fries were lukewarm. It was so dark I couldn't see my food and my voice is hoarse from trying to talk. I used to wait tables so I am a reasonable reviewer. I'm glad we went to see for myself that I'm happy at many other steakhouses. The potential is there, but it is missing the mark!

Alexander S.

Yelp
To begin this, I wanna say my father had a reservation for 7:45. Upon getting there, we were told by the manager that the table would be ready in a few minutes, so we happily waited. 15 mins later, the manager swung by again to tell us that are table was almost ready. He came again in another 30 mins to tell us YET AGAIN that the table was almost ready, until finally we were sat. We ordered our food, and like any normal family we happily waited for it to be done. However, a hour and a half later, noticing other people that came after us not only get their food, but paying so they could leave, this obviously raised some red flags. We asked the waiter what was taking so long, and the manager came over and told us our food was almost done. 15 MINS LATER the food was still not there so we asked yet AGAIN and were told it was almost ready. Disappointingly, when the food came it was ALL very cold, so we unfortunately got up to leave. On the way out, the hostess made rude remarks to our family and the manager also got in an argument with my mom. The owner was also drunk and very unprofessional. I really liked this place although it's extremely overpriced, but I won't be going back. Hopefully everyone else experiences here are good, but the managers a bitch.

Yelp
The food is really good, seasoned well. I do think the lights are way too low in the restaurant to the point where I had to use my phone flashlight.. the drinks were solid and they had a nice variety. The service was fair nothing remarkable.

Yelp
The ambiance was outstanding - like an old-school NY steakhouse. The porterhouse was equally outstanding - perfectly cooked. As was the bartender Jack. Everything else . . . meh. The shrimp in the shrimp cocktail were weak: it came with 10 of them, quantity over quality. If a restaurant cannot source adequate shrimp for the eponymous cocktail . . . that's fine, then serve them in a shrimp chowder or étouffée, but don't include them in a cocktail. Tell your customers that the shrimp were not Golden-Ox-worthy and then recommend the crab cakes. The Ceasar salad was . . . I mean how do you screw up a Ceasar salad? I know, pre-make so it appears and tastes limp. If you must go: get the porterhouse, skip the appetizer, or the salad, and just go with a side.

Yelp
Went here for a Valentine's meal last month and I would say it's just average. For a place that should know how to do steak, my medium one came out more like medium well & then was also sliced (why do that?) so it was also a little cold. My partner's chicken was nothing to rave about. Probably the mushrooms were the best part of it. I really liked their creamed spinach but if that's the best item of the meal, that's rather unfortunate. The drink menu also didn't excite me, so just went with vino & beer. Needless to say, we did not stay for dinner & likely will not be back. The building and atmosphere is very cool tho so it might be worth checking out just for that reason

Yelp
We had reservations for 8:30 on a Friday night. We were seated fairly quickly and excited to get started with our meal. Everything seemed pretty promising. Firstly, the water was horrible. I'm not much of a water snob but at first sip, I thought I was drinking medicine. It wouldn't have been that big of a deal, but to add insult to injury, they had no bottled water options. We started out with the oysters, they were good. I was slightly disappointed at the selection though (only one type of oyster). Bread was brought to our table and it was alright. I definitely expected better. We placed our order (we decided to both get the Akaushi NY Strip with Brussel Sprouts and Lobster Mac as sides, the waiter recommended we have the steaks cooked medium). Our food took about an hour to come out. I understood on a Friday night they'd likely be busy; waits in general don't bother me, as long as the food is good. Once the food arrived, the waiter asked us to cut into our steaks; they looked fine (worth noting the restaurant is pretty dimly lit). We started to eat. The Lobster Mac tasted like it might have been great, but it was lukewarm. As I cut more into my steak, I realized it was pretty undercooked. I'm talking red and rare for a good portion of it. We had already waited so long for our food and the restaurant was about to close so I decided not to have them throw it back on the grill. My husband's steak was the perfect medium though and he did let me try it, it was very tasty. As we ate our Brussel Sprouts, we realized there was bacon in them. My husband and I abstain from eating pork, luckily out of preference and not for allergies or religious purposes, but we thought this was a HUGE faux pas to not have this indicated on the menu. If I order Roasted Brussel Sprouts, that's what I expect and I'm sure many others do, too. Overall this was a pretty underwhelming experience. It seems like it could have been great and maybe they were just having an off night, but even with that as a possibility, I'm not sure I can see myself coming back any time soon.

Yelp
An amazing experience. The ambience is very vintage KC and the service was great. Excellent food that came quickly and a nice wine and cocktail menu as well. Furthermore, it being next to Stockyards Brewery is a plus. If you're looking to show someone a classic KC steakhouse with a contemporary twist, this is the spot!

Yelp
Went Wed night. Place was rather empty at 5:30 but filled up with a good crowd around 7:00. We left at 8:30. Service was great, food was nicely prepared. Even with turnover in staff (our waiter was training multiple folks), was a great spot. ordered - 2 bone-in kc strips, 2 ribeye, 3 wedges, 1 Caesar, dozen oysters and stuffed mushrooms. Broccolini, creamed spinach, mashed and baker were our sides.

Yelp
Environment was great and service was okay! However, the steak was a little too charred and not the greatest flavor! A decent choice but not a top 5 in the metro.

Yelp
Took my Bf here for his birthday dinner. It can be as romantic or as casual as you make it, but it's def an "After 5" location. We made reservations & we're quickly seated. The waitress came immediately. Since it was our first time here, she went over the menu & gave great recommendations. We started with the Calamari. It was nicely breaded & fried without being overbearing. The lemon & dipping sauce were a perfect match. Boyfriend ordered the Kansas City Strip. He let the chef cook it "as recommended by the chef", and it came out medium. He was fine with it. It tasted amazing. Unfortunately I ordered the Filet medium, and it came out almost well done. By the time I got half way done, the remaining filet was well done ( steak would get 3 stars). The manager took it off the bill, which was appreciated. For them to be a known for their steak, I was disappointed that I couldn't enjoy all of it. Things happen so I'm open to trying them out again. The sides are kinda A La Cart as we wanted to share the broccoli & Mac & cheese. You have to order them in addition to steak for extra cost. But when we orders, they put broccoli on my plate, and the Mac & Cheese on my boyfriend's plate. So I had to slide some on to his place & vice versa. I was hoping it would be a separate side dish that we can share from. The best thing was the Espresso Martini. I'm used to more milk based espresso martinis but this was different in the best way. The Use of Brandy takes this drink to another level. You have the great flavor of the Cold Brew & Brandy. Highly recommend. 5 stars just for this drink.

Yelp
Phenomenal service, quality food with many options-low lighting/perfect ambiance. Good location

Yelp
In town for the draft, we wanted a great meal & couldn't have been happier with our decision to choose the Golden Ox. I had the prime rib & have to say it was one of the top 3 I've ever had. Could not recommend this place & especially the prime rib any more enthusiastically! Staff were fantastic as well. And the drinks were great.

Yelp
The atmosphere is awesome. Very vintage and relaxing. The service was really good. Our waitress was awesome. Even gave us a slice of cheesecake on the house since we are on our honeymoon. The food was good. I ordered the strip steak and I should have gotten the sauce. My wife ordered the baked cod which was outstanding.

Yelp
Tried beef tartare for the first time and it was amazing. Definitely recommend it. It's odd at first but if you like meat you won't regret it.

Yelp
I can't believe I'm a native to KC and this was my first time visiting the Golden OX. I was thoroughly impressed with the experience. You can definitely miss this restaurant if you're not looking for it. The entire time I thought this was a pub. I'm glad I decided to check it out! It does have an old swanky early 1900s feel to it with the dim lighting and older decor and style to the place. However, don't let the aesthetics fool you, the food is dang good!! We ordered the 16oz KC Strip and the Berkshire Pork Chop. Both meals were undeniably good!! We also added on a couple of sides: the Yukon potatoes and the parmesan creamed spinach. The potatoes were okay and we needed to add more salt and pepper but the spinach was AMAZING!!! I devoured the entire bowl. The pork chop was a double bone and super thick. It was very tender and juicy. I highly recommend this if you're trying this restaurant out. The menu is slightly pricey and the sides are al a carte so the meal can add up! This is a great spot for a date night or an evening just to treat yourself!

Yelp
Was in the mood for a lighter appetizer before the meal. Ordered the muscles to go along with the bread. When they came out they smelled pretty bad. My husband wasn't willing to try them. I was willing to give them a fair shot, tried two and they were both rancid. No one wants to be a pain and send something back, but they were inedible. I can't tell what happened. Did the kitchen team/server not smell or know they'd gone bad? (The smell was pretty strong) or did they know and just not care? Either way, given the price point, pretty disappointed.

Yelp
They have no clue how to cook a steak to temperature. I ordered medium rare and it was medium well. I couldn't eat it and they didn't offer to comp anything. Overpriced Regal Begal

Yelp
Portions were small but the food was delicious. I had the arrachera steak, highly recommended!

Yelp
Walked in with my partner on Saturday night. They made us stand around for 10 minutes even though there was a booth, and three tables were open the entire time we were there. We ordered a cocktail, escargot, porch and the American Royals. When we got the escargot, it was thrown on the table. Got our meals without steak knives, had our meals exchanged and wasn't asked for a second cocktail. Having that said, the food and drinks were amazing sadly we will not be returning due to the poor service.
